Shop to save a pet Rotarians whisked from fact to fiction If you are an animal lover and perhaps looking for a way to help one in dire need of care, then why not consider the SPCA Charity Shop? The Germiston and Bedfordview SPCA recently opened a Charity Shop where people can shop for second-hand goods, all for a cause. All the money will go towards caring for SPCA animals, specifically cats and dogs. The shop sells various items, from books, handbooks, blankets, clothing, toys, ornaments, furniture, to crockery. The SPCA staff would like to encourage community members to support the shop and to donate any unwanted belongings. “We could do with any assistance you may offer, especially in the festive season where lots of animals are neglected and left with no care, and become strays,” an SPCA staff member said. You can find the Charity Shop in Junction Road, Driehoek, Germiston. For more information contact Laurence Kingston, SPCA Manager, on 082 8197 123 or the main office on 011 825 5033. (Operating hours: Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 09:00 to 13:00; every last Saturday of the month: 09:00-13:00).

Do we really live in a horrible country? Is the neighbourhood really going to the dogs? Were the good old days really much better? These and a dozen more questions have plagued my mind in recent days; maybe it’s due to the upcoming elections or maybe I’m just tired of all the negative commentary. I’m under no illusion about the state of the country, but I do not believe we live in a victory-less country. The problem, I believe, is the alignment of our perspective. Rather than celebrating kilometres upon kilometres of progress, we would rather go on about a pothole. On the flip side of this argument is the truth which I’m not denying, we cannot pretend that there are no problems. However, denying ourselves the opportunity to celebrate the advances creates an air of negativity. I get angry at international reports, which often focus on the challenges we still face. Only recently though I realised that most of the time international opinions are built up by the things we say. It’s a classic marketing strategy that we as a community still need to understand and implement. If I own a company and employ twenty people, those twenty people are the first people I need to market the company to. Once that is achieved they will in turn market the company to those I need to make use of the services I offer. So really we perpetuate the views the world has of the country. The question then becomes, what image of the country do we want to send out? I certainly do not live in a in a negative place, there is a lot to love and celebrate about this place. We do have challenges, but who doesn’t? The trick to our turn-around is a change in perspective. Let’s chat, share your views at voice@ tametimes.co.za or send me a tweet @nietovoice.

Krejcir not backing down R100 000 drug laboratory bust

Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 February, to apply for his third bail application since he had been arrested in November last year. However, his third bail bid was denied on Friday. According to SAPA, Krejcir’s new affidavit that he put forward for his third bail bid stated that he had new evidence and that he believed that it would benefit his third bail application. His lawyer, Annelene van den Heever, argued that some of the information contained in the previous affidavits, which were used to oppose Krejcir’s last bail application, were not based on facts but on speculation and obtained illegally. She believed that the SA Revenue Service (SARS) affidavits that were used for his previous bail hearings, for example, were not entirely correct. According to Times Live, prosecutor Louis Mashiane objected to Krejcir’s bail bid and doubts that his evidence is new. He believes that the evidence documents were not certified and he added that Krejcir could have challenged the affidavits during his initial bail

application, but he never did. A few other factors that Krejcir believes will justify his bail application is that he does not consider himself a flight risk, as his passports have expired. He also claims that he has essential businessand tax affairs to conclude in order to keep his family afloat, which he cannot conduct while imprisoned. Krejcir also argued that he could not take care of his family while imprisoned. Krejcir was willing to pay through the nose for bail; to hand in his family’s passports, to submit to house arrest and said that he would report to a local police station daily. The court reached a third, and what may be a final, on Friday 28 February at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court and decided to deny Krecjir bail again. Mashiane argued that “all the information that the defence claimed was false information they had the opportunity to verify and argue in Krejcir’s previous bail bids.” Krejcir and his wife, Katerina Krejcirova, have both been imprisoned (Katerina was released again) and it is reported that police are looking for his eldest son Dennis as well.

KILLING THE COMMUNITY: The arrested suspect with some of the recovered drugs. A 38-year-old male suspect, a foreign national with asylum-seeker status, was charged with manufacturing, possession and suspected dealing in illicit substances at Germiston Police Station on 21 February. Based on information from a reliable source, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Germiston Crime Prevention members worked meticulously for close to six hours doing reconnaissance undercover work in and around the identified place purported to be a mini-drug laboratory. The Metro Police efforts bore fruit just after midnight, when they uncovered a drug lab in

a flat in Meyer Street, Germiston CBD. The suspect was arrested and paraphernalia normally used in the manufacturing of drugs was discovered. Five bags containing raw cat, four bags with four-thousand ecstasy tablets, 5litre containers filled with chemicals, a scale and not less than ten containers with traces of chemicals, suspected to be part of the manufacturing process of drugs, were located. The drugs found are approximately worth R100 000 on the streets. The suspect appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on 24 February.

Black money scam suspects nabbed

Faith Mazibuko, MEC for Community Safety in Gauteng, writes:

FAKE MONEY: The bag full of plain paper topped with genuine notes.

MEC Community Safety Faith Mazibuko. The scourge of substance abuse in our communities is appalling. We are all affected by this monster directly or indirectly. You either know someone who has been affected within your circles, or you are the victim of this heinous activity. Families have been dismantled, jobs and lives have been lost, and careers have been shoved down the drain all in the name of succumbing to the next fix. Six out of ten road-related deaths are alcohol related, either being a pedestrian or a driver. Results from the 2006 World Drug Report showed that 4.3 million South Africans, or 10.3% of the population, aged 16 or older used drugs. This paints a bleak picture of our generation. The question one can ask is: Do we just stand and wait for the blame game, or do we all take an active role in the fight against this monster? Our people, particularly the youth, continue to perish at the hands of drugs and alcohol. Government has invested millions in an effort to fight against the scourge, but it cannot do it alone. Parents, churches, civil society, teachers and communities at large need to pull to the same direction to take down this horrible giant. The Gauteng Department of Community Safety has spent time thinking of possible gateways and programmes that will focus

* Photo taken from www.enca.com more on prevention rather than being reactive to the problem. They include the establishment of local drug committees that will run awareness campaigns to conscientize those that are still clean on the dangers of using Nyaope, among other drugs. The programme acts as a referral system, where there is already a case of drug abuse. Here the business community has a huge role to play. In 2011 the department piloted an antiNyaope programme in Hammanskraal, where it was believed that the drug was rife and destroying the lives of the young people. The department acted on the promises made to help them claim back their dignity by booking a total of 100 male youth in a rehabilitation centre, wherein 20 young people who completed the program were further enrolled into the National Youth Service (NYS). The recovered youth are now used as motivational speakers for school safety talks and substance awareness campaigns. The NYS programme assists the youth with training in designing, monitoring and evaluating specific crime prevention interventions to help other young people. Last year, again the department took another set of 100 young men around the province who came out of a Nyaope rehabilitation

centre. This was to assist them with life skills and prepare them for the life outside the rehabilitation centre. A similar approach was adopted for Women’s Month in August 2013, wherein 100 female youth were taken to the anti-Nyaope camp. Gauteng Substance Abuse (Anti-Nyaope) Campaign was launched in Eersterus on the 29 June 2013. This campaign gave birth to the aftercare programme for recovering addicts with the aim: • To empower the recovering addicts to sustain sobriety • To assist the recovering addicts to manage their lives in a progressive manner • To help re-build their confidence and self-esteem • To link the young people to various opportunities to help them lead independent lives The aftercare initiative encourages the recovering addicts to lead drug free lives and motivates them to develop their own personal development plans. The beneficiaries are further assisted to talk about their lives, highlighting challenges that led them to be addicted to drugs. The process of opening up is meant to assist them to detach from the shame they caused upon themselves as well as forgive themselves and move on with their lives. Since the inception of the aftercare programme skills such as Cosmetology, Hospitality, Driving, Computer literacy, Artisan, Construction and Tourism are developed. SMMEs have been identified to empower the recovering addicts. Since the beginning of the year 20 beneficiaries have been given a Cosmetology course, five have been given a sound engineering course and a further 20 have undergone computer training. In March this year 30 more will be taken for drivers licences and an additional five will undergo a social auxiliary programme.

Armed with information that a drug-dealer was operating from a Highway Gardens residential complex, EMPD Equestrian Unit members swooped on the house on 24 February and, surprisingly, instead of finding drugs they came across two men suspected to be involved in a “black money” scam. A suitcase laden with clean sheets of paper the size of banknotes topped with genuine R100 notes, an ultra-violet light gadget, sheets of black paper, some chemical and a small amount of the drug cat were found in the suspects’ room. It is believed that the swindlers convince their potential victim that if they immerse the black paper in the chemical it will change into real money. Those falling for the bait are conned into purchasing a bag supposedly full of R100 notes to the value of R100 000 for only R10 000. One of the suspects was found in possession of R14 000 genuine cash. The suspects were booked at the Edenvale Police Station, where the case will be taken over by the SAPS Commercial Crimes Unit.

Hoe werk hierdie e-toll? Ek gaan doen toe navra by e-toll in Alberton City.

Suspect Dagga uprooted wanted

The Bedfordview SAPS are searching for a black, South African male taxi driver, aged between 37 and 43, for rape and kidnapping. He drives a white Toyota taxi. He is a big-boned man who speaks Sesotho or Sepedi. He wore a blue and white scotch shirt and khaki pants. He had a brush cut hairstyle and dark hair. According to the witness/victim, the suspect was standing outside of his taxi on Bradford Road. He called the witness to ask her what her mother’s name is. He grabbed and slapped her and forced her to drive with him. He stopped and waited for about 10 to 15 minutes; he then came back and ripped her clothes off and orally sexually assaulted her. He attempted to rape her he became frustrated and threw her out after spitting on her.

Murder suspect hunted down Primrose police are very proud of their detectives, who tracked down a murder suspect whom they had been looking for since 8 February this year. The girlfriend of the deceased reported the crime to Primrose police and told them that the deceased, who was her boyfriend, had an argument with the suspect at a tavern near the Marathon informal settlement. When the deceased and his girlfriend left the tavern, the suspect allegedly followed them and stabbed the boyfriend to death with a knife and vanished. The Primrose SAPS detectives were very dedicated, followed all the leads and arrested the suspect on 25 February . The accused will appear in the Germiston court soon.

The Primrose police and crime prevention youth desk, under leadership of Captain Patricia Fakude, went out on Saturday 22 February to uproot dagga plants at the Makause informal settlement. This project was an initiative of the Primrose SAPS crime prevention youth desk. According to Fakude, initiatives like these are important in the fight against drugs in the area. “As police we are proud of our youth who dedicated their time to fighting crime in the area. We will have such operations where we will keep our youth busy so that they must not think of crime,” Fakude said. In

addition, Primrose police arrested a suspect for dealing in dagga at Makause informal settlement while they were uprooting dagga. The police received a tip-off from community members about a man who sold dagga at a local salon. The police tracked him down and arrested him. “The management of the station would like to thank members of the community who supplied the police with positive information. This is an indication that our community is also tired of criminal activities,” said Sergeant Styles Maome of Primrose SAPS. The suspect has since appeared in the Germiston court.

SWS to the rescue At around 10:00 on 25 February, the SW Security control room received a panic signal from one of their clients in Castleview. They despatched a reaction officer, Morné Wittstock, to the premises, who was advised by the client that there was a suspect in the neighbour’s premises. Morné jumped over the wall into the neighbour’s yard and found the suspect with stolen goods, which included a gate rail, stainless steel and a toilet bowl. He arrested the suspect and handed him over to the Germiston Police.

Krejcir’s wife arrested According to eNCA reports, Czech businessman Radovan Krejcir’s wife, Katerina Krejcirova, was arrested on Friday morning, 28 February, at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court. Krejcirova was arrested on charges linked to an alleged stolen vehicle found on the couple’s Vaal property. Krejcirova was arrested right before Krejcir’s third bail application hearing and released again after she lodged an urgent application in the Pretoria High Court. Hawks spokesman Captain Paul Ramaloko told the media that the Hawks team has been investigating Krejcirova for the past six weeks. Media reports from eNCA further quoted Ramaloko saying, “She will be appearing in the Pretoria criminal court on Monday. This was part of a larger investigation into the Krejcirs.”

The decision by the Department of Labour to demand more, and better trained, health and safety officials on construction sites is not just reassuring for casual labourers employed on-site; it also opens up the market for trained officials. The Department of Labour will enforce new and stricter regulations for the construction industry as of 1 May. “This means that the industry will be in need for more employees than ever,” Christopher Guy of Makrosafe said. Makrosafe is the trendsetter in the areas of education, implementation and administration of Health and Safety in South Africa. “For us training providers, this will mean that more emphasis will be placed on the course content and assessment of trainees.” In anticipation of the need for more health and safety practitioners, Makrosafe has started to role out its new certificate course. The course is

offered nationwide. Providing there is enough interest, Makrosafe will bring the course to that specific location instead of expecting students to travel to a training institution. Last week Guy travelled to Bloemfontein to teach matriculants at a local high school. “It is very exciting to see how kids at high school finally consider pursuing a job in the health and safety profession. But on the same token, it was frightening to hear how many of them knew of people that were injured or even killed in work-related incidents. The focus is often on people killed or injured in crimes or traffic accidents. But the number of people involved in accidents at the workplace exceeds both,” Guy said. According to the Department of Labour, two labourers are killed on construction sites on average, each week. The new regulations are designed to reduce the number of accidents and casualties but also to

formalise the industry. It certainly will place more emphasis on health and safety. Makrosafe has, therefore, broken up its course into six different modules. “Health and safety boils down to complying with legislation. But it has a big investigative element. And, of course, there is a focus on responding to and treating injured people. These, and more aspects of the job, are discussed in the course.” The lecture in Bloemfontein last week was, in some way, a real eye-opener for Guy. “The course is supposed to cater for anybody with an interest in health and safety, regardless whether they have previous experience or training, or not. The scholars in Bloemfontein sometimes had completely different views or opinions than what we would have received from adults. Children look totally different at danger or what they perceive to be a workplace,” Guy explained

Sleepless nights for Lambton resident

A resident in Lambton has been battling for almost two years to find out why a pub behind his house is able to sell alcohol and make noise until five in the morning. According to the resident, the pub/restaurant is located in a neighbourhood block and the parking lot is situated right next to his backyard. The noise level used to be tolerable, but about two years ago it gradually became more like a night club. “We can’t sleep at night. It’s a terrible noise and it carries on until three or five in the morning,” the resident complained. According to Hilary Coke, the ward councillor for Lambton, it is illegal to make extreme noise and to sell alcohol after ten in the evening. “You cannot carry on after hours. It is still the law,” Coke said. “Taverns, pubs and night clubs need to be registered and they must have special permits and liquor licences that stipulate until what time they are allowed to do business.” advertorial Coke advises residents who are in this predicament to phone the SAPS on 10111 to report the incident and ask them to come out to investigate the situation. The EMPD can also be contacted to help in this regard. Furthermore, complainants must write to their area’s ward council to send their complaint to the relevant department and customer managers. The resident claims that he has called out the police to investigate the matter and said that they managed to quiet down the pub for a day or two, but eventually the pub reverted to its old ways. The resident has confronted the club’s management, but to no avail. He claims that they even threatened him and were not interested in compromising. At the time of going to ptint, tame TIMES was unable Go to www.tametimes.co.za to get hold of the pub for comment. The resident has been advised to follow Coke’s advice, but at this point he is exhausted from the strife.

State of the Nation Ndu Ngwenya ndu@tametimes.co.za President Zuma’s sixth State of the Nation Address shifted focus from the mandatory commentary and promises, to an approach that took a glance at Government’s successes over the past twenty years of a South Africa under a democratic dispensation. Some of the successes quoted in the 2014 State of the Nation include: • The successful nursing of the economy through the global recession • The highest employment statistic in the history of the country • Government has created 3.7 million job opportunities • Infrastructure successes including the Rea Vaya and the Gautrain, which transport no less than 1,2 million people monthly. 300 new heath care facilities and 10 new hospitals • Transformation in the judiciary with Black, Indian and Coloured judges making up 61% of all judges “As a country we have had many successes. South Africa is a much better place to live in now. We continue to face challenges, but life will continue to change for the better,” said Zuma in his address. There is no doubt that South Africa today is a far better place than it was before the days of democracy, but many critics of the 2014 speech hang desperately onto the fact that although things could look good in the rearview mirror, what the country needed to hear

was words giving hope and confidence in the Government’s commitment to propelling the country forward. Unemployment, poverty and inequality have been noted as threats to the country even by the President’s own admission. What the Parties had to say: DA: Zuma is piggybacking on others’ successes. FF Plus: It was a brag speech. The ANC misleads South Africans, hopefully voters will punish them. EFF: There was no clarity in the entire State of the Nation Address of whether Mr Zuma was giving account of the successes from 1994 or from 2009 when he assumed office as president of the Republic.

Zuma has a bad story to tell

Mmusi Maimane, DA Premier Candidate for Gauteng, launched the party’s 2014 Gauteng Election poster on 24 February. Maimane put up the campaign’s first poster outside the Gauteng legislature ahead of the State of the Province Address, which he attended. DA election posters were placed across Gauteng this week.

Voting paper must be stamped at back An e-mail message did the rounds last week telling registered South African to double check that their voting paper is stamped at the back, otherwise their vote does not count. tame TIMES asked Clr Dennis Jane to clarify the issue. Below is his response: Each party appoints up to two agents whose responsibility it is to monitor IEC official’s activities in the polling station. Once the voter’s status has been verified, they move to the table where the ballot papers are issued. When working correctly, the official should only stamp the back of the ballot paper immediately prior to handing it to the voter. What sometimes happens is that the official will stamp a number of ballot papers and distribute them from the pile of stamped ballot papers. This action should be drawn to the presiding officer’s attention and stopped. In my experience, I cannot recall any missing stamps on ballot papers. Spoilt papers certainly, where there has been no party chosen, all chosen or marks where it was not possible to determine what party had in fact been voted for. When the counting of ballot papers commences only IEC officials are permitted

Manny De Freitas MP writes: The President’s State of The Nation Address dropped even lower this year from that of previous years. Zuma used the old communication tip: say something enough times and people will start believing it’s true. So throughout his address the phrase “we have a good story to tell” was rammed down our throats. Millions of South Africans remained unconvinced. President Zuma painted only a positive, selfservicing and fabricated story. The various instances that the President gave as proof of a good story does not counterweigh

the gigantic daily scandals we encounter; Nkandla and the toll roads are only two that jump to mind. Indeed, it’s true that new dams were built in Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal provinces. However, this is neutralised in, for example, Mothutlung in the North West Province where water-supply has collapsed due to corruption and mismanagement. To add salt to this wound, three people died in a protest action in that community. The future doesn’t look bright; twelve new Future Education and Training (FET) colleges are planned. But although this is being planned, a growing number of university entrants are unable to cope with the demand of tertiary study thanks to the inferior education they receive at public schools. The bottom-line is that Mr Zuma’s story in nowhere as good as he claims.

Build up to elections 2014: see next week for more.

to handle them. After the ballot boxes are emptied on top of tables, all papers are placed face down. The first scrutiny is: do they have the official mark on the back. If yes, they are set aside. Ballots are placed face up and spoilt papers removed then sorted into party piles. The piles are counted (piles of 10 are created) and tallied. This number, together with spoilt ballots total, must be equal to the ballot papers issued during the day. All the while all the party agents have been observing the process and raising issues or agreeing to IEC officials’ actions. If the numbers do not tally, a recount may be demanded. This may only happen where there is a huge discrepancy between ballots issued and counted, or if the two leading parties’ numbers are so close that say the two missing ballots could swing it either way. All the political parties’ agents should be happy with the results and accept that there are two missing ballots (sometimes voters pocket the paper and forfeit their vote). All agents are required to sign a declaration that they are happy with the outcome at their polling station.

remember:

check that your voting paper is stamped at the back, otherwise the vote does not count.

Improve literacy, write a #bookly To promote literacy in South Africa, NATIVE VML’s Mxit e-reader app, bookly, is now expanding into a writing platform. Last year, NATIVE VML launched bookly, a sophisticated e-reader app for Mxit that delivers smartphone functionality to even the most basic feature phone. With more than 450 local and international books on the platform, bookly became popular fast. There have been over 13 million pageviews from close to a million unique visitors since launch. It has won numerous awards, including Most Innovative App at the MTN App of the Year Awards, and the prestigious Best Start-up at the annual FutureBook Innovation Awards in London. It comes as no surprise that bookly will now become more than a platform that inspires reading, but one that inspires writing as well. With the notion that every phone is a book and with a phone anyone can be an author, bookly’s new mobile site will invite users to tell their story and write a #bookly. “By expanding bookly into a writing platform, we will allow children and young adults to create content that is relevant to them and written in their own language. That way, bookly will become a platform that inspires writing, in any language, on any mobile device,” Levon Rivers, NATIVE VML’s Head of Inventions said. Writing a bookly is easy. It’s a bite-sized piece of content that can be anything, including short stories and poems. It can be written by anyone, from famous authors to aspiring ones. Any age, any language and from anywhere. Users are encouraged to share their booklys on social media, not only earning recognition for themselves but encouraging more kids to read at the same

time. Readers can review other people’s booklys and share them as well. To motivate more children to write, NATIVE VML has introduced The booklyAward. This award will recognise and reward the best booklys. The entry deadline for the first bookly Award is 21 March, and will see winners walking away with fantastic prizes and, of course, taking a step towards becoming one of South Africa’s next big authors. Prominent SA authors will be adding to the content on bookly, and workshops have been set up in Johannesburg and Cape Town to teach kids about the initiative and inspire them to write more. “At NATIVE VML, we create purposedriven work that lives in people’s lives,” said Rivers. “We are calling on all South Africans to make a positive impact on literacy in South Africa. Whether it be writing a bookly, sharing someone else’s or simply telling people about The bookly Award, this is your chance to help improve literacy in our country.” bookly can be found at the following spots: Online - www.bookly.co.za Twitter - twitter.com/booklySA Facebook - www.facebook.com/booklySA Mxit - add ‘bookly’ as a contact or mxitapp. com/bookly Youtube - www.youtube.com/user/ booklySA. How is your child’s vision? When was the last time you had your child’s vision assessed? And we do not mean can they see on the black board or read, we mean monocular and binocular visual performance. In the past we screened many grade 8s entering high school and found some alarming results. Last year we screened 306 children and here are some of the results: - 10,4% of the children had visual acuity of below 6/6 (20/20); - 7,2% of the children had monocular accommodation problems; - 7,5% of the children had convergence problems; - 18 out of the 306 children had very poor distance vision. The average reading age for the 306 grade 8s were only slightly higher than that of a grade 6 child. As you can see a large number of children have some form of undetected eye problems. Early eye exams are important because children need the following basic skills related to good eyesight for learning: - Near vision, - Distance vision, - Binocular (two eyes) coordination, - Eye movement skills, - Focusing skills, - Peripheral awareness, - Hand/eye coordination. Another alarming thing we see during these screenings is many of the children have spectacles but do not wear them, mainly due to the following reasons: - The frames are too small for them; - They are shy or dislike their frames; - Forgot them at home;

- The frames are broken. If your child has glasses or contact lenses, ensure that they wear them and are comfortable with them. Also have your child’s eyes tested at least once every two years to ensure good vision that could aid in improved school performance.

Live cricket inspires young cricketers Measuring in links St Benedict’s College Grade R boys had fun recently when they got to measure each other’s limbs with links.

St Benedict’s cricketers enjoyed a fantastic day at the live cricket match at Supersport Park. South Africa and Australia were battling it out in the first of three Test Matches. On day three, however, it was the Australians who were on top and the boys saw a magnificent century by David Warner. The boys experienced their first ever ride on the Gautrain, which made travelling to Pretoria an absolute breeze. The boys had a great time at the cricket.

Breast cancer is curable if detected early Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in South Africa. One in 29 South African women develops breast cancer. There are certain factors that increase the risk of a woman developing breast cancer. A history of breast cancer in a near relative is one of the most important. Every woman, irrespective of family history or other risk factors, has a significant chance of developing breast cancer. Although a healthy lifestyle plays a role in decreasing the risk for most types of cancer, it does not provide any guarantee against developing breast cancer. The good news regarding breast cancer is that if diagnosed early it can potentially be cured. If the cancer is found too late, it will have had time to grow and spread through the body, and becomes very difficult or impossible to treat effectively. For this reason, early detection can spare much pain and agony and, most importantly, untimely death. What can be done to detect breast cancer early? The combination of monthly breast self examination (BSE) and yearly mammography is the most effective way to detect breast cancer. Women should perform BSE once a month from early in womanhood. Ask advice regarding BSE from your health professional. If you detect something unusual in your breasts, consult with your health professional as soon as possible. Mammography is very effective in detecting early breast cancer, even before it can be felt by BSE. Mammography has in recent times become even better at detecting breast cancer due to new developments. These new developments are digital mammography and breast tomosynthesis (Tomosynthesis is a technique where images of thin layers of the breast tissue are obtained). Both of these are now available at the Femrad mammography clinics in the X-ray departments of the Union Hospital in Alberton and the Sunward Park Hospital in Boksburg, as well as at the Femrad mammography centre in Bedfordview. If an abnormality is detected by mammography, the next step will usually be to get a tissue sample of the abnormal area. The sample will be examined under a microscope, to confirm if the abnormality represents breast cancer or not. The most accurate way to obtain a tissue sample of a small abnormality in the breast is to perform a stereotactic biopsy under mammographic or sonographic control. This is available at Femrad. In order to protect yourself from the devastating consequences of breast cancer, do the right thing: •

Learn how to do breast self examination and perform it regularly.

Consult your doctor if you suspect an abnormality.

Go for a yearly mammogram examination if you are 40 years and older, or earlier if you have specific risk factors such as a family history of breast cancer.

OFF THE PITCH

The old vs the new I have had the honour of playing with and against some of the best cricketers in the world during my career as a cricket professional, and I could give you a number of By Craig Norris players’ names that would challenge the current crop of players. The likes of Clive Rice, Graeme Pollock, Sylvester Clarke and Jimmy Cook from the then “Mean Machine”, to name but a few, as well as the Chappell brother’s, Alan Border, Jeff Thompson, Dennis Lillee and Shane Warne from Australia. Today you have Graeme Smith, AB De Villiers, JP Duminy, Morné Morkel and Dale Steyn, as well as David Warner, Michael Clark, Mitchell Johnson and Shane Watson. Is it fair for me to compare these great players, whom are pretty much thirty years apart? Why not, as the basics of the game have not changed. The only thing you need to consider is that the only difference is that there is so much more money in the game now than the mid-eighties. Money aside, I would arguably say that the ex-Aussie skipper, and now commentator, Alan Border and his fellow players would agree with me in saying that his fellow teammates, as well as Pollock and co, would certainly have stood up to the challenge of the modern game. The old saying of “You can’t buy experience in the supermarket” is so true. Been there, done that and worn the T-Shirt. In an ideal world, I would love to have seen Graeme Pollock smash Mitchell Johnson all over the park and park Warne in the stands.
