Making a mark for the nation Stephanie Conradie
stephanie.conradie@tametimes.co.za Senior and disabled citizens were very impressed when they learned that they did not have to wait in a queue. On Monday 7 May the whole country made their way to their nearest voting station to participate in South Africa’s fifth democratic election. All around Alberton, residents rose early to cast their vote and let their voice be heard. Queues at Alberton voting stations were mainly short and the process was a quick one, but some queues were longer and took residents up to two hours to finaly make their mark on the voting ballots. At the Ekurhuleni West College voting station in Brackendowns, Presiding Officer Nomaswazi Mazibuko told tame TIMES that they were working hard to make the process as pleasant as possible. “The police and party agents are also a great help to ensure all goes well,” she said. Senior and disabled citizens were very impressed when they learned that they did not have to wait in a queue. Mrs Wilbers, a 82 year old resident also complemented the IEC staff, saying that they were very polite and helpful during the voting process. Elard Bronkhorst, a born free voting for the very first time, voted at the Jacksons Dam voting station, and said he was very
excited to vote this year. “It was more than I expected,” he said, “and all my friends were registered to vote and also very excited”.
tame TIMES visited various voting stations to witness history in the making. See page 8 for more.

Looking at the sixties Editor
13 May 2014
A Note from the
By Daan and Yvonne Grobler Sasol, South Africa’s oil-from-coal plant at Sasolburg, in the then Orange Free State, produced in addition to high octane petrol, a large range of chemical products. Because Alrode, the industrial township of Alberton, was so centrally situated for the economic distribution of its products to all parts of the Witwatersrand, the company decided to establish a depot there in 1961. When it was learned that the Durban-Reef oil pipeline was going via Alrode the obvious step was to consolidate all Reef depot activities at Alberton. The existing depot was enlarged, involving an additional capital expenditure of approximately R200 000 (at that time). Provisions had also been made for the storage and distribution of various chemical products such as paraffin waxes, alcohols, ketones and aromatic solvents. With the tremendous development of new industrial and residential areas in Alberton and the proportionate increase in the population, the building of a town and civic centre had become an urgent necessity. Although each district had its own suburban amenities, the Town Council had long felt that the development of a 40-acre stretch of ground facing Voortrekker Street, which formed part of the main Durban-Johannesburg highway, should be set aside as the future commercial and administrative hub of Alberton. The Town Council’s efforts in this direction had then culminated in the planning of a civic and commercial centre that would be a complete departure from the conventional design of civic centres. The new civic
Remember the old OK Bazaars in Voortrekker Street?
centre was planned to accelerate the lateral development of Alberton and to ink it with the existing business areas so as to form a composite whole. Alberton in the early sixties was a town of 40 000 people of all races and an indication of its popularity as an industrial and residential town was that the population had doubled itself since 1959. This ever-rising trend was the key to the present and future wealth and development of Alberton. (From Alberton, the home of modern industry) For any information on the Alberton

SPCA explains adoption process
What a great week for the Alberton SPCA. In the past two weeks they have had 30 dogs adopted and their new Facebook page has reached more than 1300 “likes” in a very short space of time, this has been a truly humbling experience for the SPCA and all who have put a great deal of effort into the page. The SPCA received a great deal of requests to explain how the adoption process works. Here is a simple guide to animal adoptions at the Alberton SPCA. It is very important that you visit the Alberton SPCA first and meet the animal you are interested in. Each animal has its own personality and meeting with the animal will help you assess if this animal will fit in with your family and fur-kids. Once you have met the animal that you would like to adopt, a pre-home inspection form is completed. The welfare of all animals are incredibly important and this pre-home inspection is a safety precaution for both you and the animal and allows the Alberton SPCA to check that you have the
space and facilities in order to provide and care for your animal. This is also a great way for you to engage with one of the field officers or inspectors. Once the pre-home has been completed the animal is sterilised, vaccinated, dewormed and is microchipped and receives an ID disk for their collar, all at a minimal cost of R550 (all inclusive). It is important to note that if, down the line, you can no longer look after the animal you need to take it back to the SPCA it was adopted from ( this is not always possible but
please inform the SPCA). What more is, when the SPCA inspector goes out to do your prehome check, if you have animals that are not micro-chipped and would like them to be chipped, the inspector will chip them at your property for R250 per animal. For any queries or questions visit their Facebook page or contact them on 011 907 1568. You can also visit them in Lincoln Road General Alberts Park (just behind the Lemon Tree Shopping Centre).

vehicle they were travelling in, a Nissan NP200, were hit from the rear by a Polo GTI. The two officers were admitted to hospital in a critical condition, while the driver of the GTI died on the scene. The incident is currently still under investigation.

The stab wounds are now healed, but the pain lives on.
In February this year, Gloria Shabalala (35) was on her way home from work when she was attacked by two males in the park area between Swartkoppies Road and General Alberts Park. The robbers took the money she had on her, and her bank card. Gloria, an employee at OK Grocer Jacqueline Mall, was severely injured during the attack. She was stabbed on her legs, arms, shoulder, chest and behind her ear. There was also deep stab wounds on the side of her head. After hearing her screams for help, a white

man came rushing from his house to help Gloria. “I still don’t know the man’s name, but I did recognise him as a customer from OK Grocer,” Gloria said. Two ambulances that happen to pass by that area, also stopped to offer help. They rushed her to the Natalspruit Hospital where she was treated. “I want to thank the man and all the paramedics who helped me, I am very greatful to them,” Gloria said. “I also want to warn the community to be aware of the dangers in the park areas. Be careful and don’t walk home alone.”

Mike’s Kitchen Lambton a home away from home
Ndu Ngwenya
@nduzo twitter.com
Established in 1972; Mike’s Kitchen, has all the ingredients to serve any South African family. Mike’s Kitchen Lambton has been servicing the residents in and around Lambton since 2011, building relationships and lasting memories for patrons and staff alike. tame TIMES had the opportunity to experience the traditional restaurant and its home styled offerings in what we came to understand was a typical family outing to Mike’s Kitchen Lambton. We were treated to a three course meal made up of offerings out of the really smart Devour Menuzine; a magazine styled menu. For starters the taste buds were treated to an interesting combination of favourite flavours of the Prawn Avo and Salmon Stack which is a neatly presented stack. The base layer is made up by fresh salmon slices followed by a creamy avocado and pea mixture and topped by pan-fried prawns and served with lemon. An interesting element of this offering, apart from the combination of flavours, is definitely the combination of peas and avocado – Mike’s may have uncovered the secret to get the young ones into eating peas. Reading through the Menuzine we came across a fact which motivated our main meal choice – 94 % of men prefer beef, but 60% of women will order fish or chicken, so we decided on beef. From the Heritage Menu we had another curiosity arousing meal; a prime beef fillet, topped with creamy blue cheese and bacon then
finished off with a sweet black cherry sauce. Once this meal was done we agree that Mike’s Kitchen is definitely the home of Kief Beef and generous portions. Dessert almost found no room but due to more wise words from the Menuzine; don’t trust anyone who does not eat dessert. We were left no choice but to try two combinations which promise to soothe any sweet tooth. The first combination was made up of a delicious Mike’s famous cheese cake served with full cream coupled with the Oreo and caramel Moojooce (Milkshake). And for the second combination we had the Bar-one dream coupled with the super chocolaty Black cherry and Barone Moojooce. Speaking to owner, Hennie Oelofse, we really got to understand why Mike’s Kitchen has remained a favourite for the South African family, their fresh ingredients, careful considerations on flavours and pricing came in high on our list of favourites. Mike’s Kitchen Lambton’s promotions menu features a variety of specials which are well suited for the family. Sunday’s Carvery Buffet which comprises of a starter, carvery and dessert all at R98 per head or the Daily Lunch Specials at R59 are just a few examples of some of these family priced good food offerings. Mike’s Kitchen Lambton is situated at Shop 16, Lambton Court, Cnr. Webber & Beacon Roads, Lambton, Germiston. FLAVOUR
Jak de Priester Young model hosts successful initiatives tot hulp van ons stad Tieghan, the current Intern for Alberton Figures Modelling Agency, has been a very busy young lady indeed. In April she ran a very successful free Easter Hamper draw throughout Alberton and the surrounding areas. The past week she ran another free draw – this time for Mother’s Day and all the special moms out there. This young model arranged three draws to take place. The first draw took place at the Alberton Lifestyle Centre on 26 April, congratulations to Angi who won the hamper, her son Cameron put her name into the lucky draw box. The other two draws took place at the Rocky Peak Spur in Brackenhurst and the Little Eagle Spur at the Lemon Tree Shopping Centre, both on 4 May. The respective winners were Katlego whose son Damian entered her and Hein Uys who entered his mommy. Tieghan would like to thank the Management of the Alberton Lifestyle Centre and the Alberton based Spurs for allowing her to run draw initiative at their various venues. Tieghan’s next endeavour is a community based charity drive to give back to the community, especially to the young and the old as well as the animals of Alberton.

(HEBREËRS 10:12-14 NLV) By God gaan dit nie oor hoe hard jy of ek of enige iemand probeer nie. Ek hoop die Paastyd bring hierdie besef dat vanweë Christus staan ons heilig voor God. Leef vry!!

the glen The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) choir was established in 2007 with only ten members – founded by the now retired Chief Superintendent Lehihi. Through the years EMPD Choir has developed into a formidable group that is now counted among choirs of long-standing such as JMPD and Soweto Choral Choir. The choir has grown to fifty members. The purpose of the choir is to play a role during Community Safety memorial and funeral services; to close the gap between the law enforcement fraternity and the communities they serve; to educate the community about the police environment; to engage in community activities and programs; to promote the Batho Pele Principles and to ensure the well-being of employees through music. Orphanages and homes such as Tembisa Orphanage, Mohau Orphanage & Disabled Persons in Vosloorus and Tholakele Orphanage Home in Kwa-Thema are some of the homes that have benefitted greatly from the choirs efforts in raising funds by organizing concerts and soliciting assistance from businesses and churches. Items donated included electrical appliances, blankets, clothing and groceries among others. Choral festivals are held annually with the aim of reducing the plight of these homes.

National Elections 2014 The 2014 National Election had the highest number of voters registered in South Africa’s history. 25.39 million citizens registered to vote, this is about 2.2 million more than were registered for the 2009 elections. The IEC also increased the number of voting stations since 2009 by over 10%, many of the additional voting stations were introduced in rural areas to decrease the distance which voters were required to travel to vote. ~ Advocate Pansy Tlakula, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission

Cantare choir on international standard
On Friday 2 May, the Cantare Children’s choir took the stage at the Ken Mackenzie Auditorium, on the Drakensberg Boys Choir School Campus. Their performance was part of the Music in the Mountains festival. The Cantare choir impressed and delighted the audience with the diversity and variety of their songs, which included a traditional African song, a song from a 1980’s film, a Katy Perry song, the beautiful Adiemus by Karl Jenkins and many more. Members of the choir doubled as percussionists, and three young ladies performed a beautiful ballet to “Walking in the air”. The choir, directed by Ida Strydom, has won many international awards and has proved themselves to be on par with the best in the world. They shared the stage with other top South African artists like soprano Zanne Stapelberg, The Drakensberg boys choir, classical guitarist James Grace, and the Jacaranda youth choir. The Cantare choir also has an outreach program in place and sponsors many young choristers from previously disadvantaged communities. These choristers were part of the Drakensberg tour and enjoyed themselves very much. “It was such fun performing in a beautiful place, and seeing the mountains” said one young soprano. The Cantare choir would like to thank their sponsors: Nu-Pay, Elite Chemicals, Promiflash t/a Bateleur, Y Venter, S Klynsmith. Being part of a top standard children’s choir is an amazing experience for a child. For information on how to join the choir or to make donations, please contact Ida Strydom on 073 232 0941 or Carlien on 082 257 1407.

Learning skills through fun On Saturday 10 May, Little Kickers launched in Alberton, at the Alberton Rugby Club, and what a fun day it was. Little Kickers is Soccer skills
coaching for kids aged between 18 months and 7 years old. The focus is very much on fun - a national network of informal yet professionally run training classes where enthusiastic boys & girls are given a helping hand to stand on their own two feet. Little Kickers classes help children discover the rewards of regular structured physical exercise, laying the foundation for fit, active and healthy lives. Valuable concepts like sharing; taking turns, teamwork and listening to instructions are incorporated in the activities. The classes also enable children to develop coordination, agility and balance and early learning concepts such as colors and numbers are gently introduced through football. “We do encourage the parents to do these activities with the kids, and it makes it a fun day out. All our activities have
hidden skills incorporated in them, without the kids even realising that they are actually learning new skills,” said Cristina Paul, franchisee owner for Alberton and Germiston. “We are also looking to bring in some rugby at a later stage”. Little Kickers would like to thank the Kaizer Chiefs team for the wonderful goodies they sponsored for the kids. For more information contact 079 701 8529.

Un ‘BELIEVE’able success

Mother’s Day was celebrated on Sunday and tame TIMES hopes that all mothers got shown just how much of an impact they make in the children’s lives and were treated to showers of love and appreciation. tame TIMES spoke to some mothers and asked them what Mother’s Day means to them.
“
The first TylaBelieve celebration fundraiser took place on 7 May at Thaba Ya Batswana and was an unbelievable success. Many families came in support of the miracle child, Tyla Thorne (5), who recently underwent surgery to remove a 4.3cm x 7cm x 7cm brain tumour. Eight women namely Taryn Porteous, Gene Riley, Adele Spear, Kerry Hawkins, Shelley Ferrari, Penny Broodryk, Desere Linden Mitchell and Noelene Philipps made this magical day happen. Jacaranda FM radio presenter, Paul Rotherman, offered his services as MC after he heard that an event was being organised for TylaBelieve. He has been following her story on social media. The celebration consisted of a three course meal, entertainment and an auction of a picture Tyla painted. The five-year-old cancer fighter hand-made diamante ‘Believe’ bangles that were sold. Promotional T-shits with the TylaBelieve logo on were also sold. There were fabulous raffles; the prizes included a wrap dress, LG TV, a Keengro garden voucher, three family photoshoots and a stay at Thaba Eco Hotel with meals and spa vouchers from Sinzinani Spa. Taryn Porteous, one of the organisers said, “We would like to thank all the sponsors for their generosity and support. Thank you to everyone who has supported Tyla Thorne through her ordeal and please to continue to pray for her full recovery.” tame TIMES spoke to Donovon and Michelle Thorne asking them how they are coping. “We were obviously deeply shocked and saddened by the discovery. Everything happened so fast that it was hard to process. Giving over your child to a group of medical professionals to remove a brain tumour was the hardest thing to do. We had to surrender completely to God and believe that Tyla had the strength to overcome the surgery. Our faith has got us through, together with the tremendous support by family, friends and strangers that are now friends,” the Thornes said. “The last month has been very draining, physically and emotionally. We
have good and less good days; days where we’re confident and positive, and days we feel fearful and anxious. As a parent you sometimes feel quite helpless seeing your child struggling and experiencing discomfort. We do however believe in the power of positive thinking and she’s definite proof thereof.“ They went on to say that Tyla is a strong, grounded and mature little girl. “She’s always been quite mature for her tender age but she’s really had to grow up throughout this process - and has to deal with what most adults will never have to cope with in their lifetime,” Donovon explained. “She too has good days and days where she battles with headaches and ‘not feeling like herself.’ She is experiencing some side effects of the medication but does not harp on the challenges. In fact we are not even allowed to ask how she is feeling - she has created that personal boundary for herself. She tells us when she’s not feeing okay.” “She has an occasional complaint about how slowly her hair is growing and that she feels she’s chubby (side effect of high levels of cortisone). Occasionally she becomes cabin feverish and just wants to resume everyday things like attending school, having play dates and jumping on the trampoline.” The Thorne family has been completely overwhelmed by the social media support saying, “We’ve seen the powerful effects of collective positive thinking.” They have felt so supported by all the encouraging posts that have helped them to cope during times of stress and strain. “We feel love, supported, amazes and most of all humbled.”
Kholofelo Chademanah, Mrs South Africa 2014, 2nd Princess said, “As a mother I have a soft spot for children, and if I can show one child living in difficult circumstances that their current situation does not define who they will become in future, then I know I will have made my contribution.”
NEXT FUNDRAISERS: 5km walk at Rietvlei Zoo Farm1 June at 9:00 Clint Kennedy Invitational Golf Day7 August.
Loreen Fletcher, tame TIMES’ Sales Executive said, “Mother’s Day is a time to reflect on my children’s lives. How blessed I am to be chosen by God to be their mother and with children there eventually comes grandchildren – little beings who enlighten your life and bring so much happiness. Best of all, with grandchildren, when you are finished having fun with them you can hand them back to their parents.”
TYLABELIEVE FUND, ABSA TRUSAVE 293570421 BRANCH CODE 632005.
Catherine Constantinides, director of Miss Earth SA said, “Motherhood is my greatest achievement. I am honoured and blessed to play a part in nurturing, building and inspiring a human being that will make a significant difference to this earth. When I look at my son, every day is Mother’s Day.” PHOTOBOOTH FUN: The Thorne family.
Chané De Kock, Mrs South Africa 2014 love’s being a wife and mother and feels “happy and healthy family relationships, are vital ingredients for success”.
Sgt. Lindi Moloi Brackendowns SAPS said, “A mother is a strong person that put her children first and does everything in her power to protect her children and make sure her children gets proper guidance and wish only the best for her children. My son says a mother is someone special that brightens our lives with her love and care.”

Back on the road Sonja Laxton completed her 81st Spar Women’s Challenge in Port Elizabeth on 3 May in a time of 57.12 minutes. It was not her best time, but for fans of the runner who has more than 70 national titles to her name, it was a time to celebrate. On November 17 last year, Laxton was hit by a car during a training run. She suffered multiple fractures, including shoulders, elbows, ribs, ankle and spine, and spent some time in intensive care at the Milpark Hospital. Many thought she would never be able to run again, but Sonja’s indomitable spirit saw her back on the road in less than six months. “It came as a surprise to me when I heard she was running,” said her husband, Ian, who is the manager of
the Spar Grand Prix. “We’d been on holiday in the Eastern Cape, and Sonja must have hidden her RAC clothes at the bottom of her suitcase, because we arrived in Port Elizabeth and she told me she was going to run.” Despite a swollen ankle and a still painful shoulder, Laxton was the third grandmaster to finish, well ahead of the 70 minutes Ian had predicted. Her daughter Kim finished in 16th place, in 36.13 minutes, and immediately made her way back to find her mother and escort her to the finish line. “I’m so proud of Sonja,” said Ian. “And the time she did is amazing, when you remember how badly she was injured.
MyPlayers donate R20 000 It was a momentous and joyous ceremony when Abraham Kriel Childcare (AKC) was nominated as the beneficiary of the MyPlayers Benevolent Fund. The official handover of a donation cheque to Paul Momsen, chief executive of AKC, on behalf of well-known rugby players from the Fund took place on 8 May. Golden Lions rugby players Robert Du Bruin, Franco van der Merwe and Andries Coetzee were present at the handover. MyPlayers Benevolent Fund was founded in 2013 and launched by professional rugby players in South Africa and is the official charity organisation of the players. Professional rugby players in SA consider themselves very fortunate in that they have the opportunity to live out their dreams of playing professional rugby. The rugby players feel that it is only fitting to give back and support communities who are less fortunate by donating funds from the players’ business to charitable causes around the country. The Fund made its first donation to the Chris Burger Petro Jackson fund last year as well as the J9 Foundation. This year, all 5 Super Rugby teams, the nine
