Laurelle Williams laurelle@tametimes.co.za Two petrol attendants, Alois Mazokera and Lerato Hlatsoane, from the Shell Garage Mulbarton came to the rescue of elderly gentlemen on 21 May when their vehicle, an old Ford Escort, set alight on True North Road. “Around one thirty, I saw the smoke and fire coming from the vehicle. The taxi drivers from the taxi rank were already

The one man was on crutches. They couldn’t do anything. The fire was coming from the engine, underneath the car and under the dashboard,” Mazokera

further explained. Hlatsoane said when he saw Mazokera run with a fire extinguisher he quickly grabbed more extinguishers and assisted. They used three extinguishers all in all to put out the fire and by the time City of Johannesburg EMS arrived the fire was extinguished. Robert Mulaudzi, City of Johannesburg EMS spokesperson said, “Turffontein Fire Department responded to the call. The victims were treated for smoke inhalation; one was taken to Netcare Mulbarton Hospital and the others to the nearest government hospital.” When the petrol attendants were asked if they were afraid to get close to the fire, they responded no and explained that every year they go on training to learn how to put out a fire. “This fire was similar to the petrol fire we saw on training.” It is speculated that the fire was caused by faulty wiring but is not confirmed. To add to the already heart warming story, a taxi driver bought the burnt vehicle from the elderly gentleman on the spot.

Being in the media industry I accept the fact that I as an editor, reporter, sharer of information, community provider or however you see me that it is a forever changing market. That there will always be room for me to up my game and improve the product. We, tame TIMES, are only as good as our last edition or I am only as good as my last article. I welcome that, as I know and love that there is no end to learning or bettering oneself or the product. Just as we put one deadline to sleep, the cycle starts again from the beginning just this time we aim for the paper to be better than the last. I also accept, being in this industry, tame TIMES and I open ourselves up for criticism – we are putting ourselves out there on a public platform where there is a big possibility that we could upset /anger/ offend or just not please someone in some way. This is where our responsibility comes in and this is why I welcome constructive criticismtelling me where my fault lies and suggesting how I could approach it better -not just showing me my faults to just embarrass me or belittle me. No, I haven’t recieved a letter from an angry reader trashing me yet. Most of the criticism actually happens within the business. What I need to ask you as the reader is: what changes do you want to see in tame TIMES. Why do you read the paper or why don’t you read it? What pages do you go to first and what pages do you ignore? What do you want to see in the paper and what would make it better? I value the community’s opinion more as at the end of the day, I write my articles for you. I serve JHB South residents and need to know what your needs and wants are. Please share your thoughts with me at laurelle@tametimes.co.za.

The Gauteng Department of Education’s Secondary School Improvement Programme (SSIP) has won the 2014 United Nations Public Service Award. The United Nation’s Public Service Awards are held annually to recognise creative achievements and contributions of public service institutions that lead to a more effective and responsive public administration in countries worldwide. Through an annual competition, the UN Public Service Awards promotes professionalism and visibility in the public service. The UN Public Service Award is made up of four different categories. Awards are given to a winner and runner-up in five regions, Africa being one of the regions, (along with Asia/Pacific, Europe/North America, Latin America/Caribbean and Western Asia). There are eight possible awards in each region. Only three awards were given in the African region in 2014. The SSIP was awarded first place in the African award for Category 1:“Improving the Delivery of Public Services”. Cameroon won second place for a project on water and sanitation. The winning project, SSIP, has been a major factor for the significant improvement in the matric pass rate in Gauteng since 2010. By providing supplementary tuition to 50 000 learners and support for teachers in 400 priority schools, the SSIP has helped achieve a 15% improvement in the provincial pass rate, with the most significant improvements happening in priority schools serving disadvantaged communities. The GDE was also recognised as the best performing department in strategic management in an evaluation conducted by the Presidency under the Department of Performance Monitoring and Evaluation (DPME). “This award belongs to all the teachers, principals, and GDE officials who have given selflessly towards the improvement the quality of teaching and learning in Gauteng schools. This also shows that systems, programmes and interventions put in place by the department are yielding results,” Gauteng MEC for Education, Barbara Creecy said.

Nursery school allegation A parent writes:
child that wants to keep running out the door, and to avoid that the other children also start crying as they also want to go home. I have never locked children in any class, room or my office.” “If I was that bad then why did the parents entrust their child in my care from four months until the child turned a year this May? The only reason they removed their child was that they have moved to another suburb, thus petrol would have been extremely expensive and according to the mother of the child, there are three nursery schools surrounding the complex that they now live in, thus it would only be the best solution was to have changed the baby to a nursery school, just around the corner.”
I have recently taken my child out of a nursery school due to the owner shouting and screaming at the toddlers. The real naughty kids get locked up in the office or the passage and are not allowed to mix with other kids. The owner is very rude and has no patience and should not be allowed to run a school. People should be wary of where they place their children. tame TIMES spoke to the owner of the nursery school. She said that these parents (she knew who they were) had recently moved to another suburb however did not give her one month’s notice therefore did not get their deposit back as they had breached the enrolment contract. “This is the way parents get back at nursery schools; they defame the school and owners’
name, as they are upset as they did not get their deposit money back.” She went on to explain, that she looked after children in her care as her own. “No child is locked up in my office, or anyway else in the nursery school. During home time most toddlers especially new toddlers get excited when the parents come and collect their own children, and when they realise it is not their parents they tend to want to run out the parent’s entrance door. To avoid this behaviour and control the children, I then take them into my office under my supervision to soothe and calm the toddler down.” “Yes in a case as above I do take the child that is screaming and go into my office and let the child play in my office and the passage way, so that we have better control over the
A heartfelt thanks Angels Baby Sanctuary writes:
Election posters need to be removed
We would like to send out a heartfelt thank-you to Tandi from Rampage Modelling and The Glen Shopping Centre for a wonderful event, Miss South Gauteng, held on 17 May. The beauty pageant was a great success and we would like to thank all the beautiful girls who so lovingly donated goods to our babies. We are truly grateful for all the donations made to the home and humbled by the generosity of the people in the South. Thank you
I would like to know if there is a time limit for elections posters to be removed. Only about 4 or 5 of the almost 30 parties bothered to put up posters around the Glenvista, Glenanda, and Mulbarton area but 10 days after the election they still all there. Gauteng IEC’s communication officer Boitumelo Monaki said, “The hanging and removing of posters are managed by municipal by-laws. The municipality in the areas where posters are hung are the ones who can indicated what their by-laws are.” tame TIMES is still waiting for confirmation of the period election posters have to be taken down.

Helpful SAPS officers Laurelle Williams writes: I would like to commend and thank Cst Domola and Cst Tshabalala from Moffatview SAPS Sector 1 for their friendly assistance on 18 May. I was looking for South Rand Recreation Centre but couldn’t find it. While searching on my GPS I saw the police sector van and waved them down. I asked them if they knew where it was, they said I must follow them as they knew of two community centres. The first one they took me to was the wrong one so they then took me to the second one. which was the right one. I really appreciate their effort in assisting me especially that they did it with a smile on their face.

Innovating the south At thirty years old, Bassonia resident Mark Sham has his hands in several different pies with nine businesses to his name. However his ultimate goal is to uplift the south, believing the south’s biggest asset is its people; and with several successful events under his belt such as Market@ Meyersdal, Deep in the Woods and Malakite he is certainly getting that right. Sham studied marketing for two years after schooling at Alberton Christian Academy however got restless and started working. He decided to start his own business, Vivid Engage, when he had to choose between two bosses.”I decided to pick neither,” Sham said. His other businesses are InteractiveDirect (direct marketing); Vivid Engage (digital marketing); True Vision (corporate training and events); Figure4 & Crossfit gym in Meyersdal Mall; Senhor Calistos (Malvern); Waterboys; Vintage (runs social events) and he is the brand owner of Market@ Meyersdal as well Malakite in Alberton North. “I am that crazy idea guy and I must say I have great partners who really assist me to get the idea off the ground,” Sham said. When asked what he attributes to his past events’ success, he explained that his marketing background is key. “The trick to it is to take something that is small and make it look big and it then becomes big.” He added that he creates brand ambassadors who energises other people about the event and believes social media is essential and effective. “Deep in the Woods was a success as we gave people space, there were easy accessible bars and toilets and security was a priority. The marketing was on point,” Sham said. He marketed it from the angle that not many events like this are held in the south, so people especially residents must celebrate it and THE SOUTH’S OWN MARKET: An art display at one of the markets. prove that events like this can work in the south. Many south residents will be happy to know the next Deep in the Woods will be on 4 October at the Meyers Farm. Sham said his father Tony and his uncle Mike are his biggest influences. “My uncle is my original business mentor who gave me a lot tough love early on.” On a personal level, Sham gives back to schools by talking on entrepreneurship. “I don’t think I have arrived in this manner however I do want to get the message out there that anything is possible. I like adding value to the process and believe competition drives innovation.” What is the next event Sham is putting together? The 2014 Soccer World Cup will be screened at Malakite. “This won’t only be about watching sports but there will be mini-markets, games and various activities where the whole family can enjoy. It will be like watching the DEEP IN THE WOODS: Many people flocked to enjoy the music. games in your living room,” Sham said.
Death Row Fest a success Sundowners was a boiling pot of Joburg’s hottest and most progressive bands showing off their music to their adoring fans on 17 May. Starting early in the afternoon, the bands took the stage to an eager crowd ready for a full day of music, fun and hanging out with their friends. Death Row Fest, which sounds a bit morbid, was anything but that. Opening up the main stage was Empyrean War followed by Forever Unbound. Both of these up and coming bands showed their passion on stage for playing music and are on the path to big things. There were also a lot of big fighters from the south having to travel out there.” Wendt enjoys passing the knowledge forward to his students and seeing them progress. “As fast as they can learn, we give it to them.” When asked what his proudest moment as a coach is, he said, “We have won two titles with Dino and Zulu but I am proud every time a student pulls off a move I taught him and when they walk out the cage with their head held high but most of all I am proud because they put their trust in me.” The respect for the head coach and each other as well as the brotherhood camaraderie is clearly seen in the gym.
