SAPS brings smiles to faces
IDEAL LOCATION: The new regional mall aims to attract the growing affluent market of the south.

PARKING TOP PRIORITY: Mall of South will offer a three level car park. After a much anticipated wait, residents will now have a better idea of what to expect from Mall of the South as the launch presentation was held on 15 April at Hanger 50 at Rand Airport. At the experiential launch, where various aeroplanes were the backdrop, while airhostess themed waitresses offered divine and decadent food, a precise and crisp video presentation was displayed. Opening on 24 September 2015, Mall of the South, located on the corner of Swartkoppies Road and Klipriver Drive, will be the new regional mall for the southern Johannesburg trade area. An exceptional site in a rapidly growing affluent market catering for the residents of prestigious residential estates such as Eye of Africa, Aspen Hill and Meyersdal Eco Estate, giving them 65 000m2 of pure shopping pleasure. With an estimated R6 billion potential market spend by 2015, Mall of the South is perfectly
positioned to attract the high income, affluent resident with a taste for premium brand, luxury goods. A strong differentiation will be the glamorous restaurant promenade, a walkway providing a variety of new and exciting eating experiences- this walkway is set to become a meeting point and restaurant destination for southern Johannesburg. A timeless design element will be seen with combining natural finishes with crisp and metallic finishes, well proportioned shop fronts, double volume spaces and daylight streaming in from the magnificent skylights. The luxury pause areas with functional WiFi stations will be well appreciated by the shoppers. Mall of the South has made parking top priority as research has shown it is a major contributing factor when choosing a regional shopping centre. The parking structure is highly conducive to convenience with easy access and traffic flow taking shoppers into a three level car park connecting them to their
level of choice. Intelligent parking systems will navigate shoppers to convenient parking spaces. “All the traffic will happen on our property and will not affect the main roads,” Waldo Marcus of Zenprop told tame TIMES. The tenant mix has been carefully selected to reflect the needs of the catchment area comprising of the full spectrum of South Africa’s major and national retailers. Mall of The South also aims to host international brands and confirmed on launch day that they have Zara signed on as a tenant. Mall of The South will spoil their shoppers with choice to fulfil all their needs with the R1.8 billion investment where no expenses have been spared to create and fulfil the promise of excellence. A Note from the What a pleasure it was to see all the happy faces in Thina Sonke and Brackendowns when the Brackendowns SAPS handed out Easter eggs and lollipops at crèches in these areas (more on page 6). It made me realise that we take things for granted so easily. It was truly an eye-opening event. But on a lighter note, the Golden Lions rugby team will be in Alberton this weekend. They will be playing a Vodacom Cup match at the Alberton Rugby Club (page 16), this will be a great event for young boys to meet their rugby heroes. I hope you are all keeping warm with winter creeping closer, and remember to donate blankets and warm clothes to those in need. Enjoy reading!
Excitement at Alberton SPCA
Small shop turned into a national brand After owning an entertainment restaurant in Alberton for 9 years, Sally J’Arlette-Joy sold her business to take a year off. Her plan to relax was short lived as she soon realised that her drive to succeed with her business expertise was overcoming. Sally went on to establish and run a small sandwich shop from home, which quickly caught the attention of the Alberton community. After being inundated with interest in the area, she was soon informed that she had to operate her Sandwich Baron business from a store premises, which led to the business booming. From humble beginnings in Alberton North, Sandwich Baron has today transformed into a national franchise group that has significantly grown within its 18 years of existence with over 50 outlets countrywide. Sally J’Arlette-Joy is not only the franchisor, she is also the franchisee of the Alberton North and Germiston Sandwich Baron shops. Sandwich Baron has played a great role in contributing to Alberton’s local economy, “Our head office is based in Alberton North, and we support local businesses by using them as our suppliers,” Sally told tame TIMES. A remarkable lady has transformed a basic sandwich making ‘shop’ into a powerful brand.
ANIMAL EDUCATION: Alberton SPCA Manager Kingston Siziba and inspector Henry Agebite at the educational stand. The Alberton SPCA has gone through many changes lately. Not only did they appoint a new manager, they also have a brand new Facebook page. The old page was linked to a personal account and the Alberton SPCA had to register a stand-alone account. The SPCA staff and committee would like to thank Vanja Ingold for the wonderful job she did on the old page. Vanja was dedicated to growing the Facebook page and spent long hours ensuring that all animals were consistently featured. Their aim on the new Facebook Page, is to have new photos and additional resources to assist the general public and increase the number of animal adoptions.
On Saturday 12 April, Alberton SPCA held their first annual Easter egg hunt. It truly was a wonderful experience. They had two Easter egg hunts, each with over 100 hidden Easter eggs. Children of various age groups participated. They also had an educational stand, displaying various posters discussing tail mutilation, the correct way children and pets should interact, understanding doggie body language and the basics on ticks and fleas. The Alberton SPCA would like to thank Cosmic Bakery for sponsoring the hotdog rolls that were enjoyed by all.
SUCCESS: Sally J’Arlette-Joy and her team at the Sandwich Baron Head office in Alberton North.

Padwoede saak duur voort ‘Blits’ patrol in Ward 37 Na ‘n padwoede voorval op 9 Junie 2012 het twee families se lewens in een lang hofsaak uitgedraai. Mnr.

update
On 11 April Councillor Bruna Haipel, Ekurhuleni officials, EMPD, SAPS and CCA Manager Stephen Nowatha did a ‘blits’ patrol in Ward 37, targeting businesses and residential premises in Alberton North. Constant complaints from the community urged this team to do the blits. Incomplete buildings, illegal businesses, building sites
and other concerned areas were investigated and warnings or fines were issued where necessary. This was also an opportunity for Ekurhuleni officials and the EMPD to see where streetlights, sidewalks and other infrastructure needed repairs. It was a successful blits, and we hope the Ekurhuleni Municipality will follow-up on all reported areas.

Thaba trails
22 April 2014
Jackson’s Easter egg hunt
At the Southern tip of the City of Johannesburg is a large piece of privately owned land called the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, complete with hills, grasslands, indigenous trees and game. Thanks to Wendell Bole, who passionately built and maintains the Rietvlei Farm trails just a few kilometers away, Gauteng mountain bikers now have another safe, varied trail network to tide- Thaba Trials.
HUNT: Over 700 children attended the Easter egg hunt at Jackson’s Dam. Three trial options: Yellow: Beginners/novices Green: Intermediate level riders Blue: Experienced or more advanced riders Distance: Yellow 1: 6km Yellow 2: 15km Green: 22km Blue: NA Novice: 8/10 Intermediate: 8/10 Advanced: 8/10 This is a game reserve so don’t expect perfectly manicured trails, although the Yellow trails have a gentler surface. For Green and Blue routes, expect bush riding at its best – remember this is mountain biking, not gravel-road cycling. Riders like the hills at Thaba Trails because there isn’t that much gradient-rich trail riding elsewhere close to the city. This gives you some properly challenging climbs and descents, some long and winding and others steep and sketchy. Bole has ensured that all levels (skills and
fitness) are catered for at Thaba Trails making it a great family riding destination. Incredibly, it’s just 8 km from the Johannesburg city limits, but there are times when you are riding at Thaba that feels like you’re far from the madness of the country’s biggest city. There’s a coffee shop, a bike shop and arts and crafts stalls for non-riding friends or family to browse. The Panorama Shopping Centre is also across the road should your non-riding spouse/friend/ partner want a more commercial environment to spend time in while you ride.
Tyres: There’s a mixture of rocky and soft trail surfaces – typical of Gauteng conditions. A firm sidewall tyre is recommended. Best thing: It’s close to Johannesburg and offers a wide range of trails with some decent distances among wild animals including zebra, wildebeest, impala, blesbok, springbok and more. Best season: All seasons should be good here. Because of the gradient, the summer rains should drain well.
Directions: From the N3 (around the East of Johannesburg) or the N1 (around the West of Joburg), take the N12 and hugs the head south (away from the city).Travel 6.5km down Klipriver Drive. On your left you will see the Panorama Shopping Centre, take the next right turn into the Thaba Trails gate. Cost: R30 per person per day (R5 of this goes towards buying more game). Secure parking: Yes E-mail: Wendell Bole at bole@icon.co.za

On 12 April, Crossroads Church hosted an Easter egg hunt at Jackson’s Dam in Brackenhurst. Over 700 children were involved in multiple egg hunts, where over 7000 Easter eggs were given away. There were fun activities for the kids, such as jumping castles, face painting and a balloon sculptor, as well as an egg painting competition and a colouring competition. The Easter Bunny made a grand entrance and lots of photos were taken with all the children. An iPod Shuffle and an iPad Mini were given to two lucky winners who went into the final draw from the Easter egg hunts. With lots of food and treats on sale, it was a great morning out for the whole family. The additional Easter eggs collected from the Jackson’s Hunt will be distributed to various beneficiaries to brighten up Easter for even more children.
Blood stock levels in the red during vacation period
As the Easter holiday period kicks into full swing, SANBS blood stock levels is expected to be impacted. Blood stock levels become of great concern over the holiday periods as many of their regular donors are on leave. The constant demand for blood supply places the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) under immense pressure during this time. Traditionally, the month of April is a difficult time owing to the number of holidays. There are not enough blood drives and initiatives to fill the gaps left by the absence of educational institutions. SANBS needs to maintain a stock level of 5 days at all times by collecting 3000 units of blood per day and this becomes very difficult

Afrikaanse musiek word vereer Hidden dangers in common Easter treats It’s hard to imagine Easter without the eggs or chocolaty treats, but those with severe allergies are advised to always read food labels before tucking into Easter delights. According to Pharma Dynamics’ spokesperson; Mariska van Aswegen, if you can’t read the label don’t eat it – even if it is a product which you have eaten before, since food producers can change their manufacturing processes or ingredient lists at any time. “Food retailers may also from time to time import seasonal products or a different flavour of a brand, which aren’t manufactured in South Africa and therefore can’t make the same allergen-free guarantee as the products made in the country. For this reason it is extremely important to always read the ingredient list as the slightest trace amount of an allergen can lead to a severe allergic attack (anaphylaxis) which could potentially be life-threatening,” advises Van Aswegen. An estimated 3 178 800 South
Africans suffer from true food allergies of which 2% are children. Peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, gluten, milk, eggs, soya and shellfish are the most common food allergens in South Africa and are required by law to be listed on food labels. SAMA 20 to honor Amambazo and Phuzekhemisi

24 Two of the country’s most influential indigenous music acts, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Phuzekhemisi, will receive Lifetime Achievement Awards, sponsored by Amstel, at the 20th Annual South African Music Awards this month. Johnstone Mnyandu, better known as Phuzekhemisi, is widely regarded as the king of maskandi music. He expressed his delight at being honoured by the music industry with this accolade, saying: “I am grateful to those who still recognise my music – may they also do so to other artists who have worked so hard. Hailing from rural KwaZulu-Natal, Phuzekhemisi and his brother, Khethani, burst on to the local music scene in 1989. Sadly, Khethani was unable to fully enjoy the fruits of their success as he was killed in a car accident in 1993. Phuzekhemisi also received a nomination in the Best Maskandi Album category at SAMA 20, for his album KungakhoNilwaNodwa.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo who are celebrating an incredible 54 years since their formation, while still basking in the glow of their fourth Grammy Award (for their release Singing for Peace Around the World),will also be receiving a Lifetime Achievement award. “Being given the honour of a lifetime achievement award is like South Africa saying thank you to us for being great ambassadors of local culture and heritage through our music. We thank you, SAMAs, and we salute you, South Africa,” said the group’s leader; Joseph Shabalala Ladysmith Black Mambazo are enjoying yet another golden year. From 17 April to 11 May , Amambazo, a musical based on their story, will take to the stage at the State Theatre in Pretoria. And in August, they will head to the prestigious Edinburgh International Festival to premiere a Zulu ballet titled Inalathat, which celebrates South Africa’s 20 years of democracy.
