The anticipation is over The anticipation for Albertonians is over. The big yellow machines are busy preparing the grounds for new exciting developments on the old Newmarket grounds. We are all spoiled now with the Makro on our doorsteps and soon it will get even better. The Rejem-Genesis joint venture plans to open a Homeware and Fitment Centre in April 2015 adjacent to Makro, which will include a new concept Tile Africa, various homeware offerings as well as a state-ofthe-art Tiger Wheel and Tyre fitment centre. The Rejem-Linton-Moolman joint venture will open the long awaited Newmarket Mall of approximately 34 000 square meters in October 2015. This development will bring a lot of firsts to Alberton shoppers - our first Hyper store, namely Checkers Hyper, a large format Foodlovers Market, the biggest Builders Warehouse, lots of restaurants including Spur, Wimpy, Pannarotti’s and a John Dory’s. The east of Alberton will also have their own Virgin Active complete with swimming pool. The developers have informed us that this is only the beginning of the total redevelopment of the old Newmarket racecourse. It will not only forever change the face of Alberton, and create new shopping habits for its people; but, more than that, it will create jobs, business opportunities and bring revenue from outside Alberton to our area. These developments will be enormously beneficial to all.

DEVELOPMENTS: Exciting developments are underway on the old Newmarket grounds.

Lenie vier 100 jaar

Wat ‘n wonderlike voorreg was dit vir my om die afgelope naweek by Me. Geniet hierdie uitgawe. Alberton: What a history: 1950’s

Omdat sy omtrent driemaal so groot soos sy regterduim was, was hy in die omgang as “Ou Duim” bekend. Ons kinders was tog so bang vir daardie duim. Sundowners lapa destroyed Stephanie Conradie stephanie.conradie@tametimes.co.za On 29 August the lapa at the Sundowners Pub, in the Kromvlei area, burned down. Spencer Martin, owner of Sundowners pub, explained that he arrived at the pub at 11:00 on Friday morning, and the staff were doing stock take when they noticed a small fire in the lapa area. “The wind was blowing too hard and the fire spread very quickly,” Spencer said. He told tame TIMES that he immediately phoned 10111 but they advised him that he needed to phone 112. According to Spencer, the Ekurhuleni Fire Department and the City of Johannesburg Fire Department first disagreed about which area the pub falls under. Eventually Ekurhuleni Fire Department

responded to the fire. Three tanks arrived on the scene, but they ran out of water and could not pump water out of the swimming pool, as they did not have a pump. William Ntladi, Ekurhuleni Emergency Services Spokesperson, said that they will be looking into the matter. City of Johannesburg Fire Department also responded to assist and the fire was finally extinguished. Nana Radebe, City of Johannesburg EMS Spokesperson, confirmed that the Kiblerpark Fire Department was dispatched to assist Ekurhuleni Emergency Services on the scene. Neither Radebe nor Ntladi could comment about the fact that the Ekurhuleni tanks ran out of water. Fortunately none of the staff were injured and the main building of the pub was unharmed.

DAMAGE: The Sundowners Lapa was destroyed by a fire last Friday.

Community

Renasci helping addicts in Alberton “We realised that as a community we don’t do much to reach out to the addicts that become outcasts of society.” Renasci Addiction Treatment Programme is a new registered NPO based in Mayberry Park. Renasci, which means “Fresh Start” in Latin, is a faith-based addiction treatment programme integrating traditional addiction treatment therapies with the concept that God is the only true answer to gaining lasting victory over addiction. The programme will initially be offered as an out-patient programme but their long term goal is to have an in-house residential centre. “We realised that as a community we don’t do much to reach out FOUNDER: Theresa Oelofse to the addicts that become outcasts of society, and sometimes their families, because the families just cannot live with the pain of seeing their loved ones slowly dying of a self-inflicted disease,” said Theresa Oelofse, Founder of Renasci. “The road to recovery is a long hard journey, but they need not walk it alone.” Their vision is to introduce the true God as the only true solution to lasting addiction recovery and the start of a new life. Their mission is to facilitate addiction recovery and unlock the potential to a new way of living by addressing addiction with a holistic approach looking after the physical, emotional, physiological and spiritual aspects of the addict and addict’s family. “We will become involved with prevention and awareness campaigns to be rolled out at primary schools and high schools with an effort to educate young children to prevent them from falling prey to and alcohol dependency,” Theresa concluded. If you would like to get involved with the programme contact Theresa Oelofse on renasciatp@gmail.com, 076 482 9464 or visit their website www.renasciatc.info.

Helpende Hand Alberton skep hoop by skole

Elke rugsakkie bevat ʼn skêr, gom, liniaal, witbord, penneblikkie, inkleurpotlode, uitdraaikryte, waskryte, witbordpenne, uitveër, skerpmaker, inkleurboek, witborduitveër, klei, waterverf, legkaart, springtou en ’n tennisbal.

Men of Honour

Mr SA Finalist, Johan Herbst writes: Sharing words of upliftment in print is not something I do very often, because I always say that actions speak louder than words. Getting the phrase “Men of Honour” out there, however, will inspire others to take these words and change them into action. What does it mean to you to uplift the male citizens of South Africa to the status of Men of Honour? What is the difference between an ordinary guy and a man of honour? I believe we should all become “Men of Honour” by living the words, not just saying them. Just a thought…

CMR Alberton is looking for the biological fathers of the following children:

“Spring shows what God can do with a drab and dirty world.” Virgil A. Kraft

The air is warming up and we see new leaves on the trees. Soon the blossoms will appear, which means spring is in the air and that it is time to spring clean your house and to throw out old and unwanted items. We all have white elephants in our houses or clothing that we have not worn for the past year. Take all your unwanted items to CMR Alberton. They know plenty of needy families that you can help. CMR also has a “dress for less boutique,” where they sell the items you no longer need to unemployed women in the community. These ladies have families to support and re-sell these items to do so. This in turn helps the CMR, as they can then help new families that they have not helped before. Contact CMR Alberton - they could assist you by collecting the items from you, or you could take your items to the CMR offices at 18 Lenin Street, Raceview, Alberton. For further information please contact Ankia on 011 907 2922.

This level of victim blaming, from the very organisations charged with protecting the public, inspired global outrage. New Natalspruit hospital welcomes its first baby Charity Moyo

charity@tametimes.co.za The newly built Natalspruit Hospital in Vosloorus, which officially opened last week, welcomed its first baby on 20 August. The bouncing baby boy was delivered at 08:50 at the new facility, weighing 3, 95kg. Mother Nonzwakazi Msindo, who is from Palm Ridge, was relocated with other patients from the old hospital to the new facility in Vosloorus. Holding her bundle of joy Msindo said, “When MEC Mahlangu said this is a state-of-the art hospital she was not exaggerating. Speeding driver blames “call of nature” “The Ekurhuleni bike squad had to hit speeds of between 280 and 290km/h to apprehend the speedster.” A 21-year-old driver in a powerful red BMW M3 was arrested on the morning of 24 August on the R59 freeway after being clocked at 202km/h and failing to stop on the instruction of a police officer. The culprit’s powerful machine could only be matched by EMPD mounted unit which only managed to corner the driver well into MidVaal jurisdiction. He was caught at 06:38. “For travelling at that breakneck speed, the M3 driver advanced the reason that he was rushing to attend to the call of nature,” EMPD Spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said. “The Ekurhuleni bike squad had to hit speeds of between 280 and 290km/h to apprehend the speedster,” Kgasago explained. Kgasago added that the young lad was gladly afforded the opportunity to relieve himself at Brackendowns Police Station where he has been detained. This special speed operation on the R59 freeway, which started at 06:00 and lasted for four hours, was conducted between Heidelberg and Kliprivier turnoffs. Additionally, between 07:00 and 08:30, three more speedsters were nabbed. A 31-year-old driver on a Honda super-bike registered 198km/h and claimed that he was dashing to a family meeting, while a VW Polo driver caught at 175km/h, stated that his 10-year-old daughter’s crying prompted him to press hard on the pedal in order to get home quicker. The fourth culprit was arrested when he was caught doing 182km/h in a BMW sedan, claiming that he was late for an appointment. The BMW M3 driver was refused bail and appeared in court last Monday. All the other arrestees were booked in at Brackendowns Police Station on charges of reckless and negligent driving and were granted bail of between R500 and R1 000.

Patrolling officers make arrest After a tip-off from a security company, SAPS officers reacted to an armed robbery in Jackson Street, arresting two young men and recovering the stolen cellphones. On 26 August, Fox Security informed Brackendowns SAPS officers, who were out patrolling in Brackenhurst, that two men had been robbed of their cellphonee by two armed robbers in Jackson Street. The SAPS officers caught the suspects in an open field along the R59 and recovered the victims’ cellphones. The suspects were arrested, and the officers found the men in possession of three knives. The two suspects, aged 20 and 22 years old, appeared at Palm Ridge Court on charges of robbery with a weapon other than a firearm and possession of a dangerous weapon.

BLUE LIGHT DELIGHT: All the children had a turn to drive in the police vehicle with Sgt. Lindi Moloi and another officer. On 21 August the Brackendowns SAPS, together with Mrs United Nations SA 2014 finalist Desiree Oliphant, visited a crèche in Van Bergen Street Brackendowns as part of their community project. Communications Officer Sgt. Lindi Moloi addressed the children and taught them about safety at home and on the road. She told them that they should not just open the door to strangers, but should call their parents first. When on the road, children should not distract their parents while driving, and children should remain seated and buckled in at all times. Sgt. Moloi also told the children that, should they be in any kind of trouble, they must call the police on 10111.

Mrs Oliphant brought puzzles for the children and told them that all children are special and that they should not listen to anyone who says they are not special. In what turned out to be the highlight of the day, all the children had a chance to ride in a police vehicle with Sgt Lindi Moloi and another officer. Brackendowns SAPS thanked Mrs Oliphant for partnering with them in the fight against crime, saying that her #Switch campaign was a success. They also said a special thank you to all schools in Brackendowns Policing Precint for their professionalism at all the times and for always making safety a priority in their schools.

Working together we can reduce crime Last week three suspects were arrested for house-breaking by members of the public, the CPF and Fox Security. On Monday 25 August at 13:30 a resident of a complex in St Michael Street, New Redruth, arrived home to find suspects breaking into a unit in the complex. The suspects soon realized that they had been observed and fled the scene in a silver Ford Figo, with the resident in hot pursuit. At the corner of Swartkoppies and Michelle Ave, drivers of Fox Security Armed Response vehicles and other members of the public noticed the high-speed chase and assisted the resident to force the suspects off the road. The suspects lost control of their vehicle in Hibiscus Avenue, Generaal Alberts Park in the veld and Fox Security, CPF members and members of the public worked together to arrest the three suspects. The trio was detained at Alberton SAPS for house-breaking.

ARRESTED: Fox Security with two of the suspects

JOB WELL DONE: Colonel Hutchons with Investigating Officer Sgt. Aubrey Mamadisa and Lt. Col. Bongi Gasa On 20 August this year a case of house robbery that has been in court since May 2013 was finalised and the suspect was sentenced to 15 years in prison. In May 2013 the suspect was arrested for a house robbery in Kalkoentjie Street, in which he tied up the complainant’s hands and feet, and stole jewellery and R540. Brackendowns SAPS caught the suspect on the same evening and arrested him after finding the jewellery and money in his possession. His bail was opposed and he was detained at Boksburg prison throughout the court-case. It was also found that the suspect had previous convictions such as house-breaking, business-breaking, possession of suspected stolen property and possession of an unlicensed firearm at Bedfordview Police Station. Col. Arikum and Const. Venter were the arresting officers.

Planning your Dream Wedding

Every woman dreams of a beautiful fairytale wedding. The wedding dress is usually the first item on any bride’s checklist. However, there are many other aspects that need to be planned in advance, such as the venue, a preacher and the wedding contract. Here are a few pointers to guide you. Remember, planning a wedding is a big project that involves a lot of money; the more organised you are, the better the outcome will be. Bruidsgids 2013 gives the following pointers:

CONGRATULATIONS: tame TIMES layout artist Stephanie Tepper married Pieter Els this past weekend. Everyone at tame TIMES wishes Mr and Mrs Els a beautiful life together.

1) Research costs first and establishes how much you are, realistically, willing to spend. 2) Prioritise: the venue sets the date and place, and venues are often booked in advance. It is therefore a good idea to sort this out first. The wedding dress is something that you can leave until approximately six or four months to the date, to make sure that the dress will fit you. If you order a dress that has to be shipped in from overseas, you must leave enough time for shipping. Sometimes the dress is too expensive to buy at once and you might want to pay monthly installments over a period of time. 3) Dividing the costs: who is willing to contribute to your wedding? If you can establish this early on, then you budget and can allocate tasks to the different contributors. 4) When you book a photographer, it is wise

to do a practice photo-session to determine whether you are satisfied with the style. Many couples use the same photographer for their engagement shoot to make sure that they are satisfied with the result. The last thing you want is to feel unhappy when you receive your final photos. At the end of the day, photos and video memories are all you have left. 5) Do not spend money saved for the wedding. This will set you back and you might struggle to make your budget work. 6) Lastly, remember to have fun. The journey to the chapel should be a rewarding and exciting experience for the bride and groom. Do not let the wedding overshadow the real meaning of the day; that you and your partner are vowing everlasting love to each other. The wedding is a mere celebration of this commitment.

Rethink Tradition

Try cocktails in lieu of tea, barbecue instead of buttered scones. Think about themes:

Bridal Shower:

Who’s Invited to a Bridal Shower?

Entertainment Shower,

where guests dress up as famous characters and bring gifts like videos, CDs, and theater tickets. Assign everyone to perform their favorite movie lines.

Sports Shower,

Couple The Basics Why spend your Saturday afternoon yawning over the ribbon bouquet when you can hang with a crowd far more entertaining than Mom’s country-club friends? Go ahead and attend those must-attend functions, but think about putting together a party that includes the guys too. Here’s the dirt on throwing a Jack & Jill party.

The Idea

A couple shower is closer to a cocktail or dinner party than it is to a bridal shower. Female and male relatives, as well as close friends, are invited. The party still revolves around gifts, but they’re presented to both the bride and the groom, and generally they are a mix of home goods and guyfriendly gadgets. The shower can range from an afternoon barbecue at your parents’ place to a cocktail party at your favorite restaurant or bar. There are no hard-and-fast rules about planning, though, so do what feels best.

The Guest List

You might want to limit the guest list to the couple’s contemporaries who consider girl/boy proximity a given. Steer clear of people who may be offended by a coed shower, but don’t neglect loved ones who wouldn’t want to miss out on these festivities

As guests arrive, play a name game so

where you could

organize a basketball game, rounds of tennis, Ultimate Frisbee, volleyball, or tag football. Chip in for his-and-her in-line skates, tennis rackets, or snorkeling gear.

Around-the-World Shower, where you serve international cuisine like paella, stir-fried vegetables, or gnocchi, and salivate over gifts such as a pasta maker, a wok, or a fondue pot.

Beach Shower, where everyone plays

paddleball and splashes in the waves. Set up a tent and keep the cooler full of drinks. Gifts could be picnic baskets for two or matching beach towels.

Make Everyone Comfortable

Q

.My matron of honor asked me to give her a bridal shower guest list. Do I invite all the women who will be invited to the wedding or just close family and friends? Also, I will be inviting several people from the East Coast to my West Coast wedding. Do I send them bridal shower invitations, even though I know they won’t be able to attend, or will this look like a ploy to get more bridal shower gifts?

Feel A

.You don’t have to invite every woman who’s invited to your wedding (think of the expense for your bridesmaids if you did!). The guest list should include your closest female pals and relatives (and your fiance’s mom, sis, and other close female friends and family). As for far-flung guests, sending a shower invite is a nice gesture even if you know they can’t attend -- it shows them that they’re important to you and that you would have wanted them there.

Since the rowdiness factor can shoot skyhigh when boys are involved, make sure the girls know that the guest list includes folks of both genders. Include this information on the invitation, or call everyone to clue them in to the fact that this won’t just be an afternoon of girl talk and lingerie-giving. As guests arrive, play a name game so that everyone gets introduced and feels at ease. Have everyone say how they know the couple of honor. Information sourced from www.theknot.com

Running out of landfill space

Making cold calls hot By Debbie Hanekom

Growing your business is no easy task. The truth is that your opposition is marketing and building their business and customer base exactly the same as you. In order to reach your new customers, you need to communicate. This would normally start off with cold calling. I have never met a salesperson who loves cold calling. The reason is that they are terrified because they do not know what to say. Why? Their product has not changed, their prices have gone up and they are trying to attract new customers that have been buying from the opposition for years. This would scare even the strongest salesperson.

6 tips for making successful cold calls Have you ever wondered what you should do with those old remotes, cellphones, and computers or even exhausted light bulbs? E-waste is considered the fastest growing waste stream worldwide as electronics are constantly being upgraded.

Dispose of it responsibly. The e-Waste Association of South Africa (eWASA) has been collecting, sorting and disposing of e-waste in an environmentally friendly way since 2008. The Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA), leaders in the waste management industry who are committed to supporting professional waste management practices, urges South Africans to support eWASA and dispose of e-waste correctly. “E-waste falls under the larger waste spectrum and the general public are urged to dispose of electronic waste correctly. E-waste can be defined as anything that runs on electricity and includes goods that require batteries to operate,” Dr Suzan Oelofse, President of IWMSA, said. “E-waste should not be discarded with municipal waste as it contains heavy metals such as mercury, which can contaminate water resources. It should be collected and separated as the discarded equipment contains valuable, rare and hazardous materials,” Keith Anderson, Chairman of eWASA, explained. “The valuable and rare resources can be recovered and enter the product life cycle again as raw materials, while the hazardous components need to be treated and disposed of in an environmentally sound manner.” South Africa has a well-developed, formal e-waste management system that collects, refurbishes, dismantles and recycles discarded products. Most urban centres have various collection points for e-waste, and eWASA member companies and their partners, including retailers such as Makro and Pick n Pay, are working to expand the current footprint of 635 collection sites. “Recycled e-waste plastics are used to manufacture fence droppers, roof tiles and guttering. Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) glass can be used for road surfacing and Waste2Art projects create crafts, jewellery and arts using dismantled e-waste,” Anderson said. The Waste Classification and Management Regulations under the Waste Act* call for a total ban of the disposal of e-waste in landfill sites by 2021, with a ban on mercury- bearing lamps by 2016. “E-waste workers can be exposed to many harmful effects of carcinogens and other hazardous substances found in e-waste,” explained Anderson. “South Africa is running out of landfill space and we cannot afford to discard valuable resources. The next eWASA e-waste collection day event will take place on 19 September as part of the Clean-Up and Recycle Week initiative and we urge the community to take part and help preserve our environment,” concluded Oelofse. Separate your e-waste from the rest of your rubbish and take it to a collection point near you. Visit www.mywaste.co.za or the eWASA website (www.ewasa.org) to find a collection point in your area. For more information about IWMSA, visit www.iwmsa. co.za or contact 011 675 3462. * R634 Waste Classification & Management Regulations

1) Do your research: Open up an Excel spread sheet to start recording any details that you already have on hand from the company: name, address, telephone number, contact person etc.2) Decide what you want from your customer before picking up the phone – perhaps to set up an appointment or maybe to bring by a new product that you are launching or to show them how to use your new online buying facility. 3) Write a script of what you are going to say to your customer and practise it – for all cold calling this is the most important point. Never come across like a typical salesperson, because after your first few words the customer will disengage and all they will hear from you is “blah, blah, blah,” and wait for you to come up for breath before saying “NO” or “Not interested.” Does that sound familiar? 4) Make a list of objections or questions that they could possibly have, work out some answers and, when they come up, answer them. I bet you are going

to get the same objections and questions again and again. Always make sales calls at the beginning of the day for 3 reasons: 1. Normally people will be at their desks first thing in the morning to do their planning for the day 2. They are not yet involved in their own daily activities. 3. You can get your cold calling out of the way first thing and then concentrate on your day. 5) Successful sales calls should be done standing up. The problem is that we slump behind our desks when doing the calls so that no one can hear us. Why? When making your calls standing up, you will open up your diaphragm, and this will make you feel in control and in a strong frame of mind. You will be very aware of what the customer is saying. Also, use a headset - that way you will have your hands free to find information should the customer ask for it, and you will also be extra aware of what your customer is telling you. This will ensure that you will not just be making another sales call.

Would you like to be ready to sell at any time? I will be sharing secrets with you that will enable you not just to change your sales, but also to focus on other areas of your life. Become Unstoppable. www.unstoppableme.co.za, debbie@unstoppableme.co.za

Pedestrian safety tips Provided by Reef Tankers

Statistics reveal that 40% of fatalities on the roads are pedestrians. Many informal settlements in South Africa are situated next to highways, thereby increasing the risk of pedestrian fatalities. Children who attend schools in

rural communities and walk several kilometres next to the roads to and from their schools daily are also at risk. Pedestrians, however, who follow these five simple rules will ALWAYS return home safely to their families.

LOOK UP When walking, it is important to maintain focused, know where you are going and pay attention at all times. When walking in groups, maintain focus by not talking while you walk, because this shifts your focus and leaves you vulnerable to being struck by a motorist. Look up while walking and you will be aware of other vehicles before you end up in a hazardous situation. KEEP YOUR EYES MOVING If you can see it, you can prevent it. Keep your eyes moving at all times to identify cars around you. Remember, when crossing the road you must always look RIGHT – LEFT – RIGHT. Only once it is clear, may you cross the road. Do not focus on one object for more than two seconds, keep your eyes moving to ensure it is safe to cross the road. ENOUGH SPACE In order to walk safely and be safe at all times, ensure that you always have enough space to walk. By using the walkway at all times, you will be clear of moving cars and reckless drivers. If walking in a group, it is important always to walk in single file and share the walking space with others. KEEP RIGHT AT ALL TIMES. ALWAYS BE SEEN Make sure all vehicles on the road can see you at all times. If walking at night, ALWAYS wear white clothing to ensure that cars can see you from a distance. Listen for cars in the distance and make sure you are not in the road. Ensure that the motorists see you; remember the highway is for vehicles that may not stop in time to avoid you. Never walk on freeways.

GET THE BIG PICTURE It is important to identify and see all the cars around you. This is done by “getting the bigger picture.” By paying attention at all times you will know the safest areas to cross the road, the number of vehicles around you and the safest part of the road to travel on. Remember always to walk in a safe and controlled manner, avoiding roadways and always staying on the pavement.

Para-Archery on the rise

Alberton Athletic Club time trial results

Roedolf Walker 011 862 8500

Renowned para-archer Shaun Anderson has started a project with Frances Vorwerg School to introduce the sport of archery to the special needs learners of the school. Anderson lost the use of his left arm in an accident in 2004. In 2010 he took his first shot with a compound bow and fell in love with the sport of archery. After making headlines for being the first South African para-archer to compete against ablebodied archers in the World Championship in Warsaw in August 2013, he is on the fast track to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio 2016. Despite the many hours he spends practising, Anderson jumped at the chance From left to right: Shaun Anderson, Prof KT van Warmelo, Ms. B Manning, Ms. N Viljoen, to help the school. The project at Frances Mr. J Oberholtzer, Mr. L van Wyk Vorwerg School is, according to Anderson, National Archery Association, has donated the basics initially, after which Anderson will his way of helping the children learn that they too are capable of doing anything. the bows, arrows and butts needed to start handle the more advanced training himself. “These kids are told by society that they are teaching the children to shoot. The first part “The simple act of drawing the bow and not capable. This will give them an opportunity of the process is coaching the educators shooting, regardless of hitting the target or not, to prove to themselves and other people that to teach the children to shoot correctly. has a pronounced effect on these kids’ lives,” they can do anything they put their minds to.” According to Anderson, each child is a said Anderson. “The boost to self-confidence Anderson, in collaboration with unique case and because of this it is best this gives the children is incredible. Finding Prof. KT van Warmelo and Barbara for a teacher who knows each one, with that they can perform these actions inspires Manning, secretary of the South African their abilities and disabilities, to teach them them and their friends to reach new heights.”

New state-of-the-art gym in Meyersdal

What was previously known as Forever Fit Gym in Meyersdal has been closed down and a new state-of-the-art gym, Premium Fitness Centre opened its doors on Friday, 29 August, with new owners, investors and management. At the official opening of the gym, guest speaker Martin Dewee shared his insight on the negative influence that steroids has on the body. Martin is a four-time SA Natural Heavyweight Body Builder Champion. Bodybuilder Shanti Mitchell showed his bodybuilding poses. “It didn’t make sense that a Gym is a prime location in Meyersdal with 400 members could not be a sustainable proposition,” said Mike Maree, one of the investors. Shanti Mitchell posing Premium Fitness
