Self-driving cars aren’t fiction Early versions stick to basics, with ambitious systems coming

Once the stuff of science fiction and cartoons, automakers are racing to be first with vehicles that drive themselves. While the first systems won’t be that ambitious — don’t expect to work crossword puzzles while lounging “Jetsons”-style behind the wheel — they point to future cars that will make driving easier and actively avoid accidents. The latest to disclose plans is Ford Motor Co., which is developing a feature for heavy traffic jams that would let the car keep up with traffic and stay in its lane. For now, Ford will only say that “Traffic Jam Assist” will be available in the “mid term,” meaning at least five years away. Audi, which had a TTS sports car drive itself up Pikes Peak in 2010, says self-driving is no longer fantasy. “Our piloted-driving technology is shifting from a purely research

phase into actual pre-production planning,” spokesman Brad Stertz said. Automakers have demonstrated for years cars that can electronically talk to each other to avoid accidents, but the surge of interest in self-driving cars comes as Google has

been successfully showing off a self-driving Prius. A driver is still on board, but Google’s car can pretty much take care of itself. Most automakers are more down to earth in their self-driving initiatives, building on and

combining systems already in today’s cars, such as adaptive cruise control. Among them: » Cadillac. General Motors’ luxury division plans a feature called “Super Cruise” that would allow a vehicle to steer, brake and keep itself in a lane at highway speeds.

Cadillac spokesman David Caldwell said it could be ready by the end of the decade. » Audi. Volkswagen’s luxury unit is developing “Traffic Jam Assistant” that could take over driving at up to 37 miles per hour. It scans up to 820 feet ahead and monitors

surrounding vehicles to keep the car in the lane and accelerate or brake. » Mercedes. The German luxury brand showed “Advanced Driving Assist” in its F125 concept car last year, but has not confirmed plans for the features in production vehicles.

F

or the 2013 model year, the most important changes to the Mazda3 include greater availability of the company’s new Skyactiv powertrain as well as more standard comfort features. The Skyactiv system will be available on not only the sedan and hatchback models in the “iTouring” and “iGrand Touring” trim levels as it is now, but it will expand into the sport sedan. The 2012 “i Sport” currently has a 2liter, four-cylinder engine, but not Skyactiv, which boosts engine compression to squeeze more energy out of every drop of gas, and extend gas mileage. The

sport version is available as a sedan only. Other changes to the sport version make it more competitive with the segment, Mazda says. For 2013, it adds the multi-information display seen on the rest of the lineup and a USB port as standard equipment. The higher trim levels also receive a USB port standard. Air conditioning is now standard on all versions. A passive entry keyless system, push-button start and automatic climate control are now standard on the touring and grand touring trims, along with a blind-spot monitoring system. Mazda said the 2013 Mazda3 will go on sale later in 2012.

ales for major automakers improved more than 20 percent over a dismal June 2011 as the hardest-hit brands during last year’s Japan earthquake recorded huge yearover-year gains. Toyota gained 60.3 percent; Honda picked up 48.8 percent, and Nissan added 28.2 percent. Not that the Detroit Three stayed behind: Ford sales improved 7.0 percent in June, while GM and Chrysler both piled on double-digit gains of 15.5 percent and 20.3 percent, respectively. On strong gains for Jeep and Chrysler, Chrysler reported its best June since 2007.

Mitsubishi’s electric car sells for less than $30,000 By Ann M. Job Associated Press

At just under $30,000 base retail price, the 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV is the most affordable all-electric car in the U.S. market. The little five door with very little hood in the front also has an eye-popping, 126-miles-per-gallon-equivalent rating from the federal government in city driving.

That’s higher than the106mpg-e city rating of the 2012 Nissan Leaf electric car but less than the 132mpg-e of the upcoming Honda Fit EV. A bonus: The rearwheel drive i-MiEV has a plucky personality and speed-sensitive steering that, while electrically delivered, feels and responds more like a regular car’s steering than does that of some gasoline-

electric hybrid cars. The same compliment goes for the iMiEV’s electric brakes and their firm, realistic pedal feel. Still, i-MiEV drivers have to keep a close eye on mileage range, because like all solely electric cars, this little hatchback can’t go far on a full charge. Indeed the U.S. government estimates the i-MiEV range at 62 miles on a full charge.

N.Y. man nears 3 millionth mile in Volvo By Fay Abuelgasim Associated Press

BAY SHORE, N.Y. — It just keeps going, and going, and going. No, it’s not a battery. It’s Irvin Gordon’s 1966 Volvo P1800S. Gordon’s small, red two-door has more than 2.9 million miles on the odometer, the equivalent of nearly 1,176 times

across the globe. The retired schoolteacher from Long Island hopes to reach the 3 million mile mark by next year. He only has 34,000 miles to go. The 72-year-old Gordon drives his Volvo everywhere. He has held the Guinness World Records mark for High Mileage Vehicle since 2002 and

was the first person to hold that record. “It’s just a car I enjoy driving,” he said. He bought his beloved car on June 30, 1966, for $4,150 at the age of 25. “It was a whole year’s salary,” he said. Gordon originally wanted the convertible Volvo with air conditioning, but it was too expen-

sive. He paid extra to have an AM/FM radio, though. “It was $10 extra, and at that time, $10 was a lot. But an AM/FM radio was a big deal,” he said. Even his license plate says “MILNMILER.” His odometer doesn’t have enough digits to display the actual mileage, but Gordon has tune-up records verifying it.

or the 2013 model year, the just-released Chevrolet Sonic offers more available features on lower trim levels, and a new 7-inch touch-screen with Chevy’s MyLink multimedia system is now standard on highertrimmed models. The updated 2013 Sonic, above and below, will be on sale this summer. It’s available in sedan and hatchback body styles and in LS, LT or LTZ trims. All Sonic models get standard Bluetooth connectivity and steering-wheel-mounted controls for 2013. All models also get new integrated blind-spot mirrors. The LT trim now comes with Bluetooth audio streaming, a USB port and cruise control standard. The LT with an automatic transmission also gets remote start standard. The LTZ trim gets a standard rear spoiler. A premium six-speaker audio system is standard on LT and LTZ trims and optional on the LS trim. nder a new Chevrolet promotion, “Love It or Return It,” customers can return a vehicle that they’ve purchased and get a refund. The program applies to all new model-year 2012 and 2013 Chevy vehicles. They must be damage-free and returned after 30 days but before 60 days of the original purchase date. They must have been driven less than 4,000 miles. Fleet sales are not eligible, and if the vehicle has over $300 in damage, it no longer qualifies for return and refund. The program runs through Sept. 4.
