Last week Monday was a very sad day for myself and my family – my great aunt passed away after a long battle with cancer. Born on 12 June 1932, Granny Sue was a very special person who was loved by many. My fondest memories of her were when I spent time with her in her old house in Rosettenville. The smallest things are what I cherish the most – I remember the pot plants on her porch, her ornaments from years back and her sweet jar that was always filled to the brim. She also loved dogs and would spoil them rotten. I always thought she looked like a Hollywood movie star. Her funeral took place last week Thursday and we will miss her deeply. Love you Aunty Susie with all my heart. Rest in peace. Cancer creeps into all of our lives, with most of us knowing at least one cancer sufferer. Several years ago a close family friend passed away from cancer on her birthday. With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month I would like to pay tribute to those who have lost the battle against the disease as well as to those who are currently fighting it. I urge all women to get checked regularly. I recently shaved off a section of hair in support of the fight against cancer. What will you be doing this October?

Dear Candace, your article “The Rise of Smallville Comics” was so interesting; I read it over a few times and cut out the article and placed it in my diary. The reason for this was that the article took me back more than 60 years ago when I was still a teenager. I loved reading all kinds of comic books that I could lay my hands on, including the classic ones. Reading the comic books gave me the feeling of being transported into another world. I was actually oblivious of what was taking place around me. I would read any comic book over and over again, and my parents were furious about my addiction – I was reprimanded

and cautioned so many times. I had to hide every comic book because my parents simply confiscated them from me, tore them up or burnt them. The reason was that I was neglecting my schoolwork and did not participate in sports or other activities. Thanks for the lovely article; I wish you and your newspaper success and everything of the best.

EDITOR’S RESPONSE:

Hi Rose, reading your letter made me smile and also took me back to my childhood when I used to read the Harvey Comics at my gran’s house. My favourite was Hot Stuff the Little Devil.

FULL OF LIFE Letter by Sydney Cloete Hello, first of all thanks for a lovely paper – it’s different and refreshing! This message is to suggest something, although some might find it amusing and strange. I am a senior citizen with life and zest and I am irritated with the attitude of most people out there. We are not old and we are not dead yet and most of us plan to live a heck of a long time. I want to meet those funky lively people over 55. There are so many people out there but they stay at home because they think that there’s nothing for them to do – or so they

think. I have a heart full of plans but don’t know how to get those single and bored men and women out of hiding. Come on tame TIMES, what can we do to get those single, lonely, bored bodies out into a life of living? I want to hear from singers, dancers, musicians, and anyone who has a talent. Let’s live and let live!

EDITOR’S RESPONSE:

Dear Sydney, I believe that age is nothing but a number. Let’s see what we can do to get people out of their chairs.

LIGHTS STILL BURNING Letter by Mondeor Resident The street lights are still burning during the day in Mondeor! What is going on with City Power? For goodness sake, these lights have been burning for months now. Is there really nobody out there that cares? Switch the lights off!

EDITOR’S RESPONSE:

provided the following response: Dear Candace, I am aware of this matter and have reported it on my side. I am told that they are waiting for stocks of the day/night switch but I will do a follow-up.

FRONT PAGE STORY

JSPCA ROBBED AT GUNPOINT

Garin Joemath 011 862 8500

During the early hours of the morning of Thursday 01 October, the night duty staff of the Johannesburg SPCA in Reuven, Booysens were held up at gunpoint during an armed robbery. Five armed men broke into their premises, hit a staff member on the head with a gun and then tied him to a chair before making off with five computers, one laptop, a big-screen television, an undisclosed amount of money and a number of cellphones. The injured staff member was taken to a doctor to receive medical attention and the JSPCA said trauma counselling will be provided to the affected staff. “At the time of the robbery there were two staff members on duty,” said JSPCA Public Relations Officer Jolene Beyleveld. “The suspects broke into the JSPCA via the front door,” she added. “According to the information that we received, the receptionist heard a noise and went to investigate and saw three unknown males run towards them. The three suspects then tied the one staff member up while the other managed to hide and telephone for help. The two suspects then ransacked the premises, taking a large amount of goods,” said Booysens SAPS Warrant Officer

Lorraine van Emmerik. Unfortunately, the suspects managed to get away. “We have opened up a case of business robbery,” said van Emmerik. Beyleveld stated: “It is appalling and disgusting that, despite all our efforts to help communities and their animals, this happens.” “No animals were harmed or stolen during the robbery. Although this terrible event happened, we are still open to treat, assist, rescue and protect animals that need our help,” added Beyleveld. The JSPCA would like to express its sincere thanks to Booysens Police Station for their quick response.

On Thursday 01 October a night vigil was held at Dalmondeor Primary School, with the community coming together to pay tribute to the policemen and women who have lost their lives in the line of duty. In an effort to pay respect to our fallen heroes, CPF Mondeor Precinct members, along with the community, lit candles to show their support in the fight against cop killings. Mondeor SAPS Lieutenant Colonel Mhlaba, JMPD Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, JHB Cluster Board Chairperson Dr Gulam, JHB Central Cluster CPF’s Michelle Pelser, Mondeor SAPS Pastor Mogamesi and Father Edom were present at the vigil.

Wednesday 23 September was a very sad day at the Johannesburg SPCA as the organisation had to bid farewell to Honey, their beloved cow. As Honey aged, she grew sickly and unfortunately it came to a point where the JHB SPCA had to make the extremely hard decision to put her to sleep. “Well my girl, we said our goodbyes; you will always be in my heart, never forgotten. You were a smashing pal. After what you had

to go through before you got here, but hey what a great life we had together, with you looking after Os as well. I know you two are back together now. Sleep well, old girl,” said JHB SPCA staff member Dave Woodward. JHB SPCA Inspector Ronald Ramalata said, “It is sad to say goodbye to a friend whom you grew up with and what makes it worse is that the heartbreaking decision needed to be made and have a final goodbye. Honey c a m e to our organisation, young like me, and the SPCA had become a home for us.”

CLOTHES TO CASH EXCHANGE Let’s admit it - we all have cupboards overflowing with clothes we haven’t worn or fitted into for ages, so let’s use this as an opportunity to spring clean our closets and also support the community. St Martin’s High School is asking you to donate any old clothes which are still in good condition that can be sold to The Clothes to Cash Exchange initiative. This initiative will pay St Martin’s R5 per kg of clothing and a further R2 per kg will go to 24/7 Cares, an NPO that the initiative supports. The school will take the money earned and

use it for various upliftment projects as well as for a Christmas party for an orphanage. The initiative will then take the clothes and sell them in underprivileged communities, thereby creating micro enterprises. So let’s get involved and support our community while re-purposing some old clothes. The clothes can be dropped off at the tame TIMES offices at 91 Michelle Avenue between 08:00am and 04:00pm from Tuesday 06 to Wednesday 14 October. For more information visit www.c2cx.co.za.

JOY DOGS DRIVE IN STYLE The JOY Dogs have ditched their yellow Honda Jazz and can now be seen driving around in a white Honda Jazz bearing new signage. “There is also a new logo for the JOY Dogs,” says JOY Dogs owner Sue Green. “Jazmine, Oscar and Yola are very happy as there appears to be more space in the rear of the car for them and they are so proud to be driven in a new Honda Jazz,” she added. The signage was d o n e by

Doug Ford Signs in Turffontein. “They did a wonderful job,” says Green. You can also look out for Oscar in the new Dulux advert featured on TV. Anyone wanting a visit from the JOY Dogs should please contact owner Sue Green on 082 455 8634 or visit www.joydogs.co.za.

COPPER CABLE BUST On Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October a Family Festival will take place at Rietvlei Zoo Farm from 10:00am to 05:00pm. Four suspects aged between 33 and 42 years were arrested for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle by JMPD on Thursday 01 October at Lenasia Road, Eikenhof during a stop-and-search operation. The suspects were driving a silver Toyota Yaris allegedly stolen in Cleveland in 2014.

Hi there, senior citizens. We don’t like to blow our own trumpets (well, not too often anyway), but it is no great secret that in this modern-day, hurly-burly society of the 21st century, grandparents are of necessity having to take a more active role in their immediate families’ activities. Most couples have to work all day just to make ends meet. This means the extra expense of running two vehicles and commuting across town to miss the busy early morning traffic, returning home late, tired and exhausted in the evening. It means Granny or Granddad are very much more involved in their grandchildren’s activities than at any other time in the past, especially when it comes to running the kids around to school and home again. In the busy afternoons the kids take on extramural activities and need further chauffeuring to dancing lessons, tennis and netball matches, extra lessons or maybe karate. You will gather that I’m speaking from experience! No more do ‘Ouma en Oupa sit op die stoep.’ Not on weekdays anyway. If you stay anywhere near your ‘kleinkinders’ you will be

more or less obliged to help out with the lift club. And what happens should one of the kids get sick? Someone has to get them to the doctor’s rooms and then fetch the medicine. Then there is the grocery shopping and cooking for fussy little appetites. Grandparents are always available when you need them and also like to be active. They certainly don’t want to stagnate on the ‘stoep’ every day and won’t mind helping out from time to time – as and when required. A happy medium is best for all concerned. It’s no bad thing to be involved with your grandchildren, spending time with them, understanding their difficulties in life and at school. Grandparents, after all, are the glue that moulds family discipline – representing respected role models and balanced lifestyles. All the kids love their grannies and grandpas because they usually have so much more time and patience to listen to their little problems and offer sensible and practical advice. They have all of life’s experiences to draw on, after all, and can illustrate their grandchildren’s difficulties with reminiscences and stories from their own lives. We all remember the

FOLLY OF SOME EVICTIONS In recent weeks there have been two ‘legal’ evictions in Ward 56, according to Ward 56 Councillor Dennis Jane. The circumstances were similar in both cases, he says. “The local sheriff arrived with his ‘staff’ and proceeded to remove the illegal tenant’s possessions from the respective houses and deposited them on the pavement – nothing unusual about that. After the job was completed, the sheriff and staff departed, as did SAPS members who were present to ensure there was no violent outbreak,” explained Clr Jane. “What is curious about each event is that no private security was

present to secure the cleared-out residences. While not a legal requirement, each owner would have spent about R10 000 in legal fees to secure the eviction. So, the small cost of additional security [would have been] a small price to pay.” “Had one of those homes been mine I would have ensured that the property was protected against re-entry. This was not done, and you guessed it - the evicted tenants moved back into the respective houses,” he added. While there is a high demand for accommodation, one of the above homes had 35+ residents, this in a two-bedroom

home, notes Clr Jane. “The evicted people’s re-entry into the homes brings about a new legal contravention. There are also questions about the validity of the eviction orders.” He added, “What would be very good is a council that has adequate numbers of building and land use inspectors who could take action and counter the effect of house hijacking and [the] overcrowding impact it has on our suburbs.” Contact Clr Jane for comment or questions on 011 435 2627 / 083 701 8856 or email dkjane@global.co.za.

Maximus occasionally patrols with the CPF. “The community will see us doing high visibility operations almost every week leading up until Christmas,” says Fontes.

good old yarns from Granny or Granddad – mainly because they were repeated so often! Of course their duties don’t necessarily end when the school holidays come along. Often this aggravates the problem. The solution might be to have the grandkids stay over and entertain them from your own house. The kids love it of course, being allowed to lie in and watch television or play TV games in bed. For them there is nothing nicer than lolling around in their ‘jammies’ for half the day, or being able to stay up late and fall asleep on the couch. And for some reason, playing games and running around the garden is so much more fun at Granny’s place. That’s because Granny pampers them, plays with them and spoils them rotten! And why not? It’s a win-win situation for all concerned – except maybe the parents? But they aren’t there and what they don’t know won’t hurt them? Kids always exaggerate, don’t they? Yes, life in the slow lane sure ain’t what it used to be. Don’t underestimate the healing powers of grandparents in the melting pot of family activities. They aren’t called the Golden Oldies for nothing. Till the next time.

your world this week Mars’ bigger

ocean

NASA research suggests that Mars once had more water than Earth’s Arctic Ocean. According to NASA scientists, who, using groundbased observatories, measured water signatures in Mars’ atmosphere, a primitive ocean on the Red Planet once held more water than the Arctic Ocean. Scientists have since been searching for answers as to why this vast water supply had left the surface. “Our study provides a solid estimate of how much water Mars once had, by determining how much water was lost to space,” said Geronimo Villanueva, a scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and lead author of the new paper. “With this work, we can better understand the history of water on Mars.” NASA’s Mars Exploration Program seeks to characterise and understand Mars as a dynamic system, including its present and past environment, climate cycles, geology and biological potential. (www.nasa.gov)

These dark, narrow, 100 meter-long streaks called recurring slope lineae flowing downhill on Mars are inferred to have been formed by contemporary flowing water. Recently, planetary scientists detected hydrated salts on these slopes at Hale crater, corroborating their original

hypothesis that the streaks are indeed formed by liquid water. The blue color seen upslope of the dark streaks are thought not to be related to their formation, but instead are from the presence of the mineral pyroxene. The image is produced by draping an orthorectified (Infrared-

Putin conscripts 150 000 new troops into Russian army Vladimir Putin has conscripted 150 000 new troops into the Russian army as the country unleashed a new wave of airstrikes in Syria, Daily Mail reported. This happened while Iran and Islamist group Hezbollah prepare for a major ground offensive. Hundreds of Iranian troops have arrived in Syria, backed by the country’s Lebanese allies, Hezbollah, and rebel fighters from Iraq and Afghanistan. A Lebanese source claimed that the Iranian ground forces were soldiers and officers,

not advisers. They are being supported by Russia’s warplanes, which bombed camps of rebel fighters trained by the CIA. Josh Earnest, the White House spokesman, said that Russia’s airstrikes in Syria were indiscriminate and risked prolonging the conflict indefinitely. He also claimed that Russia’s ‘’random’’ strikes on Syria’s enemies would draw the country deeper into the conflict. (www.dailymail.co.uk)

President Jacob Zuma was photographed on 28 September at a lunch for world leaders in New York, still holding a cellphone to his ear as US President Barack Obama greeted him with a handshake. This prompted Obama to jokingly signal a phone next to his own ear. It was the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly at United Nations headquarters in New York. The General Debate ran through to 03 October. (www.timeslive.co.za)

Krejcir planned at or tambo elaborate

escape

Eyewitness News reports have alleged there is reason to believe some Correctional Services officials may have helped Radovan Krejcir smuggle items into his prison cell, in the hope of making an escape attempt. According to the reports, Krejcir, convicted of drug dealing, kidnapping and attempted murder, had planned a dramatic escape from prison involving helicopters and luxury cars. During a recent raid of his cell, a 9mm pistol, four cellphones and other items were found hidden. An important diary was also found which may help police crack other cases. According to the reports, this was Krejcir’s fourth attempt to escape prison, but luckily information from intelligence sources prompted a raid on his cell. Several people have been questioned in relation to the event. Despite the find, police remain confident that they will be able to keep him behind bars. (www.ewn.co.za)

even remind him of Zuma. Trump criticised Mexican immigrants, accusing them of being criminals and rapists. On 01 October, Noah played a clip about the SA president speaking about foreigners. (www.ewn.co.za)

Ottilia Mmatjatji Malatji was arrested after she was caught allegedly in possession of over R4-million worth of drugs at OR Tambo International Airport. Indian toddler charged with theft Police in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh named two-year-old Ravi along with three men in a police complaint. Police attempted to arrest Ravi on Tuesday, causing his alarmed father to take him to the district court, where he explained the situation to senior police officers, whereafter Ravi’s name was taken off the complaint. A theft had been reported from Bajehra village in Sitapur on 20 September. On the basis of a complaint by the victim, as well as other villagers, police registered a case of theft and trespassing against four men, including the toddler. It isn’t clear why Ravi’s name was included in the initial complaint. The three accused adults have been arrested and lodged in jail. (www.bbc.co.uk)

Hope for Springboks Heyneke Meyer said on Sunday that he will adopt a “mixed approach” to his selection for the World Cup match against the United States tomorrow. The announcement came after the South African team continued its World Cup recovery with the most stunning result in Rugby World Cup history, by beating Scotland 34-16 on Saturday, baking up their 20-point win over Samoa the previous week to go to the top of Pool B. Just by winning in London, the Springboks will ensure safe passage to the quarterfinals. If they register four tries, it will also guarantee a log-topping finish in their

Pool. A mere four-day turnaround to the closing pool game might be the only pitfall. Meyer told Sport24 this weekend that “It is very good to have got this (Scotland) game behind us; you learn hard lessons and every single one is tough”. He added that the USA will be up for the match against the Springboks, waiting for them. He had watched their last game against Scotland and it was immensely physical. We as a nation stand behind our team. It sees the loss to Japan was just a blip for the Springboks, qualification in the first place looks likely now for the two-time Rugby World Cup champions.
