Welcome to Alexander City

I’

d like to personally welcome you to Alexander City, the home of Lake Martin. The Alexander City Chamber of Commerce would like to ensure your time in our community is fulfilling and enjoyable and that our Southern hospitality exceeds your expectations. Whether you enjoy Lake Martin as a part-time resident, or you live here year-round while functioning daily within the community, the Chamber strives to create an environment that promotes enthusiasm, happiness and success in both your personal and professional lives. My family moved to the Lake Martin community over five years ago, and we frequently discuss that decision being one of the best we’ve ever made. My wife, Meridith, and I have an 8-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son, and we’ve all fallen in love with our forever home. For our children, the educational opportunities afforded by the Alexander City Ed, school system continue to exceed Meridith, expectations. With recent capital Colvin upgrades to our existing schools, it’s and Hvala an exciting time for our commuCollari love nity’s educational system. exploring the lake The Chamber of Commerce believes strongly in retaining our young talent and cultivating their entrepreneurial spirit. The Wildcat Entrepreneurs Academy is a yearlong program that teaches middle and high school students how to start and run their own real businesses. WEA guides high school students through the process of starting and running a legitimate business or social movement over the course of a full academic year. The Alexander City Chamber is proud to provide the Gateway to Education Scholarship Assistance Program, an education/workforce development initiative that provides up to 64 credit hours of free tuition to Benjamin Russell High School graduating seniors attending Central Alabama Community College. Last year alone, Gateway paid more than $159,000 in tuition to CACC for over 60–plus graduates of BRHS. There is no other program like Gateway in the state, and it’s another unique asset that makes our community great. My family relishes the quality time we are blessed to spend on Lake Martin. Exploring Lake Martin’s nearly 900 miles of pristine shoreline is endless fun that provides unlimited tranquility, entertainment and memories. My family has just as much fun off the water in the Alexander City community. We absolutely love downtown Alexander City and consider it a unique treasure. A huge thanks to our Main Street organization, which promotes our historical downtown area. With the great shopping, delicious food and quaint beauty, there is always something to enjoy.

My family loves that throughout the year there is always something to do in Alexander City and the Lake Martin community. The Chamber hosts its annual Sun Festival each June, which encompasses 40-plus events over 10 days. It’s the perfect lead-in to Jazz Fest, which celebrated its 31st anniversary this year, and is a free two-day music festival held on the second weekend in June. Friday night’s festivities take place in downtown Alexander City at Strand Park; then, moves to The AMP on Lake Martin on Saturday night. The goals of these events are to unite our community while attracting tourists throughout the region. We are delighted by the thousands of people who attend these annual events that showcase our wonderful city. The Chamber also oversees an extremely popular and progressive organization known as the Lake Martin Young Professionals. This group coordinates, collaborates and promotes events around Lake Martin that are social, volunteer or informational in nature. Even if you aren’t young or professional, you are still welcome to partake in LMYP events like the New Year’s Eve Casino Night, Polar Plunge, Trivia Nights and Strand Sessions, a live concert series held in Strand Park on the first Thursday of every month from April through August. While our community enjoys a good time, it’s not all play. I’d like to personally invite you to the Lake Martin Innovation Center, which is conveniently located off U.S. Route 280 in Alexander City. This state-ofthe-art facility serves as a business incubator to promote and nurture start-ups and entrepreneurs and also help existing businesses excel. The Innovation Center also offers co-working space for a minimal monthly rate, which includes 24/7 access to the facility, high-speed fiber internet, private conference rooms, complimentary coffee and more. Our local businesses, government and civic organizations play a huge part in the success of the Chamber. We could not succeed without their support. We also rely heavily on volunteer leadership to assist in both day-to-day functions and coordinating events. Our main goal is to help Alexander City thrive economically and to promote all of its wonderful attributes. I want you and your family to enjoy our community as much as we do. Our businesses, our civic organizations, our government and most importantly, our people are what motivate us each and every day to work smarter toward creating a vibrant community that we call home. Join us on this journey and help us continue to make Alexander City great!

ello and welcome to Lake Martin, the treasured lake of Alabama, where laid-back living is more than a vacation – it’s a lifestyle. From beautiful sandy beaches to encapsulating mountainous terrain, the lake is genuinely the South’s best-kept secret. Boasting 41,150 acres, over 880 miles of shoreline, Lake Martin is the perfect place to live, work and play. Martin Dam On Sunday afternoons in the 1920s, local families would pack picnic lunches and travel over dirt roads to visit the construction site of Thomas Martin’s brainchild, the Martin Dam. Martin was the president of Alabama Power Company and a pioneer in the development of the electrical grid system in the Southeast U.S. He chose to build the hydroelectric plant at a place called Cherokee Bluff, a place that was so remote, a railroad had to be built to transport materials to the location. Today, locals share stories that have been passed down through generations of how in the early 1920s, an entire village thrived on the edge of a bluff to construct a 168-foot high, 2,000-foot long concrete wall to hold back the Tallapoosa River. But a lot had to change for Martin’s dream to come true. Whole towns had to be disassembled, relocated and reconstructed above the 491-foot waterline. Cemeteries were moved to higher ground; timber was cleared; and bridges were built – all in advance of the rising water that inevitably created our treasured Lake Martin. The Lake Lake Martin drains more than 3,000 square miles of watershed. A lot of that acreage is undeveloped, which is good for the lake’s ecosystem. With minimal upstream development and the filtration of the natural woodlands along the banks of its tributaries, Lake Martin is the only body of water in the

state of Alabama to meet the stringent environmental requirements of a Treasured Alabama Lake. That means clean, clear water. Visibility is as much as 20 feet or more in many areas of the lake, and in most places, swimmers can easily see their toes. The lake is at full pool– 491 feet above mean sea level – from late April to early September with about two months of transition time between seasons. The winter water level routinely is set at 484 feet msl. This year, the lake level will drop 10 feet between seasons instead of the standard 7 feet, allowing homeowners access to docks and piers for essential maintenance work. The lower water level also presents other opportunities, including eradicating invasive weed growth and more thorough trash and litter cleanup efforts. When wet conditions prevail, Lake Martin sometimes stays at full summer pool level until Oct. 15. 8 | 2021-2022 THE SOUTH'S BEST KEPT SECRET

These conditions could be expected about once every four-to-six years and are determined by strict regulations stipulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and implemented by Alabama Power Company. Lake Martin’s primary function is to protect homes in the Tallapoosa River Basin – and the people who live in them – from floodwaters. The waters also turn four 230-ton turbines that can generate enough electricity to power 45,000 homes; beyond that, her purpose is recreational. And what a place to play! Lake Martin draws visitors from across the country who come here to boat, fish, swim, ski, wakeboard, camp, bird watch, site-see, relax, retire and live. The lake supports 13 marinas; a dozen restaurants; three golf courses; one of Alabama’s largest state park campgrounds, which includes a forest-canopy zip

line, a putt-putt golf course and 20 miles of equestrian trails; two sailing clubs; numerous fishing clubs; several beaches and more than 150 miles of hiking trails. The most popular landmarks include Chimney Rock, Goat Island, the Smith Mountain fire tower, the Children’s Harbor lighthouse at Kowaliga and Blue Creek. Part of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s central division, marine patrol officers monitor activities on the lake 24/7 to enhance safety and promote responsible use of the waterway. Three groups of hardworking, dedicated volunteers keep Lake Martin clean and advocate for her welfare: Lake Martin Resource Association, Lake Watch Lake Martin and the Lake Martin Home Owners and Boatowners. LMRA funds, places and maintains more than 400 hazard buoys that mark shallow areas, submerged rocks and no-wake zones on Lake Martin. LMRA also orga-

nizes annual cleanups during the winter water level drawdown and coordinates Alabama Power Company’s Adopt-an-Island and Adopt-a-Shoreline programs. Lake Watch Lake Martin volunteers monitor water chemistry and cleanliness to maintain the high environmental standards that won the lake’s designation as the only Alabama lake to meet the strict requirements for Treasured Lake status. Lake Martin HOBOs work with local businesses and local, state and federal agencies to preserve, protect, and enhance the overall quality of life at Lake Martin pertaining to water levels and quality, shoreline preservation, fishing, wildlife, recreation and safety. It is the work of these organizations, their membership and volunteers that make Lake Martin a great place to live, work and play. et in the heart of Alexander City, the Historic Downtown District is the lifeblood of the community. Annual celebrations of the community’s rich history, culture and artisanal talent highlight the calendar. In addition, the downtown corridor plays host to nearly every community event throughout the year as people from all over join together in celebratory fashion no matter the occasion. Patrons may peruse the shops or select to dine at one of the many restaurants located on the downtown corridor. From Caribbean cuisine to the best wings in Alexander City, everyone can find something to satisfy their taste buds. And when mealtime is over, the locally owned shops are ready for exploration, shelves brimming with new discoveries each visit. “All of our locally owned businesses offer shopping and dining options that are one-of-a-kind to Alexander City,” said Main Street Alexander City Executive 12 | 2021-2022 THE SOUTH'S BEST KEPT SECRET

The Square in downtown Alexander City makes for a beautiful location to host events or spend a Saturday afternoon perusing the shops

Director Stacey Jeffcoat. “We try to provide people with something to do to spend their time and money downtown.” In addition to a rich history, cute, whimsical boutiques and delicious cuisine, Main Street works to forge a downtown atmosphere where everyone knows everyone’s name and people want to stick around. “Main Street hosts events year-round that cater to a wide demographic, so there is something for everyone. My job is to bring people downtown and showcase what we have to offer,” Jeffcoat said. Many events attract people from surrounding areas, including second-home owners at Lake Martin and families that visit the area for the day or weekend. Last fall, trees belonging to the downtown corridor were professionally wrapped in LED lights. The lights work on timers and turn on at night year-round, not just during holidays or special events.

“This not only adds ambiance to the town, but studies show that lighting affects how much time people spend in a location. They’re more likely to linger if the lighting is ambient and the atmosphere is cozy,” Jeffcoat said. “We strive to assist the businesses down here, market them and their services outside the area, recruit new businesses to downtown, maintain the historical integrity of downtown, and plan events that bring people into our downtown,” Jeffcoat said. Jeffcoat has an array of duties associated with her title, including fundraising, planning events, marketing Main Street and all the downtown merchants, getting information out to the merchants as needed and other organizational duties. Summer events include: Third Thursday, Bingo Under the Stars and the Farmers Market, which takes place every Saturday beginning June 5 through the end of September. This August, Main Street will host the inaugural Lake Martin Song Writers Festival, showcasing 14 songwriters and five days of music from all over the Lake Martin area. Festivities will begin on Aug. 17 and conclude with A Little Love concert featuring the Wilson Brothers on Aug. 21 at Strand Park. Other events that Main Street is known to include the First Responders Appreciation Lunch in September. In October and November, Main Street

hosts The Great Pumpkin Patch in Strand Park, Kids Karnival in Strand Park, Harvest Market, Downtown Trick or Treat and Monster Mash Street Bash, Costume Contest on Main Street. And ending the year strong, they put together a delightful event for the holidays that no patron would want to miss. So make sure to come out this year for the 3rd Annual Downtown Christmas. There will be live music, pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus, a Princess Party, Sleigh Rides and so much more. “Main Street Alexander City supports local businesses, creates opportunities and experiences for residents and draws newcomers to the area with its distinctive brand. The more Main Street improves and maintains the heart of Alexander City, the more the town will continue to prosper,” Jeffcoat said.

Call someone to let him or her know when going out for a boat ride. Be sure that person knows the location of the ride, registration of the boat, contact information and an estimated time of return.

Boating under the influence

The blood alcohol content legal limit for lake driving is the same as on the road at .08 percent and applies to any kind of water transportation device. The punishment for BUI can result in loss of license, jail time and a great deal of expense. Also, a person can become dehydrated more quickly when drinking in the sun.

Know the rules

The boat owner is responsible for all passengers and for who they allow to operate the vehicle. Since the 1994 passage of the Roberson/Archer Act, the age requirement to operate a boat while supervised by someone over 21 is 12 years or older. At age 14, a licensed person is allowed to operate fully on his or her own. Register the boat and renew the registration every year. Make sure the numbers are posted clearly on the sides of the boat as well. Have license and registration on the boat every time the boat is out. Know what the hazard buoys look like, and know what they mean; be sure to keep 50 yards from them and do not travel between two hazard buoys. When operating a personal watercraft, remember that it runs on power steering. Robinett said those not used to driving PWCs let off the gas to slow down and then lose the ability to steer. Every boat has on board plate that states the vehicle’s maximum capacity in weight or number of people. If either limit is over the stated capacity, the boat operator could be penalized. Robinett said no specific laws or rules have changed since last boating season. The marine police on Lake Martin also cover 32 counties and 14 bodies of water, and there is often an issue of manpower, he said. Resources and availability are limited and not always immediately available, so it helps when people follow the rules.

T

he Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail in East Central Alabama includes 40 sites spanning nine counties, from Alabama’s highest mountain to the shores of Lake Martin. Lake Martin boasts more than 175 miles of free public trails through picturesque landscapes with interesting rock formations, wildlife sighting opportunities and terrain to fit every skill level. The lake’s west, east, south and central shorelines all offer opportunities for unique outdoor experiences on well-maintained routes. The following trails are open all year long, but cool weather hiking is preferred, as it is more comfortable than hiking in the summer heat. The largest section of trails winds through Russell Forest from Willow Point to Russell Crossroads off state Route 63. Here, more than 125 miles of pathways take hikers over rolling hills, into protected valleys and across meandering streams. On the east and south shorelines, Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Association has built and maintains more than 26 miles of footpath-only trails in three locations, including an outdoor education center at the restored Smith Mountain Fire Tower. CRATA’s Smith Mountain trail system consists of four trails of varying lengths and terrain, from easy to rugged. The entire Island Hop Trail can be accessed only at low water, so plan to hike this trail before or very soon after Feb. 19, when the lake begins to fill to summer pool levels. The Little Smith Mountain Loop Trail, at 2.6 miles, treats hikers to spectacular views and unique rock formations, but this trail also hugs sheer cliffs and difficult terrain. It is not a trail for small children. 20 | 2021-2022 THE SOUTH'S BEST KEPT SECRET

The view from the 90-foot fire tower at Smith Mountain rivals any other view of the lake, as the tower tops the highest point along Lake Martin’s 880 miles of shoreline. Bald eagles are regularly spotted over the lake; wild turkeys are abundant in the lush hardwood forests that surround the trail, as are other traditional woodland birds. At Overlook Park on the east shoreline just north of Martin Dam, three CRATA trails intertwine, so hikers could choose a variety of routes from 1 to 7 miles. Provided by Alabama Power and built and maintained by CRATA volunteers, the park at the trailhead includes picnic tables and an observation platform that shows off another spectacular view of Lake Martin. Bald Eagles are spotted regularly over the lake; Wild Turkeys are abundant in the lush hardwood forests that surround the trail, as are other traditional woodland birds. Situated just north of the Overlook trail system, the James M. Scott Deadening Alpine Trail is a challenging 4.2mile loop along a ridge that parallels Lake Martin’s famed Chimney Rock formation on Acapulco Rock Island. The Needle’s Eye and Jasmine Bluff are popular formations along the trail, which offers numerous vistas at which hikers could rest, enjoy a snack or catch their breath. The trail often treats hikers to up-close views of wildlife, as eagles are known to roost along the bluff. The Deadening Trail is a rewarding trek for experienced hikers but is not recommended for the novice or anyone under the age of 12. Pets must be on leash at all times, and hikers are urged to use care on the rough terrain. CRATA’s most recent trail system continues to expand on the west shoreline south of Martin Dam. This easyto-moderate trail treats hikers to the beauty of nature at its best with woods, water and wildlife at every turn. The Cherokee Bluffs Dam Railroad Trail follows the old railroad bed that was used in the construction of Martin Dam some 100 years ago. Follow the highline or lowline paths and visit Saddle Rock Mountain, the highest point in Elmore County. The lowline trail ends at Channahatchee Creek for now. CRATA volunteers are in the planning and design phase for a bridge that will span the creek and con-

tinue the trail to Kent, where a point-to-point trail shuttle service will be available. Wind Creek State Park features 5.6 miles of hiking trails and 20 miles of horse trails. The Alabama Reunion Trail takes hikers past an old home site, over picturesque hardwood bottoms and through stands of pine. There is an abundance of bird and animal life along the trail, which offers moderate to difficult terrain. The Campfire Trail features a series of rock outcroppings and a stream that bisects the path. A nominal day-use fee applies for admittance to the park. Charles E. Bailey Sportplex Fun for kids and adults

S

urrounded by 212 lush acres of Alexander City’s most beautiful and natural landscape, the Alexander City Sportplex offers everything from an archery range to a horse-riding arena. Families flock to the sportplex on weeknights and weekends to watch their kids, nieces and nephews play ball. Whether it be softball, baseball, football, soccer or basketball, there is a field or court for it all. Adults can even participate in athletics at the sportplex as there are adult leagues for kickball, flag football, softball and basketball. For those who are less athletically inclined, the sportplex has many lovely areas to sit back and let the kids enjoy one of the two playgrounds on the grounds, share a nice picnic either in the open air or under one of the many pavilions or visit the dog park and allow the little fur babies to run and play with their friends. The most recent upgrade to the sportplex came last summer when the city added the Splashplex, which quickly became a favorite place to play for both locals and visitors. The splash pad includes fountains and bucket drops for kids as well as a shaded pavilion for parents, and the best part, it is entirely free to use, as are most of the facilities at the sportplex; however, patrons can also rent the pavilion for events for just $25. The park is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and is run by the parks and recreation department. The park’s other amenities include the archery range and horse-riding arena, both of which require scheduled use. The archery range can be booked for use by contacting Alexander City Archery Club president Chad Mann at 256-794-5541. For the use of the horse22 | 2021-2022 THE SOUTH'S BEST KEPT SECRET

riding arena, contact Alexander City Horse Riding Club president Jimmy Avery at 256-234-2925. There is also a disc golf course that features nine holes and an outdoor fitness circuit set up by the Leadership Lake Martin Class of 2008. The sportplex is also home to the Martin-Savarese Stadium, where the Benjamin Russell High School football and soccer teams host home games. In addition, the Wildcat softball and baseball teams play in the sportplex. Because of the vast nature of the softball and baseball complexes, the sportplex typically hosts multiple regional and state tournaments throughout the year and many travel ball tournaments. “Every weekend during the summer is usually booked with a travel ball tournament,” Alexander City Parks and Recreation Department Director Sonny Wilson said. “Sometimes they are one-day tournaments, and other times they are two- or three-day tournaments. And sometimes we even have horse shows at the same time we have tournaments. So there are always people coming in and out of our facilities, and we are here to make sure they have what they need.” The sportplex boasts four softball fields, one high school baseball field and four smaller baseball fields. Basketball is also an option at the sportplex. The Eva Fuller Community Center is home to a full-size basketball gym, where youth leagues and adult games are played. The gym is open to the public for anyone who wants to participate in open shooting. “We take pride in our parks and facilities. We hope that you and your family will take advantage of everything they have to offer,” Wilson said.

Wind Creek Where you are never too old to play outdoors STORY BY BETSY ILER PHOTOS BY CLIFF WILLIAMS & BETSY ILER

ind Creek State Park is the third most profitable park in the state of Alabama. In May, the director of Alabama’s state park system, Greg Lein met with engineers and architects to discuss options for improvements and campsite renovations at Wind Creek. Lein said the meeting was advance planning for funding that may be available if a bond issue for system-wide improvements is approved by voters next year. Improvements at Lake Martin’s state park are a priority, Lein said, as cabin and campsite rentals, which more than doubled at the park last year during COVID-19 travel restrictions, continued to rise into summer 2021. “Wind Creek is a core park. Most of its revenues come from camping and day use. That’s different from the resort parks in the system, which are designed around other amenities,” Lein said. “I think we’ve turned the corner here to attract people in the shoulder seasons and in the winter, as well. We’d like to see more of those winter customers, and I think we may find that many of the visitors to those resort parks may find this park, which is on a lake, attractive also.” Lein said last spring's conversation focused on upgrading at least one section of existing campsites to include 50-amp electrical service and adding more cabins. These accommodations at Wind Creek are filled to capacity almost year-round now, according to the park’s superintendent, Bruce Adams. While the park contributed some $377,304 in

profit to the state system’s bottom line in pre-COVID fiscal year 2019, profits soared to $922,784 for the fiscal year ended September 2020. Adams said the park is busier this year than it was last year and is on track to top last year’s camper numbers. “We had a lot of new campers last year, and I think they figured out they’re liking it, and they’re coming back,” Adams said. That’s the story for Montgomery’s Randy Taunton. “We go to the beach, and it’s not like this. There’s nothing like being at Wind Creek,” Taunton said. “There’s no traffic. This is just relaxing. We love the campfires in the evening, the smell in the air of people cooking. Everybody here is neighborly.” Taunton had snagged a site midweek last spring's and was preparing for a visit from his grandchildren over the weekend. “I’ve taught them how to fish, and they love it. Taught them how to bait their hook, how to throw. Right now, I’m just looking for a good fishing spot to take them to here this weekend,” he said. Local guests like Taunton make up a high percentage of the park’s overnight guests, Adams said. The majority of the 183,482 nights rented in cabins and campsites last fiscal year were rented by Alabama residents, like Alexander City’s Robert Meniefield and his family. The Meniefields rented a cabin over Mother’s Day weekend, but they come as often as they can to cook out and enjoy the recreational activities the park

offers, including a large, multi-feature playground in the campground. “I give this park a 10 out of 10,” said Meniefield’s son Zy, “because that’s as high as it can go. If it went higher, I would give it more.” The putt-putt course is one of several value-added amenities offered by the park. Last fiscal year, more than 3,200 park patrons played a round of mini-golf on the course. More than 9,500 patrons used the boat launch at the park marina, and more than 25,500 customers visited the on-site country store. Fishing tournaments launch from the marina year-round, several of which have been televised on national networks, including professional Bassmaster Elite Series events. “The marina did $411,000 in sales in 2020 and $151,000 in boat rentals,” Adams said. Boat and RV storage revenues last year were nearly $150,000. “Our storage is not covered, so we can’t charge what these new places going up around the lake can charge, but we stay full,” Adams said. The park also partners with concessionaires, private business owners that operate within Wind Creek State Park and pay a percentage of their revenues for the privilege. Creem at the Creek, a seasonal snack bar in the day-use area of the park, grossed more than $13,000 within the first few weeks of operation this year. The Screaming Eagle Zipline canopy tours also contribute to the park’s bottom line. The canopy tour offers 11 ziplines and six skywalks in the trees above the day-use areas of the park – some 20 to 70 feet in the air and up to 650 feet in length. Visit alapark.com/parks/wind-creek-statepark/zipline-canopy-tours for costs, age and weight limits and to make reservations. The park offers a variety of additional recreational opportunities as well. Waterfront campers can launch kayaks or tie up boats below their campsites, taking advantage of sunny afternoons to paddle, explore, bird watch or admire the beauty of the lake. Others float mats, inflatable chairs or tubes in the water to soak up the rays and cool off or spend warm early evenings catching fish. Riding bicycles is another popular past time and great exercise, as Wind Creek has more than enough miles of roads inside the campground gate alone. It’s easy for campers to make their own fun at Wind Creek State Park. David and Kim Patrick of Prattville spend two weeks at the park three times a year. When the weather is promising, they bring their turquoise 1958 custom built teardrop camper, which they pull with a restored 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air in the same color. They have owned the car for 25 years and go all out with the 50s-era color with their tent, chairs, rugs and other comfort items. Devon Ragsdale of Sylacauga and his family come to the park once a month to spend time with his children’s grandparents. Ragsdale cooks a big breakfast on the grill when they visit, and the delectable aroma of 26 | 2021-2022 THE SOUTH'S BEST KEPT SECRET

bacon fills the morning air. With more than 560 campsites, Wind Creek’s campground is one of the largest state-operated campgrounds in the U.S. All campsites include water and electrical hook-ups; 268 sites also include sewer, and 157 are right on the water. There are 39 premium campsites – known locally as the Hollywood section – that have been renovated with 16-foot wide and 60-foot long concrete pads with 50-amp electrical service, waterfront access, cable and Wi-Fi. Pets are welcome, but check at the park office for rules regarding pets. Rates vary according to season and accommodations. Make campsite reservations online at reservealapark.com. While premium section sites must be reserved online for seven days in season, other sites in the park can be reserved for shorter periods of time, and the park staff is happy to upgrade a camper to a premium site for fewer than seven days if a premium site is available upon check-in. This policy has helped to keep premium sites occupied on weekdays. “We try to be as accommodating as possible,” Adams explained. Taunton said he watches the online reservations for the campground’s premier sites daily and pounces upon cancellations whenever he can make the trip. “We’re always ready to come up here at any time,” he said with a smile. Outside the campground, Wind Creek hums with family reunions and birthday parties in the picnic areas, and the swimming beach rings with laughter and cheers from sun up to sun down. Pick-up volley ball games are popular at the beach as well, and the park offers more than 30 miles of trails for hikers, bikers and horse riders. Vulcan Orienteering Club hosts two events at the park each year, and a number of riding clubs organize horse rides and competitions. A military vehicle display also visits the park each year. Managing the park is the responsibility of Adams, who is assisted by Larrmy Warren and a full time staff of 17. Seasonal employees swell the ranks to 26, along with a group of dedicated volunteers that, among other tasks, plan and host some of the park’s most popular seasonal events. These include the annual spring Easter egg hunt and the October fall festival, which is attended by thousands of visitors in costume 28 | 2021-2022 THE SOUTH'S BEST KEPT SECRET

every year. Throughout the summer, a schedule of activities unfolds for campers, visitors and guests. Nature hikes, movies, games, watermelon carving and rock painting are among the activities offered. In addition, park personnel are heavily involved in the lake community. The park is the busiest of four-to-six locations where dumpsters are available during the annual Renew Our Rivers cleanup each year. An Alabama Power program that is coordinated locally by Lake Martin Resource Association, ROR has removed more than 122 tons of trash from Lake Martin. In addition to hosting volunteers during the event, park personnel retrieve volunteers’ bags of trash on area roadsides. They participate in local tourism efforts, and last year, the park contributed $198,311 to the local communities through lodging taxes. The community supports the campground with resources as well. During organized cleanups, the community turns out to help keep the park clean, especially groups of school children and Scouts, Adams said. “The street department in Alexander City occasionally helps us fill pot holes, repair guard rails and deal with major water or sewer issues. Russell Lands has helped us and Russell Do it Center. Alabama Power is great to us, especially with upgrading. They don’t just repair what’s broken when something needs attention: They upgrade it. “And when tornadoes came through the area a few years back, people just showed up to help us clean it up. The Home Depot brought a pallet of water and rakes.” Local businesses advertise annually on the map brochure that is distributed to campers at the registration office, which keeps costs down for the park and encourages campers to visit stores and contribute to the local economy. The local Walmart also stocks an aisle with RV supplies. The upgrades that Lein would like to see at Wind Creek State Park could be available to park patrons as early as 2023. “Wind Creek is very important to the state park system. It is a great example of where we come from. It is not a resort park but a core park. It’s main attractions are camping and day use, and so many people enjoy coming out to this park,” he said. “We just want to support that.”

n any given summer weekend, residents and visitors to Lake Martin could choose from more than a dozen live entertainment options, from concerts to arts festivals, live theater, storytelling and more. These events – often supported through the sponsorship of local businesses – improve the quality of life in the Alexander City area in a variety of venues all around the lake. The Lake Martin Amphitheater on the lake’s western shoreline invites patrons to exclusive performances by nationally known performers with its summer concert series that opens on Memorial Day weekend and closes Labor Day weekend. The AMP’s fireworks production on July 4th is hailed as one of the best across the Southeast. In addition, the AMP has hosted other activities, including an annual Wild Game Cook-off series’ event with the Alabama Wildlife Federation, which is headquartered nearby in Millbrook. The June concert at the AMP is the second in the annual Alex City Jazz Fest series. The first concert in this free twonight series is held at Strand Park in downtown Alexander City. This free series presents six bands over two nights and is hosted by the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce. The Jazz Fest series began more than 30 years ago when a local clothing store in Alexander City hosted a concert on its 100th anniversary in business. The Town Green at Russell Crossroads features a free weekly music series every Friday night from mid-May through September. Friday on the Green invites lake comers to bring a picnic and a bottle of wine and meet their friends on the grassy lawn to start the lake weekend with a little good music, laughter and lawn games. Nonprofit arts and culture organizations like Alex City Arts bring touring live performances to the lake area four to five times a year. Recent productions have included 7 Bridges Band, the Vienna Boys Choir and storyteller Delores Hydock. Alexander City Theatre II showcases local talent in seasonal community theater productions. Alexander City’s Strand Park also features the Strand 30 | 2021-2022 THE SOUTH'S BEST KEPT SECRET

Sessions series, a free concert in the park on the first Thursday of each month, sponsored by the Lake Martin Young Professionals. Additional music events and other activities in Alexander City and around the lake are held throughout the week of Sun Festival. This celebration of summer provides entertainment for all ages through more than 25 individual events, including a communitywide scavenger hunt, arts, exercises, sundae making, a baking contest and more. At the Stillwaters Golf clubhouse on the eastern shore of Lake Martin, Copper’s Grill also offers weekly concerts on its picturesque lawn overlooking the beautiful golf course. Diners at any number of lake area restaurants will find live musical entertainment on weekends, and some offer other activities as well. Niffers at the Lake hosts trivia contest and bingo with proceeds benefitting local charities. Cornhole tournaments that are open to all take place at The Landing at Parker Creek, where the fun matches the intensity of the competition. Chuckwalla’s Pizza at Chuck’s Marina hosts music, a wine club, art shows, fishing tournaments and a charity duck derby to benefit a local charity. And there’s more. The lake area abounds with music, arts and other entertainment all summer long and throughout the year.

A Clean Community Partnership Campfire girls clean up

Litter-free shorelines and clean roadsides create economic value for Lake Martin STORY BY JOHN THOMPSON

Lake Martin Community Works Together Lake Martin Resource Association has been working for the Lake Martin community since 1972. Throughout the years, efforts have been made to solicit the support of volunteers, businesses, associations and other organizations that share an interest in protecting Lake Martin for future generations to love and enjoy outdoor activities. These efforts are focused on boating safety, environmental education, property protection and membership advocacy. A recent impact study revealed that Lake Martin is the economic engine for a three-county area, Tallapoosa, Coosa and Elmore. Therefore, environmental beautification and protection is critical to everyone that enjoys Lake Martin.

Renew our Rivers

LMRA has partnered with Alabama Power Company, Russell Lands, Advanced Disposal, Wind Creek State Park, TowBoat US Lake Martin, Lake magazine and Lake Martin Dock Company in the annual Renew Our Rivers cleanup of Lake Martin. Over the past 18 years, this enormous effort has removed more than 160 tons of trash from the shoreline and roadways surrounding Lake Martin. Additionally, more than 1,000 automotive tires have been removed and recycled. This event is usually scheduled in early November when the lake level is at winter pool, making it easier for volunteers to remove litter.

Treasured Mile

The Treasured Mile Program is a partnership program established by the LMRA with sponsorship from Russell Lands and Alabama Power Company that allows for recreational, volunteer public participation in controlling litter year-round at Lake Martin by adopting a shoreline segment or adopting an APC owned island. Individuals, families, educational institutions, houses of worship, organizations, civic groups, youth groups and businesses are all invited to adopt a section of shoreline or an APC island in order to help control 32 | 2021-2022 THE SOUTH'S BEST KEPT SECRET

litter and maintain these areas to provide beauty and openness for the benefit of the public and also assist in providing for a cleaner, healthier and more attractive recreational environment at Lake Martin. This program has been a tremendous success and has helped keep Lake Martin shoreline litter-free yearround. LMRA has also worked to develop a Clean Community Partnership approach to address roadside litter.

Clean Community Partnership

In an effort to get more volunteer involvement and build pride within the community, partnerships have been formed, which include the chambers of commerce in both Alexander City and Dadeville, as well as the utility departments in both cities, Russell Lands, County Commissioners Steve Robinson and John McKelvey, Lake Martin Tourism, Tallapoosa County Tourism, LMRA and many volunteers. The focus of this group is to establish community roadside cleanups on a regular basis. This initiative has resulted in the creation of regularly scheduled cleanups, which include a First Saturday cleanup in Dadeville, a Third Saturday cleanup in Alexander City, community cleanups in Commissioner John McKelvey’s district and a 63 Pride Drive cleanup on state Highway 63, which is considered the gateway to Lake Martin.

Lake Martin Community Pride

Clean, litter-free lake shorelines combined with clean roadsides create tremendous economic value for the Lake Martin community. In addition, locals want visitors and investors to drive through a clean environment that demonstrates the pride residents have in the community. Everyone can play a part by being a good citizen and participating in a cleanup. Information on scheduled cleanups can be found in all TPI publications or follow the social media pages for Clean Community Partnership, Lake Martin Tourism and Tallapoosa County Tourism.

lexander City is truly the place where everybody knows your name. Locals, newcomers and visitors alike fall in love with the city’s Southern charm. People still wave when driving down the streets or when on the water in their boats. People here still pull onto the road’s shoulder for emergency vehicles to pass when the lights are on and even greet one another at the gas pump or the grocery stores. The friendly, Southern hospitality prevalent in Alexander City today is the driving force of its growing community and economy. And growing Alexander City is, indeed. A few years ago, the City of Alexander City 34 | 2021-2022 THE SOUTH'S BEST KEPT SECRET

acquired a beautiful office building nestled right off of U.S. Route 280 that used to be known as the Russell Sales Office. After sitting vacant for nearly 20 years, the building underwent massive renovations to create what is now known as The Alexander City Municipal Complex. As a newcomer, this will be a place you frequent often. The new municipal complex opened its doors to the public in April of 2021. But on Feb. 19, 2021, Scooters Coffee opened its first Alabama location in Alexander City, which led to other restaurant announcements for locations already in the pipeline, including Wharf Casual Seafood and Chick-fil-A. The news of these additions is both excit-

Retail stores also made their way to the city as Burkes Outlet and America’s Thrift Store, both situated on the U.S. Route 280 corridor, opened their doors in 2021. In addition, a new shopping center, anchored by Publix, is soon to be located at the key intersection of U.S. Route 280 and state Route 63. The developer will also have space for a national retail store, space for other shops and out parcels for restaurants and freestanding businesses. And for boating enthusiasts, Russell Marine Boating

& Outdoors made its debut on the U.S. Route 280 corridor, as well. This facility is the 150,000-squarefoot showroom for both new and gently used boats. It also offers a pro shop for wakeboarders, a service center and a sales location for Can-Am off-road vehicles. Russell Marine is a leader in the marine business in Alabama with four state-of-the-art marinas on Lake Martin. This showroom is a must-see for any local, newcomer or visitor to the area. In addition to an onslaught of eateries and shops, communities are growing. The Heritage, a Russell Lands lakefront annexation, is the next large neighborhood to hit state Route 63. The recent announcement of the addition of the Benjamin Russell Center for Advanced Care will be a huge benefit to the community, as well. Russell Medical is a five-star-rated hospital and cancer center, and with the aging of the Baby Boomer generation, the timing is ideal. This facility will provide medical care for those of advanced age. The campus will consist of the Advanced Care Center, cottages for residents seeking proximity to senior care and an assisted living facility. Bringing new jobs to area is Colorado-based Westwater Resources. Their decision to locate its $80 million graphite processing plant in the Alexander City area was a major economic development milestone announced in June by Gov. Kay Ivey. As a newcomer to the area, you and yours will not only experience this monumental time of growth but will also become a part of it. So please sit back and tighten the seatbelt because it is going to be an exciting ride.

A Work of Heart STORY BY BRITTANY SMITH

A

lexander City offers a variety of opportunities to get involved and give back to the community. Its organizations rely heavily on volunteers to adequately achieve their missions. Whether it’s a one-time event or time committed on a regular basis, community members are always needed at local nonprofits and chambers of commerce. “Main Street is a non-profit organization that depends on donations and volunteers. Projects such as lighting, flowers, events and the mural all benefit our downtown and community. Beautification projects such as these help recruit businesses and bring customers to our shops and restaurants. Downtown is the heartbeat of our community,” Main Street Director Stacey Jeffcoat said. Whether interested in volunteering during events, assisting with design and beautification plans or simply aiding with organizational efforts in the office, there are plentiful options. “We always need help with our events, during the Farmers Market, help getting ready for board meetings, design projects, volunteers to be on our committees and more,” Jeffcoat said. “Whatever you might be interested in, I can guarantee we can find the perfect spot for you within Main Street’s program.” With Main Street invested in the betterment of the community, Jeffcoat said, it’s also a great way for residents to give back to their hometown. Lake Martin Area United Way is another great option for someone looking to volunteer as much or as little time as they can to help with local nonprofits. LMAUW serves 27 partnering agencies in the area, all who rely heavily on input from the community to function and serve residents. “We can help everyone get connected to volunteer,” United Way director Sharon Fuller said. “There are so many opportunities to give back to the community, and we try to match people up with a cause that they have an interest in.” Fuller said that the volunteer pool took a blow last year, dropping from 689 volunteers in 2019 to just 114 in 2020 due to COVID-19. LMAUW is now, more than ever, looking for volunteers, whether it is for a United Way project, a Main Street event or a local animal shelter. “We work closely with other businesses around town, and we are happy to be the conduit of information,” Fuller said. “Our whole area is very giving. If there is a need and we push it out there, someone will pick it right up.” The LMAUW has a plethora of events planned for the remainder of the year, and they hope to regain volunteer numbers and even surpass those from years past. “Our annual fashion show is coming up. We love this event because it promotes the local shops and encourages people to shop small. We also host a silent auction and an annual quail fry and bake sale auction, which believe it or not is one event. We can use volunteers for all of them. We could not do fundraisers without volunteers.” Fuller said. 38 | 2021-2022 THE SOUTH'S BEST KEPT SECRET

Other great events that the LMAUW hosts each year are the Annual Wedding and Event Expo at the Mitchell House in Dadeville every February, as well as the 100 Homes Golf Marathons and Bingos. But events are not the only way to get involved with LMAUW. For those who are more numbers oriented, they work hand in hand with a group who processes tax returns for people in the community free of charge. The LMAUW will train any volunteer who is interested in this venture. They also offer an opportunity to get involved with search and rescue with the rescue squad. This group of volunteers is among the first on scene when someone or something goes awry on the water in Tallapoosa and Coosa counties. This is one of the more popular volunteer options for retired law enforcement and military personel, Fuller said. Fuller invites all who can and will to get involved at LMAUW. The Alexander City Chamber of Commerce also relies on volunteers for their annual functions. “There is an opportunity for everyone in the community to get involved somehow,” Chamber Vice President of Marketing and Special Events Kim Dunn said. “One of our more popular programs is the ambassador program.” As a member of the ambassador program, participants provide extra hands at chamber events and work synergistically with the board to ensure that all events have ambassadors present. “We invite them to ribbon cuttings, groundbreakings, Business After Hours and we typically meet the first Friday of each month to talk about what’s going on, what’s coming up and where we need help,” Dunn said. “It’s really just a volunteer opportunity to meet new people, learn and grow themselves and their business.” The ambassador program is a great networking opportunity for everyone in the community, and there is always something for everyone. Some ambassadors volunteer to lend a hand and others use it as a stepping-stone toward other areas of leadership. “I always say, ‘If everyone does what they can do, then it all gets done,’” Dunn said. “Some ambassadors are perfectly content being an ambassador and others enjoy the leadership-type roles. We have all different personalities and opportunities. “Another way to get involved is by volunteering to help with Sun Festival or Jazz Fest. These particular events are especially popular among students who need community service hours for school, but anyone can volunteer. We recruit on our Facebook and other social media outlets when we are looking for volunteers for these events, and if someone is interested, we would definitely put them to work.”

rom quality live performances to award-winning art, the Lake Martin area is blessed with a wide variety of artists and arts organizations that inspire, entertain and improve the quality of life in Tallapoosa County. Alexander City Theatre II, a nonprofit community theatre company focused on showcasing the talents of local townspeople in live stage productions, presents an annual season that includes classic and original plays. The troupe reopened this spring, after COVID-19 restrictions canceled the 2020 season, with a free showing of Alfred Uhry’s Pulitzer Prize winning script, “Driving Miss Daisy.” Presented outdoors and socially distanced at the Town Green at Russell Crossroads, this event was open to the public free of charge, thanks to the sponsorship of local businesses and individuals. ACT II’s September production of Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite also will be open to the community at no charge. Presented on the Betty Carol Graham Center stage on the Alexander City campus of Central Alabama Community College, this highly acclaimed 1968 comedy in three acts 44 | 2021-2022 THE SOUTH'S BEST KEPT SECRET

has a long-standing reputation as one of most hilarious scripts from one of Broadway’s most popular playwrights. The remaining ACT II 2021 season will include a cemetery tour in late October and a live presentation of It’s a Wonderful Life, A Live Radio Play by Joe Landry. Visit actheatre2.com for performance dates, locations and details. Traveling productions and concerts are presented throughout the year by Alex City Arts, a nonprofit presenter organization that brings popular, award-winning music and theater productions to the area, including the Vienna Boys Choir, Virginia Samford Theater and more. This year’s ACA offerings will include October’s Cashback, a tribute to Johnny and Jane Carter Cash; the return of 7 Bridges Band, the ultimate Eagles experience in November; Longineu Parsons’ What a Wonderful World tribute to Louis Armstrong in February; and a March appearance by Martin musical heritage group, Rockland Road. The area also is a hotspot for artists and art lovers who meet through a number of juried arts events all around the lake.
