Dealerships spruce up: Cappuccino while you wait? By Tom Krisher The Associated Press

DETROIT — Spending a Saturday afternoon at the typical car dealership is not exactly pampering yourself. Drab floors, battered furniture, weak coffee in a paper cup. And that’s before the salesman abandons you for half an hour to “check with my manager. But Detroit automakers are finally stable after their brush with death, and most dealers can afford to spend a little money to spruce up the showroom. So they’re adding leath-

er chairs, rich oak walls, theatrical lighting — even hair salons. The improvements can cost from $200,000 to $15 million. But dealers say it’s worth it because people expect a more memorable, luxurious experience these days as they make one of the biggest purchases of their lives. “If we don’t meet that expectation, we will not compete, says Richard Bazzy, who plans to spend more than $1 million each to renovate his two Ford dealerships in the Pittsburgh suburbs, including

brushed-aluminum exteriors and mahogany and maple furniture. Whether it helps sales is up for debate in the industry. Nicer surroundings may draw people in, but they also raise costs and let dealers with shabbier buildings sell for less. Bazzy says he’ll pay for the upgrades without help from Ford, but sometimes automakers will kick in. Some dealers have spent millions on their own, while others were forced to by automakers.

General Motors, Ford and Chrysler have been trying for years to get dealers to spiff up, but they’re pushing harder now. Honda and Toyota have similar programs. There are specifications for uniform signs, paint colors and furniture as automakers try to make dealers look alike and create a unified image for their brands. Dealerships that sell luxury cars have been one-upping each other for years, but the contest is moving into everyday brands. Some dealers say it’s getting out of hand and the customer will wind up absorbing the additional cost. After all, who really needs a putting green when they’re sizing up a new ride? “There’s a point here where I think it’s excessive,” says Gary Dilts, a former Chrysler sales chief who now runs a consulting business. “How much cappuccino are you willing to pay for?” Detroit automakers can afford to turn their attention to modernizing dealerships because the existential crisis of 2009, when GM and Chrysler went bankrupt, is behind them. All three Detroit automakers are profitable again for the first time in nearly seven years. The dealerships could use the attention. Many have buildings that date to Detroit’s boom years in the 1950s and ’60s — and it shows. Competitors came along in the ’70s, the time of the Arab oil embargo and long lines for gasoline, when Americans began shifting to more fuel-efficient foreign cars. Toyota and Honda dealers blossomed with shiny buildings, especially in the suburbs. In the ’80s and ’90s, Detroit’s market share sank further, and it ended up with too many dealerships in more rundown neighborhoods, all fighting over fewer sales. Cheap desks and fake plants had to do. Detroit tried to get its dealerships, which operate as independent franchises, to spruce up in the 1990s and 2000s. Some did; others wouldn’t or couldn’t afford to. Then came the financial crisis of 2008. M a ny de a lers who m ade

There are even hair salons, restaurants and putting greens. it through were targeted by Detroit companies for closure. GM and Chrysler cut dealers during their 2009 bankruptcies while Ford was easing dealers out, all with the idea of selling more cars with less competition. All told, the Detroit carmakers shed more than a quarter of their dealers between 2008 and the start of this year, when they had about 10,000, according to the trade publication Automotive News. Since the survivors are selling more cars, the companies want them to invest. The average U.S. dealership has been in the same place for almost 28 years, and nearly half the buildings haven’t been renovated in more than five years, the National Automobile Dealers Association found in a survey. While automakers are pressing mainstream-brand dealers to spruce up, the pressure is even more intense on luxury dealers, especially Cadillac and Lincoln. Many of those dealerships are worn out compared with Lexus and BMW. GM is pushing Cadillac dealers to separate showrooms and service entrances from other GM brands, and it expects wood-

en walls, leather furniture, and fancy tile and carpet. Ford’s struggling Lincoln brand has a similar program, prodding dealers to spend at least $1 million each.

At Suburban Cadillac-Chevrolet near Ann Arbor, Mich., the first dealership renovated under a new GM program, both sides of the 41-year-old building were upgraded this year. The luxury

side got the best amenities, but Chevy got attention, too. There’s a cappuccino machine in the Cadillac waiting area and coffee on the Chevy side. The Chevy walls are a freshly painted bright yellow, while they’re English oak on the luxury side. Cadillac salesmen have separate office space; Chevy salesmen share new cubicles. Renovation of the once-dingy building cost around $4 million, and Mike Mosser, the general manager, said it’s now nicer than the Lexus store down the street. Even with the upgrade, Mosser would have a hard time outclassing Performance Lexus, a dealer in Cincinnati’s upscale suburbs. It has a fitness center, a white grand piano and a lounge with a home theater. It’s worth $9 million, according to tax records. Although automakers often say they aren’t requiring the upgrades, they can take steps such as withholding hot-selling models to force improvements, said Dilts, the ex-Chrysler sales chief. The dealers association worries that dealerships could start struggling again if they have to borrow too much money for a makeover. But for others, upgrades are good business. Ryan LaFontaine, whose family-owned group spent $15 million two years ago to build a sparkling CadillacBuick-GMC dealer with a hair salon and restaurant, said he covers the costs by selling more cars than other dealers north of Detroit. He ranked second in the nation last year in Buick and GMC sales. “We’re getting customers into our building that maybe we wouldn’t have gotten an opportunity to talk to or wow,” he says. The race for fancy buildings has spawned a backlash from dealers who advertise lower prices because they don’t spring for frills. Bob Shuman, co-owner of a Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram dealer near Detroit, says he rebuilt his showroom in 2008 on land his family owned. He brews the coffee and mows the lawn himself. There’s a soft drink machine, but no restaurant or theater. “I don’t get it,” Shuman says. “I don’t understand why customers don’t ask themselves ‘Who’s paying for all of this?’”

Mazda sees growth with lean gas engines, not EVs By Yuri Kageyama The Associated Press

TOKYO — Mazda’s president believes gasoline engines will still power 80 to 90 percent of the world’s autos even in 20 years time, and remains confident the carmaker can grow without electric vehicles. The comments Thursday from Mazda Motor Corp. President Takashi Yamanouchi contrast with the strategy at Japanese rival Nissan Motor Co., which is banking heavily on its Leaf electric car, one of the first mass-produced EVs on the market. Yamanouchi said Mazda’s efficient gas engine called “Skyactiv” will be a pillar of its growth strategy as the Hiroshima-based manufacturer seeks to boost sales in emerging markets, where electric vehicles and hybrids aren’t expected to be as popular as in developed nations. “Skyactiv will be one of the drivers of our growth,” Yamanouchi told reporters at a Tokyo hotel, where Mazda showed a new subcompact. Mazda currently has no hybrid vehicle in its lineup. It plans to start selling a hybrid by 2013. Hybrids still require gas engines, and Yamanouchi said they can be counted as part of what will be the 80 or 90 percent of cars that aren’t electric. Nissan has sold about 8,000 of its Leaf electric vehicles around the world, more than half in Japan, since its gradual global rollout started in December. That’s a tiny fraction of the world auto market. But Yokohama-based Nissan is targeting production of 250,000 electric vehicles a year globally by 2015, stressing that concerns about global warming and pollution are growing. Mazda began selling the Demio, known as Mazda2 overseas, in Japan on Thursday, offering a version packed with Skyactiv technology. It is targeting 6,000 overall Demio sales a month. The automaker said it was not planning to sell the Skyac-

ing to Mazda. Other features, such as “idling stop,” in which the engine turns off automatically while at a traffic light and other temporary stops, helps boost mileage.

Mazda is building engine and vehicle assembly plants in Mexico for small cars, such as Mazda2 and Mazda3, for markets in Central America and South America.

It has said it will stop building the midsize Mazda6 sedan at its 50-50 joint venture with Ford Motor Co. in Flat Rock, Michigan, but did not specify exactly when that would be,

leaving the fate of the plant unclear. Mazda’s output there has been at about 40,000 vehicles a year. Mazda, which has lost money for the last three fiscal years, is struggling to assert its brand without counting on its longtime partnership with Ford. No replacement partnership has been announced, and Mazda has repeatedly said Ford remains a key partner. Dearborn-based Ford bought 25 percent of the Japanese carmaker in 1979, raising it to 33.4 percent in 1996. But Ford began cutting ties in 2008, and last year lowered its ownership to 3.5 percent. Like other Japanese automakers, Mazda has been hurt by supplier disruptions from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan. It is also hurt more than others by the surging yen because it sells vehicles made at overseas plants in Japan. Yamanouchi reiterated the company’s target for annual global sales of 1.7 million vehicles by the fiscal year ending March 2016. Mazda sold 1.1 million vehicles for the fiscal year ended March 2011. — Yuri Kageyama can be reached at http://twitter.com/ yurikageyama

Clock spring brings power to steering wheel By Brad Bergholdt McClatchy-Tribune News Service

Question: I just had my car into the shop because the SRS light came on. They told me the reason was a bad “clock spring” in my steering wheel. I had the repair done and the light turned off but I feel a little uneasy about what this was. Is there really such a part? Could they have just reset the light and not really fixed anything? — Polly F. Answer: It’s too bad the repair shop representative didn’t spend an extra few minutes explaining the details of your repair. There is such a thing as a clock spring; it’s an electrical connection device that brings electrical power into your steering wheel. In the days before airbags a

under the hood single sliding metal contact behind the steering wheel made the connection between the steering column and wheel for the horn. Aside from an occasional squeak, this worked acceptably, but was deemed not reliable enough for the air bag electrical connection. A clock spring, also called a cable reel, wraps a multiple conductor ribbon cable into a plastic housing, similar to a tape measure. One end of the cable connects to the stationary steering column and the other end plugs into the steering wheel. The wheel can rotate about 2-3 turns in each direction from

center as the clock spring winds back and forth. The additional conductors in the cable reel can be used for steering wheel controls (buttons) for cruise control, audio system, and other features. Clock springs occasionally get into trouble, as does any component with moving parts, and this is the most common reason for an illuminated SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) light. Binding seems to be the culprit, which damages the ribbon cable or cable connections. Replacement of the clock spring is pretty straightforward once the steering wheel is removed. One must be careful however, to center the clock spring, matching the car’s straight ahead wheels upon assembly, or it

It is possible to simply clear the SRS light and erase stored diagnostic trouble codes, but if this was all that was done, the light would come right back on as the system loop checks each of its circuits. From your descrip-

tion it sounds like the fault was accurately diagnosed and repaired. It’s unfortunate you weren’t shown the faulty part along with a short explanation of why replacement was needed. Q: What’s the best pressure for my tires? I was told not to inflate them to the pressure listed on the

tire because it’s too high. Wouldn’t this give me the best gas mileage? — Harry Warner A: Higher tire pressure does reduce rolling resistance, but tire pressure also needs to be balanced with the vehicle’s specific needs to provide optimum handling, avoid skidding, and prevent unusual tire wear. On the driver’s door or pillar you should find a sticker listing the recommended pressure. Go with these numbers rather than the maximum pressure listed on the tire. Pressure specs are for cold (predriven) tires. — Brad Bergholdt is an automotive technology instructor at Evergreen Valley College in San Jose, Calif. Dream Cruise could serve as Cuban-American exchange By Mark Phelan Detroit Free Press

Could classic American cars bridge the distance between Detroit and Havana and help build relationships between Americans and Cubans? An advocate of “peopleto-people diplomacy” would like to do just that by hosting a Cuban contingent in the Woodward Dream Cruise. The idea is to showcase the innovation of Detroit’s latest models in Havana while honoring Cubans’ ingenuity in keeping decades-old Detroit iron running. Countless roadblocks stand in its way, but Rick Shnitzler’s idea should appeal to history buffs and car lovers. Shnitzler and Detroit native John Dowlin founded Taillight Diplomacy, a nongovernment group that’s built links between Cuban and American car culture for 13 years.

An advocate of “people-to-people diplomacy” would like to do just that by hosting a Cuban contingent in the Woodward Dream Cruise. The idea is to showcase the innovation of Detroit’s latest models in Havana while honoring Cubans’ ingenuity in keeping decades-old Detroit iron running. Wa lk i ng the st reets of Cuba is like stepping back in time, says Detroit journalist John McElroy. American cars from the 1920s, ’30s, ’40s and ’50s are still everyday transportation. McElroy is producing a report on Cuba’s old cars and their owners’ inventiveness. “Stuck in Time: American Classics in Cuba” is scheduled to air July 24 on “AutoLine Detroit,” the program

McElroy hosts on public TV stations around the country. Cuba was the richest country in the Caribbean for decades. Cubans bought up to 100,000 new cars a year, most of them from neighboring America. That ended with the revolution and the U.S. trade embargo, now in its sixth decade. The rest of the world pretty much ignores the embar-

go, but very few Cubans can afford a new vehicle. They keep the old American cars — some of which have been in a single family for generations — running with baling wire and inspiration. “I’ve seen a Studebaker with a diesel engine from a Russian tractor,” McElroy said. “I’ve also seen the most painstaking, loving restorations you can imagine. I saw people laying out brochures and old magazine ads on the floor to figure out the shape of the fender for a 1928 Chevy.” O ne memb er of t he Havana Car Club soaked wood from a local tree in water for two years until it became pliable enough to shape into a steering wheel. Others make their own brake fluid by mixing mineral oil with sap from an indigenous fig bush, he said. Cuba could also provide the Dream Cruise with his-

toric gems like Che Guevara’s green 1960 Chevrolet Bel Air. The revolutionary icon was famous for using a motorbike but he learned to drive in a Willys Jeep. He drove a broken-down Studebaker until the government decided he needed something more reliable and drafted the Chevy. Working with Cuban authorities and the Walter P. Chrysler Museum, Shnitzler’s group recently authenticated Ernest Hemingway’s rare 1955 Chrysler New Yorker Deluxe convertible. The car is now at the Finca, the farmhouse where Hemingway lived and wrote just outside Havana. So far, Taillight Diplomacy has shared expertise on vehicle repair and restoration with Cubans. Shnitzler would like to expand that to a cultural exchange of people and machines. “The Woodward Dream

Cruise is way up there among global automotive events,” said Shnitzler, a Philadelphia resident and city planning consultant who ran a vintage car business for years. “It’s a broad-based people’s event. It would be the perfect place to show Cuban cars, and modern American cars would be a huge attraction in Cuba.” His dream is to bring some Cuban cars to the Dream Cruise and have a reciprocal event that draws American car buffs and shows off new Detroit 3 vehicles in a parade along the Malecon, Havana’s famous seaside avenue. “If you brought a 2011 Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger or Chevy Camaro to Cuba, Havana would come to a standstill,” McElroy said. “People would pour out of the woodwork to see modern American icons on the street.”

3 projects to boost the value of your garage By Bree Fowler The Associated Press

NEW YORK — For a lot of homeowners, their garage has become their go-to place for stashing everything but their actual cars. But for those looking to sell their home in today’s tough real estate market, or who are just looking to get the most out of the space, a garage facelift may be the way to go. Here are three steps you can take to improve your garage:

1. Clean it up

There’s no dispute among realtors and design experts: The worst condition a garage can be in, especially when you’re trying to sell, is messy and disorganized. “There’s nothing people hate to see more than cobwebs or evidence of critters, says Elizabeth Blakeslee, an associate broker with Coldwell Banker in Washington, D.C. The garage should be kept in the same manner as the rest of the house, she says. Make sure it’s tidy, paint the floor and garage door and keep the roof in as good a condition as the one over the rest of the house. To eliminate clutter, it helps to store items close to where they are needed, says Barbara Butensky, director of marketing for GarageTek, a Syosset, NYbased company that makes custom garage organization and storage systems. For example, extra rolls of paper towels and other household items should be kept close to the entrance to the house, while lawn care items might be better kept close to an exit to the yard, she said. In addition, it’s good to keep the kids’ toys and bikes corralled in a spe-

cific corner. It’s preferable to choose one that’s far away from dangerous chemicals or tools, which ideally should be kept locked up for safety reasons.

2. Add shelves and cabinets It’s amazing how much more you can do with a garage and how much better it looks if you just get everything off the floor. Shelving units and cabinets, preferably made out of heavy-duty plastics can help de-clutter the space. “Most garages are not climate controlled, Butensky says. “PVC (cabinets and shelves) holds up the best to moisture heat and cold. It can even take a few hits from kids’ bats and toys and even the garage door. Think you don’t have space for them? Look up. Butensky says cabinets and shelves can often be installed near the ceiling, freeing up precious wall and floor space. Certain large items that don’t get used a lot like kayaks and sleds can also be hung from the ceiling or placed on racks or hangers that hang from the ceiling. GarageTek offers their design service for free, in part to let homeowners know exactly what the renovations will look like and how much it’s going to cost. A fully-equipped onewall shelving and cabinet system typically starts at $2,500, while a full two-car garage with flooring can run between $10,000 and $12,000, Butensky says. Although that may seem like a lot to spend on a garage, the costs can pale in comparison to a kitchen renovation, which can easily cost $50,000 or more for a space half the size of a two-car garage.

3. Renovate

For those whose home just didn’t come with the playroom, art studio or man cave they need, garages can be converted into extra rooms — even small apartments. Butensky says some of her company’s clients have chosen to turn part or all of their garages into a living or recreational space. Projects ranged from something as simple as painting squares for hopscotch or a shuffleboard court on the floor, to the fancy indoor rink complete with synthetic ice that a customer in Palm Beach had installed. The key to any renovation is doing it right. Just like a kitchen or a bathroom, a garage done cheaply and without the right people involved won’t attract buyers or allow you to recoup your investment if you sell, Blakeslee says. Homeowners interested in big projects such as enclosing their garage and turning it into a climatecontrolled extra room need to talk to a realtor to find out if that’s something that reduces the value of homes in their area. Zoning regulations also need to be thoroughly researched, Blakeslee advises. A lack of covered parking usually doesn’t keep a home from selling, as long as it’s not located in part of the country with extreme weather conditions, Blakeslee says. The realtor also noted that she’s seeing an increasing number of homes where the owners have turned their garage into a small apartment, usually to house adult children or elderly parents that need a place to stay, but want to be a little separated from the rest of the house.

56 mpg could be fuel economy target by 2025 By Aaron Kessler Detroit Free Press

WASHINGTON — The White House is ramping up discussions with automakers and elected officials regarding fuel economy standards for 2017-25, and said the government is considering boosting those requirements to 56 miles per gallon by 2025. As the Free Press reported last week, a group of 15 Republicans, former Environmental Protection Agency administrators, governors and members of Congress publicly called on the White House to set a Corporate Average Fuel Economy requirement of more than 60 mpg by 2025 — a 6-percent increase per year. Environmental groups and some EPA officials support the target.

Automakers, dealers and others in the auto industry are pushing for a much lower CAFE standard when federal regulators announce the proposed 2017-25 rules for cars and light trucks in September. A target of 56 mpg would amount to about a 5-percent increase per year during that period. It likely will face stiff auto-industry pushback as negotiations proceed. The White House would not comment specifically on whether administration officials had raised the prospect of 56 mpg. Spokesman Matt Lehrich said “no decision has yet been made yet, but our goal remains to propose the rule this September. “With that target in mind, we are ramping up engagement with auto companies,

members of Congress, labor unions and others as this important proposal is developed, he said in a statement. Ford said its “discussions with the administration are ongoing and productive but declined to disclose any specific targets the White House may have floated. “Ford ... supports increasing fuel economy requirements with one national program that is data driven and factors in the impact of this rule-making on jobs, the economy, consumers and safety, the company said in a statement. Automakers are advocating for one national standard when the proposed rules are announced in September, to avoid states like California instituting their own higher targets for 2025.

Common mistakes parents make when using car seats

By Renee Enna Chicago Tribune

The recently revised car seat recommendation to keep toddlers in rear-facing car seats until age 2 (or until they reach the maximum height and weight for their seat) has been making headlines. But there are many common mistakes parents make when using car seats, say safety professionals who identified several problems,

and solutions, on Parenting magazine’s website, parenting.com: n Selecting the wrong seat: Using the wrong size car seat is a no-no. Buying used car seats is also discouraged; parts could be missing and there is generally a six-year expiration date. The American Academy of Pediatrics offers additional guidelines: aap.org. n Incorrect installation:

Refinancing car loan might be worth savings By Susan Tompor Detroit Free Press

MUSKEGON, Mich. — The rush to refinance doesn’t just apply to homes. Car owners are seeing plenty of promotions, too, now that car loan rates are at low levels. For consumers who don’t owe more on the car than it’s worth, refinancing the car could be one option. But how does it work? And can you save money? Low used-car loan rates make refinancing attractive to some Cutting out a string of café lattes could easily save you $15 or $20 a month. So could cooking pasta instead of grilling a couple of nice steaks. What kind of dough could you save on your car payment? Would you refinance your car loan to save a Jackson each month? Over time, sure, the savings could add up to a couple Benjamins for a full year for many car owners. But is it worth it? Credit unions throughout many parts of the country — as well as some banks — are promoting the idea of reducing your rates by refinancing your car loan. The idea sounds intriguing now that used-car loan rates are at attractive, single-digit lows.

These days, many people are looking to save some coin wherever they can to cope with gas around $4 a gallon and rising food prices. A few folks may even turn to refinancing the car -- instead of the house -- as a way to tap into equity in the car and pay down higher-rate credit card debt or remodel the house. Banks and credit unions want you to refinance because they want your business. Think of the car re-fi as harkening back to the days when banks handed out free toasters to snag new customers. “As any lender today, we’re looking for qualified borrowers,” said Robert L. Kudla, senior vice president of lending for Co-op Services Credit Union in Livonia, Mich. Low car-loan rates are eye-catching. But if you’re borrowing a few thousand dollars, you are not going to save $50 a month if you refinance a car loan. Take a $10,000 48-month car loan. The payment would drop around $18 a month if you went to a 4 percent rate from an 8 percent rate. Some consumers could have a better credit score or be able to borrow at a lower rate than they could a few years ago during the depths of the recession.

Mistakes include routing seatbelts incorrectly and not putting seatbelts in lock mode. Follow both your car seat and car manual, and have a professional double-check your work. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has a search engine that can find inspection sites near you: nhtsa.gov. n Not using the tether: The tether, which is almost always used in a forward-facing

car seat, should be attached to anchors that usually sit behind headrests. The tether keeps the child’s head safely within the parameters of the seat and protects it from hitting the back of the front seat, door frame or window in a crash. Porsche 911 Turbo: Attitude, with a price to match By Steven Cole Smith The Orlando Sentinel

Legends regarding the “hounds of hell” have existed since Greek mythology, but I wasn’t entirely sure what their baying would sound like until the 2011 Porsche 911 Turbo S arrived: Punch the throttle, and there’s a pack of them right behind you, and the sound is both exhilarating and a little terrifying. The all-wheel-drive Turbo S, with a twin-turbocharged, 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine that pumps out 530 horsepower, can be as docile as a puppy when you cruise around town. But it comes with this evil, addictive feature called “launch control”: Find the nearest dragstrip — or in our case, a long private road owned by a friend — and come to a stop. Press the “sport plus” button, place your left foot on the brake and your right foot on the accelerator. Yes, all the way to the floor. Then take your left foot off the brake. The Porsche, all four wheels clawing for traction, leaps forward like a pouncing cougar. The engine sounds like you are destroying it, and you’d think the double clutches in the transmission would fry like eggs on a Florida sidewalk, but there is no post-launch drama. This is what the Porsche 911 Turbo S is built to do, over and over if you like, and one reason it costs $162,460.

2011 PORSCHE 911 TURBO S n Base price: $160,700 n Price as tested:

$162,450

n EPA rating: 17 miles

per gallon city driving, 25 mpg highway n Engine: 3.8-liter, twinturbocharged, 530-horsepower six-cylinder n Transmission: Automatic Length: 176.3 inches n Wheelbase: 95.5 inches n In a nutshell: A future classic, and priced like it.

It is astounding how racetrack-ready this Porsche is, despite the leather interior, Bose stereo, heated seats, power sunroof, navigation system, Bluetooth — anything you’d expect on a luxury car. By far the largest number of entries in sports car races like the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, or the 12 Hours of Sebring, are Porsche 911s. Years ago I track-tested a full-on Porsche race car that later sold for well over $1 million. After climbing into the single carbon fiber seat and cinching up all the safety belts, I asked, “Where is the starter button?” The crew chief said, “This is a Porsche. Turn the key.” That Porsche would put a key in a 200-mile-per-hour race car suggests how serious the company is about maintaining that narrow gap between race car and street car.

That said, what kind of street car does the Porsche 911 Turbo S make? Actually, a very good one. There’s a “Sport” and the aforementioned “Sport Plus” button, either of which stiffens up the suspension and places the transmission shift pattern into a nervous, edgy condition that makes aroundtown driving feel like you’ve had far too much caffeine. But on the regular setting, the 911 is docile and reasonably quiet, with a ride that is comfortable on all but the roughest roads. The 911 has a rear seat, but I’ve yet to actually try and wedge anyone back there. It serves mostly as a convenient, extra storage space, complementing the 3.7-cubic-foot trunk up front. Raise the rear hatch and you’ll find that it’s quite full of engine. One of the most interesting aspects of the car is the PDK transmission, which stands for Porsche Doppelkupplung, meaning it has a dual-clutch gearbox. It operates like a regular automatic transmission, but with the internal clutches, the sensation is very much like a manual transmission’s operation, but you don’t have to shift, and there is no clutch pedal. There are levers on the steering wheel that allow you to shift up and down manually, but the PDK is so competent and intuitive, I just let it shift for itself.

The list of performance features is long and complicated, and includes PASM — Porsche Active Suspension Management — a supersophisticated system that makes split-second adjustments to the firmness of the suspension, based on what the onboard computer is telling it. The all-wheel-drive system is transparent, as it should be, in normal driving, but very evident in “launch control” mode. The huge ceramic composite disc brakes are incredible, and in concert with the massive 19-inch tires, make the 3,500-pound car feel like it weighs far less. Base price of the car was $160,700, and with heated seats ($525) and “Porsche crest on headrests” ($285), total price was $162,460, including shipping. This is a spare-no-expense car, and it feels like it. But Porsche 911 turbo models hold an amazing percentage of their resale value for a very long time, and the 911 Turbo S is the sort of vehicle that I can envision crossing a collector-car auction block in 30 years, and selling for a sort of price a classic deserves. Is it expensive? Oh, my, yes. But when Porsche spares no expense in building it, they expect the handful of customers who can afford it to spare no expense, either. Good for them: They’re getting a remarkable car.
