TOKYO — Toyota bounced back from safety recalls and natural disasters, selling 4.97 million vehicles globally in the first half of the year to retake its crown as the world’s top automaker from General Motors Co. The Japanese company sold about 300,000 more cars and trucks than GM did in the first half of the year, a lead large enough that it will be difficult for GM to catch Toyota in the final six months of 2012. GM sold 4.67 million vehicles during the first half. Both companies released their numbers Wednesday. For Toyota Motor Corp., the numbers underline a powerful rebound from a period of dismal sales, and the resilience of its brand as it gains traction in new markets such as China and Southeast Asia while clawing back lost U.S. market share. Both companies have said in the past that they don’t care about the global sales leadership and are focusing on making profits. But the crown is a matter of corporate pride for both automakers.

Toyota sold 4.97 million vehicles globally for the first six months of this year. The Japanese company makes the Prius. AP

GM doesn’t plan to drop out of the race, though. The company’s sales and market share grew in China, and Chevrolet, its largest brand, has seen record growth for seven straight quarters, spokesman Jim Cain said. GM sales should rise because 70 percent of its U.S. models will be refurbished or all-new in the next two years, said Cain. “We are in the early days of the most aggressive rollout of new products,” he said. Toyota’s production was hit by the earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan last year and then by flooding in Thailand, an important production base for the automaker. Before those disasters, its sales were dented by massive U.S.

safety recalls, totaling more than 14 million vehicles since the quality control problems emerged three years ago. But the company’s factories and sales recovered faster than expected, making it very hard for GM to catch Toyota between now and the end of the year, said Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of forecasting at the LMC Automotive consulting firm in Troy, Mich. Also, GM has a bigger presence than Toyota in Europe, where auto sales have fallen dramatically, and China, where the economy is starting to slow, Schuster said. Volkswagen AG was in third place in the sales race. The company said that it sold 4.45 million vehicles in the first half.

Ford to recall 485,000 small SUVs to fix throttles By Tom Krisher Associated Press

DETROIT — Ford is recalling nearly 485,000 Escape SUVs to fix sticking gas pedals that can cause crashes. The worldwide recall affects the 2001 through 2004 model years that are powered by 3-liter V-6 engines with cruise control. It comes just over a week

after U.S. safety regulators began investigating the small SUVs, which are called Mavericks in Europe. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received 68 complaints about the problem, including 13 crashes, nine injuries and one death. A teenage girl died when an Escape crashed in Arizona in

January. It’s the third recall in two weeks for the Escape, which was the top-selling SUV in the U.S. last month. A week ago Ford recalled 11,500 of the allnew 2013 models with 1.6liter engines because the fuel lines can crack and leak gasoline, causing fires. A few days before that, it recalled 10,000 2013 Escapes to fix carpet

padding that could interfere with braking. On the older Escapes, the cruise control cables can snag on the plastic cover atop the engine and cause the gas pedals to stick, Ford said. For the problem to happen, the pedals must be pushed to or near the floor, and the cruise control cables must have been bent or moved from their posi-

tion, Ford spokeswoman Marcey Zwiebel said. Cable positions can be changed when the SUVs are serviced, she said. “This is not a situation where the engine would accelerate or go into a wide-open state on its own,” she said. Dealers will replace the fasteners on the engine cover, raising it so there’s plenty of room for

the cruise control cable. In the meantime, Escape owners can take their vehicles to dealers, who will disconnect the cruise control and eliminate the risk of the problem happening, Zwiebel said. The recall affects 421,000 Escapes in the U.S. The rest are in Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia and some smaller markets.

The 2013 Nissan Versa sedan, which goes on sale in August, is available in three trims, 1.6 S, 1.6 SV and 1.6 SL. Fuel economy has improved on the Versa sedan with a continuously variable automatic transmission; it’s now rated at 31/40 mpg city/highway, an improvement of 1 mpg city and 2 mpg highway. The CVT is standard on SV and SL trims and is

available on the base S trim. CVTequipped models now come with a standard rear spoiler. For 2013, the S trim is available with a choice of three transmissions: a five-speed manual transmission, the CVT and a new four-speed automatic transmission, which gets 26/35 mpg. The Versa sedan can now be equipped with a backup camera on the SL trim with the Tech Package. SL-trimmed models come standard with a passive keyless-entry system, remote trunk release, sunvisor extensions and a driver’s armrest.

Seating seven in minivan style T

he Routan, Volkswagen’s version of the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans, has seating for seven in three rows. Redesigned for the 2011 model year, the Nissan Quest minivan also seats up to seven people in three rows.

VOLKSWAGEN

2012 Volkswagen Routan

Starting MSRP: $27,020 to $44,280

■ 3.6-liter V-6; six-speed automatic; available backseat TV; available MP3-ready hard drive. For 2012, the SEL trim level gains rain-sensing windshield wipers and push-button start, while the SEL Premium now includes a blind-spot warning system. ■ City: 17 mpg; Highway: 25 mpg

COMPARISON

New or notable Fuel economy

2012 Nissan Quest

Starting MSRP: $25,990 to $42,350 ■ All rear seats fold flat; 3.5-liter V-6 engine; cloth or leather upholstery; low step-in height. Four trim levels: S, SV, SL and LE. Satellite radio is now standard on SV and SL trims. ■ City: 19 mpg; Highway: 24 mpg

■ The Routan shares the same boxy shape as the Town & Country and Grand Caravan, but its face wears Volkswagen’s sloping grille and lower air dam. The headlights incorporate rounded sections for the outboard bezels. Exterior features include: optional power sliding doors; optional power liftgate; optional xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights; optional fog lights; optional roof rack.

Exterior

■ The Quest is distinguished by black pillars that combine with tinted rear and side windows to lend a floating-roof appearance. Prominent chrome grille strip, chrome door handles and a spoiler atop the squared-off rear end. Standard 16-inch steel wheels; available 18inch alloy rims; available power-sliding side doors; available moonroof, xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights and power liftgate.

■ The Routan’s dashboard carries two distinct layers separated by metallic trim. Unlike the Town & Country and Grand Caravan, whose dashboards received substantial upgrades last year, the Routan gained only a redesigned multifunction steering wheel. Interior features include: standard removable second-row captain’s chairs that fold onto themselves but not flat into the floor; standard three-seat third row drops flat into the floor; optional backseat entertainment system with two flip-down screens.

Interior

■ All five rear seats can be folded forward to form a flat cargo floor. Because the third row folds forward rather than back, there’s a deep well behind it that remains usable even when the seats are flat. In the SL and LE, the two third-row segments are springloaded to fold flat at the pull of a lever. Interior features include: standard cloth upholstery; available leather with heated front seats, memory feature for driver’s seat, backup camera, iPod hookup and Bluetooth connectivity, navigation system, Bose stereo and backseat entertainment system.

■ A driver’s knee airbag and side-impact airbags for the front seats joined the Routan’s standard side curtain airbags last year. Including the required dual front airbags, the Routan has a total of seven standard airbags. Safety features include: standard antilock brakes; standard electronic stability system.

Safety

■ Nissan has enhanced the standard tire pressure monitoring system with Easy Fill Tire Alert, which chirps the horn once the specified pressure is reached so you know to remove the air hose. Front seat-mounted side-impact airbags; front-seat active head restraints; side curtain airbags protect all three seat rows in the event of a side-impact collision or rollover; antilock brakes; electronic stability system; blind-spot warning system optional.

European losses hurt Ford’s 2Q profit By Dee-Ann Durbin Associated Press

DEARBORN,

Mich.

Plummeting sales in Europe — and no hope for a quick fix in the troubled region — hurt Ford’s second-quarter profit and forced the company to lower its full-year earnings forecast. Ford joined a string of

other multinational companies — including UPS and Xerox Corp. — in cutting its profit forecast for the full year because of weakness in the region. The company expects to lose more than $1 billion in Europe in 2012, double its estimate from the beginning of the year. The results underscore the importance of Europe

to Ford, where it faces an economy in crisis. Ford relies on the region for about 25 percent of its sales and revenues. Sales have fallen to 20-year lows as buyers shy away from big purchases. “This is a very serious situation,” said Ford Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks. “It’s going to take quite a long time for

Europe to work through these issues.” The automaker still expects a strong overall operating profit in 2012, but it will be lower than the $8.7 billion in 2011. Previously, Ford had expected to make about the same amount as 2011. Ford earned $1 billion, or 26 cents a share, in the quarter, down 57 percent

from $2.4 billion, or 59 cents, a year earlier. Without one-time items, including the sale of two parts factories, it earned 30 cents. That beat Wall Street’s forecast of 28 cents. Quarterly revenue fell 6 percent to $33.3 billion. Ford posted a $2 billion profit in North America in the second quarter thanks

to higher pricing and highly anticipated new vehicles like the Ford Escape. That was up 5.3 percent from a year earlier. But losses elsewhere swamped North American gains. Ford lost $404 million in Europe, down from a profit of $176 million last year. Sales of cars and trucks in the region fell 15 percent.

or the 2013 model year, the Audi A8 gets a series of new engines and trims, bringing down the model’s overall starting price. The 2013 A8 now has four engine choices instead of two. The new A8 can be equipped with a carryover 500-horsepower, 6.3-liter W12 or two new engine offerings: a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 (replacing last year’s 4.2-liter V-8) or a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6. A new Audi S8 model is equipped with a 520-hp, twin-turbocharged 4.0liter V-8. All the models are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and

Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The V-6 A8 will be available in regular and long-wheelbase body styles, and it is EPA-rated at 18/28 mpg city/highway. The V-6 model comes standard with a navigation system, rain-sensing wipers, real leather and wood cabin accruements and an adaptive suspension for $73,095 (including an $895 destination charge). This is a significant decrease in the starting price of the A8 compared with the previous model, which wasn’t available with a V-6. The V-6 and W12 A8s are available now, and the V-8 model is coming this summer. The S8 will go on sale this fall.
