Nyaope officially declared illegal drug Lebo Mosolodi lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za Gone are those days when drug lords used to produce nyaope cocktail without fearing repercussions of the law. The recent amendment of the Drug Act declared that nyaope dealers could face possible 25-years behind bars and people found in possession of it could face 15-years or an optional fine. Tsohang Youth Project Director, Moses Gama said the recent amendment is a victory for all South Africans. He said this proves that if people are working collectively they can achieve good results. “Nyaope addicts ruin their families, some end up stealing and robbing because they want to get another fix. Talented youngster’s dreams are diminishing while others ended up behind bars from committing various crimes. Families’ breadwinners are being killed by addicts in their endeavour to get money to support their habits. Nyaope ruins individual families economically, physically, emotionally and socially,” said Gama. Katlehong police station Spokesperson Captain Mega Ndobe said most of the people under the influence of drugs are involved in criminal activities such as burglary, murder, theft of steel metals, robbery and
housebreaking. “They became involved in crime because of desperation of getting another fix. We are working around a clock trying to remove the drug dealers from our streets. It is also a parent’s responsibility to search for drugs in the children’s school bags. If they find drugs, they should immediately report to social workers and police,” said Ndobe. A Social Worker who wanted to remain anonymous added that nyaope addicts end up being disowned by their families and become homeless. “We had several cases of nyaope addicts who were beaten up by community members for stealing goods to get their next fix. Their lives are always at risk because they are often suspected for the crime committed in their neighbourhood.” The Department of Justice Spokesperson, Mthunzi Mhanga pronounced that Nyaope was not a drug but its narcotics ingredients-dagga and heroin – were listed as “undesirable dependence –producing substances” in schedule 2 of the Drug Act. He said though dagga and heroin were the main ingredients, anti- retroviral medication; rat poison and sugar were added to produce the desired effect. Nyaope is now declared illegal drug which is harmful.

Between 2000 -2003, I was working as a newsreader for the same radio station and I was later mandated to be a head of news. Then I was given a 3am-6am slot called Kuyavukwa (wakeup). As if that was not enough, I was shifted to 9pm – 12 pm hosting a popular show called “The late Night Affair”. I have also hosted the 9am- 12 midday show called Browsing Around”, said Mthembu. Currently, he is hosting “Kasi to Kasi show” starting from 12am -3midday. Listeners are passionate about his show because he tackles social problems and community development topics. His choice of music is appealing across all ages. “I have been chosen two times in succession as finalists of Ekurhuleni Community Awards. Last year I was for the first time chosen as the best radio personality in Ekurhuleni Community Awards which is a greatest honour in the City of Ekurhuleni. My role models are Cyril Bongani “Kansas City” Mchunu and Fana “Khabzela” Khaba,” said Mthembu. He is currently married with two kids living in Mavimbela Section at Katlehong. His dream is to move to greener pastures when the time is ripe but eager to learn from his predecessors in broadcasting industry.
