A string of complaints has been received by tame TIMES regarding the quality of service and the physical state of the Netcare Clinton Hospital, as well as the Netcare Union Hospital. Members of the Netcare Group of hospitals, the Clinton and the Union, both situated in Alberton, have come under fire from citizens living in the South of Johannesburg. Remaining anonymous on behalf of her 14-year-old daughter, one Meyersdal resident has come forward and spoken out regarding the bad service that she received while visiting the Clinton Hospital on two occasions. On 30 June 2014, the resident’s daughter was taken to the Clinton where, says her mother, she received a lack of quality service. “After complaining, the Nursing Services Manager, Stanley Mhlongo, came to my workplace and promised change regarding the hospital service,” said the resident. On the second visit, which took place in September 2014, her daughter received a private room but the resident commented that the service provided during the second visit should be given all the time and to all patients. “It’s high time medical aid realises that they are being short-changed by hospitals providing inadequate and pathetic service. Medical aid costs are raised and continue to climb each year and the community suffers,” added the resident. In another incident, a Mondeor resident who experienced an excruciating

pain in their neck and shoulder coupled with a numb sensation all the way down their left arm went to the emergency wing of the Union Hospital where they received no serious attention. Apart from waiting at the front help desk, which was abandoned for about 15 minutes, the resident was eventually approached and asked to wait. The resident said that the emergency area was crowded, filthy and smelled of food and urine. There was litter found on the floors in several different areas of the hospital, and the emergency room where patients’ vitals are checked was in a most appalling state. “The nurse on duty had no manners whatsoever,” said the Mondeor resident. “She didn’t even ask for my name when I walked through the door and I had to ask her if I could sit down,” they added. The resident noted that the nurse kept leaving the room to fetch documentation and other general medical paraphernalia and added that the nurse consistently complained about the previous nurse on duty who did not do their job properly by not having the correct documentation in the room on hand. Fed up, the resident requested to speak to the manager on duty. After waiting in vain, the manager met with the resident and appeared to show no concern about what had happened. The manager used the excuse that it was his first night on duty in the hospital. “The manager seemed unaffected and didn’t even take proper action on the matter,” said the Mondeor resident. “He

professional excellence.” According to the Mondeor resident, however, “This statement appears flawed as the service I received was careless.” tame TIMES Chief Executive Officer Karin Blignaut also provided comment regarding her experience at the Clinton Hospital. “Cleanliness is lacking. The toilets were smelly and people were standing right in front of the main entrance smoking, which is an illegal offence. Doctors on call during the evening send patients home due to being extremely busy. This is unacceptable,” says Blignaut.

simply told me that the hospital staff was busy and that I should go to the Clinton Hospital just up the road. I couldn’t believe the service I was getting!” they added. The Netcare Group of private hospitals states on its website that, “At Netcare our core value is care. We care about the dignity of patients and all members of the Netcare family. We care about the participation of our people and our partners in everything we do. We care about truth in all our actions. We are passionate about quality care and

“Sit vir oupa daar ‘n plaat op” Wat het ons geluister voor ons plate gehad het? O ja. Plate. “Langspeelplate”. Wie sou selfs net ‘n paar jaar terug kon dink jy daag by ‘n braai op en, soos jy instap, vra iemand: ag, terwyl jy nou by die platespeler verbyloop, sit sommer daardie nuwe plaat van Bobby van Jaarsveld op, asseblief? Hoe bisar.

Plate is nou weer in aanvraag. Of miskien Piet Botha of Pat Benatar.

Sasonah Lodge accommodates any person who requires frail- or full-time care. They are staffed by a nursing sister, full-time care workers and an on-site chef. Residents at the lodge are visited monthly by a hairdresser and a podiatrist. The lodge offers full-time residence, a daycare facility and holiday/ weekend care. The lodge is contracted to a medical response company to give them 24-hour

The past week was a blessed one at tame TIMES. We’ve had a wonderful month so far and are still going strong. Our CEO, Karin Blignaut’s grandson is finally home with his loved ones after spending some time in hospital. Our Month of March War against Drugs has reached more people than we ever imagined and we felt so good about this that we dedicated an entire page to the cause this week. We are trying something new again – a fictional piece by Billiam Walsh. We will run it over the course of a few weeks. Let us know what you think! We’re all on the edge of our seats today with the Cricket World Cup semi-final taking place. It has been an exciting week in sport, with some of our own Alberton residents completing the ABSA Cape Epic. We have some photos of rising sport stars on our inner-sport page, as well of as Werner Fourie and his Project Cat-Eye team which took part in the Cape Argus. I hope you enjoy this week’s edition of the paper!

medical response backup. Germiston Patrols is also assisting in 24-hour armed response. Sasonah Lodge has managed to erect three cottages, but unfortunately only one has been completed. In due time, when funds become available, they will be able to finish the remaining two. The lodge is owned and run by Colleen Nunn, a registered nursing sister with more than 20 years’ experience. She is registered with the Nursing Council, the Alzheimer’s Association of South Africa and the Parkinson Association of South Africa. They are looking to hire new staff members: a qualified sister to work every second weekend, as well as two staff nurses to work nightshifts only.

This happened after the victim alleged that he was walking on Willow Street when a VW Polo Vivo stopped in front of him and a man got out and asked him what the time was. When the victim informed him that he did not have a watch, the suspect punched him in the stomach, causing him to fall on the ground. The suspect continued to search him, took his cellphone and ran away. Police followed up on the information, and the suspect was tracked and arrested.

Community concerned over Netcare Continued from page one

The resident sent tame TIMES a list detailing the experience: • No routine of making patient’s bed before or after theatre. • No offer of assistance for bathing patient or assisting them to the restroom. • One has to remind staff to dispense medicine. • X-rays/radiation takes 30 minutes to fetch patients. • Discharge takes three hours. • Medical waste not disposed of correctly – blood in basin that was located in patient’s room; bloody cotton wool on top of the waste basket that was full of other medical waste and over flowing. Patients and visitors exposed to unnecessary risks due to medical waste not being disposed. •Noise levels high. •No water/ice given to patient after surgery - the patient had to ask a visitor to buy ice from the restaurant. • Junior staff not supervised and senior staff had no interest in visiting the wards. •Doctors and other senior staff members have complained but stopped due to no change taking place. Their requests and complaints have been ignored. • Nursing staff sourced by labour broker/temporary employment service – no loyalty and no respect is shown to patients.

Netcare speaks Tame TIMES approached Netcare in order to receive comment from the hospital group. Esme Abrahams, General Manager of the Netcare Union and Clinton Hospitals, was more than happy to meet the editor for an interview regarding the situation. “Netcare’s service protocol is based on ethical pillars, with customer service and quality healthcare being key aspects of the group,” said Abrahams.

“Customer service is my passion and attention at all times is important,” she added. Hailing from a strong nursing background, Abrahams joined Clinic Holdings, which later became Netcare, after a spell as a school nurse, and moved swiftly up the ranks from Unit Manager to Deputy Nursing Service Manager, and from Support Services Manager to Nursing Services Manager at the Park Lane Clinic. She was appointed Hospital Manager of the Rand Clinic in January 2004, where she is also responsible for the portfolio of nursing management. This unique situation allows her to empower, guide and delegate the functions within the operation while keeping a firm hand on service excellence. After a two-year stint in the US, Abrahams returned to South Africa with new knowledge and increased experience in customer service and quality healthcare. She

was instrumental in coordinating the evacuation of babies from the Natalspruit Hospital to Netcare Garden City Hospital during the strikes in 2010. She was also involved in the 2012 skin transplant of Isabella “Pippie” Kruger, as well as the expansion of the Mulbarton Hospital in 2007. Abrahams notes that serious plans are underway to build a new Netcare hospital in the South of Johannesburg in order to boost healthcare service in the area. Abrahams is “confident that the Union and Clinton uphold and maintain quality healthcare services, and will continue to provide her services to the hospitals with passion.” tame TIMES will be closely monitoring feedback from both community members and Netcare, and will keep a finger on the pulse of the development of the proposed hospital.

Alberton Day and Music Festival was a massive success, but it was about more than just fun. Funds were raised for various charities, including Epilepsy South Africa, which would like to thank the community for their involvement. Ex-Springbok player Thys Burger, who resides in Brackenhurst, assisted Epilepsy South Africa at the charity auction held at Alberton Day and Music Festival in December 2014. According to Colm Maguire, without Thys’s help they would never have been able to raise the R45 000 during the auction and raffle.

by Billiam Walsh THE JOURNAL OF WILLIAM BUTTON 17 February. Jinja, Uganda – Railway construction had been underway for nearly seven weeks before Henry Johnston passed away. It appears he had been stricken with a case of malaria. From what I’m told, it begins as normal flu does; with a cough, a sneeze, a fever. Construction had already come to a standstill when I received the telegram informing me of my departure. It was late afternoon when my train pulled into the station, a bustling circus of beggars and small markets. I crossed over the landing and before I had taken three steps, I was surrounded. But only one such beggar caught my attention. His hands were cupped at his mouth, his eyes tearful and face gaunt. I offered him a mango that I pulled from my satchel. He reached out hesitantly, hands shaking with uncertainty, as if I were going to change my mind. But once the fruit was firmly in his hands, he expressed his gratitude with his head at my feet. As I stepped away, I was met by Robert Lee, Henry’s assistant. He had been a resident of Africa for more than five years; his primary focus being the study of African languages. “Mister Button,” he said as his hand reached for mine, “welcome. Did you have a good trip?” I told him that I did but in fact, it was a tedious journey that took far too long. I think he would have smirked at me either way. The sun was already dipping behind the horizon as we followed the railway toward a silhouetted campsite. It was sheltered by an endless terrain filled with roars and the secret breeze of dusk that made it sound as if the fields of tall grass were whispering to one another. And as the sun finally disappeared and twilight filled the sky, all I remember thinking is that no candle could ever replace it. 18 February – The railway site was only a few hundred metres away from the campsite. I imagine it would have been a pleasant walk if Robert and I didn’t have the ingratitude of children giggling after us, chanting and clapping, “Muzungu, Muzungu, Muzungu.” Robert explained that the term was originally used to refer to someone wandering around aimlessly, but now only means white person. I waved back thinking they were just being friendly but Robert said I ought not to, “they’re like a tribe of baby monkeys,” he said, “a little bit of attention and they will never go away.” Turning to them, he swept his hand forward as if it were a besom and said something in their native tongue. Despite the seven weeks that Henry had worked on the railway, it looked as if it had been picked apart by hyenas: rail tracks, sleepers, fish-plates, fish-bolts, and steel keys including steel girders for viaducts and causeways all lay by the wayside. I knelt down amid the railway’s carcass and used it as a compass to guide my gaze. I looked into the distance toward the port city of Mombasa where construction had begun. I then turned toward the open landscape, which remained untouched by the white hand and wondered if this were the line’s terminus, and not Kisumu, on the eastern shore of Lake Victoria. To be continued next week ...

Nutrition and ways of maintaining a healthy lifestyle are topics that have become popular among many. It is no different when it comes to teaching our children to eat healthy food, although many parents may feel this is an impossible task since most children enjoy junk food. Although some may feel that they need a degree in nutrition in order to raise healthy children, Kidshealth.org has made the process of teaching offspring the importance of a healthy lifestyle a bit easier, by providing parents with some basic guidelines to help guide children to eat right and maintain a healthy weight. Here are 10 key rules to live by: (Source: kidshealth.org) “Parents control the supply lines.” Even though children might refuse to eat the ‘healthy stuff’ they will not go hungry and will eat what is available. Remember this next time you stock up the grocery cupboard. “From the foods you offer, kids get to choose what they will eat or whether to eat at all.” Have a selection of healthy foods they may choose from. This will give them some assurance that they have a say in the matter. “Quit the ‘clean-plate club.’“ Let your children stop eating when they feel they had enough. This way they will be less likely to overeat. “Start them young.” Expose them to many different healthy options as early as possible. Just remember that you may have to serve a new food several times before they accept it. “Rewrite the kids’ menu.” When dining at a restaurant, let them taste some of the food you ordered. You might just be surprised by their willingness to experiment with food. “Drink calories count.” Avoid sweetened drinks. Rather have water or milk at hand to quench their thirst. “Put sweets in their place.” Do not use dessert as a means of reward in order to get them to finish their healthy plate of food. Simply see dessert as an extension of the meal. “Food is not love.” Do not use food or sweets as a way to tell your children that you love them. “Kids do as you do.” As the old saying goes,

“Practise what you preach.” In order for your children to eat healthy, you need to show them how it is done. “Limit TV and computer time.” Experts have found that when eating in front of the television or computer, one consumes more food since you do not pay attention to what you are eating. Teach your children the ‘old way’ of eating at the dinner table.

Thanks from Epilepsy SA

Alberton Day and Music Festival was a massive success, but it was about more than just fun. Funds were raised for various charities, including Epilepsy South Africa, which would like to thank the community for their involvement. Ex-Springbok player Thys Burger, who resides in Brackenhurst, assisted Epilepsy South Africa at the charity auction held at Alberton Day and Music Festival in December 2014. According to Colm Maguire, without Thys’s help they would never have been able to raise the R45 000 during the auction and raffle.

SA still a Christian country There is always a special serenity about March and April. In the Cape, it is the one time of the year that the wind does not blow and in Gauteng it is the season for the roadside Cosmos in all its pink and white splendour. Easter is the perfect time to take leave – although some, including the CRL Commission, have called for Good Friday and Christmas to be removed from the calendar as public holidays. The arguments they use are that South Africa is, according to them, a secular state; we are a country of many religions and that the apartheid government supported Christianity. “ TO

REJECT

CHRISTIANITY

To reject Christianity because the apartheid government supported it is to throw the baby out with the bathwater. In 2006, Pew Research Center, which calls itself “a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world,” discovered that, of South Africa’s urban population, 41% is Protestant, 27% belongs to the African Independent Churches, 11% is Catholic and 2% are Jehovah’s Witnesses. This leaves a minority of 18% of our city-dwellers who are not Christian in any way. Of these, 3% are Muslim, 6% are “other” and 9% fall into the “none” category. www.pewforum.org/2009/04/23/religion-

BECAUSE THE

APARTHEID GOVERNMENT SUPPORTED IT IS TO THROW THE BABY OUT WITH THE BATHWATER.”

Anyone who has ever been on the roads between Gauteng and Polokwane at Easter will dispute this. The millions of Zionist Christian Church members who make the pilgrimage to Moria every year do not do so because they are atheists. The perception that SA is a secular state has been promoted by biased journalists and fundamentalist unbelievers. Nowhere in our constitution does it say that “South Africa is a secular state,” and our anthem calls on God to bless Africa. Although there are Bahais, Rastafarians and even Buddhists in South Africa, the vast majority of our people have Christian beliefs.

in-south-africa-15-years-after-the-end-ofapartheid

in the way of such things as legalising prostitution, and broadcasting pornography 24/7; and President Zuma’s continual references in his speeches to the return of Jesus and the nature of Heaven would seem to indicate that Christianity is anything but irrelevant in South Africa in 2015. Christianity still holds together the social fabric of our country. Churches in all areas are prominent in the list of voting stations used by the IEC and it is estimated that South Africa has 12 million ZCC members [iol.co.za] and 5 million Shembe followers [city press. co.za]. This is good for social stability. As GK Chesterton once wrote, “When men choose not to believe in God, they do not thereafter believe in nothing; they then become capable of believing in anything.”

In the 2001 census, almost 80% of South Africans called themselves Christians, but www.statssa.gov.za/census2011/faq the 2011 census failed to include a question about religion. According to Stats SA, in the decade between the two censuses South Africans somehow lost interest in religion. “In 2008, Stats SA embarked on a series of user consultations, to get advice as to what questions should be asked in the questionnaire. The question on religion was low on the list of priorities as informed by the users of census data, and it therefore did not make it on to the final list of data,” states the website. [lukas 24: 6-7]

Opinion piece by Palesa Yates

Soli Deo Gloria

TOP 2014 APPRENTICES: from the Denel Technical Academy (DTA) The awards ceremony for the 2014 top achieving apprentices from the Denel Technical Academy (DTA) was held at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Boksburg, on 19 March 2015. It was a proud moment for the young men and women as they stepped up to the stage to receive their awards for achievements in their respective fields of excellence. The Chief Executive of Denel Aviation, Mr Mike Kgobe, delivered the keynote speech. “Artisan training provided by Denel SOC at its campus in Ekurhuleni is helping to meet South Africa’s huge demand for skilled human resources in technical fields,” said Mr Kgobe. A total of 235 students have completed their first year of training at the DTA and will now serve apprenticeships at various companies and organisations before returning to Denel for the completion of their studies and qualifications.” Mr Kgobe also said that the country’s tertiary institutions must train at least 30 000 artisans per year to ensure a healthy economic growth rate and support the expansion of strategic infrastructure.

“This is the target to be achieved by 2030, according to the recommendations contained in the National Development Plan,” said Mr Kgobe. Located next to the OR Tambo International Airport, the DTA has built a solid reputation for the quality of artisans and skilled technicians it delivers to serve the aviation industry. In recent months the Academy has expanded the scope of courses it offers to include other engineering and technical sectors. The Denel Group allocates more than R64million a year to its “Talent Pipeline Model” that starts with mathematics and science programmes for high school learners and continues through bursaries for tertiary studies, internships and mentoring programmes. “For our country to achieve high levels of economic growth and address our social challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality, we must work together to invest in education, training and skills development to achieve our vision of a skilled and capable workforce,” said Mr Kgobe.

Lizeth Kotze Lizeth.kotze@tametimes.co.za In this day and age it is difficult for parents not to fear the world outside when it comes to our children. We are bombarded by news stories about child abductions or crimes committed against children. The thought that our children are exposed to these types of dangers while in our presence, even at a family restaurant, is enough to send chills down any parent’s spine. A family dinner at a local restaurant is something we all enjoy. The kids get all excited with the prospect of having dinner while playing in the kids’ recreational area together with the possibility of making a new friend along the way. Even though we want our children to enjoy the experience, we need to keep a watchful eye on them in order to keep them safe from possible dangers. ‘Stranger danger’ and child abductions are a reality. As parents we should empower our children on what to do when they find themselves in a situation that makes them uncomfortable. We must help them understand how to deal with potentially dangerous scenarios. Defining who qualifies as a stranger You have probably explained the term

‘stranger’ to your toddler already. Make sure that he understands that a stranger is anyone he does not know - whether man or woman, young or old, smartly dressed, polite or appearing to mean well. Basic stranger rules all children should know Children should be taught not to do the following under any circumstances: - accept gifts or sweets from any stranger, - go anywhere without adult supervision, - go off on their own (not even to the bathroom). If approached by a stranger, they should run towards and tell a trusted adult. Parents should consider where they choose to sit in a restaurant. If possible, sit as close as possible to the kids’ play area. Avoid sitting close to the kitchen or entrance of the restaurant. Explain to your child what you expect of them before you even arrive at the restaurant and stick to the rules you set. A simple rule like, “Come and tell mommy before you just go off to the bathroom on your own” might just save the apple of your eye’s life.Kids should not be expected to be adults and thus cannot be expected to sit still at the table during the course of the meal. We should consider them as being adults in training and thus develop their intuition for danger. [everydayfamily.com]

Drugs ruin lives tame TIMES

HAS BEGUN A WAR ON

drugs Suicide victim’s mom speaks out By Bianca Maré and Justus Abrams Cora Visser, mother of seventeen-yearold Marco Visser, shared her traumatising, heart-wrenching story and the battles she has faced as a mom of a troubled teenager. She speaks out with the hope of reaching other parents, as well as teens, who are possibly in the same position her son was in and - most importantly - to commemorate the memory of her son. Seventeen-year-old Marco was a normal teen, a little withdrawn, soft-natured, yet a very popular boy. His mom described him as a respectable boy who had good Christian values. He was very good with his hands, and would build little motorized cars in his spare time, she says. It was when he started attending Elspark Secondary School that she noticed a gradual change in her son. He became moody, temperamental, was constantly on his phone, and his grades dropped dramatically. He was also constantly in trouble at school and was very depressed. He seemed to have little desire to live. This was evident with his two attempts to take his own life. Only then did Cora and her husband come to learn that her son had a drug problem. Like most parents, Cora and her husband reacted negatively to this situation by fighting with Marco and this contributed to the downward spiralling of the situation. Cora states that parents need to learn different methods of disciplining and reaching out to their kids, especially if fighting is no longer effective. Cora says that they tried their utmost best to help their son. She says they took him to doctors, psychiatrists, booked him into rehab, organised a holiday to Cape Town for him, and she even resigned from her job just to spend more time with him, which did eventually result in their noticing a change in Marco. Marco and his mom slowly began to rebuild their relationship and he started speaking openly to her about the drug situation at his school. She eventually removed him from Elspark Secondary School and home-schooled him, and his grades improved dramatically. He was, however, still trying to quit dagga. Marco’s parents were pleased with his improvement and planned on buying him a car he picked out himself, as an incentive to encourage him to

continue persevering. All seemed well in the Visser home, but little did they know that Marco was still battling with depression. It was on the morning of 28 November 2014 that Marco sent his mom a song by James Arthur and sent his sister a text message saying that he loved her and that she must look after her baby. Alarmed by her brother’s message, Marco’s sister contacted her mother, alerting her to the message Marco had sent her. Cora immediately called him and detected that he was not okay. Marco’s last words to his mom were “I love you,” and then he dropped the phone. When Cora arrived home she could instantly sense that something was not right. Her most dreaded suspicion was realised when she found her son hanging from the roof of the lapa in the backyard. Her nightmare, however, did not end there. When Cora informed all Marco’s friends that he had passed away, she received a devastating text message. The message read: “He told me he was going to gas himself … well I just wanted you to know that I was the one that motivated him to do it.” Cora says that she reported this to the Primrose SAPS, but to date no investigation – that she is aware of - has been launched into the matter. Cora says that she has, however, handed the situation over to God and hopes that parents will speak out and stand together to fight against this drug plague in our communities. It is alleged that about eight teenagers who attended Elspark Secondary School have committed suicide in the past year, including the latest case which was reported last week. Cora pleads with all parents to be involved in their children’s lives. Parents should know who their children associate with; and, although trust is important, should also constantly monitor their children’s cellphones. But parents should focus on communicating with their children, she says, and building an open, trusting relationship with them. We approached the Elspark Secondary School for comment, but were referred to the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE). At the time of going to print we had not yet received a response from the GDE.

ONE DIRECTION PAYS 'MARIJUANA BOND' TO PHILLIPINES

Members of boy band One Direction, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson, have had to pay a bond of 200 000 pesos ($4500) in order for the group to be allowed into the Phillipines to play a concert at the seafront grounds of the largest mall in the country on 21 and 22

March, the third month of the year, is named after Mars, the Roman god of war. In this spirit, tame TIMES has decided to launch a war against drugs within the community. Recent articles and news relating to drug use, especially among schoolchildren, sometimes even without their knowledge, have left many people wondering what can be done. We believe that education is key to understanding what drug abuse is all about, how to identify certain drugs, what symptoms to look out for, and of course, where to find help. For the month of March, we will be discussing a different type of drug every week. This week, we have information about one of the biggest problems in communities, dagga.

In the last few years, drug use in South Africa has been on the rise. We urge the community to inform the police, local CPF or security companies when they suspect any drug abuse. According to Harmony Addictions Clinic, figures published by the South African Police Service show that drug abuse is involved in 60% of all crimes. ‘’To make matters worse, the Central Drug Authority’s (CDA) Dr David Bayever reckons that up to 15% of South Africans abuse drugs,’’ the report stated. In 2014, the total number of drug-related crimes reported in Alberton was 186, according to www. crimestatssa.com. That includes only the cases that were reported to the police. It shows a drastic increase of 141 cases since 2004, where the figure was 45.

MARIJUANA IT DOESN'T STOP THERE

Marijuana, better known as dagga, is also known as “the gateway drug,” and is perceived by many as harmless. The reality, however, is that marijuana often leads to the abuse of other drugs. It is most popular among adolescents due to its easy availability and the belief that it is less dangerous than other drugs. Experts warn that children who start smoking marijuana tend to drop out of school as it destroys their motivation to achieve anything. It is also believed by many to be the most common gateway drug to heroin and other “hard” drugs.

SHORT TERM EFFECTS

• • • • • •

LONG TERM EFFECTS

Disorientation Anxiety Increased heart-rate Drowsiness Loss of inhibition Increased appetite

Abusing dagga while pregnant is not only dangerous to the mother but could cause learning impairment in the unborn child. Other long term effects on the abuser include: • Lowered immune system • Cancer • Lung damage • Sterility of sperm

Driving while under the influence of marijuana is just as dangerous as driving drunk, as it can slow reaction times and coordination. Long Term Effects Because the high that marijuana gives often gets weaker with continual use, abusers will then begin to look to the next drug to get their high. “Also called pot, weed, cannabis, dope, grass, and Mary Jane, marijuana is typically smoked, but can also be added to food and consumed.” [sourced from http://www.rehabcenter.net/marijuanaaddiction-and-the-best-rehab-centers-fortreatment/; ww w.drugs.com] For more information visit www.drugs.com or www.healministries.com

Immigration spokeswoman Elaine Tan said "The condition is intended to protect the public interest should the band members commit any violation during their stay in the Philippines,". [Sourced from http://www. mlive.com/]

YOUR WORLD THIS WEEK Dutch man threatens to urinate on artworks

CELEBRATES HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

Artist Rob van Koningsbruggen was banned from Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art after he threatened to urinate on works, including those by South African born artist, Marlene Dumas. A two-and-a-half-year feud between Van Koningsbruggen and the museum was sparked when Van Koningsbruggen was allegedly left off the invitation list to attend the

museum’s grand reopening after a facelift. A few days before the reopening he allegedly wrote an email to the museum, threatening to urinate on the artworks, which his attorneys countered with a claim that Van Koningbruggen’s comments were meant as satire and his sense of humour was misinterpreted as anger. www.artnetnews.com

PUTIN L AUGHS OFF RUMOURS Human Rights Day is linked with 21 March 1960 and the events of Sharpeville. According to www.parliament.gov.za, on that day 69 people died and 180 were wounded when police fired on a peaceful crowd that had gathered to protest against the pass laws. It was more than a protest against the pass laws of the apartheid regime. It was an affirmation by common people, rising in unison to proclaim their rights, and it became an iconic date in South Africa’s troubled history. The Sharpeville massacre is regarded by many as the defining moment in South Africa’s struggle for liberation. info: www.parliament.co.za, photo: www.coolipadwallpapers.com

Russian President Vladimir Putin made his first public appearance in 11 days on 16 March. He laughed off speculation about his health and told Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev in St Petersburg that life would be boring without gossip. He cancelled a number of scheduled events, including a visit to Kazakhstan that was due to take place on 12 and 13 March, as well as the signing of an agreement with South Ossetia. Upon his return to the limelight, he ordered the northern fleet of the Russian navy to conduct a massive combat readiness exercise. www.theindependent.com

20 KILLED IN TUNIS SIEGE At least 20 people were killed at the Bardo National Museum in Tunisia on 18 March after two gunmen stormed in, sparking a three-hour siege and hostage situation. According to Tunisian Prime Minister, Habib Essid, at least 44 people of various nationalities were wounded, including two South Africans. The attack happened a day after Tunisia announced a major seizure of weapons from jihadi groups,

AIRA SIA SEARCH CALLED OFF

Rescuers called off the search for the remaining passengers of Flight QZ8501 on 17 March, almost three months after the Airbus A320-200 went down in stormy weather on its way to Singapore, killing all 162 people on board. The international search, which included ships and aircraft from several nations, has been scaled back in recent weeks, with only a small number of new bodies found. A total of 106 bodies have been recovered, the last three found over the weekend of 14 March. www.news24.com

triggering speculation that the museum attack might have been launched in revenge, The Guardian reported. Mounting anxiety that jihadi violence is spilling over Tunisia’s border from the neighbouring country, Libya, caused troops to be deployed on the Libyan border to intercept what the authorities believe are terrorist groups bringing in men and equipment. www.theguardian.com

Six killed by lightning

Six people died and five were injured when they were struck by lightning on the N8 about 20km outside Botshabelo. The men, aged between 20 and 40, are construction workers who took shelter from the rain in a structure close by. The five who sustained minor injuries were treated on the scene by ER24 paramedics and other services and transported to a local hospital. www.er24.com

The ABSA Cape Epic takes place every year around the last week of March and the first week of April. The race is held over eight days and includes a time-trial prologue. The route changes every year, and leads aspiring amateur and professional mountain bikers from around the world through approximately 800 kilometres of the unspoilt nature of the Western Cape and up approximately 15 000m of climbing over some of the most magnificent passes in South Africa. This year, brother duo Pieter-Ben and Samuel Pienaar took part and had a magnificent race. Congratulations!

Amoure continues to shine

She has proven that she is champ-worthy as she was just pipped by the 2014 National Champ, and broke the Gauteng record of 60.57seconds in the 400m Hurdles. Amoure le Roux started on a high note by winning the 400m straight on Friday in a time of 55.88 seconds. South Africa finally seems to have shaken off the choking monkey on their backs during the pool stages of every Cricket World Cup series by winning their first ever knockout match at a World Cup. Captain AB de Villiers boldly declared on 17 March that they would not choke in the quarterfinal match the following day. Thanks to an incredible team effort, this prediction came true. Dale Steyn was back to being fast and furious, Imran Tahir and JP Duminy were exceptional in their execution and Quinton de Kock looked like the player he was before the ankle injury that nearly ruled him out of the World Cup. JP Duminy’s haul included a hat-trick, three for 29. Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first, leaving the Proteas chasing just 134 to win. The Proteas reached their target in the 18th over, trashing Sri Lanka with nine wickets and 32 overs to spare. South Africa headed to Eden Park, Auckland for the semi-final match against New Zealand, taking place today (24 March), putting the Proteas one step closer to World Cup victory. However, this World Cup has been ‘’more unpredictable than most women’’ according to journalist Michael Mentz. The quarter-final victory has united South Africa like only sport can, but the nation should wait before they place the champagne on ice for the finals taking place on 29 March.
