Lions break their losing streak

Lakefield resident Chantelle Poulton has lived in Benoni her whole life; she has two daughters and works as an industrial broker selling factories. This 43-year-old mom never expected that a lucky draw would whisk her out of her comfortable everyday life into the once-in-a-lifetime experience of being one of Tiger Woods’s exclusive VIP guests in Las Vegas. Last month, Chantelle was one of eight lucky winners of the Emperors Palace: A Touch of Class III Swing with the Tiger Promotion competition, where the top 100 casino players at Emperors Palace were automatically entered into a draw and stood the chance of becoming one of Tiger's VIP guests from1520 May 2014. Being one of the top 100 casino players at Emperors, Chantelle was entered into the draw and won a spot for her and a partner on an exclusive golf exhibition and personal meet and greet with Tiger Woods in Las Vegas. “When my name was called, I was speechless and shocked. It wasn’t real yet,” Chantelle said, still in awe. As a lucky winner, Chantelle had the privilege of playing a round of golf with Tiger, and participated in the Tiger’s Poker Night charity fundraiser, presented by

the World Poker Tour. Chantelle also won VIP tickets to the 16th annual Tiger Jam concert at Mandalay Bay. What made Chantelle’s experience even more incredible, was the fact that this was her very first time overseas. “It was the best week of my life. I’ve never experienced anything like it. Tiger was so down to earth. He made us feel like we were the VIPs, not him. He was so friendly and nice; he joked with us. On the golf course he was so patient. He is an awesome person,” Chantelle said. Even though Chantelle did not know the first thing about golf, Tiger was very pleased to teach her everything she needed to know. What Chantelle enjoyed the most, however, was playing poker alongside Tiger at a table of 50 of the world’s top poker players. Chantelle would like to thank Emperors Palace for sponsoring her poker buy-in; it was a surreal experience that Chantelle will treasure for a lifetime. Since arriving back from Las Vegas, Chantelle says that she feels like a true celebrity. Her friends and family still cannot believe that their local friend and mother had been playing golf and poker alongside Tiger Woods. Chantelle has already framed a photo of her and Tiger and hung it on the wall

of her Benoni home, just to remind herself that she had not merely been dreaming: “I am still speechless and in a daze. It was worth every cent I ever spent.”

Early Christmas for the homeless

MRR staff and Benoni van Ryn Rotary members properly cheered up those who are less fortunate in Boksburg.

With Winter weather in full swing, Malherbe Rigg & Ranwell Inc. (MRR) and the Benoni van Ryn Rotary Club collected blankets and food to hand out to the homeless community in Boksburg. The official handover took place on Monday 19 May. Everyone was very grateful for the love and kindness that they were shown on this day. “No one can deny that the weather has taken a drastic turn and while we all put on our woolen socks and climb into a warm bed every night, we should remember all the people that sleep on the street. One fascinating thing about the company’s visit was the homeless people’s sense of community. They all take care of each other even in the most dire of circumstances,” said MRR Attorney and Conveyancer, Taryn Johnson, who also took part in the handout.

This week we have a whole page dedicated to Child Protection Week. As a newspaper, we have the responsibility to inform parents and children about their rights. Often we read stories in the news that confirm that people are not always aware of their rights, or the consequences for those who violate human rights. Two stories that have been making headlines this past month were the Springs House of Horrors and the Nigerian girls that were kidnapped from their school this year. To imagine the fear and trauma that these children underwent is extremely unsettling. Our aim this week was to help raise awareness of child abuse and to shed light on the importance of looking after our children. They are the youth of tomorrow and future leaders of our country. Set a good example and nurture them, so that they can do the same one day. Make this month your month to reach out and make a difference in the life of a child in need; extend a helping hand and show our children that they deserve protection and love and are worthy of nothing less. Spinning the Money Wheel. On Thursday 29 May, Rotary clubs representing Boksburg, Benoni, Germiston and Nigel gathered at Carnival City Casino to battle it out for a grand prize of R25 000 for their charity of choice. Benoni Rotary were the lucky first-prize winners. Whether a winner or loser, the main aim of the competition was to have fun for a good cause. Rotarians trying their luck at gambling all gathered in the casino in high spirits; eager to win money for charity. To make the competition even more exciting, Carnival City roped in their Most Valued Guests (MVGs) to play a few gambling games on the Rotarians’ behalf. The games included American Roulette and Blackjack, as well as Casino Wall, House Money, Money Wheel, Avatar and 21+3. This is the second time that Carnival City hosted and sponsored this fundraiser and they intend to make it an annual event. “We

try to give back to the community. We wanted something to add fun and flare, which is why we came up with it. The focus was on Ekurhuleni, because we want to take care of our own. We want to show Rotary that we notice their efforts and we want to revive their existence within the community. We want to take care of the key community figures that make changes in the community. We thought that if we kick-start and spearhead this initiative, then we can get more people aboard next year,” said Simon Ngale,

Marketing Manager at Carnival City. Even though the teams were hoping for the grand prize, every Rotary club that participated received money to donate towards their charity of choice. Everyone was a winner. child was the responsibility of every adult and hence the saying – it takes a village to raise a child. Over the past week I was forced to remember those days, not for the discipline, but for the protection children also received from those adults. I have to say this, I do not believe in making mistakes in order to learn, yes we can learn, but one will never live long enough to make all the mistakes by themselves, sometimes you will need to learn from other people’s mistakes. I remembered those days for the protection children were afforded even from repeating mistakes. The 200 girls kidnapped by the Islamic

extremists in Nigeria come to mind and I question - if the saying were true today, were those then girls in fact kidnapped by people who should have been protecting them? Adults often complain that today’s youth are lost and short of direction, but let’s look at it from another angle for a second – who raises these kids? Parents and adults have delegated the parenting of children to video games, so called social media platforms and a number of other platforms which cannot raise kids. And then we are surprised at the result. Parents and adults are continually failing kids and in so doing failing the security of a

functional future planet. We have a serious problem if we think children abused for 16 years by their father, while living in a community full of adults, will grow up and build functional societies. If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to protect a child. As far as I’m concerned adults need to wake up and face the responsibilities they have towards children. Let’s chat. I would love to hear your views regarding the responsibilities of parents and adults to every child within our communities. Email voice@tametimes.co.za or tweet @ NietoVoice.

Detective Warrant Officer Gideon O’Neill. Detective Warrant Officer Gideon O’Neill firmly embodies the saying: ‘where there’s a will, there’s a way’. Gideon is adamant that all criminals should be brought to justice, even those who have been long forgotten in the coldest of cases. Gideon reaffirmed his reputation when he hunted down a criminal, who has been wanted since 2006. “I am part of the police because I want to serve the community to the best of my abilities; it is what I must do to implement safety and justice,” said Gideon proudly. On 20 May 2014, the 43-year-old wanted suspect was arrested for intercepting a cheque of R26 104, 50. The suspect worked for a transport company in Dr. Vosloo Road in Bartlett that sold Diesel. He was the middle man between the client’s orders and payments to the company. The suspect collected the cheque after he had delivered the client’s order for 4500 litres of Diesel,

and disappeared with the cheque. The company opened a case of fraud against him in December 2006. Gideon managed to track him down eight years later. “Every year the police circulates dockets for wanted criminals. I re-opened the docket to see if I can track him down. I pulled a profile on him, by using his ID-number, and learnt that he had since been arrested twice in Denysville, Vrystaat, for assault and reckless and negligent driving. I phoned the Denysville detective office and informed them that we have been looking for this man since 2006. They followed up and tracked him down. I went there and he was arrested the next morning [20 May 2014],” explained Gideon. The alleged criminal has been brought back to Boksburg North SAPS on a Warrant of Arrest that was issued for the suspect. He first denied the fraud allegation, but later apologised and said that he merely borrowed the money and would be willing to pay it back. He is currently in police custody and they are awaiting a court date. “Due to good investigation by the investigation officer, the man is behind bars after eight years. Just to show the community that it does not mean if a case is closed, that there is no movement on the docket,” said Boksburg North Communications Officer, Lieutenant Juanita Coetzer. Everyone at Boksburg Norht SAPS is very proud of detective Gideon.

Ekurhuleni medium term budget speech Ndu Ngwenya ndu@tametimes.co.za

Filadelfia School’s choir provided musical items before the speech and during intervals.

Clr Moses Makwakwa (MMC for Finance) gave his Medium Term Revenue and Expenditure Framework budget speech for the 2014/2016 to 2016/2017 periods, the speech was delivered at the Ekurhuleni’s Germiston Council Chambers on Thursday 29 May. this was a speech which was accepted by the ANC and NFP while the DA found it was not acceptable as, according to several speakers, it ignored the real issues. Clr Makwakwa noted this speech as one to be remembered as it falls in the same year that we celebrate 20 years of South Africa’s democracy. He also thanked the South African public who showed their faith in the ANC during the Country’s May 7 Election. According to the Finance MMC, the MedTerm budget has been crafted to address among other things, sustainable and continual service delivery, acceleration of service deliver in areas where tere were none, creating an environment which advances the City’s objective of being the preferred destination for growth and development. The speech highlighted a few advances by the City, including: the findings of the South African Cities Network State of the City

Report, which found Ekurhuleni to be part of the five largest Metros which account for 60% of the national economy, and Moody’s Credit Rating Agency showing confidence in the City by maintaining its Aa3za grading. The expenditure budget for the period 2014/15 is R28 Billion and will be informed by the following contributors; R4 billion from assessments rates, R12 billion from electricity sales, R1 billion from refuse collection, R4 billion from water and sanitation, R5 billion from government grants and R2 billion from other revenue. Tariff increases which will affect Ekurhuleni’s residents over the same period are as follows: 7.5% on assessment rates, maximum of 7.6% on electricity, an increase of 8.1% on water, 8% on sanitation, a maximum of 7.1% on residential refuse removal while the increase for businesses will be 6%. In terms of the spending of the budget, the City’s plan factors in the following: R10 billion for bulk water, electricity, and sewer services, R2 billion for repairs and maintenance, R5 billion for personnel costs, R1 billion as a provision for bad debts, R2 billion for depreciation, and R8 billion for general and grant expenditure.

Glenmorangie honours township lounge By Charity Moyo Famous and successful Ekurhuleni businessman Bafana Nkosi leases a White House Lounge in Spruitview. He was recently selected as one of seven businessmen who were memorialised by iconic global whisky brand Glenmorangie. Nkosi is among the seven owners in the Gauteng area that embodied the spirit and potential to be selected for this prestigious honour. The nominees were presented with a bespoke portrait shot at the prestigious Rand Club, by renowned photographer Tim Hulme. Nkosi, who is also a qualified medical practitioner, is committed to improving the experience and lives of people in the community. He said that they cater for middle and upper class people, bringing style to the township. “It is not about drinking alcohol but it is a place where people network and we also host private occasions. It is an honour that our lounge was identified with other seven bars around Gauteng province by Glenmorangie. There are few brands decorations around the township and this is a challenge to other brands to do the same. We are going to maintain the standard by bringing people from other areas to our lounge,” said Nkosi. Sean Olivier, Glenmorangie Marketing Manager, said: “These one of a kind portraits are acknowledging that the bar owners have elevated their businesses above the competition, and a celebration of their respected standing in the community. We have been offered the opportunity to work with outstanding entrepreneurs on this project that embodies the spirit of Glenmorangie.”

The Village Café, also known as the White House Lounge in Spruitview, was established by Bafana Nkosi who, like most young men, aspired to be a top businessman in his community. The White House Lounge was recently revamped; transforming into the premier night spot in Ekurhuleni. It is a spot which brings friends together to enjoy good company, share business stories and enjoy the smooth taste of Glenmorangie single malt whisky.

Tip: Van uitstel kom afstel. As jy weet dat daar belangrike planne is waarby jy en jou metgesel nog moet uitkom, kry dit so gou moontlik gedoen. Die eerste tree is altyd die moeilikste, maar daarna is die bal darem aan die rol gesit.

Beeld reported last week that five children, between 2- and 16-years-old, were allegedly held hostage by their 36-yearold father, who is a local businessman in Springs. The children were allegedly gruesomely tortured and abused. They have allegedly never left the house, or even gone to school. The neighbours only found out about the children for the first time on Monday 26 May, when one of the 11-year-old boys who escaped the house begged them for help- Beeld “House of Horrors”.

on 14 April this year, more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls were kidnapped from their school in the small northern town of Chibok, in the northeastern state of Borno. The girls were abducted by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram. A few of the girls have escaped, but the remaining girls are still being held captive. Rumours are circulating that the girls are being married off to militants. Defence chief Air Marshal Alex Badeh announced on Monday night that the military has located the girls, but offered no way forward. “We can’t go and kill our girls in the name of trying to get them back,” he said. President Goodluck Jonathan and Nigerian government officials have joined forces with other countries, such as the US, to help bring the girls home.

Reiger Park playgroup enjoy Play Day. As part of Child Protection celebrations, Boksburg Child Welfare included World Play Day into their calendar. According to Marlene Visser, Director of Boksburg Child Welfare, this exciting new feature offers children the opportunity to explore new ways of learning and gives adults a chance to connect with their inner child. This year’s theme is The Right to Play. While play is an important children’s right, it is sad to note that many children living in South Africa are denied this right on a daily basis. As children learn through play, it is vital that all children are exposed to resources that enhance their learning and that they have access to safe and clean places to explore. To mark World Play Day and Child Protection Week, Boksburg Child Welfare has embarked on a series of projects that will highlight the importance of play in a child’s development. The aim is to empower children within themselves and to protect them from violence, exploitation and abuse. On 28 May this year, Boksburg Child Welfare celebrated World Play Day with the Reiger Park playgroup, where this initiative was launched. The following projects are lined up for June: 5 June 2014: Celebrating childrens’ right to play. Children from Villa Lisa Play group to attend. 4 June 2014: Child protection in Villa Lisa. Activities focusing on personal safety and child bullying for children; also topics for parents that include the right and responsibilities of children. 5 June 2014: Awareness programme on domestic violence in Vosloorus. 6 June 2014: Child protection activities in Reigerpark. Activities focusing on personal

safety and road safety for children. Topics for parents include: rights and responsibilities for children, corrective discipline and neglect. Vincentia Ngobese,Operations Manager at Women & Men against Child Abuse, supplied a list of safety measures for Early Childhood Development Centres: Safety measures ECD’s need to take: - They need to have a safety committee. - Legal documents- children’s diary, registers sign in and out, break duty rosters need to be kept especially for communication with a parent. - Access control of who comes in and out of school. - Incident report book- in case a child gets hurt during break or at school. The principal needs to know about it and take responsibility. - Fully stocked First Aid kit and staff members who are trained in First Aid. - Medication consent form- if a parents wants the teacher to administer medicine it must be recorded in the diary as a consent form. The medicine must have the name on and be locked away. - Indemnity forms must be signed for trips and excursions. - If the school has a feeding schemethey must have a vendor contract that complies with health and safety measures. Must not accept donations of old food. - Their building must have an electricity compliant certificate as well as working fire extinguishers. - Teachers must monitor when children go to the bathroom.

Zumagotchi is a video game, featuring South African president, Jacob Zuma. It is like the good old Tamagotchis, except that you get to tend to the needs of a miniaturised, inept pseudo-leader. If you follow politics and would enjoy mixing some humour with it, then Zumagotchi is ideal. tame TIMES caught up with the team who produced Zumagotchi for an exclusive behind-the-scenes interview. For safety purposes, their identities will remain anonymous: Where did Zumagotchi start? The game started off as little more than a silly idea. I literally dreamt up the concept one day in the shower; thought it'd be pretty funny, and seeing as I had been toying with the idea of creating my own video games for a while I set it in motion. I quickly whipped up a prototype, and while I originally intended to just let it die as a personal joke in prototype form, everyone I showed it to was adamant I needed to keep working on it, to finish it and release it for all South Africans to enjoy. So seeing as I'm awful at art, I approached people I know who have a penchant for it and we started transforming the idea into something tangible. What inspired the idea? The idea for the game was entirely random. Obviously, Zuma was (and still is) dominating news headlines at the time and he'd managed to find himself at the forefront of the minds of pretty much all South Africans. It made me wonder if anyone had ever considered creating a video game about Zuma, and the idea organically grew from there. In a way I guess Zumagotchi is a vehicle through which to voice our frustrations, but all we really want to do with it is make people laugh. We're not political activists. We just love this country a great deal, and it's a shame to see its remarkable potential wasted on such an incompetent leader. The idea [for the name] is definitely inspired by the Tamagotchis we used to love as kids. The Zumagotchi name just fit perfectly. And the natural gameplay loop of Tamagotchi works brilliantly as a means to get our message across while hopefully being fun to play as well. Is there a hidden satirical aim to the game? Such as to mock our presidency? Despite outward appearances, I wouldn't necessarily say that its purpose is to mock anyone. Originally what I wanted most was to show the general South African public that video games are a more powerful medium than they perhaps expect them to be. That games can make powerful statements. I wanted to help affirm their legitimacy as an art form, show people who haven't had much exposure to video games that they can be more than just blind entertainment. And again, what we really intended to do was give people a reason to smile, while at the same time giving them something to think about. And if it helps even one person realise the boundless potential of video games, or inspires even one person to perhaps pursue the possibility of creating their own video games, then we've achieved something.

When did you and your team start working on the game? Work started on the project around October 2013. We all lead busy lives, so we could only work on the project when free time allowed for it, and it obviously took much longer than it would have- were we able to devote all our time to it. Is the game very popular? The game's been pretty popular in terms of visitors to the website. Thousands of people have visited the website since launch, and they've come from all over the world. The visits haven't really translated to sales (less than 50 copies have been sold thus far), but Zumagotchi has never been about making money, so we're not bothered. Did you expect that the game would be popular? Honestly, for a while there we expected nobody to care about the game's existence at all. But the thousands of visits to the site have proven otherwise. Also, we didn't expect even a single sale, so that's been a surprise as well. Your average person doesn't see value in video games the way they would in other products. They don't seem to realise that games are made by teams of people, who put a ton of work into creating this thing for which they refuse to pay money. People have a sense of entitlement about video games, that they absolutely have to be free or they're just not interested. There are many reasons for that, too many to list here really without running the risk of boring your face off. :P Has Zumagotchi paved the way for similar games to be produced by your team? We're so relieved to be done with Zumagotchi right now, that no, we're not yet planning to embark on another journey of interactive political satire just yet. Still, we can't be sure what the future holds; politicians (and people in general, really) will always have the innate ability to do incredibly idiotic things that automatically breed endless satirical possibilities, so perhaps inspiration will strike once again in the future and we'll poke fun at someone else. I've started tinkering with other game ideas that don't have political themes though. At this point, what we enjoy most about the game is that it's done. Because it turns out developing video games is ridiculously hard work. :P Thankfully, it's also ridiculously rewarding work. It's been great seeing the positive feedback we've gotten from people who've played the game and appreciate its message and purpose. And the support we've gotten from family and friends has been overwhelming. There are also tons of in-jokes in the game that give it loads of personal meaning to us, but which most people will obviously never know exist. Where can one find this game and which devices support it? The game is digital download only, and is currently available for PC and Android devices. We plan to bring the game to other platforms as well if people request it (we've been asked to bring it to BlackBerry 10, for example), and buying it once will allow you to use the game across all supported devices wherever possible. If we were to port the game to iOS, for example, we'd be forced to charge for that version individually because of Apple's policies.

Zumagotchi can be downloaded from the website for only R29, 99. Visit www. zumagotchi.co.za to experience it for yourself.

Safe blood for saving mothers “Childbirth and other gynaecologic complications are amongst the highest demand for blood daily in South Africa.” – Vanessa Raju, SANBS Communication Manager The world celebrates World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) on 14 June. WBDD raises awareness of the need for safe, good quality blood and blood products and honours the many voluntary unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. The further purpose is to create widespread awareness throughout the world about the need for availability and appropriate use of safe blood and blood products, and the need for many more people to make a commitment to regular voluntary unpaid blood donation. Established in 2004, World Blood Donor Day falls on the birthday of Karl Landsteiner. Landsteiner discovered the ABO blood group

system, which is used today to ensure safety of blood transfusions. WBDD is an annual event that is jointly sponsored by the World Health Organisation. It is one of eight official international public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO). This year’s campaign “Safe Blood for Saving Mothers” is to develop a strategy to highlight the need for timely access to safe blood in the prevention of maternal deaths. The death of a woman from complications during childbirth continues to be a serious global health challenge. Approximately 800 women die from pregnancy or childbirth-related complications

daily. Just about all of these deaths occur in developing countries. More than half of them take place in sub-Saharan Africa and almost one third in South Asia. The risk of maternal mortality is highest for adolescent girls under 15 years of age. Severe bleeding during delivery and after childbirth is a major cause of death, illness and longterm disability. Largely, it is the most common cause of maternal mortality and contributes to around 34% of maternal deaths in Africa, 31% in Asia and 21% in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has dedicated the entire month of June to increase awareness regarding the critical need for timely access to safe blood as part of a comprehensive approach to preventing maternal deaths. Blood transfusion has been identified as one of the nine key life-saving interventions for the management of pregnancy-related complications. SANBS encourages people to donate blood regularly and would like to thank the blood donors who sacrifice their time in an effort to save lives of people in need of blood. Get involved. Give blood and participate in local events being organised to celebrate Blood Donor Month. For more information visit: www.SANBS.org. za or call us on 0800 11 90 31.

Playing towards a vision The East Rand Football Club is a newlyregistered soccer club in Windmill Park, offering local youth the opportunity to explore their passion for soccer and to develop their talent. The team was founded last year by Lebo Molotsi, Nkateko Mboweni, and Xolisa Watson Sineke, who assisted with assembling players and served as an interim coach during the course of the season. This team is fast-growing and the founders are very excited about the next season. Currently the club falls under the Local Football Association league, which is the division of the South African Football Association where development takes place. Teams falling in within the LFA leagues are not funded by government and the focus is predominantly on taking initiative where there is room for growth. Since thr East Rand Football Club was assembled last year, the players, who are u/20 predominantly, have played in the Local Football Association Vosloorus league and they are waiting for their results. According to founder and team manager, Lebo Molotsi, this team was not only started to develop potential professional players in Windmill Park, but to serve the broader East Rand community as well. “When I started the team we were not only thinking Windmill Park, but to see how many teams I can get involved to partake and be a feeder or form one big East Rand Club,” Molotsi explained. Behind Molotsi’s vision for the club as a whole lies his passion for soccer and his belief that it can be used to uplift youngsters. According to Molotsi, Windmill Park lacks proper sport infrastructures, such as public swimming pools or tennis courts or clubs that have proper sporting facilities, which make

it difficult for the youth in this area to train or partake in a sport. The Club aims to uplift the youth, especially those who come from impoverished backgrounds and need the support: “I want to give them that leverage; to tell them that listen, you can be something in life. Windmill Park is highly characterised by gangsterism, substance abuse and that type of thing, so it is more than just a soccer team,” Molotsi said. Molotsi hopes to expand the club into a fully-fledged East Rand academy, where they present young, aspiring soccer players with the opportunity to develop their game and to get recognition for their accomplishments on the field. Currently the Club is in dire need of sponsorship for the team’s kit, for transport (as many of their games are played in Vosloorus), medical kits and water bottles. Interested sponsors can contact Lebo Molotsi on 078 143 9054. If there are any youngsters out there (between the age of 16 and 20) who are interested in joining the team, contact Lebo as well. The Club is very eager to expand the team.

South Africa’s young 7s score gold South Africa had a full run of victors against Kenya (the region's Nanjing 2014 Games representatives) in the U18 African 7s Championships at the African Youth Games in Botswana. South Africa beat Kenya 30-0 and Madagascar 52-0 on day one. Ivory Coast forfeited their fixture granting South Africa a great start to the tournament. On Day two South Africa were involved in Semi-final action against Namibia, whom they

beat 41 – 0. In the final game South Africa played against Kenya. Leading up to the final against South Africa, Kenya had faced Madagascar, whom they beat 24-0. Kenya lost their second game to South Africa with a score of 0-30. On day two they Kenya met up with Zimbabwe in their semi-final, and earned they chance to face South Africa again with their 17-12 victory. In the final game, South Africa was even more determined to make a statement against Kenya, who will be the African representative at the Junior Olympics later this year. South Africa emerged as tournament winners after beating Kenya 60-0. The team also won gold in the 2013 Australian Youth Olympics.

Stephanie Conradie stephanie.conradie@tametimes.co.za With a victory of 32 – 21, the Lions made sure to crash the Vodacom Bulls’ hopes of making the Super Rugby playoffs. The Bulls had to win all their remaining games, with bonus points, if they wanted to make this Super Rugby season a success.

But the Lions would not allow the Bulls to win them on home grounds and thanks to a flawless kicking performance from Marnitz Boshoff, who scored 22 points on the night, the Lions dominated the match. This victory for the Lions also broke a losing streak of seven games, after they started te season with four wins in a row. The Lions now moved off the bottom

of the Super Rugby log, taking them to 13th place with their fifth victory of the season. It was clearly a victory built on passion, from the kickoff the Lions showed that they were in it to win it. The Super Rugby tournament will be put on hold for the next month while the Springboks, All Blacks and Wallabies play their International tours.

Offthepitch:CricketinLimbo We have certainly been entertained for five weeks with the Indian IPL Cricket, which has seen the unlikely KKR Franchise overcome, the Kings XI Punjab in the final on By Craig Norris Sunday. Wow, what a spectacle it has been. West Indian off spinner, Narine chose to play for KKR in the IPL final ahead of his commitments for a West Indian training camp and has thus been excluded for selection to the West Indies team for the immediate future. I have often sat and wondered where the future of cricket is headed to. It is rather concerning that the ICC have decided that the big three in India, England and Australia

would have total control in the decision making of the game. I totally disagree with this and believe that all the Test playing nations should have an equal input in the deciding of the game going forward. Surely, South Africa as a major cricketing nation must have a say, considering the fact that our Proteas have arguably dominated the rankings in recent times, as well as being the number one team for a couple of seasons. On top of this, we as a country have proved to the world that we can host major sporting events, especially the Soccer World Cup which is the number one event in the world, regarding crowd attendance at games as well as television viewership. However, were we promised or given massive lump sums of money from the ICC that would keep the game in this country moving forward as long as CSA gives the ICC their support? Perhaps we will never know the answer to this. I fully understand that India are by far the dominant cricketing nation

Thaba Trails hosting the SA XCO Champs was pleased to see that the reputation of Thaba Trails did not stop these two unicycle riders from enjoying the beauty of this MTB Gem in the South. The preparation of the trails steadily moves forward as the 4,5km trail is tweaked and prepared for the Nationals in July. On the same trails, Thaba Trails Club will be hosting the Gauteng XCO Championships on 12 July. The preparation and building of mountain bike trails has to take into consideration the terrain. Rain storms can so quickly destroy well designed trails when the environment is ignored. Therefore making use of natural substances such as rocks, trees, small bushes and the elevation of the land is a vitally important consideration There will be XCO races catering for all age groups at the South African Championships as well as the Provincial Championships and the youngest age category will be the Nippers who are aged 9 and 10 years, while the Sprogs are aged 11 and 12 years old. All local riders in these ages can contact Wendell Bole at 082 900 0749 for special preparation for these future events. Coaching clinics will be held on Saturday mornings at Thaba Trails. If you are interested, ask your parents to make the call mountain biking is fun.

and huge revenue is brought in through crowd attendance and lucrative television sponsorships, but one needs to be careful of giving these three nations too much dominance. On the playing front, all does not seem to be rosy for England at the moment. Over the past couple of weeks, the Director of the England and Wales Cricket Board, Paul Downton, has made mention through the media as to why Kevin Peitersen was axed from all English cricket teams. Pietersen in return has given his version of events, as well as made it known to Mr Downton that he has a superb record whilst representing England. One of the world’s most renowned cricketer’s in Geoff Boycott has certainly backed ‘KP’, as Pietersen is known to his fellow playing colleagues. It is such a shame because it sounds like he is still very passionate about setting records for his adopted nation. The administrators in the English game have not accepted any

responsibility for Pietersen in terms of managing the player and I believe they have failed big time here. Cricket fans across the world will now be starved of watching a great Test player, although at times was quite controversial. You need to watch this space, as my feeling is England is on a downward spiral. Swann and Trott depart during the Ashes Series, Pietersen is axed; and another England great in Graham Gooch get’s shown the door. By the time you read this article, the appointment of the Proteas captain will have been announced. A couple of weeks ago I stated that AB De Villiers will be the new skipper, with Faf Du Plessis as his assistant. Let’s hope that the new skipper will get the support of the current crop of players for the Sri Lankan tour which is around the corner; and a visit to Zimbabwe for an ODI Series which includes one Test Match, before tackling the West Indies in the New Year. I look forward to the long days of the real thing; and that is Test Match cricket.
