HERE A GAME, THERE A GAME Games around the world bring people together Samantha Santos There is one thing that brings the world together every two years. Tons of fanfare is put into it, and people everywhere anticipate it. But why do we love the Olympics so much? These games achieve something that, at times, seem impossible. They bring together so many different kinds of people that would otherwise never be together. We hold the Olympics with high esteem, but there are smaller games that we sometimes ignore and take for granted that can be equally as important. Have you ever thought about all the other games you can be a part of that brings various types of people together? Many places host video game tournaments, fantasy football leagues, trivia contests, and BINGO nights. These games are just as important, and we often don’t even realize it. A trivia contest is not likely going to reach as large a mass audience as the Olympics, but these types of games are critical to happy communities. People take these opportunities to relax, to

6

| ISSUE 84

be entertained, and to connect. Think about BINGO. It is one of those games that can bring people together. It takes no memory, language, or skill to play. Therefore, people of different ages, ethnicities, genders, and social statuses can play together with no unfair advantages and no pressure. What’s even more surprising is that many of these games are played all over the world. We could have a worldwide tournament of these types of games for every-day people, and there is a reason these are so effective in our communities. Funny enough, it’s pretty much the same reason the Olympics were started. Humans need a break and need to be entertained. More importantly, we need to be able to come together and to celebrate. At times, the world seems like it has never been more divided, never so full of hate and tragedy. Our daily lives are full of stress and worry. Maybe what we need right now is to have more opportunities to come together in some harmless fun.

GOTTA CATCH EM’ ALL Pokemon Go appeals to the older generation

Lexi Clary We love them, we catch them, and we collect them. Yes, that’s right, I am talking about Pokémon Go. The app that has had not just thousands, but millions of downloads within seconds upon its arrival in the app store. It is my shame to say, that I am guilty of fleeing a scene in hopes of catching a nearby Pokémon when the notification on my phone goes off telling me that Bulbasoar is nearby. Unlike many of the games out there, Pokémon Go is a real world interactive game. It allows users to get up and on their feet, and move around while they try to hunt for the beloved Pokémon. I have seen many people, as well as met people randomly playing this game. In a way, Pokémon Go is bringing people together, whether consciously or by sheer luck. Pokémon Go appeals to our generation because we grew up with them. We collected the cards, participated in battles, we watched

it every Saturday morning on TV, and drug our parents to the movies to see Mewtwo. Pokémon Go allows our inner child to fly. According to an article by Eleanor Roy, a man by the name of Tom Currie, quit his job to become a full time Pokémon hunter. Tom Currie spent two months traveling to try and catch all the Pokémon. While Pokémon Go is fun and exciting there are a few dangers that come along with the game. For example, a girl was reported falling into a pond while playing, some people are even filing trespassing charges for players entering their property, although very few charges have been made. There was even a dead body reported after a player unknowingly stumbled upon it. Here on the Avila Campus, we have a few Pokestops of our own as well as a place to battle. So download the app, get out of the dorms, and go hunting. You will find the game enjoyable as well as an opportunity to meet new people.

UNLOVE GAME Social media and the dating game Dixie Robinson Swiping, hook-ups, ghosting, and just overall, bad dating etiquette has become a sad reality in the world of singles. Technology has come so far in such a short amount of time that just ten years ago, people were thought to be an outcast or weird if they looked online for love: now, it’s the norm. Dating is not only more efficient than ever, but singles have the largest dating pool they could want. Sure you can connect with people in your own backyard, but you can also connect with people from all around the world! According to Digital Trends, some of the most popular dating apps are, “Tinder, OkCupid, and Coffee Meets Bagel.” Although social media has done great things for singles, researchers are starting to find adverse consequences that may make you step away from the app dating scene. Poor dating habits and less sex are just some of the effects of online dating. According to Francesca Hogi of the Huffington Post, there are three impolite trends in dating that have occurred due to social media: “Ghosting, Benching, and Zombieing.” Ghosting is probably the most well-known of these terms and it’s when someone dumps someone they’re dating by completely cutting off

8

| ISSUE 84

contact. Rather than properly ending things, they just disappear. Benching is when a person keeps someone they’re dating “on the bench” because they don’t want to completely cut them off, but they don’t want to completely be with them either. If something better comes along they’ll probably leave, but if not, they’ll still have you as a backup.

“One could also presume that all the technology takes intimicay away...” Lastly, Zombieing is when a relationship has completely ended, or died, and after some time has passed one of the daters starts trying to talk to the other again, or came back to life. With social media, the relationship is many times revived through a text, post, or private message. Another term that must be acknowledged is “Catfishing.” Catfishing is when someone pretends to be a person online and deceives others. In this context, they are usually wanting a

relationship to surface from this, but it usually turns out bad. These dating faux pas aren’t necessarily anything new. They happened before social media and dating apps, however, with the prevalence of using these mediums for dating, it’s happening much more and terms are being assessed. A recent study was published, according to CNN, which found Millennials are less sexually active than the generation before them. This is surprising to many because Millennials are many times looked at as being over sexualized. CNN contributes this research to three key reasons: Millennials are too busy, they have changing attitudes about sexual activity, and they have less pressure about sex. Social media plays a big role in all of these issues: this generation is too busy so they turn to a quicker option to find love, they have changing attitudes because they

can find as much information as they want online, and they face less sexual pressure because they have other things going on in their social life. One could also presume that all the technology takes intimacy away from people, so they don’t want to have a sexual relationship. Dating has changed in so many ways within the last 10-15 years, mainly with the rise of technology and social media. This has made dating easier and faster. Research has shown that dating apps have changed the way people, especially Millennials, date. In some ways it’s better because the dating pool is larger and one can potentially find the ideal partner they’re looking for. In some ways it’s damaging because people are being more impolite and having less intimacy with others. Either way, dating will continue to evolve as technology does, and it’s important that people know their options. ISSUE 84 |

ADULTING

101: HOW TO LAUNDRY

A beginners guide to the adult world Brianna Peralta and Gracyn Reed

Sometimes as we grow up we begin to face challenges in our adult lives that seem like simple tasks until you realize you have no idea what you’re doing. Fear not, we are here to teach you how to conquer said tasks with ease. So here is a list of 5 easy steps that will teach you how to do your laundry. Step 1: Separate Lights and Darks First you are going to want to take your pile of clothes and separate them into two piles. One pile will be for lighter clothes and the other pile for darker clothes. Once you do that you will take one of your piles to the washing machine and throw it in. Step 2: Stain Removal As far as detergent goes there are a couple options you have as far as what you can use. You can use a detergent that you pour in yourself or a lot of detergent brands now make detergent pods that you can just throw in with your

10

| ISSUE 84

laundry. The choice is yours. Step 3: The Button Situation Once you put the detergent in you’re going to look at the little buttons on the top and choose your settings according to what kind of clothes you put in. Colors are traditionally washed in cold water, while lights can be washed with warm water. Once you adjust the settings press start and wait for them to wash themselves. Step 4: Switch over your clothes At some point you may forget that you started your laundry but when you remember you switch your clothes over to the dryer. Once they are inside then you press start to dry them. Step 5: Fold your laundry Once you have nice and dry clothes just load them back into the basket and fold them and just like that you did your laundry. REMEMBER WHEN? Avila’s parking remains problematic Executive Team

Parking at Avila has been a problem for a very long time. In issue 49 of the Talon, parking was the main subject. They discussed how the commuters of Dallavis are restricted to merely 6 parking spaces in front of the building, and have to resort to parking on Oak St or a parking lot far

away. Dallavis students aren’t the only ones with parking problems but with the addition of the new parking lot last year, most of that has been eliminated. Today the Executive Team is having some troubles finding a parking spot; complete the maze and help them park in time for class!

FASHION FRENZY

Staying up to date with fall fashion trends Maci Hodges

One game very rarely talked about but played by almost everyone is the fashion game. If there is one thing certain in life, it’s that style is a key factor in looking and feeling successful. Staying up to date with fashion trends is a great way to get that pulled together look. No one wants to be that person getting caught wearing last year’s styles. Fashion trends constantly change from season to season and year to year, so being fashionable takes effort. Looking like a million bucks might not win a trophy, but it sure could turn some heads. Although fashion is unique to each individual person, diverse trends definitely help with building an attractive wardrobe. Having a great fashion sense doesn’t mean being completely trendy. Just a few hip pieces can go a long way after learning to mix and match a wardrobe. Being creative and learning

12

| ISSUE 84

how to accessorize can improve anyone’s style. This can take some serious skill, but as every good stylist knows, practice makes perfect. Finding just the right outfit for specific events isn’t a game of chance. It takes detailed strategy to construct winning outfits. Ever wonder why some people seem to have a natural sense of style, while others can’t seem to match a pair of socks? Just like any game, being a great player takes effort, determination and practice. It’s no different in the fashion world. Don’t be afraid to try new combinations, colors, and trends. Now is the perfect time to start. Want to find the perfect looks for Fall? Then it’s time to get in the fashion game. Fall calls for a new game plan. Stop envying all those great looks from the sideline. Get in the game and start looking and feeling like a winner!

LIFE ISN’T ALWAYS A GAME How alcohol poisining effect teenagers in the United States Scott Bower Growing up, most of us went through a program in elementary school commonly known as D.A.R.E.: Drug Abuse Resistance Education. As we sat there, listening to the officer in full uniform present, the risk of drugs and alcohol became suddenly apparent. One thing was discussed considerably more than any other topic was drunk driving. Statistics were shown to us and sometimes even some photos of the accidents. However, D.A.R.E. spent very little time on the dangers of alcohol poisoning. The Center for Disease Control, CDC, defines alcohol poisoning as, “Drinking a large amount of alcohol in a short period of time.” Most people think that alcohol poisoning just means getting drunk. However, an abundance of alcohol in the body can shut down critical areas of the brain that have control over heart rate, body temperature, and breathing. That is what alcohol poisoning can do to the body as you are rolling the dice on death. When you are affected, it appears as though you have simply passed out drunk. So your friends most likely won’t know you need medical help.

January 6th, 2015 the CDC reported that there are more than 2,200 alcoholpoisoning deaths in the U.S. each year –an average of 6 alcohol poisoning deaths every day. Very shocking statistics considering it doesn’t include drinking and driving, homicides, or suicides. So the question is, why doesn’t alcohol poisoning get the same coverage that drunk driving gets? About 2,000 underage drinkers die every year from drunk driving. Most teens are aware of the dangers that drunk driving accompanies, but are less informed on the risks of alcohol poisoning. I fear that many teenagers my age are unaware of all the dangers that alcohol brings. Most everyone is educated on drunk driving, that’s a nobrainer; unfortunately, I don’t think that the education system does enough to inform students on alcohol related issues, especially in college. Drinking to the point of blacking out is a major risk and you are essentially living life as if it is a game. Life is short, but not permanent. ISSUE 84 |

GOT BOOKS? New textbook distribution creates less headaches Kyleigh Zoltek Everyone should know about the new book distribution system at Avila University. It’s been advertised under EaglesIN on the University website. So now, instead of having to search for your books either online or at the bookstore, you can pick up every book required without any hassle. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Books distributed through this new system are not paid for upfront; rather the payment is included in tuition. There’s not too much to worry about now regarding having to write a check or come up with a large sum of money at the bookstore. Since the entire payment is placed within tuition, it’s a bit easier to establish a better method for purchasing books. Not to mention it helps make an easier budgeting plan. With this new method for college textbooks, there is little to no wait time. When your books are ready, and you

16

| ISSUE 84

can find this notification on your MyAU page, you can head down to the University, enter the bookstore, show them your Avila ID, and they’ll have your materials ready for you. It may be about a five minute wait time (or shorter), and once it’s over, you can grab your textbooks and go. You don’t have to lament over standing in line, with multiple books weighing down your arms. It’s a lot easier to just pick up your required textbooks and pay for them through tuition, rather than search and pay for them at the bookstore. Certainly, it’s much better than having to agonize over picking what you do need, waiting in line or making multiple trips up to the University because you forgot a book or two. Since the new distribution system is put in place, receiving what you need is made a lot easier. Maybe less cumbersome, too.

BRAIN TRAINING HYPE Are they worth the time and money? Zeff Lewey Online brain training games are heavily advertised. They claim these games and apps are an advantage for your brain and that playing regularly can increase cognitive functions. What a perfect answer for the Millennials; they can continue to saturate their world with Online, virtual programs instead of interacting with the outside world. Sure, mental exercise is at least just as important to our well being than any other aspect of our lives, but should we pay for it just for cognitive “regimens” and to get smarter? Do they actually work? Are they worth it? Do they actually increase IQ, memory, and cognitive aptitude? There is definitely a divide in the scientific community about the effectiveness of

18

these games and a definitive answer may not be here as soon as we’d like. Although many researchers assert that these virtual games and brainteasers can be effective in increasing mental health, there is little research or scientific evidence to show that these games actually work to improve cognitive functions such as memory and actually make people smarter. Companies like Luminosity, Happy Neuron, Fit Brain by Rosetta Stone, and Neuronation will continue to claim to exercise your brain, and keep it sharp and healthy, but advertise in such a way that preys on the publics fear of diminishing memory. Nothing keeps the brain more efficient than a classic puzzle such as Sudoku.

I’ve had a summer filled with amazing experiences and great ideas that I’m excited to share with you. One way to change for the better is to evaluate your current situation and look for ways to improve it. There is always a problem looking to be solved and there is always room for improvement. Don’t be afraid of change. Mohammed Alabdullah, International Editor

LEARNING A NEW LANGUAGE Going from Japanese to English Atsushi Hida

In 1991 on march 21st, I was born in Chicago. I don’t remember anything because my family and I went back to Japan when I was about a year old. Most of the time I spent growing up was in Japan so technically my first language is Japanese. About 3 years ago, I graduated from Kokushikan University in Japan; I got a business degree. I was supposed to work somewhere but at the time I really didn’t want to work and I wanted to do something new. I told my parents about how I wanted to learn English in the United States and they gave me a chance to come the United States to study abroad. I think it was good decision. I have been here in Kansas City for about 2 years and 6 months. Now I am living with 4 American friends and two dogs. So I learn English at all times everyday and I get so many new experiences in American life which I really like. Actually I have learned English in Japan when I was a high school

22

| ISSUE 84

student. But I think my high school English education was really bad. Because they taught us how to write and read English. But they didn’t teach us how to use English in our life. So of course I had some problems with English when I came here. When I was afraid to use English One of my friends, who is also international student but his English is really good. I asked him, “So… why is your English really good? Have you studied a lot?” He answered it and told me, “No…Do you translate when you talk to somebody, Sushi?” I said, “Of course! Dude! I have to translate in my head when I talk to someone.” He told me, “You shouldn’t care about it. Don’t translate in your head when you use English. I know it is difficult to do that. But it will help you a lot.” I try it every single time but it is really difficult to do that. I think my English is getting better little by little. I hope I will be able to use English without translating.

HOW VIDEO GAMES INFLUENCE US How video games actually make a difference Mohammed Alabdullah

One of the most common effects on games, especially on internationals, is for us to pick it up on other languages, especially since gaming usually starts at an early age. It would open our minds to think that there is something out there more than my house or my city. There is a whole world to explore. Video games have done a lot of help for me to understand and put things together in English words. In the older days, around the 1990’s, there was about only one to five languages for each game and some of them offer English only. Lots of people think games are dull and childish because you just do this and that and you’re done, but for actual games it’s way more than that. It’s to be able to read another language, think, and solve a puzzle. This whole process is full with learning opportunities. First is to begin to learn a language, understand it, and be able to solve problems. You see it’s already harder to us to even engage with a game. Now gaming

24

| ISSUE 84

world is pretty successful and carries a variety of players from all over the world, communicating with English. Now we caught the attention of game developers and they started to offer other languages and even more involved with the language. It’s not a script on a screen. Also the dialogue between characters, writings on walls, and even puzzles. I was really happy one day to be able to play a game with an Arabic commentary and characters voices in Arabic too. What I’m trying to say here, video games are not just entertainment. They are more than that, let’s assume we can speak that language that the game offers, we learn thinking, problem solving, and multitasking skills. So many skills that might need another article to explain. We also keep in mind that it had a bad side, but this article to show the application of the positive side. Now we can also add languages too.

THE ROAD TO SUCCESS ISN’T MAPPED Life is a game, all you have to know is how to play it Yessica Ramirez

My family comes from a town in Mexico called Cuauhtémoc, which is located in the west-central part of Chihuahua. Coming from Mexico to the United States, my parents hoped for a better life and future for us. They have given us their all, and for that I am blessed. What I am going through today is nothing compared to the hardships that my parents went through. They are the reason why I believe that I can do anything. In my family, there is no such thing as “I give up.” I’m proud to say that I’m one of the few in my family that is attending a university. God has given me hardworking and supportive parents. I feel beyond blessed and grateful every day. Without their support and God’s, I would be nowhere right now. Before starting at Avila, I felt like I was going to be so focused on finances, and I was going to overlook my career/life. Like many other college students the thought of paying for college seemed impossible. With the help of a scholarship awarded to me by the school and help from my parents who donated the little that they had, the impossible became a

reality. Life’s like a game of cards; you just never know what card you’re going to get. Sometimes I am afraid that I may be making the wrong decisions. Nonetheless, I continue to hope for the best, through good or bad. There is so much I want to do with the little time I have. “Are you even going to get a job after college?” is a question that’s asked way too often. We may have a plan but that doesn’t mean it’s going to go exactly like we hope. What I know is that I’m truly excited for what the future holds for me in the film industry. My goals in life are to always do my best and succeed for my parents and myself. I know this journey is going to be rough; the road to success isn’t easy. Though I know I can do this. My parents are my main role models, and I want them to be as proud of me as possible. I will always put in my all. I am excited for what this long journey to success will bring to the table because the best dreams are always difficult to obtain. I have to thank God every day because without him, I am nothing.

ISSUE 84 |

BENEFITS OF CREATING GAME APPS Why we shouldn’t miss it Bandar Alhaidary Making applications became more beneficial and brought attention to many programmers. In the last few years the applications programming changed to be easy and reasonable to nonprogrammers. Since programming tools published online and a lot of famous games uploaded to the Internet as an open source, the customers involved in it. Companies opened their hands widely to let people enter their world, for their benefits and people too. Before they start publishing applications, the developers have to create an account and register to become a developer. Based on Apple and Google (Android) websites. Apple App Store has a fee of $99/ year. Google Play has a one-time fee of $25. From there on, developers have to publish the application under three different ways. The first way is to publish it as a free application with free ads. With or without limit. The second way is to publish it as a free application with ads. This way is popular in a gaming application, and sometimes they over it with limited function, that has a hint to the user if like it, buys it. The third way is to publish it as a paid version free ads with no limit of functions. For ads the developers don’t have to find companies to announce

their ads; there are advertising agents will take care if the rest like Ad-mob by Google. As I mention in the beginning companies tries to make coding easy and easy too, because they have many people buying and using their phone or tablet and upload more and more of applications every day. By the way, they collect the transaction fees too. According to Apple and Google developer website the developers will receive 70% of the payment. The remaining 30% goes to the distribution partner and operating fees. For applications, those developers offer on Apple store and Google Play. The difficult start is easy to end, that is the way that developers will end with after launched the first application. The next application will be more easily than the first one, due people know the quality of the first application and knowing the publisher. In the future, the developer may receive a feedback from user’s or have some request from them to create their ideas and developers will have the advantage of it. In these days with see, some game applications became wellknown with the first breakthrough, and the developers became rich after launching their applications. If you do have the desire. Maybe you will be one of them.

A FRESHMAN HOW TO

How to navigate your way through Freshman year Saleh Alotaibi Did you ever wish you had a handbook on how to navigate life as a college freshman? Maybe an older mentor could have given you advice along the way. Here are five tips that every incoming college freshman should know. First, you should keep an open mind and don’t be too quick to judge. This is something you should keep in mind throughout your entire life, but it’s especially important your first weeks at school. You don’t know the kind of home life the other students are leaving behind or the environment they grew up in or what experiences they’ve been through. Be friendly, be welcoming and be open-minded. Give people a few chances. Second, don’t over pack. Your roommate will thank you for this, your R.A. will thank you for this and, someone who helps move you in would thank you for this. You don’t need your entire wardrobe and your prom dress. You don’t need 18 notebooks. Don’t mess up your room before you’ve even started studying because the year only gets busier and it only gets harder to find time to clean. Things really do add up over time. Third, attend welcome events. Yes,

30

| ISSUE 84

they are cheesy. Yes, they are awkward. Yes, you will probably be there with your roommate, but at least you won’t regret not going. And you never know who you’ll meet. At the very least, you’ll get free food. You should also go to the involvement fair. Give all sorts of clubs a try. Don’t limit yourself to one area of involvement. Go to the fair and see what’s out there. If you don’t see what you want, start a club of your own. Fourth, don’t forget where you came from. Don’t forget about the city that raised you, the teachers that pushed you, the coaches that helped you grow as a person and the family that shaped you. Think of home often, call your parents and keep in touch with your friends from high school. It’s OK to miss home and it’s OK to feel like you’ve out grown it, but have respect for the place that nurtured you. Fifth, work hard. Play hard too, but know that your GPA won’t recover from a first-semester freshman slip up. If you don’t work hard your first semester, it’ll show. You won’t bounce back like you think you’re going to and you can’t ride through college like you may have through high school. Put some hours in at the library and do your best.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

2016 is slowly winding down, and with the Olympics just finishing up, the fall season means playoff baseball, the return of Saturday tailgates and NFL Sundays, as well as the preparation of the NHL and NBA seasons. We are only a few weeks away from the start of postseason baseball, in which the Royals are making one last push to reach the postseason after a great 2015 season. The October edition of the Talon is all about games. What determines the outcome of a game? Are new games gaining traction in the Kansas City area? This issue will give you a glimpse on what the term “game” really means.

Ryan Meyer, Sports Editor

A NEW WAY TO SPORT How Frisbee golf is growing like wildfire Zach Hoeflicker Frolf. Frisbee golf. Disc golf. All different names but all relate to the same game. Many people have no idea what disc golf really is. You may have seen the discs at a local sporting goods store or the metal chain basket in a wooded park, but didn’t think anything of it. The point of the game is pretty simple. Similar to actual golf, you want to limit the amount of shots you take. Instead of clubs and golf balls you use discs, which come in a variety of different weights, colors, and styles. To finish out a hole you putt into a chained basket, where your disc has to stay to count as finished. Each player can achieve their score in different ways by the style in which they throw it. You can choose to throw backhand, forehand, or tomahawk, all of which have different advantages. Frolf is growing for many different reasons. One being that it’s fairly cheap. Most courses, including dozens around the Kansas City metro, are free of charge. The discs themselves cost from anywhere around $820 dollars for new ones, and possibly cheaper if you buy used or misprinted ones. You can even buy starter sets that give you a driver, midrange, and a putter. Another reason this game is taking flight is that it’s laid

back and a great way for individuals to get outside and explore new areas. Every course is unique in its own way and offers different views and terrain. Just around Kansas City there are a variety of courses including Water Works, which is ranked nationally. The sport is also growing because of the passion in which the individuals that play it have. The hashtag #GrowTheSport has started to spread and allowed people to learn about disc golf and become interested in it. Players find themselves sharing stories and traveling to play different courses. The attitude that comes with the game is one that is genuine and social and has helped the sport grow. If you want to go play, here are some tips. First you will need some discs. If you have never played before, you can go to Dynamic Discs store next to Joe’s KC BBQ and they will explain what to get. For the most part you will need a driver and a putter. After that you need to find a course, which can be easily done by googling for courses near Kansas City. Once you have found a course you like and got a couple discs then you are good to go. Together we can #GrowTheSport one person at a time.

AVILA ATHLETICS

BILL SLOAN AVILA’S NEW MEN’S HEAD BASKETBALL COACH Fresh season; fresh start

Trey Bales The men’s basketball team begins this season with a new head coach. Bill Sloan, previously known as the assistant coach for two years, was promoted after the abrupt departure of Rodney Perry. Sloan spent time as an assistant at Kansas City Community College from 1991-1998, and again from 20022013. Sloan has made it profusely clear that change is in store for the program. He is focusing on getting the team stronger and faster and already has his players hitting the weight room hard. “I believe that we need to get stronger as a team, so before the season starts that is our main goal,” Sloan said. He is also planning on changing other things such as travel arrangements, as well as eating arrangements during road trips for the team.

The consensus around the locker room, amongst the returning players, is they wanted their new coach to be Sloan. Junior Jimmy Dekraai stated, “We’re all really comfortable with Coach Sloan and he knows each one of us as a person and player so we all felt he was the man for the job.” Sloan will take over after one of the best seasons in the programs history. But his team is relatively young with only 7 returning players. Despite that, Sloan still believes that this is a championship contending team. The Eagles start their season November 4th as they travel to Ottawa, KS to take on Sloan’s Alma mater: the Braves of Ottawa. They will open at home on November 19th against Central Methodist University. ISSUE 84 |

OLYMPIC GREATS SAY GOODBYE Summer Wrap-up: Rio Olympics Trey Bales This year’s Olympic Games were a success to say the least for the USA. The USA won the medal count by an outstanding 51 medals. A lot of athletes contributed to the medal count, some first timers at the Olympics and some seasoned veterans at the Olympics. The USA has proved dominance over and over again at the Olympics and for a few of these athletes who have seen nothing but success at the Olympics, Rio was their last stop. There is speculation that most decorated Olympic athlete of all time saw his time at the Olympics come to an end in Rio after yet another dominant performance. Michael Phelps who won his 23rd and final gold medal in Rio is expected to retire from the Olympic Games after competing in his 5th Olympic Games. There is no doubt he has left his mark not only on the Olympics, but the country as well. So if this is the end of Phelps’ dominance in the Olympics, thank you Phelps. Another Olympic great who is saying goodbye to the Olympics is Kerri Walsh Jennings. Jennings participated in 5 Olympic Games asserting her

36

| ISSUE 84

dominance in beach volleyball. She brought back the gold to the USA in 3 straight Olympics in ’04, ’08, and ’12. She fell short of a four-peat in Rio but still added to the medal count for the USA bringing back the bronze. The all-time leading scorer in USA Olympic history, Carmelo Anthony is also calling it quits after becoming the first American to win 3 gold medals in basketball. Rio was Anthony’s 4th Olympics. This was the 3rd Olympics in a row where he brought home the gold. Anthony isn’t the only Olympic basketball member to retire. Coach K is also calling it quits after leading the USA to 3 gold medals and an undefeated record in the Olympics. While it may be just games or sports played in the Olympics, it is much bigger than that. These athletes and all of the others who have competed for the USA have all brought a sense of pride to the country. They have helped us take our mind off of all of the negative things happening around us and given us a sense of hope and realization that this is a great country.

RETURN OF AN OLD SPORT GOLF IN THE OLYMPICS

At the 2016 Rio Olympics we had some old sports return to the Olympics. Golf has not been in the Olympics since 1904 and 1924. That is almost a century since golf has participated in the Olympics. With the return of golf, both men and women competed for the gold, bronze, and silver medals. However, due to the Zika virus, many top players dropped out of the competition. This list includes Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlory, Jason Day, and a few others. The return of golf in the Olympics hopes that it will help expose the game all over the world. According to Olympic.org they are trying “to use the unprecedented exposure of the Games to increase participation in countries that do not already have a strong golfing background.” With hopes of attracting more spectators and participators in the game of golf.

FIGHTING FOR THE RIGHT TO COMPETE WRESTLING IN THE OLYMPICS

In February 2013, the International Olympic Committee voted to remove the sport of wrestling from the summer Olympics, thus allowing only 25 “core sports” to compete in the games. This caused a great uproar in the wrestling community. With the pressure to reduce the number of events in the summer Olympics, the International Olympic Committee began studies on the 26 “core sports” that had the most impact on the game and what sports had the most worldwide grassroots support. On February 12, 2013, the Committee voted to recommend the removal of wrestling from the 2020 Olympics and from future Olympics. After the announcement from the committee there was a major disagreement stemming from the wrestling community. This spurred a worldwide petition. These signatures made a major impact on the deciding factor to keep the sport in the Olympics. On September 8th, 2013 the International Olympic Committee announced that wrestling won the bid to stay in the Olympics. Wrestling in the 2016 Rio Olympics went on as planned and three Americans medaled in freestyle wrestling.

WHAT IS YOUR FANTASY? Why you should have a fantasy team Dixie Robinson Everyone has fantasies to some extent, but unless you’re an athlete it’s likely that yours have nothing to do with sports; but they should. I grew up as an athlete, but as the years went by and college came, I lost touch with that side of me. It wasn’t until I started playing Fantasy Football that I finally got back to my roots. Sure I wasn’t physically playing anymore, but Fantasy makes you feel as if you have as much at stake in the game as the players. What is Fantasy, though? For those that don’t play, it sounds like a foreign language. Take this as a Fantasy for Beginners course, and then get out there and play! You can play Fantasy for many sports such as football, baseball, and hockey but according to the Fantasy Sports Trade Commission, 73% of people chose football as their favorite Fantasy sport. Most people who play Fantasy play with people that they know. All leagues are different, but you will almost always draft for the same core positions. During the draft you will be looking for a quarterback, wide receiver, running back, tight end, a defense, and a “flex” position. Flex is where you can draft an extra player that’s usually a wide receiver, running back, or tight end. You also need a kicker and bench players.

38

| ISSUE 84

Your bench players are there to help you during bye weeks, weeks that teams don’t play, injuries, and projections – potential points your players can earn. The major outlets people play Fantasy on are Yahoo Fantasy, ESPN, Draft Kings, and Fan Duel. Once you have a league to play in, it’s time to name and draft your team. Drafting your team seems totally overwhelming and for good reason, but you don’t have to know anything about the sport to do it, and the sites make drafting a breeze. You’ll have to wait to draft until it’s your turn. If you can’t figure out whom to pick, or if you miss your draft, your team will automatically be drafted based on the best player available at that time. And of course you can always change your team. Each week you will go head-tohead against someone in your league. You earn points based on how the people on your team perform in real life. I know how intimidating Fantasy sports can seem, but it is so fun once you try it. You can meet new people, win money, and have a reason to attend football parties throughout the season. Now that you know the basics, there’s no excuse not to go out in the real world and live your fantasy!

RELYING ON THE

RED SHIRTS

Freshman quarterbacks make or break their season Daniel Galley With College Football in full flow going into Week 4, a lot of the big name colleges; Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, and Texas have all named their starting QB’s. Freshman. With these teams all being in the top on the AP Top 25 Poll it’s very risky that they are putting all of their seasons performances in the hands of someone who has barely come to grasp with the play book or the teams philosophy. Moving away to college is always a daunting process for incoming freshmen as they are stepping out of their comfort zone. They become independent and have to be responsible for their time. Being a student athlete only makes that harder for a freshman with all the time spent on the practice field, in the gym and watching film. There are many questions that spring to mind when a college starts a freshman. If they can handle the big time let alone someone to lead the team. So far they have all started perfect but shaky when it comes to play by play breakdown. Pressure is the name of the game in college football and some thrive and some fail and being a quarterback optimizes the pressure that comes with

40

| ISSUE 84

the sport. Every snap is scrutinized and replayed. Is it right to put that type of pressure on a young man? They may have the talent, and it is something that they can try to prepare for, but being in the situation takes time. It is all well and good doing it day in day out on the practice field, but can they transfer that into a stadium of 60,000 screaming fans and thousands, if not millions, watching back home on TV? Is putting them in the spotlight too early going to hinder their development and confidence? All these questions are things in which a coach should be worrying about. Getting the job done is the most important part of collegiate sports at the top level. Is a freshman the right person for that job? For the most part the QB’s have stood up to the challenges they have faced, and although some of the snaps have been questionable, overall they have performed well and could be a bright spark for these colleges. Having a QB who knows the play book inside out and can execute every game is the difference between championships and “could have” teams. Is a freshman the man to lead them to the glory?

THE OTHER GAME DAY
How Avila athletes spend their free time Zach Hoeflicker Athletes don’t get much free time. Between all the practices and games followed by classes and studying, athletes have a very busy schedule. It’s the little bit of free time here and there that keeps these athletes on their feet. It might not be the biggest window of time but it still allows them to take part in different games and activities to clear the mind and relax. Every athlete has their own interests and passions when it comes to things other than their desired sport. I talked with three athletes from different sports and asked them about what they do in their free time, how they got interested in it and why it is enjoyable, and lastly how often they get to participate in the activity. I first interviewed Logan Foster who plays volleyball at Avila. With her schedule she has very little time outside of volleyball but she loves to travel and explore. Logan has a very adventurous personality and when she is not playing volleyball she is coaching. During the past season she had the opportunity to coach with a travel team and travel on the weekends. She also has a friend with relatives in New York and Florida, so getting to travel with her is a great way

for Logan to take time off. My second interview was with Brianna Peralta from the Avila softball team. The activity that Brianna explained to me was called hallway soccer. This intense yet simple game involves two people that stand on two sides of the hallway and try to score off of each other. The reason that Brianna likes this game is that it’s different and makes her laugh. She likes to play with friends during time off and said that it’s a great way to pass time when they are bored or even stressed in between classes or practice. The last interview was with Tyler Burrow, a pitcher on the baseball team. Some of the activities that Tyler likes are bowling and golfing. He got into bowling with a group of friends and his interest in golf was ignited by a trip with his father to Alaska. Both of these he said allows him to stay relaxed and not put in a ton of effort. It gives him a chance to still be competitive but in a more laid back manor. During the season there isn’t a lot of free time but weekends are sometimes his best option. It can be hard for them to find time to do other activities but that makes it just that more enjoyable for when they can. ISSUE 84 |

A TALE OF TWO THOUGHTS THE DEBATE: At the beginning of this NFL season, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick decided to sit during the playing of the National Anthem. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told NFL Media in an exclusive interview after the game. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

Colin Kaepernick, the back-up quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, has been one of the biggest controversies this year. The issue happened when he refused to stand for the national anthem. Kaepernick’s reasoning behind why is because he didn’t want to belong to a country that oppresses black people and people of color. He has many out there who don’t like what he did and many that do. In the year that we are living in now, it is refreshing to see someone using their platform to stand up for what they believe in. Kaepernick has been using his right to freedom of speech and

expression, which is why he hasn’t done anything wrong. It isn’t a popular decision among veterans and those who are serving in the military, but Kaepernick did just what his first amendment right gives him the freedom to do. He exercised his freedoms and is trying to make the country better. Regardless of whether it was the best way or not, he did what he thought he had to do. Kaepernick is in the media spotlight at all times and therefore has and advantage. He took the situation he was given and decided to express how he feels about how the people of color are treated in today’s society.

WHY IS KAEPERNICK ALLOWED TO SIT? The First Amendment is the First Amendment for a reason. Kaepernick has the right to protest. Therefore, Kaepernick has the right to sit. However, it’s a double edged sword. Those that disagree and condemn his actions have every right to voice their disagreement.

Kaepernick threw himself into controversy this year when he decided to sit for the national anthem. You would think that a quarterback who’s been benched since 2015 would want to stand up. It goes without saying that Kaepernick obviously has the right to sit during the national anthem. As Americans, we have the right to do a lot of things, but that doesn’t always make them appropriate. My problem with Kaepernick’s decision is that it only causes more divisiveness and problems in our country. If he truly wanted to create change, he would have done something that wasn’t disrespectful and divided. Not standing for the national anthem disrespects those who died for our country and heals nothing. During his explanation, Kaepernick emphasized that the United States “Oppresses Black people and people of color”. My question is, if the United States is so oppressive, why do so many people risk their lives coming here? To be oppressed? The simple fact is that an overwhelming majority of Americans are good people that aren’t evil racists. So isn’t that what our country really represents? There is no problem with someone expressing their views on problems in this country, but you can do that without labeling the entire country as racist and bigoted killers. Kaepernick also added, “There are bodies in the

street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.” Further research on police killings however, will show the truth about people killed by police. The Washington Post reported on July 7th, 2016 that, “50 percent of the victims of fatal police shootings were white, while 26 percent were black.” That’s almost twice as many whites killed by police in 2015. Opponents will argue that African Americans account for 24 percent of those fatally shot and killed by the police despite being just 13 percent of the U.S. population. But that statistic does not take into account the percentage of police killed by blacks. According to FBI data, 40 percent of cops killed were killed by blacks. If Kaepernick truly cares about blacks being killed, why isn’t he protesting black on black violence as well? In 2014 the FBI reported that 90% of black homicide victims were killed by other blacks. Kaepernick has the money and notoriety to do something far more meaningful for his concerns, making his actions even more insignificant. The points of my position are simple. There is nothing wrong with expressing concern for problems in America. But Kaepernick’s approach to expressing concern is ineffective, inaccurate, and disrespectful. To solve this problem, the answer is not to create more hatred for one another, but rather bring people together.
