But where gas prices didn’t jump because of refinery issues, they will rise a total of 10-30 cents due to oil’s rise, and some areas are certainly seeing the jump already. For now, I don’t expect much improvement in prices for most of the country, with California and the Great Lakes as the exception, with downdrafts likely in the days and weeks ahead.”

The death of the pro-life movement
Even before the damaging revelations for a prominent political figure in Georgia became public, the concept of being “pro-life” in politics in America was on life-support. Now for American politics, and a wide swath of voters, what it means to be “pro-life” has functionally ceased to exist.
During the Newt Gingrich era “Contract with America,” I asked a Republican congressional candidate from Wisconsin what he would do if he only had one law that he could get through the House of Representatives. “I’d pass a ‘Human Life Amendment’ which would protect life from cradle to grave,” he told me. “So, you oppose the death penalty and want to demobilize our military?” I asked him. He became very uncomfortable, trying to explain how capital punishment and combat didn’t count in his concept of Human Life.
For years, we had a pro-life disconnect between Democrats and Republicans. Each would be pro-life….at least on some issue. Republicans, like this Wisconsin politician attacked abortion and euthanasia. Democrats had a beef with executing someone and were more likely to be antiwar.
Perhaps both sides could lean a little more toward criticizing their foes on the issues, instead of advancing a positive agenda.
JOHN TURES ColumnistMany Republicans would be more likely to blast Democrats for being pro-abortion, instead of developing a strong system backing adoption or kids born into poverty. And Democrats back then were more likely to criticize warmongering instead of crafting a competent alternative that could stand against our foes and save human rights victims.
In other to show toughness, some Democrats began to support capital punishment as a means of competing with Republicans. They could even become more pro-military than the GOP at times. It won them the votes, but in the process, they lost some of that commitment to life.
And plenty of conservatives were quick to say that only old people were dying from the coronavirus, so it wasn’t that bad. Or they shared memes and antivax conspiracies that worsened the COVID-19 pandemic without a shred of empathy for the victims, old and young.
Now we’ve learned all we need to in the past week about where the importance of life is in the GOP structure.
There’s been the “fake news” reflex which is trotted out by some on every occasion for bad publicity for the right. But for many, there’s a recognition that there’s a good chance that this evidence can be substantiated. That’s why this week, some conservatives are saying “So what if he paid an abortion…or abortions?”
That’s right. When you’ve sunk a substantial amount of election spending into a contentious campaign where the stakes could involve control of the U.S. Senate (and more for the party coffers if you win), who cares about paying for an abortion? Nobody on the right is calling for him to step aside, on principle if not for the good of the party. Instead, they would like to reward this person whose actions would be criminalized by nearly every red state (and maybe his own policies) with one of the most powerful political positions in America. If you want an abortion, just run for the U.S. Senate! And that’s how the prolife movement died.

National trends do not affect Alabama
As mentioned last week, all polling points to a significant Republican pickup of congressional seats in the upcoming November General Election. It is a historical fact that the party that loses the White House in a presidential year, picks up congressional seats in the following midterm elections. Furthermore, Democrats are in disfavor because of runaway inflation. Voters blame Biden and the Democratic Congress for the inflated price of gas, groceries and everything else. Americans vote their pocketbook. It’s the economy that counts, is what they say.
We, however, in Alabama will vote party no matter what is going on in the economy. Over 60 percent of Alabamians will vote Republican. Although, the libertarian party fielding a slate of state candidates may skew these numbers.
We have six Republican congressional seats, all white men and one Democratic congressional seat held by an African American woman. It would not matter if the inflation rate was 30 percent and a Republican was in the White House, we would still elect six Republican congressmen and one Democratic congressperson.
We do not fit into national politics. We are automatically placed in the Republican column for presidential elections, regardless of the Democratic or Republican nominees. We are colored red way before the election night numbers are counted. Both of our U.S. Senate seats are held by Republicans. When Katie Britt won the Republican Primary in June, the race was over. This race will be on the ballot next month. However, Katie Britt will win. Winning the Republican Primary in the Heart of Dixie is tantamount to election.
The same was true for the
STEVE FLOWERS ColumnistDemocratic Party in Alabama six decades ago. Folks, when we change, we change. We do not do things halfway. Sixty years ago, every statewide official was a Democrat. Every state judge was a Democrat. Our entire congressional delegation was Democratic. Today, not only is our congressional delegation 6-to-1 Republican, our legislature, both Senate and House, is 75 percent Republican. Every statewide elected official in Alabama is a Republican. The Republican control of Alabama politics today is so dominating that we could safely be called a oneparty state, again, when it comes to statewide politics.
A prevailing theme has continued in Alabama for over a century, and it is still pronounced today. Our state is divided politically based on race. Over 84 percent of whites vote Republican and almost all, 96 percent of Black voters, vote Democratic. It is that simple, most parts of the country vote based on pocketbook issues, but Alabama and the Deep South vote on race and religion. Therefore, the national congressional numbers in the U.S. House may change to Republican, but we are Republican regardless.
Our legislature will not change our congressional makeup of Alabama’s delegation from 6-to-1 Republican. However, that does not mean that the Federal Courts will not.
African American Democratic lawmakers filed suit in federal court in the Northern District of Alabama late last year asking the court to change the lines to create a second
Black majority congressional district. They argued that the current six Republican seats to one Democratic seat majority, which has been in effect since 1992, blatantly violates their Constitutional rights under the 1965 Voting Rights Act. If you put a percentage of the Black citizens, who as we have said vote straight Democratic, into having one African American Democratic Congressman, that gives Black voters 13 percent of the representation. The Black population of Alabama is 27 percent. The argument that there should be two majority minority districts has some merit.
A three judge federal panel made up of two Republicans appointed jurists and one Democratic appointee agreed with the plaintiffs and ruled in their favor. They ordered the state legislature to go back to the drawing board and map out a second African American Democratic district.
The Supreme Court intervened on January 24 and stayed the lower court’s decision. However, the stay was granted not on the merits of the case, but because it was too close to Alabama’s election, which had already begun. Supreme Court Justice, Brett Kavanaugh, wrote that the high courts have set precedents that federal courts should not disrupt state election procedures close to the time of an election.
We have not seen the last of this issue. We could see our congressional line-up change to five Republicans and two Democrats in the 2024 election.
We will see.

Autumn In The Garden
Did you know that Autumn is a great time to plant certain types of plants in your garden? The hot summer months may be over, but the ground beneath still retains warmth from the hot weather. It will take time for the ground to cool, or possibly even freeze. Planting items in the autumn months allows plants time to grow and establish a root system before it becomes too cold. Then, when the ground begins to warm again in the Spring, flowers and plants will appear to come to life even faster than if they were planted that day! Annuals are plants that last one season, while perennials may last many seasons and come back year after year. Many people plant perennial bulbs in the Fall. A bulb is a type of plant that lives underground and is seen when their flowers and leaves grow through the surface of the ground. Daffodils are a great example of bulbs that are planted in the Fall and come up in the Spring. Bulbs are usually round and about the size of a tennis ball. Onions are another cold weather bulb that likes cooler weather. Other types of plants like to be planted in the Fall because they prefer cooler weather, such Chrysanthemums (better known as mums). Dahlias, Fuchsia, Sunflowers, and Asters are goof flowers for Fall. Many types of trees, grasses, and shrubs prefer to be planted in cooler months, as well. Foods such as broccoli, cabbage, kale, carrots, and onions are all good for Fall planting and growing. What will you plant in your garden this Autumn?

By DALTON MIDDLETON Sports EditorThe Stanhope Elmore volleyball team is hoping to make the playoffs for the sixth straight season on Thursday.
Stanhope Elmore, which is the No. 2 seed in the AHSAA Class 6A, Region 3 volleyball tournament, plays No. 3 seed Carver Montgomery on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in the semifinals of the area tournament.
The winner of the game advances to the playoffs, while the loser will be eliminated.
“We’re going to have to be consistent,” Stanhope Elmore coach Flavia Freeney said. “The last few times we’ve played Carver, we’ve stayed up but then for some reason our energy goes down and we drop a set or two. This time, we dropped two sets to them. Carver is one of these teams that start slow and build up, and once they warm up, they’re on.”
Stanhope Elmore beat Carver in both gamest that the two teams played this year. In the first matchup, Stanhope won 3-1, but the Lady Mustangs let Carver stick around in the last matchup

Herald Fans’ Choice Player of the Week: Gavan Baxley
By DALTON MIDDLETON Sports EditorThe votes are in, and this week’s Herald Fans’ Choice Player of the Week is Wetumpka cross county runner Gavan Baxley.
Baxley, a senior, earned 423 of the 723 votes, earning nearly 60 percent of the total vote. He beat out fellow classmate Dorion Jackson, a safety for the Wetumpka team, and Holtville running back Shawn Brackett in the vote.
Jackson earned 166 votes after his big performance against Stanhope Elmore while Brackett earned 134 votes after his 220yard performance against Jemison.
Baxley raced his best in the team’s biggest cross country race of the season. In the Jesse Owens Classic in Cullman, Baxley set a new personal record as he recorded the best time on the team.
He finished the 5k race with a total time of 16:42.05, and he was one of only two Wetumpka runners to record a sub-17 time.
Baxley has seen his time get better and better this season. On Sept. 11, he finished first on the team in the Chickasaw Trails Invite race with a time of 17:05.76.
Two weeks ago, he finished the 2022 Southern Showcase with a time of 17:01.41. He has steadily improved over the course of the cross county season.
Griffin shines as Tallassee wins back-to-back games
By DALTON MIDDLETON Sports EditorThe Tallassee football team has gotten back on track with two straight wins, and a lot of that success has to do with the emergence of running back Josh Griffin.
Tallassee, after losing four of its five games in the month of September, has beaten region opponents Elmore County, 26-20, and beaten Valley, 25-7, in the last two weeks.
In those two wins, Griffin has put on a show. He has rushed 34 total times for a combined 358 yards and five touchdowns.
He rushed 14 times for 140 yards and two touchdowns against Elmore County, then a career-high 20 times for 218 yards and three touchdowns in the win
over Valley on Friday night.
“Josh has always been a good running back, and we have multiple guys who can run the football,” Tallassee coach Mike Battles said. “We’ve started blocking and doing the little things right. Josh has had some great games and he’s running the ball really hard. Even the runs where he hasn’t scored, he’s running hard. And he’s getting a lot of yards after contact.”
Tallassee is a run-first football team, and the Tigers feature multiple guys in the backfield every game. Quarterbacks Tyler Ellis and Cade Everson are both run-first quarterbacks, and the running back room features Griffin, DJ Leonard and James Bender as the primary running backs.
With five guys splitting carries, it’s tough for one person to stand out without long runs. That was seen in Tallassee’s first six games with Griffin.
In Tallassee’s first six games, Griffin only recorded 30 carries for 124 yards and one touchdown. His lone touchdown came against Reeltown in the opener, and his most yards (33) came against Chilton County.
He’s rushed for more yards and touchdowns in each of the last two games than he had in the previous six games combined.
“He’s a quality back and he’s very strong,” Battles said. “He made some runs against Valley where he got hit two yards behind the line of scrimmage and broke tackles and did a tremendous job of extending the play. He runs really hard. When he’s committed, he’s not trying to run around you. He’s going to run over you.”
With Griffin extending plays and rushing for career highs, Tallassee’s offense has also put up two of the best performances they’ve had all season.
The Tigers scored 26 and 25 points the last two weeks, which are the only two times they’ve scored over 21 points outside of the Reeltown game in the season opener.
During the five games from Aug. 26 to Sept. 23, Tallassee averaged only 14.8 points per game. During those Ellis or Everson was the leading rusher the majority of the time. With another running back taking on some of the load and gaining yards and touchdowns, the Tallasee offense is much better.
“It’s huge for our offense,” Battles said. “When we go out there and with some of our sets, we have three guys who can all tote the ball. They can all get the job done. It’s hard to key on one of them and look at one guy who is going to run the ball. Anytime you can be multiple, it gives all of them a better opportunity to have some success.”
EDGEWOOD
Continued from B1
have since won two of their last four games.
Hooper has allowed the most points in the region, allowing nearly 39 points per game this year. The Colts have only played one game where they allowed less than 35 points, and they’ve given up 45 points or more twice this season.
But while the defense has given up a plethora of points, the offense has put up points in a hurry in a few games and they’re averaging 30 points per game.
They’ve had two of their top three scoring outputs in the last two weeks.
“When you watch them throughout the season, they’ve gotten better every week,” Michael said of Hooper.
Battles doesn’t care which player is racking up the yards or touchdowns, as he’s just happy that his team didn’t quit when they could’ve. His Tigers were sitting at 2-4 with an 0-2 record in region play just two weeks ago.
But his team continued to play hard, and they cleaned up some of the penalties and turnovers that plagued the team during the four-game losing streak.
Now with the two wins, Tallassee is sitting at third in the region with a 2-2 record and have already clinched a playoff spot. They have one game left, against last place Sylacauga (0-8, 0-4) on Friday night.
With a win, Tallassee will wrap up the third seed in the region.
“It’s been really fun to see this team evolve and get to where I thought this team would be,” Battles said. “The thing I’m most proud of is that nobody gave up. You lose four in a row, and a lot of kids would fold up shop. Our kids haven’t. They’re still playing football and now they’ve put themselves in a position to play in the playoffs.”
“They’ve played a really tough schedule. They have three really good backs. They have a really good offensive tackle and they run behind him a lot. On defense, they’re very aggressive and make you get the ball out of your hands quick. We have to be prepared for that.”
When Hooper’s offense is rolling, it’s really rolling. In their two wins athis season, the Colts have put up 68 points and 72 points. The two games account for 140 of their 210 points scored this season.
All three of their top playmakers on offense each rushed for over 100 yards last week as they beat Sparta Academy, 72-50.
Edgewood’s defense has played well at times this year as they’ve allowed 200 total points in seven games, but the run defense has been especially spotty at times.
In three of their four losses, Edgewood has given up over 300 yards of rushing to opposing teams. In the win against Macon East last week, Edgewood gave up 214 rushing yards.
Edgewood’s defense has its work cut out for it, and the Wildcats will have to keep the Colts rushing attack in check if they want to play a playoff game at home.
“I don’t care who you’re playing against, if you score that many points in a game you’re moving the football,” Michael said. “Those three backs can all break loose at any time. Any run can go for a touchdown. They have one guy who is really physical but he can also break it 80 yards at any time. They have a good combination of speed and power, and they’re all going to get their touches.”

Istruggled with a car purchase three years ago wondering what my dad would’ve said. He was a steel worker, and his company was keen on buying American.
So, I’ve always done so, until then. I did careful research and purchased a “foreign” car.
MICHAEL BROOKS ColumnistWe had a pastor when I was growing up who drove a foreign car. Someone reminded him half the men in his church worked at the

nearby steel plant. He never saw this as an issue; instead, he got angry.
“When they start making American as good as this, I’ll buy American,” he shouted.
Though I was a teen-ager, I knew he was wrong. The American steel industry was beginning to suffer and steel workers were worried.
I thought it was important for him, at the time, to show solidarity with the men in his church. “I become all things to all men,” the apostle Paul wrote. I saw the same anxiety in east Alabama when we lived there. The textile mills are now gone. As Ross Perot famously said, there was a “giant sucking sound.”
But things are a bit

different currently. The “foreign” car I drive was made in Kentucky. It’s hard now to know where supplies originate since we’re in a global economy.
And we’re in a global population, too.
Another boyhood memory I have is of a Mexican family in our neighborhood. This was unusual, but not now. The Hispanic population is our largest American minority. We had a death in our neighborhood lately and I learned that the family down the street was from Kenya. The USA is, indeed, a mirror of the world.
I’ve heard preachers say because America failed to evangelize the world, God

has brought the world to us. I’m not sure this is the case. Many minorities are bringing the gospel to us. My denomination has seen a surge in African American and Hispanic congregations, and we can learn from their zeal.
Of course, my generation remembers the shameful legacy of racial discrimination. A Baptist preacher challenged us to be better. He said we shouldn’t judge others on the color of their ski n, but on the content of their character.

In so many ways we’re a better country today. But we must continue the quest for understanding. As King said, we must “sit down at the table of brotherhood,” and foster love, not hate.
