MAN OF STEEL: Henri Schoeman dominated the Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni African Championship. PIC: Foto Asylum. The Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni African Championship took place on Sunday, 1 November at Germiston Lake Park. Difficult weather conditions made the

Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni African Championship a hard slog but that did not stop Andrea Steyn and Henri Schoeman from dominating absolutely, winning the men’s and women’s races respectively for

the third consecutive year. Labelled the highlight race of the 5150 African Triathlon series, the event was successfully hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni for thousands of Iron Man fanatics. The

Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni African Championship is now in its third year. Those who did not participate were invited to attend the spectator-friendly event at the park’s beautifully landscaped gardens, which offered family picnic spots, as well as a children’s play area. The course of the race was flat and fast with a one-lap 1.5km swim in the crisp waters of the Victoria Lake, a new one-lap 40km bike course on the N17 and a flat, fast two-lap run. The lucrative prize purse for international and South African athletes was R120 000.

– PART 1

I can’t believe that November has arrived already. The ‘’Thursday’’ of the months, these days better known as Movember. The moustache has become the equivalent of the ‘’pink ribbon’’ to breast cancer and has generated over 1.7 billion conversations around men’s health worldwide. We had quite a scare at the office last week when one of our colleagues suddenly started experiencing concerning symptoms, resulting in us phoning an ambulance to take him to hospital. I would like to take this opportunity to thank EMER-G-MED and Ekurhuleni Emergency Services for their swift response and professional care. I want to urge everyone to take down these emergency numbers and keep them at hand in case of emergency: EMER-G-MED 0861 007 911 Ekurhuleni Emergency Services 011 458 0911 Netcare 911 082 911 ER24 082 124 On the topic of thanks, I want to thank all our faithful readers who take the time to phone or email us with some useful suggestions and good wishes. We are always happy to get input from the community. On page 6,

we have a letter from a reader who simply wants to thank a business for their excellent service. It is refreshing to get positive letters, instead of complaints. Tannie Trixie also wrote about how easy it is for us to complain all the time, so much that we don’t see how blessed we really are. Our pop-up store at Mall at Newmarket is almost done; it just needs some finishing touches from So Mooi, who graciously helped us to make it an enjoyable space to work from. We invite everyone to pop in and say ‘Hi,’ share your stories with us, see our sales reps for advertising, etc. On that note, shoppers must always be careful while shopping anywhere. Unfortunately, crime is a reality in our country, so please try to keep an eye open to observe your surroundings, while keeping your belongings safe. Your information can help security companies and the police to track down criminals and possibly even have stolen goods returned to the rightful owner. We wish all our readers a happy ‘’Movember’’ – please send us updates on your ‘’Mo’s’’ to monica.supra@ tametimes.co.za and help us spread awareness for the cause!

klaer self. Nou kla ek oor klagtes… TIP: wanneer jy wil kla, dink vinnig na oor jou seëninge.

Florentia was Alberton’s first real suburb. It was developed in three distinct stages – the original part in 1936, Extension 1 in 1940 and Extension 2 in 1945. For more than thirty years after the establishment of Alberton, the Meyer family actively farmed the land, right on the edge of town. In 1932 the situation changed with the death of Floris Meyer. He was laid to rest in the family cemetery next to what later became Fick Road. His widow, Sannie nee Coetzee, offered to sell a part of the farm to the Town Council. The old homestead and cemetery were excluded from the purchase. Sannie suggested that the new suburb be named Annville, in honour of her mother Anna Coetzee (nee Venter) or, alternatively, Du Preezville or Elizabethville to honour her mother-in-law, Johanna Elizabeth Meyer (nee du Preez). The choice of the Townships Board was Florentia, derived from the name of Floris Meyer. The original part of the suburb stretched from Truida Road next to the Natalspruit (across from what was later the Civic Centre), followed Du Plessis Road, turned sharply at Viljoen Road and again at Georg Road, past the later high school and cemetery, along Susanna Road to the crossing with Waldron Road. Most of the street-names can be connected with

Clr Kriek at an open manhole.

In Ward 39, Germiston, an increasing number of manholes covers are being stolen on a daily basis. Despite this growing problem the Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality has done nothing to resolve this matter to date. The open manholes pose a number of risks to the community including: • Serious injury if residents accidently fall into the manhole - this risk is particularly serious for the elderly and young children living in the area; and • Animals falling into the manholes. Some people also dump rubbish into open manholes, resulting in blockage and sewers overflowing, which poses a health risk to residents and a danger to the environment. According to Clr Kriek, the Metro must react much faster to replace missing manhole covers, as the open manholes pose a serious risk to residents. The DA demands that the Metro take immediate action.

Susanna Street was named after her, with Du Plessis named after her stepfather Hendrik. Floris Meyer’s mother was remembered in Du Preez Street, and his father Johan Georg, in Georg Street, next to the municipal cemetery. Brink honours General Andries Brink, who married Floris’s sister Aletta. General Brink was the owner of the farm Roodekop, where Alrode was laid out in 1948. Kritzinger Road was named in honour of Dr F.H. Kritzinger, District Medical Officer from 1931. In 1945, Extension 2, which is the tiny portion at the junction of Waldron Road, Susanna Street, Prinsloo Street and Denlee Avenue, was added. WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR PET

Parklands High School, situated in Parklands Avenue, Alberton North, is passionate about quality education in both the academic, as well as the social awareness field. In October, Parklands High School partnered with ABB to organise a concert for the Grade 8 to 11 scholars. The aim was to bring awareness of kids’ issues at schools - issues such as drug abuse, body issues, suicide and issues of disrespecting teachers. The concert made education a reality. Student attitudes and behaviours in many public school teachers also cite student attitudes, such as apathy and disrespect for teachers, as a major problem facing schools today. A poll from the National Centre for Education Statistics cited that problems like apathy, tardiness, disrespect and absenteeism posed significant challenges for teachers. These issues were seen more frequently at the secondary school level, rather than the primary grades. The concert did not teach children only on how to overcome these issues but also to change their attitudes and behaviours in situations. ABB is a global leader in power and automation technologies and is one of the world’s leading engineering companies with its technology leadership, global

We would like to apologise for any confusion caused by the letter ‘’Bekommerde beheerliggaamslid skryf’’ published on 20 October. The letter stated that parents do not have to pay school fees at Parklands. Parklands High School is a respectable institution and prides itself on quality education.

DIFFERENCE Meyersdal sisters, Athena (Grade 5) and Alexia (Grade 2) Munn have been named as finalists for Miss SA Schools, representing SAHETI School. It is a wonderful opportunity to represent their school at such a prestigious pageant, and to embody their school ethos – ‘To know thyself.’ The pageant is very charity-driven and aims to instil ambassadorial qualities in the finalists. The girls’ mother, Cindy, says she hopes the pageant will further develop and nurture their love of

humanity - to be true philanthropists. The sisters chose to fundraise for Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer. Along with a fellow finalist they became Cupcake Angels and hosted a cupcake sale at the George Bizos Marathon. In just over two hours, R3 500 was raised. Informative pamphlets titled ‘Early Detection Signs’ were handed out too. The day was such a success that the sisters have vowed to make it a yearly event. The Avril Elisabeth Home were the lucky benefactors of the remaining cupcakes, which were enjoyed by all.

Athena and A l e x i a ’s focus is purely on doing good, to lead by example, and be proud ambassadors of their school. They hope to be the change we all wish to see in the world. Sadly, dog poisoning in rife in South Africa and most cases involve a product called ‘Two-Step’ which is commercially known as ‘Temik,’ with the active ingredient ‘Aldicarb.’ Two-Step is what is known as an organophosphate which, when ingested, causes the nervous system to fail; if the poisoning is left untreated, it can lead to a very traumatic death for your pet. Aldicarb affects all the muscles, including the ability to breathe as well as affecting the heartbeat and intestines. Time is of the essence and ideally every home should keep in stock the necessary medication required for immediate action. This includes activated charcoal, which is available from a chemist or vet and a laxative which is also available from a vet or a supermarket. Two-Step is a black/dark grey granular substance a bit like poppy seeds and is placed in meat or bread and thrown over perimeter walls into properties. Therefore, it is always important to check your garden before letting your dogs out. If your pet has ingested Two-Step the symptoms will show in about five minutes and include some or more of the following: weakness/ paralysis, nausea/vomiting, salivation, urination and muscle tremors, to name but a few. If you suspect your pet has been poisoned you need to take precautions yourself and wear gloves to avoid contact with saliva, body fluids or other excretions. Your dog or cat will be in distress so may well be aggressive and bite. You firstly need to administer the activated charcoal to slow absorption before administering the laxative. Ensure the animal is kept warm and then take it to the vet immediately. Many pets die within 20 minutes. You will also need to check your yard for further pieces of poisoned bait but, again, be aware you are at risk too, so wear gloves. Once your pet is at the vet, a scheduled drug called Atropine is administered to reverse the damage and your animal will be put on a drip and kept for a day or so depending on the severity of the poisoning. Sadly, many dogs and cats do not survive a poisoning so it’s important you check your garden regularly and keep your pets in at night. THANKS MRS N WILKE WRITES:

There are people and companies in our Alberton community who go far above and beyond expectations to support initiatives in the community. La Fonte Hair and Beauty in Brackenhurst is one such company. We ran an extra-curricular “Matric Enrichment Programme” at our school earlier this year to assist our matric learners with further skills to adapt to life after school. The idea was to request a small sponsorship from La Fonte towards prizes for those who completed the programme. Michelle, you and your excellent staff were extremely generous with your sponsorship, which went far beyond our expectations for sure! The vouchers were so beautifully presented and decorated, which made it even more special. Thank you so much from all the participants who were truly blessed by your generosity! You are an asset to this community and we appreciate your gesture more than we can express.

IN CEO BUSINESS COMPETITION Lerato Mashilo from Thokoza, who is a student at Ekurhuleni West College (EWC) Alberton campus, won the 2015 CEO Business Plan Competition award and pocketed R25 000 in prize-money as start-up capital at the prestigious awards ceremony held at EWC Kathorus campus last week Friday. Mashilo was also awarded a trophy and a certificate. “It is a great blessing to win this competition. After all the training, the skills that l have gained l will use them to grow and expand my motivation business through my motivational speaking company called Moti-Vital,” she said. The first runner-up of the competition is also a student from EWC Alberton campus: Bongani Khumalo, who walked away with R15 000 prizemoney in start-up capital. One of the top three, Khumalo was also awarded with a trophy and certificates for the Best Oral Presentation. The second runner-up was Dephney Uguelo from EWC Germiston campus, who won the Best Innovative Concepts award and was honoured with R10 000 in start-up capital, a trophy and certificates. Victor Mathafeni from EWC Tembisa campus was awarded a trophy and certificate for the Best Written Business Plan. The floating trophy for the Entrepreneurial Campus of the Year was won by EWC Alberton campus. Robin Landman, director of the UK based company, Sisonke Partnership, which sponsored the competition with R50 000, said, “We have partnered with EWC to assist in skilling the students to be job providers rather than job seekers. We will connect the winners with our counterparts in UK. We also intend to continue supporting the college.” Joel Sekoala, executive director for Business Developments Peo Information Technologies, delivered the keynote address, urging the students to use BEE as a tool to advance themselves. “Before 1994 blacks were not allowed to participate in the mainstream of the economy. This BEE will not be there forever; one day we will have equal opportunities - hence we have to use the BEE to advance ourselves,” said Sekoala. He also challenged the public and private sectors to invest in the students’ businesses. “Funding is a challenge for entrepreneurs. Invest in the entrepreneurial capacity of our people and explore the capabilities of what South Africa can be,” he said. Sekoala added, “Everybody is born with a gift and we need to [unlock the] greatness in us.”

Din-Al-View CPF tip of the week

Don’t fall prey to

ATM crime “If anyone approaches you or attempts to touch the keypad during your transaction, CANCEL!”

Murder over Primrose SAPS loose cigarette successful arrests A 28-year-old Malawian national was arrested for a murder that took place on 25 October in the Makause informal settlement. Two men allegedly had an argument over a loose cigarette and ended up fighting. The suspect then stabbed the deceased twice with a sharp object in the upper body. The police received a complaint of mob justice and rushed to the scene where they found the community about to deal with the suspect, but fortunately handed him over to the police. Paramedics were summoned to the scene and declared the victim deceased on the scene. The police suspect liquor to be involved as the suspect appeared to be drunk. The suspect appeared at the Germiston Magistrate’s Court to apply for bail.

Cuffed for taking

friend’s dad’s motorbike

The Din-Al-View CPF would like to take this opportunity to warn its residents (Sector 5) that the holiday season is close and crime has definitely increased in the area. When you do your transaction at the machine, read carefully what is on the screen and follow the prompts. Do not select options from memory. Be vigilant when drawing money at any ATM. If possible, have a trustworthy friend accompany you so that you have someone watching out for you if anything happens. Look around you first before approaching the ATM. Identify any suspicious loiterers. If any are present, return later and check if the same people are still loitering in the vicinity. They may be waiting for an opportunity to steal from you, or may be passing information to someone else, using their cellphone. ATMs often have a mirror above the machine, giving a view of people behind you. Make use of it. Check the actual ATM before drawing or depositing money. Check to see if there is another mirror or any reflective surface that could be used to view the keypad from a distance. This is usually near the card slot. Also check for any additional attachment to the card slot – it may be a skimming device. Sometimes certain keypad buttons are jammed with a foreign object like a matchstick or pin. Avoid using this ATM, especially if the CANCEL key does not depress. Bits of X-ray film in the card slot can allow insertion of the card, but prevent ejection. If your card is ‘swallowed’ by the ATM, do not leave the machine without phoning the bank helpline – the number is on the ATM. Don’t draw money at an ATM machine if there is a long queue and the queue does not move away from the machine. When it is your turn to draw money, see that you are the only person in front of the machine. Stand straight in front of the machine. If the people are too close, ask them politely to move away from you; and if that does not help, take your card out of the machine and go and call the security guard to assist. There are security guards at most shopping centres and shops. They can assist with the

queues only - not transactions. If you feel uneasy while you are busy drawing money, CANCEL the transaction immediately and go elsewhere. Do not accept assistance from anybody, even if they are security guards. If you are not sure that you are safe, rather go into a bank and the staff there will assist you. It will cost a bit more, but rather be safe than sorry. If anyone approaches you or attempts to touch the keypad during your transaction, CANCEL! Do not write your PIN on a piece of paper that someone could obtain - and especially not on your card. If you are depositing money, ensure you have the money ready to put in the machine before you approach it. If you are drawing money, count it in front of you while you are at the machine and immediately put it into your wallet. Walk away from the ATM by a circuitous route, and check if anyone is following you. You can enter a shop and then leave immediately in order to detect followers. Keep your daily withdrawal limit as low as practical, e.g. R500. (Each bank is different, and has different limits available). If your card is stolen, the thief will be able to draw only that amount. If you need a larger amount you can change the limit at the ATM and, once having done so, decrease the limit immediately after the transaction. It is quick and easy to do if this option is available. Read the screen and press the correct button. If you have accounts linked, do the same for all your accounts. Do your normal banking with online banking or cellphone banking. This way you avoid using an ATM altogether. If you usually receive SMS notifications or requests for transaction verification on you cellphone, be very suspicious if you receive many calls that are cancelled by the caller. They may want you to switch your phone off in frustration so they can perform a SIM swap and have access to your cellphone messages. Stay safe and be extra vigilant over this festive season. The criminals are out there just waiting for you to make a mistake.

A 24-year-old suspect was arrested for stealing a motorcycle from his friend’s father. The complainant alleged that on 5 October, he was at home with his son’s friend. The keys of his motorcycle, along with his cellphone, were on the table. When he left the room, he heard his motorcycle being started and looked through the window to see his son’s friend riding the motorcycle. He assumed that the accused would come back, but he never did. The dedicated detectives of Primrose SAPS followed up on all the leads and the accused was traced and arrested.

Randhart se DROOMSEISOEN leef voort

Human trafficking is the forced slavery of human beings, and is also known as Trafficking in Persons (TIP) or ‘modern day slavery.’ These days, it is one of the most rampantly rising organised crimes around the world. This article will give us the FACTS about trafficking, and how these CRIMES ARE COMMITTED. We often see that individuals or career consultancies recruit educated youth from various parts of the world, promising them lucrative salaries and the fulfillment of their dreams. Later they can convert employees into bonded slaves by forcing them to sign a “contract.” In concrete terms, human trafficking means the recruitment, transportation,

transfer, or harbouring of people by means of threat, fraud, deception, or force for the purpose of exploitation. Victims are recruited, often transported; held in the situation through a means such as fear, force, threats, blackmail, witchcraft, or drugs and then exploited by converting them into forced labourers, prostitutes, wives and child soldiers.

TYPES OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING Human trafficking comes in many different forms. The two most well-known types are FORCED AND CHILD LABOUR and SEX TRAFFICKING. However, apart from these, there are other kinds of trafficking such as INVOLUNTARY SLAVERY, DOMESTIC SERVITUDE, ORGAN TRAFFICKING, FORCED CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES SUCH AS FORCED DRUG MULES, FORCED BEGGING, ORGAN AND BODY PART TRAFFICKING AND FORCED MARRIAGE. Legal or illegal ADOPTIONS with the intent to sell or exploit the child can also be classified as human trafficking.

Sex trafficking

Sex trafficking cases are very common nowadays. The victims are children, teenagers, or adults and can be male or female. They are forced to work as sex slaves within the prostitution industry, strip clubs, ‘gentlemen’s’ clubs, massage parlours and in the porn industry. Almost 80% of the victims are female, and about 70% of them are sexually exploited in the film, advertising and fashion industries, as well as private organisations. Girls and boys from poor families are lured from across the world, with the promise of a new life; subsequently they are sold into brothels and bars. According to recent research, most of the traffickers buy and sell women from Asia, the Soviet Union, South America, the west coast of Africa and Southern Africa. Girls who work in massage parlours and bars are often exploited sexually by the traffickers. They threaten the victim with harm to their families, or with imprisonment or deportation, and terrify them by confiscating their legal documents, like visas, passports and birth certificates. They are not allowed to keep in touch with the outside world, often have to face the rude behaviour of their bosses and are beaten brutally.

Child trafficking

Child trafficking is one of the world’s major problems. Every year, about 1.2 million children are trafficked by different predators. These predators bring children and engage them in factories, mills and brothels. It is the worst form of child labour as defined by the ILO (International Labour Organization). The predators attract the child and his family under the guise of providing employment, luring them with promises of a lucrative job and comfortable lifestyle abroad, and buy them for a large amount of money. Then the child is engaged into begging, smuggling, the drug trade, the military, circuses, beer bars, or factories as a labourer. As such, the child has to face tremendous torture physically, sexually, and mentally. Today there is a wide network of these cheats - brokers, owners of brothels, family relatives, friends, the police and political leaders that may be connected with this network.

TO PROTECT THESE INDIVIDUALS FROM HUMAN TRAFFICKING, WE MUST STOP THESE CRIMES. Since the network of traffickers is interrelated, strict measures MUST BE IMPLEMENTED to save people from human trading. These include effective monitoring and coordination between the Ministries of Tourism, Labour and Transport to fight this socio-economic problem. THIS IS A BIG ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE DEALT WITH USING AN IRON HAND, AS IT INVOLVES CHILD ABUSE AND THE DENIAL OF BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS.

What are the HEALTH effects of human trafficking? ‘Human Trafficking, Human Misery,’ a book written by Alexis Aronowitz, states that an estimated 80% of victims of trafficking are sexually exploited, abused or forced into prostitution, as most victims are young women and children. Victims may have to cater to anywhere between eight to 15 clients in a day. The use of sexual protection is negligible in this industry, leaving the exploited at a high risk of contracting various sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/Aids that they then

pass on to the men and their partners. In some cases, victims are also subjected to substance abuse by being forced to take drugs. Such individuals have to constantly battle with drug addiction. Improper supply of meals and the lack of nutritious food causes malnourishment in these entrapped victims. Poor living conditions also contribute to the development of various diseases that the victims suffer in later years. Trafficking victims also, obviously, receive no medical help.

Resources: Wikipedia, Internet about Human Traffic in the world, the National Freedom Network.

What are the GLOBAL EFFECTS of human trafficking? Human trafficking is an ill that plagues our society even in the 21st century. ANYONE can become a victim. Not so surprisingly, IT IS THE SECOND LARGEST TYPE OF ORGANISED CRIME IN THE WORLD, after drug trafficking (REF: STOP THE TRAFFIK UK). The effects of human trafficking are numerous and far-reaching. It is a thriving industry that continues to grow every year and it is feared that it may soon outdo the illegal drug trade. Every day there are thousands of people falling victim to advertisements enticing them with the promise of a better future. Or the victims may have been abducted, deceived or even bought from their own family members. They

are vulnerable due to a lack of education, poor financial standing or dreams of a better life elsewhere. Millions of lives have been affected. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) estimates that the United States receives an estimated 50 000 people annually who are victims of this illegal trade. The negative economic, health, psychological and societal effects are scary; and traffickers are the only ones that gain from this inhuman ordeal, raking in up to $32 billion a year. Statistics published by the United Nations reveal that as of 2006, only 5 808 traffickers were prosecuted, and 3 160 convicted, in the United States.

What are the PSYCHOLOGICAL effects of human trafficking? Most traffickers recruit victims between the ages of 6 and 24, because a young victim will easily succumb to force and give in. They are forced into heavy physical labour in hazardous environments. Many are taught to use weapons and are recruited as ‘soldiers’ in armed conflicts. According to statistics from the U.S. Department of State, globally, two million children are trafficked into the sex trade each year. These children suffer from lack of self-esteem, emotional disturbance, disorientation, and depression and are scarred for life. Child victims develop deep psychological disorders that they struggle with for the rest of their lives even if they have

been rescued. Psychological vulnerability hinders them from having a healthy state of mind in the future. The children are likely to become withdrawn and tend to be suicidal. In fact, over 71% of trafficked children show suicidal tendencies (Skinner, E. Benjamin. 2008. A Crime So Monstrous: Face-toFace with Modern-Day Slavery. New York, NY: Free Press). Any children born to trafficking victims who are forced into prostitution are taken away at birth, causing further mental agony to the mothers. In fact, the longer the victims have been enslaved, the greater will be their traumatic experience.

What are the SOCIETAL effects of human trafficking? Victims may be used as bonded labour in their own country or transported to another country where, on their arrival, their passports and migration documents are taken away from them, leaving them helpless and immobile. Sadly, they are often charged as collaborators of the crimes rather than being seen as victims. They are kept in poor conditions with substandard clothing and food, unhygienic living conditions and no provision for healthcare. They are often physically and sexually abused by their employers and ‘clients’ for non-compliance with demands - for hours and hours - in order to break

them. This is a very gruesome (but true) picture of the face of our society, hiding behind a wall. Another point to be noted is that victims are deprived of education and all human rights. The victims always struggle to gain acceptance in society from the stigma, after being rescued. Illegal trafficking often intermingles with other crimes such as smuggling of drugs and ammunition. Corruption is so widespread in our world that the greed for wealth only further encourages trafficking of humans to flourish, with no barriers. In such a scenario, the development of a stable and robust society seems like a distant dream.

What are the ECONOMIC effects of human trafficking? According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), human trafficking generates +-$31.6 billion estimated illicit profits worldwide! As calculated by the CIA, a trafficker earns up to $250 000 per victim of the sex trade in a year. Of this sum, the victim is paid a trivial amount or nothing at all, often on the pretext of paying off debts and covering expenses such as food, clothing and lodging. The victims of labour slavery are paid very meagre wages for strenuous physical labour, which prevents them from fleeing. Availability of cheap labour hinders employment opportunities and subsequently, reduces per capita income of the nation. The financial repercussions cannot be overlooked. In fact, the network of traffickers has gained immense financial strength which allows such illegal activities to thrive without fear of the law. Illegal immigration is also a threat to national security and a cause of

concern for governments worldwide. It gives rise to other ills such as terrorism, poverty, poor standard of living, unemployment, expanding population, wastage of resources, high crime rates, and lack of enforcement of law and order in the country. These factors slow down the economic growth of the nation. Victims are subjugated by the burden of debts and pressured into forced labour. Wealth gains from trafficking are redirected to legal activities by investing in businesses or funding public affairs in order to launder the money. Along with forced cheap labour, this creates unnecessary competition for genuine businesses. But, above all, the loss of valuable human resources is the most regrettable. It is an undue waste of productivity and development. In fact, it is a disgrace to humanity.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL ON

#FEESMUSTFALL

‘’We would like to express our support to the nationwide #FeesMustFall movement.’’ The right to education, including higher education, is a human right. International human rights law and the South African constitution puts an obligation on the state to progressively make higher education more accessible to everyone. By raising university fees without accounting for the decrease in access, the state is neglecting this obligation. The fee increase exacerbates the academic exclusion of poor and working class students. It may constitute a human rights violation and it may be unconstitutional. According to the Ministerial Committee for the Review of the Funding of Universities, funding per student fell 1.1% between 2000 and 2010. The tuition fees for students increased by 2.5% annually in the same period. Both figures are in real terms. The state budget for funding of higher education, as a percentage of GDP, is below the average in Africa. Higher education is integral in combatting poverty and inequality, and it is essential for the full development of the human personality and for human dignity. A student activism movement has been sweeping university campuses over South Africa, climaxing in a march to the South African government at the Union Buildings on 23 October. The protesters hurled stones at the police guarding the Union Buildings and a few pushed through the cordon. In return, police fired teargas, stun grenades and used a water cannon on the crowd, causing protesters to run into the CBD where they proceeded to torch and overturn a number of police vehicles. Not since the Soweto Uprising in 1976 have this many youth arisen to demand the right to quality ad accessible education. The outrage came after the planned fee increases of up to 11.5% was announced, sparking ongoing demonstrations demanding a 0% increase in tuition fees, which the students have won. However, with the demonstrations still going strong, the students’ demands have shifted to ‘’decolonisation’’ and ‘’transformation’’ of higher education institutions.

Disgruntled students at the University of Limpopo vandalised multimillion-rand campus infrastructure and pelted motorists with stones on Monday evening. The violent protest erupted after students locked officials in minutes after they were addressed by the university’s principal and vicechancellor Prof Maahlo Mokgalong. Before they were addressed they shouted “Fees must fall” peacefully on campus, demanding that education be made accessible to all. Dressed in the regalia of different political parties, they chanted, “We are for free education” and sang struggle songs, saying they were united to end education injustice. Officials ran to the offices for safety as protesting students demanded that the institution assure them of free education. Students had halted examinations demanding that Mokgalong and his management must find a solution to

the unfolding #FeesMustFall problem and their demand for free education. The explanations were seemingly not welcomed by the student leaders, who warned that if he failed to give a satisfactory response they would turn the university upside down. They blockaded the main entrance with paving bricks and rubble from concrete dustbins, barring officials from leaving the campus. During the clash some students were injured when they began hurling stones at riot police. The vice-chancellor started his address by acknowledging that students had genuine demands over free, quality higher education; but refused to enter into an agreement with the students, saying that the issue had already been escalated. “This is a national agenda - just like a no-fee agenda, it will be addressed by the president of the country who has established a committee to consider options in this regard, and

they will make recommendations,” said Mokgalong. The task team established by the president will also look at the issue of ‘black debt.’ However, there was a fight among the students over how to spend the (at least) R48 000 given to them as lunch money for the controversial Friday 23 October march to the Union Buildings. Students questioned management, demanding answers on how the funds allocated to the twenty buses which ferried the students were spent. University spokesman Kgalema Mohuba confirmed the existence of damage, but said they were still determining its extent. Police had to use teargas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesting students and Mokgalong told students that it was not even university money that was being used, but did not explain the source of the funds.

HISTORY MADE AT RWC 2015

The winning team, New Zealand (www.standard.co.uk)

(www.planetrugby.com) The Rugby World Cup 2015 offered rugby at its best this year, with quite a few surprises, especially for Springbok supporters. The first, and certainly biggest, upset in the Rugby World Cup series, was South Africa’s opening match against Japan, which we lost with a score of 34-32. The come-back was huge with a 40-point win against Samoa, restoring some faith in the team, followed by a win against Scotland with a score of 34-16.

South Africa ran over the USA, scoring 64 points, leaving the opposing team no room to score. A spectacular performance by Bryan Habana placed him in the running for the leading try-scorer in World Cup history, along with the legendary New Zealand player, Jonah Lomu. The quarter-final match against Wales was nerve-wracking for spectators, but the Springboks managed to secure a place in the semi-final with a score of 23-19. Unfortunately, South Africa’s chance of

The nation was devastated by the two-point loss against the team that has dominated the tournament since the beginning. second time, and bowed out captaining the team that took home the bronze medal after a long and tiring tournament, when South Africa beat Argentina with 24 points to 13. In the ultimate battle between New Zealand and Australia on Saturday, the defending champions became the first team in history to earn a back-to-back title of World Cup Champions. New Zealand played a spectacular game of rugby at Twickenham on 31 October, assuring them the title with a finishing score of 31-17.
