Tutudesk; a partnership initiative by the family of the Nobel Prize winner; Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, and the Amway Corporation handed over more than 1529 Tutudesks to Rondebult Primary School. The Germiston school has become the latest beneficiary of the campaign, which was established with the objective to help underprivileged children realise their right to education in learners and the benefit of doing so without the hindrances often associated with poorly equipped schools. The handover event was attended by representatives from the Amway Corporation, Desmond Tutu’s family and a group from Vanderbilt University in Nashville Tennessee (USA). The guests of honour were no doubt the girls and boys of Rondebult Primary who sang and participated in numerous activities while they eagerly anticipated the handover. Rondebult’s Headmistress, Mrs Nozuko Khenyana welcomed the various delegates and gave a brief history of the 130 year old school, which she joined in 2010. The school has since gone through various upgrades all geared towards addressing challenges of overcrowding in the classrooms. “Thank you to Amway South Africa for your faith in our school,” said Mrs Khenyana speaking to the Tutudesk partners. “We have challenges, but we are improving and we know that we can do it regardless

The desks will alleviate pressure and improve our results. Our learners will be eager to come to school knowing that they don’t have to share a desk”. Speaking at the handover, Amway South Africa’s General Manager; Raj Parshotam said, “The learners are the special ones.

When we look at the country ten years from now, it is this group which will be the engine of the economy.” Amway, through its One by One division and the Tutudesk, campaign has to date invested over R2,2 million and distributed over 14 000 lapdesks to schools all over the country in the areas which Amway operates.

A note from the editor

On Friday 16 May, Reach for a Dream and 20 of their little queens enjoyed a day of pampering. During their day at the Palace of Dreams at Emperors Palace, the girls enjoyed royal treatment and the company of Hlubi Mboya (actress), Tshegofatso Monggae (Miss SA 2014 finalist) and Vusi Zwane (Peermont Corporate Affairs & CSI Executive) among others. The objective behind the day was to make the girls feel special and beautiful while easing the effects of their illnesses. The girls were also treated to lunch, a walk down the red carpet to a throne where they were crowned with a tiara and a sash as a “Queen for a Day”

Wear your tekkies for a good cause Tekkie Tax 2013 exceeded all expectations by raising R2.4 million in their first year. More than 180 local welfare organisations benefited from the proceeds which were all distributed in November last year. So where did the hearts of the people lie in 2013? 34% of the participating audience chose a C sticker, representing Children, making this the most supported sector. This year the Tekkie Tax team presents you with yet another opportunity to show where your heart lies on Friday, 30 May 2014. Members of the public are asked to get a Tekkie Tax sticker for a R10 donation from any of the participating welfare organisations. You can also order what you need directly from their

website. Depending on where your heart lies, you can choose any of the 5 sectors you would like to support when buying your sticker/s (and YES, you may choose more than one) Animals, Basic Family Care, Children, Disability or Education On Tekkie Tax day, you simply wear the big sticker on your lapel and put the small one on your cellphone to stay there for the rest of the year. Whatever your outfit is for the day, wear

your tekkies. You can even spiff up your tekkies by getting a pair of their funky shoelaces called “Tekkie Tags” (R30 including your sticker of choice) The campaign is endorsed by 15 of our biggest and most accountable national NGOs in the country, representing more than 1 000 local organisations. • Epilepsy SA • Child Welfare SA • SOS Children’s Villages • CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation) • Special Olympics SA • Endangered Wildlife Trust • HPCA - Hospice Palliative Care SA • Pet Welfare SA • Imisebeyelanga Services • Meals on Wheels • ACVV • VVA • Highveld Horse Care Unit • Cheshire Homes SA • SAVF . . . and these are just the national beneficiaries. Annelise de Jager, National project organiser said, “Saving money is always an important issue but saving money in a fundraising campaign is vital. With 15 national welfare organisations working together we are able to keep the costs of the project lower than any other campaign of its kind. We are not re-inventing the wheel but we are changing the face of fundraising in SA.”

Yet another week has gone by and we are now fast approaching the half way mark of 2014 – how are we doing on those resolutions? Today we wake a country with a new National Parliament, new Provincial Legislatures and most importantly a newly swornin President of the Republic of South Africa. We have a lot to be proud of, now I know there is a lot of work yet to be done before we realise the South Africa of our dreams, but indulge me for a second – how many countries on our continent hold regular elections? In how many African countries are election results accepted as the true reflection of the peoples will? Since the dawn of our democracy we have as a nation learnt to live with the results of our now steady and periodic elections. We don’t always have the panoramic perspective needed to acknowledge not only the negative elements of the state of our country, but we also need to celebrate our advances lest we slip into a hopeless national depression. On Sunday the continent celebrated Africa Day. I personally enjoyed the day listening to music representing the diverse cultures of our continent thanks to the amazing performers who made my day at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens. What did you get up to? Let me know and send your photos to ndu@tametimes.co.za. Onto the newspaper, we have launched a new feature in conjunction with Fashion House & Buyers Lounge in Bedfordview where we will be receiving fashion tips once every two weeks – have a read on the colours and trends for this winter in Fashion Trends by Erika Schwartz. Stay Blessed

All the beneficiary organisations render a service in South Africa. They have been selected, hand-picked and checked out carefully to ensure that no matter which sector you choose to support, your donation will be used in the best possible way.

African People’s Convention Krejcir: increasing legal woes The PolitBuro of the APC met on Sunday 18 May to reflect and analyse the outcome of the 2014 National and Provincial elections and to map a way forward. Among the issues addressed was the APC’s call for the review and possible migration of the current paper based electoral system to an electronic system. The APC thanked all citizens who exercised their right to vote in the May 7 election and urged those who abstained to reconsider

their position in the future. Along with their call for an electronic voting system the APC also called for the full implementation of the electoral policies regarding campaigning on the election-day, wearing of party regalia as well as the current political party funding in order to level the playing field. All of the PolitBuro’s requests were made as a means of ensuring that the principle of free and fair elections maintained.

* Photo by Werner Beukes/SAPA Radovan Krejcir’s legal woes were increased on Thursday 22 May, when the North Gauteng High Court granted a provisional preservation order against the assets of Krejcir, his wife and several companies which he allegedly used to avoid paying his taxes. Krejcir’s legal team lodged an application to have the hearing for the order postponed stating that due to preparations for his criminal case in the South Gauteng Court and his extradition hearing Krejcir had his hands full

– the application was unsuccessful. The results of the unsuccessful application and the courts approval of the preservation order means that the Czech fugitive’ assets would possibly be sold by a curator in order to recover an unconfirmed R114.7 million which Krejcir owes on his taxes. The judge; Ephraim Makgoba, stated (in relation to the application for postponement) that Krejcir was employing delay tactics as more than enough time was granted for him to prepare an opposing affidavit. By Thursday, when the ruling was made, no document had been received from the defence team. Krejcir’s kidnapping and drug dealing case, where he and four of his co-accused are standing in trial for the alleged kidnapping of Bheki Lukhele continues in the South Gauteng High Court. The kidnapping and subsequent assault allegedly came as a result of a R25 million drug deal gone wrong. On Wednesday 21 May Judge Collin Lamont warned Krejcir’s legal team against any time wasting as the case needed to be concluded soon.

The police rushed to the scene and followed the information and the suspect was arrested, he was taken to Primrose SAPS for detention. Primrose SAPS is appealing to the community to refrain from criminal activities because crime does not pay. Correction

Last week in a crime story titled ‘Robbery suspect convicted and sentenced,’ we stated that Senzo Simelani was sentenced to 28 years in prison and was declared unfit to possess a firearm. This was an unfortunate mistake as Simelani was in fact the investigating who worked tirelessly to make the arrest of Lucky Ndlovu who was sentenced to 28 years in prison. We apologise for any harm caused by the mistake.

A few of the sport activities completed in the Games include: cycling, ball dribbling, ball kicking, ball hopping, among other ball activities, as well as balancing and ring throwing. All the creches that participate in the Metro finals received medals and certificates of participation. The top scoring children won equipment prizes, to enable them to carry on participating in sport at home.

On Friday 16 May over 1000 children from crèches throughout Ekurhuleni participated in the 2014 Ekurhuleni Kiddies Regional Games. The Kiddies Games is an annual event, which forms part of the Ekurhuleni Department of Sport and Recreation’s Early Childhood Development Programme, with the overall aim of encouraging youngsters to participate in sport, and to keep them healthy. “This is a very important programme for us as a Department, because the Early Childhood Development Programme teaches them [the children] co-ordination. They are not playing for championships at this particular moment; they are just recreating. We expect that as time goes on, some are going to be influenced by this and go to sport, others will play sport, others will be coaches, and others will be trainers. From this programme we may identify talent,” said Cllr Zeni Tshongweni, Ekurhuleni MMC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture. According to the Ekurhuleni Director of Sport and Recreation, Atwell Sijadu, the initiative also aims to encourage mass participation in sport from a young age. Colour me winter With Autumn/ Winter 2014 arriving in full force, South African fashion trends are featuring and focusing on the iconic 50’s style. To find distinctive items for your closet from chic European styles to local trend setting designers, pop into the smaller boutiques and select your comfy every day wear or visit chain stores. Prints retain their popularity in stores and wardrobes of the fashionable, as they have been for the past two years, and will remain sought after (even the perceivable summer floral prints) throughout the Autumn/Winter season. The long trending leopard print has left the scene this year while snakeskin and tiger-prints take the limelight. South Africans have a tendency to shop more along the lines of simple, traditional styles and remain drawn to the “safe” colour chart. This season pastels and softer colour trends have successfully replaced the dull greys, insipid browns and the monotonous black wardrobe that usually make their appearance when the chill sets in. Those in the know predict more of the nudes, creams, coral, and mints garments in the softest tones, but this time with a difference. Add a pop of colour with accessories to break through the flatness.

Must have items this coming season: Coats, dresses, chunky knitted jerseys and scarfs. At work look: Pair these with leggings and sky-high stilettos, for the feminine touch at the work place. Night out: For a romantic dinner wear your warm woolies with knee high boots for a more laid back, comfortable feel.

By Erika Schwartz

A-line coats are a big trend this season. They come in varied lengths and can be worn in many different ways including as a dress over winter leggings or you can wear a long or short coat with skinny jeans and boots to keep snug and chic on those colder winter days.

Rofail’s closing balance of just over R32 000 took him up the leader board entitling him to the first prize in the pool of R70 400. Rofail’s luck changed when he caught two quartets later in the day which put him in front with a clear lead. Players in the tournament played off a R6000 starting balance where they had to play a minimum of R400 per race, R1000 on exotics and the remaining R1400 was used at their own discretion. Rofail who plays under the name the Sundance Kid said, “It feels great to know that I am South Africa’s champion punter.” The next TOC race meeting is expected to take place end of July.
