Ekurhuleni Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Clr Dora Mlambo is surrounded by junior golfers from various golf development clubs after an exciting nine-hole game at the Reading Country Club in Alberton. Stepping on to a golf course for the very first time erased all the dull memories of playing with sticks and stones on dusty township playing fields for a group of aspiring junior golfers. Last week, the City of Ekurhuleni responded to the need to make golf a sport in which even children residing in previously disadvantaged communities can participate. Over 80 junior golfers between the ages of 5 and 16 converged on the Reading
Country Club for a nine-hole challenge, all geared up in their petite golfing equipment for a day on the golf course. “Golf is my passion; it gives me so much joy when I see my players develop into better players through my contribution,” said Veilen Morodi, a coach at the Katlehong Golf Academy. The City of Ekurhuleni has committed to establishing golf clinics across the region so as to develop young golfers.
This is in preparation for the upcoming coaching clinics to be facilitated by golfing professionals linked to the SA Open Championships, which will be hosted by the City in January. Golf coaches interested in attending golf clinics with their teams may visit their nearest Ekurhuleni Customer Care Center to register at the Facilities Booking Clerk.

The action of celebrating an important day or event This weekend, I met up with some of my cousins whom I haven’t spent time with in a very long time. We saw each other for the first time in years at my grandmother’s funeral earlier this year, which prompted the swift arranging of a get-together, or as my cousin Charl called it, ‘’Fan-dam lunch.’’ Sparkling wine was obviously on the menu to celebrate. We chose to celebrate life together as a family, instead of only seeing each other at sad occasions such as funerals. With October in full swing, we are still going pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There are so many organisations worldwide that support the cause, with one main statement in common: cancer is not a death sentence. Our organisation of the week, Cancer.vive, is one of those organisations that celebrates survivors, educating the community on how to deal with the disease, and showing people that through awareness, you can still celebrate
many wonderful years. South Africa is still celebrating the enormous win over USA at the Rugby World Cup last week, pushing the Springboks into the quarter-final taking place on Saturday. The nation is still hoping to celebrate the ultimate World Cup victory on 31 October, so let’s get behind our team! Oprah Winfrey said that the more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate. It is with these words that I would like to greet our readers this week and remind everyone that there will always be something to celebrate, even if it’s just the gift of waking up every morning. Celebrate in your own way, whether you choose to treat yourself, or just take a few minutes out for yourself. As for me, I’m celebrating another year of life with good food in good company, as life should be.

Die mooiste mure in huise word eksamentyd geverf, honde word gebad en selfs fyngebak wat harte laat vermurwe. Maar jy sal nog so staan met jou vingers in die deeg, dan kom die beeld van die laaste hekkie by jou op, en besef jy, die melktert kan wag, as ek nie nou Rek gaan leer vir môre se eksamen nie, gaan my lewe dalk so ‘n wending neem dat ek in die tronk

Ek wil net graag baie dankie sê aan Pierre, Anita en Andre van Fox Security vir al hulle hulp op die 7de Oktober. Ek het laat gewerk en was oppad huis toe, my ma was ook laat uit. Toe ek naby aan my huis kom staan daar ’n ou wit Fiat Uno in die pad voor my hek, die kar is beplak met advertensies dat hy DStv installeer. Die man het in sy kar gesit met sy deur effens oop. Ek het verby gery en gesoek vir ’n patrollie voertuig van enige sekuriteit maatskappy, toe sien ek Fox se borde en skakel onmiddelik die beheer kamer. Ek is nie ’n kliënt van Fox nie, maar dit het nie vir hulle saak gemaak nie, hulle het
my veiligheid eerste gestel en was meer as bereid om my by te staan. Ek het die voertuig aan Anita beskryf asook die nommerplaat gegee. Binne minute het ’n voertuig gekom en die man verjaag, hy het gesê hy wag vir mense wat besig is met ’n installasie, maar die huis oorkant was gesluit en net die stoeplig het gebrand, en skielik vat die man die pad. Pierre van Fox Sekuriteit was baie gaaf en het gesorg dat ons veilig in ons erf is voordat hy ’n paar keer deur die area gery het om seker te maak dat die man weg is. Baie dankie Fox Security.

It has come to the attention of this office that some people or crime victims become vulnerable to certain crimes, because of their ‘I don’t care’ attitude. This because some victims have enough money to replace stolen goods or their property is insured. This office would like to ask victims of crime the following questions in relation to certain common crimes committed against certain age-groups: 1. “What is it that made me to be vulnerable to this type of crime?” 2. “What is it that I should have done that might have prevented this type of crime committed to me, that I didn’t do?” After analysing crime statistics, the SAPS have discovered some facts that could help citizens to protect themselves and their property from criminals. When it comes to motor vehicle theft and house robberies, criminals target victims between the ages of 45 and 60, and upwards. To protect themselves from these crimes,
elderly residents must therefore change their style of behaviour or attitude. When it comes to carjacking and theft out of a motor vehicle, on the other hand, the 25-40 age-group is targetted, because criminals expect younger people to buy expensive sound systems or car radios. Special tips to protect your car: • Park the car on a concrete slab with a chain underneath and lock it. • When you are at the shops, park the car and move towards the shops. Hide somewhere and watch to see if anyone is tampering with your car. Vehicle theft victims normally say, “I was in the shop for 5 to 10 minutes and my car was gone.” • Be alert when parked in a driveway. Driveway hijackings happen when residents are waiting for remote-controlled gates to open or while they are waiting for someone to come out of the house. A 48-year-old man was arrested by Alberton police after allegedly trying to strangle a 10-year-old boy for allegedly throwing stones at a bird in a tree in the suspect’s yard. The suspect allegedly chased the group of children, caught one and took the boy he had caught back to his yard. He allegedly proceeded to hang the boy on a tree with a rope. A woman, known to the other children, heard them screaming for help and went to see what was going on. She pleaded with the suspect to stop what he was doing. The suspect unhooked the child from the rope and started fighting with the woman. The police were called and a case of attempted murder was opened. The suspect was arrested and appeared at the Germiston Magistrate’s Court. The child was taken to hospital for observation.

Die NG Kerk het geskiedenis gemaak verlede week toe sy beleid oor gayverhoudinge in die kerk verander is. ‘n Voorstel dat predikante nie selebaat hoef te wees om as predikante te kan werk nie en sê dat burgerlike verbintenisse in die kerk bevestig kan word, is as basis aanvaar vir die pad vorentoe, het Netwerk24 berig. Die finale voorstel is met ‘n tweede ronde stemme gefinaliseer, nadat die voorstellers en hul sekondante wysigings aan die voorstel aangebring het. Dr. André Bartlett se voorstel om vorentoe te beweeg in die kerk se standpunt rondom gay verhoudings, is aanvaar met 102 stemme teenoor die 88 stemme vir Dr. Chris van Wyk se voorstel om verder navorsing oor die saak te doen voor ‘n besluit geneem word. Bartlett het na die bekendmaking van die stemme gesê dat hy oorbluf is, maar dink dat dit ‘n groot voorwaartse stap vir die herstel van gelykwaardigheid van al die kerk se gay lidmate is. Trane van blydskap is van gesigte afgevee na die aankondiging. Bartlett se voorstel het gevra dat daar verklaar word dat hetero-en homoseksuele paartjies wat in ‘n verhouding van

The purchase of these exotics often leads to pain and death for these animals, who can easily suffer from malnutrition, loneliness, and the overwhelming stress of confinement in an unnatural and uncomfortable environment. The exotic animal trade is also deadly for animals we don’t see because for every animal who makes it to the store or the auction, countless others die along the way. In addition, many people do not know that it is illegal to own, keep, breed, buy, sell or transport any indigenous reptile without a valid permit issued by the relevant nature conservation authorities. A major problem in the North West province is the buying of tortoises or chameleons at the side of the road, which is fuelling the trade in these creatures who are rapidly becoming endangered. The NSPCA works tirelessly to try to deal with this issue but it’s a continuing problem.

Removing an exotic from its natural environment is extremely stressful and causes untold suffering to the reptiles themselves. People are not aware of the correct way to care for them and again they suffer. A few months or years down the line when the novelty has worn off these creatures are just abandoned into the veld and die slow agonising deaths. They can also carry diseases which can have devastating results for the local wildlife. There’s also an important environmental factor to consider which many people simply ignore. However by removing wild animals from their natural habitats - like the rainforest or African plains - the delicate ecosystems, which rely on those species to further the life-cycle of plants and keep animal populations in check, are negatively affected. If you really want to own an exotic, make sure you do your research first as they need careful housing and handling and be prepared for a long-term commitment. Nicole van der Merwe, Michaela Murat en Lizo Sibeko het eerste plekke behaal en ook gekwalifiseer vir die skole SA’s. Hierdie drie atlete het ook Gauteng-kleure verwerf. By die SA Skole Kampioenskappe wat op 3 Oktober in Oos-London plaasgevind het, het beide Michaela en Nicole eerste plekke in hul onderskeie ouderdomsgroepe behaal en Lizo het ‘n derde plek behaal. Hierdie is voorwaar langasemkampioene!

This survivor-driven project utilises performing arts, music, poetry, dance and storytelling to celebrate victory over the disease, creating awareness and educating communities throughout South Africa. Restaurants in Arizona, USA have joined the ranks of companies supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as a way to show support for those diagnosed with the disease, their families and the professionals involved in fighting cancer. Participating restaurants are either donating a portion of their turnover to organisations, giving away free meals to people who share their stories, or hosting fundraising campaigns in aid of related organisations. “Pinkwashing” has become a familiar ritual every October, from NFL football players donning pink gloves to gun shops selling pink guns, all in the name of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A sizable industry has cropped up around the cause of “awareness.” And police departments are taking pinkwashing to a new, sometimes tone-deaf level. Towns across America have decked out their police forces in pink for the month. Many police departments are sporting new pink patrol cars. As Fairfield, Connecticut police chief Gary MacNamara explained, “If we change the look of the police cruiser, maybe we’ll change the way we look at breast cancer and breast cancer survivors.” Some police departments are going even further in their commitment to awareness. Here are some of the more creative ways the criminal justice system has been dressed up to commemorate the cause: Pink handcuffs. Police in Greenfield, Massachusetts will observe National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by wearing pins that say “ARREST BREAST CANCER – UNLOCK THE CURE.” Some officers plan to go even further to spread awareness by using pink handcuffs to arrest people. pick n pay women’s walk 2015 Ladies from all walks of life put on their pink and did their bit for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month at the annual Pick n Pay Women’s Walk. On Saturday 03 October at the FNB Stadium in Nasrec, women arrived in great numbers to take part in the fourth fun 5km walk in support of creating awareness around breast cancer. The emphasis of the annual walk is based on enjoyment of the event, as well as the experience of the sense of ubuntu which is achieved when the community comes together in the name of doing something meaningful for others. All proceeds of the walk go directly to breast cancer awareness organisation PinkDrive, which provides women around South Africa with breast cancer examinations and education. PinkDrive has a station at every walk where they offer free breast examinations, as well as the opportunity to talk to a representative about any breast-related matters.
