Hijacking on the rise Stephanie Conradie stephanie.conradie@tametimes.co.za Recently there has been a number of hijacking incidents reported in and around the Alberton area. The Gauteng SAPS have confirmed five incidents where a silver Mercedes Benz was involved, these took place in the Brackendowns and Johannesburg South areas. The Johannesburg Central Central is looking into the possibility that these cases might be related, the modus operandi as well as the suspects involved. Currently cases of robbery with a firearm, hijacking of motor vehicle and house robbery are being investigated by Brackendowns SAPS and cases of house robbery and robbery with a firearm have been opened for investigation at Mondeor SAPS. Another highjacking incident that made the headlines during the past week happened in the South Crest area on 13 May. Willem Bester (44) was leaving his property at 19:32 when armed robbers attacked. He was shot twice, once in his left arm and once in the right arm. The incident was over in only two minutes. The car was recovered in Katlehong 90 minutes after the attack and was taken to the Benoni Police impound. Willem was released from hospital over the weekend. His wife Lizette would like to thank S.O.G, Alberton CPF, all their neighbours and Netcare 911 who recovered their house keys and other belongings that were in the car.

Willem said that the car the suspects were driving looked like a black Volkswagen Golf or Polo, but this could not be confirmed. It has been reported that a silver Toyota Fortuner has been active in housebreaking incidents in the area. However it has not been confirmed if these incidents are linked to one another. Police are appealing to anyone
with information to contact the crime stop on 08600 10111 or SMS CrimeLine on 32211. tame TIMES would like to urge the community to be careful when leaving your house or arriving home in the evenings. Always be aware of other vehicles around you.

Protect your dogs from Distemper virus By Hennie Alberts Veterinary Clinic.
In the last few weeks we have seen a greater than the normal amount of dogs with Distemper virus. It seems that there may be an outbreak of the disease in the Alberton area. This is of great concern because it is a virus that dogs suffer greatly with and they end up dying, or being put to sleep, as there is no treatment. Puppies from three to six months old are particularly susceptible but any dog that hasn’t been vaccinated can be infected. The virus spreads through the air and through contact with infected bodily fluids, including nasal and ocular secretions, faeces, and urine. It can also be spread by food and water contaminated with these fluids. The first round of acute fever tends to begin around three to eight days after infection, where often the dog stops eating, has a runny nose, and discharge from the eye. This first round of fever often subsides within 96 hours, and then a second round of fever begins around the 11th or 12th day and lasts at least a week. Gastrointestinal (vomiting and diarrhoea) and respiratory (labored breathing and coughing) problems tend to follow, which may become complicated with secondary bacterial infections. Inflammation of the brain and spinal cord can then develop too, or can be a symptom on its own without nasal or intestinal signs. The signs within the central nervous system include a localised involuntary twitching of muscles or groups of muscles, seizures often distinguished by salivation, and jaw movements commonly described as “chewing gum fits”,
Majority of dogs don’t survive and either die or need to be put to sleep, a dog that survives distemper will continue to have both non-life-threatening and life-threatening signs throughout its lifespan. There is no specific treatment for distemper, as it is a virus and viruses cannot be treated. The only treatment is supportive care and treatment of secondary infection. Infected animals should be quarantined from other susceptible dogs for several months due to the length of time the animal may shed the virus. The virus is destroyed in the environment by routine cleaning with disinfectants and contact with sunlight. This is a very serious disease and no one wants to see your beloved pet suffer with. The only way to prevent this is to vaccinate. Puppy vaccinations start from 6-8 weeks and boosted monthly for 3-4 vaccinations and thereafter a year later. If your dog has not been vaccinated it is vital to take them to your vet for vaccination. A misconception when getting a puppy is thinking it is fully vaccinated. One puppy vaccination is not sufficient to protect your dog. If you are unsure if your pet is up to date bring their vaccination card to your vet and let them check. If you don’t have a card and don’t know the vaccination history rather vaccinate again. It is not only Distemper you are vaccinating against but other serious viruses such as Parvo (cat flu) which dogs can also die from. It is too late when your dog gets the disease – prevention is vital and the responsible thing to do as a pet owner.

A Note from the
Tieghan (front) with Alberton SPCA Manager Kingston Siziba, Acting Chairperson Catherine Rollinson and Melanie van den Heever, owner of Alberton Figures Modelling Agency. For the past two weeks, Alberton Figures Modelling Agency Intern Tieghan Griffin – Coetzer, ran a community based charity drive as her giving-back-to-thecommunity initiative. Tieghan invited the community to donate any form of animal food, blankets and books. On Friday 16 May Tieghan and Melanie van den Heever, owner of Alberton Figures Modelling Agency, made their way to the Alberton and Germiston SPCA’s to donate the food and blankets collected. They visited an old age home in Raceview and the Family and Children’s Welfare in Alberton North to hand over more blankets and books. The recipients of these goods were very grateful and congratulated Tieghan on the great work she is doing.
Finally we had a full week with no holidays, and it was difficult getting back into routine, but we made it. Unfortunately Alberton has been in the national news for the wrong reasons over the past two weeks. Hijackings are on the increase. More about these incidents on page 1. We also, once again, have great discounts for pensioners on page 12. Make sure to share these with everyone. We are very proud of the Golden Lions making it to the Vodacom Cup finals, see page 16 for the rugby article. We are almost mid-way through the year, which means winter is here, so do keep warm. Blessings.

SAB biogas recovery plant in Alrode
The biogas burner at the SAB Brewery in Alrode. SAB’s investment in renewable energy sources includes the implementation of a biogas recovery plant at its Alrode Brewery. This helps reduce the company’s traditional dependence on coal. Before discharging effluent from SAB’s Alrode Brewery into the municipal water treatment system, SAB treats the water using a process of anaerobic digestion (AD). This reduces the pressure on the municipal treatment system by up to 80%. The biogas recovery plant was developed to take advantage of the methane, a by-product of the waste water anaerobic digestion
process. This biogas generates around 10% of the breweries steam requirements reducing its demand for fossil fuels. This investment in renewable energy sources forms part of SAB’s strategic focus on sustainable development. The biogas plant produces between 30 and 42 tons of steam per day. In addition to SAB’s climate change strategy focus on energy efficiency and using renewable energy sources, the company’s efforts extend to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain.
Security officer dies in shooting on N12
TRAGEDY: The scene where the shooting took place. On the morning of 16 May, around 4:00, two members of Hlokomela Security a company contracted by SANRAL, were patrolling the N12 west near the Comaro off-ramp. They noticed two males standing next to a streetlight on the freeway. The security officers called them in order to search them as it was suspected that they wanted to steal cable. Once closer to the
security officers, one of the suspects pulled a firearm and shot one officer three times. The 23-year-old male security died on the scene. The Alberton SAPS have opened a murder docket and are investigating the incident. No one has been arrested. Sanral’s Vusi Mona said, “This highlights the challenges that we come across as Sanral when we are trying to safe-gather our public infrastructure.”

Election results require strengthening of civil society Civil rights organisation AfriForum said that the more than 60% support for the ANC in the election again underlined the need for strong civil organisations which can hold the ruling party accountable outside party politics. According to Kallie Kriel, CEO of AfriForum, civil organisations from minority communities also have a crucial watchdog function to fulfil in order to protect the rights of minorities. “Instead of being disheartened after every election, minorities should realise that the demographics of the country will always leave them marginalised. They should not pin their hopes on elections only,” Kriel said. This does not mean that an election or the important work of opposition parties do not matter, Kriel added. This is a call for minorities to do more to ensure their own future rather than simply drawing a cross every five years. According to Kriel minorities will have to take responsibility for their own futures by uniting in strong, independent civil institutions of their choice. These institutions should work for a better future, independent of party politics, in every walk of life. “It is empowering to put one’s hand to the plough with projects which
can be run independently. This prevents one from being at the mercy of one-party governments,” Kriel added. Examples of these independent actions include projects where local communities can take steps to improve their own quality of life, Kriel said. “It is important that minorities do not regard themselves as victims of the recent history or the election result, but that they become involved in self-help projects and support civil institutions of their choice,” Kriel added. “Thousands of people who each do something in their own communities to create a better future are able to make a massive difference,” said Kriel. No contribution can ever be insignificant.

The Innovator: Mark Sham
Laurelle Williams
laurelle@tametimes.co.za On his way to catch a flight, Mark Sham, ran into a book shop at an airport and grabbed the first book that caught his eye. Little did he know that, that choice will have a major impact on his life. The book he chose was Inside Coca-Cola, the story of Neville Isdell, the former chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company where he worked for 43 years. Isdell took the world’s largest beverage company to new heights during his tenure. Once Sham started to read this book, he couldn’t put it down and in his own words “smashed the book in two days.” He then decided that he will share the information with people and charge them for it. His first Inside Coca-Cola review started in October 2012 and last week Sham held his 16th edition of the review to a fully packed room of attendees. It sounds crazy that Sham started something out of nothing but after you leave Sham’s review you will understand how he succeeded. He is a natural innovator with passion and the utmost determination. He is infectious. In the review Sham explains the story of Isdell and highlights why Isdell was so successful, with it coming down to Isdell constantly doing simple tasks the right way. “When he was working at bottom, he acted like he owned the company and when he was at the top; he acted like he was at the bottom.” Sham also attributed Coca-Cola’s success to Isdell making the business revolve around people, let it be his staff, his clients or the

What makes Sham’s story even that more stirring is that when he had the vision of the review, he also had the goal to bring Isdell to South Africa. After a lot of strong-minded perseverance or as some people call it “stalking”. Sham got it right and he hosted Isdell in Cape Town on 20 February this year and interviewed him. Sham was honest with Isdell when he was ‘stalking’ him telling him he wasn’t going to stop until he got what he wanted as “that is what your book taught me.” The young innovator has hopes of bringing Isdell to Johannesburg and with his charm and sharp-mind, it is sure to also become a reality. Be sure to catch tame TIMES’ one on one interview with Mark Sham in next week’s edition where we delve deeper in what make Sham the innovator he is.

tame TIMES advertising pays off Roderick Greene writes: Thank you tame TIMES for the advert in classifieds, it looked stunning and was a lot bigger than I expected it to be. My cell phone has not stopped ringing and my mail had 10 responses. It is good to see that advertising still pays off. Laurelle, thanks for putting me into touch with Tessa Arthur.
No service
Mario Dos Santos writes: I am responding to the article ‘Koedoe Street problems piling up (6 May 2014)’. On 7 April this year I tried to phone Ekurhuleni Municipality call centre on 086 054 3000 to find out when they will be attending to the outstanding problems in Koedoe Street (water pipe damage, street lights not working and roads full of pot holes etc) and the phone rang for over an hour and all I got was a recorded message over and over again to say “PLEASE WAIT FOR THE NEXT AVAILABLE OPERATOR” after an hour and 7 minutes I gave up. That telephone call alone cost me R27,47 and I achieved nothing. I had to drive to the Municipality Depot in Swartkoppies Road, only to be send from one section to another. No one seems to know what is going on or is able to give a timeline when things will be completed and we, as the tax paying public, have to accept this terrible situation and endless excuses, yet every month we are sent a bill for rates and taxes but NO SERVICE. The problems in Koedoe Street has been outstanding since the beginning of March 2014 reference number: 1011480.

Inappropriate parking by Government Officials P’d-off citizen writes: I want to show you how inappropriate the Metro Police was on the morning of 14 May, parking on a corner. At first, both officers were just sitting in the vehicle, then both left the vehicle - one on his phone walking around and the other one walking in the direction of the liquor store on the corner of Raceview Motors and Voortrekker Road. We as public had to move into the oncoming traffic lane to be able to see what traffic was coming from the opposite side. When I confronted the guy he told me I should ask why they were standing there. My point is they were endangering so many lives by just parking on the corner while there was a perfect parking only 10 meters away from where they were.
Inappropriate parking by Metro Police. I’m so tired of Government Officials doing as they please. There was no accident or other vehicles demanding this way of parking. At least one would think they would, if standing on an illegal parking place, help control traffic and not cause obstruction (as the law requires).
Please be warned Concerned resident of Alberton writes:
I would like to share my story and warn people that this actually happens in Alberton. I went to Alberton City last week to buy a Mother’s Day gift. In one of the stores I was approached by a young black lady who randomly started a conversation with me. She phoned someone else, and later an elderly black lady, with a limb, joined her and they again started talking to me. Before I knew it, I was following them out the store and up the stairs to the upper level, as if we knew each other for years. There we were joined by a third lady. I believe that something they did or said put me in a trans as I was doing
everything they told me to do. They made me hand over all my belongings to them, my wedding ring, handback, necklace and phone then they left. I remember that I went back into the store and all of a sudden I realised that something weird happened to me. My mouth was dry, I was very thirsty and I was disorientated, I realised that I was robbed. I went to the Centre Management, but they wouldn’t show me the camera footage. I also tried to open a case with the police, but had no success. They didn’t believe my story and said I couldn’t open a case. I just want everyone to be aware that this is hapenning. Please be careful where ever you go.
Bringing back great memories Nick van Zyl writes: Beautiful article and photo of Alberton’s own O.K. Bazaars written by Daan & Yvonne Grobler from the Alberton Heritage Association (tame TIMES, May 13, 2014). If you grew up in Alberton, as I did, no doubt you may recall the Mother’s saying “The day an O.K. Bazaars opens up in Alberton, it will surely snow.” At that time all “Big” shopping was done in Germiston and the “Very Big” shopping was done in Johannesburg. Mother’s wore hats & gloves for these occasions, with “High Tea” at John Orr’s. Then came that day in July 1964 when O.K. Bazaars opened their doors in Voortrekker Road, Alberton. We all rushed to admire this big new store. Low and behold, two days later Alberton received a heavy snowfall. I recall going up to the new O.K. and picking out a fleecy new pair of gloves, to fight off the cold......the cost was R0.89c. No VAT, no charge for the plastic bag.

“Nee man by die see gaan die sand net oral in,” sal Gysie my toesnou.

Make your salary work for you
You’ve dedicated many years to studying and worked hard towards qualifying for your profession. Now you’re ready to go out and conquer the world. But, after all that effort, it’s imperative to make sure that your money works just as hard as you do. Know exactly how much you’re earning There are few things as challenging and exciting as negotiating your first pay package, but many of us make the mistake of getting stuck on the gross income offered to us. It is very important to take into account all benefits and deductions before signing on the dotted line. Not all employers offer fringe benefits like cellphone and travel allowances as a stand-alone benefit, these items are often calculated as part of your gross salary package. Expenses such as pension fund contributions and medical aid also have an effect on your take-home pay, not to mention the fact that the largest deduction of all goes towards tax! When negotiating your salary package, ask the HR department to give you a detailed monthly breakdown of all expenses and benefits – a sample salary slip as it were. And, if you want to avoid nasty surprises, make sure you know what your tax bracket will be. Only then should you factor your net salary into your budget to ensure that you can comfortably afford your expenses. Remember to also consider any additional expenses you would like to include in the near future, such as bond payments, vehicle financing, or augmenting your retirement savings. Create real wealth – Save, save, save Many of us view our salary as a means to live a comfortable life, but your earnings is your first tool to create future wealth. Once you know exactly how much disposable income you have every month, consult an accredited and qualified financial adviser to find out about suitable savings vehicles. Even if you only putting aside a small amount in the beginning, every little bit helps! Carefully consider various saving options for different purposes. You may have short-term savings goals, like a dream holiday, mediumterm savings goals like a deposit on a house, and long-term savings goals like planning for your retirement. Retirement planning is not just a long-term benefit Although retirement may seem like a lifetime away to a young graduate starting to build a career, the financial choices you make when you’re young can determine your quality of life in old age. .. So investing wisely can result in substantial tax savings.

Credit amnesty:
consumers must still pay debts The removal of adverse consumer credit information and information relating to paid up judgments, commonly referred to as the “credit amnesty”, came into effect on 1 April 2014. This meant that from 1 April 2014, all registered credit bureaus (listed below) should remove adverse consumer credit information on their systems for a period of two months until the end of May 2014. The adverse consumer credit information that credit bureaus needed to remove from 1 April 2014 includes: • Subjective classifications of consumer behaviour such as: delinquent, default, slow paying, absconded or not contactable; • The adverse classification of enforcement action, i.e. those that are related to enforcement action taken by credit providers including classifications such as: handed over for collection or recovery, legal action or write off; • Details and results of disputes lodged by consumers irrespective of the outcome of such disputes; and • Adverse consumer credit information contained in the payment profile represented by means of any mark, symbol, sign or in any manner or form. “Paid up judgments, which means civil court judgment debts, including default judgments where the consumer has settled the judgment debt, should also be removed from the credit bureau records from 1 April 2014,” Nomsa Motshegare, CEO of the National Credit Regulator (NCR) said. Where a consumer has paid the judgment debt, the credit provider must notify the credit bureau of this within seven days of receiving the payment. The credit bureau must remove that judgment from the consumer’s credit record within seven days of receiving proof of payment. The consumer no longer has to apply to a court to rescind the judgment so that it can be removed from his/her credit record. “This will save consumers a lot of money that they could have paid to lawyers,” Motshegare added. From 1 April 2014 until the end of May 2014, credit bureaus must not display this information on consumers’ credit records. Motshegare stresses that consumers are,
however, still liable to pay their debts. Motshegare said there has been confusion and misconceptions around the process. “We have also found that some consumers don’t know where and how to get a copy of their credit reports”, she said. Below, Motshegare shares common misconceptions about removal of adverse consumer credit information and information relating to paid up judgments: • It is a credit amnesty and it will wipe out their debt (they are no longer obligated to pay the debt); NCR response – Consumers must pay their debts. • The payment profile will be removed and they will start on a clean slate; NCR response – The payment profile will remain on the consumer’s credit bureau records. • When the credit bureaus have removed the consumer’s adverse or paid up judgment(s), the consumer’s name will no longer appear at the credit bureausNCR response - Consumers must realise that every person who has an account anywhere in South Africa with a credit or service provider, who makes use of credit bureau services, will find the information about the account is recorded with a credit bureau, irrespective of whether the account is paid regularly or not. • After the information is removed, they will automatically get creditNCR response – That is not so, credit providers are required to conduct an affordability assessment before granting credit. • You pay an extra fee to get the information removed in terms of this process over and above your debt-NCR response – The removal of adverse consumer credit information and information relating to paid up judgments is automatic and free. In conclusion, Motshegare advised consumers to contact the National Credit Regulator or the Credit Ombud for any clarity or assistance. She further advised consumers to contact the credit bureaus for a copy of their credit reports.

Goue Leeus nederlaag Stephanie Conradie
stephanie.conradie@tametimes.co.za
Ready for Cross-Country Genevieve Van Coller (16), the current youth Marathon champion, will be trying her legs in the SA Mountain Bike XCO and Downhill Championships this year for the first time. The Limpopo rider was spotted at Thaba Trails last week getting some practise in and familiar with the course. She said Cross-Country is a lot more technical but she is up for the challenge. Van Coller will still compete in Marathon events.
CHALLENGING HERSELF: Genevieve Van Coller.
Astro turf at Alberton Football Club Die Goue Leeus spelers het wel goeie verdediging uitgevoer.
Die resultaat hiervan was twee verdoelde drieë. Die Leeus kon egter nie daarin slaag op enige punte in die tweede helfte aan te teken nie en het die Griquas
Course been designed for XCO
One of the six purpose built rocky challenges to be found on the 4,5 km XCO course at Thaba Trails. The SA Mountain Bike XCO and Downhill Championships are held annually on a rotation basis throughout South Africa and 2014 is the year for Gauteng to be the host province and Thaba Trails in the South of Johannesburg is the Championship venue. Thaba Trails situated at 101 Klipriver Drive, Mulbarton on the land privately owned by Thaba Ya Batswana. The XCO distances for
UCI racing can be between 4km and 6km. At Thaba Trails a challenging 4,5km course is being designed to challenge the most skilled riders. There are six technical drop-offs that give riders an adrenaline rush and are of difficulty levels that will be up to expectations of international riders from all corners of the world. Entirely single track- the course can really be classed as real Cross-Country. There can be no

All CSA licensed riders are eligible to participate with rider categories from Under 14 to 60 plus years old. Entries will be opened on the Cycling South Africa web page shortly.
