Radovan Krejcir: Another murder charge Ndu Ngwenya

ndu@tametimes.co.za

The case against Czech fugitive; Radovan Krejcir took another turn on Tuesday 22 April at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court when he was charged with the murder of Phumlani Ncube. Krejcir was appearing along with six of his co-accused (Siboniso Miya, Nandi Nkosi, Welcome Mafunda, Zoe Biyela, Owen Serero and Jacob Nare) when the new charge was added to the state’s case. Phumlani Ncube who was apparently one of Krejcir’s debt collectors was found killed and dumped in a Heidelberg field in July 2013. Krejcir and his associates were attending the hearing of cases relating to dealing in drugs, kidnapping; in which they allegedly kidnapped and assaulted a man on account that his brother-“Doctor” had disappeared with 25kg of drugs which were supposed to be delivered to Australia, and an attempted murder charge in which the head investigator in the cases against Krejcir, Nkosana Ximba and private investigator Paul O’Sullivan were the alleged subjects of a murder plot by the Czech and his co-accused. The additional charge comes only weeks after Krejcir’s fourth bail attempt, since his

arrest in November, was denied at the South Gauteng High. Four of Krejcir’s co-accused (Desai Luphondo, Samuel Maropeng, George Nthoroane, Jan Mofokeng) were each granted bail of R5000.00 in December 2014. The alleged link between the new charge and Krejcir, his co-accused and Ncube’s murder is an R5 rifle, apparently the same weapon used to murder Sam Issa. Issa died in a hail of bullets while at a traffic light in Bedfordview when occupants of a Ford Ranger opened fire on his Q7. At the time of his death Issa allegedly worked for Radovan Krejcir; Krejcir has denied any relationship with Issa. The case has been postponed until June 13 for further investigations while Krejcir and associates will remain in custody. POSTPONED: The case against Radovan Krejcir and associates was postponed for further investigations. This after the state added another murder charge to its case against the Czech. It is not yet clear whether the murder charge will be added to the cases against the other suspects.

Autism Awareness Day

WALKING FOR A CAUSE: Ernie Els Centre for Autism members with Toni Mackrell and families getting ready for the fun walk.

The Ernie Els Centre for Autism held an Autism Awareness Day on 12 April at Rietvlei Zoo Farm. The aim of the event was to create autism awareness and to raise funds for the Centre. According to Claire Youngman, Development Director at the Ernie Els Centre for Autism, there is not enough centres in South Africa that are specialised enough to cater for autistic children. Recent statistics show that 1/68 children are born Autistic; indicating that this developmental disorder is on the rise. “Every child with autism is different; from extreme severe, to less severe. Autism children battle in school and there are limited autism specific

schools,” said Youngman. All the families that took part in the event wore blue to show their support for those living with Autism, as April is National Autism Awareness Month. The families all participated in a 3 km fun walk, which the children enjoyed immensely, and picnics afterwards. One of the fathers, whose child suffers from lower functional autism, expressed his gratitude towards the organisers for arranging the fun day: “We haven’t had this. Today is the first time in six years that we could come out like this. It is nice to have [this fun day] as a parent with your child. Today he can just run around; everyone understands. It is a wonderful initiative,” the father concluded. The Ernie Els Centre for Autism would like to ask anyone who is interested in

SAMA Award winners show support for Malaria

ONLY THE BEGINNING: Passionate about educating on the preventable nature of Malaria, Mi Casa aim to more to raise awareness. Award winning South African band, Mi Casa, set the stage ablaze with their shweshwe suits at the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) on Monday, 28 April. But these suits aren’t all show and no tell; they symbolise Mi Casa’s support for Goodbye Malaria, an initiative that is working towards the prevention and eradication of malaria on the African continent.

Goodbye Malaria was established by a group of African entrepreneurs committed to developing African solutions for African problems. The initiative has been operating in partnership with the Ministry of Health in Mozambique since late 2013 when it began operating an Indoor Residual Spray Program in the Boane district in Maputo province. In the past four months, Goodbye Malaria has made

use of a tried and tested system to spray over 36 000 houses, protecting over 100 000 lives in the process. Goodbye Malaria supports the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria as well as the Roll Back Malaria Partnership. “we are thrilled to have them on board,” says Robert Brozin, founder of Goodbye Malaria. “Their endorsement gives a voice, and sound, to an issue that needs local and global attention. We hope that other people will follow Mi Casa’s lead, and support Goodbye Malaria while also looking cool.” South African designer Shaldon Kopman of Naked Ape Style created Mi Casa’s suits especially for their attendance at this year’s SAMAs. The suits make use of shweshwe, the fabric that Goodbye Malaria uses in the pyjamas it sells to raise capital for its efforts on the ground. Mi Casa’s support follows close on the heels of World Malaria Day, which was held on Friday, 25 April. Goodbye Malaria’s funky shweshwe pyjama pants can be purchased on the Goodbye Malaria website at www.goodbyemalaria.com.

A few weeks ago my friend Nieto asked a question in his weekly column, the question related to the value of remembering. I found myself considering this question quite often this past weekend. South Africa has just celebrated Freedom day and in the spirit of commemorating the happenings which have made us into the nation we are today, myself and a colleague of mine took some time out and visited the Joburg Theatre to see Anthems of Democracy which took us on an amazing historical musical journey. The question however was raised while outside the theatre we saw the gruesome image of Chris Hani’s lifeless body in a pool of blood – I then asked, echoing Nieto, is there value in remembering? Congratulations to all the winners of the 20th edition of the South African Music Awards, watch tame TIMES for some of the scenes from the extravaganza held yesterday at Sun City. The next time we cycle will be a day before the country’s biggest day since the dawn of our democracy; the first vote cast after the passing of our iconic leader. I invite you to send us photos and comment on how you experienced 7 May 2014. Stay Blessed.

Thanks to the skill of the King, the Portuguese charity, Bienvenu Shelter scored a cool R40 000. Each participating nationality nominated a charity and it was this pairing that drew one of the runners in the SA Derby for their share of R150 000. Taarish the race horse tame TIMES was paired up with came 8th. The country that was paired up with Taarish was Lebanon with the charity St. Charbel Helping Hand World Organisation. The course was a flurry of activity as the 16 000 strong crowd eagerly cheered home Louis the King whilst partaking in the success of the Intercontinental Village and the plentiful activities that were on offer. The culmination of the Triple Crown Polo Finish competition saw three extremely excited race goers each presented with the keys to their brand new VW Polo Vivo’s. The gorgeous Miss South Africa, Rolene Strauss, Tamerin Jardine Miss Earth 2013 and celebrated fashion designer JJ Schoeman were amongst the well healed who took in the palpable atmosphere that the day had to offer. Organisers were clearly pleased with the success of the 2014 event, “It couldn’t have gone off better” commented Phumelela’s Marketing Manager Michael Varney, “what with Louis the King taking the Triple Crown, the enormous turnout and the increase in turnover of 20% year on year.”

Intensified Easter operations which commenced in earnest on Thursday (17 Apr) from midday in all the three operational regions of Ekurhuleni, have thus far resulted in the arresting of suspected drunken drivers, speedsters, pedestrians drinking in public and issuing of numerous citations for moving violations. Two fatalities have been recorded in Ekurhuleni since 17 April. One took place at 05h10 on Friday 18 April at the intersection of Snake and Dube streets in Benoni and the other occurred at 05h30 on Sunday, 20 April at the intersection of North Rand and Rondebult in Boksburg. Road users have been, for the past weeks, reminded by way of education campaigns, of the importance of obeying the rules of the road in order to avoid unnecessary loss of limb and life. Static and roving roadblocks targeting hazardous locations in respect of accidents, smash-and-grabs and other crimes have been the order of the day. Taverns were also targeted with the aim of ensuring that patrons don’t drink in public as well as making certain that they comply with the conditions of their permits. Twenty-three arrested suspected drunken drivers included thirteen in Vosloorus, four in Kempton Park, three in Daveyton and one in Kwa-Thema. Thirty speedsters were arrested in Brakpan, Benoni and Kempton Park areas. 434 fines were issued to motorists for exceeding the speed limit in locations identified as hazardous due to speeding. Overall, 1,123 speed fines were issued Ekurhuleni-wide. Twelve persons ended up behind bars for drinking in public (drinking and walking) in Kwa-Thema, two for being in possession of fake driving licenses and one for impersonating a police officer. Officers are ready for the high volumes of traffic expected on our freeways coming into Ekurhuleni and those passing through. The monitoring of our main routes is underway and motorists are urged to travel within the speed limits, to observe safe following distance, to adjust their speed according to prevailing conditions, to exercise patience when caught in traffic snarl-ups and to generally be considerate to all other road users.

SAPS keep roads safe over Easter On Thursday 17 April Alberton SAPS officers were out in full force making sure that everybody reach their destination safely. A cluster road block was held on the N3 South, next to the Roodekop extension 31, whereby all six stations from the area were requested to send members to participate under the command of Lt Colonel Maswanganyi. These stations include Alberton, Brackendowns, Elsburg, Germiston, Primrose and Berdfordview SAPS.

The road block itself was a success as there were no incidents, only a panga was recovered from a taxi driver and it was confiscated. The SAPS received good responses from drivers feeling that these road blocks help to deter bad driving on our roads. The metro police joined the road block and fines were issued for different traffic offences. The management of Alberton SAPS would like to thank everyone who participated in the road block.

SA, Swiss in Skills Development Partnership

A partnership between South Africa’s Department of Higher Education and Training and the Swiss Chamber of Commerce, aims to empower both students and lecturers at two of Ekurhuleni’s technical and vocational education and training colleges (TVET) in Gauteng. According to Minister of Higher Education and Training; Blade Nzimande, who spoke at the partnership launch held at Ekurhuleni West Collage in Germiston, the partnership presents many opportunities for both countries. “I am happy that our partner, the Swiss Chamber of Commerce, has proposed supporting our colleges in developing the highly skilled and qualified employees which they, and other industrialists, need. We really require and urge the whole private sector to follow in the footsteps of the Swiss Chamber of Commerce,” said Nzimande. Nzimande said the partnership program would see South African lecturers and learners placed in Swiss companies for workplace exposure, as well as industry experts from Swiss companies placed in colleges here. The program will also see learners gaining practical experience in the workplace, where they will undergo work-integrated learning. They will be eligible for recruitment after the training, Nzimande said.

Minister of Higher Education and Training also alluded to the possibility of the program being extended to other collages outside of the province. Courses in the program, identified by the Swiss Chamber of Commerce, include: information technology; mechanical and electrical engineering; sales and marketing; office administration and accounting and business studies. Ekurhuleni West (Tembisa and Germiston campuses) and Westcol (Carltonville and Randfontein campuses) have been selected as beneficiaries of the program. Ek glo so. Groetnis!

In a final effort for votes, politician have embarked on some creative means to woo voters, one very interesting effort over the past week has been that of Gayton McKenzie (see page 10). Now all that most South Africans know of this man, if they know anything, is the fact that he was incarcerated with the infamous sushi king; Kenny Kunene, so just in the interest of getting my readers up to speed here is a short bio on who the President of Patriotic Alliance is - Gayton McKenzie is a South African motivational speaker and author. McKenzie has turned his back on crime after spending time in jail. After his release, he went on national campaign to combat ever-higher levels of crime in South Africa. McKenzie talks to school children, parents and business people. Thus far, he has reached millions of them and was voted the country’s top corporate speaker for the last three years. Top motivational speaker for three years, that to me says a lot about the calibre of speakers we have in the country, or perhaps the credibility of the bodies which determine the criteria, I mean Gayton has money and by the weight of his argument, someone would have to be bribed for him to be considered best of anything. This week Mckenzie employed what I’d like to refer to as a campaign for relevance. An open letter addressed to EFF Commander in Chief (CIC); Julius Malema. The long winded letter begins by Mckenzie confessing that he is not the country’s most model citizen, if I was Mckenzie I would have ended the letter right there, but he didn’t. instead he carried on for over 1000 words trying to make himself look clean by pointing out the filth around Malema, perhaps Mr Mckenzie has been living under a rock because everything he mentioned in the letter was already public opinion. There is one thing I never understood about users of the open letter – if an issue is so serious why undermine it by using such a defence evoking platform? Isn’t the reason for pointing out fault correction? Maybe you can clear this out for me. The biggest surprise for me, many South Africans and most especially to Mckenzie must have been Malema’s non-engaging response “I have nothing to say... I don’t

think the matter deserves my attention.”

Gayton may have had noble intentions when composing the letter, but I feel by putting it out on a public platform and then being snubbed, by one man the entire country knows he needs no invitation to run his mouth, may have pushed Mckenzie further into the irrelevant politicians corner What are your thoughts on the letter? Share your views with us at voice@ tametimes.co.za or send a tweet to @ NietoVoice. Only 8 days till elections one can only wonder what surprises are still in store for us.

Dear Julius Malema

SA Police Service vs DA Julius Malema, leader of the EFF. Extracts from Gayton McKenzie’s open letter to Julius Malema (Read full letter at www.tametimes.co.za):

The SAPS has approached the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) stating their concern about the images of police shooting at a person with the DA’s Gauteng premier candidate Mmusi Maimane voice over which states, “the police are killing our people.” The SABC previously felt that the advert would incite violence and banned it from being broadcast, however after going through consultative processes with the DA and SABC, ICASA managed to broker an agreement which saw the ad back on screen. The SAPS have now thrown their voice behind the banning of the advert through a letter to the SABC informing of their intention

to complain. The DA has quickly pointed the fact that the police’s complaint falls outside of the 48 hour period provisioned by the rules governing election advertisements. “The law is clear, the regulations are clear, that should be the end of this complaint,” said DA’s Nick Ferreira. The police argue the part of the advert where Maimane says “the police are killing our people” with images of a policeman shooting at a person, would invite violent acts against the members of the SAPS. Do you think the SAPS has a valid concern? Is the DA’s time-frame argument a way of ignoring the real issue? Send us your views at voice@tametimes.co.za .

President meet Ekurhuleni Afrikaans community

President Jacob Zuma with Neil Diamond, ANC Task Team Head Ekurhuleni. Members of the Afrikaans speaking community in Ekurhuleni joined a large group of Afrikaners from across Gauteng at the Voortrekker Monument on Wednesday 23 April. This was a very rare occasion where the President met with the Afrikaans community to discuss nation building and celebrating 20 years of democracy. President Zuma addressed the Afrikaans community as part of the ANC election campaign and run up to Freedom Day celebrations on 27 April marking 20 years of Freedom and Democracy in South Africa. The President said “This momentous

occasion which takes place under the theme South Africa – a better place to live in, is a celebration of what South Africa has achieved as a nation”. Neil Diamond of the ANC suburban task team headed the Ekurhuleni delegation to the Voortrekker Monument. Diamond said it is a privilege as an Afrikaner to hear the President speak on the holy ground of the Afrikaner. “We have come along way since 1994 and I am proud to be an Afrikaans speaking South African,” he said. On this day in 1994, South Africans of all races cast their votes in the first ever democratic election, giving birth to our freedom and constitutional democracy. South Africa has since transformed; we are a people united by our love for our country and our common goal of working towards a better life for all. We celebrate the change that was brought by a people united to attain freedom. Diamond concluded by saying everyone must be encouraged to take the opportunity to celebrate 20 years of freedom and democracy, reflect on the progress we have made as country and work together to move South Africa forward.

Julius, you and I are not “revolutionaries”. We both know that. We both shop at the same Louis Vuitton and Gucci shops. We both have watches worth hundreds of thousands. We wear more money on our wrists than a miner at Marikana will ever hold in his hands. This week you had the audacity to say that you wear Louis Vuitton to “inspire the poor”. But the poor get nothing out of you wearing flashy clothes. For people like us to call ourselves revolutionaries is an insult to history’s real revolutionaries. Patrice Lumumba is rolling in his grave. Thomas Sankara wants to get out of his grave and take back his words that have found their way onto your whisky-swilling tongue. If simply wearing a beret makes you a revolutionary then my mum and all her friends have been revolutionaries for far longer than you. When the doors of government’s treasury were slammed in your face you went immediately to the poor with your cap in hand, promising them the world, when you needed their money to pay for your tax problems. You want to nationalise the mines, but that will take huge amounts of public money to sustain, with no guarantees of profit… Nationalisation is not woodwork.

Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla upgrade was wrong on all fronts. But you also took taxpayers’ money to demolish a R3 million house in order to build a R16 million house in Sandton. Your own EFF commissar Andile Mngxitama criticised you for this very thing three years ago You speak to no one with respect. Anyone who disagrees with you must know that a choice insult is already on its way from you. When the Public Protector went for you, you had nothing good to say about her. When the same Public Protector went for Jacob Zuma and Pansy Tlakula, you hailed her work. How stupid do you think we are? Most of your erstwhile comrades in the ANC remain too scared to say anything against you, because they know that they stole with you, right alongside you. You know all their secrets. You are inculcating an attitude of taking instead of contributing and working. Our youth do not need that Our youth need to be empowered educationally and financially to grow this country. For most of my younger years I was surrounded by conmen and thieves. But you are the biggest thief I ever met. You, truly, are the Con-mander in Thief. I wish Kenny would take South Africa into his confidence over the real reasons why he left EFF. Yours truly Gayton McKenzie, Patriotic Alliance President

SABC rejects EFF TV advert

Meanwhile in another TV advertisement related squabble, The SABC has denied banning an advert of the Economic Freedom Fighters, saying that the advert was not banned but had in fact been rejected on the grounds that the advert incited violence. “We did not ban the advert, we rejected the advert; there is a difference,” public broadcaster spokesperson Kaiser Kganyago said, “they submitted it, we looked at it, and we found that we couldn’t put it on air.” Kganyago explained that among other things, the slogan “destroy e-tolls physically”

used on the advert incited violence. Julius Malema said the SABC should allow people to judge for themselves which party to vote for instead of banning advertisements. According to Malema the advert was meant to be aired on 20 April, but was not and blamed the SABC’s decision on the fact that EFF was not ANC; an allegation which Kganyago denied.

CPF crime prevention tip Hijacked-car recovered in Katlehong preferably locked at all times; - Cars are securely locked and alarm activated;

The Din-Al-View area is experiencing a high volume of housebreakings and theft cases due to the fact that house owners are not properly locking up their premises. Please make sure that the following are always adhered to: - Curtains are closed at dusk (so prospective burglars cannot see your plasma TV, computers or other items that might interest them); - All security gates are locked during day and night; - Alarms are activated if you leave your house; - Garden gates are securely closed and

Get to know your neighbours, know which cars should and shouldn’t be driving up and down your street. If you see someone or a vehicle that looks suspicious, call the sector vans or your security company and give as much detail as possible. Always pick up litter on your pavements and in your fence / gate and look out for things that could possibly be any form of markers. Join your local Community Policing Forum, it is free and always will be. Remember, it is up to you to ensure the safety of your family. The complainant alleges that on 201404-16 at about 18:20 he was driving his vehicle; a silver Mercedes-Benz. He stopped at his gate in Senderwood, opened the remote-controlled gate and drove into the yard. While waiting for the garage door to open, he heard the sound of a car behind his; he checked in the mirror and saw it was not his wife’s car. He reversed and hit the car behind him and immediately two black males came to him, pointing their firearms at him. The men ordered him to get out of the car, the one went inside the garage and started to search the garage, and the one searched him. When they found nothing, they drove away in the man’s car. The car was later recovered in Katlehong.

Safety tips: during a hijacking Fraud-lady nabbed *Information supplied by Mondeor CPF SAPS area. • Your life and those with you must be your priority. Resisting the hijackers may cause them to become violent. Remember possessions can be replaced, a life cannot. • The hijackers are probably just as scared and nervous as you are. They may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol which may make their actions more unpredictable. • Don’t panic or do anything the hijackers may not be expecting. Do not scream or make sudden movements, such as motioning with your hands. • Keep your hands where the hijackers can see them. This will assure them that you are not reaching for a weapon. Do not raise your hands above your head as they may think you are attracting attention of other people. • If they order you out of the car wait for them to open the door or do it slowly with one hand, keeping the other where they can see it. • Slowly move away from the car so that you cannot be perceived as a threat to them. • Listen carefully and make sure you understand what the hijackers are saying and follow their orders. •Do not reach for or motion towards items they may demand such as wallets etc. Rather tell them where they are and wait for them to get it themselves or they may tell you to hand them over. • Be honest- if you have a firearm on

you and they ask, tell them you have. Finding out or suspecting you have lied to them may unsettle them and lead to them becoming violent. Tell them honestly how to deactivate any alarms or immobilisers or do it yourself as ordered. • Concentrate on the possibility of later identifying the hijackers. Make mental notes of how many there are, what they are wearing, their ages, and any facial or other physical characteristics. However, do not stare at the hijackers; try not to be obvious. • Hijackers may not notice a sleeping baby in the back seat. If this is the case, tell them and point out that the child is not a threat and will make things more difficult for them. Never move to release the child without them saying you may. Do the same if a pet is in the car. • If ordered to lie down, do so and remain there with your head down. Do not watch them. Stay still until you are sure they have left and only then go for help. • The hijackers may drive off with you or you may even be ordered to drive. If you are driving, do so responsibly and do not do anything out of the ordinary. Always remain quiet unless you need to reply to a question or clarify an order. • Once you have been released make sure that you are out of harm’s reach before moving to get help.

SA number one Christiaan Bezuidenhout with his defended his Western Province Stroke Play trophy. *Photo by: Barry Havenga Ekurhuleni’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout battled to a comprehensive wire-to-wire victory at the Milnerton Golf Links on Wednesday 23 April to seal his second Western Province Stroke Play Championship title in two years. Unlike the sunny conditions that encouraged low scoring over the first two, the field was assaulted by a fierce South-easterly wind that gusted with force during the third and fourth rounds. As the wind raged up to 37 km per hour, the country’s number one ranked amateur wrestled his way to rounds of 71 and 74 to seal a six-stroke victory on six-under-par 278. The Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation member was absolutely thrilled with the victory. “It was great to win under the trying conditions,” said the 19-yearold golfer. “I was really excited when I won the title last year, but this year’s win actually means so much more to me. I am really pleased with the way I hung in there, because at times we were playing in a five club wind and my frustration levels went climbing through the roof.” Bezuidenhout said tee to green was tough, but he especially struggled on the greens, he was thrilled to walk off the 18th the champion, despite a bogey finish. “Days like this are a great test of patience and determination, I am proud of the way that I hung in there and that I kept on fighting. I think that is why this second victory almost means more to me than the first.”
