Resumen A pesar de los innumerables problemas asociados con la propiedad de las monjas, el terreno tiene el potencial de tomar un papel de transformador de la vecindad, del pueblo y de la cuenca de Valle de Bravo. Estratégicamente se puede desarrollar un proyecto que continuamente e incrementalmente agregue valor a la tierra y a la zona que lo rodea. Con la intención de retener el terreno, dicho valor agregado permitirá que se recupere la inversión y que sea negocio.
Summary In spite of the many problems associated with it, the Las Monjas site has the potential to serve a transformative role within its neighborhood, city, and watershed. Strategically, building a project that enables the land to play this role will grow the value of the property and its neighborhood over time. Because the owner proposes to hold onto the property for the long term, this increase in value becomes a way to recoup the initial investment.

The new project is conceived as a dense neighborhood development aimed at artists and other creative professionals. La esencia de un lugar es la cualidad que hace que sea unico. A menudo, por practicas de desarrollo modernas, esto pasa por desapercibido creando proyectos que ignoran o demeritan la esencia del lugar. En parte esto es porque la esencia es tan difícil de definir. Una manera de descubrir la esencia de un lugar es observando su proceso central (la manera en la que lugar procesa todas las energias con las que interactua), su proposito central (el cual siempre parece buscar), y su valor central (el valor generado a traves de buscar alcanzar su proposito a traves de su proceso).
The essence of a place is the quality that makes it uniquely itself. Too often, modern development practices overlook this important quality, creating projects that ignore or even undermine the essence of a place. In part, this is because essence is so hard to define. One way of getting at the essence of something is to look at its core process (the underlying way it processes all of the energies that it interacts with), its core purpose (the underlying purpose that it is always pursuing), and its core value (the underlying value that gets created through pursuing this purpose by means of this process.)

The shape of the valley actually transforms the flows moving through it. Water, for example, is concentrated and focused in the valley center, before dropping out of the valley on its long way to the Pacific. Hot dry winds are driven into the valley from the south and west, cold moist winds descend into the valley from the north. The winds are shaped and deformed by their interactions with the complex landforms of the valley, creating diverse patterns of weather within a small, contained space. The intersection of north-south and east-west mountain ranges creates a vortex of wildlife corridors moving into and through the valley. The valley transforms these flows, and is transformed by them.

In the same way, people are a flow through the life of the valley and are transformed by the valley. There is a slowing down from the hectic pace of Mexico City, and a reconnecting to the flows and rhythms of nature.

El “plato hondo” del valle crea un contenedor salvo de interacciones entre diversas comunidades y especies. El clima es noble y templado. Por su tamaño pequeño, Valle de Bravo es notablemente diverso, sin embargo sostiene un alto grado de armonia entre sus diversas comunidades. La forma urbana tradicional del pueblo viejo invita a que la gente interactue entre si . La proximidad a la riqueza natural invita interacción con los bosques, rios, y el lago. Valle de Bravo es un lugar que invita a la gente a estar afuera y convivir.
The sheltering bowl of the valley creates a safe container for interactions among diverse species, and diverse communities of people. The climate is gentle and temperate. For its small size, Valle de Bravo is remarkably diverse. Yet it has sustained a high degree of harmony among its various communities. The traditional urban form of the old town invites interaction among people. The proximity of rich natural areas invites interaction with the forests, streams and lake. It is a place that encourages people to get out and mingle—a noticeable contrast to other popular vacation spots like Cuernavaca.

As noted above, the diversity of microclimate gives rise to an extraordinary abundance of species. For example, 47 species of oak can be found within the relatively small area of the valley. The opportunities for food growing are also extraordinary—with tropical, sub-tropical, and temperate zone crops possible in close proximity.
Neovallesanos progresivos, granjeros tradicionales, vallesanos, turistas y visitantes encontraran un rango de oportunidades de recreación, vivencialidad, y sentido a su búsqueda. Progressive Neovallesanos, traditional small farmers, wealthy urbanites, and tourists find a wide variety of opportunities for recreation, livelihood, and the pursuit of meaning. It’s as though the valley provides an open invitation for people to slow down and become themselves. And the more they do so, the more they contribute to a culture of acceptance and invitation to others to do the same work.

Si tuviéramos que resumir la esencia de Valle de Bravo, diríamos que manifiesta un espíritu reconciliador. Atrae energías colectivas (gente con naturaleza, colinas empinadas con valle calmado, tropical con templado, rico con pobre, conservador con progresivo, urbano con rural) y los eleva a un lugar donde no solo coexisten armoniosamente, sino que co-generan un maravilloso lugar para vivir.
If one had to summarize the essence of Valle de Bravo, one might say that it manifests the spirit of Reconciler. It brings powerful energies together (people and nature, steep slopes and gentle valley bottom, tropical and temperate, rich and poor, conservative and progressive, rural and urban) and lifts them up to a place where they not only co-exist harmoniously, but co-create a wonderful place to live.
Sin embargo, todas estas buenas cualidades están cada ves mas amenazadas si la comunidad fracasa a tomar conciencia y responsabilidad proactiva por ellas. La salud del lago traera implicaciones muy graves para los dos, Valle de Bravo y México D.F. Fracasar en proveer salidas significativas y oportunidades para la comunidad de jóvenes esta causando drogadicción, enajenación y desintegración del tejido social. Una manera muy poderosa juntar a la gente a colaborar en su futuro es a través de articular su vocación. Jaime Lerner, regente de Curitiba, Brasil dijo “toda gran ciudad tiene una vocación”. Una vocación es aquella importante labor que tiene una comunidad como llamado. Es lo que una comunidad es en lo que se esta transformando y algo que siempre requiere un empuje que va mas allá de si. Con el trabajo de investigación y planeación del proyecto del Centro de Arte y Ecología, el grupo concluyo que la vocación de Valle de Bravo es:
However, these many good qualities will be increasingly threatened if the community fails to take conscious and pro-active responsibility for them. The declining health of the lake holds major implications for both Valle de Bravo and Mexico City. And the failure to provide meaningful outlets and opportunities for the community’s young people is setting the stage for alienation, drug abuse, and the disintegration of the social fabric. A powerful way to bring a community together to work on its future is to articulate a vocation for it. As Jaime Lerner, former mayor of Curitiba Brazil, says, “Every great city has a vocation.” A vocation is the important work that a community is being called to do to serve something larger than itself. It is what a community is becoming, and always involves a stretch beyond what it currently is able to do. Out of the planning work for Las Monjas, the group developed the following statement of a possible vocation for Valle de Bravo:

Primero, Valle de Bravo es una fuente de agua potable para el DF, y sin una fuerte conexión, la ciudad arriesga perderla. Segundo, Valle de Bravo tiene un lago que la ciudad de México perdió. Tercero, Mexico tiene que reconectar seriamente con la naturaleza y su fuente de alimento, aire puro, buena salud y sustentabilidad. Valle de Bravo con su cultura progresiva y sus aspiraciones a una ecología sustentable, es un laboratorio perfecto para aprender y luego enseñar y demostrar a su ciudad hermana como crear un futuro mas saludable.
First, Valle de Bravo is literally a source for Mexico’s drinking water. Without a strong connection to that source, the city could see it severely compromised. Second, Mexico’s historical roots were in a valley with a lake, much like Valle de Bravo. Third, Mexico badly needs to reconnect to nature as the source for food, clean air, clean water, good health, and sustainable livelihood. Valle de Bravo, with its progressive culture and its aspiration to ecological sustainability, is a perfect laboratory for learning, and then teaching, its larger sister city how to create a more healthy future for itself.

To reach this community, it will need to shape its message so that it is inherently compelling, interesting, and inviting, rather than preachy or didactic. Artists play an important role in awakening a culture to its deeper core values as well as its emerging realities. The ecological and social justice dimensions of the project should be carried out with enough transparency and intelligence that they can serve as a fertile source of inspiration to the envisioned artist’s colony that will live there.
