What to do if you see a stray animal
You are driving in your car and see a stray dog wandering around, looking lost. What should you do? Below is advice from the JSPCA: Firstly you need to ensure your own safety. You cannot help the animal if you become

injured or are in an unsafe situation. An animal that is lost, frightened or possibly ill can behave unpredictably. A simple move like opening your car door can cause the dog to run away and possibly be hit by another vehicle. Do not chase the animal. The animal may be a couple of meters away from his house and by chasing the animal will cause him to become lost. When you approach the animal, speak calmly and try enticing him/her using strong smelling food such as tuna. You can try lure the dog into your vehicle, but do so with caution as it
isn’t a good idea to drive with a strange dog unrestrained in your car. It is very difficult, even for SPCA staff, to catch a dog that is running frantically in the road. To prevent the animal from being injured or causing an accident, we ask the caller to please get the animal into a confined area. Please do contact JPCA immediately and be as descriptive as possible such as what the nearest corner is, any landmarks, what direction the dog is moving in etc. You can call JSCPA during working hours or their duty inspector is available 24 hours a day for injured stray animals. Remembering what Jesus done for us
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”- John 3:16 I trust that everyone had a blessed Easter, enjoyed time off work and that a lot of chocolate bunnies were eaten but most of all I hope that this time was taken to reflect what Jesus did for us. He died on the cross for us so all of our sins could be forgiven and that we could spend eternal life with our Heavenly Father. Now many think salvation is only about going to heaven but God doesn’t only want that, He wants an intimate relationship with us right now as we live on earth. He craves to become part of our lives now. I look back when I wasn’t a believer and to my life now and there is a massive difference. I have peace in my life now, my life isn’t perfect and never will be but yet I am content, fulfilled and loved yet still so hungry for more of Him as he makes me feel so good and secure. God is a god of love, healing and restoration and ever since I gave my life to him two and half years ago my life has been blessed in every single aspect. I pray that everyone could experience this- the freedom of knowing that your life is in the hands of a Father who loves you so much and there is someone there who wants to carry your burdens for you. If you just handed everything over to Him and trust in Him, you will experience the joy that God gives His children. It is something that cannot be described, only felt. I have to admit my excitement grows as my relationships deepens with God. I know I still have leaps and bounds to go but I am forever thankful to Jesus for dying on the cross so my Father could see me as pure as white snow even though I am not. Thank you Jesus.

The City of Joburg’s waste management entity Pikitup would like to wish all residents and business owners of Johannesburg well over the coming holidays. In their efforts to ensure that the City remains clean during this period they would like to confirm that refuse collection will continue as usual. Residents and businesses are urged to ensure that their bins are left out by 07:00 in order to assist in the unhindered collection of refuse on the day.
CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF EDUCATION: MEC Barbara Creecy.
Parallel sessions of discussion took place after Dr Martin Prew gave an overview of the 20 year review in the GDE. The Review outlines some of the notable achievements by the Province with regard to public education: • Ordinary schooling has grown by 59%, from 1.3 million learners in 1994 to 2.1 million today, a massive increase of 809 334 learners. • In Special Schools, numbers have risen by 65%, from 25 515 to 42 058 learners today. • The recruitment and distribution of teachers has increased from 44 020 across the public school system in 1995 to 54 803, to meet the challenges of increasing learner numbers. • In special schools, teacher numbers are
up by 50% since 1995, growing from 2028 to 3059 teachers in 2014. The MEC pointed out that the number of learners writing matric had increased by 33% since 1996, with numbers rising from 73,164 to 97,897. The matric pass rate increased from 61% in 1994 to 87% last year given a total increase of 43% when compared to that of 1994. The MEC noted that the flow through rate of Gauteng learners is the best in the country. A measure used to see how many learners stay in school from grade 1 through to grade 12 showed that 65% of Grade 1 learners who started in 2002 reached grade 12 in 2013, compared with 42% who made it from Grade 1 in 1995 to Grade 12 in 2006. “All of these successes must be seen against the backdrop of a growing number of no fee schools and this means in practical terms, that education is free for the majority of our children in Gauteng public schools,” said MEC Creecy. MEC Creecy highlighted three areas for focus going forward, these are: • Teacher development • A Social Plan to address issues such as bullying, school violence, and ill-discipline. • School governance, including improvement of training for governing bodies. Interesting facts • Since 1994, the department had built 153 new primary schools and 128 new secondary schools. • Over 7069 classrooms were built in existing schools to meet the increased demand for schools in the province. • 11 946 toilet seats were provided to meet the demand or as replacements for dilapidated toilets. • 300 administration blocks, 204 media centres, 443 multi-purpose classrooms and 1204 computer centres were built to ensure that incomplete schools were provided with the necessary structures to ensure that they became fully functional schools. • 611 Grade R classrooms in schools.

The Gauteng Department of Education hosted a conference on 15 April at Turffontein Race Course to reflect on the provisioning of public sector education in the province since the advent of democracy. The conference arises out of an independent review conducted into public schooling in Gauteng from 19942014. The review, conducted by independent academic researchers under the auspices of Wits School of Education, was commissioned by the department in 2013. “We thought it prudent that as we celebrate twenty years of democracy in our country, we should also use this time to reflect on the gains made and the road ahead,” said Gauteng Education MEC, Barbara Creecy. The conference, which brought together various stakeholders from the education sector aimed to: Present the outcomes of the Review; to provide a platform for a constructive discussion; to discuss progress to date and the remaining gaps; to share new and emerging challenges as well as the defining priorities for the next 20 years; to advance knowledge and research based implementation of strategies and policies and to promote inclusivity and accountability amongst all stakeholders engaged in the delivery of education.

For Green and Blue routes, expect bush riding at its best – remember this, is mountain biking, not gravel-road cycling. Riders like the hills at Thaba Trails because there isn’t that much gradient-rich trail riding elsewhere close to the city. This gives you some properly challenging climbs and descent, some long and winding and others steep and sketchy. Bole has ensured that all levels (skills and fitness) are catered for at Thaba Trails making it a great family riding destination. Incredibly, it’s just 8 km from the Johannesburg city limits, but there are times when you are riding at Thaba that feels like you’re far from the madness of the country’s biggest city. There’s a coffee shop, a bike shop and arts and crafts stalls for non-riding friends or family to browse. The Panorama Shopping Centre is also across the road should your non-riding spouse/friend/ partner want a
more commercial environment to spend time in while you ride. Directions: From the N3 (around the East of Johannesburg) or the N1 (around the West of Joburg), take the N12 and hugs the head south (away from the city).Travel 6.5km down Klipriver Drive. On your left you will see the Panorama Shopping Centre, take the next right turn into the Thaba Trails gate.

Woman caught shoplifting Tik user found A suspect was arrested on 11 April for possession of drugs by Cst Malatji and W/O Nkabinde of Moffatview SAPS. The two officers entered a house looking for a suspect with a warrant of arrest and found an unknown male. The officers searched him and found one transparent sachet with crystal tik drugs in his left front packet of his tracksuit. Cst Malatji asked what he was doing with these drugs and he said that he was smoking it. The male was arrested for possession of drugs and taken to Moffatview Police Station.
A female suspect was arrested for possession of stolen goods on 13 April at Foschini The Glen for shoplifting. The unknown female entered the shop with a brown bag made by brown tape, hidden in her handbag. She took the clothes and put them inside the brown bag. The value of the clothing was R1800. Increase in theft Armed robbers nabbed before pouncing of valuables Four suspects, aged between 21 to 34 years of age, were arrested at Value Market, Southgate on 15 April for conspiracy to commit robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms. Mondeor SAPS received information that
a shop in Value Market was going to be robbed. The police waited for the suspects and nabbed them before they could rob the store. The suspects were detained at Mondeor SAPS.
Moffatview SAPS would like to make the community who fall within the Moffatview precinct aware of the increase in theft of valuables left in cars. They would like to encourage community members to park their cars inside their yards.

Poor administration by Social Development and Child Welfare Mrs Pretorius writes: With regards to last week’s front page article. I’ve heard stories of crèches were the teachers give kids medication to make them sleep. But this is shocking. A lot of what’s happening comes down to poor administration by Social Development and Child Welfare. How often do they send out inspectors to examine these facilities and check if these organisations are registered and are compliant? I had an incident with a well known crèche in Alberton. When I reported the incident to Social Development, the only words to me were,: “we asked the crèche to register with us to become legal”. They over looked my
complaint and swept it under the carpet. A note to all parents, please check that the facility your kids are attending is registered with the relevant departments. Walk into the facility and see what’s happening behind the scenes, don’t stand at the door waiting for your kid to arrive, walk in to collect them. Do you know for sure that your child is sleeping on a clean mattress, or do you take the word of the crèche that it is so? Do you know what they had to eat during the day? I challenge you to do this; you may be shocked to see what the truth is. Why wait for something like this to happen before action is taken.

A male was arrested in Kenilworth on 9 April by Booysens SAPS for possession of dagga. The SAPS members were doing stop and search operations when they apprehended the suspicious male. Blood stock levels in the red during vacation period With the Easter period behind us, SANBS blood stock levels is expected to be impacted. Blood stock levels become of great concern over the holiday periods as many of our regular donors are on leave. The constant demand for blood supply places the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) under immense pressure during this time. Traditionally, the month of April is a difficult time owing to the number of holidays. There are not enough blood drives and initiatives to fill the gaps left by the absence of educational institutions. SANBS needs to maintain a stock level of 5 days at all times by collecting 3000 units of blood per day and this becomes very difficult to achieve. “Blood donation needs to be made a priority, as this small act has a huge impact on the patients who depend on transfusions for their survival,” Vanessa Raju, Communications Manager of SANBS said. Blood donation is a simple act of kindness that can save up to three lives. People between the ages of 16 and 65, weighing more than 50kg, who are in good health and lead a safe sexual lifestyle, may donate blood every 56 days. Pensioners have had their fair share of working most of their lives with some pensioners still working. As we all know the government older person’s grant is not much and the cost of living is ever increasing so tame TIMES calls on the community to love our pensioners and offer them pensioner’s discount. Below are some great specials for pensioners to make use of.
How do you qualify for government old person’s grant? *Information taken from www.services.gov.za. You can get a grant to see you through your old age. An older persons grant is paid to people who are 60 years or older. This grant used to be called the old age pension. In order to qualify you must: - be a South African citizen or permanent resident - live in South Africa - not receive any other social grant for yourself - not be cared for in a state institution - not earn more than R49 200 per year or own assets worth more than R831 600 if you are single - not have a combined income of more than R99 840 per year if you are married, and you and your spouse must not have assets worth more than R1 663 200.
How much will you get? The maximum amount that you will get is R1 350 per month. If you are older than 75 years, you will get R 1 350 + R20 = R1 370 How will you be paid? The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) will pay the grant to you through one of the following methods: - cash at a specific pay point on a particular day - electronic deposit into your bank or Postbank account (the bank may charge you for the service) - institutions (e.g. old age home). Note: If you are unable to collect the money yourself, you can appoint a procurator at the SASSA
office, or give someone power of attorney to collect the grant on your behalf. When will your grant lapse? The grant will lapse when you: - pass away - are admitted to a state institution - do not claim for three consecutive months - are absent from the country.

It has been a two year process for Anne Ebrahim to register Angels Baby Sanctuary and they finally opened their doors to their first new born Baby, Thando, last month,” Tandi Potgieter of Rampage Modelling Agency said. Qualified to represent SA Six Alexandra Trampoline Club (ATC) gymnasts, Phaphama Nxumalo, Nombulelo Masilo, Xolani Nxumalo, Offering Tlaka, Sicelo Mabizela and Michael Schmidt, have been selected to represent South Africa at the 2014 Indo Pacific Championships, taking place in Sun City from 29 June to 5 July. “This competition is self-funding, meaning that in order to participate these gymnasts will need to raise funds to pay their own costs i.e. Accommodation, transport, competition attire, entry fees etc. R12000 per gymnast is required in order to participate. Any financial help, which will enable these talented gymnasts to participate and represent South Africa, will be most appreciated,” Glenda Schmidt, ATC Coordinator, said. The South African Rowing team recently participated in the International Memorial Paolo D’Aloja Regatta in Italy, JHB South Olympian Sizwe Lawrence Ndlovu was among the elite athletes chosen to present the county. This prestigious regatta took place from the 11-13 April in the province of Piediluco and was the 28th annual regatta of its kind. Ndlovu took part in the Lightweight Men’s Single Sculls (LMX1) event and the Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls (LMX2) with team mate John Smith. Ndlovu won his heat on the Friday in a time of 7:07:92
