#PRAYFORVEGAS Las Vegas still mourning Savannah Parris

Photo From Jennifer Dana On Sunday, October 1st over 20,000 people gathered for the Route 91 music festival in Las Vegas ready for the country vibes and fun filled night. In the middle of a set, bullets started flying in all sorts of directions. The musician and band fled the stage while concertgoers in the crowd ducked to the ground. The shooting came from the Mandalay Bay Hotel across the street from the venue. A man named Stephen Paddock was the culprit. He was on the 32nd floor and fired from two different windows. He took the lives of 59 people and injured 527 others. There are still 45 people in critical condition. The outcome makes this one of the worst mass shootings in American history. When police located the room the shooting was coming from, they bombarded. Before they

6

| ISSUE 91

got inside, Paddock had killed himself. When searching the room, they found approximately 23 guns and some of them were modified with bump stocks which allow the gun to fire like an automatic. That explains why people believed the weapon was military grade like a machine gun. The police later raided his two homes and found a hefty amount of more guns, explosives, and chemicals for bomb making. Nobody knows his motive, and nobody can quite grasp what he was going through that would of caused him to commit such an act of violence. Today, the police still believe it was a one-man job and that this wasn’t an act of terrorism. With everything going on in the world, it is important for us to come together and make this a community people want to be in.

Betsy DeVos makes headlines

Sarai Jorgenson Betsy DeVos, current United States Secretary of Education, announced in early September that changes were going to made under the Obama-era “Dear Colleague” letter (DCL) about Title IX and she recently rescinded that letter. Title IX is a “federal law that prohibits discrimination based on sex for schools and programs that receive funding...including protection from sexual harassment” (Tatum, Sophie). According to CNN, DeVos believes the due process policy for the accused is denied and that it should be fair on both, the victims and the accused. While she believes she’s doing right, former Vice President, Joe Biden, has said that Title IX should remain the same and any changes will weaken protections of schools hitting sexual assault headon (Tatum, Sophie). Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Democrat of New York, agrees, insisting that if anything, Title IX should be stronger (Tatum, Sophie).

Photo From NPR

However, some are with DeVos saying due process is a need for the process to be fair for all (Tatum, Sophie). I think the procedure needs to be stronger on the victims’ side, because yes, the accused is just as fair, but the victims are not believed most of the time, and that’s what I don’t like about the approach DeVos is taking towards this. What she wants to do is kind of giving the accuser more power over the case. If there is at least a little bit of evidence against the accused, it should be handled seriously, not pushed to the side. Title IX was made to ensure that all schools had a thought out approach in handling sexual discrimination, harassment, and violence (“Title IX”). Avila University has the Title IX procedures located in the Student Handbook to show the school takes harassment and violence seriously. If you or someone you know are needing to talk with someone, there’s a list of numbers in the handbook.

VICTORIOUS

The mural dedication ceremony Jessica Albina YouTube is a dynamic social media platform that allows creators to post and share video content ranging from hundreds of genres from tutorials to short films. Even though this website has been around since 2005, it’s far from perfect. One problem I’ve noticed that has been affecting YouTubers from across the board is how this site handles copyright disputes. The most common defense for copyright infringement on YouTube is fair use, defined as, “the use of any copyrighted material for a limited and “transformative” purpose, such as to comment upon, criticize, or parody a copyrighted work.” For the past year and a half I’ve been closely following the fair use lawsuit surrounding YouTubers, Ethan and Hila Klein, known for their hilarious commentary and original sketches on their main channel, h3h3 Production. In April of 2016, this husband and wife duo was sued by Matt Hosseinzadeh, better known as “The Bold Guy” for copyright infringement. Hoss was suing in regards to a “reaction video” released by h3h3 Productions in February 2016 where they gave a harsh review on Hoss’s video, “Bold Guy vs Parkour Girl.” Ethan and Hila were then given only 24 hours to decide whether or not to adhere to Hoss’s requests, which involved removing the video and paying a $4,000 fee, or face immediate legal action. The couple chose to stand up and defend themselves knowing that they were signing up for a one to two year fight that could cost them over $100,000 and the possibility of sinking into financial ruin. A few months into the lawsuit, a fellow YouTuber, Philip DeFranco, set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money for h3h3 Productions in hopes to defend fair use on YouTube. The Internet community came together and raised a whopping $170,740 seemingly overnight. After almost two years of litigation, on August 25th 2017, District Judge Katherine B. Forrest released her judgment stating, “the defendant’s’ use of clips from the Hoss video constitutes fair use as a matter of law.” Setting this precedent was a huge win for the YouTube community but it by no means defines all “reaction videos” as fair use but rather helps to define it. Rihanna launches make-up line Savannah Parris

Photo From Savannah Parris Everyone’s favorite Barbados babe finally released her new makeup line after a long two years of creating a flawless line of products. Rihanna is one of the biggest artists in today’s music industry. She is extremely successful while having a music career, clothing line, and now her makeup line. The makeup line is called Fenty Beauty, which may sound familiar if you keep up with her because her clothing line also consists of the word Fenty. The biggest hit from the line is her 40 different shades of foundations to match any skin tone or type that will make you look perfect with one layer. She also has a collection of highlighters that are beyond universal in shades of pink, gold, red, and yes, even purple. Along with them being such unique and pigmented shades they are

also magnetic so the tubes will stick to each other which is probably one of the coolest things ever. This makeup line has gotten a load of good reviews from multiple different cultures. A woman from Mississippi named Krystal Robertson is albino and has absolutely no pigment and found her foundation match with Fenty Beauty. Along with a YouTube makeup artist named Nyma Tang who had the opposite problem and could never find a shade dark enough, found her shade with Fenty Beauty as well. The biggest bomb dropped about this line is that is cheap compared to the other brands out there so not only is it inclusive it is inexpensive. Rihanna created something for women all over the world to make them feel beautiful in their own skin.

Saudi Arabia opens a theatre for the first time Abdulaziz Alotaibi

The kingdom of Saudi Arabia initiated a new vision named “2030 Vision. The vision entails many changes regarding education, businesses, and entertainment. Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi crown price is the leader of the new Saudi vision empowering youth Saudis and encouraging them to start their own businesses as it would benefit both sides. Saudi Arabia is dramatically changing within the last years, and one of these changes is that the Saudi government is allowing for the first time to open Cinema and live music performance. It was, and still is, a challenge for the country to take such a path due to the fact that the country is considered conservative Islamic. Back in 2006 the Saudi ministry of higher education launched a program to

16

send Saudi students to the United States, and a large number of students have already went back to Saudi Arabia. The youth Saudis are the ones to have such an impact on the country due to the fact that they were adopting the western culture. Some of the Saudi students are attending universities for filmmaking and music, and now they are relying on the social media platforms such as YouTube to showcase their work and talent. It is time for the country to allow the youth talented Saudis to produce movies inside Saudi Arabia. October 29th is the day to open the first theater in the capital city of Al-Riyadh, and many youth Saudis are excited, and some of them have already produced movies for the first show.

1000 Peacewomen across the globe Yessica Ramirez

On October 2, Avila’s Thornhill Gallery had its gallery opening for the 1000 Peacewomen Exhibit. This exhibit acknowledges many women across the globe for what they have done or are doing. There were photos of them with significant quotes hung around the gallery. We also had Sister Jeannette speak about her personal life and struggles at the reception that evening. This remarkable exhibition embraced women’s profiles and their involvement in campaigning for political rights, promoting peace, education, health, environment and children’s rights. They fight against crime and human trafficking. These women represent thousands of

women who are peace activists. In 2003, Ruby-Gaby VermontMangold, a member of the Swiss National Council and the Council of Europe wanted women’s peace work to be made visible. That’s when multiple peacewomen from different countries met in Switzerland to nominate 1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize. A thousand women were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005. They were the voice for women whose peace work was invisible to the world. Although they did not receive the award, there was good that came out of this. This gave acknowledgment to other women’s commitment to peace work.

CHANGE

Saudi Arabian women can now drive Mohammed Albader

On September 26, 2017, a huge change happened in Saudi Arabia. For the first time, women have been granted the permission to drive. Many see this seen as a positive move in the right direction towards more equal treatment for women there. This was a historic day for the Kingdom and the move follows years of activism and appeals both from within and outside the Gulf nation. For many female workers, the biggest gain will be in not having to pay for a driver or other transportation out of their salaries. Employing a driver currently eats up a third of the average monthly salary for most women who may also have to find the money for their children’s care or

education. In speaking to Faridah Alqahtani, the question was asked how she felt about the new law. “This should have happened a long time ago.” She went on to tell the story of a situation where a mother wanted to take her child with diabetes to the doctor but she could not because she could not drive her husband’s car. This was a powerful story spoken to mark this change in her life. When asked if she herself would drive, she immediately answered “Yes, in about 8 months.” It is clear that this change will have a big impact of all of the citizens of Saudi Arabia as well as the economy and world opinion. The change is progress and a move in the right direction.

CONFLICT North Korea situation worsens Ryo Ishikawa

My home country, Japan, also has a lot of troubles with the North Korean missiles. I feel that it is quite a dangerous position for them to be in. It is light situation when nuclear missiles will be dropped in Japan. Measures against missiles in Japan are inadequate; even if the missiles are truly falling down, it is very difficult to avoid. That is why I am convinced that it is too late to act after a missile has fallen. I only would like to avoid it coming. As a Japanese citizen, I can’t stand any more of North Korea continuing to launching nuclear missiles towards Japan. Is there a safe solution? Unfortunately, it appears that there is no current safe solution to this issue. All that I can do is just hope for peace in the world. I was shocked by one YouTube

She talks about her own harsh experiences and human rights violations that occurred in North Korea. She and her mother escaped in search of freedom in a country that they can’t take for granted. They can’t read love story books, listen to foreign songs, access the internet, watch movies, and so on. There is no freedom for the people. She is advocating her story to people around the world because she wants to inform about the reality of North Korea. You must not ignore such a country forever. We should keep in mind what is still happening there.

NATIONALISM

Saudi Arabia National Day Ibrahim Almutawa

Saudi National Day is usually celebrated on the 23rd of September every year to celebrate the establishment of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by King Abdulaziz in 1932. The date was selected because King Abdulaziz made his proclamation on the 21st day of Jumada al-awwal 1351 AH, which corresponds to September 23rd . The date is, therefore, a National Holiday. However, if the 23rd falls on a Saturday, then Sunday is set aside as a holiday. If the holiday falls on a Friday, then the Thursday is allocated the holiday. If the holiday coincides with other holidays, an extra day is provided to compensate for the holiday. Saudi National Day offers an opportunity for people to learn about King Abdulaziz’s work, how he unified the country as a kingdom, and what he did to achieve this unity. It can be said that on this day, the memory of King Abdulaziz is celebrated. The national day

24

| ISSUE 91

also offers an opportunity to learn all about Saudi’s culture, heritage and traditions, while promoting the country’s pride and beauty in its rich history. This year, the national holiday fell on a Saturday, which means that Sunday was also a holiday. The 87th national celebration was marked with various events and celebrations in all Saudi Cities in all capacities. These included displays of artistic works, social, cultural and sporting events. Houses and streets were covered with green paint and pictures of King Salman and the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. For the first time ever, families and women were allowed to attend the festivities at the King Fahd Stadium in Riyadh. During his address, the Crown prince stressed on the impact of Saudi Arabia on the regional and international affairs. He also added that the nation was committed to achieve international security and peace.

As the cold temperatures come, the football season has come to a midpoint with no dominant NFL teams and one powerhouse in college football. The NFL has seen its share of controversy through the first few weeks of the season, from Ezekiel Elliott’s suspension for domestic abuse, players taking a knee during the national anthem and Marshawn Lynch running on the field to defend an... opposing player. As winter warms up, and the temperatures cool down, Lonzo Ball and the Lakers take front page news in the sports world.

APPEAL Ezekiel Elliot appeals again Ryan Meyer Cowboys star running back is back in the news as he was given a four game suspension for violation of the NFL’s personal conduct policy.. Ezekiel Elliott decided his best course of action was to appeal his suspension, which he was able to begin the season on the field due to the filing of a temporary restraining order in the state of Texas. Ultimately, Eastern District of Texas Sherman Division Judge Amos Mazzant grants preliminary injunction against his six game suspension, citing Elliott did not receive a fundamentally fair hearing before the arbitrator, also granting Elliott’s petition for a temporary restraining order. Elliott has remained on the field throughout the 2017 campaign. This case is very similar to the suspension of Tom Brady for deflategate. Tom Brady waited an entire season to finally serve his 4 game suspension handed down by the NFL as a result of deflating footballs in the AFC championship game against the Indianapolis Colts. Although Elliott never received legal punishment for his many run in’s with the law, the media made sure Elliott would be put in the spotlight for his actions. The NFL has a strict NFL personal conduct policy that does not rely on criminal law. Elliott was in the news as many as five times in the past two years for domestic abuse issues and inappropriate actions. On the field, Elliott has found his grove as one of the premier running backs in the NFL. Elliott looks to help the Cowboys propel themselves into the playoffs and make a run to Super Bowl LII.

REVOLUTIONARY Nike unveils new technology Michael Porter What if I told you that that you would be able to access your favorite players pre-game regimen, their highlights from the game they just appeared in and the top playlist they use for being on and off the court, just from a simple tap of your phone against their jersey you own? Most would be very skeptical, probably have a couple of chuckles and a selective few would ask where did I get this crazy idea from? Nike, the most profitable and one of the most innovated s n e a k e r companies ever, this summer took over the honorable duty of being able to say that for the next ten years, they will be providing the NBA’s stars all the gear and fans with they could ever possibly want. They said they had something that would change the basketball world and with their track record, of course we would believe them. From re-inviting Marty McFlys sneakers from back to the future for charity, to one of the first ever self-lacing systems to the public to the creation of Flyknit. Nike has done a lot for the culture, as the kids would say. The latest is the reviling of the “Nike NBA Connected Jersey”, which will have an embedded chip that will “launch real-time team and player content such as pregame arrival footage, highlight packages and top players’ favorite music playlists,” says the release Nike put out at their public event to show the world. The vibrant colors, NBA sponsorship partners that are parallel to the iconic swoosh, Nike has changed the game again for fan and created a way to feel more connected to the player they are cheering for. It’s going to be fun to see what other companies like the prior NBA endorser, Adidas, has to do to compete with this major power move. All that can be said now is, touché Nike, touché. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros are set to meet in the 2017 World Series. The Dodgers come in winning the National League pennant after defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs in the divisional and championship rounds, respectively. The Astros come in winning the American League pennant after defeating the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees in the divisional and championship rounds. The L.A. Dodgers come into the World Series with some of the most dominant pitching in postseason history. The Dodgers are lead on the mound by left hander Clayton Kershaw, and their ferocious bullpen. The Houston Astros made their way into the World Series with a steady diet of pitching, hitting and defense. The

Astros are lead by former Cy Young pitchers Dallas Keuchel and Justin Verlander. The real star of the team, Jose Altuve has set the standard in the three hole navigating the Astros offense to the World Series. Clayton Kershaw and Dallas Keuchel look to face off in game 1, with a low scoring game looming. Game 2 will most likely feature Rich Hill vs Justin Verlander. The series will feature the infamous pitching vs power hitting matchup. The Dodgers will likely hold the Astros to few runs, while the Astros will try to knock the Dodgers pitchers starters out early. The more the Dodgers bullpen works early in the series, the better off the Astros will be later in games 5,6 and 7. My Prediction: Astros in 6 games.

HYPE

Big Bad Baller Tyler Raymond Photo From sportingnews.com

Arguably the most “hyped” draft pick since Lebron James, all eyes are on Lonzo Ball. While he made a name for himself at UCLA on the basketball court, the media attracted to his father off the court. With outlandish quotes such as, “I would beat Michael Jordan 1 on 1” and using his sons to promote his personal brand “Big Baller Brand” there are mixed feelings throughout the sports world. Opening night, the number 2 pick in the NBA draft made his debut with his hometown team the Los Angeles Lakers. Lavar Ball has ultimately put much pressure on Lonzo to succeed with his remarks to the media and the constant bragging of his son. Lonzo found out very quickly that it wasn’t going to be as easy as his dad thought it would. Patrick Beverly for the Los Angeles Clippers was first team all defense in 2017 and let that be known to the rookie. Getting physical throughout the night while also shutting Lonzo down which would put a damper on the highly anticipated point guards debut. After the game Beverley said it wouldn’t be the last time players go after Ball because of the attention around his family. It seems Lavar Ball’s comments have put a target on Lonzo’s back across the entire NBA. Will he be able to live up to the pressures of being the #2 pick in city of Los Angeles? Can he live up to his fathers bold words? There is one thing without question and that is, Lonzo Ball has the talent to be an absolute baller in the league. Will he live up to the hype? Only time will tell.

Avila students tour Arrowhead

Gracyn Reed This semester in the class Sports, Media, and Pop Culture, the professors Dr. Larson and Dr. Snorgrass took their students to Arrowhead stadium for a tour. This portion of the class we discussed the history of sports and how it relates to pop culture today. The tour consisted of a walk around the stadium to all levels of seating, an onfield testimony to how loud it is there, and a lockeroom photo opportunity. Student Brianna Peralta said, “I’ve been to Arrowhead before but the locker room was the best part. We got to see where each player stands before the game and how the whole thing is set up. I was impressed for sure.” My favorite part was learning the history about the Chiefs first owner Lamar Hunt. Mike, the tour giude, explained the engravings in concrete in front of the stadium, talked about the legacy of the Hunt family, and went over all the things Lamar Hunt himself did to Arrowhead Stadium. You can take a tour of Arrowhead on Friday’s and Saturday’s during the year and can sign up on www.chiefs.com/arrowhead/tours and see the excitement for yourself.

AWARENESS Border war is back for a good cause Gracyn Reed Over 18,000 people payed to watch Mizzou and Kansas battle it out on their TV’s and another 18,000 watched from inside Sprint Center. The only thing that made this battle different than all the times before, is this time the game was exhibition. All the money raised went towards hurricane relief: they were able to raise around $1.8 million for hurricane relief funds. I was able to talk with a local KU fan who has always followed the Jayhawks. I asked him what the atmosphere at Sprint Center was like that night and Wyatt was able to say, “It was an ecstatic time, both [sides of fans] were extremely cheerful outside and inside the [Sprint Center]. Most fans that I talked to knew it was a long going rivalry but the main purpose behind the game is what brought the fans in.” I thought it was interesting to note that most of the fans were there not to see their team beat the rivalry, but because the sole purpose of the game was to raise money for charity. When I asked Wyatt if they should make the exhibition an annual event he said,” Yes, it was a good time for both of the fan bases to come together in Kansas City and not only enjoy a great game but [also] raise money for even better causes.” Both universities should take note here

for sure; if they can raise over $1.75 million every year for a different charity every year it would without a doubt an amazing opportunity for not only the KC community but also for both college communities.

“...NOT ONLY ENJOY A GREAT GAME BUT [ALSO] RAISE MONEY FOR AN EVEN BETTER CAUSE...” The important thing is the fact that the tragedies that hit our country this year are not going unnoticed by teams all around the country. The questions we now ask Mizzou and Kansas is will there be another border war in our future? Can we continue to raise money for charity and give the fans of your schools what they want? Only time will tell, but for now congradulations is in order to both schools for participating such a great cause.

CHAMPIONS

Sporting KC wins another Open Cup Michael Porter Around this time, the film world begins to buzz because of the fact that “Award Season” is soon approaching us. The Screen Actors Guild, Hollywood Film, Golden Globe and the mother of the films’ will be trying to achieve this highest form of recognition. Sporting KC over the few years have created their own dramatic movie in championship aspires that have left fans on the edge of their seat wanting more and more. With the prior history of the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. With penalty shootout, after penalty shoot out in U.S Open Cup competition it says as if that would be the outcome in this amazingly played game against the New York Red Bulls. With Sporting KC striking first with Latif Blessing, a five foot three Ghanaian forward, who scored a header in the twenty-fifth minute. They would go up two with a strike from Daniel Salloi to be able to breathe a little sigh of air. That is when things got really interesting because it is world-widely known that the most dangerous lead in soccer is 2-0 because of the fact that it is enough of a lead for the opposing team to be comfortable enough to put their foot off the pedal but close enough for a team to come back and the Red Bulls would almost make this a visual nightmare for the SKC faithful. Bradley Wright-Phillips in the 91st minute would grab a goal back for his team, making the Children’s Mercy Park crown very nervous for the next few minutes for anything that could happen. Luckily, Sporting was able to see it through and win their fourth U.S Open Cup, which will lead moment going to their chase for an MLS Cup, with their magic number to get into the playoffs being one. #GottaHaveThatCup now transitions from the one that is already acquired to now the big boy that is in their sights. Sporting, we believe in you. Photo From Sportingkc.com
