The Penguin Project returns to the Wetumpka Depot

The Penguins are back in Wetumpka.

After more than two years off the stage, The Penguin Project returns to the stage of the Wetumpka Depot Players with the cabaret ‘Don’t Stop Believing.’

Wetumpka Depot Players artistic director Kristy Meanor said the penguins are ecstatic to return to the stage.

“This is their first entry back into production since the pandemic shut us down,” Meanor said. “We are really excited they are back. They are ready to put together a whole evening of song and dance and just fabulous music.”

The last production the penguins performed for the public was ‘Annie.’ They were in rehearsals for ‘High School Musical’ more than two years ago when the COVID-19 pandemic halted everything.

“They have been over the moon to be back,” Meanor said. “They were so excited for ‘High School Musical’ when it got shot down. The last thing they really did was ‘Annie’ and they did a phenomenal job with that.”

To help ease the penguins back into the routine, Meanor said organizers just pulled

together something easy and fun before cranking things back up big time.

“What we decided to do when we came back from the pandemic, was we were going to do a little soft opening with the cabaret,” Meanor said. “They have been rehearsing songs from some of their favorite Broadway musicals. Then in January they will hit it hard again and start working on ‘High School Musical.’”

Meanor said The Penguin Project is the brainchild of a developmental pediatrician.

“He had a love of theater and a big population of special needs kids in his practice,” Meanor said. “He put together this penguin project program

occurred to the victim and who initially gave statements to investigators,” 19th Judicial Circuit Chief Deputy District Attorney C.J. Robinson said. “The state produced evidence that this material witness was intentionally subverting attempts by law enforcement to be served and whilst doing so was communicating with Shelton about the status of court proceedings. Shelton even secretly informed her daughter that a warrant had been issued to secure her daughter’s attendance as a witness.”

Prosecutors contend Shelton and her daughter were the only people present when Rosalie’s injuries occurred.

Authorities kept tabs on Shelton and the daughter by monitoring phone messages. Court documents detail how Shelton hid her daughter from law enforcement, paying rent for an apartment in Prattville and driving her halfway to Florida while trying to prevent her daughter from being served a summons to testify against her.

“Shelton’s daughter was located by law enforcement and was taken into custody,” Robinson said.

Judge Bill Lewis set the trial to resume immediately with the same jury empaneled 13 months earlier. Through her attorney Jennifer Holden, Shelton objected stating it was prejudicial and argued for the release from jail of Shelton’s daughter.

Rosalie’s mother Quneshia Rawls testified describing her toddler daughter being full of energy from the witness stand.

“She liked to dance around and sing into silverware,” Rawls said in 2019. “Her dad snores, so she would go around the house fake

to give special needs individuals an opportunity to take part in a theater experience because he knew it would help them grow self confidence and self esteem.”

Meanor said the penguin project is just as important to others involved in the project as the penguins.

“The concept is that the special needs artists are front and center,” Meanor said.

“They are the stars of the show and they are paired with a non-disabled peer mentor who helps them along the way if they need help with any kind of movement or remembering lines. The peer mentor and the special needs artist work together to create this

snoring. She was sassy too, quick to express her opinion. She was a happy child.”

Rosalie died in Birmingham at Children’s Hospital three days after what prosecutors described as a brutal attack on July 20, 2017.

The state called witnesses to explain the trauma caused to Rosalie would not come from an accident.

“The state elicited expert testimony detailing the extensive head injuries and abusive head trauma that could only be caused by ‘violently shaking and slamming the skull of this child against a hard surface’ resulting in her death,” Robinson said. “The long-time expert testified the fatal injuries came from force imposed on the victim’s head that was equivalent to a high-speed car wreck with the car flipping end-over-end and then being slammed onto a hard, ungiving surface.”

Shelton chose not to put on a defense.

Robinson thanked law enforcement and the victim’s family for their diligence and unwavering resolve to obtain justice.

“First of all, this case does not end this way without patience and a commitment to the process from Judge Lewis and the circuit clerk,” Robinson said. “The Wetumpka Police Department is to be commended for their dedication and hard work on this case as investigators worked tirelessly to uncover the truth. Evil is real. What Shelton did to this child was evil. I am proud of the Wetumpka Police Department and our prosecutors for never blinking an eye and staying focused in our search for truth and our pursuit of justice for Rosalie. She was a beautiful two-year-old girl who deserved to have us fight for her with all our being. I also thank the victim’s family for supporting us every step of the way. It is unfortunate the defendant showed no signs of remorse nor accepted any responsibility for her actions.”

performance.”

Meanor said the performance is important but what happens behind the curtains is where the real magic of the program occurs.

“What is really important is the relationships that are built during the rehearsals,” Meanor said. “It teaches empathy for the non-disabled peer mentor. It teaches them patience and tolerance for people who may have different needs than them. It’s truly a beautiful program and one we find so important.”

“Our liberty cannot be guarded but by the freedom of the press, nor that be limited without danger of losing it.”

Kay Ivey is governor again

Governor Kay Ivey’s 2022 reelection victory run has been very impressive. Some of you may be wondering how quickly I have been able to resolve that she has indeed culminated her victorious run when the General Election was held Tuesday and my column’s published date is Wednesday. It is simply as I have told you numerous times over the past two decades, winning the Republican Primary for governor in the Heart of Dixie is tantamount to election. The General Election in Alabama is an afterthought. We are a one-party state when it comes to statewide races.

Kay Ivey laid to rest the last hope of the Alabama Democrats being able to win a statewide race, especially for governor in my lifetime and probably in yours, when she beat Walt Maddox like a rented mule in 2018.

Walt Maddox was the best shot and best mule the Democrats could ever dream up. Maddox is the young, articulate mayor of Tuscaloosa. He has been and had been mayor of the Druid City for a good while. He has been an excellent mayor with an impeccable record. He ran a good well run, well financed campaign for governor. He got 40 percent of the vote. This seems to be the threshold for a Democrat for governor.

Therefore, Kay Ivey’s 2022 run may not be as impressive as her 2018 race. Although, this run has been extremely impressive. Probably the reason that 2022 has gone so well is because she ran so well in 2018. She beat a very formidable field four years ago. She beat the popular mayor of Huntsville, Tommy Battle, in the Republican Primary. His credentials and fundraising prowess were equal to Maddox’s, if not better.

Opinion?

Having beaten the 2018 thoroughbreds, Battle and Maddox, so thoroughly, made serious candidates not even consider challenging her. In 2022, to compare Lindy Blanchard, Tim James and Yolanda Flowers to Tommy Battle and Walt Maddox is like comparing Mutt to Jeff.

Governor Kay Ivey has done a good job as governor during the four years, 2019-2022, and folks knew that, and they knew her. There also have not been any scandals or controversy. She had garnered one of the finest men and managers in Alabama political history, Congressman Jo Bonner, to be her right arm and Chief of Staff. They together ran a pretty solid ship of state.

Most of us who follow Alabama politics felt like Kay was going to only serve one four-year term when she won the 2018 race. She, deep down, may have thought the same thing. Therefore, she governed with the attitude of what is right for the state and not what is right for reelection.

When she decided to run, most of us were in agreement that she would win. She would be well financed, and national polls revealed that she was one of the most popular incumbent governors in the nation.

My thoughts were and I conveyed to you, that the only way Kay Ivey could lose the race was if she beat herself. If she misspoke or did a debate and made a miscue or misstep. She did none of the

above.

She ran a perfectly scripted, flawless campaign. She campaigned as governor and looked gubernatorial. Most importantly, her campaign TV ads were brilliant. They were folksy with the perfect Alabama flavor. They had her looking good, speaking well and southern with a grandmotherly appeal. They made her age and demeanor an advantage. She came out of the campaign being better liked than before. Some of her ads came close to being racist when she said, “Folks think we ought to require our schools to teach everyone to speak Spanish. Well, I say, ‘No Way Jose’.” This prompted ultraliberal Democrats around the nation to deride her. When Maxine Waters, the liberal Democratic California Congresswoman criticized her, Kay quipped, “I ought to give Maxine Waters an in-kind contribution proxy for her help in my Alabama Republican Primary campaign.”

The big question in the Republican Primary was whether Kay Ivey could win the May 24 Primary without having to go to a June 21 runoff to win. Some doubted that anyone could beat eight opponents without a runoff, especially given that Blanchard and James spent a total of $16 million dollars. She proved them wrong. She beat the field of eight without a runoff and got 54 percent of the vote.

My guess is that she got a higher percent than that on Tuesday.

So, how is the economy?

The United States got some fortunate news about the economy as the recession of 2022. But how strong is the overall economic picture? How bad is inflation compared to other countries? What’s to blame for it? And what might the coming years look like for our businesses?

“Gross domestic product rose 2.6 percent in the third quarter versus the estimate of 2.3 percent,” wrote Jeff Cox from CNBC at the end of October. This was reported by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, covering July to September of 2022.

In fact, the graph from the Federal Reserve Economic Data showed growth from 2021 greatly exceeded that of 2018 and 2019, while the historic 30 percent decline in 2020 left America in a big hole. Luckily, the post-pandemic recovery helped regain those losses from 2020.

The good news boosted the numbers from Wall Street for that time. The weekly jobless claim was up 217,000, but still below the 220,000 estimate.

So, the economy has recovered from the recession; NBER didn’t declare the first six months of 2022 a recession, but that’s their usual definition, so I’m using it. And the jobs lost from the economy in 2020 are all back.

That leaves inflation, which at 8.3

percent is higher than usual.

So, what’s causing inflation? If Republicans are right, then America should have a much higher inflation rate than other countries. If Democrats are right, and it has to do with supply chain issues related to the persistence of the pandemic, then other countries can expect to also have higher inflation rates. I analyze Inflation Data to see.

Clearly America isn’t like other failed states like Sudan, Venezuela and Lebanon, whose inflation rates exceed 200 percent. But Turkey (in some first world organizations) faces 69.97 percent and Argentina, one of the leading South American economies, is suffering under 58 percent inflation. Those who fawn over Vladimir Putin would do well to know that Russia’s inflation is 17.8 percent.

Nearly 20 European countries have double-digit inflation. In fact, the European Union average is 8.1 percent, just barely below America’s inflation level, and the United Kingdom’s inflation is running at 9 percent after years of British

Conservative Party leadership. Now some countries are fortunate to have lower inflation rates, including Italy (6 percent), Norway (5.4 percent), France (4 percent), and Switzerland (2.5 percent). Some tiny countries like Liechtenstein, Faroe Islands and Malta also make the list.

What the evidence shows is that no, Joe Biden has not single-handed jacked up inflation in America, or in the world for that matter. America’s economy is impressive but not strong enough to affect the monetary and fiscal policies of nearly 200 countries. Given how many other first world countries are experiencing the same thing as the U.S., the supply chain explanation is the superior one to “It’s all Biden’s fault.”

And it’s important to note that Japan’s and the Swiss’ lower inflation rates is what’s being pursued by the Federal Reserve, though pushing down inflation too fast could risk another recession. It’s an important factor to keep in mind as America determines the next steps in recovering from the devastating economic downturn of 2020.

Sacrifice is a big part of serving in the United States military. Active duty personnel spend significant time away from their families, and many who have served overseas return home with injuries that affect both their physical and mental well-being. As the nation commemorates Veterans Day, individuals and organizations can take steps to honor the sacrifices millions of veterans have made on behalf of their families, friends and neighbors who call the United States home.

• Encourage a veteran to share his or her story. This

can

Individuals who ask veterans to share their story also benefit, gaining valuable insight into what is required to protect their freedoms.

• Work with We Honor Veterans. We Honor Veterans is a program sponsored by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization that is designed to help organizations serve veterans in their communities. The program aims is to provide

the highest quality of care to military veterans. Organizations can learn more at www.wehonorveterans.org.

• Support veterans events in your community.

Veterans Day parades are a fun and simple way to show support for the veterans in your community.

Additional events that are not affiliated with Veterans Day also provide great opportunities to reassure veterans that their efforts and sacrifices are appreciated.

Veterans Day is a great time to honor the brave men and women who have served in the military.

JD Railey Army Lois Martin Air Force Day, once known as Armistice Day, was first celebrated on November 11, 1919, the anniversary of the end of World War I. In 1928, the United States Congress passed a resolution for Armistice Day to be an annual observation, and by 1938, the day became a national holiday. from Memorial Day in May, Armistice Day, which would be renamed Veterans Day in 1954 under President Dwight Eisenhower, pays tribute to veterans who survived various wars. Memorial Day commemorates those veterans who lost their lives. residents of Great Britain, Canada and Australia celebrate Remembrance Day.

A United States Veteran is a man or woman who has served the USA in military service with the Armed Forces. Every year on November 11, we honor these brave men and women. Unlike Memorial Day, which is a holiday to honor soldiers who have died in service or battle, it celebrates all military personnel, both retired and active. Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day and was the celebration of the end of World War I. Before the war officially ended with the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919, all combat ended with a ceasefire on November 11, 1918, at 11:00 am. This armistice between the Allied troops and Germany became known as the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month and is the basis for the Veterans Day that we now observe. In 1926, it was made an official legal holiday, and on November 8, 1954, the holiday was officially changed to Veterans Day honoring all Veterans. Similar celebrations honoring the end of World War I are still held in other Countries, such as Remembrance Day, Armistice Day, and Remembrance Sunday. On this day, take the time to thank someone who has served our Country.

Set a watch over my mouth

It happened again a few weeks ago when I raked leaves at home. I heard Nolin Chambers speaking inside my head: “You can blow those leaves around all day, but at some point, you’ve got to get them up.”

Nolin was a retired police officer who worked as building superintendent at First Baptist Church in Selma. I asked him one day why we couldn’t buy a leaf blower for the custodian and he shared his thoughts. The leaf blower is fine, he insisted, but not the end of the matter!

After all these years I still hear his comment whenever I power up the leaf blower. What is it about some comments that cement themselves inside our brains?

It was longer ago than Nolin’s comment when I was preaching one Sunday night. Remember Sunday night church? It’s rare these days, and perhaps one reason is that we preachers were somewhat braindead after a long day. Nevertheless, the congregation began to laugh during the sermon. I wasn’t aware of any humor I’d shared. I was so puzzled

I laughed along with everybody else, but insisted, “It’s true. We all do have feets of clay!”

County runners wrap up cross country season in state championship

The AHSAA Cross Country season wrapped up on Saturday afternoon as runners from across the state participated in the state championship run held in Cullman.

Between the five schools from Elmore County, 41 racers completed their 5k run against the state’s best.

In Class 5A girls, Elmore County’s

Bella Robinson had the best time of any girl county runner with a 23:11.63. She finished 64th in Class 5A, while Annabelle Orr placed 107th, Alle Hernandez placed 124th, and Ally Orr placed 133rd.

Holtville’s Alexis Troglen wasn’t too far behind Robinson as she finished with a time of 24:36.11 and placed 89th. Tallassee’s Mallory Glass finished 105th with a time of 25:18.85. Troglen and Glass were the only girl runners from Holtville and Tallassee.

In Class 5A boys, Elmore County’s team loaded in the Top 100 finishes. Bryant Duckett paid the team with a 62nd finish and a time of 18:27.85. Behind him was William Mann (73rd), Lucas Drost (74th), Logan Pack (87th), Zane Davis (99th) and Mark Redden (120th).

Herald Fans’ Choice Player of the Week: Jackson Thomas

The votes are in, and this week’s Herald Fans’ Choice Player of the week is Stanhope Elmore wide receiver Jackson Thomas.

Thomas, a senior and Troy football commit, earned 366 of the 700 total votes. As he earned over half the total votes, Elmore County receiver Jabari Murphy earned 176 votes while Wetumpka cross country runner Gavan Baxley earned 158 votes.

Thomas is the second Stanhope Elmore football player to win this season and it is his first honor of the year.

The star wideout had a stellar game last Friday as he capped off his Stanhope Elmore career. In a 21-7 win over Minor, Jackson scored all three of the Mustangs’ touchdowns. He caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Colton Walls, then scored his other two touchdowns via the run as he lined up in the Wildcat formation.

Stanhope, which didn’t make the playoffs this year, finished the season with a 4-6 overall record and Thomas was a huge part in the team’s success this season. He scored multiple touchdowns in seemingly every game this year, and capped the season with one of his best performances yet.

Gabe LeMaster is making the most of his two position changes.

LeMaster, a senior on the Edgewood Academy football team, has made a position change both on offense and defense this season. That has helped lead him to a stellar senior season where he’s help lead the Wildcats (6-5) to the second round of the playoffs.

He scored both touchdowns last week as Edgewood beat Banks Academy, 14-7, in the first round of the AISA Class AA playoffs. It was the first playoff win for Edgewood since 2020.

LeMaster currently has nine touchdowns on offense and five interceptions on defense.

“He’s just done a great job of preparing and doing what we ask of him,” head coach Chad Michael said. “We put a lot on his plate and we move him around a lot to a bunch of different positions. There’s a lot for him to know and to learn. He’s smart enough to learn it and know all the positions. That’s hard to do. We can put a lot on him and not overwhelm him.”

It was simple for his position change on offense: get him the ball. LeMaster, in the team’s first two games this season, had four touches. He had three catches in the season opener and one carry in the team’s second game.

Edgewood was 0-2 after the first two weeks.

So LeMaster moved to running back to get more touches and to also help keep running back Bradley Boone healthy. The move immediately worked as LeMaster recorded 13 carries for 175 yards and two touchdowns in his first game in the backfield.

He’s had five games where he rushed over 50 yards since that move, and twice he’s gone over 150 yards rushing. He’s still as prominent as ever in the receiving game as he’s racked up over 50 receiving yards in five of his last six games.

Even better, he’s racked up over 100 receiving yards in three of his last four games. He’s had five catches for 144 yards and a touchdown, two catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns, and

three catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns.

“I think the running back thing was more trying to keep Bradley healthy, but he does a great job,” Battles said.

“We weren’t getting him the ball enough early so we had to find a way to do that.

That was a way for him to get more touches and get the ball in his hands up to 15 times a game.”

On the defensive side of the ball, LeMaster was playing cornerback but the team kept giving up big plays in the middle of the field. With LeMaster being the fastest player on the field, Michael moved him to safety and let him patrol the field more.

That worked wonders for his game. The tackles stayed around the same volume for LeMaster, but his interception numbers skyrocketed. He’s intercepted five passes the second half of the season, and he’s helped Edgewood’s defense improve heavily.

Edgewood is allowing 25.5 points per game this year, but most of that came in the first half of the season. The Wildcats

have won four of their last five games, and only two teams have scored over 12 points during that span.

Two teams were held to seven or less points.

“Defensively, we were getting beat on big plays a lot early in the season, so we put our fastest guy back there to stop,” Michael said. “Those 75-yard plays were turning into 15-20 yard plays. Putting him back there has made him more free to read the quarterback and he doesn’t have to lock in on specific person. We let him play free and go where he feels the ball is going. That’s letting him have the big plays that he has.”

Edgewood will need LeMaster’s big play threat this week as they take on the No. 1-ranked team in all of AISA. The Wildcats travel to Patrician Academy on Thursday night in the AISA AA semifinals.

Patrician is outscoring its opponents by an average of 32 points per game this season and has not lost a game. They beat Abbeville Christian, 55-13, in the first round.

The 64th annual AHSAA North-South All-Star football game has released its rosters and three football players from Elmore County have been selected to play in the event.

Brandon Dean, the Director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association, made the announcement of the two 37-member rosters on Tuesday morning.

Wetumpka safety Dorion Jackson and kicker Logan Weighall were both selected for the Indians, while Stanhope Elmore tight end Colton Walls was selected for the Mustangs.

The teams were selected by nominations submitted by AHSAA member school coaches. The All-Star selection committee consists of the two coaching staffs participating in the game.

The game, which will be played at Mobile’s Hancock Whitney Stadium on December 16, will kick off at 7 p.m. and will be televised over to the AHSAA TV Network and live streamed on the NFHS Network.

Head coaches for both teams were announced last month, with Opelika coach Erik Spearman heading the south team while Pickens County coach Michael Williams will lead the north.

No coaches from Elmore County were selected.

“We have an abundance of talent in our state each year, and both teams selected reflect that talent,” Dean said in a press release. “We are looking forward to another exciting game this December.”

All three players selected from around the county have had stellar senior seasons.

Jackson, who recently committed to play at Troy University as a safety, has been one of the most versa-

tile players for the Indians this year. On defense, he has recorded 55 tackles, nine tackles for loss, two interceptions, and three passes defended.

On offense, he has six catches for 114 yards in limited action.

Weighall, who is ranked as a 4.5 star kicker, has been as consistent as anyone across the state. He has made 36 of his 38 PATs this year, and he has made 6 of his 9 field goal attempts with a long of 49 yards.

He makes his presence known on kickoffs and punts too.

Through 10 games, Weighall has 58 kickoff attempts with 33 touchbacks to his name. He has an average kick of 59.2 yards and a long of 71. He also has 41 punts this year for an average of 39.7 yards per punt and a long of 56. He has landed 18 of his 41 punts inside the 20-yard line.

Stanhope Elmore’s Walls is also committed to play at Troy for both baseball and football. He is committed to football as a long snapper, but plays tight end and some quarterback as well at the high school level.

The star senior scored a touchdown in half of the Mustangs games this year, totaling five on the season. Four of those came through the air while his lone passing touchdown came in the team’s season finale last week when he was forced into quarterback action due to sickness.

On the season, Walls has nine carries for 63 yards, 18 catches for 225 yards and five touchdowns, and he is 16 of 25 passing for 197 yards and one touchdown.

showed why with a big win over Banks Academy last week.

Edgewood has now won four of its last five games, with its only loss coming from No. 2 Lee-Scott Academy during that stretch. But as tough as Lee-Scott was, Patrician looks to be just as good if not better.

Patrician is the No. 1-ranked team in AISA this season and the Saints are showing why with their 11-0 undefeated record. The Saints have dominated opponents all season and have beaten every opponent by at least 17 points.

In their first round matchup, Patrician beat Abbeville Christian, 55-13. The Saints have scored nearly 50 points per game this year and are outscoring opponents 494-150.

Edgewood’s defense has been stellar during their current hot streak. In three of their last four games, Edgewood has allowed 12 points or less and held opponents to only one touchdown twice.

Edgewood has its work cut out for it this week, but don’t count out Chad Michael’s squad. They’re hot and anybody can win in the playoffs.

Humane Society of Elmore County News

This is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, and across our country, animal shelter staffs are working tirelessly helping the seemingly neverending flood of homeless and unwanted pets day in and day out. Shelters provide a place for homeless and unwanted animals to go when no one else can take them in — the young ones, old ones, nice pets, vicious and scared, diseased, injured, starved, healthy — shelters see them all. No matter where you live there is

likely a shelter in your area deserving of a bit of thanks.

The number one thing every pet owner can do to support shelters is to be a responsible pet owner:

A. Responsible owners keeping their pet safely at home, so it does not get lost or injured adding to the load for animal control officers, citizens and Shelters alike.

B. Responsible owners see to their pet’s physical and mental well-being so that they will live long and happy lives with the same family.

C. Responsible owners

see to the medical needs of their pet, especially preventive veterinary care (vaccinations, parasite prevention to include heartworm prevention) to keep them healthy.

D. Responsible owners will spay or neuter their pet to prevent yet more unwanted litters – 60 percent of our shelter’s intake is under six-months old, so we know well the impact of unwanted litters of puppies and kittens.

E. Responsible owners do their homework before getting a pet so that it will be a good “fit” for their family and lifestyle and not end up needing to be rehomed due to a spur of the moment or ill-informed

decision.

F. Responsible owners educate their children on interacting with pets and helping in their care. After all, today’s children are tomorrow’s pet owners/ advocates.

G. Responsible pet owners keep pets from coming into shelters in the first place which needs to be the primary goal of our communities. True success in the animal sheltering world would be less need of our services, not more.

Shelters also need your moral support as what they deal with every day is very often overwhelming, heartbreaking and extremely frustrating.

Shelter staff live the reality of far more animals coming in than are going out but not for their lack of trying. Unsocialized, scared, injured, diseased and dangerous animals are sadly a daily occurrence making Shelter work also quite hazardous for the staff. Shelter work is a field very often taken for granted by the public and all but ignored too often by community leadership. If your community did not have a Shelter, then where would those often dozens or more animals a day go? Our Shelter averages 13 animals coming in every single day we are open with far too many days having 25-30 or even

rabies vaccination if old enough, free health exam with your participating veterinarian.

If you are interested in meeting Diesel any of the Elmore County Humane Society’s pets, the first step is the adoption application you can do here: https:// elmorehumane.org/adoptionapplication-online-form2. html. Once approved, the shelter will coordinate with you to set up an appointment to meet and adopt.

The shelter is located at 255 Central Plank Road, Wetumpka, AL, 36092, the phone number is 334-5673377 and the website is www.elmorehumane.org for more information.

more. In large cities those daily intake numbers are in the hundreds. Think about that!

Since most shelters are non-profit organizations, of course they can also use your financial support whether that be by donating money, food, supplies, your time and your advocacy. Just like every home and business, costs for utilities, pet food and supplies, wages, facility upkeep, insurance, vehicles, fuel costs and more keep going up. Your support helps ensure that your community will have a shelter as adopting and rescuing many pets starts with them having a place to go in the first place.

Alabama Power rates rise ahead of winter

Alabama Power Company (APCO) residential customers will soon see an increase on their bills.

Beginning in December, the “typical residential customer” bill will increase by about $10 a month to cover the higher cost of fuel used to generate electricity.

APCO announced the increase

Wednesday in a press release and offered customers tips to help minimize their electricity consumption.

“Using diverse fuel types and sources has helped dampen the adjustment. We do not make money from fuel expenses,” the company’s announcement read.

“To help customers reduce bills, we offer tips for better managing energy use, finding ways to

save and utilizing assistance programs.”

APCO customers are encouraged to reach out to the company if they have questions regarding their bill or need help finding assistance.

To discuss options, customers can chat online at AlabamaPower. com, call 800-245-2244 or visit in person at one of the APCO offices.

Gas prices trending down again

Staff report

Average gasoline prices in Alabama have fallen 2.3 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.27 per gallon Monday, according to GasBuddy's survey of 3,348 stations in Alabama. Prices in Alabama are 6.5 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 8.5 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has risen 3.4 cents in the last week and stands at $5.32 per gallon.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Alabama was priced at $2.95

per gallon Sunday, while the most expensive was $3.89 per gallon, a difference of 94 cents per gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has risen 6.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.78 per gallon Monday. The national average is down 11.5 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 37.8 cents per gallon higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

"Just over half of the nation's 50 states saw gasoline prices rise last week, pulling the

national average back up for the time being due to big jumps in the Great Lakes and continued increases in New England and mid-Atlantic states," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "For now, the rise in the Great Lakes, brought on by tight supply, has already started to ease, and declines should start again. In the northeastern U.S., prices are likely to inch up a bit more. National diesel supply remains tight but supplies of diesel did see a slight rise last week. The majority of stations, especially away from the East Coast and Northeast, should have very few issues with diesel supply, though

some stations in those regions could see diesel delivery times slip. Brief outages at a limited number of stations are possible, but with refineries continuing to churn out product and maintenance wrapping up, I'm optimistic the situation will improve."

Historical gasoline prices in Alabama and the national average going back ten years: November 7, 2021: $3.19/g (U.S. Average: $3.41/g) November 7, 2020: $1.83/g (U.S. Average: $2.10/g)

November 7, 2017: $2.23/g (U.S. Average: $2.55/g) November 7, 2016: $2.03/g (U.S. Average: $2.20/g) November 7, 2015: $1.96/g (U.S. Average: $2.22/g)
