Food truck event to benefit Family Sunshine Center

The Family Sunshine Center is hoping a food truck event will not only raise some money for the organization but, more importantly, raise awareness about the organization.

Executive Director Tay Knight said the Oct. 22 event at the Wetumpka Farmers Market will also be the introduction of an organization under the center’s umbrella.

The Wetumpka Chamber of Commerce held its annual luncheon to install new officers and board members for the first time in a while Thursday.

“It’s being hosted by Change Champions,” Knight said. “It’s a young professionals group.

The COVID-19 pandemic put a hamper on gath erings but the chamber celebrated the successes of business in Wetumpka.

It’s their first event.”

Walking around with an adult beverage in the downtown Wetumpka entertainment district could get a little easier.

The Wetumpka City Council is considering changing the hours of the district created by the council a year ago. City attorney Justin Edwards said the proposed change would allow someone to walk in the district from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday with a beverage from a downtown store in an approved cup.

WOMEN’S CONFERENCE ‘BREAKS THE MOLD’

The Wetumpka Chamber of Commerce reIMAGINE Women’s Summit did what it was supposed to do — inspire women.

More importantly, inspire women to break the mold. Chamber Executive Director Shellie Whitfield hoped the summit would show attendees, especially women, they are not stuck in stereotypes.

Police were dispatched to the parking lot around 10:45 p.m. for a “shots fired” call.

Once there, they found Centell Winston, 42 of Tallassee, dead of a gunshot wound in the driver seat of his vehicle.

According to Wetumpka police chief Greg Benton, this was not a random shooting.

“This was not random, not a random act,” said Benton. “We believe the victim and the perpetrator knew each other.”

This is the first homicide in Wetumpka in over three years. The last homicide in

The decibel level story

Those of us who served a long time in the legislature have a lot of stories. I served 16 years from 1982 to 1998 from my home county of Pike. I chose not to run again in 1998. However, I missed the comradery and friendships of other legislators who became lifelong friends.

It was apparent that those of us who hailed from smaller towns and rural counties knew our constituents better and were better known by our constituents than those from urban areas.

Our name identification was exponentially higher than our big city colleagues for obvious reasons. Our folks usually knew us. They knew everything about us. They knew when you went to work, when you walked, when and where you ate and what ballgame you attended. In essence, they knew how to find you. It was a full-time job for a small town legislator. The big city boys could simply come to Montgomery and vote and go home to anonymity. We small town legislators were expected to go to every fish fry, barbeque, dinner on the grounds, preacher’s anniversary, homecoming and ballgame in our county.

My availability was exacerbated by the fact that my mama’s and daddy’s families had been residents of my county for a long time. Many of my constituents had watched me grow up and a good many were kin to me.

When I got elected at age 30, my phone started ringing and it never stopped the entire 16 years. I still get constituent calls today after being out of office 20

years. We had no resident congressman, so I got all of his calls. If a pressing matter was being discussed on the national scene, people called me because they did not distinguish a difference between a state legislator or a national legislator. In fact, they would see me on the street and ask me why I was not in Washington. Most of the congressional calls I got, however, were for lost Social Security checks. In fact, most of the calls I got were not related to my job as a state legislator. There were calls that pertained to why someone’s garbage had not been picked up, a neighbor’s dog was barking all night, a road needed paving, roadside litter was not being picked up or state workers are lazy and do not work. In my first few years, a trend set in that was especially irritating – some folks thought that since you were a state politician you could get them out of jail.

As you know, Saturday night is a honkytonking, drinking night. Every drunk that got put in jail for drunken behavior would invariably call my house and ask me to get him out. I finally refused to answer the phone on Saturday night after 8 p.m. Years later, I was so glad to vote for the legislation that

mandated that every drunk driver had to stay in jail for 24 hours.

However, prior to that decision, I got an interesting call one Saturday night around 7:00 p.m. It was from a gentleman my parents’ age who was from a large family in the northern part of my county. I could tell he was in a bar because I could hear music in the background. I thought here we go; he’s wanting to get either bailed out or his garbage had not been picked up on time. He began slowly, he was wasn’t quite drunk, but he was on his way because he was slurring his words. He began, “You know Steve, I’ve known you all your life and we all voted for you up here, and I’ve known your mama and daddy all my life, we all went to school together….well Steve, I’m out here at the Holiday Inn bar trying to have a quiet drink and all these young people out here are playing this music too loud…..when you get back to Montgomery will you please pass a bill requiring bars to lower the decibel level for music in certain establishments?”

Bless his heart, at least he was asking me for something that pertained to my job.

See you next week.

The sacred and the profane

It is difficult to imagine the popular music continuum without a persistent push of the envelope. It’s been happening since the beginning of time, really – the Tree of Knowledge was there in the Garden, God said leave it alone, Adam and Eve didn’t, and here we are.

Over the past century, popular music has evolved from one buttonpushing genre to another: ragtime to jazz, rock ‘n’ roll to punk, rap to hiphop, and so on. All these styles went against the accepted music of their time, and eventually became part of the musical fabric of our culture.

The content was critiqued less than the genres themselves – blues and jazz, for example, were thought to lead to dancing (they did). Rock ‘n’ roll was said to bring out animalistic tendencies (that also happened). Generally, these changes were innocuous, and so were the things that might have been considered shocking at the time.

Plato, the Greek philosopher, wrote: “Forms and rhythms in music are never altered without producing changes in the entire fabric of society.”

An interesting point to ponder. In the 1920s, jazz music became popular, and was called a lot of names – yes, it came from places where people were drinking and dancing, but so did country music around that same time. And songwriters mastered the art of speaking directly to their subject while, well, speaking indirectly in that they used euphemism and double entendre to say what they were trying to get across.

Then, rock ‘n’ roll was born in the 1950s, the term itself African American slang for sexual intercourse. As the genre grew in popularity, it was called tribalistic, cannibalistic, evil, and everything else. Elvis Presley’s performance on the top-rated television show of the era, The Ed Sullivan Show, featured creative camerawork to avoid showing his gyrating bottom half, while Pat Boone re-recorded the wilder hits of Little Richard to get played on white radio stations.

Moving through the decades, nearly every new type of music that has come along has been called the devil at one time or another – sometimes, deservedly. Generally speaking, however, the capacity to shock has been one constant on the cultural continuum for as long as there has been a popular culture.

I caught some of the VMA’s last week – the Video Music Awards show on MTV. Rather than finding excitement in the proceedings, they just seemed dark and depressing.

MTV hasn’t played a role in the music industry for nearly two decades, so many of today’s A-listers skip the proceedings. That leaves room for the performers who do show up to attempt to shake their tail, be as profane and out-there as possible, and make enough noise that social media will buzz about them the next day.

Sure, there was the force of nature known as Lizzo out there performing her heart out, and stoners Cheech & Chong as award presenters. The Red Hot Chili Peppers were honored, and Taylor Swift announced she had a new record coming out. But the evening’s Video Vanguard award was presented to Nicki Minaj, who unfortunately hasn’t ever made a good video.

That leads me to my next point, which is that while popular culture has always had to fight off the label of being demonic even when they weren’t, these days the way these tastemakers are trying to gain attention is by being demonic for real!

Nicki Minaj spent a large portion of the Grammys a few years ago as a possessed character named Roman, who was escorted to the festivities by someone impersonating the Pope. There was a giant exorcism on stage, complete with plenty of pyrotechnics. Katy Perry, the former contemporary Christian artist and current American Idol judge, also performed some kind of witchcraft ritual in which she was burned at the stake during her performance.

I remember rolling my eyes at the attempts to shock. “Whatever,” I thought.

And then, Lil Nas X ruined all the goodwill he had earned for himself by being the first black hip-hop artist to have a country number-one hit a couple of years ago. He decided to double down on the demonic imagery in a video and even sold repurposed

Nike shoes to include 666 and drops of blood.

Demi Lovato is the latest to, if not go all-in on devil stuff, to remake her image around shocking religious imagery. The child star of “Barney and Friends” and the Camp Rock franchise has been putting some rough edges on her smooth image for a while now – normal behavior for pop princesses going back to Britney Spears and beyond. In fact, Demi’s move toward rock out of the Disneyfied entertainment empire from whence she came has actually been a welcome development.

But Demi has added the religious component. Her new album is called “Holy F**k,” and the cover features Demi in bondage gear on a crossshaped bed. Provocative!

How about Danny DeVito’s new animated sitcom, “Little Demon”? This one definitely ain’t for the kids – it’s in the vein of “South Park” and other adult cartoons – but it seems to play the demonic bit for laughs as Satan’s illegitimate daughter copes with life as a teenager . . . and being the Antichrist.

I suppose the fact that people even notice that God or the Devil exists should be a winning point. It wasn’t so long ago that there would have been perhaps a little bit of commentary over the content of some of the TV shows and records being produced today, but our culture has been splintered into a gazillion pieces by streaming and downloading, so there’s no way to track much of anything – thus, performers have to be more and more outrageous to get attention.

Back to cussing. A recent survey of profanity in popular music has shown that yes, there are way more swear words in songs today than there ever have been. Like, unnecessarily placed swear words. The winners are:

Gwen Stefani, “Hollaback Girl” –38 uses of the word “s**t”

Fatboy Slim, “F***ing in Heaven” – 120 uses of the word “f**k”

Lil Jon, “Real N***az Roll Call” –295 cuss words

So, it’s always been there: the need to sell records or TV shows; the need to get attention; the desire to become famous by selling one’s body and soul to the entertainment complex. Fine, do what you want. But you didn’t have to drag us all with you.

California are leading to increases in areas supplied by the state’s refineries, including areas of Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and of course, California. Gasoline supply remains tight for the East Coast with some modest moves up, while prices continue to edge lower in the Plains, South and areas of the Great Lakes. For now, I believe the drop in prices will overpower the increases, leading to potentially another decline this week, but we’re in a very fragile time and certainly could see a broader move higher in the weeks ahead.”

Some Blue Cross members affected by cyberattack

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama (BCBSAL) learned on July 8 one of its vendor partners, North Highland Company, LLC, suffered a significant cyberattack on their information technology systems. The incident resulted in the potential compromise of personal information of some current and former members of BCBSAL’s Medicare Advantage plan, “Blue Advantage.”

North Highland first became aware of the

cyberattack on June 6 and quickly took steps to secure their systems and engage third-party forensic response experts to assist in their remediation efforts and prevent future incidents.

North Highland’s investigation into the matter determined the compromised personal information may have included demographic details (name, age and gender), as well as city, zip code and email addresses, for up to 8,700 of Blue Cross’ current and former Blue Advantage members.

Winners featured on the cover and inside pages of our October magazine edition. Submissions accepted in acrylics, oil, watercolor, pastels, pencil & photography. (Up to three works of art per artist accepted)

Entries must reflect life and scenes in Tallapoosa County or the Lake Martin area.

All entries must be framed, matted or mounted on boards and ready to hang.

A panel of local artists will judge the entries. There is no fee to enter, and no prizes or monetary awards will be made. This year’s contest is just for fun!

Clearly mark each entry with the artist’s name, address and telephone number and deliver entries to the office of Lake Martin Living magazine on or before 5 p.m. September 23.

The office is located at 548 Cherokee Road, Alexander City, across from Benjamin Russell High School.

Please call magazine editor-in-chief Betsy Iler at 256-234-4282 with questions or email editor@lakemartinmagazine.com.

In a press release from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, the company stated that North Highland has determined “no credit card information, no banking information or Social Security numbers were compromised.” Additionally, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama stated they had “obtained assurance from North Highland that Blue Cross member data is no longer present in their active system environment.”

“Blue Cross is notifying in writing its current and former Blue Advantage members who may have been impacted by this incident and is

offering them one year of free credit monitoring and identity theft restoration services,” the statement said.

Blue Cross also encourages anyone affected by this incident to contact Blue Advantage Customer Service at 888-234-8266 with any questions or concerns.

friday night lights

Friday Night Lights is a term used to describe the events at Friday evening football games, usually held at the high school level. Football games are not only school sports events but are a place where many communities around the United States gather. They are there to support the student athletes, watch the game, listen to the school band perform, and cheer with the cheering squad. There are often fundraisers held at football games benefitting the school. The concession stands sell food and beverages to the crowd. Football is a game where two teams of 11 players try to move the ball by running or passing across the other team’s goal. This is called a touchdown. Scoring can also occur when the ball is kicked through the goalposts which is called a field goal. Each team has four chances, called downs, to get the ball over the other team’s goal line, while trying to keep the defending team from taking the ball away. To assure that all of the rules of play are followed, line judges and referees govern the game. Cheerleading is a team sport where members of a squad perform choreographed cheers,

dances, and routines, while rallying the crowds at football games. Today, cheering is a coed sport, but when it was first introduced in the late 1800’s, it was an all-male sport. The Marching Band is a team of musicians who perform together. They perform the halftime show which is a choreographed routine with music and movement on the field. They support the team in the stands with fight songs, perform the National Anthem, and sometimes play music to accompany the cheerleaders’ routines. They may also play the school song, called the Alma Mater, at the end of games. The leader of the band is called the Drum Major. Other performers, called the Color Guard, often join the band. They do a dance routine within the show performing with flags and other props. For a great time, find out where your local schools are playing and enjoy an evening of Friday Night Lights!

Is holiness your destiny?

As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

- 1 Peter 1:14-16

Your destiny in God’s purpose is not happiness (although serving God is the best way to know and enjoy real, enduring happiness, or joy). Your destiny in God’s purpose is not health (though living a godly life contributes so much to better physical and emotional health). Your destiny in God’s purpose is to be holy as he is holy.

We are called to a standard of holiness that is above and beyond the holiness of the best person you know. No other human being is the basis for comparing or evaluating

our own holiness. The finest example of godly holiness that you know may inspire and motivate you to be more dedicated to the pursuit of holiness. That’s good. But it may be a frustrating thing to compare what we know about our own failures and weaknesses to what we see in others. The comparison will probably provoke one to either pride at how well we compare or despair at how poorly we measure up to the person we admire. I imagine that is why Paul said, “Not that we dare to clarify or compare ourselves with some

of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding” (2 Corinthians 10:12).

Everyone (as far as I know) has conflicting desires and interests in life. Some of those desires and interests are not bad in themselves and may be enjoyed and fulfilled. But they cannot all be the most important thing. To a Christian, what matters most is whether or not you will surrender yourself to the holiness God purposes to create in your life.

Do you believe that you can be holy? God says you can be. Do you resent preaching and teaching that makes you confront unholiness in your life? Do you realize that the same preaching

should stir a yearning in you for holiness?

The point of the cross was not to give us access to a blessing-ondemand service. It was to remove the distance and enmity between sinners like you and me and a holy God. Paul wrote, “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:20-21).

We each should understand and tell ourselves, “Holiness requires a sincere devotion to the pursuit of purity in my walk before God. Holiness should capture and control the words from my mouth, the thoughts in my mind and the desires of my heart.” Biblical

holiness is not some mystical, ethereal state of being. It is devotion and submission to God that shows up in my life.

Genuine holiness does not object to every detail of life being under the close scrutiny of an allseeing God without shame. Do not tolerate conduct in yourself or others that is not in harmony with the holiness of God in your life. “Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you,” (2 Corinthians 6:17).

Your objective in life directs your actions in life. When holiness is our objective, our way of life will reflect it. Sadly, if we lack holiness in our hearts, it will also show up in our lives. May God grant you and me the grace to be holy as he is holy.

Stanhope Elmore’s Woodham commits to Jacksonville State baseball

Stanhope Elmore pitcher Colin Woodham has been dominating the high school level for years, and now the southpaw will get the chance to do so at the college level.

Woodham, a senior, has committed to play college baseball at Jacksonville State.

While pitching in a summer league game at the University of Montevallo, Jacksonville State assistant coach Mike Murphree was watching Woodham. Woodham ended up pitching a solid four innings of work, and Murphree reached out.

After a few weeks of backand-forth talking, JSU head coach Jim Case reached out and extended an offer in the middle of July. A few weeks later, Woodham committed.

“It really was a bunch of things that led me to picking JSU,” Woodham said. “Just the way the coaches interacted with each other and the other players and with me, it seemed like they had a great time being there. I really liked them and the facilities are top notch and really nice. The campus itself was really nice and just walking around it made me feel like I was at home. I really didn’t

want to leave there.”

Woodham isn’t a pitcher who is going to step on the mound and overpower hitters, and he knows that. He works to his strengths, which are commanding every pitch for a strike and having extreme movement on his pitches.

He pitches to contact, and his off speed pitches can make batter after batter roll over or pop out to the infield. His fastball is stellar as well, though, sitting between 81 and 84 mph while it has some very strong movement to keep batters on their toes.

He’s shown all of that and more at the high school level as he’s been one of the Mustangs’ top pitchers since he was in eighth grade.

As a junior in the spring of 2022, Woodham finished therewith a 1.65 earned run average with 91 strikeouts and only 16 walks in 68 innings. Opposing hitters had a .180 batting average against him.

“I think I can go out there and get outs,” Woodham said of what he can bring to JSU. “I know i’m not going to overpower anybody with my velocity, but I can come out there and throw strikes. I definitely think I’m going to give the team a chance to win when I’m on the mound.”

The Gamecocks have had over a .500 record in conference play in each of the last two seasons, and they’ve had success against top-notch programs in non-conference games.

Just last season, the Gamecocks faced Kentucky, Alabama, Auburn, and Southern Miss. They even beat Auburn in a mid-week game.

Just three years ago, the Gamecocks beat both Auburn and Georgia en route to an NCAA Tournament appearance and a 39-win season. The Gamecocks lost to Ole Miss in the regional round that season.

Playing premier programs was a huge selling point for Woodham when he made his commitment decision.

“I know that we’re going to play a lot of good competition,” Woodham said of JSU. “I know they play Auburn, Alabama and Kentucky. They’ll be playing Ole Miss and Mississippi State. So as a player, I want to play the best. To go in there and compete against the best is going to be really fun and it will get me seen by scouts. So that will be cool.

As well as defending passes, Caffee stepped up and made five tackles in the matchup as well. He stopped receivers from getting to the end zone and helped contain Russell County’s Drew Pickett from breaking off multiple big runs.

Stanhope Elmore did not play in Week 4, as they had their bye week. The Mustangs now turn their attention back to region play as they travel to Montgomery Carver on Friday, Sept. 16. Carver is currently undefeated at 3-0 with a 2-0 record in region play.

HOLTVILLE’S ADKINS HAVING BREAKOUT JUNIOR SEASON

out season for the Bulldogs.

Through four games of the 2022 football season, Adkins has already more than doubled his production from

sophomore season.

The Bulldogs’ leading receiver has recorded 16 catches for 218 yards and four touchdowns this year, with his longest catching coming at 41 yards.

He’s been the team’s biggest threat at receiver, and that’s a big change from a sophomore season where he only had eight catches and two touchdowns in 11 games.

“He’s running great routes and he’s running his routes full speed,” Holtville coach Jason Franklin said of Adkins. “He’s learned the offense and that was the thing he struggled with last year. He’s been counted on to learn and know what he’s supposed to do, and he took responsibility this offseason to do that. Erik took it wholeheartedly to take time to learn the offense and get quality reps all summer.”

Adkins’ strength is his speed, and he can run past nearly anybody in the state and certainly most in the area. That was what he would do during his sophomore season to try and get open, but learning the playbook has helped him utilize his speed as team’s target him.

He used to just try to run past defensive backs, but that isn’t the case this year. Defensive backs are playing off of him, not allowing him to race past them quickly off the line of scrimmage.

So now he’s having to adjust what he does. He says when he gets to the center point of his route and gets ready to break, he will sometimes stutter or try and throw the defensive back off and try to get him to pause.

For Adkins’ speed, any split second of pause can be the difference in a touchdown.

“I’m getting open a lot more this year than I did last year,” Adkins said. “I’m more confident on the field and I feel like that’s one of the biggest reasons why. I also have my speed, but a lot of guys have been playing off of me so I have to add a few things and improve my routes to keep getting open.”

Most receivers have the simplicity of just working with one single starting quarterback and they can learn the timing and how the quarterback throws the ball.

But Adkins is putting up the numbers he is putting up with Holtville using two quarterbacks behind center. The Bulldogs are using senior Tanner Potts and sophomore Keiland Baker, and both have played significant minutes this year.

Potts has completed 28 of his 43 pass attempts for 371 yards and one touchdown, while Baker has completed 7 of 12 passes for 88 yards and three touchdowns.

Adkins doesn’t feel like there’s any timing issues with either of them, and he feels completely on the same page with both, no matter which is in the game.

Franklin agrees, as he sees the timing work with both quarterbacks. That comes from the receivers catching passes and running routes with the quarterbacks for nearly two hours every practice.

“Our receivers get so many passes from each quarterback every day that they know how each one throws it and they know where the ball is going to be when they run their routes,” Franklin said. “They don’t have to worry about that.”

The Wetumpka Depot Players production of the stage adaptation of author Lee Smith’s novel, Fair and Tender Ladies , opens September 22 and runs through October 8 at the Wetumpka Depot Players Theatre on 300 South Main Street in historic Wetumpka.

and Karren Pell.

“I was privileged to see this production at ASF years ago and have been looking for the right time to bring it to our stage,” said Wetumpka Depot artistic director, Kristy Meanor. “I knew I was putting it in the right hands with director Kim Mason as director. We were overjoyed to have Karren Pell, who helped developed the music at ASF, collaborate with us as well. The results are magical and this company finds every nuance in this script and music.”

The play is directed by Wetumpka Depot veteran Kim Mason.

“I have fallen in love with this music. It has become a part of me. The lyrics and the way the feel of the book is captured in each song just casts a spell over me,” said Mason. “I can’t tell you how much I love this show.”

Audiences will meet Ivy Rowe, a scrappy Virginia woman who yearns to know more about the world beyond her home on Blue Star Mountain. Her journey from childhood to old age is shared through inventive storytelling and Appalachian music that captures her fascinating life.

Congratulations

Two special events are planned around the three-week run. On Friday, September 23, Karren Pell and some of the original collaborators will play pre-show for audiences in the lobby starting at 6:30 p.m. On Sunday, October 2, a post show Talk Back with ASF’s Greta Lambert (original 1998 company member) and Wetumpka Depot cast member Adrian Lee Bush is planned to share about their shared experiences developing the character of Ivy Rowe.

Tickets may be purchased at WetumpkaDepot.com or at the door for $15.
