‘Today is your day’ were the words of the day when Christway Religious and Social Services in partnership with Cotlands supported Child Protection Week (26 May to 1 June) by holding a fun and informative day on 29 May at Rotunda Park in Turffontein. Various ECD (Early Childhood Development) centres learners were invited and joined the children from Christway. Their day was jammed-pack with educational talks from Booysens SAPS, SANCA, City of Johannesburg EMS, Childline, Johannesburg Water as well as social workers, Ruth Letsoala and Rachel Phaahla, emphasising that they have the right to be protected and just how worthy and important they are to society. The children were educated on what to do if they were approached by a stranger and taught Childline’s number 0800 055 555 as well as the police’s emergency number 10111. They were taught songs which will help them understand that no one should touch them in inappropriate places and were taught safety measures like not to walk in a park by themselves nor go to a public toilet by themselves. The smiling and innocent faces were also entertained by two clowns, Alwyn and Bobo as well as Christway’s children dancing. Take care of your health

This past week I was woman down as they say. At first I thought it was something I ate but after two days of immense pain and fatigueness, I mustered up the courage to go to the doctor and got told I have an ulcer. At first I didn’t believe it but as my mother explained it to me it made sense. Now this article is not a pity party for myself but rather an awareness of how grateful we need to be for our health. Since I was a child I have not been sickly and I have never actually spent a night in hospital- the closest I got was when my wisdom teeth got removed. I am grateful for

this even though I have always said I want to be in hospital so people can come visit me and bring me flowers but I suppose I will wait until I have a baby for that. I hate being sick- I feel so useless. I want to do so many things and know I have so many tasks to complete but yet my body just says no sorry you won’t be doing any of that today. When I am sick, I always think of the day before and I am amazed that one day I was feeling energetic and on top of the world yet the very next day or even in a space of an hour all my energy can be zapped out of my body and pain overcomes my body. I thank God for my health as I am still healthy- I just need to take a bit of extra care of myself. We who have our health need to stop complaining as there are people out there who are sick and would love to get out of bed to conquer the day but yet they can’t. We can. Every morning when you open your eyes and your healthy legs hit the floor- thank God.

City of Johannesburg: Joshua House: A home of love and care Budget The City of Johannesburg’s combined operational and capital budget has increased to a record R47.1billion after exceeding R40billion last year, finance MMC Geoffrey Makhubo said on 27 May when he delivered City of Johannesburg’s budget speech. “The massive increase in this budget bears testimony to the determination of the City to confront the social deficits in various areas and for new infrastructural development around the Corridors of Freedom,” he said. It was said that Johannesburg is financially in its best shape yet. “The City has a healthy cash balance, annual surpluses, and investments in strategic infrastructure and the reports from the auditor general,” he said. Makhubo explained the substantial cash reserves were built up through more stringent cash management. “Despite monthly expenditure of R2.2-billion, the City has a monthly cash balance in excess of R5billion.” The City’s capital expenditure over the next three years would equal R32-billion, with R10.4-billion budgeted for the 2014-2015 financial year. It was also on track to invest R100-billion in infrastructure over a 10-year period, with the infrastructure capital budget having grown from an initial R4.5-billion in the

2012-2013 financial year to R10-billion this coming financial year. Regarding rates and tariffs, electricity would increase by an average of 7.05%, which would provide the City with revenue of R13.6-billion. “Registered indigents will continue to receive free electricity, free water and free sanitation in terms of Johannesburg’s extended social package,” Makhubo said. “The tariffs for waste removal services will increase by 6% for domestic households and 8% for businesses and commercial customers.” The proposed increases would generate sufficient revenue to ensure waste management entity Pikitup could sustain its service levels and extend services to new areas and housing developments. Properties valued at less than R200 000 and households registered for the extended social package would continue to receive free refuse removal services. The property rates tariff would increase by 5%, while water and sewerage tariff increases would be around 8.9%. * Electricity increases by 7.05% * Refuse removal increases by 6% for domestic households and 8% for businesses * Property tariffs increases by 5%

LOVING HOME: Lisa Viljoen, Bev Mackay and Belinda Karam with Joshua House babies. Joshua House, situated in Mondeor, is a baby home that serves as a temporary place of safe care for babies who have not had the best start in life, they have either been orphaned or abandoned. At the moment Joshua House cares for two babies and have just said a heartfelt farewell to a baby that was recently adopted. It is all thanks to three women of God; Penny Du Preez, Carol Smith and Melinda Karam, that Joshua House stands and gives God’s children a second chance at life. Jesus Christ has placed it on their hearts to assist in the orphan crisis in South Africa. Joshua House admits babies from 0-2 years old, which are legally placed in their care by a registered Child Protection

Organisation. The babies stay with them on a short-term basis (6-12 months), pending the legal and medical assessment process to find the best placement option for the child. This permanency plan could either be re-unification with their families, adoption or foster care. They work with Abba specialist adoption and social services. During their short-term stay, Joshua House offers them love, emotional support, medical/ nutritional care and stability for traumatised children. Their aim is to have a powerful and positive impact on their lives. The house mother is Bev Mackay and Lisa Viljoen is her assistant. They can house six babies but aim to purchase additional properties for more baby homes in areas where there is a need.

ANC after-party mess Clr Tyrell Meyers writes:

Tip: Van uitstel kom afstel. As jy weet dat daar belangrike planne is waarby jy en jou metgesel nog moet uitkom, kry dit so gou moontlik gedoen. Die eerste tree is altyd die moeilikste, maar daarna is die bal darem aan die rol gesit.

Residents surrounding Rotanda Park in Turffontein are angry and perturbed by the state of the park after the ANC election party on 3 May left the park trashed and in a mess. Beer bottles and ANC pamphlets littered the park, leaving it unsightly. There was also a braai in the park, as some grass patches have been destroyed and burnt. The smell of urine was very strong the next day due to people making use of the park as a toilet by what is still left of the skate board ramp. The sad reality is that the park is completely neglected so much so, that the fencing on the tennis courts is no longer useable. Lights often don’t work at night, and there is no green

gym equipment for kids. One would think with an ANC controlled ward, and an ANC controlled city, the park would be maintained to high standards in order to discourage the youth from substance abuse like booze and drugs. The ANC’s behaviour over the weekend before the elections encourages public drinking and the mistreatment of public property. Is this how they celebrate child protection and encourage child friendly recreation? How can the public use a park that is turned into a tavern? How do the children and families make use of recreation in Rotanda Park? Where will the children turn to in the end? Leaders should be setting an example.

LEFT BEHIND: The state Rotunda Park was left in after the ANC victory party.

Government accountable for children’s right to play Cotlands, together with A Chance to Play Southern Africa(ACTPSA) announced their advocacy statement on World Play Day(28 May)to hold government accountable to upholding Article 31 on United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child(UNCRC) and Article 12 of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child(ACRWC). World Play Day was also celebrated by various ECD’s (Early Childhood Development) visiting Cotlands and playing various games. All Cotlands staff played dress-up with the children and celebrity Sashi Naidoo visited the NGO and got her face painted by the children. Regina Mandikoza, ACTPSA regional coordinator said that the problem is that civil society and government do not value, understand, promote and legislate for play as a right and an essential development and recreation activity as per the UNCRC’s Article 31 and Article 12 of the ACRWC. According to the coalition, play and recreation are essential to the development, learning, health and well-being of children. Cotlands together with other members of ACTPSA coalition hope by 2017 to have:

• Play and recreation integrated into early childhood development programmes as well as learning and health programmes. • Designated, quality, free, safe and wellmaintained play areas and recreational facilities in every community that is suitable for all children, including children with disabilities. • National, provincial and local government meet their international and regional obligation on the right to play in upholding the provisions in Article 31 of the UNCRC and the article 12 of the ACRWC. “If we are serious about ending the cycle of poverty and creating a world where children are able to access all the opportunities available to them, we need to start seeing play as an essential part of their development, “Jackie Schoeman, Cotlands CEO said. According to ACTPSA, children living in urban areas are most at risk.”Parks and jungle gym areas that were created for children have been overtaken by predators. Children no longer feel safe to engage with each other or explore open spaces which hinder holistic development,” Mandikoza said.

HAPPY WORLD PLAY DAY: Cotlands staff also enjoyed the festivities.

Ittakes avillageto raise a child; it takes a village to protect a child.

By Nieto Hernan It takes a village to raise a child; it takes a village to protect a child. Growing up, I was taught that every female of my mother’s generation or earlier was to be respected as my mother and that every man was similarly meant to be respected as my father. This in my opinion served very well in making sure that myself and many growing up during that time were kept in line; disciplining a child was the responsibility of every adult and hence the saying – it takes a village to raise a child. Over the past week I was forced to remember those days, not for the discipline, but for the protection children also received from those adults. I have to say this, I do not believe in making mistakes in order to learn, yes we can learn, but one will never live long enough to make all the mistakes by themselves, sometimes you will need to learn from other people’s mistakes. I remembered those days for the protection children were afforded even from repeating mistakes. The 200 girls kidnapped by the Islamic extremists in Nigeria come to mind and I question - if the saying were true today, were those girls in fact kidnapped by people who should have been protecting them? Adults often complain that today’s youth are lost and short of direction, but let’s look at it from another angle for a second – who raises these kids? Parents and adults have delegated the parenting of children to video games, so called social media platforms and a number of other platforms which cannot raise kids. And then we are surprised at the result. Parents and adults are continually failing kids and in so doing failing the security of a functional future planet. We have a serious problem if we think children abused for 16 years by their father, while living in a community full of adults, will grow up and build functional societies. If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to protect a child. As far as I’m concerned adults need to wake up and face the responsibilities they have towards children. Let’s chat. I would love to hear your views regarding the responsibilities of parents and adults to every child within our communities. Email voice@tametimes. co.za or tweet @NietoVoice.

Number of guided walks to be cut The fortnightly guided walks in the KNR have been an integral part of the function of the KNRA for the past 30 years. Unfortunately due to a fall-off in the number of people attending these walks the Excom has reluctantly decided to reduce the twice monthly event to once a month from 1 June. The walk will start at the entrance precinct in Kibler Park at 8:00 in summer and 9:00 in winter as has been the norm for the past three decades. There are many sad aspects to the Excoms’ decision: Apart from the walks being a tradition, they were always led by highly knowledgeable guides which probably means that a great deal of this valuable knowledge and expertise could be lost whereas it should have been used to expose people to the widely diversified aspects of the KNR. Another factor was that the bulk of the new members came from these walks and experience has shown that it is vital for the KNRA to keep membership numbers at a high level because therein lies our strength. According to Tony Ferguson who has managed the Guiding Portfolio for the past 14 years the decision to cut the number of walks in the reserve could be reversed if numbers started to increase. Tony can be reached on 082 454 6114 if you need any further information or if you have any suggestions which would be welcome.

Educating the Moffatview community

The Gauteng Department of Community Safety in partnership with Moffatview SAPS conducted a crime awareness road show in Moffatview and surrounding areas. The purpose of the road show is to create awareness and educate the community on issues of safety. The focus was on robbery aggravating with firearms, hijackings and substance abuse which are prevalent in the area. Officials from the department and members

of the SAPS interacted with community members on safety issues at the identified hotspots such South Hill, Regents Park, LaRochelle and Rosettenville and the N17. Booysens, Mondeor, Fairlands and Brixton SAPS assisted in the awareness campaign. Front: Molne Kunka, Sgt Mothibi and Elizabeth Mampame. Following the shocking video of a toddler gagged and tied up with masking tape at a crèche in Rosettenville, Champions Crèche requested Women & Men against Child Abuse (WMACA) to give a talk on child abuse. Other ECD (Early Childhood Development) centres in the area were invited to the Booysens crèche as well as Booysens SAPS VEC (Victim Empowerment Centre) members. Vincentia Ngobese, WMACA operations manager explained the safety measures ECD’s need to take and went on to say that every behaviour has a meaning. If a child is crying non- stop or being naughty there is a reason as to why they are acting like that. “If you isolate a child during teaching- it is considered a crime as they have a right to an education. Rather ask the child to check if the other children are doing their work or give them a task to do in the class,” Ngobese said. “You as the teacher need to be bigger and maturer in the situation.” It was stated that the owner of the Rosettenville crèche has been put on the Child Protection Register. This is a list of people who have been found unfit to work with children. It was explained to the teachers that no matter what culture or religion you are, hitting a child is considered a crime with corporal punishment being banned in 1996. “If you suspect a child is being abused, you may report it. If you know a child is being abused, you must report it. “Failure to report is a criminal offense with a woman recently receiving 15 years in jail due to this,” Ngobese said. Ngobese added that when you see a bruise, blood or sore on a child, one must not ask who did this you but rather ask what happened then take the child to the hospital and

tell the parents to meet you there. “Also, don’t act like a medical practitioner as this will only traumatise the child further. Don’t hire a person who has a history of sexual offense or domestic violence as a teacher,” Ngobese concluded. For more information on WMACA please visit www.wmaca.org.za. Safety measures ECD’s need to take: - They need to have a safety committee. - Legal documents- children’s diary, registers (sign in and out), break duty rosters need to be kept especially for communication with a parent. - Access control of who comes in and out of school. - Incident report book- in case a child gets hurt during break or at school. The principal needs to know about it and take responsibility. - Fully stocked First Aid kit and staff members who are trained in First Aid. - Medication consent form- if a parents wants the teacher to administer medicine it must be recorded in the diary as a consent form. The medicine must have the name on and be locked away. - Indemnity forms must be signed for trips and excursions. - If the school has a feeding schemethey must have a vendor contract that complies with health and safety measures. Must not accept donations of old food. - Their building must have an electricity compliant certificate as well as working fire extinguishers. - Teachers must monitor when children go to the bathroom.

Springshouseofhorrors: #Bringbackourgirls: Residents were up in arms last week when reports surfaced about the so-called “House of Horrors”. Beeld reported last week that five children, between 2- and 16-years-old, were allegedly held hostage by their 36-year-old father, who is a local businessman in Springs. The children were allegedly gruesomely tortured and abused. They have allegedly never left the house, or even gone to school. The neighbours only found out about the children for the first time on 26 May, when one of the 11-year-old boy who escaped the house begged them for help- Beeld “House of Horrors”. On 14 April this year, more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls were kidnapped from their school in the small northern town of Chibok, in the northeastern state of Borno. The girls were abducted by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram. A few of the girls have escaped, but the remaining girls are still being held captive. Rumours are circulating that the girls are being married off to militants. Defence chief Air Marshal Alex Badeh announced on Monday night that the military has located the girls, but offered no way forward. “We can’t go and kill our girls in the name of trying to get them back,” he said. President Goodluck Jonathan and Nigerian government officials have joined forces with other countries, such as the US, to help bring the girls home.

CIVILIANS: all over the world are actively involved in protests to urge the Nigerian government to find the girls.

Waterstone College bought by Curro Holdings Curro Holdings, the JSE listed independent schools group, announced on 28 May the acquisition of another top independent school, Waterstone College, as part of its expanding footprint country-wide for strong growth this year. The school will be part of Curro’s top quality branded Select Schools, following the acquisition of Woodhill College in Pretoria East in November 2011 and Grantleigh in KZN in December last year. Curro Holdings CEO, Dr Chris van der Merwe, said he is very positive about the school as it is located in a strong growth area. Waterstone College’s ethos is well aligned with that of Curro’s and is situated on a campus of 39 hectares, of which 12 hectares can be used for educational purposes. “Also of importance is that Waterstone is one of the leading sport schools in Johannesburg with top rankings in cricket, netball, tennis, and football. The school has a unique High Performance Programme which utilises its top class facilities towards the development of young sportsmen and women,” Van der Merwe said. Curro currently has 31 independent schools campuses under its banner, accommodating about 28 000 learners. This includes 950 students at the Embury Institute for Teacher Education (EITE) based in KZN. Van der Merwe said that the construction of ten new Curro schools is on track to be completed by end 2014. The focus is on opening these new schools in January 2015. How will it affect the school? • The Christian ethos of the school will not change. • There will be no impact on school fees, which will continue to increase in line with the rate of inflation in the sector. Water stone has always been able to keep their fee increases to under 10% and are confident this will continue to be the case. • Development Bonds and Levies will be phased out. • Class sizes will remain as currently the case: a planned maximum of 18 in Grade 00 and 0; 23 in Grades 1-2; 25 in Grade 3; and 26 from Grade 4-12 (some classes in the FET phases may, as is currently the case, be slightly larger for short periods as learners move subjects) • Staff will experience very little change. Being part of a broader group of schools will have many advantages, and all of their

But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. On the morning of 24 May, Miss Earth South Africa semi- finalists, 150 Generation Earth students, families and friends, Clr Sergio dos Santos and a few residents of the south used the bright and sunny winter morning to clean out the spruit along Bellefield Avenue in Mondeor. The clean up included removing alien invasive vegetation as well as removing excess grass and leaves. Mondeor Primary, Glenvista High and The Hill High Generation Earth councils represented the south by getting their hands dirty. In honour of National Environment Week which is celebrated from 1–7 June and World Environment Day (WED), on 5 June, the Miss Earth South Africa semi finalists across SA have embarked on community clean up initiatives. Semi finalists have been working in their communities over the past weeks focussing their efforts on community food gardens, and awareness around the important issue of food security. The organisation has had a focussed programme over the past five years looking at food insecurity as a critical issue facing not only SA, but Africa at large. Additionally it has created fun and exciting ways for learners in a classroom environment to understand and appreciate, the benefits of planting their own food, and also the changing climate that we live in and the challenges that they face. Louis The King bags three awards Turffontein Racecourse welcomed the cream of the Highveld racing fraternity on 28 May as it played host to the 2014 Racing Association Highveld Feature Season Awards. The event which is hosted by the Racing Association in conjunction with Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited is an important day in the calendar for those passionate about horseracing. Stakeholders from across the broad were awarded as owners, breeders, jockeys and work riders were all rewarded for their contribution to the sport of horseracing for the 2014 season. Again, it was Louis the King who stole the show having recently won all three legs of the coveted SASCOC Triple Crown. ‘LTK’ as he has affectionately been dubbed took home the title of Champion Horse of the Season as well as Champion Three Year Old Colt and Champion Colt. Uni cyclists at Thaba Trails Thaba Trails hosting the SA XCO Champs was pleased to see that the reputation of Thaba Trails did not stop these two unicycle riders from enjoying the beauty of this MTB Gem in the South. The preparation of the trails steadily moves forward as the 4,5km trail is tweaked and prepared for the Nationals in July. On the same trails, Thaba Trails Club will be hosting the Gauteng XCO Championships on 12 July. The preparation and building of mountain bike trails has to take into consideration the terrain. Rain storms can so quickly destroy well designed trails when the environment is ignored. Therefore making use of natural substances such as rocks, trees, small bushes and the elevation of the land is a vitally important consideration There will be XCO races catering for all age groups at the South African Championships as well as the Provincial Championships and the youngest age category will be the Nippers who are aged 9 and 10 years, while the Sprogs are aged 11 and 12 years old. All local riders in these ages can contact Wendell Bole at 082 900 0749 for special preparation for these future events. Coaching clinics will be held on Saturday mornings at Thaba Trails. If you are interested, ask your parents to make the call mountain biking is fun.

Cricket in limbo

We have certainly been entertained for five weeks with the Indian IPL Cricket, which has seen the unlikely KKR Franchise overcome, the Kings XI Punjab in the final on Sunday. Wow, what a spectacle it has been. West Indian off spinner, Narine chose to play for KKR in the IPL final ahead of his commitments for a West Indian training camp and has thus been excluded for selection to the West Indies team for the immediate future. I have often sat and wondered where the future of cricket is headed to. It is rather concerning that the ICC have decided that the big three in India, England and Australia would have total control in the decision making of the game. I totally disagree with this and believe that all the Test playing nations should have an equal input in the deciding of the game going forward. Surely, South Africa as a major cricketing nation must have a say, considering the fact that our Proteas have arguably dominated the rankings in recent times, as well as being the number one team for a couple of seasons. On top of this, we as a country have proved to the world that we can host major sporting events, especially the Soccer World Cup which is the num-

ber one event in the world, regarding crowd attendance at games as well as television viewership. However, were we promised or given massive lump sums of money from the ICC that would keep the game in this country moving forward as long as CSA gives the ICC their support? Perhaps we will never know the answer to this. I fully understand that India are by far the dominant cricketing nation and huge revenue is brought in through crowd attendance and lucrative television sponsorships, but one needs to be careful of giving these three nations too much dominance. On the playing front, all does not seem to be rosy for England at the moment. Over the past couple of weeks, the Director of the England and Wales Cricket Board, Paul Downton, has made mention through the media as to why Kevin Peitersen was axed from all English cricket teams. Pietersen in return has given his version of events, as well as made it known to Mr Downton that he has a superb record whilst representing England. One of the world’s most renowned cricketer’s in Geoff Boycott has certainly backed ‘KP’, as Pietersen is known to his fellow playing colleagues. It is such a shame

because it sounds like he is still very passionate about setting records for his adopted nation. The administrators in the English game have not accepted any responsibility for Pietersen in terms of managing the player and I believe they By Craig Norris have failed big time here. Cricket fans across the world will now be starved of watching a great Test player, although at times was quite controversial. You need to watch this space, as my feeling is England is on a downward spiral. Swann and Trott depart during the Ashes Series, Pietersen is axed; and another England great in Graham Gooch get’s shown the door. By the time you read this article, the appointment of the Proteas captain will have been announced. A couple of weeks ago I stated that AB De Villiers will be the new skipper, with Faf Du Plessis as his assistant. Let’s hope that the new skipper will get the support of the current crop of players for the Sri Lankan tour which is around the corner; and a visit to Zimbabwe for an ODI Series which includes one Test Match, before tackling the West Indies in the New Year. I look forward to the long days of the real thing; and that is Test Match cricket.

BRAVE: These two uni-cyclists weren’t scared to attempt the Thaba Trails.
