I still remember my matric farewell. Months of planning went into everything. Searching for the perfect dress, hair trials, deciding what to do with my nails. Finding a date, car, planning the after-party. All those things that go into planning the perfect evening to commemorate the end of your school career, name it, it was done. Every year, we get swamped with photos of matric farewells. It’s easy to complain about my inbox being flooded, but I have to admit that I really enjoy looking at all the photos. There’s something oddly satisfying to see how the months of planning by the students have paid off, just before they take on the biggest (yes, even bigger than the matric farewell) event of their school careers, the dreaded final exams. To all the matrics writing, we wish you the best of luck. It seems like a royal pain now, but when you see your name in the newspaper, or you get that SMS to let you know that you have passed, you know that the 12 years you spent complaining have paid off and you have your entire future to look forward to. Not to scare anyone, but Jiddu Krishnamurti (a speaker and writer on philosophical and spiritual subjects) spoke the truth when he
said that there is no end to education. It is not that you read a b o o k , pass an exam, and finish with education. The whole of life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning. That saying that you learn something new every day is 100% correct. If you lie down in bed every night and think about it, there is not a single day that you didn’t learn something. Whether it was something you read, something you were told, or observing your surroundings, there is always something to be learned every day. However, always remember the following quote from Soren Kierkegaard: ‘’Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced.’’

SOG KEEPS SAFETY IN CHECK AT MALL AT NEWMARKET PRIMROSE SAPS The Special Operations Group (SOG) who specialises in armed response, high risk escorts, close protection, crowd management, special response teams, specialised training, risk assessment and guarding was chosen as the security company for the opening of Mall at Newmarket on 22 October. The SOG team together with the police ensured that the opening day was a success with zero instances of vehicle break ins or vehicle theft. This success continued throughout the rest of the weekend. There were however a few instances of handbags stolen inside the Checkers Hyper, but SOG confirmed that all perpetrators were caught and that all stolen goods were recovered. The SOG team were highly visible during the

DRUG DEALERS
NABBED
Members of the Germiston Organised Crime Unit arrested three suspects aged between 35 and 41 at a block of flats in Primrose. The police had received a tip-off about the place; and, upon their arrival there, they knocked on the door, identified themselves and asked for permission to search the building. The police found drugs, along with an undisclosed amount of money. Three suspects were arrested and charged with dealing in drugs after they were found to be unable to explain where they found the money and where the drugs came from.

Mag elke Matrikulant eerstehands beleef hoedat die Here self by hom/haar is in die eksamens.
TIP: wees dankbaar dat jou man persoonlike higiëne toepas!

70 years
of excellence
Uniclox Technologies celebrates its 70th birthday this year. Its longevity can be attributed to expertise and a commitment to remain at the forefront of cutting edge technology. In celebration of this milestone, Uniclox will be announcing new technologies and strategic partnerships over the next few months. The Alberton-based company was founded in 1945 as a supplier of precision clocks, with which many of Johannesburg’s iconic buildings are adorned, including the SAB building in Braamfontein and the Wanderers Cricket Stadium. Over the years it has developed into a results-driven technology company that specialises in automated, time and attendance, access, shop floor data management, and building management. Automation is key to the success of Uniclox
scheduling, to full access control solutions and building management,” she says. The company’s own Vision Suite of software solutions fully integrates all their hardware devices – from biometric devices and RFID solutions – into a customised, turnkey solution. Hislop says her father and his management team at Uniclox were very far sighted and kept a close watch on technology trends. “We also listened to our clients. We have a massive database of clients that we have worked with, across all industry sectors and for many years. As they expressed their needs, we responded and intend to continue.’ “Uniclox has always been a family-owned and run business and we want to keep it that way. We became leaders in our field due to our local and African knowledge, experience and clear understanding of some very unique
“We became leaders in our field due to our local and African knowledge, experience and clear understanding of some very unique challenges faced by our clients.” solutions. Today Uniclox has evolved from a trusted time-keeper, manufacturing and servicing clocks and employee time recording systems into a high-tech solutions-driven operation. It invests heavily in its research and development programme that serves its 15 000-customer base well. The company has partnered with landmark companies such as Ingersoll Rand, Sage Payroll, ZK Software, Softcon and Bodet, which internationally offer the best in hardware and software. Interfaced with Uniclox’ own Vision Suite Software, these products are utilised to find solutions to help businesses maximise efficiency, and profit, by minimising low productivity in terms of any company’s most important resource, its people. Founded and managed by the late CEO Raymond Noppe, the company is still privately owned, now with Raymond’s daughter Sophia Hislop at the helm. “Our 70th anniversary is a milestone for any company, especially in South Africa, and I am proud to not only carry on my father’s life work but to share his vision of being at the forefront of resource management solutions and providing our clients with innovative, automated solutions for all their resource needs, from labour management and
challenges faced by our clients. Nothing has changed. In fact my only regret is that my father is not with us for this next exciting phase of the company’s journey,” she said. Uniclox’s experienced personnel facilitate selection, training and installation in all major centres. Uniclox is the African distributor for Schlage hand geometry terminals, and is a Softline VIP Payroll business partner and Pastel Business partner. Uniclox Technologies, in addition to its Alberton head office, has branches in Durban, Cape Town, East London and Port Elizabeth and has just opened a new branch in Polokwane. Sales and Marketing Manager Derek Udemans says he is delighted that Uniclox is opening a new office in Polokwane. “Our managing director, Sophia Hislop, the daughter of Mr Noppe, the founder of the company, lives in Polokwane, so in effect the opening of a branch here is something of a home-coming. “We are all particularly excited about branching out in Polokwane because this city is a major growth centre that serves Limpopo province. We are offering our services to the mining, agricultural and retail and manufacturing sectors there which are growing year on year,” Udemans said.

It has an unique interior with the character of the racing culture preserved throughout. The Mall features a horse-themed play area located near the entrance. The food court is massive, anchored by various wellknown brands, and a ‘’once-in-a-lifetime’’ kiddies play area. The mall is anchored by Checkers Hyper, Builders Warehouse, Food Lover’s Market, and Virgin Active, to name but a few. Shoppers started queuing outside Checkers from before 07:00 on the opening

Many of our readers have expressed their excitement at seeing Nedbank, Absa and FNB branches at the Mall. The opening day was attended by many prominent figures from our community who were there to congratulate the Moolman Group, Rejem Property Development and Nedbank on an exciting new development, which already has further expansions on the horizon.

Goldrush Bingo races to the Mall at Newmarket
South Africa’s biggest Bingo operator, Goldrush, is soon to re-locate its current Bingo operation in Alberton to the Mall at Newmarket. This exciting new venue will feature a wide variety of electronic bingo games, a separate traditional bingo lounge and an upmarket licensed restaurant called “49’ers café bar and diner,” aptly named after the ‘gold-seekers’ during the 1849 Goldrush in America. The electronic bingo terminals provide a range of progressive jackpots and the design of Goldrush Newmarket will allow for patrons to enter via two entrances, either directly into the restaurant or into the bingo area where a welcome desk is conveniently located. Besides the sleek finishes, large screens will provide sporting action and more.
The Goldrush Group employs over 1000 employees and operates thirteen branches in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North West and Eastern Cape. The restaurant will open on 22 October and the bingo area will open in early November, once the Gauteng Gambling Board have granted their final approval. To add to the excitement of this new branch opening, a car will be given away in early December. The Goldrush group has, and will remain, a supporter and contributor to the National Responsible Gambling Programme. The Bingo area will be strictly controlled and will only be open to patrons who are 18 years and over. A zero tolerance policy will be strictly applied to underage gambling and the over-consumption of liquor.

DIABETES MONTH Every November Diabetes Month is internationally observed to draw attention to diabetes and its effects on millions of people. The US National Diabetes Education Program’s (NDEP) 2015 theme Diabetes Education and Support: Everyone Has a Role. What’s Yours? highlights the need for ongoing diabetes education and support among people with diabetes and those who care for them. In South Africa, diabetes affects an estimated 8-10 % of the South African population (approximately 5m people). Figures for the costs of diabetes management in South Africa are unknown, but 2007 US statistics showed that average medical expenses among people with diagnosed diabetes were 2.3 times higher than they would be in the absence of diabetes. WHAT CAN WE DO? Mushrooms can lower glucose levels. Enter mushrooms, a nutrient-rich readily available food for people with diabetes. The dietary advice for people with diabetes is: eat mainly the least processed, low-GI foods and that is exactly what fresh mushrooms offer: an angelically low GI that will not raise blood glucose levels. Plus, they will assist in keeping glucose levels low. Furthermore, mushrooms provide potassium while being virtually sodium (salt) free so they also keep blood pressure normal.
Let’s put a blaze in your business.

Running from Friday 21 August till Thursday 10 September, the Fair Price Birthday Promotion drew thousands of entries from across the country. Customers that entered the competition were eligible to win the grand prize of a sparkling brand-new red VW Polo Vivo valued at R150 000. Other prizes included a lounge makeover valued at R50 000 and a bedroom makeover valued at R25 000. Customers rushed to stores to make cash purchases or pay up their lay-bye accounts to be entered into the draw to win the car in the competition that drew widespread excitement. After a tense few weeks, three finalists emerged from the thousands of entries received. The draw took place at the new Fair Price offices in Ormonde on Friday 02 October. An overjoyed and ecstatic Joyce Ratau from Polokwane was the overall winner of the VW Polo Vivo. The runners-up in the competition
were Thabo Leshabane from Meadowlands and Suping Mokoena from Alberton. Addressing the large crowd that had gathered on the day of the draw, Fair Price CEO Dawood Vally, thanked all the trade partners, customers and staff for all their dedicated support in making the business a success. “It’s teamwork that makes the dream work. Fair Price has become a force to be reckoned with in the furniture and appliance industry,” said Vally. Vally also highlighted Fair Price’s vision to build a great furniture and appliance company and to make a huge positive impact on the lives of customers, staff, suppliers and the communities where they trade. “Fair Price will strive to continue to serve its customers with quality affordable products at competitive prices. A fresh design at a price, that’s the tick in Fair Price.” Vally said. Keep watching this space for more great news and promotions from Fair Price.

Grade 11 Hoërskool Voortrekker learner, a model with ACE Models in Alberton, P h u m e l e l a Zingitwa, has been named a finalist in the Miss SA Schools 2016, where she is representing her school. It is a wonderful opportunity for her to be a part of such a magnificent pageant and live up to her school’s ethos - HOU AAN WEN VORENTOE. The pageant is largely a charity-driven event that aims to instil ambassadorial qualities in their finalists. Phumelela chose to raise funds for ‘Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer’ and visited the St Francis Orphanage Home with the community council at Vories. Phumelela raised funds by selling cupcakes in her area. She also hosted an awareness campaign on 25 October at Meyersdal Spar, selling cupcakes for her pet project on the day. “Being a very driven young lady, she knows
what she wants to achieve in life, sets her goals and then gets them achieved,” owner of ACE Models Alberton, Bianca Biccard, said. Phumelela’s focus is always to inspire the uninspired, to lead and to guide; to help those who cannot help themselves in achieving their goals too. To look for the definition of inner strength, is to look at her. APPLY TODAY AND SEE YOUR
FUTURE TOMORROW A career in business today requires a different set of skills to what it did a decade ago. While there will always be a place for traditional qualifications, the South African business landscape is looking for individuals with strong leadership capabilities that can move comfortably and competently between all areas of finance, marketing and management within an organisation. “Education is not static and though there are other BCom degrees on offer, our research showed that there was a gap for a qualification that covers all these skills,” says Dr Hendrik Botha, head of institution of the Higher Education Department at Boston City Campus & Business College. “The Boston BCom Management Marketing Degree is a Bachelor’s degree that equips students with the knowledge and skills for career opportunities in the fields of business, management and marketing.” “The programme content, as well as the flexibility it offers individuals, has made this degree an increasingly popular choice with students because regardless of whether the economy is experiencing growth or not, qualified entrepreneurs, marketers and managers are always needed. With the global and local economy still in the midst of one of its most challenging periods, this is probably even more relevant,” says Botha. The BCom Management Marketing degree has been created to produce the kind of managers and entrepreneurs South Africa needs to take the country forward exploring
new opportunities and ways of doing business. Ironically, a consequence of these tough and changing economic times is that prospective students - both under-graduate and postgraduate - are seeking out alternative means to complete their qualifications aside from following the traditional full-time university route. Whether it be because they need to work while studying in order to fund their education, or because they are too far away from a suitable university, or because they are already in a career but want to further or change their skills set or acquire a formal qualification, there are students that need the flexibility of studying part-time. To alleviate the downside of this, Boston offers their degree with flexible study modes. Often a lack of support and guidance is associated with part-time studies, but needed to successfully complete a degree. Boston provides students with the best of both worlds – distance or part-time tertiary education but with access to critical support and help. There are students who take on distance education thinking they will be able to balance their studying, work and home commitments only to find that it is not as easy as planned, and that while course material is generally of a high standard – they require some form of interaction with lecturers or course facilitators in order to achieve the successful outcome they require. “At Boston this is achieved through an education platform that is enriched
by electronic video and online interactivity, which is supported by a countrywide network of support centres. These support centres provide access to computers, online assessments, Technology Based Training material, electronic library facilities, examination venues and administrative services. All students must select a support centre and are encouraged to make daily use of the facilities for the duration of their degree studies,” explains Botha. Furthermore, the college’s system of pacing studies interspersed with assessments has seen tertiary degree students working continuously and doing very well. Boston also conducts courtesy calls to learners to check on how they are managing with their studies, and its dedicated call centre consultant deals with setting up appointments and online queries about course material. The Boston BCom Management Marketing degree includes most of the important aspects of business, management and marketing, including business management, financial management, entrepreneurship, company law, economics, computer literacy, marketing/ brand management, industrial psychology and project management. Already, 2016 applications are open for a wide range of degree, diploma and higher certificates. Apply online now, with no application fee, to secure your place, by visiting www.boston.co.za or call Alberton 011 869 4540 or Bedfordview 011 455 4992 today.

The semi-finals and finals of the Primary Schools Matt Minnie T20 Knock Out series were held on Thursday, 17 September at Alberton High School. The final kickoff started at 17:30 and the teams that played were as follows: Kenton Vs Del Mondeor (semi-finals) General Alberts Vs Alberview (finals) This was a spectacular sports event, as the four teams played with passion and dedication. The supportive crowd cheered enthusiastically and the players took every opportunity to showcase their cricket potential. Comments coming from schoolchildren,
teachers and parents in the crowd included, “Go boys, make it happen” and “I am very proud of the teams.” Boerie rolls and colddrinks were served to the teams at half-time. Del Mondeor won the game against Kenton and General Albert won the game against Alberview. Thursday saw two good games and each and every player in all the teams enjoyed themselves, no matter what the results were. They are all winners because they played like winners.

BIG BAKKIE BUYS?
Eight Resilience senior gymnasts recently finished their competition season, achieving excellent results. Their season kicked off with a friendly competition on 15 August in Kempton Park and all eight finished in the top 10 rankings, with Katlego Masako finishing in the second overall position. The Central Gauteng Regionals were held on 5 September in Pretoria, where everyone showed excellent results, with Katlego taking the third overall place. All the gymnasts qualified for the Gauteng Inter-Provincials held on 11 and 12 September in Pretoria. Outstanding performances were given by all the gymnasts, especially Katlego, who finished in seventh overall position from a group of 28 and Callen Leeuw (who is nine years old and competing for the first time at Higher Levels) finishing 21st out of a big group of 59. All eight of the gymnasts qualified for the SA National Games which were held during the October school holidays in Pretoria. Ethan van der Merwe managed to obtain his highest marks since the start of the competition season, obtaining second place on Floor and third place on Vault.

LIONS MAUL THEIR WAY TO THE TOP
(Pic: enca.com)
Monica Supra monica.supra@tametimes.co.za The Golden Lions successfully defended their den and were crowned the 2015 Currie Cup champions after defeating Western Province on Saturday. The Lions had the home ground advantage at Emirates Airline Park (Ellis Park) and it showed early in the match with a halftime score of 22-10. This was certainly not the only reason for the Lions’ final victory of the season, for they had won all 12 of their matches throughout the season, claiming the coveted Currie Cup with a winning score of 32-24. No other team could stop coach Johan Ackerman’s squad from claiming their 11th Currie Cup title in the history of the Golden Lions. They also became the first team since 1996 to go unbeaten in a season, which made them the favourites on entering the ultimate test after a fantastic 2015 season. Although the Western Province remains the most successful Currie Cup side in history with 33 titles, after such a dominant campaign it can be assumed that the Lions will be the favourites to win the 2016 Currie Cup as well.
