ASCC election winners look to the future

Vice President-elect Nathan Williams Jasmine Martinez Editor in Chief @talonmarks

STEM majors Kimberly Sayo, Nathan Williams and Valery Escobar won the 2019-2020 president, vice president and student trustee election and look forward to using the summer to prepare for their upcoming position and responsibilities it entails. When Sayo, president-elect, Williams, vice presidentelect and Escobar, student trustee-elect, found out they won the election on April 11, emotions of disbelief, happiness and overall excitement ran high. “I didn’t believe it, I thought it was just a joke,” Escobar laughed as she asked her friend, “‘Are you for reals?’” and started crying. She then felt joy, seeing as her and her team’s hard campaign work paid off and having an effect on the students who voted. Williams said he was already having a good time with

his friends and running mate, Sayo, and the news only enhanced their good spirits. Looking to the future, Williams said, “Some of the plans we’re [Sayo and I are] trying to do, we’re trying to make sure how it’s best to approach them. So we’re going to be spending a lot of time this summer, actually, sitting down [and] meeting.” He continued, “For myself, I really want to make sure to understand the rules that can, again, help coordinate when it comes to, again, facilitating [ASCC] discussions. Unfortunately, sometimes we have it where Senate doesn’t do as much, unfortunately, because we’re stuck on maybe one bill opposed to being able to go to maybe 2 to 3 of them.” The elects are adamant on actions over words. “I’m excited. I can’t wait until fall to see what we can do. [Nathan and I] are very hopeful,” Sayo expressed, “We just want senate running. It’s going to be great because me and him together have been in court and we have experience in every branch of government.”

To Escobar, being student trustee means representing all students on campus, especially those who she considers are underrepresented. “One thing I look forward to is knowing what are the goals of the higher-ups of this campus, knowing what they see and what they want for the campus and what the students want,” she explained, “If there’s any disconnect, I want to see how I can solve it, just to make sure that there’s a good bridge instead of burning a bridge between the board members and the students.” To Williams, it is important that the student body engages and gets more involved, but understands the sometimes demanding schedules of students. “One thing we want to do is actually have suggestion boxes in each of the individual buildings where we can then collect information from them,” Williams elaborated on hearing more student voices. Sayo acknowledged not being able to do much with legislation before the Fall 2019 semester but would like to see senators write at least one piece legislation each.

Protestors rally against white nationalism Carmelita Islas Mendez News Editor @talonmarks

L

ong Beach residents held a peaceful anti-hate rally in response to a scheduled free-speech march. The free-speech march was organized by a Facebook group with links to right-wing “patriots” and white nationalists. The United Patriot National Front’s Facebook event was later canceled, with only a handful of people signing up to attend. The anti-hate rally was held at Bluff Park in response to the free-speech march scheduled for April 28. The freespeech march “Freedom’s Safest Place” was organized by UPNF, which residents quickly discovered had ties to white nationalists and the far-right. Sophia Cleverly a Long Beach resident said that the march was her first experience in protesting and that she was proud of herself and others for attending the event. She said, “It’s so amazing.” Around 200 LA county residents were present with local Antifa and Democratic Socialists of America chapters also attending at the rally displaying signs calling for an end to white supremacy.

The event was peaceful with a heavy police presence. Cleverly believes the UPNF chose Long Beach to “get a reaction and come here to try to antagonize and say ‘we’re here no matter what,’ and to see them not come here after such a negative response shows their true nature.” Weeks before the UPNF’s event, Long Beach local businesses posted fliers warning the community of the presence of white nationalists and calling residents to “[not] let them bring hate to Long Beach unopposed.” Pasadena resident Ian Jameson said that the reason white nationalists and right-wing sympathizers did not show up was that they’d be outnumbered and said protestors would have “kicked their asses.” Jameson said, “We will keep coming out here and showing these fascists that they don’t run this fucking country, we do. We’re taking this country back. ‘By ‘we’ I don’t mean corporate democrats. I’m not talking about Nancy ‘fucking’ Pelosi, I’m not talking about Joe ‘voted for the Iraq war fucking’ Biden. I’m talking about money out of politics, pro-immigrates, anti-mass incarceration, actually anti-war [and] money-out-of-politics progressives.

Pansa Llena: Vegan Mexican food is not as CORNfusing as you may think

Taking the art of pie-making to new heights

¡Hola Pansitas! There’s a new and local place that offers great Vegan Mexican food. Vegan and Mexican are not two words that are normally in the same sentence, let alone in one dish. Guacamaya Oasis is a fresh and new place located in Downey on Imperial Highway. It’s in a small plaza but you can’t miss it with its colorful banner and parrot mascot. It’s a small but cute place for photo opportunities, there are two backdrops and a mural of parrots. There are many food options, if you are not about vegan life don’t worry, there are non-vegan options. Before ordering there is a small sign that reminds guest about the healthy ingredients used in all their food. The first initial thought was, what a surprise! The vegan food taste like normal Mexican food, you can not tell the difference. The vegan crunch wrap is filled with pico de gallo, guacamole, brand, lettuce, and soy chorizo. Portion sizes are generous and worth the price. To top it off you

You never know what’ll you find in your local community, it’s great that Guacamaya Oasis offers great traditional meals with a healthy twist. They also have vegan ceviche made with dried cauliflower, Pico de Gallo, lime juice and spices served on a tostada. Not only do they serve vegan food but they cater to every diet like Keto, Paleo, and Whole 30 diets. Since the food is healthy you can expect to pay above the norm but that’s shockingly the last

thing on your mind when entering the small restaurant. Reggaeton music is played loudly throughout the restaurant and the staff is quick and friendly. Overall it truly feels like you’re hanging out with a bunch of friends. When it comes to the eating habits of many Latinos, statistics show that minorities are at the top percentile for diabetes and heart disease. Personally, these diseases affect some of my family and are handled in a serious matter. More Pansa Llena on talonmarks.

Tech Talks: And you thought our oceans were bad... Christopher Martinez Sports Editor @chris_reports

Day by day we see the signs oceans are tainted, rainforests are being destroyed and millions of animals are going extinct. This is the outcome of the Human Race not taking care of the earth and treating it like a garbage bin that is now overflowing. People have talked of just moving the trash in other places, but people don’t realize is that we have already done that and now have 28.9 million pieces of trash, debris, satellites and Rocket Bodies above our heads at this very moment. If this is not a wake-up call to take action, then it is too late for humanity as we have not only failed to keep our oceans and land clean but we have propelled out trash into the one place even man has yet to fully explore our solar system. Although most of the debris is smaller than one centimeter and the largest being 10 centimeters traveling at a speed of 17,000 mph, it is the large communica-

tion satellites that are the size of a small school bus and weigh on average six tons. How scientists get rid of old satellites is determined by how much fuel is left and the distance away from earth they are. For the close satellites, scientists use the remaining fuel to slow it down so it can fall out of orbit and burn up in the atmosphere. As for the further satellites, scientists use the remaining fuel to project it out further into space requiring more fuel which in turn will eventually slow down and fall back into orbit where it will burn up in the atmosphere. Trying to clean up our solar system is a question within a question because if we can not clean up our own oceans how

can we clean up what less than 2 percent of the human race has traveled to? All the trash in our solar system cannot be cleaned in a day, but can possibly be thrown back into our atmosphere and burned or brought back down from space and recycled here on earth to create more tools and instruments needed for space travel. To stay up to date and have a look at how much trash we have in our orbit here is a link to a website where there is a live animation with all the trash and debris along with what company it is from and its orbit along with how long it has been out in space: http://stuffin.space. Pie for all: Pie makers a-like came out to offer their creations at KCRW’s 10th Annual Good Food Pie Contest, the one of a kind pies were well worth the wait. Oceana Christopher Staff Writer @talonmarks

Novices and professional pie makers a-like came out to offer their most sumptuous creations at KCRW’s 10th Annual Good Food Pie Contest, the line was long but the one of a kind pies were well worth the wait! In celebration of all things pie, professional bakers and home cooks were given the opportunity to compete side-by-side at KCRW’s 10th Annual Good Food Pie Contest on April 28 at UCLA’s Royce Quad. Participants brought out their tastiest creations with the hopes of garnering the attention of KCRW’s Good Food pie judges-a collection of Los Angeles’ finest chefs and food writers. With nine different categories of pie-- from fruit to savory, from custard to vegan, there truly was something for every palate. Set to a backdrop of beats from the likes of KCRW’s famed DJ’s Garth Trinidad and Anne Litt, it was impossible not to get into the spirit of pie. Participants ranged from novice pie-makers to professional chefs. Guests were provided with two tickets from which they were given the daunting task and opportunity of choosing two different pies from which they got to sample. The number of options was dizzying and mouthwatering at the same time. The line was long but it made the reward of free pie all the more enjoyable in the end. Participant and amateur pie baker, Kelsey Chaloux, said, “I’m from South Florida and I told

my mom and she was like ‘You have to make a Key Lime pie,’ so I made the first test run with her, then I came back out to California, made a couple and added my own little flairs.” Dave Holstein whose parents were bakers explained his Elvis Pie creation: “There’s a graham cracker crust, then a layer of peanut butter mousse, then a layer of banana cream, then a marshmallow meringue that’s toasted and covered in crushed peanuts. Elvis’ favorite sandwich was a peanut butter banana and it kind of came from that.” Husband and wife team Michael Sellers, carpenter, and Isis Okiwida, scientist, offered up two bacon inspired pies; the vegan ‘Porky-Pines Handpies’ and the Three-Piggies Savory Pie’ Sellers. For something a little bit stronger, Raquel Rodriguez made an extra caffeinated Vietnamese Coffee Pie “from Vietnamese instant coffee and also cold brew coffee and the whip is condensed milk and some more coffee powder.” Patrick Conlon a guest at the competition said, “It was a cool event because it was a rare experience to witness all the types of genres of pie that you otherwise would have no idea, what you could do with pie, so it was like an exposure to the world of pie, like savory pie is something that is not as common as traditional dessert pies.” Turns out there is a wonderful world of pie out there and KCRW’s annual pie contest brings them all together for one special day when even pie novices get to dine like kings and queens.

Bianca Bitches: Celebrate cultural diversity Bianca Martinez

Columnist @biancamart1955

Muslim model Halima Aden not only made the cover of the always creepily anticipated Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition but headlines as the first cover model to wear a hijab and burkini, and the cultural diversity train must not stop there. April 29 marked another win for body and cultural diversity, but let us not be dissuaded by imminent racist and cultural insensitive comments by lonely white incels. The comments written by horny perverts, who clearly don't know the difference between Playboy and Sports Illustrated, will run along these lines of, "Where are her tits?" The point is not about tits, sickos, the point is celebrating diversity and the religious beliefs of others. Think of the aspiring models who feel they won't be successful due to their religious beliefs, cultural heritage, body shape and skin tone. Due to this magazine cover, a generation will be able to look back and say, "I can be represented, I deserve to be represented, now it's my turn." It's for this reason that cultural diversity in public mainstream media should not be deterred and should continue to

progress. Barely last year, "Roma" actress, Yalitza Aparicio, became the first indigenous woman, to grace the cover of Vogue Mexico, and to be nominated for best actress at the Oscars. You'd think a country "founded" by and comprised of immigrants there would be more cultural diversity in the public eye. Alas, my dear ethnically diverse children, there is not, women by the name of Karen and men named Connor are still receiving the spotlight and represention. How much more representation do rich, white people need? I'm 100 percent positive that pawing through magazines where the only people being represented were thin and white didn't postively boost my self-esteem and personal perception.

Quite to the contrary, that bullshit causes impressionable young people, which is all young people, to believe they aren't worthy of representation due to heritage, the color of their skin or the shape of their bodies. So keep it coming mainstream media, even though it is only being done to sell more magazines or gain more viewership, keep producing culturally diverse content featuring culturally diverse individuals. We must call for more representation in mainstream media. We, as a culturally unique community, must not be discouraged by lonely racist bigots who leave comments on the Internet at three in the morning because they have nothing to do with their lives. The push forward for the celebration of different heritages must continue. Trust me, we are all tired of the same boring representation of some skinny white woman or man because that's what we have allowed mainstream society to push down our throats for so long. So you go, Halima Aden, you go.

"Cellophane" gives a heartfelt message of self-discovery Tiara White

Staff Writer @txwhitemedia

After 3 years of silence and a public break up with Robert Pattinson, FKA Twigs has returned to the music scene with a visually stunning single, "Cellophane." "Cellophane" isn't your typical heartbreak anthem, with an artist like FKA Twigs who is known to showcase a stunning visual piece to complete her sultry lyrics, she did not disappoint. The video opens up with Twigs behind curtains, preparing to enter the center stage as a faceless crowd applauds and cheers for the ethereal demeanor she presents. As she approaches a dancing pole, her face displays a completely different story of what her audience desires to perceive. You can see the look of despair upon her face as she puts on a performance that shows the strength, feminity, and grace of

the female body. She begins softly singing "Didn't I do it for ya? Why don't I do it for ya?" Giving viewers an insight into the deep pain she is trying to suppress while putting on a fierce show. We dive into Twigs' psyche as

"All wrapped in cellophane, the feelings that we had" FKA Twigs

she is approached by a roboticlike creature at the top of the pole that transforms into a replica of her face. She attempts to push the unfamiliar robotic doppelganger to

the side, symbolizing the fear of fully accepting vulnerability and doubts within herself, to only get sucked in deeper by the entity. The music video climaxes along with the melodramatic lyrics as she tumbles through a journey of falling, screaming and laughter as she is coddled with silk sheets, a symbolism of purity and hope in the midst of this cold heartbreak. "All wrapped in cellophane, the feelings that we had" has been speculated to be about the public relationship between Twigs and Robert Pattinson that endured racist and harsh criticisms throughout the span of the three-year relationship. She is cleansing herself of the hurt and pain while simultaneously changing as a human and enjoying the fall. Fans resonate strongly with the visuals of the tiresome, yet necessary process that is dealing with a break-up to be able to fully find the inner-peace that humans long for.

The Cerritos College Music Department and the Cerritos College Choir along with selected associated student soloist presented the 13th Annual Spring Sing Concert on April 28. The concert was held in Long Beach at the California Heights United Methodist Church. The lovely melodies soothed all ears in the nearby neighborhood and also those listening inside the church for not one penny at all. The event was guided by Anna DeMichele, director of the Choral and Vocal Studies Program at Cerritos College. The concert featured songs from many different musical genres. To name a couple that stood out,

the opera and jazz, considering one wouldn't think that those would be in the same concert. Selected soloist featured in the concert was a way to broadcast the hidden talent amongst us here on campus. DeMichele stated how pleased she was about the event and its success. She added that the students all did a wonderful job. Given that the soloist had to audition and didn't have to be in the choir, she expressed how offering students this opportunity is a good way to broadcast the hidden talent amongst us here on campus. Without the slightest idea of what to expect from the concert, the experience was delightful the talent was impressive. Voices that one would have thought to be heard in a Broadway musical. Each genre gave you its own vibe going from upbeat folk and traditional that made you wanna tap your feet, to songs from the Musical Theater stage that one is very familiar with. When asked what was her favorite song of the night, DeMichele said, "I love them all but one of my favorites is 'Someday' from 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' because it is a pertinent message especially for what we go through in the world today." Something that stood out at the concert was the fact that in the world we live in today with everything being recorded or captured, those that were in the audience did not participate in much of that. It seems as if the crowd was captivated by the angelic voices of the choir and soloist. One musician Weyling Elvir a member of the Cerritos College choir who when asked what was something that she took from the experience stated, "Preparation is key, at times while practicing way back in January I wondered why so soon. But in seeing how well we all did, it is most certainly worth it." If one wants to be apart of the College concerts, either on stage or in the audience, the Music Department always has events offered at or near the college. The next upcoming event will be the Choir Band Orchestra Concert, which will be held on May 17 on campus, providing the college and community with a fun-filled experience.

What about us? Churches harmed by hate

W

hy is nearly a billion dollars being raised to restore an old building as opposed to helping the people affected by the real tragedies? There have been over 26 attacks on places of worship since 2010, according to Religion News Service. Christians in Sri Lanka were recently targeted by terrorists on Easter Sunday. The suicide bombers took the lives of at least 253 people, said Sri Lanka Health Ministry. Where was the outpouring of funds for the families of the people brutally murdered in those attacks? It was non-

existent. The blame for the lack of money being donated significantly lies on the laps of the wealthy. Although, the media attention or lack thereof belongs to journalists. Journalists and those in media have a lot of power to shift the narrative in most situations. That power should be used to give a platform to smaller communities affected by tragedies such as the religious groups who were victims of hate crimes. The people should be a focal point in the American media spotlight, not a building all the way in France, no matter the

historical significance. The Notre Dame Cathedral went up in flames on April 15, its famous spire and roof were severely damaged, however, prime artifacts were rescued by nearby civilians. French billionaires, Francois Henri Pinault and Bernard Arnault really made a challenge out of the building’s demise over who could donate more money to help restore the Notre Dame. In total, so far nearly one billion has been raised from the two ultra rich Frenchman, corporations, such as L’ Oreal and common people as well. The irony is how many Americans who’ve probably never even

been to Europe, are so touched by the burning of the Notre Dame, while places of worship are being burned down in America. Three churches in Louisiana were targeted and subsequently attacked in March, by a serial arsonist. Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, St. Mary Baptist Church and Greater Union Baptist Church, were amongst those burned to the ground. All of which are considered historical African-American churches. It wasn’t until the cathedral caught fire that people then raised $1.4 million to help repair

the destroyed buildings. The reason a European building getting more attention than actual people and other places of worship being targeted by hate crimes is clearly and blatantly due to race and socioeconomics. If two wealthy guys can steerhead raising a billion dollars for a building, that same energy and resources can be used to help others who are actually in need or were victims of a hate crime due to their race or religious ideologies. There’s a simple solution, give more attention to smaller religious sanctuaries and groups, as well as help them financially.

The 2019 NBA Playoffs have been ridiculous and that's an understatement. Here are the Shmackin’ predictions for the second round, Conference Finals and Finals. Western Conference: Golden State Warriors versus Houston Rockets Whan-whan-whan. In a whiny rematch of last year's Western Conference Finals rematch, both team's are still complaining about the officiating instead of focusing on winning. This series isn't nearly as hyped as 2018’s faceoff that went to a game-7, where the Rockets lost at home. The Warriors look far more vulnerable, the only problem is the Rockets, do too. After Houston sucked the life out of James Harden, he has to be exhausted. It probably wouldn't matter much either way, because for the Warriors for a third consecutive years are stacked with All-Star up the wahzoo. And the Dubs have homecourt advantage. Warriors in five. Warriors 1 Rockets 0 Denver Nuggets versus Portland Trailblazers After “Baby Dame Dolla” flicked his wrist from deep and sent the Oklahoma City Thunder home packing, even waving bye-bye as the game-5 shot clock dwindled, it looked as if no one could stop the Blazers. Then they came back to reality. The Nuggets are not the Thunder, they play team- basketball. The difference in playstyle is evident in the way Denver's Nikola Jokic, a seven-foot center is able to rack up triple-doubles and drop 40 on a given night. Portland under Damian Lilliard and CJ

McCollum has been proven to be resilient, so this won't be a sweep. Although, unfortunately for Portland, the Blazers will only see game-6. Nuggets in six. Nuggets 1 Blazers 0 Eastern Conference: Milwaukee Bucks versus Boston Celtics The Bucks have had a dream season winning 60 games, led by potential MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and coach of the year candidate Mike Budenholzer. Sadly, just like with every really good dream, you wake up right before the climax. This is what's going to happen to the Bucks. The Celtics just have a more complete team and they've had playoff success, as the team reached the Eastern Conference Finals last season, without a healthy Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward. Now the team is healthy and ready to eliminate the Bucks for the second straight year. Celtics in six. Celtics 1 Bucks 0 Toronto Raptors versus Philadelphia 76ers This series right here is the most tantalizing of the crop, the matchups are heaven sent. Kawhi Leonard and the Raptors are a real threat to come out of the East. On the other side, Philly still has some growing to do. Joel Embiid when healthy is probably the best center in the game, coupled with a good supporting cast, the team will get a few wins. The only reason this series will even go seven games is because Raptors’ guard Kyle Lowry can't be trusted in the playoffs. Luckily The Klaw is crazy good and can put the team on his back as shown in the first game of the series when he dropped an effortless 45 points on the 6ers’ head top. Raptors in seven. Toronto 1 76ers 1

However our lead slipped out of our hands in the sixth inning with an error from Bolinas, hats off to El Camino who played great softball and won the South Coast Conference championship." When questioned on the improvement of the team Murray stated, "We need to improve on pitching and getting those outs early in the inning so we don't have a lead slip out of our hands. If we do make the playoffs we want to win as many games we can win so we can play for the championship. In the playoffs it is simple; if we win we go big and move on, if we lose we go home."
