ndu@tametimes.co.za

Ashley Willows, a matric student at Assumption Convent participated in the Miss T.E.E.N (Teenagers Exemplifying Excellence Nationally) Pageant this year and on Saturday 24 May the Germiston resident was crowned victorious and walked away with the coveted prize. Speaking to tame TIMES, Ashley explained that she had participated in the pageant during 2013, only two months after getting into modelling, but was unsuccessful. “This year I went into the competition with much more experience, thanks to Charlotte Smith of Charzam modelling agency, who assisted me with all my training. In the first year I had no expectations when I entered, this year I was not surprised when I made

it into the top 5, but I could not believe my ears when I was announced as the overall winner,” said a still excited Ashley. Ashley will be leaving for Texas in six weeks to participate in an international competition; the opportunity comes as a spin-off from winning the Miss T.E.E.N. “Winning this title will open me up to many opportunities, more especially because I want to continue pushing for a prominent modelling career,” said Ashley. Ashley thanks her friends and family especially her mom for all the support during her journey and hopes they will continue to support her career. She hopes to use the crown to positively impact people’s lives and to export the cultures of South Africa out into the world.

Reach for a dream foundation - a taste of flight Ndu Ngwenya

@nduzo twitter.com

Ten youngsters recently had their dream of flight fulfilled when the Sky Raiders Aviation Academy and Charter welcomed the Reach for a dream foundation to their premises at the Rand Airport in Germiston. Fuelled by Leonardo da Vinci’s claim that - Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return, and the innocent imagination of a child; the dream to take to the skies prompted the folk at Sky Raiders to take some time away from their regular business of pilot training and chartering their clients and committed to making the dreams of the ten children a reality. The children were split into two groups and were flown in turns on Sky Raiders Beechcraft King Air B200 plane.

Ittakes avillageto raise a child; it takes a village to protect a child.

By Nieto Hernan Growing up in, I was taught that every female of my mother’s generation or earlier was to be respected as my mother and that every man was similarly meant to be respected as my father. This in my opinion served very well in making sure that myself and many growing up during that time were kept in line; disciplining a child was the responsibility of every adult and hence the saying – it takes a village to raise a child. Over the past week I was forced to remember those days, not for the discipline, but for the protection children also received from those adults. I have to say this, I do not believe in making mistakes in order to learn, yes we can learn, but one will never live long enough to make all the mistakes by themselves, sometimes you will need to learn from other people’s mistakes. I remembered those days for the protection children were afforded even from repeating mistakes. The 200 girls kidnapped by the Islamic extremists in Nigeria come to mind and I question - if the saying were true today, were those then girls in fact kidnapped by people who should have been protecting them? Adults often complain that today’s youth are lost and short of direction, but let’s look at it from another angle for a second – who raises these kids? Parents and adults have delegated the parenting of children to video games, so called social media platforms and a number of other platforms which cannot raise kids. And then we are surprised at the result. Parents and adults are continually failing kids and in so doing failing the security of a functional future planet. We have a serious problem if we think children abused for 16 years by their father, while living in a community full of adults, will grow up and build functional societies. If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to protect a child. As far as I’m concerned adults need to wake up and face the responsibilities they have towards children. Let’s chat. I would love to hear your views regarding the responsibilities of parents and adults to every child within our communities. Email voice@ tametimes.co.za or tweet @NietoVoice.

Fatima pilgrimage: largest of its kind By Manny de Freitas

ON FOOT: Pilgrims in the streets of Bedfordview The annual Fatima pilgrimage took place in May and proved to be a great success with over 2500 pilgrims walking the pilgrimage. A target of 2000 pilgrims was set compared to the 1800 pilgrims who participated last year so it was great news when the target was exceeded making this pilgrimage the largest of this kind in South Africa. This pilgrimage is the eighth that has taken place in succession. The first pilgrimage took place in 1991 with only around 50 pilgrims led by the parish youth group at the time. The pilgrimage on foot celebrates the apparitions of Our Lady to three shepherd children in the hamlet of Fatima in Portugal. On13 May 1917 Our Lady first appeared to three poor shepherd children. During these apparitions, that took place over the next six months, our Lady under the title of “Our Lady Queen of the Rosary”, appealed for prayer, especially by praying the Rosary and conversion and peace in the world. Since these apparitions, millions of people have changed their lives positively and come to practice the messages of Fatima. Because these apparitions took place in Portugal, the Portuguese have a special devotion to Our Lady of Fatima. The predominantly Catholic Portuguese community are one of the largest immigrant communities in South Africa. This pilgrimage commenced at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, in Malvern East and ended, after a four kilometre pilgrimage on foot when the rosary is prayed, with Holy Mass at the Schoenstatt Shrine in Bedfordview.

It was announced that as an extension and success of the pilgrimages, the Fatima five Saturdays will be instituted. The Fatima five Saturdays originated when one of the visionaries, Sister Lucia dos Santos, then a postulant, received a visionary visit by the Child Jesus and the Virgin Mary in her convent cell. Showing the young nun a heart surrounded by thorns, Our Lady said, “See, My daughter, my heart surrounded by thorns which ungrateful men pierce at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude... Say to all those who, for five months, on the first Saturday, confess, receive Holy Communion, recite the Rosary and keep Me company for 15 minutes while meditating on the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary, in a spirit of reparation, I promise to assist them at the hour of death with all the graces necessary for the salvation of their souls.” Through the tireless efforts of Sister Lucia and others, this great, yet simple devotion has, over the last nine decades, spread around the world, uniting millions in a universal and continuous act of reparation that seeks to console the Hearts of Jesus and Mary and to save souls everywhere. As requested by Sister Lucia, the five Saturdays will start on the first Saturday of each month from June until October which is also a month devoted to Mary. All are invited to recite the rosary at 16:30 on the Saturdays of 7 June, 5 July, 2 August, 6 September and 4 October at the Schoenstatt Shrine in Bedfordview. Just like the pilgrimage, we will start small but hope to grow each month as more and more people discover for themselves the power of the Rosary.

The KEG brand has been with us from 1990 and since then has grown to be one of the premier pub and traditional food restaurants in the country. Keg and Crow in Bedfordview was awarded for the franchises coveted ‘store of the year’ award this year. tame TIMES had the opportunity to visit the store and to get a taste of what makes Keg and Crow deserving of this accolade. Arriving at the restaurant at the Key West Centre (43 van Buuren Road) we were greeted by friendly staff and an equally inviting atmosphere created by live music (See Time Out with Ashton) and the chatter from the patrons. Soon after our arrival it was time for us to get down to the main order of the day, it is true after all that the taste is in the pudding. First up on the menu was the Sunday roast, which consists of a generous selection of pork, beef, or lamb roast, served with roast potato and a selection of vegetables. Often when one goes out for dining, considering the economy, you are forced to choose

between just a starter, or a main, or desert – we loved the Keg and Crow’s roast offering and it was the fact that it comes with a complementary ice cream and chocolate source. A great tasting meal with loads of value. The second meal on the table was yet another generous meal, in fact the team agreed that generous is an understatement. The Crazy Burger is a specialised offering only available at the Keg and Crow. The burger is really big, so big that anyone who manages to finish the burger on site gets their name engraved on a plaque displayed at the restaurant. The succulent Crazy Burger is carefully constructed with a total of three pure beef patties, bacon, cheese, mushroom and a creamy mushroom sauce served with fries. KEG makes a claim that you can spend a ‘lifetime’ just tasting and experiencing what they have to offer, after experiencing just two meals from the ‘Good Food’ menu and a well selected wine from their ‘Thirst Things First’ drinks menu, we can confirm this one thing – the Keg and Crow definitely deserves their store of the year award and your consideration next time you feel like an outing with friends.

Ekurhuleni Girl Guides off to the UK Girl Guides is among one of the worlds largest voluntary movement for girls and young women in the world. The Girl Guides organisation was established in 1907, the now 107 year old international organisation continues to teach girls and young women morals and high standards of discipline. In South Africa Girl Guides has a membership of over 30 000 girls and young women. tame TIMES had the opportunity to find out more about the guides from Sue Voster who is the East Gauteng Regional Commissioner. Girl Guides are separated into four age groups categories; the Brownies (7.5 years to 10 years), Guides (10.5 years to 14), Rangers (14.5 years to 18) and the Young Adults (18+).

Sue told us that although Guides enjoys good support in the country, we are far behind European countries that are much closer to the birthplace of the organization in the UK. This year Sue and a group of five Rangers will be visiting England to meet crews from there and experience environment other guide clubs exist under. “The girls have embarked on a few fundraisers to help finance their journey to the birthplace of Guides and Scouts,” said Sue The girls, who all come from the Ekurhuleni region, will be in England for 12 days and upon their return will continue to raise funds in order to pay their families for the difference they have subsidised towards the trip.

Front: Molne Kunka, Sgt Mothibi and Elizabeth Mampame. Following the shocking video of a toddler gagged and tied up with masking tape at a crèche in Rosettenville, Champions Crèche requested Women & Men against Child Abuse (WMACA) to give a talk on child abuse. Other ECD (Early Childhood Development) centres in the area were invited to the Booysens crèche as well as Booysens SAPS VEC (Victim Empowerment Centre) members. Vincentia Ngobese, WMACA operations manager explained the safety measures ECD’s need to take and went on to say that every behaviour has a meaning. If a child is crying non- stop or being naughty there is a reason as to why they are acting like that. “If you isolate a child during teaching- it is considered a crime as they have a right to an education. Rather ask the child to check if the other children are doing their work or give them a task to do in the class,” Ngobese said. “You as the teacher need to be bigger and maturer in the situation.” It was stated that the owner of the Rosettenville crèche has been put on the Child Protection Register. This is a list of people who have been found unfit to work with children. It was explained to the teachers that no matter what culture or religion you are, hitting a child is considered a crime with corporal punishment being banned in 1996. “If you suspect a child is being abused, you may report it. If you know a child is being abused, you must report it. “Failure to report is a criminal offense with a woman recently receiving 15 years in jail due to this,” Ngobese said. Ngobese added that when you see a bruise, blood or sore on a child, one must not ask who did this you but rather ask what happened then take the child to the hospital and

tell the parents to meet you there. “Also, don’t act like a medical practitioner as this will only traumatise the child further. Don’t hire a person who has a history of sexual offense or domestic violence as a teacher,” Ngobese concluded. For more information on WMACA please visit www.wmaca.org.za. Safety measures ECD’s need to take: - They need to have a safety committee. - Legal documents- children’s diary, registers (sign in and out), break duty rosters need to be kept especially for communication with a parent. - Access control of who comes in and out of school. - Incident report book- in case a child gets hurt during break or at school. The principal needs to know about it and take responsibility. - Fully stocked First Aid kit and staff members who are trained in First Aid. - Medication consent form- if a parents wants the teacher to administer medicine it must be recorded in the diary as a consent form. The medicine must have the name on and be locked away. - Indemnity forms must be signed for trips and excursions. - If the school has a feeding schemethey must have a vendor contract that complies with health and safety measures. On 14 April this year, more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls were kidnapped from their school in the small northern town of Chibok, in the northeastern state of Borno. The girls were abducted by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram. A few of the girls have escaped, but the remaining girls are still being held captive. Rumours are circulating that the girls are being married off to militants. Defence chief Air Marshal Alex Badeh announced on Monday night that the military has located the girls, but offered no way forward. “We can’t go and kill our girls in the name of trying to get them back,” he said. President Goodluck Jonathan and Nigerian government officials have joined forces with other countries, such as the US, to help bring the girls home.

CIVILIANS: all over the world are actively involved in protests to urge the Nigerian government to find the girls.

Rotarians gamble for charity On Thursday 29 May, Rotary clubs representing Germiston, Boksburg and Benoni gathered at Carnival City Casino to battle it out for a grand prize of R25 000 for their charity of choice. Benoni Rotary were the lucky first-prize winners. Whether a winner or loser, the main aim of the competition was to have fun for a good cause. Members from the Boksburg Lake Rotary, Boksburg Rotary, Benoni Rotary, Germiston Rotary and Nigel Rotary all gathered in the casino in high spirits; eager to win money for charity. To make the competition even more exciting, Carnival City roped in their Most Valued Guests (MVGs) to play a few gambling games on the Rotarians’ behalf. The games included American Roulette and blackjack, as well as Casino Wall, House Money, Money Wheel, Avatar and 21+3. This is the second time that Carnival City hosted and sponsored this fundraiser, and they intend to make it an annual event. “We try to give back to the community. We wanted something to add fun and flare, which is

why we came up with it; the focus was on Ekurhuleni, because we want to take care of our own. We want to show Rotary that we notice their efforts and we want to revive their existence within the community. We want to take care of the key community figures that make changes in the community. We thought that if we kick-start and spearhead this initiative, then we can get more people aboard next year,” said Simon Ngale, Marketing Manager Carnival City. Even though the teams were hoping for the grand prize, every Rotary club that participated received money to donate towards their charity of choice. Everyone was a winner.

One colourful success Ndu Ngwenya ndu@tametimes.co.za Bedfordview Primary School held their annual fundraiser, which is also the only fundraiser for the year, on Saturday 31 May at the school. This year’s fundraiser was a resounding success thanks to the weather, parents support and, as many learners would agree, the colour festival. Speaking to tame TIMES, Mrs Lana Loggenburg (Marketing) explained that the success of Saturday’s event was thanks to the support of patents and local business’, the PA committee and the support of

Bedfordview Primary School’s headmaster; Mr Greg Bryant. In order to promote safety of all attendees at the fundraiser, the school introduced an electronic payment system. “We have had a great turn-out this year, and the colour festival is a major contributor to this, most of the stalls are run by parents of the learners, but the learners themselves also run a stall per grade so that we can make them part of the process of raising funds for the school. Once we have a calculation of how much was raised, the funds will be allocated to a project which will be decided at a later stage,” said Mrs Loggenburg.

The colour festival added to the success of the fundraiser.

Following up on the experience Pitter Patter had at the fire station, the learners were given an opportunity to dress-up as the heroes and heroines in their communities. The children come to school dressed up in clothing that put them in character as the people who help us in society.

On Thursday 29 May Assumption Convent School’s students and staff members gathered at one of the school’s fields and prayed for other schools and for the kidnapped Nigerian school girls. 250 balloons with prayers attached to them where then released.

On April 14 more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls were kidnapped from their school in the Nigerian town of Chibok. Since the kidnapping several video’s and photos have been circulate depicting the world’s outcry over the crime against the girls and pleading with the Islamic extremist group; Boko Haram, to release the girls. tame TIMES supports all efforts and initiatives geared towards raising awareness and pressure on world leaders to intervene and secure the safe return of the girls. Germiston South Primary learners clean up ignored park Due the non-responsive numerous requests to have the Park at 9th Ave Park (opposite the Epworth Children’s Home) cleaned up, Germiston South Primary School undertook on a ‘Community Clean Up Germiston Parks Campaign.’ The campaign has been focused on the park because, according to Winnie Haveloh, the Council has over 20 years failed in its duties to maintain health and cleanliness regulations in the park. Some of the noted issues around the 9th Avenue Park are as follows: 1. The Park swings have been broken for 20 years and

never painted in that period opposite the Epworth Home. 2. The Parks dept. just mows over the bottles creating dangerous walking conditions for children and pets. 3. Mounds of Earth have not been flattened out when irrigation channels were cut by the kerbside by the. 4. The railway fence has been flattened in many areas and is rusted. 5. Cars and motorbikes drive dangerously all over the park mainly on weekends, the park should have poles all-round to prevent this. 6. Signage has not been maintained for 20 years.

Students do their bit in Vietnam Confidence booster as 19 Holy Rosary students, accompanied by three of the school’s staff, recently took time out of their regular holiday routine to visit Vietnam. During the once in a lifetime tour of Vietnam, the group worked in the Mai Chau Valley where they built a toilet block for a poor elderly couple, and painted classrooms at a local school. Both learners and teachers appreciated and learnt much about the Vietnamese people and their culture.

AshtonDuToit

Ashton Du Toit performing at the Keg in Bedfordview. At first glance nothing could differentiate Ashton Du Toit from his group of friends. tame TIMES met up with the vibrant group of friends at the Keg and Crow in Bedfordview, but as soon as the 19 year old UJ Bcom Law student picked up his guitar and took to the mic, we along with other patrons at the restaurant were blown away. Before joining us for a brief chat, Ashton performed a selection of covers during his acoustic set, which we later learnt was part of now two month long relationship he had with Keg and Crow - Ashton performs at the restaurant every Sunday afternoon. Who is Ashton? I am an ordinary guy, I live in Bedfordview, and I really enjoy music. When did Ashton realise this love for music? Thanks to my farther, I picked up the guitar at a pretty young age. My dad would never admit that he is a really talented musician so he put me through the basics and from there on it was a skill I had to polish by myself and gradually I got to the point where I am today. What type of music does Ashton enjoy?

Well it is pretty difficult to box myself into a specific genre, but to answer that in the best way I can, I’d say – I enjoy songs individually. So if the song appeals to me whether it is a rock, pop, or even hip hop, I appreciate it on that appeal. Whenever I do covers then I would just judge my audience and see what kind of style twist I would need to give the piece so that I can maximise their experience. For instance for this venue I would always bring an acoustic and melodic repertoire. What is the one thing you enjoy most about live performance? I’ll speak about my experience here, the one thing I enjoy to see is the tapping of the feet. People often sit and enjoy their dining and the conversational company they have around the table, but when you look closer you see the feet tapping to the music, that is humbling. So is the life of music the life you would like for yourself moving on from here onwards? I am passionate about music, but I also understand that it is not the easiest of industries to get into, so as much as I would love to, I am also preparing myself through my law studies for anything.

Thaba Trails hosting the SA XCO Champs was pleased to see that the reputation of Thaba Trails did not stop these two uni-cycle riders from enjoying the beauty of this MTB Gem in the South. The preparation of the trails steadily moves forward as the 4,5km trail is tweaked and prepared for the Nationals in July. On the same trails, Thaba Trails Club will be hosting the Gauteng XCO Championships on 12 July. The preparation and building of mountain bike trails has to take into consideration the terrain. Rain storms can so quickly destroy well designed trails when the environment is ignored. Therefore making use of natural substances such as rocks, trees, small bushes and the elevation of the land is a vitally important consideration There will be XCO races catering for all age groups at the South African Championships as well as the Provincial Championships and the youngest age category will be the Nippers who are aged 9 and 10 years, while the Sprogs are aged 11 and 12 years old. All local riders in these ages can contact Wendell Bole at 082 900 0749 for special preparation for these future events. Coaching clinics will be held on Saturday mornings at Thaba Trails. If you are interested, ask your parents to make the call mountain biking is fun.

Photo by Christiaan Kotze With a victory of 32 – 21, the Lions made sure to crash the Vodacom Bulls’ hopes of making the Super Rugby playoffs. The Bulls had to win all their remaining games, with bonus points, if they wanted to make this Super Rugby season a success. But the Lions would not allow the Bulls to win them on home grounds and thanks to a flawless kicking performance from Marnitz Boshoff, who scored 22 points on the night, the Lions dominated the match. This victory for the Lions also broke a losing

streak of seven games, after they started te season with four wins in a row. The Lions now moved off the bottom of the Super Rugby log, taking them to 13th place with their fifth victory of the season. It was clearly a victory built on passion, from the kickoff the Lions showed that they were in it to win it. The Super Rugby tournament will be put on hold for the next month while the Springboks, All Blacks and Wallabies play their International tours.

OFF THE PITCH

Cricket in Limbo We have certainly been entertained for five weeks with the Indian IPL Cricket, which has seen the unlikely KKR Franchise overcome, the Kings XI Punjab in the final on Sunday. Wow, what a spectacle it has been. West Indian off spinner, Narine chose to play for KKR in the IPL final ahead of his commitments for a West Indian training camp and has thus been excluded for selection to the West Indies team for the immediate future. I have often sat and wondered where the future of cricket is headed to. It is rather concerning that the ICC have decided that the big three in India, England and Australia would have total control in the decision making of the game. I totally disagree with this and believe that all the Test playing nations should have an equal input in the deciding of the game going forward. Surely, South Africa as a major cricketing nation must have a say, considering the fact that our Proteas have arguably dominated the rankings in recent times, as well as being the number one team for a couple of seasons. On top of this, we as a country have proved to the world that we can host major sporting events, especially the Soccer World Cup which is the number one event in the world, regarding crowd attendance at games as well as television viewership. However, were we promised or given massive lump sums of money from the ICC that would keep the game in this country moving forward as long as CSA gives the ICC their support? Perhaps we will never know the answer to this. I fully understand that India are by far the dominant cricketing nation and huge revenue is brought in through crowd attendance and lucrative television sponsorships, but one needs to be careful of giving these three nations too much dominance. On the playing front, all does not seem to be rosy for England at the moment. Over the past couple of weeks, the Director of the England and Wales Cricket Board,

Paul Downton, has made mention through the media as to why Kevin Peitersen was axed from all English By Craig Norris cricket teams. Pietersen in return has given his version of events, as well as made it known to Mr Downton that he has a superb record whilst representing England. One of the world’s most renowned cricketer’s in Geoff Boycott has certainly backed ‘KP’, as Pietersen is known to his fellow playing colleagues. It is such a shame because it sounds like he is still very passionate about setting records for his adopted nation. The administrators in the English game have not accepted any responsibility for Pietersen in terms of managing the player and I believe they have failed big time here. Cricket fans across the world will now be starved of watching a great Test player, although at times was quite controversial. You need to watch this space, as my feeling is England is on a downward spiral. Swann and Trott depart during the Ashes Series, Pietersen is axed; and another England great in Graham Gooch get’s shown the door. By the time you read this article, the appointment of the Proteas captain will have been announced. A couple of weeks ago I stated that AB De Villiers will be the new skipper, with Faf Du Plessis as his assistant. Let’s hope that the new skipper will get the support of the current crop of players for the Sri Lankan tour which is around the corner; and a visit to Zimbabwe for an ODI Series which includes one Test Match, before tackling the West Indies in the New Year. I look forward to the long days of the real thing; and that is Test Match cricket.
