Toyota says electric RAV4 will set pace for mileage By Alan Ohnsman Bloomberg News

LOS ANGELES — Toyota

Motor Corp., the biggest maker of hybrid autos, said its RAV4 EV sportutility vehicle powered by batteries and motor from Tesla Motors Inc. will go farther on a charge than major competitors’ electric models. The small SUV, arriv-

ing at California dealers in about a month, goes as far as 113 miles per full charge, Toyota said at a briefing last week in Newport Beach, Calif. The $49,800 model is the market’s only all-electric crossover and qualifies for $10,000 in combined federal and state incentives, the company said. “The RAV4 EV’s driving performance, dynam-

ics and cargo capacity are equal to or exceed the gaspowered RAV4 V-6,” said Bill Fay, group vice president of U.S. Toyota-brand sales. “It’s the most practical, versatile and convenient electric vehicle on the market.” The battery-powered SUV joins a growing field of rechargeable models that includes Nissan Motor Co.’s Leaf hatchback,

General Motor Co.’s plugin Volt sedan, Honda Motor Co.’s Fit EV subcompact and Ford Motor Co.’s five-door Focus EV. Automakers are adding them to meet demand from some buyers for vehicles that emit little or no pollution and to comply with California rules requiring them from the largest brands.

Charging modes The RAV4 EV takes about six hours to fully recharge, using a 240-volt outlet, and has two charging modes for its 41.8-kilowatt battery. With a “standard” charge, the model goes 92 miles; an “extended” charge option is available for longer trips, boosting range to as far as 113 miles of real-world

driving, the company said. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Leaf averages 73 miles per charge, the Focus EV goes about 76 miles and the Fit EV gets about 82 miles. The Volt averages 38 miles on battery power before a gasoline engine engages to propel the car.

he average fuel efficiency of new cars hit an all-time high in the first half of this year, according to new research released by a Michigan auto-industry research firm. The average rate was 23.8 miles per gallon, up 1.1 mpg over the same period in 2011, said Alan Baum, principal of Baum & Associates. He attributed the improvement to the increasing number of fuel-efficient cars in all segments, consumer purchase of fuel-efficient larger vehicles, and the fact that the current

model year marks the start of the U.S. government requiring automakers to increase their label ratings by 2016. Luke Tonachel, vehicles analyst at the Natural Resources Defense Council, said the fuel-efficiency standards are “exceeding our expectations. These standards are doing exactly what they should.” Currently, there are 60 nameplates with high fuel economy in the small and midsize cars and crossovers segments, as opposed to 28 in 2009, according to Baum.

GM has second weak quarter since its bankruptcy By Tom Krisher Associated Press

DETROIT — The engine that powers General Motors is running rough. And if the company doesn’t tune it up soon, GM’s comeback from bankruptcy is in danger of stalling. The Detroit automaker said Thursday that its second-quarter net profit fell 41 percent on a big loss in Europe. And there are signs that North America, GM’s main income source, also is slowing. Profits there have fallen for two straight quarters, the first time that’s happened since the company left bankruptcy in

2009. The results are another sign that the U.S. auto industry, a bright spot in the economy for two years, is heading for a

rough patch. The numbers: GM’s profit from April through June dropped to $1.5 billion, $1 billion less than the same quarter a year

earlier. It had a $361 million pretax loss in Europe and $19 million of red ink in South America. In North America, pretax profits fell nearly 13 percent to about $2 billion. International profits, including Asia, also dropped, by 3 percent to $557 million. The company is predicting lower third-quarter profits in North America as it incurs manufacturing and advertising costs for new models. Also troubling was GM’s market share. It fell in all four of the company’s regions, including nearly a two-point drop in the U.S. to 18.2 percent. CEO Dan Akerson told analysts that GM’s per-

formance was worse than last year in most key areas. “That’s not acceptable with this leadership team, and we’re going to underscore that fact with our teams to keep everyone on point,” he said. The company’s shares dropped 52 cents, or 2.6 percent, to close at $19.14. Other automakers: GM isn’t the only automaker with European troubles or slowing growth in North America. Last week, Ford reported that its second-quarter net income fell 57 percent, largely because of a loss in Europe. And Chrysler’s U.S. sales growth has started waning. Sales were up 13 per-

cent in July over last year, but they grew more than 30 percent during the first six months. “North American growth is going to slow a bit and will hit the auto manufacturers,” said Bill Selesky, an auto industry analyst with Argus Research, who predicts a rebound early next year. Chief Financial Officer Dan Ammann attributed the second-quarter drop in North American profits to a $200 million cut in pension investment income. GM recently switched the liability for its salaried worker pensions to an insurance company, costing the pension fund $29 billion.

Toyota raises sales target on 2Q profits By Yuri Kageyama Associated Press

TOKYO — Toyota raised its sales target for this year to a record 9.76 million vehicles and reported a strong recovery in quarterly profit Friday, underlining its bounce back from a disaster-plagued 2011. Toyota Motor Corp. said April-June profit zoomed to $3.7 billion from $14.1million the year before. Its new sales target would represent a 23 percent increase from the 7.95 million vehicles sold in 2011, and is180,000 vehicles more than Toyota’s last forecast in February. The carmaker’s quarterly sales soared nearly 60 percent to $70.5 billion, rebounding from a sales crash that all Japanese automakers suffered after the earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan in March last year.

US market share grows Toyota said quarterly vehicle sales nearly doubled from the year before to 2.3 million vehicles as sales rose in regions including North America, Europe, Japan and the rest of Asia. The regaining of U.S. market share is crucial for Toyota as that is where it makes the bulk of its profits. Toyota, which makes the Camry sedan, Lexus luxury model and Prius hybrid, has had hard times in the past several years, including recalls of more than 14 million vehicles that began three years ago and faltering global demand from the financial crisis.

Sales ambitions But Toyota has been recovering. For the first half of this year, it regained its spot as the world’s top automaker in global vehi-

Toyota’s past sales record was achieved in 2007, at 9.36 million vehicles.

The currency effect The company said it carried out cost cuts totaling $897 million for the latest quarter, offsetting the negative effect of a

strong yen. A strong currency hurts Japanese exporters by eroding the value of overseas earnings. Senior Managing Officer Takahiko Ijichi said the company left its fullyear earnings forecasts unchanged because of the weakening euro and other risks.

For the full fiscal year through March 2013, it expects $9.7 billion in profit, up 168 percent from the previous year, on $282 billion sales, up 18 percent. Adding to its upbeat prospects is Toyota’s popularity in relatively new markets such as Indonesia, India and China.

Diesel to be around for years Power, efficiency make it preferable to other power sources for moving products across America

USNewswire

WASHINGTON — Clean diesel engines will continue to be the dominant power source for heavyduty vehicles in the United States for “decades to come because of their power and efficiency,” according to a newly released study prepared for the U.S. Department of Energy. The report — “Advancing Technology for America’s Transportation Future” — was authored by the National Petroleum Council at the request of the Energy Secretary Stephen Chu. The two-year study examines fuels, technologies, industry practices and government policies through 2030 for auto, truck, air, rail and waterborne transport and potential industry and government actions that could reduce Greenhouse gas emissions from American transportation by 50 percent by 2050. “The National Petroleum Council findings confirm what transportation officials and industry leaders have already determined — that the continued advancements in clean diesel technology will continue to make diesel the dominant power source for heavy-duty trucks throughout the United States for decades to come,” said Allen Schaeffer, the Executive Director of the Diesel Technology Forum. The NPC report states: “Diesel engines will remain the powertrain of choice for HD vehicles for decades to come because of their power and efficiency. There are, however, opportunities to improve the technology. Significant fuel economy improvements in diesel powered trucks are possi-

“Government policies should be technology neutral while market dynamics drive commercialization.” ALLEN SCHAEFFER, Executive Director of the Diesel Technology Forum

The Diesel Technology Forum is a non-profit national organization dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of diesel engines, fuel and technology. Forum members are leaders in clean diesel technology and represent the three key elements of the modern clean-diesel system: advanced engines, vehicles and equipment, cleaner diesel fuel and emissionscontrol systems. ble. Indeed, the fuel economy (mpg) for new Class 7&8 HD vehicles, which consume more than 70 percent of the fuel in the trucking fleet, could be doubled.” As The New York Times reported: “(A)t a briefing by the council, one member, William Reinert, the national manager in charge of the advanced technology group for Toyota’s American sales unit, put it bluntly. ‘Internal combustion engines are likely to be the dominant propulsion system for decades to come,’ he said.”

Diesel power “Today, diesel powers more than 80 percent of freight movement in the U.S. and internationally more than 90 percent of

global trade is moved by diesel engines,” Schaeffer said. “There is a reason today that diesel powers the overwhelming majority of the nation’s commercial trucking, school and transit bus fleets,” Schaeffer said. “Diesel’s unmatched combination of availability, safety, energy-efficiency and economical operation and performance has made it the technology of choice, but it is also the environmental performance and prospects for even greater energy efficiency that make it the technology of choice for the future. “The advances in diesel technology have improved efficiency and significantly reduced emission to the point that diesel engines are now near

zero emissions. The NPC report also highlights that diesel technology will continue to advance in the coming years. These are all reasons why the National Petroleum Council and transportation officials’ project diesel will be the primary power behind freight transportation for many decades to come. Diesel’s role as a technology to increasingly power light-duty vehicles in the future was also recognized in the report.“

Alternative fuel? The NPC report examined several alternative fuel sources including natural gas, which NPC said could make inroads into heavy-duty trucking “assuming that the current price spread between diesel and natural

gas persists over time.” The report also highlighted the major infrastructure problems natural gas and other alternative fuel sources face. “Deployment of a new fuel infrastructure is a significant hurdle to the adoption of new fuel-vehicle systems. It could cost tens to hundreds of billions of dollars to provide similar alternative fuel availability as the current gasoline infrastructure and will take decades to fully deploy,” the report said. “Some fuels also require advances in supplychain infrastructure technology to aid deployment. Specifically, advanced biofuels must overcome technology hurdles related to fuel manufacturing, and hydrogen must overcome technology hurdles related to dispensing in-

frastructure.” The NPC study also coincides with a recent survey of industrial freight carriers which found less than 10 percent of senior executives currently “believe LNG will be widely adopted of over-the-road trucking.”

Technology neutral “The NPC report also recommended against having the government attempt to pick winners and loser in transportation,” Schaeffer said. The report stated: “There is a great deal of uncertainty regarding which individual fuel-vehicle systems will overcome technology hurdles to become economically and environmentally attractive by 2050. “Therefore, government policies should be technology neutral while market dynamics drive commercialization.” Said Schaeffer, “The NPC recommendation urging technology neutrality is one the Administration should heed, particularly given past experience favoring certain energy sources and technologies.”

Justice gets help in autos fraud

Private companies partner with federal government to help thwart vehicle theft and to reduce unsafe cars on highways

USNewswire

WASHINGTON — The Office of Justice Programs’ Bureau of Justice Assistance announced new partnerships formed to fight consumer fraud and reduce the number of unsafe or stolen vehicles being retitled or sold.

Data provider companies, Tallahassee-based Auto Data Direct, Inc., Carco Group, Inc., CARFAX, CVR, Experian Automotive, Mobiletrac, LLC., Motor Vehicle Software Corporation, RigDig, VINAudit.com, LLC., and VINSmart, have joined BJA’s effort to pro-

tect consumers by providing consumer access to the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS). NMVTIS is the only vehicle history database in the nation to which all states, insurance carriers, and junk and salvage yards are required by fed-

eral law to report. NMVTIS helps states and law enforcement deter and prevent vehicle-related crimes. Along with consumers seeking vehicle history information, system users include law enforcement agencies and state motor vehicle titling

agencies. The NMVTIS Law Enforcement Access Tool improves the ability of law enforcement to identify vehicle theft rings and combat other criminal enterprises involving vehicles. Beginning this month, all auto dealers in the

State of California are required by California Assembly Bill 1215 to obtain a NMVTIS report prior to selling a used vehicle to a consumer. This state legislation is an excellent example of state efforts to use NMVTIS data to provide enhanced consumer protection.

The Prius lives up to its promise of high gas mileage in real-world driving.

Expanding Prius family offers variety, enviable fuel efficiency By JENNIFER GEIGER

KICKINGTIRES.NET

I

f you think you see the Toyota Prius everywhere, that’s because it is. Sales of Toyota’s most popular hybrid are continually strong, undoubtedly propelled by the lure of high fuel economy. Toyota has even expanded the family with the Mini-Me Prius c and puffed-up Prius v. Is the traditional Prius still on top? We took it on a road trip, and in terms of fuel economy, the answer is a resounding yes. The 2012 Toyota Prius is EPA-rated at 51/48/50 mpg city/highway/combined. The EPA lists “unofficial mpg estimates from vehicle owners” that are a smidge higher, with an average rating of 51.6 mpg. How did this overachiever perform for me? It surpassed all of the above. During a 324-mile trip, I drove normally and averaged 53.6

mpg. I spent about 75 percent of those miles at highway speeds, and the air conditioning was on during the entire trip. The hatchback was also loaded with two adults, one child and lots of weekend gear. The Prius features several driverselectable operating modes, and I spent most of the time in Eco mode, which alters throttle response and limits air-conditioning power to save energy. Part of the appeal of the Prius family is choice. The tiny Prius c offers better city gas mileage (53/46/50 mpg) in a much smaller package, and the larger Prius v offers more space without sacrificing too many precious mpgs (44/40/42 mpg). Up next is the Prius Plug-in, which offers a promising 95 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent). But for now, the plain-old Prius is still hard to beat when it comes to gas mileage.
