Glenvista residents vote in USA Laurelle Williams

laurelle@tametimes.co.za Last Wednesday 30 April over 26 000 South Africans casted their votes abroad at South African missions around the world. Glenvista residents Andre and Sarah Wissler, who are

holidaying in the United States of America, voted in Washington DC and shared their experience with tame TIMES. “Washington DC was having flood warnings but this didn’t deter us from getting up, finding the Embassy on the GPS and making our way there. We

walked up the road in the pouring rain, full of excitement about doing our civic duty and casting our vote. We got to the embassy and they were all set and ready to go and we were greeted with a big smile.” “While my husband and I were filling in our forms to vote more South Africans made their way into the embassy. There was such a sense of patriotism, it was fantastic. We were checked off the voting roll, had our thumb marked with ink and handed the stamped ballot sheet with two envelopes. I went behind the screen, cast my vote, put it into one envelope then the other into the ballot box,” Sarah said. “We were taking pictures with the SA flag and we got photo bombed by a fellow SA voter not wanting to miss out. Everyone was happy about doing their duty to the country, and taking pictures to prove it.” The Wisslers went to visit family, who work for Sasol, in Houston in Texas. Their family members flew in to join the Wisslers on their holiday and to vote in Washington. The Wissler’s had the assistance of Clr Paul Smit with the administration of voting abroad. Six weeks before their trip they had to fill in a VEC 10 form to inform the IEC that they were intending on voting in the USA. Once they were registered, the IEC confirmed. According to the Wissler’s, the process was quite easy.

Children from St Mary’s Children’s Home, which is situated in Rossettenville, were spoiled by Thaba Ya Batswana last week. The children got to spend the afternoon at the Eco Hotel playing in the outside area of Kraal Kombuis. They were treated to a delicious meal and the best of all they visited Lombardi Lions where they interacted with lion cubs. The children were placed in groups of 10 when visiting the lions. They heard a predator educational talk before they had the once in a lifetime experience of coming face to face with a lion cub. Some of the children were scared at first however once one child held a cub the rest quickly followed, not wanting to miss out on the fun. “This day was just about spoiling the children,” Marguerite Erasmus, Thaba Ya Batswana’s marketing manager said. Lombardi Lions is situated at Thaba Ya Batswana and houses eight lion cubs. Retha Lombard, the marketing director of Lombardi Lions explained to tame TIMES that they have had a lion breeding farm in the North West for the past 16 years. The lion cubs come from the farm to the facility in Johannesburg for a period between 6 to 12 weeks then go back to the farm. The lion cub can’t be younger than 4 weeks or older than six months. “We don’t just put the lions on show we also offer and education predator programme,” Lombard said. For more information on Lombardi Lions please contact Retha Lombard on 071 887 5656. St. Mary’s Children’s Home is situated at 42 Zinnia Street, Rosettenville. Contact: 011 435 3820

Election Day 7 May is here. Tomorrow will afford South Africans, well the ones who actually took an interest in our country and registered, the opportunity to say who they want to govern the country. We will make our mark and our voices will be heard. I found myself giving a very patriotic speech at my church home group last week urging them to vote if they had registered. Re-iterating what I heard at the Anthems of Democracy show a week back, that with the freedom that we have been given, comes responsibility and that responsibility as a South African citizen is to ensure that we do not go back to where we were and to make sure we move forward. We can only do this if we actively take a stand and vote. I was also intrigued by social media with comments on whether ex-pats should be allowed to vote.(See page 10). This is a very interesting question as some views are that if you ran away you shouldn’t have a say. It makes me question- if you are staying there and have been for over 10 years why are you voting? In hopes to one day come back to a better country- with less crime and corruption? Let’s say that does happen an ex-pat comes back to SA as the country has improved for the better (according to their standards). Will they be able to appreciate what they have because they don’t really have the memories of what it took to get here- they were too busy making money in the UK and experiencing the most dreadful weather. However another valued point I read was that ex-pats still have family staying in SA so they use their vote in hopes to make a change for their family staying here. The argument can go on forever. But in my thinking if you are voting because you know you have a responsibility to your country- I say vote away. Let’s see what tomorrow brings us.

By-Election DA candidates

CONFIDENT: Manny de Freitas MP (Political head for Joburg South Constituency); Clr Tyrell Meyers; Faeeza Chame (ward 57 candidate); Clr Bongani Baloyi (Executive Mayor of Midvaal) and Mohammed Alex Christians (ward 58 candidate). The Joburg South Constituency hosted a successful rally for the community. Manny de Freitas, Political head and Member of Parliament for Johannesburg South, and Clr Bongani Baloyi, the Executive Mayor of Midvaal, were the keynote speakers at the rally. “We are very excited as we are going to do well in Gauteng on Election Day,” said de Freitas. The Mayor of Midvaal, Bongani Baloyi told the packed hall that where the DA governs it governs differently to where the ANC governs. “Where the DA governs opportunities are created, employment is created and our government does all this without corruption; just like we do in Midvaal,” explained Mayor Baloyi. The DA candidates for two up-coming byelections were presented to everyone. DA ward 57 candidate, Faeeza Chame, a community member who has lived in the area for

many years was presented. “It is time that we use our power of the vote to vote this corrupt government out,” Chame told a supportive crowd. She said that people are sick and tired of the crime and grime and now is the time for change. DA ward 58 candidate, Mohammed Alex Christians was also introduced to all present. Christians greeted everyone in isiZulu and said that action is needed. “Our community has been neglected long enough. We have created an environment of mistrust with our community and I want to change this,” Christians explained. Manny de Freitas said that the two candidates have injected new energy into the campaign and into their respective communities; people are now motivated more than ever to vote as every vote counts. “This will only contribute more to our success come election day,” de Freitas concluded.

4281 consumer complaints

In the first nine months since the appointment of the Consumer Goods and Services Ombudsman, Advocate Neville Melville, in June 2013, the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud (CGSO) dealt with 4281 cases against retailers and suppliers. Between 1 June 2013 and 31 March 2014, the office closed 71% or 3049 of these cases. “It is pleasing to note that since opening our doors we have been able to help thousands of consumers resolve disputes with suppliers across a range of sectors,” Melville said. “It shows the need for an independent mediator, outside of the expensive court system, to seek fair resolutions for all parties.” On average, it took the office 16 days to close a case, although more complicated cases took around 74 days. Melville added, “There is no doubt that consumers are becoming more aware of their rights and also more demanding, which leads to more time-consuming cases. The challenge is in striking the balance between the rights and responsibilities of both consumers and suppliers.” The furniture sector topped the list of complaints, with 600 complaints lodged during the period. Telecommunications companies followed with 444 complaints; motor vehicles (378); appliances (387); clothing (208) and financial services (166). The types of complaints received by the office were mostly around the delivery and quality of goods or defects in goods; food safety; incorrect pricing; availability of advertised specials; performance of services; lay-by; and contractual arrangements. Complaints which related to credit and motor vehicle industries were referred to the relevant ombud scheme. “It’s been three years since the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) was implemented and businesses have responded by improving their customer service, ADVOCATE: Neville Melwhile consumers are ville. more demanding when it

comes to disputes,” he added. “There has definitely been a step-change in the way that many companies treat their customers; however the response to the CPA differs from industry-to-industry and size of organisation.” He believes that many big suppliers have come to grips with process of complaints and returns and, with the exception of cell phone companies, are not insisting on are pair instead of a replacement or refund. “There will always be leaders and it’s now about encouraging others to follow their good example.”

Neil Diamond (ANC Task Team Head), Minister Naledi Pandor (Minister of Home Affairs) and Moses Makwakwa (ANC Regional Chair)

Thoughts from a leader of tomorrow

Why was CGSO set up? The CGSO was set up in 2013 to reduce the burden of consumer complaints on the National Consumer Commission. Amongst its main work, the CGSO seeks to ensure that suppliers uphold the Code of Conduct for the Consumer Goods and Services Industry, which sets minimum standards of conduct for industry when dealing with consumers. Meville believes that consumers are more aware of their rights when it comes to complaining, but said they still tend to cling to the myth that they have a cooling off period in terms of every transaction. “There is still a need to educate consumers about this in particular and of their responsibilities in general,” Melville explained. “We’re working towards a situation where suppliers appreciate the value of independent third party dispute resolution as an extension of the customer value chain and where customers feel they are getting a fair and equitable deal in the process.” He emphasises that the growth of social media as a channel for customer engagement– both positive and negative - has spurred many bigger businesses to improve their customer relations. “Ina connected world, it’s much easier and quicker for negative publicity about the way they handle their customers to impact their reputation and bottom line,” Melville said. “Most sales agreements are now in line with the legislation and most companies have set up the necessary processes and procedures for dealing with consumer complaints.” But smaller suppliers remain hostile to CPA. “They seem to be denial or angry when their customers complain.” CGSO share call helpline (0860 000272)

Minister urges to collect smart ID Minister of Home Affairs, Naledi Pandor visited suburban communities as part of the ANC Suburban Task Team program. The Minister has made an appeal to members of the public who have applied for temporary ID documents as well as Smart ID cards to collect their uncollected cards at the designated Home Affairs offices across the metro. Mr Moses Makwakwa, Regional Chairman of the ANC advised people that have lost their ID documents that they will not be able to vote on 7. For this reason, and to support voters, Home Affairs have increased their office hours and also prioritized issuance of first time ID’s. Since the roll-out of the Smart ID cards in February 2014 a total of 100 000 smart ID card applications have been received and processed. Of the 100 000 smart ID cards processed only 58 715 have been collected with 41 285 uncollected smart ID’s in Home Affairs offices around the country.

Page 5

Minister Pandor said “We encourage those who have not collected their IDs to do so as a priority. Similarly we advise all citizens who have applied for the new Smart ID cards to visit offices of application to collect them.” Neil Diamond of the ANC Suburban Task Team thanked the Minister for visiting Ekurhuleni and informed the community that it only takes 10 days to process an ID with the new application and delivery system. “We can give support to ensure all registered voters have valid ID documents on 7 May 2014” Diamond concluded.

LEADER OF TOMORROW:Thabang Motloung. Thabang Motloung was anonymously nominated and invited to participate in the Tomorrow Leaders Convention. The aim of the convention is to acknowledge future corporate and industry leaders in Africa bringing conventional and unconventional leaders from diverse backgrounds together with the attempt to strategically and favorably position Africa on the global economic scale. The Mondeor resident shared his experience and views with tame TIMES: Besides being motivated by the desire of being the first African to win or be nominated for the Nobel Prize in economics or financial innovation, I’m also motivated by fixing what I perceive as a crumbling financial system which was built on principals and forecasts that are no longer as applicable for the new world without exponentially raising already existing tensions and or unfavorable situations. I see future scholars and economic participant studying theories and models of this decade. The foundation of which our financial system was built has reached a point where if we don’t make a conscious decision to fix it, it will result in highly catastrophic events occurring should it naturally happen. The signs are already here- we live in a credit driven world which artificially drives economic growth in terms of GDP, renting homes has become the new own, the middle class is being whipped out (or falling living standards) by a “daylight robbery tax systems” amongst other things and it’s also reflected in the book of Genesis.“And when the money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, Give us bread: for why should we die in thy presence? For the money faileth.”Genesis 47:15 The above is a basic illustration of money losing value which is behind why so many people earn more, but in real terms, has actually fallen back. I think that my understanding of mathematical modeling gives me a view on life that many are not even aware of. I see what I’m doing as an opportunity to strategically position South Africa’s future in terms of obtaining decision making independence, which ultimately defines the well-being of citizens. While others are motivated by passion( which is how it’s meant to be), I’d like to think that I’m driven by destiny simply because I was an average academic performer in school, and I have no idea where my present day intellectual numerical capabilities come from. So I’d like to believe that they’re from God and not being caught up in too many things of no real value.

No vandalism could ever be beautiful Jeff writes:

No vandalism could ever be beautiful. Graffiti is a curse which should be stamped out with vigour. It makes public places look run-down and costs billions to erase worldwide. Graffiti ‘artists’ are inconsiderate cretins and miscreants who are so brainless that society would be better off without them. A case in point is the underpass near The Glen. Have you seen this mess? Beautiful it is not.

Shopping Centre parking charges Norma Rudham writes: I noticed with interest the letters on parking charges. This seems to be a bone of contention these days as some of the Centres do charge very high rates. Southgate only charges for underground parking and cars can be parked in the open parking areas without a charge. The small shopping centre next to the Panorama Flea Market does not charge at all and neither does the one in Glenvista. It is also worthy of note that the last time I was in the north (which as everyone knows has the reputation for being more affluent than the south) the Balfour Park Shopping Centre did not charge at all. The Glen Shopping Centre has no option to park in open parking without being charged and when this issue arose some time ago one of the reasons given by The Glen management was to prevent cars being stolen (however, someone then wrote in to say that several cars had been stolen since the installation of the booms). It seems a pity that shop owners in The Glen should be missing out on business because of the high parking charges and, in addition, it seems that some people prefer to support the security guards as that is their only source of income. However, the people implementing these charges always have an answer.

One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors - Plato. Over the past five years the ANC has been engaged in several campaigns to clean up the public image of its president. In all it’s efforts I believe that the ruling party has consciously or unconsciously compromised its own identity and ultimately lost it. It is very difficult to, without referencing or making mention of previous victories, state the ruling party’s core stance and this leads me to the following questions - Has the ANC lost its identity in the process of saving Zuma’s and do we still have an ANC? Opposition campaigns have latched on to this failure to weigh up issues and prioritize. Many have gone to the point of stating that Jacob Zuma has become larger than the ANC. Leading up to the elections on Wednesday I can certainly say the ANC will emerge victorious and that is all well, but I question if we can afford another five years where we are constantly unsure about the direction our ship is sailing in? There are many questions to consider, and all can only be answered by the ANC... Supposing it still exists under all the clout. Can the country afford another five years of an identity-less ruling party? The conduct of public affairs for personal gains seems to be the one thing which is the obvious current identity of the former liberation movement. I have heard many arguments about this, but I maintain that we cannot be content with victories of the past whilst we all agree this nation is yet to reach its full potential. One positive that the ANC has managed to pull off is the ability to control the political environment in the country, this is the same control which will see them emerge victorious after the 7 May polls. There are three critical areas which will see ANC retain power as far as I’m concerned. One; many people believe that voting will change nothing and thus abstain from voting. Two; fears have over the years been cemented in the minds of the voting constituency, and these fears still result in defensive voting patterns as opposed to (progressive) votes informed by policy and the political party’s will to serve the indignant. Three; the opposition has also fallen into the trend of Identitylessness - opposition parties are very vocal about what the ANC is doing and forget to tell us what they are about, and by so doing miss out on a major opportunity to present what they offer. As mentioned in many previous discussions, I don’t write because I have answers, but I write to find out from you what possible solutions could be forged. One problematic solution which was presented to the voter some few weeks back was that voters should consider foregoing the elections. I personally don’t understand how protesting by refusing to vote will positively affect the state of things, in my mind all this would achieve would be to give more power to the undesired. The way I understand democracy is that the people are periodically given the opportunity to choose their leaders through a vote. Votes are tallied and the party with the most votes leads until the next voting period, so in essence abstaining from voting in protest is like shooting yourself in the foot because you will end up governed by someone you had no say in choosing. A better option would be to give the vote to another party, in that way the protest better reaches the objective by diluting the power of the party you are not content with. Another key to Wednesday’s election is the youth vote, while many members of the pre 1994 generations may still vote on the bases of the defensive vote or a vote influenced by sentiment, the post 1994 voters introduce a fresh variant to this election. The born-free vote has been a subject of many discussions, and rightfully so because this segment of the population will give us insight into the future voting trends in the country. It is interesting how history repeats itself, there are one very significant similarities between the 1994 generation and the youth of 1967; both were presented with circumstances which placed them right on the threshold of change. We know what action the 76 generation took, now we wait to see whether the 94 generation has what it takes to stand. Wednesday may seem like an end, but in reality it is a beginning and I’m interested more in the attitude of the constituency after the election. For me an ideal situation would be one where the people of South Africa remain sensitive to the political environment, I don’t believe that regressing into politically carefree state of existence will be to the benefit of the country, we need to constantly demand responsibility and accountability from those we delegate the task of leadership to. Voters need to realize that the power is theirs and that our leaders are only stewards responsible for executing the will of the people. Let’s chat, share your opinion on any of the raised ideas, also let us know of your voting experience. Email voice@tametimes. co.za or tweet @nietovoice.

KlipSA’s Sustainable Urban Living Team’s next talk will be on one of the most versatile and environmentally positive materials in world. This plant is one of the fastest and easiest to grow while at the same time not being a heavy water consumer. It produces very long and strong fibers which can be used to produce a wide range of the most sustainable building and materials as well as clothing and a plethora of other products. Its rapid growth rate to strength ratio means that it is one of the most effective plants at carbon sequestration and it’s seeds and leaves have also been found to offer a wide range of impressive health benefits. Furthermore, if this plant were to be commercially grown in SA it could significantly boost local business opportunities, especially rural employment. Residents warns community: What to do after attempted drugging a hijacking

A Kibler Park resident would like to warn the community of what she believes was an attempted drugging. The 48-year-old woman was leaving a shopping centre in Mulbarton on 25 April at around 18:15 when an African male waved at her and told her to open her window which she did. He started telling her about his marketing company and asked if she had ever heard about it. When she said no, he said he would give her a business card. He went to his car, which the woman can only recall as white. He handed her a business card that that was laminated. Due to it being dark the woman could not see the name. While driving home she had the gut instinct

to throw the card away. This instinct became stronger when she saw a white car behind her flashing lights at her. She opened her window and threw the card away. The woman said she started feeling dizzy and got very hot so she stopped at the nearest building and told the security guard what had happened. The white car disappeared. She then phoned a friend. The woman believes the card was laced with drugs and that the white car that was flashing lights at her was the same man who gave her the card. The woman went with Michelle Pelser from the CPF to Mondeor SAPS to report the incident on the Sunday.

National Orders for stalwarts

Ruth First was one of the stalwarts who were bestowed with the Order of Luthuli for their contribution to democracy, peace and human rights. On the 20 anniversary of a democratic South Africa, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation congratulated the 54 individuals who have received National Orders from the Presidency. The fact that today, South Africa can celebrate the successes of people for their contribution to society, and not on the basis of race, should in itself be celebrated. The Foundation particularly recognised the accolades bestowed

on struggle veterans for their contribution to a democratic, nonracist and non-sexist state. Former Robben Island prisoner, Ahmed Kathrada, who serves on the Advisory Council on National Orders, was especially happy that the list of recipients in the political component cut across a wide spectrum of people, with diversity in ideology, gender and race. Kathrada, who has always been of the opinion that the unsung heroines

and heroes of the struggle should be recognised, believes that today’s event has contributed towards that. “It is our hope that the sacrifices of these individuals is not only recognised through the National Orders, but that their life stories can be captured in more detail, and retold to young people,” Kathrada said. “We hope that youth from across the country, take the stalwarts who were honoured today as role models. If it were not for these and other individuals, South Africa may not have been marking its 20th anniversary of freedom,” he added. Some of the recipients included: Order of Mendi: Shirish Nanabhai, Reggie Vandeyar and Indres Naidoo Order of Luthuli: Abdulhay Jassat, Ruth First, Wolfie Kodesh, Popo Molefe and Zephania Mothopeng Order of Mapungubwe: Ismail Mohamed Order of the Companions of OR Tambo: Alfre Woodard and Gwendolen Carter.

Please remember that you must be a registered voter in South Africa in order to vote. To confirm that your name is on the voters’ roll and to find out which voting station you’re registered at, please check your voter registration status online or SMS your ID number to 32810. You need to vote at the voting station where you’re registered to vote. However, if you’re outside your voting district on Election Day you may vote at another voting station in South Africa. If you’re outside the province where you’re registered, you’ll only be able to vote in the national election and not the provincial election, and you’ll be asked to complete a form (VEC 4) at the voting station.

Shembe calls on churches co-operation Inkosi Phakama Shembe calls on Gauteng Shembe members to vote ACDP. On 26 April, at Fundisizwe Hall in Johannesburg, Bishop Phakama Shembe of the Nazareth Baptist Church in Gauteng announced that Shembe Church members wanted a permanent cooperation with the ACDP. He called on all members to vote for the ACDP on 7 May, so that they could – with ACDP MPs as trustworthy representatives of their needs – have a say in Parliament. “Together with the ACDP”, he said.”Christian voters need a political party they can trust to act in their best interests. They do not deserve to be misled by politicians who “arrive only when it is voting time and then change the rules of the Most High.” The Bishop also called on Nazareth Baptist Church members in other provinces, as well as the Zionists, the Apostolics and followers of Tata Modise to vote ACDP on 7 May.

Bishop Phakama Shembe told his congregation that the Church wanted to deal with pressing social problems such as unemployment and poverty.

Should ex-pats be allowed to vote? There was a lot of activity on social media last Wednesday with South Africans who live in South Africa viewing their opinions on whether ex-pats should be allowed to vote in the elections. Some SA Citizens feel if they have run away they shouldn’t be allowed to vote but if they are on holiday they should. Another said they most ex-pats who are negative about South African wouldn’t care to vote and most probably didn’t. Ex- pats also had their say saying they have family in SA and vote in hopes to make it a better country for their family to stay in while others vote in hopes to come back to South Africa. Other interesting point that was brought up was if convicts should be allowed to vote. Share your thoughts with laurelle@tametime.co.za

Voting is a birth right tame TIMES spoke to ex-pats living abroad and asked them about their voting experience and why they think they should be able to vote. Andrew Preston has been in the United Kingdom for almost 12 years. Voting experience My wife and I arrived shortly after 7:00. There was a tube strike on so we walked part of the way. A number of our friends chose to cycle in. We joined the queue in Trafalgar Square. The majority of people seemed happy to wait to be able to vote. The officials were friendly and were in good spirits. I did find it a bit odd that so many checks were done before I could actually vote. I found it a lot easier voting in the UK and EU elections. The whole process took about 2 and half hours. I had reports of friends taking up to 3 and half hours. Overall I was very happy to have the opportunity to vote and have my say in how SA is governed - I feel a part of process. Why do you think as an ex-pat you should be able to vote? I consider voting a birth right that all South African citizens should have. Any talk of limiting voting rights to those that only live in SA is rather short sighted. There are numerous examples of people that still contribute to SA even though they don’t live there. I worked for a start-up company in SA while I was based in London. The company now employs over 100 people. Should I not have some say? On a related note around voting abroad, I read some reports that in the UK over 250K people were eligible to vote but only around 10K registered to do so online. This is rather disappointing. Why can’t there be postal votes or electronic voting to encourage

The queue Andrew Preston stood in at Trafalgar Square to cast his vote. higher rates of voting participation. Would you come back to South Africa? My wife and I are considering coming back to SA for family reasons this year. The level of crime and opportunities for work still concern us. We hope that the new government does more to stop crime and crack down on corruption.

Ex-pats make their mark

Proud to cast my vote Ashleigh Jackman has been living in London for 11 years I set off early to vote and make my mark at 7:00. The doors had just opened and I was surprised to see a cue of hundreds of eager South Africans already there. In typical SA style we took the 2 and half hours in the queue to catch up with friends and make new ones. Once inside the South Africa house the process was pretty slick and quick. The officials being mostly friendly and helpful. South Africa will always be home. I visit family a couple of times a year and often spend most of my holidays in South Africa. I was so proud to cast my vote and play my part in South Africa’s future.

PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN: The colours of the SA flag being worn proudly.

The first votes in the 2014 national elections were cast on 30 April as voters abroad voted at South African missions around the world. Some 406 South Africans who successfully registered to vote at the South African High Commission in Auckland, New Zealand were the first to vote when polling opens at 7:00 on 30 April which is 21:00 in South African time. They were followed by more than 26 000 voters who applied successfully to cast their ballots at 116 missions around the world over the next 33 hours. The final votes were cast in Los Angeles where polls closed at 6:00 South African time on 1 May. All voting stations in 123 cities were reported ready for voting in the national elections having received all materials and training. Once completed, the ballots from each voting station were collected in secure, sealed bags and transported to Pretoria where they will be counted for inclusion in the national results. The city with the largest number of voters is London where 9 863 voters applied to cast their votes. The city

with the smallest number is Bissau, Guinea Bissau where just a single voter applied. Responding to concerns that South Africans abroad had not been adequately informed of the process to apply for overseas votes, Chief Electoral Officer Mosotho Moepya said the Electoral Commission had worked closely with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) in promoting overseas voting among eligible voters.“Electoral prescripts provide that all registered voters who are registered in voting districts in the Republic as well as those registered against the international segment of the voters’ roll must notify the Chief Electoral Officer of their intention to vote at the mission at which they intend voting within 15 days of the proclamation of the election. This period ended on the 12 March 2014,” Mr Moepya explained. The Electoral Commission had in conjunction with DIRCO run a dedicated communication campaign aimed at registered citizens who are ordinarily resident outside of the Republic.

The top 10 largest overseas voting stations are: • London • Dubai • Canberra • Kinshasa • The Hague • New York • Doha • Dublin • Khartoum

First ever play Experience tea the royal way conference

Terre des hommes, in partnership with Cotlands and members of A Chance to Play Southern Africa coalition (ACTP-SA) will host the first ever play conference for Southern Africa. The conference which takes place between 12 – 15 May will be held at the Randburg Towers. As part of Cotlands’ role to advocate for children’s right to play, they are delighted to be organising the conference which would result in an advocacy plan for play in Southern Africa. The overall objective of the conference is to increase understanding and evidence of the importance of play and agree on strategies to promote safe and stimulating

play as an essential right towards the holistic development of children, as stated in Article 31 of the UNCRC. At the conference evidence and benefits of play will be better documented and shared among experts, implementers and decision makers. Government officials from Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa will engage in a panel discussion to assess and discuss challenges and solutions to protecting children through play initiatives in their respective countries. Other noteworthy speakers include Dr Lorayne Excell, head of Foundation Studies Division and coordinator of Early Childhood Development at the Wits School of Education, Linda Smith from the Lego Foundation and UNICEF Education Specialist – Early Childhood Development, Andries Viviers. While the link between education and employment has been well documented many may not realise that the foundation for life-long learning is formed before the age of six and is done so through play. At the four day conference Cotlands will examine the role of play against the socioeconomic background of Southern Africa. They will also explore the consequences of not providing children with adequate play opportunities and what impact this will have on the cycle of poverty.

It has become a trend to have high tea at exclusive hotels and now Thaba Ya Batswana Eco Hotel offers their own high tea at their Olive Tree Coffee Shop. Media and a group of fabulous ladies were invited for the official launch of the decadent affair last week. The Olive Room has a wide variety of loose leaf teas and with names like Burning Love, Crispy Dream and Falling in Love Again, to name but a few, one already desires to have a taste. The assortment of sweet and savoury snacks is a dream for any lady however ladies need to come with a guilt-free conscious. Maruis Botes of Thaba Ya Batswana saw the need for high tea in the community of the south as many ladies would come for tea in the afternoon so he decided to make the experience that more royal. Where does high tea come from one may ask? It is documented that Anna, the Duchess of Bedford (1788-1861) is credited as the creator of teatime. Because the noon meal had become skimpier, the Duchess suffered from “a sinking feeling” at about four o’clock in the afternoon.

At first the Duchess had her servants sneak her a pot of tea and a few breadstuffs. Adopting the European tea service format, she invited friends to join her for an additional afternoon meal at five o’clock in her rooms at Belvoir Castle. The menu centred around small cakes, bread and butter sandwiches, assorted sweets, and, of course, tea. This summer practice proved so popular, the Duchess continued it when she returned to London, sending cards to her friends asking them to join her for “tea and a walking the fields.” The practice of inviting friends to come for tea in the afternoon was quickly picked up by other social hostesses. During the second half of the Victorian Period, known as the Industrial Revolution, working families would return home tired and exhausted. The table would be set with any manner of meats, bread, butter, pickles, cheese and of course tea. None of the dainty finger sandwiches, scones and pastries of afternoon tea would have been on the menu. Because it was eaten at a high, dining table rather than the low tea tables, it was termed “high” tea. If you would like to have high tea like Anna, the Duchess of Bedford please book in advance at The Olive Tree Coffee Shop. Contact 011 959 0777.

Wherewordsfailmusicspeaks The Alter Fan Cam is a new brand that Darryl Putter and ZukhumNan Emmanuel launched that brings life to live music events. The duo aims like to show people what the music has with visuals. Alter Fan Cam visits music events by choice or by request and video record at songs song, take pictures and enjoy the show as any fan would. The equipment used is minimal, one good camera and lens. They record the songs in one take, moving between the crowd and stage. “We get up close and personal, the camera is hand-held which only adds to the authenticity. The idea is to give the fans perspective on a gig, for two reasons, the fan watching can relive the moments and the band can show its fans the experience they’re in for. We even dance with the camera or get knocked around by the moshers. We try to re-frame the shot as quickly as the eye see’s new or interesting things. The result is a rather

Spider-Man amazes at Truly one of the most anticipated movies of 2014. We were last introduced to Spider-Man in 2012 with the reboot The Amazing Spider Man. We now have The Amazing Spider-Man 2: The Rise of Electro. Starring Andrew Garfield who plays nerdy, sarcastic Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy the original love interest of Spider-Man. The story continues with Peter Parker as he juggles his personal life along with his super hero life. We are introduced to a number of new characters such as Electro played by Jamie Foxx, as well as Paul Giamati as Rhino. We saw Harry Osbourne played by James Franco in Sam Raimi’s SpiderMan; we now have Dane De Haan previously seen in Chronicle. With a number of great actors and special

effects that is a feast for the eyes The Amazing Spider-Man 2: The Rise of Electro delivers much more than its predecessor. Also if you read the comics you will be ok, but for those who haven’t, surprise at the end. Oh and if you are a Marvel Fan, be sure to stay tuned through to the credits. Make sure you see this one at your nearest SterKinekor.

Slabbert hungry to defend title

England’s Andy Gardiner and Canadian Josh Williams, two of the biggest stars in international disabled golf, have confirmed their places in May’s(12-15) Nedbank SA Disabled Golf Open at the Zebula Golf Estate & Spa. In 2012, Gardiner became Britain’s first amputee golfer to turn professional when, having reached a scratch handicap; he teed it up on the Jamega Pro Golf Tour. He’s currently top of the European Disabled Golf Association’s (EDGA) ranking, and has finished top of the Order of Merit there for the past three years. Williams heads to South Africa as a threetime Canadian champion and five-time US Amputee Golf Association champion. “I’m thrilled to be making my first trip to South Africa,” Gardiner said of the tournament. “I’ve competed against a couple of South Africa’s disabled golfers already and I was more than impressed by the professionalism and even more so by the fantastic standard of golf being played.” “To be able to compete in the Nedbank SA Disabled Golf Open is a challenge I’m especially looking forward to, and judging by the standard of confirmed entries already it’s going to take three days of near flawless golf to lift the title.” Gardiner and Williams will pose a real challenge to reigning Nedbank SA Disabled Golf Open champion Daniel Slabbert, who is hunting a fourth title but a third consecutive one after being the runaway winner for the past two years. “Daniel stands out as the biggest danger man. He could certainly dominate world disabled golf within the next few years,” said Gardiner. Slabbert will also be looking forward to measuring himself against a man who has realised his own dreams of also one day competing alongside professionals on the

OFF THE PITCH

Leaders all round Hello to all of you passionate cricket lovers out there. I trust that you have all enjoyed the last few weeks of the IPL which is filling the void of International cricket at the moment. It would seem that we are oblivious and nothing else is of any importance in the cricketing world at this time, so we say. The cricket fraternity is currently experiencing an equivalent of the British Premiere Soccer League, -alla-, the “Window Period” where we appoint coaches, captains, sell and loan players; and put structures in place

that will benefit particular National, Provincial or Franchise teams.I want to bring to your attention, that we at this time, do not know who will be the new Proteas Test Captain going forward. As far as I am concerned, there is only one player that can and will take over from Graeme Smith, as the Test Captain; and that is AB De Villiers, who I am sure will do the role of the Proteas skipper admirably. DeVilliers has proven that he is arguably the best natural cricketing brain at the moment in South Africa; and one of the best all-round batsman

She said:

As a male, sport is one of those things I’m expected to understand and be obsessed with so naturally I have dedicated most of my adult life to thoroughly understanding those things. When the opportunity presented itself for me to experience EFC, which I must admit was a first experience, I took it. Perhaps the competition element (having to tell my experience Vs that of Laurelle) had something to my eagerness to take up the challenge. Arriving at EFC29 I realised that this was a far different sport to what I have become comfortable with. I’m a soccer lover, yet I do not own a pair of soccer boots, but walking into Carnival City I had to tell my colleague that perhaps watching the spectators would also be entertaining. Confessions are good; so here is mine, I expected a lot of violence and blood and a squeamish female colleague who would before the end of the first bout beg that we leave. However what I did receive was nothing to that tune. I have a lot of respect for the sportsmanship of these athletes as a result. Let’s be honest guys, sport and emotion is synonymous; if the game doesn’t evoke emotion, it’s not for me. So the fights began and there was none of that Fight Club violence, instead the fighters displayed discipline and a diligent adherence to technique. I mean if someone were to kick me in the face, there would be a lot of rage involved in my retaliation; so just forget that there would be a hand shake from me at the end of the round. Anger I realised was not welcomed in as it would inevitably cloud judgment and lead to a dirty loss - So on that I respect these athletes. I enjoyed the fighters who anchored their approach on boxing and its fundamentals and I will be watching EFC30, I now have a favourite fighter- Wade Groth, all I have to say about this guy is what talent and skill. I’m a newbie to the sport but I know talent – Groth is talent and the EFC girls are talent.

I am from the south yet EFC29 was my first ever viewing of this sport. I decided to go and see what all the hype is about. While there it brought back memories of when I was a child and my parents took me along to watch boxing matches -only there we could afford front row seats, where we would experience boxers’ sweat splat on our faces when they got punched. Pricing for the Hexagon side seats range from R2 900 to R4 900. Who pays that amount? I really expected there to be a much more rapturous atmosphere however the arena filled up closer to the main bout however in my mind I thought it was always a sold out event. I did find some of the matches boring especially when the two opponents are wrestling on the floor, in some of the most compromising positions, however I believe this is part of the skill. It is much more exciting when there is a hard hit and someone falls to the ground, which makes me question myself why I enjoy such violence. Nonetheless I found myself applauding and jumping ecstatically for some of the victories. However my stomach turned when I saw one fighter had been taking out on a stretcher. It must be so hard for the EFC fighter’s partners to watch, knowing there is great potential for their loved one to get badly hurt. Another thing that caught my attention is that nearly every EFC fighter is covered in tattoos- now I have tattoos myself but just want to know is it criteria or uniqueness- it is not that unique if every ‘Pit-bull’ has one. The second thing is song choice- when the fighters come out, now many had awesome songs that got the crowd going and I am sure got them psyched up but Katy Perry- Roar- seriously?? Ndu, Dineo(his girlfriend) and I all felt it was a bit soft. I think song choice is imperative as it sets the tone of what type of fighter you are. All in all; I enjoyed EFC and will go watch it again.

in the world in all formats of the game who leads from example and would be the obvious choice to lead the Proteas for at least the next ten years. He has consistently shown with both the bat and the gloves that he would be the man to take the Proteas forward. We are very fortunate in that AB’s former AFFIES School Boy team mate, in Faf Du Plessis, could and should be appointed as the Vice Captain for the Proteas. Faf has certainly grown in popularity with the South African public, in recent times in terms of his consistency in all formats of the game. Both of these players, I am sure will certainly bring a new brand of cricket going forward. Across the other Test playing Nations, ex Sri Lankan opening batsman, Marvan Aatapattu has been appointed as the Sri Lankan coach,

due to Paul Farbrace opting to join Peter Moores as the England assistant coach. Moores is now in the seat for a second stint and I wonder if he would consider Kevin Pietersen as a trump card in his future plans. Moores and Pietersen fell out with each other a couple of years ago, but this could be the pair that takes English cricket back to the top of the pile. I must take this opportunity and wish Lawrence Mahatlane all the very best on his appointment as the National u/19 Coach. Good luck to all the public as you cast your special vote tomorrow, ensuring that this great country lives on for ever. God Bless South Africa.

New EFC Welterweight champ Laurelle Williams

laurelle@tametimes.co.za Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) 29 smashed Carnival City last Thursday with the eleven bouts on the fight card however it was the much anticipated clash between Welterweight Champion Dino Bagattin and contender Henry Fadipe that had the crowd roaring. The short lived fight ended when the 22-yearold Nigerian born Fadipe, who fights out of Ireland, knocked out Bagattin in the first round, winning both countries(Ireland and Nigeria) their first ever EFC AFRICA championship belt. Fadipe made his way to the title shot in less than a year. At only 21-years-old, he crossed the continent to face the might of Tumelo Maphuta. He delivered a split draw after knocking Maphuta down repeatedly. He went on to demolish Martin ‘The Punisher’ van Staden with punches and an ankle lock in the first round. After that he laid Michiel Opperman out cold with two elbows clubbed straight to the jaw. Bagattin got a taste of Fadipe’s punch when he was dropped by Fadipe’s straight right. Morne Prinsloo was taken out on a stretcher after Mark Hulme pounded him however Hulme was disqualified due to illegal strikes and Prinsloo was announced the winner. The Ricky Misholas vs Dewald Botes bout as well as the Wade Groth vs. Alexandra Cheboub bout proved to be entertaining.
