VIDEO FOOTAGE:The picture that was posted on GCF’s facebook page. A Mulbarton resident is highly aggrieved due to the accusations that his cousins attempted to hi-jack a Farnham Drive resident on 29 March. His house address and vehicle registration number were posted on Glenvista Community Forum’s facebook page on the Saturday with the statement that SAPS won’t arrest them. According to GCF they received information that a Farnham Drive resident had an attempted hijacking outside his residence and has CCTV footage of it. The resident described the suspect vehicle as a red VW Polo with the registration number with 3-4 African males possibly armed. They notified their members and the vehicle was found in Godalming Street. The resident, who moved into Goldalming Street last year November, told tame TIMES that his cousins had stayed over the night before. He asked them to use his vehicle, a Red Polo 1.9 TDi 2005 model, to take
another cousin to the doctor that Saturday. Due to them not knowing the area they got lost on their way back to his house turning into a wrong street. They made a U-turn, found his house and parked the vehicle in front of the driveway. The police and a large number of unmarked vehicles arrived at his house. The SAPS searched the vehicle and nothing was found. Cst Elizabeth Mnguni, Mondeor SAPS spokesperson said, “We followed the correct procedures and could not arrest them as there were no grounds to arrest them on. The footage shows the Red Polo making a U-turn. An inquiry of attempted hi-jacking has been opened and investigation is underway.” There are conflicting versions as GCF stated they said possibly armed however in the first sms alert, which tame TIMES has seen, it reads armed. “There is a big difference between possibly armed and armed just the same as there is a big difference between suspected hi-jackers and suspects,” Cst Mnguni said. GCF stated that the Farnham resident positively identified them on scene however the Godalming resident said when he requested the alleged victim to come forward, he was not in the crowd. “If my cousins had just attempted to hi-jack a resident a street a way from mine why would they park the car outside in public view?,” the Godalming resident asked. His other concerns are the GCF patrollers had firearms on them. He said this is the second time he has been harassed by D&D Tactical Security. Last year November he
was followed by D&D members and other people in civilian clothing. They pulled him off the road, pointed firearms at him and made him lie on the tar road. Andrew Ledwick, D&D Tactical Managing Director said, “That incident was addressed by myself with our Operations Manager and he did apologise to the resident for the mistaken identity. However I would like to say that with hundreds of arrests in the area we are bound to have a situation that leads to a false arrest.” tame TIMES requested comment from SAPS with regards to the issues raised. Cst Mnguni stated, “Security guards do not have the right to pull over members of the public, point firearms and make them lie on the ground. Should that be the case they are subjected to criminal investigation. However security guards have searching powers in their areas of responsibility - protecting the property of their clients that are subscribed to them. Members of the public, that have been pointed with firearms, unlawfully pulled over and searched by other
members of the public that have not been mandated in terms of the provision in the Constitution should not hesitate to report such incidents to their local police station. Patrollers carrying a firearm are contrary to the prescription as set out in the firearms control act is unlawful. Chapter 9 (section83 subsection 2b) stipulates that the firearm must be completely covered when carried on a person. “ The Godolming resident has opened a case of defamation of character and harrassment against GCF for the Saturday incident and a case of pointing of firearm against D&D Tactical for the incident that occured last year November. Popping success
Laurelle Williams laurelle@tametimes.co.za
FAMILY TIME: Families watch The Lion King at Pop Up Cinema at Rietvlei Zoo Farm. Pop Up Cinema’s first event was popping with success, around 520 people attended the event. Families and friends all huddled on their blankets in front of the 7x 4 meter big screen enjoying the smell and taste of the delicious food sold at the event, munching away while watching Disney’s The Lion King. Pop Up Cinema aims to take you back to when the movie was only part of the main attraction and bring back nostalgia reliving
the drive-in days with a movie in a pictureperfect environment. Popcorn, slushes and yummy food were only sale from the beginning to the end while movie goers were enjoying and enegaged in the animated movie. Pop Up Cinema will be doing other cinema events, looking at August, September, October and November. They also have some events booked for other clients that they will keep you posted on their website and facebook page.
Clients can book them out for their own events churches, corporate functions and schools or any event. Pop Up will promote your event on their site and facebook page. There was a wonderful, warm family atmosphere in the air and the sound was as clear as daylight. The picture was bright and vivid making you feel like you are actually in the movie with Simba and his family. For more information or for upcoming events visit www.popupcinema.co.za.
Fun hunting Searching for Easter eggs is always fun, especially when you can eat all your findings, and there was a lot of findings at Aspen Nature Estate on 29 March. BUNNY LOVE: The Easter bunny and his girl bunny friend.
Laurelle Williams laurelle@tametimes.co.za
The nature estate held an Easter egg hunt and family day at their clubhouse. The fun filled day had activities to keep the whole family occupied. While the children exerted all their energy on inflatable slides and searching the gardens for eggs, parents could relax in the beer garden while browsing stalls and listening to a one man band. There is nothing like neighbours getting to know each other and uniting together as a community.
EXCITEMENT: Children making the most of the day.

Tense situations
There seems to be tense situations in our community between Mondeor SAPS and Glenvista Community Forum. This worries me as we are all suppose to be on the same team fighting for the same thing, not fighting each other. I applaud GCF as well as D&D Tactical for their passion and dedication in keeping the community safe. There have been many stories published in tame TIMES on the successful arrests of criminals due to the joint efforts of these two entities. Their tremendous efforts can’t be denied and by looking at their facebook following, the community is very grateful. However by looking at the facebook page one can also see fuel has been added to the fire by residents’ response to GCF statements about Mondeor SAPS. Yes, the service of Mondeor SAPS or any police station is questionable at times and unfortunately South Africa is full of crooked cops but that doesn’t mean every cop is crooked and covering up for criminals. I can’t comment on the situation of the alleged hi-jacking, all I can say is GCF were doing their job of protecting the community and now a resident has opened a charge of defamation of character. If it is a case of mistaken identity or misunderstanding -apologies should be made. If there is evidence that they are hi-jackers it needs to be brought forward and justice must take its course. My point is how is this going to get resolved if the two entities are competing against each other instead of working together. I hope this is sorted out in a civil manner and a good working relationship can be restored. Anyway on a brighter note and totally off topic- it is my birthday today. Thirty one years of being Laurelle Williams. I take this opportunity to thank God My Heavenly Father for the life He has blessed me with. I look forward to His plan He has for me and to serve Him for the remaining years of my life.

My kleinkinders rol natuurlik net hulle oë as hulle kom kuier en hulle ouma so sien. “Ouma is so paranoïes,” sê hulle vir my.
Polo GTI belonging to my niece’s boyfriend, just having their support was amazing. Linmeyer Neighbourhood Watch is offering a very valuable service to our suburb and I, for one, am truly thankful. By the Grace of God, they were not injured or hurt, just very traumatised.

The journey of a thousand miles By Nieto Hernandez
Our journey of a thousand miles is less than a month away now. On 7 May we go to the polls to choose our new or not so new president and it seems as I mentioned last week the temperature on the political front is the direct opposite of what I’m beginning to feel from nature. We are approaching the cold season and just advice from someone who has already been booked off sick; take care of your health. Just as everyone was dealing with the news that the ANC had decided to add Minister E Steyn writes: Jimmy Choo – Dina Pule to the party’s parliamentary list. This move has excited my politically inclined mind to an unlimited amount of imaginative analysis’ on this situation; the possibilities and moves perhaps hoped for in the next few coming weeks. I think we have all heard that no one individual is bigger than the ANC and that the ANC has many capable cadres who if called up would be ready and willing to take up the challenge of leading the party and ultimately the country. These statements became popular around the time of Thabo Mbeki’s recalling back in 2009. On the strategy side of things and again using the former minister as an example. Taking green care of your community Laurelle Williams

This walk not only did the participant’s bodies well but also did the Forest Hill, Turffontien and Bellavista communities good as all litter was picked up along the route. Cotlands benefitted as all the entry fees (R20 each) went to the non-profit organisation. The route started at Hoërskool Die Fakkel in Gantner Road, into Koll, Forest, Eloff, Church, Bellavista, Stanton (where Cotlands is situated), Bishop and then back into Forest, Koll and Gantner. Pickitup supplied all participants with two refuse bags, one for papers and the other for plastic as well as gloves. Other parties

involved were City of Joburg, Pick n’ Pay, Numatic International and Upcycle. JMPD and SOS security where on hand to make sure everyone was safe on the road. tame TIMES supported the walk by entering staff members as well as supplying recycled goodie bags made out of newspapers. Each participant received a goodie bag for their green efforts. Celebrity Shashi Naidoo even brought along her dog for the walk. Sadly these areas are not in an acceptable state. On many corners old mattresses, dirty nappies and various items of rubbish are seen, not in a bag but just dumped to rot away on the sidewalk. The aim was to create a safe clean place for children to play and hopefully to inspire the residents who stay in the area to start caring for the area they live in.

The South of Joburg’s pride and glory, The Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, is passionately protected and promoted by a small but active non-profit organization, made up of a handful of selfless and knowledgeable volunteers who spend their own time and money ensuring that the Nature Reserve remains the iconic place that Joburg has come to know and love. Joburg City Parks, as the custodian of the reserve, plays a large part towards keeping
the reserve, which must be recognised, but so much more work is needed to preserve the natural biodiversity and history of the reserve, and planned projects are in urgent need of more funding. Hence the first KNRA Corporate Fundraising Golf Day will be held at the South Downs Country Club, on 28 May. Interest has already been raised with Bidvest and The Glen Shopping Centre. Pricing options R1600 per four ball. R2000 for a four ball and to sponsor one hole. R500 to sponsor a hole without entering any players. R9000 would secure the day being sponsored by an individual or organisation. This will include prime position advertising on the day and all pre-event advertising and public relations. Female bought Difference between for R1000 community forum and community policing forum Due to the situation that occurred on 29 March (pg 1) with Glenvista Community Forum (GCF). It has been brought to tame TIMES attention that Glenvista, Mulbarton and Glenanda Community Forums are not Community Policing forums. They are Section 21 companies that were formed by residents of the area. CPF Mondeor SAPS Area Chairperson Fred Dekker said, “They are currently not part of the Mondeor SAPS Community Policing Forum structures within section 19 of the police act of SAPS.They operate independently,” Cst Elizabeth Mnguni, Mondeor SAPS spokesperson said, “Mondeor SAPS is in possession of a document supplied by certain individuals of these forums that they do not want to be linked to the office of the MEC nor the Mondeor Community Policing forum. Some of these patrollers were trained and certified by the office of the MEC.” GCF charge their members a fee where as community policing forums do not charge a fee. tame TIMES requested comment from GCF as to why on their facebook page it states Glenvista Community Policing Forum even though in their bio it states they are a Section 21 company. At the time of going to print no comment had been received yet. How community policing work? *Taken from City of Johannesburg website. It is a partnership between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the community, two entities with a single aim: to rid the area of crime. “In terms of any partnership, both sides see that each is working honourably. That’s the spirit of community policing forums.” CPFs are statutory bodies, given strong powers in the 1993 interim constitution - including
monitoring the effectiveness and efficiency of the SAPS, advising police on priorities in the neighbourhood and promoting the accountability of the SAPS to local communities CPFs were left out of the final constitution in 1996 but the 1995 Police Service Act refers back to the interim constitution, noting that the role of a CPF “may” include the functions listed therein. A new set of regulations in terms of the Act, which deals with powers and responsibilities for all CPFs, is currently under review. Its preamble notes that the SAPS is accountable to the communities it serves; it adds that the Act provides for CPFs to promote communication and co-operation between the SAPS and communities and “to improve transparency and service delivery” in the SAPS. It also refers to “the partnership and joint problem-solving between communities and the SAPS”. What is a Section 21 Company? These are companies that are registered to provide services and do not intend to make, or to be judged by, the profits that they make. These “Associations Not For Gain” are often funded by donations and foreign funding. Generally they provide services to various “communities” such as children’s feeding schemes, organisations that take care of AIDS orphans, religious and charitable organisations etc. These companies are registered in terms of Section 21 of the Companies Act and are often referred to as “Section 21 Companies”. A Section 21 company must have a minimum of 7 members and at least 2 directors. Due to the complexity of the compilation of the Memorandum and Articles of a company, the services of a legal practitioner should be used in the preparation of the documentation. Note: A Company Not For Gain is also referred to as an “Association Incorporated under Section 21”
Three suspects were arrested by Cst Muvhango and Sergeant Galane for kidnapping and possession of drugs in High Street, Rosettenville on 23 March. The two members received a complaint of kidnapping which took place in Springs. The police accompanied the female complainant to the house in Rossettenville where she was kept. She also informed them that the foreign nationals who bought her sells drugs. The victim pointed out the male who bought her for R1000 from another foreign national male in Springs. The SAPS searched the house and found a pink bag under the bed, inside the bag was two small bottle containers with drugs inside; 18x rocks, 1xcat and 4x crystal drugs and plastic of dagga and four cell phones. The three suspects, one male and two females were arrested and taken to Moffatview SAPS.
Dagga found in South Hills A suspect was arrested by Flying Sqaud members, Cst Bilankulu and Cst Muvhali, for possession of dagga in 2 April in Steelpoort Street, South Hills. The members were doing stop and searches when they spotted an unknown male and asked to search him. The person agreed and was searched by Cst Bilankulu and dagga was found in the front pocket of his tracksuit. The member asked the suspect to go back to his room so that they can search the house; the members found another packet containing a small zip lock bag full of dagga. The male was arrested and taken to Moffatview SAPS.

The credit amnesty The Department of Trade and Industry, on 27 February, published the Removal of Adverse Consumer Information and Information Relating to Paid Up Judgments Regulations, 2014 (‘the credit amnesty’) which came into effect on 1 April. This removal is applicable to all consumers as defined by the National Credit Act (NCA). How does amnesty affect credit bureau data? There are two parts to the credit amnesty information removal process, one relates to a Once-off removal and the other relates to On-going removal of information. The credit amnesty means that all consumers who are listed on the credit bureaus with the following negative information as at 1 April, will have this information removed from the records of the credit bureaus by the 1 June in accordance with Regulation 2 (b). Once-off removal 1.
Removal of all adverse information (irrespective if paid or unpaid) which includes: 1.1 Negative classifications of consumer behaviour such as ‘default’, ‘delinquent’ or ‘slow paying’; 1.2 Negative classification of enforcement action, including classifications such as ‘legal action’ or ‘write-off’; 1.3
Negative status codes as reflected on consumer payment profiles.
1.4 You are still responsible to pay your unsettled debt (including interest and costs) even if your adverse credit information has been removed from your credit bureau record.
2.
Removal of paid-up civil court judgements where the consumer has settled the capital amount:
08 April 2014
Working for Madiba- R5m raised for good causes
2.1 For Judgments, the consumer does not have to approach the courts or pay a lawyer to have his/her name removed. 2.2 Once he/she has paid the capital amount and provided a proof of payment it will be removed. On-going removal requirements Going forward removal of all paid up judgements on an on-going basis as per the regulations in the credit amnesty; and paid up adverse information listings as per the National Credit Amendment Bill which is still to be promulgated. The credit amnesty does not mean that consumer’s credit obligations no longer exist, but rather that certain negative records regarding the manner in which they have previously managed their obligations will no longer be held on the records of the credit bureaus. Regulation 2 (h) provides an ambiguity which may mean that credit bureaus may not be able to return negative information held on the records of the credit bureau with effect from 1st April 2014. We will revert to you in this regard once we have clarified the position with the DTI. Regulation 2 (i) provides for the removal of paid up judgments within 7 days of proof of payment. No process or verification is stipulated in the credit amnesty and we thus urge credit providers to work with credit bureaus in order to verify the accuracy of this information within the 7 days in order to minimize the risk of fraud. Should you have any queries in the above regard please contact Brian Jean Blignaut brianjean@nudebt.co.za

Ndu Ngwenya ndu@tametimes.co.za Pick n Pay hosted a meeting to thank customers, staff and franchisees for their tremendous response on 15 December 2013(the day of former President Nelson Mandela’s funeral) when the company decided to open its stores and donate all profits to charities which honoured Madiba’s legacy. As a result of its “Working for Madiba” day, Pick n Pay’s regional teams donated R500 000 to help provide equipment to children’s homes, orphanages and care facilities around the country. Pick n Pay will in addition hand the new Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Gauteng a cheque for R4.5 million to build and equip a specialist unit. Pick n Pay’s CEO Richard Brasher said, “By opening our stores on Sunday 15 December, we gave our staff and customers an opportunity to contribute in a very tangible way to Mr Mandela’s legacy. We pledged that all profits from sales that day would go to worthy causes. I was truly humbled by the amazing response from our staff and our customers. “I am delighted that, as a result, Pick n Pay is giving R4.5m to the building of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Gauteng. This includes a generous contribution from our franchisees. In addition, our regional teams will donate R0.5m to help provide equipment for children’s homes, orphanages and care facilities in their areas. The total sum of R5m donated to good causes significantly exceeded our day’s profits. “I want to thank everyone involved – in particular our staff, our franchisees and our customers – for this great tribute to Nelson Mandela.” An external audit by KPMG confirmed that the calculation of profits was conducted on an appropriate basis, and that the amount donated to good causes exceeded the day’s profits.
Ms Sibongile Mkhabela , CEO of the Nelson Mandela’s Children’s Hospital said, “We are grateful to Pick n Pay for this very generous donation. Pick n Pay wanted to ensure that the proceeds of their excellent “Working for Madiba” initiative went to a cause which as stated by Mrs Machel was Mr Mandela’s last wish - you are enabling this wish and honouring his legacy” Pick n Pay’s Transformation Director Suzanne Ackerman-Berman added, “December 15, 2013 was a day many of us will never forget. Around the country we opened our stores, served our customers, spent time mourning together, knowing that all our efforts would go to help those in need”. Roulette Master wins Dining out of this galaxy R1.9 million Amy-Mae Campbell @Amzymaeq twitter.com
ROULETTE WINNER: Neil Singh with his prize. Tsogo Sun launched their first national Roulette Masters Tournament in January this year. The seven lucky finalists played the grand final on 29 March at Gold Reef City Casino, where Neil Singh, representing Monte Casino, won the R1.9 million cash prize. This was the highest prize ever in a R100 buy-in roulette tournament. Even though there were over 20 000 entries into the tournament, Singh’s family said after the tournament that he never doubted his chances of winning: “When he saw the competition, he said ‘This competition is mine’,” said Singh’s daughter, Roshika Seonandan. Singh’s has always loved gambling, which prepared him for the big leagues. Singh, however, attributes his success to game strategy and his 15-month-
old grandson, Liam; his “lucky charm.” Singh was already ranked top player going into the final and he also had a proxy player, who took a second seat representing Singh at the table of finalists. Throughout the tournament Singh was making high bets, while his proxy was playing it safe up until the final betting round. “The strategy was to go big to get in front, if it does not work, I have my proxy. He was given clear instructions on how to play,” said Singh. Singh’s family supported him all the way and are very proud of him: “I am on top of the world. I couldn’t even stand and watch; I was too nervous,” said his wife Fiona. Singh is still contemplating how he wants to spend his money, but he is not ready to part with his fortune just yet. “I will probably put it away,” he said with a content smile.
Recognised as one of the best restaurants in Johannesburg, Galaxy Grill at The Glen Shopping Centre, offers a dining experience out of this world. The restaurant offers a unique combination of elements which are sure to impress while catering for even the most diverse family. tame TIMES had the opportunity to experience Galaxy Grill with the help of its boisterous branch manager Dewald . The first thing one would notice when entering Galaxy Grill is the minimalist and almost industrial yet clearly stylish décor which adds to the appeal of the restaurant. Then its layers are gradually exposed, thankfully tame TIMES had Dewald to see them through one of the South’s treasures. Apart from the main dining floor Galaxy Grill has a children’s section, fully kitted with gaming consoles to keep the little ones busy and a dimly lit cigar lounge to keep the gentlemen busy. On the food side of things the evening started off with a mushroom dish; which consisted of a brown mushroom topped with creamed spinach, bacon, breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese, and delicious snails
prepared in a creamy garlic source topped with breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese. The generous portions from the Starters menu were followed up by equally delectable selections from the mains menu; a full flavoured 300g Rump steak with melted cheese and a blend of peppadew and jalapenos and a Spare rib and prawns combo washed down with freshly prepared cocktails. The evening was surely made, but Galaxy still had more secretes to reveal. According to Dewald, cheese cake is the first thing he asks for when eating out, and if a place doesn’t serve it, it’s not worth consideration. So it was no surprise that one of the desserts on the cards was a lemon cheese cake while the other lesson baring offering was a chocolate mousse served with a fragrant ground coffee. Galaxy Grill which opened its doors in 2012 is still a work in progress and will be revealing exciting developments in the coming months, the best way to wait, in our experience, is to do so over the currently offered speciality dishes.
Sizzling soul sista
The Big Top Arena at Carnival City was sizzling on 2 April and the good vibration was all due to the 1.78 meter blonde English soul singer Jocelyn Eve Stoker better known as Joss Stone. Stone characteristically wowed her South African audience dancing bare foot and singing her heart out baring her soul with her Total World Tour. The voice and power that comes out this elegant free-spirit is mesmerising. Her dancing and stage presence is so real and reflects “what you see is what you get with Joss Stone”. There are no airs or graces- just a talented musician who is sharing her passion and stories with her fans. Stone described soul music as ‘having to be meant and felt and if you don’t know how to
Laurelle Williams @laurellewilliam twitter.com
do that then you just get loud’ and Stone did all three. She meant what she was singing, she felt what she was singing and she got loud while singing. The eclectic soul group The Muffinz opened for Stone and got the diverse crowd (young and old) into the mood. Stone set the tone for the night when she told everyone to get out their chairs and dance and this was five minutes into the show. A lucky female fan is now the proud owner of Stone’s bracelet that was driving her mad as she couldn’t lift up her arm to dance with it on -so she gave it away. One of the many highlights of the show was when she performed Loliwe with our very own Zahara as well as performing with Bongiwe from The Muffinz. Her love and appreciation for music was seen as she genuinely thanked them after performing the song. Songs like Power to the people, Right to be wrong, You had me, I want to give you some good loving and many more could be heard. Joss Stone undoubtedly sang her soul into South African souls.

Ford sales up 21.5% over March 2013
Sales records continue to be set at Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa during March as the brand continues its steady growth in the South Africa’s new vehicle market. Ford sales grew 13.9% over February and 21.5% versus March last year, continuing to drive Ford’s performance well beyond the market’s. The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) recorded a 0.2% decline in new vehicle sales year-onyear. “While the overall market appears to have flattened in place of the declines experienced in January and February, Ford sales growth continues,” said FMCSA’s General Manager, Rob Crouse. “While year-to-date new vehicle sales are down 3.4% compared to the first quarter of 2013, Ford sales are up 29.1%.” Ford’s locally assembled Ranger set yet another all-time
sales record during March, selling 2 162 units. “Good consumer demand through the dealer network and good supply increased Ranger sales 11.4% over our previous all-time record,” said Crouse. Another all-time record came from Transit, which enjoyed its biggest sales month since launch. Consistent demand across the entire Ford range continued to drive sales. “Strong consumer demand for Figo continues to reinforce the market demand for affordable mobility, while the economic pressures currently being experienced by consumers - including record fuel prices - continues to make smart technologies like Ford’s economical EcoBoost powertrains found in Fiesta, Focus, EcoSport and Kuga more appealing than ever,” said Crouse. Figo delivered 1 203 new sales during March, 10.1% ahead of February, while Kuga sales were 3% up on February as the innovative SUV continues to gain more popularity. The South African new vehicle market ended March on 55 363 units. Passenger cars were 2.2% down, while Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) were up 3.7%. “The decision to contain interest rates will put some consumer confidence back into the market,” said Crouse. “As will the smaller-than-expected fuel price increase this week and recovering exchange rates, which, while not giving motorist’s ultimate reprieve, should boost market sentiment to some extent.”

Balance Rhythm Dedication (BRD) Boxing Promotions are having their first fight night tournament of the year on Thursday 10 April at Gold Reef City Casino. This is the fifth year that Gold Reef City will be hosting the event. GRC has sponsored R50 000 towards the BRD association. BRD hopes to get more sponsors on board in future to support their aspiring fighters. According to Manny Fernandes, the BRD fighters’ trainer and manager, the upcoming tournament is a fantastic opportunity for amateur boxers to climb the ranks in the boxing industry: “BRD developmental tournaments already produced three world champs and ten SA champs. We prepare grass-root level fighters for bigger and better things,” Fernandes said.
Many respected fighters, who are boasting with South African and World Champion titles, have passed through the BRD developmental tournaments. A few of these champions include: Kaizer Mabuza, Walter Dlamini and Isaac Hlatshwayo. Kaizer Mabuza, former South African and World Welter Weight Boxing Champion, joined BRD in 2007, and he is still a member. Fernandes and his co-trainers at BRD supported Mabuza all the way to the top. Before Mabuza joined BRD, he had no titles; now he has achieved four belts in three years. Fernandes emphasises that boxing is not merely a sport, but also a means of getting kids involved in something constructive to keep them out of trouble. Fernandes extends a heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported them with the upcoming
tournament, and hopes to get more sponsors on board in future. OFF THE PITCH
Close but no Cigar
The Proteas have once again failed to deliver the goods in their quest of winning a major ICC tournament. What happened? My take: the loss to India in the semi-final was about poor decision making, and in particular very bad bowling at the death. Two young novices with little experience, in Parnell and Hendricks, it’s surely too big a burden on these lads to carry in such a big game, and produce the goods, and hoping we will secure a win.In hindsight it is easy to criticize after one has lost, but Faf Du Plessis and the Proteas management got it totally wrong with who bowled when, during the final overs of the game. Our premium bowler, Dale Steyn, was not really given the opportunity to make an impact at the right moments during the game against India, when it counted; and this certainly cost the Proteas. Wides and more wides throughout the semi-final was probably the reason the
Proteas actually lost. We should have defended 40 runs from four overs, but as I mentioned earlier, the young and inexperienced duo of Parnell and Hendricks were not geared to handle the pressures of such a big task of a major ICC semi-final. Arguably the best death bowler in any format of the game, the experienced Lasith Malinga, proved in the World T20 Final against India on Sunday that it is imperative that your best bowler in the team bowls at the right time during the game. I am not sure that we are ready to win a major title just yet, as it would seem that we are reliant on one, maybe two match winners, in AB DeVilliers and Dale Steyn Sri Lanka have Dilshan, Sangakarra, Matthews and more players who, consistently perform in all formats of the game, which results in winning titles. We need to step up and take our game to the next level and win a major title.
