LEGENDS LOST

PHOTO FROM FOOTWEAR NEWS

Remembering those who passed away in 2016 Lexi Clary As cliché as it sounds, 2016 was one for the books. But, all good things must come to an end. We all knew him as the King of Sweets, with his famous brown top hat, big blue eyes, big smile, and purple suit. Gene Wilder, better known as Willy Wonka, passed away on August 29th. Hopefully we were all fortunate enough to grow up envying Charlie as he got his golden ticket in a chocolate bar that would take him to a magical place with oompa-loompas. One of the most surprising beloved wizards Professor Snape, played by Alan Rickman, passed away January 14th. A very influential R&B Artist by the name of Prince, passed away in early April. His number one song was, “When

6

| ISSUE 84

Doves Cry.” The TV show New Girl did a special dedication to Prince and reran the video on the week of his death. King of pop may widely be associated with singer songwriter Michael Jackson, but needless to say, David Bowie, who passed away on January 16th was a huge contributor to the arts and an influential singer to many other artists. He played in a few movies, as well as his most famous, The Labyrinth. Let’s not forget about one of the most talked about sports figures: boxer Muhammad Ali, who passed away on June 3rd. Although 2016 was a time of loss, these legends will continue to give in spirit as their legacy lives on without them.

RIP HARAMBE

The gorilla that took the internet by storm Logan Sterling The year of 2016 will go down in the books for many reasons, but almost none of them are reasons we want to remember. One of the main ones was the death of Cincinnati Zoo’s beloved gorilla Harambe. Harambe had always been loved by the family in Cincinnati, but it wasn’t until after his death that the rest of us realized his importance. It all started when a 3 year-old child fell into the gorilla enclosure and was dragged violently through the moat by Harambe. The only option to ensure the child’s safety became a shot from a rifle that took the life of gorilla. The child was rescued but Harambe’s life came to an end. His story, though, would live

on for longer than anyone could have imagined. The tragedy became a meme-sensation circulating every phone and Facebook page near you. People were outraged at the violent act that was taken on Harambe and they were letting the entire world know. The saying stands true: we don’t know what we have until it’s gone. None of us may have actually known what Harambe’s death meant at the time, but we all cared—well, eventually. 2016 brought us together because of our pain; let’s hope that 2017 brings us together because of our joy. For Harambe.

BLUE LIVES MATTER Salute to those who continue to serve Maci Hodges “Blue Lives Matter” is a movement honoring American law enforcement. This movement celebrates the hard work and time these heroes provide to protect American communities. Some see law enforcement as the one to blame and often use them as a target for negative and disheartening insults. What is worse is the physical threats they are faced with. 2016 was a horrible year for the people in law enforcement due to countless murders and threats. Many deadly shootings against law enforcement occurred in 2016. One of the biggest threats on the blue life community was the shooting that occurred in Dallas, Texas which killed 5 police officers. This ambush occurred on the night of July 7, 2016 at a “Black Lives Matter” protest. The shooter, not only shot and killed five innocent cops, but injured a number of police officers

8

ISSUE 84 84 | | ISSUE

and civilians. Shortly after the tragedy in Dallas, another horrific shooting occurred in Baton Rouge on July 17. This shooting left two police officers and one deputy sheriff dead. According to statistics from the Officer Down Memorial Page website, there have been 116 officers killed in the line of duty during 2016. Of those 116 deaths, 51 were from gunfire, two were assaults, one was a stabbing, and 12 were vehicular assaults. The hate in America has continued to grow and needs to be stopped. The men and women of the blue life community do their best to protect the citizens of America, while continuously putting their lives on the line each day. Let’s remember the police officers that have died in the line of duty, and salute those who continue to serve.

BLACK LIVES MATTER What is the movement actually working toward Keaton Stewart For the past couple of years we have seen on social media #BLM or #BlackLivesMatter, but only very few understand what it actually is. Black Lives Matter is an international activist movement, originating in the AfricanAmerican community, that campaigns against violence and systemic racism toward black people. This activist group has caused controversy between other races because it has been said to be a racial group of its own. Some people believe Black Lives Matter is simply saying, “Other races and groups do not matter,” but that is not the case at all. In fact, what they are doing is broadening the conversation around state violence, including the ways Black people are intentionally left powerless at the hands

of the state. It is addressing the ways black lives are deprived of their basic human rights and dignity. This movement should be looked at by the U.S. as a recognition and a challenge. We should recognize the effects of hundreds years of discrimination. Then we should turn around and challenge our government, our institutions, our police forces, and our criminal justice system to call out discrimination and reduce implicit bias. The only thing about the movement that people can say is bad about it, is the fact that it is really only geared toward Blacks rights with other races and not necessarily so much with Black on Black crimes.

LIL’ WAYNE AND THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT

“Don’t come at me with that dumb-ass [s–t], ma’am.” This is the response Lil Wayne shared with Nightline’s Linsey Davis when she asked him about the Black Lives Matter movement. He seems to have removed himself from it because, as he says, “I’m a rich [n–ga].” Wayne doesn’t think racism exists because a white cop saved his life once. I applaud the cop for doing so but it does not stop the fact that racism still exists. Wayne seems to believe that because he’s rich, the only life that matters is his own. “I am a young black rich [motherf–ker],” he said. “If that don’t let you know that America understand black [motherf–kers] matter these days, I don’t know what it is.” He then pointed to the camera and said, “That man white; he filmin’ me. I’m a [n–ga]. I don’t know what you mean, man, don’t come at me with that dumb-ass [s–t], ma’am. My life matter. Especially to my b*tches,” he said. I truly believe that if we don’t have anything to ask Wayne about musically, we need to stop asking him things.

ADULTING 101: HANGING OUT ALONE How not to bore yourself to death Brianna Peralta & Gracyn Reed With Christmas break soon to be in full swing, you might find yourself lonely. Have no fears, we can teach you how to hang out with yourself and not feel weird about it! Tip 1: Learn how to cook I will be the first to admit that the only thing I know how to cook is Ramen noodles. During break however, what better time to try to cook up a meal that Gordan Ramsey himself would be proud of! If your meal turns into a hot mess, then there is no one there to judge Tip 2: Start a project We have all had those projects that we said we would do but inevitably put off. Now is as good of a time as ever to buckle down and make something. One of my favorite quotes is, “Create something today even if it sucks.” Tip 3: Take a nap Catch up on all the Z’s you missed

pulling all of those all nighters. Sleep is always a good thing, and it’s cheap too! Tip 4: Go travel somewhere Try going to someplace that you’ve always wanted to go to. This doesn’t necessarily have to be anywhere far but you can go wherever you want! Go to the coffee shop that you have always had your eye on but were to afraid to try, take yourself on a dinner date to your favorite restaurant because you want to treat yourself, go to your favorite vacation spot by yourself and indulge in all your favorite things. Oh the places you’ll go! Tip 5: Binge watch Netflix Go ahead, you deserve it after the long semester you’ve had. There is always another show to catch up on or re-watch and there is no one better to do it with than you!

CONCEALED CARRY ON CAMPUS Do you feel safe at your university? Dixie Robinson Growing up, everyone heard about the Columbine high school shooting. Although nobody thought it would happen to their own children, parents became scared to send their children to school. The Columbine massacre occurred before I was born, so the idea of a school shooting was fleeting. However, in 2007, another devastating shooting happened at Virginia Tech. Most of us were young, but some may have been old enough to understand what happened. Little did I know, the mass shooting epidemic in America would grow and affect us all. Recently, the nightclub shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, along with the killing of five Dallas police officers, shook the nation. All of these instances of gun violence are forcing Americans to take a look at gun policy, and the split has never been more divided. Not only are politicians trying to figure out gun laws within their states, but most states are also trying to figure out what to do about carrying on college campuses. Should we allow concealed carry on campuses? If they do will that make more mass shootings occur? If they ban concealed carry on campus, will it infringe on individual’s rights? Legislation on gun laws in relation to college campuses began growing in 2013. According to the National

Conference of State Legislatures, “In 2013, at least 19 states introduced legislation to allow concealed carry on campus in some regard and in the 2014 legislative session, at least 14 states introduced similar legislation.” Arkansas and Kansas were two of the frontrunners trying to allow faculty members to have concealed carry weapons on campus, and Kansas was trying to pass concealed and carry in general. Arkansas passed their bill with the only contingency being that if a governing board expressively makes a rule against faculty carrying, then they have to abide. Kansas also passed their bill but with the contingency that if a building has taken enough security measures to keep students safe, then they can prohibit students from concealed carry on campus. Tennessee, Georgia, and Texas are states that have also began legislation on this issue, with Texas passing a bill allowing concealed carry on campus starting in August of 2016. At the same time, in 2014, five states have tried to ban carrying on campus, but none were successful. As this argument progresses we will see the impact on how concealed carry affects campus safety. The most important thing is keeping yourself safe and adjusting to the changes as they come. ISSUE 84 | 13

TRUMP & THE ELECTION How do you feel about the results? Kyleigh Zoltek Most people are pretty relieved that the election is over. The campaigning of both candidates, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton has concluded, and the next president of the United States was announced. Whatever you may be feeling toward the now-elected President, his views or the parties that succeeded/lost, let’s try not to blow them out of proportion. So, let’s address the question everyone has been asking: why was Trump elected? Why was Trump elected? As irate or jovial you may be about the entire matter, we should look at the main reason why America elected him over his opponent, Hillary Clinton. The main

14

ISSUE 84 84 | | ISSUE

reason, involved the transfer of power back to the people. Many were fed up with big government and dissatisfied with what occurred over the past eight years, under our current President. They wanted change, namely, in giving power back to the people and the states. They wanted change in a better way, not in a way that would increase the government power and add unneeded problems. Now, I know there were other reasons as to why Trump was elected, but I planned to keep this article short and sweet. So let’s just stick with the discussion of that main reason. Right now, it’s for the best.

2016 FASHION TRENDS Past and present fashion fads Maci Hodges

PHOTO FROM MACI HODGES Let’s dive into the fashion world to revisit some of the best trends from 2016. Fashion looks in 2016 could be known as the year of the throwback. This year favorite fads from the past seemed to make a comeback in the fashion world. Although a few past trends did come back around, there were plenty of new and exciting crazes that arrived this year as well. Every season had its own unique fashion hit. This year, some of the most popular trends came from a previous fashion era. It’s true that they were gone but clearly never forgotten. 2016 showcased denim everything, from the ever loved jean skirt all the way to jean jackets. Most people probably thought chokers were a goner in the fashion world, but that was definitely not the case this year.

16

| ISSUE 84

Every 90’s baby remembers the craze of chokers back in the day, and luckily they revisited this year. Some other popular pieces that reappeared were sequins, flannels, and crop tops. Were these just a 2016 fad, or are these throwbacks here to stay? Fashion for 2016 didn’t stop at past loves. A new favorite for the 2016 year was the romper and the jumpsuit. It was almost impossible to walk into a store without seeing these two items. Ankle boots and thigh high boots were a craze in the shoe department for multiple seasons. Everything stripes, off the shoulder shirts, and dresses were another admired style for this year. Fashion for 2016 was a huge hit and set some high expectations for what’s to come. Will the trends of 2017 live up to it?

NO CLOWNING AROUND The unexpected killer clowns of 2016 Scott Bower There were a lot of different trends in 2016, but the clown sightings were the creepiest by far. The creepy clown sightings started happening in South Carolina around late August. The clowns were spotted trying to lure children into the woods and standing around back roads. But the clown craze soon spread like wildfire across the United States, from Alabama, to Wisconsin and California. Soon the clown sightings took the internet by swarm with videos of people driving and seeing clowns on the road. Most of the videos were of clowns chasing the vehicles and the car driving off. However, in some cases, people were chasing the clowns away from the area. For instance, in one viral video, a man got out of the driver’s seat to knock the clown over and drive off. Obviously, neither situation is safe for anyone. This didn’t only alarm the public, but law

enforcement agencies as well. It turns out that law enforcement had good reason for suspicion. Reports of clown threats began to surface from all over. Some clowns threatened people with baseball bats and other physical threats. But one instance in Florida at Fort Lauderdale High School caused the school to go on lockdown after an anonymous call said that students would be shot if they left school grounds. Another situation caused a Massachusetts college to go on lockdown as well. However, since it is not illegal to dress up as a clown, all that police could do was advise people not to dress up as one for Halloween. Looking back, this wasn’t the best representation of 2016, but rather the strangest. It’s safe to say that nobody will miss this trend being left behind for the new year.

LEONARDO’S LESSON It’s more than just an Oscar Stephen Conway

Finally, he did it. Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar for his performance in the Revenant. This riveting role earned Leonardo his first Oscar for actor in a leading role. This was a huge win for not only Leonardo but the fans as well. Previously Leonardo had been nominated 5 times. This was a long time coming for this 41 year old actor and in his case the 6th time was the charm. As his name was called to receive the award many knew that he would have a lot to say about the hardship of making the film and of course all of the thank you’s that follow but no one was expecting what Leonardo ended on. After all recognition was rightfully given Leonardo went to the subject of climate change. The Revenant is a film that shows the connection between man and

nature. Leonardo’s experiences while making this film opened up his eyes to the real world problem of global warming that he explained by stating, “Our Production team needed to go to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow; climate change is real and it is happening right now.” If this doesn’t open every human being’s eyes there is a serious problem. Leonardo said that we all should support world leaders who do not support polluters and big corporations. This speech brings our worldly predicament to light and is meant to stop the procrastination and carelessness when dealing with our environment. Climate change isn’t something we can’t talk about or shove to the side, if we do not take actions to change our ways we will put the future of humanity in jeopardy. ISSUE 84 |

Bring

2017

INTO FOCUS Focusing on the world events, others, and yourself Gracyn Reed

Some important things happen at the begining of every year. People set news years resolutions they won’t complete, or forget about, we buy gifts for our loved ones on Valentines day, and we remember a lost hero on Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. And of course this year we will be adding an amazing event to the list in 2017; the inauguration of President Trump. Not only will Valentine’s Day bring in another $19.7 billion in spending this year but hopefully the groundhog will predict that the brutal winter will end early. With the inauguration of President Trump comes controversy and celebration. Even if we don’t support his beliefs and decisions we still live in this country and need to be supportive of another great day in history. Another thing we should focus on in 2017 is what we will be doing in our spare time. As we continue our busy lives we find ourselves, at least I do, opting out of our responsibilities and ninge watching netflix and Disney movies. just remember that in 2017 you need to remeber to give to yourself before you give to others --because you can’t give to others from an empty glass. SYRIAN REFUGEES The tragedy of the people Bandar Alhaidary

PHOTO FROM OTTAWA CITIZEN

The Syrian tragedy began in 2011 when the people started the revolution against the regime to claim rights and the will of the people to alter or abolish the government. In that time, the free army began to represent the people as the military wing of the resistance. The Civil war began, and the people became the victim, because the government army doesn’t consider children or innocent people that they are noncombatant. Now the war will begin in the sixth year under the silence of the great countries that have the power to stop this war Syria is a sensitive place and we see many political and economic purposes that prevent the war ending. The silence of the world allowed Alassad to continue and many people have been displaced from their land, houses

were demolished; and some relatives had been killed. Is it not a Miserable situation? When someone looks at the news they see how people are surviving in refugee camps, walking in the flat land trying to find a place to stay, or food to eat, or clothes to wear in the cold weather. Can you imagine that? They have a tough past and unknown future. They are walking days and nights facing anonymous problems. The experiences that refugee camps have, include doctors and engineers, hands of the trained workforce, etc. But they have human rights to live a decent life in his own country and provide crisis aid. Now, Syrian refugees are paying smugglers to take them back to Syria because the EU’s asylum policies are failing. War is destruction of countries, and destruction of humanity.

We have been exposed to the “ideal body image” a woman should have for so long that we began to view our body as abnormal. A few years back, I completely hated wearing dresses and taking full body pictures. I made myself believe that it wasn’t a big deal to me, and I’d rub it off. I told myself that dresses just weren’t for me and that I wasn’t photogenic. I didn’t realize that I was in fact hurting myself until now. My own mind was working against me. I was always worried about my so called “imperfections.” At that moment in time, I didn’t notice that I would do small things to avoid my stomach, stretch marks or arms being shown. That was me making excuses. I realized that I simply wasn’t content with the body I was in. Although I didn’t necessarily hate myself, I wasn’t happy. I wanted to be like those other girls. And to be honest, I don’t know what happened because recently I decided that, yeah, I’m a bit chunky, and?

28

| ISSUE 84

Why does everyone care so much? Why can’t I expose my skin just like those petite girls with flat stomachs? I can wear crop tops too if I want to. I can wear the same things other girls can regardless of my “weight.” That’s what I wanted myself to believe. I was confident in my head. It’s like my thoughts weren’t against me anymore, but they were at the same time. The confidence and self-love was only in my head. I didn’t dare do what I thought. What would other girls think of me? As soon as I felt confident enough to do something, my own thoughts would work against me and I’d put myself back down like “No, I can’t wear that. My rolls show.” On social media, everyone preaches that girls can wear whatever they want. But when girls do, they get judged and body shamed. Hypocrites? Is this how it works? Putting another individual down to make yourself feel above and beyond? In society, you are only seen as beautiful if you meet the requirements of the “perfect woman.” You have to have that hourglass figure. It can’t be fake either. No, it has to be 100

percent real. Real perky breasts, small waist and huge behind. You can’t not wear any makeup, but at the same time, you can’t wear too much makeup. You are seen as perfect when you meet those requirements. But what happens when you don’t? I have seen all over social media the same comment over and over again: “She is pretty, but she has a big nose.” Or, “Yeah, she’s pretty and all, but she has no ass.” Or, “She is pretty but her lips are too big.” Since when has not having a certain feature stopped a girl from being beautiful? Since when has this become an issue and why does this have to be a problem? Oh, and when a girl is comfortable with something everyone views as imperfect, she gets insulted even more. How does her choice in loving herself affect your life in any way? There is so much that has to be said that I feel as I’m just bouncing

from one thing to another. I overcame those obstacles in my life and I’m learning to accept myself little by little. I haven’t reached the full potential of that, but I will soon. I preach often about body positivity and self-love but somewhere deep in me, I find myself hating on every little part of me again. I look at pictures of myself and think, “Ew, I look fat,” “I wish I had a flatter stomach,” or “Look how fat my arms look.” I can’t do this anymore. Why is it a bad thing that we have stretch marks or that our stomachs aren’t flat? Why do we dream of looking like the “ideal woman” that society teaches us? That hourglass figure gets to me at times. How can it not when I’m seen as less of a woman because of the body I’m in. This year, I’ve learned that we shouldn’t cover up our imperfections. Because the truth is, those so called imperfections are what make us great.

Aunque necesariamente no me odiaba, no

30

estaba contenta.

THREE DIMENSIONAL

Why we should accept our growing technology Bandar Alhaidary After the revolution of the internet, a three-dimensional became in 2010 more attendant either software or hardware. In a software which could be programmed even in home and schools. Now in the last month Microsoft announced in October 2016 a new 3D feature come in Windows 10, anyone can capture, create, in a whole new dimension for free. It is easier to create and use than the high-end software for professional users. For hardware manufacturers like Stratasys, 3Dsystems, and MakerBot as well as some companies such as NASA, General Electric, Ford, Nike and others that use the 3D printers to expand their companies. In fields including education, medicine, industrial, metal casting, 3D printers have enhanced their capabilities to grow.

| ISSUE 84 PHOTO FROM 3DPRINT.COM

In this era everything is changing quickly, like the technology, however, surpassed all of our imaginations in a matter of decades. Approximately 36 years ago in 1980, 3D printers were born on the west coast of California. During the first three years it was easy to buy one but was difficult to use but through extensive testing and developing, the main idea of the 3D printer is printing layer by layer until it creates the desired object. There are websites that have hundreds of design models where you can choose from, then print it. In this days we a lot of advertising virtual reality and how its effect in our life, rather using it for education, or gaming or watching photos in Facebook or movies at Netflix. The technological revolution that we should try it to make our life easier, and more fun.

NEW YEARS AROUND THE WORLD How other countries ring in the new year Logan Sterling

It seems here in America all of our holidays have specific uniforms. Easter is pastel, Christmas is red sweaters, and for Independence day everyone wears red, white and blue. New Year’s Eve’s uniform consists of glitter, sparkles, and sequins. In the United States, most of our traditions revolve around overly expensive raves, watching a previously recorded video of a crow of people having fun in New York City, and look around desperately for someone to kiss at midnight. However, other countries seem to have it a little more figured out. For Chinese New Year the history revolves around a large beast Niam

ISSUE 84 PHOTO | FROM GRACYN REED

who would eat people in a single bite, but it turns out he’s afraid of the color red, so everyone paints their door red so Niam doesn’t come eat them, too. In Brazil, instead of watching the ball drop at midnight, Brazilians go to the beach and jump seven times into the ocean while throwing flowers at the stroke of midnight. In the Philippines, they wear polka dots and eat round fruits. Irish women can leave mistletoe under their pillow to get a husband. In Chile, they go celebrate in the graveyard. Learning about cultural traditions in other countries always seem a little weird, but then again Americans just wear a lot of sequins.

A LOOK INTO THE FUTURE Kuwait’s annual event Mohammed Alabdullah

PHOTO FROM QKUWAIT.COM

The world is filled with great events that we go to every year or so. We just folded the Olympics page and here we are saying our goodbyes to 2016. An ending is a new beginning, and with a new beginning comes new experiences. Kuwait hosts an annual festival called “Hala February”. The festival started for the first time in 1999 to celebrate Kuwait’s independence, similar to the 4th of July for the United States, and it lasts for a month. The festival starts with a street carnival, usually on Salem Almubarak’s street in Salmiya area, it also has a market and every shop participates doing promotions and offering gifts. There are also concerts that hosts three singers on weekend nights to

entertain the people. After people are done shopping, taking pictures, and being awed by the sights around them, there will be a theater that shows various activities, like poetry and stand-up comedians. The national soccer team also plays a match with another soccer team, like the Brazilian team or Republik Österreich, in a friendly match to keep the society cheering and bring people together. Every event or festival has a story behind it; it may come in the form of a party, carnival, concert, festival, or a hand clap. It is a story that has to be told somehow. It’s not about how big, colorful, or loud the event is, it’s about what it means to its people. ISSUE 84 |

As 2016 winds down we are able to reflect on those who will be greatly missed in the sports community. Many writers chase the dream of writing as their profession, and let the legends that passed before this year be an example of how much a person can make a difference in your life. In 2017, we should continue to lead by the motto, “be the change you want to see in the world”. Ryan Meyer, Sports Editor

RETIRED BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN

The lasting legacy sports legends left in 2016 Lexi Clary This year has been a strange year, and even stranger now that a few alltime legends in the sports world have called it quits. A three-time MLB MVP and 14 time All Star by the name of Alex Rodriguez, or as some may know him as A-Rod, announced in August that he would retire. During his career, he played multiple positions such as Shortstop, third base, and designated hitter. According to Sports Illustrated, Rodgriuez represented both the worst and best of Major League Baseball. He has been compared to Cal Ripken Jr, who holds the record of playing the most consecutive games in MLB history. Arguably one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, Peyton Manning, who played for the Denver Broncos, retired March 21st. He has two Super Bowl Rings, one while playing for the Indianapolis Colts and one while playing for the Denver Broncos. According to an article written by Sports Illustrated, he holds multiple passing records, including career yards and touchdowns. Kobe Bryant retired from the Los Angeles Lakers earning his title of one of the greatest NBA players of all time. He was named to the All Star team 18 times and according to Sports Illustrated is currently third all time on the NBA scoring

list. The question in consideration is what number he will retire in. More than likely, no other Lakers player will wear the number 8 or 24 again. Vincent Lecavalier, who played 17 seasons in the NHL and won a Stanley Cup in 2004 with the Tampa Bay Lighting, announced his retirement from the NHL while playing for the Los

“... stranger now that a few all-time legends in the sports world have called it quits.” Angeles Kings. Lecavalier was acquired by the Kings, via trade just a season ago from the Lighting in which he spent 14 seasons with. Calvin Johnson retired June 25th and played for the Detroit Lions. He said he considered walking away from the NFL long before he announced his official retirement. Johnson states to Fox Sports that his body had gone through to much even though he know that’s the price it comes to playing the game. “I put a lot into this game and its taken a lot out of me,” Johnson said. He says he is ready to start his life with his new wife and kids.

REMEMBERING VIN SCULLY Baseball’s favorite storyteller Brianna Peralta

The chances are if you know anything about Major League Baseball, you have heard the name Vin Scully. The famous announcer for the Los Angeles Dodgers started his career with the Brooklyn Dodgers back in 1950 and moved with the PHOTO FROM club when it came to Los Angeles in USA TODAY 1958. After 67 seasons with the team, Scully retired as arguably the greatest announcer of all time. Scully was known for his descriptive style voice as well as his signature introduction to Dodger games: “It’s time for Dodger Baseball! Hi everybody pleasant good [afternoon/evening] to you, wherever you may be.” In his last season, Scully broadcasted all the Dodger home games as well as select away games. He called his last home game on September 18th where the Dodgers clinched the National League West title with a walk –off home run in the 10th inning breaking the tie against the Rockies. After the game, Scully addressed fans saying, “I have always felt that you folks in the stands have been far, far important to me. You have given me enthusiasm; you have given me young at heart. Believe me when I tell you, I’ve needed you far more than you’ve needed me.” Then he said he wanted to express his appreciation with the song, Wind Beneath my Wings saying, “You’re the wind beneath the teams’ wings, you’re the wind beneath my wings.” Inducted into the Hall of Fame way back in 1982, Scully called over 9,000 games, and was there for five Dodgers championship seasons. On top of all of that Vin Scully was awarded the Presidential Medal of Honor award on November 22nd where President Obama stated, “Since Jackie Robinson started at second base, Vin taught us the game and introduced us to its players. He narrated the improbable years, the impossible heroics, turned contests into conversations.” Vin Scully was beloved by players and fans alike, and though it’s hard to imagine Dodger game without him but like he said in his final sign-off, “I have said enough for a lifetime, and for the last time, I wish you all a very pleasant good afternoon.” ISSUE 84 |

CRUSHING THE CLEVELAND CURSE Cavs bring home first championship since 1964 Zach Hoeflicker The city of Cleveland and the thirst for a championship, seemed to see the light of day when LeBron James came back to his hometown. The Cavaliers were on track towards winning it all with James as their leader. After losing in the finals the year before, LeBron and the Cavs had their eye set on one thing: winning it all. Facing the gold giant head on, the Cavaliers came back from a three games to one deficit, to go down as one of the best NBA Finals ever. Also as the first team to make such a comeback in the history of the NBA. LeBron, being one of the hardest working players in both the NBA and the world of sports, takes a lot of pride as an individual and in his team. One problem he faced early on was creating an atmosphere amongst the team that could make them successful. This needed to include a team that had

42

| ISSUE 84

great communication skills, know what the ultimate goal is, and also allow failure to push their growth. LeBron and the Cavaliers adapted well and learned to overcome adversity en route to the championship. Losing in the 2015 Finals was tough and put a lot of pressure on LeBron and the Cavs to obtain a championship. After sitting in the background to Golden State and their impressive regular season record, the two teams would meet again in the 2016 finals. The warriors would take a huge early lead in the series taking the first three games. The Cavaliers finally brought a championship back to Cleveland since the 1964 Browns. LeBron answered the prayers of thousands of fans, but most important, won a championship for the city that raised him.

NBA LEGENDS HANG THEIR SNEAKERS UP The league will never be the same Trey Bales With the start of the new NBA season, the league is moving on without a few of the greatest players to ever play the game. Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen have all decided to call it quits. To a lot of you, this may not be a big deal; but to people like myself who have grown up watching these four play this has me left with a sort of empty feeling as I watch the NBA now. Kobe Bryant, the “Black Mamba” spent 20 years in the NBA. He played all 20 seasons in a Laker jersey. A list of Kobe’s accomplishments could go on for pages; He won 5 NBA championships to go along with 2 NBA Finals MVP’s, he is 3rd on the all-time scoring list with 33,643 points. Because of all of his accomplishments, Kobe will forever be in the conversation when people talk about the greatest basketball player of all-time. Tim Duncan, “The Big Fundamental”, played in the NBA for 19 years, all of those with the San Antonio Spurs. Like Kobe, he is a 5 time NBA champion. He ranks 14 on the all-time scoring list with 26,496 career points. Duncan won back-to-back MVP awards to go along

PHOTO FROM USA TODAY

with 3 Finals MVP awards. Tim Duncan will go down as one of, if not, the greatest power forward of all-time. Kevin Garnett, the “Big Ticket”, played in the NBA for 21 seasons. His first 12 years he played with the Minnesota Timberwolves then he went and played for the Boston Celtics for 6 years where he won his only NBA championship. His next stop was in Brooklyn, with the Nets for 1 and a half years before being traded back to Minnesota where he played for 1 and a half more years before retiring. KG was known for his trash talking on the floor. While we may have not known what he was saying, we do know while he talked the talk, he also walked the walk. Ray Allen, “Jesus Shuttlesworth”, spent 18 years in the league. During his career he played for Milwaukee, Seattle, Boston, and Miami. He won two NBA championships, one with Boston and one with Miami. Allen finished his career with 24,505 points, good enough for 22nd all-time. Ray Allen is most known as a shooter. He retires as the NBA’s all-time leader in 3 pointers made with 2,973 3’s.

DEFLATEGATE

A historic investigation comes to a close Zeff Lewey

This year in sports we have seen the conclusion of careers, streaks, and investigations. Peyton Manning announced his retirement, Michael Phelps hung up the swimmer’s cap after the Rio Olympics, the Cleveland Cavaliers won their first NBA title, the Chicago Cubs won their first World Series in 108 years, and we saw one of the biggest investigations in NFL history come to a long awaited conclusion. You may agree or disagree with the decision to suspend New England Patriot’s poster boy Tom Brady for the first 4 games of the 2016 season following the investigation stemming from the AFC championship game in 2015, but it stands atop the sports world as perhaps the most controversial investigation in history. Twist and turns, overturns and reinstatements, topped with suspected Commissioner interference sums up the marathon investigation that spanned over 500 days. The four-game suspension was originally handed down, appealed by Brady, overturned by a District Judge, appealed by the NFL, reinstated by the U.S. Court of Appeals, then appealed again by Brady. This time the appeal was denied and the

44

| ISSUE 84

suspension stuck. As the original investigation began, Brady and the Patriots were accused of deflating game balls to gain a competitive advantage, citing communications between Brady and team equipment managers both during

“...brady and the organization have been tainted...” and after the incident. A decision was made on May 11, 2015 based on the infamous Wells Report released on May 6. The report found that Brady was, “at least generally aware” of the foul play and that Patriot’s personnel “more likely than not” illegally tampered with the footballs. Brady and Patriots owner Tom Kraft disagreed and Brady appealed his suspension, and the litigation was far from over After the original suspension, Commissioner Roger Goodell was asked to “recuse” himself from the appellate

process by the NFLPA, a request he declined. Goodell upheld the suspension after 10 hours of testimony from Brady but again, litigation continued after U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman claimed Goodell went too far in affirming the suspension, and erased the punishment. Then the NFL appealed. Fast forward to 2016, when the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York hear the NFL’s appeal of U.S. District Judge Berman’s decision to overturn the suspension. Almost two months later, the suspension was reinstated, but Brady appealed once again requesting a second hearing almost 500 days after deflategate started. The final conclusion came on June, 13 2016 when the U.S. Court of appeals denied Brady a second hearing. The consequences of the

investigation, aside from the suspension, led to a new perspective of 4-time superbowl champ Tom Brady as a cheater and villain and put the Patriot’s organization in the same light. Although owner Tom Kraft gave Brady his unwavering support throughout the process and denied all wrongdoing, the Man (Brady) and the organization have been tainted, new rules regulate the handling of game balls, and the Patriots lost their star quarterback for four games along with first and fourth round draft picks in the 2016 and 2017 drafts respectively. Did the punishment fit the crime? Did the deflated balls give the Brady and the Patriots an advantage? Those are both based on judgement from a fan’s perspective but in terms of relevance, 2016 will stand as a historic landmark in NFL history.

BRAZIL WINS GOLD First ever for Brazilian men’s soccer Logan Sterling For the first time in history, Brazil has won the gold medal in men’s soccer. They had a rough start early in the tournament with several no scoring games. The heat really got turned up when they beat Denmark 4-0 in the third game. Brazilians started losing faith in their star player, Neymar, but he quickly gained it back as soon as he scored his first goal of the Olympics. He set the Olympic world record for quickest goal scored in the first 14 seconds of the game. Brazil was now on a streak of

winning and it just kept coming. When it came to the gold medal match, which was between Brazil and Germany. The game continued to stay tied throughout the entire match. After extra time, they then went to penalty kicks to determine the winner of the gold medal. Neymar was up for the last penalty kick of the game and the score was 4-4. With one kick the ball was in the goal and Brazil had the gold. The first gold in Brazilian soccer history.

OLYMPIAN

OPINION

The most dominant Olympian... Phelps or Bolt? Zach Hoeflicker This past Olympics said farewell to two of the most dominant Olympians ever. Michael Phelps being the most decorated Olympian ever once again flew across the pool adding to his medal count. On the other side, Usain Bolt blazed the competition looking as if he was jogging. The two absolutely changed the Olympics forever and it had led to the question, “Who dominated the Olympics”? Was it the swimmer with a total of 28 medals, 23 of which are gold, or the fastest man in the world who won the gold medal in three consecutive 200 meter Olympic games. That’s for you to decide. Both athletes have strong cases that can be argued in different ways. For Phelps, it helps that he has more medals than any other Olympian ever. According to an article on Fox Sports Online by Chris Chase, Phelps has 10 more medals than the next person in line and more than two and half the amount

PHOTO FROM YOUTUBE

of Gold medals than any other athlete in Olympic history. “He broke dozens of other records in his career and in events like the 200 fly and 400 IM, he’s responsible for a majority of the fastest races ever swam.” Says Chris Chase. On the flip side, there is Bolt. The 6’5” Jamaican was said to not only be the fastest person on this planet but will be for a long while. Chris Chase notes,“Bolt’s marks are so unfathomably fast that they could last his lifetime, if not longer.” Not only does Bolt hold that title but he also accomplished what no other Olympian has done. He won not just three in a row but won the 200m in three straight Olympics which had never been done before. His overall dominance on the track is the reason that he as 100% success rate in the finals. He is nine for nine in Gold medal scenarios and is the most decorated sprinter of all time. So let me know what you think, who is the most dominant Olympian?

THE BEST OF THE WORST Biggest blunders of the year in sports Zeff Lewey As sports fans we come to expect a certain level of play from athletes and the sports we enjoy, generally speaking. We expect an outfielder to catch a routine fly ball. We expect a receiver to catch the ball when they’re standing alone in the end zone. And although we expect soccer players to flop hilariously, we expect goals to be scored on purpose and defended the same. We love the heroic performances: the game winning shot, a late inning home run, great defense to preserve a lead. Let’s not forget about another wonder sports provide: the not top plays. Sadly, these plays live on in infamy and are often cringeworthy when witnessed. With 2016 winding down, I searched high and low to find the biggest sports blunders from each sport. Here’s what I found.

HONORABLE MENTION

ELS FOR 6 Though it may not be funny to longtime golf fans, as they can be a lively bunch, Ernie Els had serious trouble sinking the putt on the first hole at the Master’s in April. Els tried and failed 5 times before sinking the magic number 6, scoring a 9 on the hole which had never been done in the history of the prestigious tournament.

PHOTO FROM ERNIEELS.COM

RYAN LOCHTE

Olympian Ryan Lochte was suspended from swimming for 10 months after his involvement in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro scandal. Lochte, along with three other swimmers, initially claimed that they were the victims of a gas station robbery. Video footage later revealed that Lochte and the swimmers urinated on the side of the building, and damaged their property. Lochte later recanted and was charged with falsely reporting a crime.

WRONG TEAM Jermaine Marshall, former Arizona State player, scored the worst 2 points of his life when he scored on his own team’s goal, with his team up by two, in a playoff game with seconds remaining. Just to clarify, he tied the game for the other team. He began to celebrate but soon realized the error of his ways. His team would go on to lose in overtime, losing the series.

PHOTO FROM BRIEBART.COM THE SOFTIE Game two of the Eastern Conference playoffs saw the Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals score one of the softest goals with a goalie present in the net. Jason Chimera backhanded a shot from near center ice while being checked by an opponent, but the puck found its way through the legs of goaltender Steve Mason, stopping gently at the back of the net and giving the Capitals a 2-0 advantage in the game and series.

PHOTO FROM MLB.COM THE SIMPLE THINGS Spain was already down 0-2 to Croatia in a UEFA Champions League game, when goaltender Iker Casilla came out to field a ball, but forgot to check for foes. A Croatian player swooped in, stealing the ball from Casilla, and proceeded to score an uncontested goal. Soccer blunder of the year. CESPEDES IN THE OUTFIELD All the way back in spring training, the Mets were taking on the Astros when A.J. Reed drove a ball to deep center field: the position Yoenis Cespedes was attempting to play on this occasion. The ball hit the base of the wall and Cespedes, thinking it was stuck, threw his hands up as if it were a dead ball. Play continued, however, and Reed scampered home before Cespedes bent over to pick up the ball. ISSUE 84 |

What’s in it for sports Ryan Meyer As 2016 winds down, the Kansas City Chiefs are solidifying their spot in the NFL playoffs come January.
