Monica’s

musings The Great Alberton Boulevard

During the early 1990s, Voortrekker Street - between Redruth and Du Plessis Streets - was turned into the Alberton Boulevard. The concepts, designs and features of the Boulevard were developed after a comprehensive examination of shopping mall developments in Europe and the United States in order to combine the features of the best overseas malls with some unique innovations. The investigative team from the Council was led by Johann van der Merwe, but initial concepts to enclose the entire area were rejected as the result of that study. Construction started in May 1991 after the contract was awarded to CA Brand Civil Engineering Works. The project was termed a semi-mall. At the time a semi-mall was described as one in which “limited access for cars (and other types of transport) is combined with a more pleasant and comfortable pedestrian environment in order to improve trading performance and

enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area.” The idea was to transform the area into a “tree-lined union of all the shops on both the eastern and western sides of Voortrekker Road and Alberton City,” the latter having been built in 1986. The large integrated shopping environment would provide for improved pedestrian facilities, re-paved and widened sidewalks, convenient pedestrian crossings, seating and a covered crosswalk. Planters containing trees and shrubbery were to be added. In the event, eleven trees were planted, and the Arizona Ash was chosen as the most adequate tree for the purpose of decoration. The tree grows up to 10 metres high and can withstand hot, dry conditions as well as cold weather. The Boulevard was also designed with a water stage, surrounded by a pleasantly designed moat for marketing and promotional events (since removed), a circular colonnade

for static or moving displays and promotions, as well as a children’s square at the southern end (which did not materialize). The Boulevard was to be balanced by the Alberton Lake development, a large manmade lake and pleasure resort on the other side of Alberton City, embracing the Natal Spruit. Those plans were eventually shelved. For information on the Alberton Heritage Society, please call 011 869 9417 (BeverleyAnn Small) or the writers of these articles at 083 380 4072. {A note from the Editor}

“There is only one way to learn. It’s through action. Everything you need to know you have learned through your journey.” - Paulo Coelho And so my journey has bought me back to tame TIMES. It is so great to see old and new faces, meet new people and work with creative minds. We had a busy week and we’re happy to bring you a newspaper filled with good news. Alberton Day and Music Festival will be held from 5 to 7 December this year, which is certainly something to look forward to. Have a look at our gourmet feature for ideas when the hunger pangs are taking over and you become hungry. You will also find delicious mocktail recipes to ease the hunger… Hot on everyone’s lips this past week was the arrest of notorious drug dealer ‘’The Lion of Alberton,’’ who will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court tomorrow and Thursday for sentencing. Keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages for the latest updates. Even though a break-in can definitely not be considered ‘’good news,’’ the fact that Fox Security got to Francis-Marie and Darryl Fourie’s home within minutes, aiding the Alberton SAPS in making a successful arrest in under twenty minutes, was great. We want to congratulate the Alberton SAPS for taking such quick action. The VLU Brackenhurst branch turned 30 years old last week. I personally want to thank Anita Liesching and the other ladies for always making tame TIMES feel so welcome - it is a pleasure to hang out with them. It’s good to be back. I’m looking forward to working with the tame TIMES team, as well as the Alberton and Germiston communities. Send your stories to Monica. Supra@tametimes.co.za

Have a great week! Monica

Celebrating Senzo’s life

Wanted by Alberton SAPS

GIVING THE ORLANDO PIRATES SALUTE: Soccer fans celebrated the life of fallen soccer star Senzo Meyiwa at Chris Hani Mall.

Charity Moyo charity@tametimes.co.za As part of celebrating the life of a great soccer star - Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa, who was shot and killed in Vosloorus - tame TIMES Kathorus in partnership with Chris Hani Mall, Kasie FM and Orlando Pirates Vosloorus branch hosted a memorial service. The memorial service, which was held at the Chris Hani Mall parking lot, was attended by supporters of Orlando Pirates and other teams, wearing their respective regalia. They sang songs praising the team and their fallen hero. The lyric that echoed through

the mall building, catching the attention of the crowd and shoppers was “USenzo akalalanga uguqe ngamadolo,” which means that Senzo’s soul is not resting peacefully because it was not taken by God’s will. Several speakers from various stakeholders spoke about how Senzo inspired and motivated them to watch soccer with his acrobatic skills and tactics. The Vosloorus Police Crime Prevention Unit was also part of the event and highlighted the fact that the community has to work with the police to fight crime. Senzo Meyiwa was shot during a house robbery in Mzamo section 28 in Vosloorus on 26 October while visiting his girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo. An identikit of the suspects

was released and police questioned a number of people in connection with the killing of Meyiwa. The suspects were identified as a result of information received from witnesses as well as the public. One suspect, Zenokuhle Mbatha, a 25-yearold Vosloorus resident, was charged on the basis of a positive identification by some of the witnesses and has been remanded in custody. He first appeared at Boksburg Court on 31 October and the case was postponed to give the suspect time to get legal aid. He will reappear on 11 November at Boksburg Magistrate’s Court. Investigations are continuing.

Enige persoon wie graag ʼn skooltassie teen R200 wil borg, kan vir Johan Oliver by 083 457 8009 of olivierjr@telkomsa.net kontak.

Enige persoon wie graag ʼn skooltassie teen R200 wil borg, kan vir Johan Oliver by 083 457 8009 of olivierjr@telkomsa. net kontak.

Fantastic Freddie

I am a parent at Kenton Primary School and we have a security guard named Freddie who is beyond unbelievable. He looks after the kids in the afternoon when the parents have not arrived on time. He knows every child by name and who the kids must go home with. Besides his duties, he is just a great guy who is kind and gentle. He is so respectful towards everyone. Freddie is amazing and as a parent I am grateful to him for looking out for my kids.

Getting into the swing of things

Gysie is skoonveld.

Summer is officially here and few things are as great as a lazy summer evening in perfect South African weather. Staying indoors is simply a waste. We have compiled a list of local restaurants for you to explore. In the mood for a cocktail? News Café is your answer. They offer a massive cocktail menu with everything from the classics such as Martini’s, Cosmopolitans and Sex on the Beach to interesting drinks like the Pangalactic Gargle Blaster. You don’t have to stress about going home hungry. News Café offers a wide variety of delicious food. A definite must-have is the Jozi Fillet from Mike’s Kitchen. Prime fillet topped with creamy blue cheese and bacon, finished off with sweet black cherries, is the perfect meal for meat lovers with a taste for something more adventurous. For the real adventurous diners out there, The Mad Platter recently opened in The Lemon Tree Shopping Centre. You can try exotic dishes like Duck in Plum Sauce, Crocodile or Mopani Worms. They boast a large dessert selection, and more than 130 dishes. Adega is an old favourite and one of the first suggestions when someone is in the mood for sushi. For fantastic prawns, LM Chicken prepared to perfection and Portuguese dishes, Adega is a must. And for those who really want to stay in, but don’t feel like cooking, there is the convenience of Adega Express. You can order your food to go, but if you’re feeling extremely lazy and don’t live too far, you can have your delicious chicken and veggies delivered right to your doorstep.

A The whole appeal of a cocktail is in its stellar explosion appearance. It is the “eye candy” factor that of Smirnoff Spin, separates the popular cocktails from the Butlers strawberry rest, says Stanley Nyoni, liqueur and fresh manager of News Café, Bedfordview. strawberries He said it was for this reason that the Pangalactic Gargle Blaster (R55), with its zany red, yellow and blue stripes and tropical umbrella and cherry detail, was one of the restaurant’s bestsellers. Another drink unique to News Café is the Strawberry Supernova (R50, see inset), which is described as: “a stellar explosion of Smirnoff Spin, Butlers strawberry liqueur and fresh strawberries.”

Theatre message about engineering Teaformance is a non-profit organization that uses theatre to bring messages to children and teens to help them with the daily challenges they may face. On Friday 31 October the Teaformance team, together with technology company ABB, visited Parklands High School to promote engineering as a field of study. They also brought a message of community upliftment and dramatised some of the opportunities available to young people when they leave school. ABB did demonstrations for the Grade 10 and 11 learners about the engineering options and Teaformance put on a theatre piece to inform learners about gender equality, abuse and options after school.

“The idea is still common that a woman’s personal life and family, in terms of having children, will affect her work performance. The reverse is also true where it is perceived that the demands of work will affect a woman’s family life,” says Lyndy Van Den Barselaar, managing director of Manpower Group South Africa. It is true that it is often harder for women, and especially single mothers, to hold down two “jobs” but there is no reason for this to detract

from her performance in either. The past 20 years of democracy in South Africa have seen significant measures made to ensure that gender equality has become a societal reality. However, a closer analysis of South Africa’s score in the area of economic participation and opportunity reveals disparities regarding gender equality. There still appears to be a substantial gap between men and women in labour participation, remuneration and advancement.

The HumAN ScienceS Research CounciL (HSRC) recommends the following interventions to create balance in this situation: - A key role in building women’s capacity is good quality education that encourages independent critical thought, fosters self-confidence and provides young girls with a vision for their future. - Address discriminatory practices in recruitment and pay equity, facilitated through the proper enactment of laws against discrimination. - Career breaks impact negatively on women’s leadership aspirations. Therefore, measures should be instituted to eliminate the adverse impact of career breaks through well-paid leave and right of return to posts. - The provision of family-friendly work environments, such as the provision of crèches at work for nursing mothers and flexible work schedules would go a long way to keeping more women at work. - More rigorous public campaigns to challenge gender stereotypes and the establishment of programmes to increase fathers’ parenting roles are needed. - Women need to be legally literate to ensure the proper implementation of legislation against discrimination. - In view of the difficulty women have in entering leadership positions, alliance building and women’s organizations can assist them to enter such positions, particularly in government and parastatal organizations. Organizations whose members often comprise women activists have been successful in campaigning for the appointment of women to key positions. - Lastly, the implementation of affirmative action is especially important in helping to redress an imbalance of men and women at senior levels. Continuing discrimination and internalised ideas about male and female roles hamper women leaders-in-waiting and prevent their full participation in leadership. Protect your staff during a robbery

During a robbery, employees should remember the following: Stay calm. Resistance could provoke the attackers into becoming aggressive, which could only result in tragedy; Follow the perpetrators’ instructions to the letter. It is human nature for people to volunteer to do more than has been asked of them, just to get the ordeal over with as quickly as possible. Robbers, however, often interpret such behaviour as a trap, causing them to panic; Should your employees need to move around in response to the attackers’ instructions, they must vocalize every action while keeping their hands in open sight. If they tell the robbers exactly what they are about to do, the robbers will not think they are being unco-operative; Stay alert. Mentally recording everything you can about the robbers – their races, ages, clothing, eye colour or distinct features such as tattoos and piercings, as well as everything they touch (should they not be wearing gloves), will help to catch the perpetrators after the event;

The robbery of a business can leave employees traumatised, injured or, in the worst-case scenario, dead. “Injuries or death during an attack are a business-owner’s worst nightmare,” Grant Dunnington, CEO of SBV Services said. “By their very nature, robberies are terrifying and unpredictable and, while no one knows exactly what will happen when violence is aimed at your business, it’s crucial that your employees are empowered to reduce the chances of people being killed. Beyond cash management solutions, at SBV Services

we believe in protecting human life and strive to empower the business community with knowledge about how to save lives when under attack.” Preparing your employees for a robbery sounds easier said than done, but it is possible. The first step is to ensure that all employees have been taught how to use all of the security features at a business’s premises. While this is done as a preventative measure, it is imperative that the training does not create a sense of unease or panic.

11 November 2014

When the robbers are about to leave or are leaving, do not look them in the eye or try to run after them; As soon as they leave, ensure that everyone at the premises is safe; go into a secure location or lock up the premises to call the police – just in case the robbers come back; Ask everyone who witnessed the incident to stay put until the police arrive and have taken statements; While waiting for the police, leave the crime scene exactly as it was left by the robbers.

Schoeman and Steyn retain 5150 African Championship titles Henri Schoeman (RSA) underlined his status as one of South Africa’s most promising triathletes by putting in a dominant performance to win his second consecutive Ekurhuleni 5150 African Championship title, leading from start to finish. Schoeman was in imperious form, putting on a display worthy of a 5150 African Champion. As predicted, it was Schoeman who exited the water first in only 13 minutes and 39 seconds, more than 6 minutes ahead of his closest competitor. Schoeman’s early lead meant that he could control his own race and keep to his race strategy, although he would have no place for complacency with the talent in the chasing pack. Despite losing a fraction of time on the bike, his effort was enough to put him into T2 with a 4-minute lead. Schoeman started the 10km with a decent time cushion and looked strong on the run throughout. Never in any danger of being caught after his exceptional swim had set his race up well, he maintained his 4-minute lead to finish first in a time of 01:47:03. Andrea Steyn (RSA) put her injury woes behind her to show just how good she is by successfully defending her title in a highly competitive field. Over the past two years Andrea Steyn obliterated almost everything in her path before a bike injury halted her progress in 2014. Steyn would naturally be the favourite when she races; but after a long layoff, coupled with one of the strongest women’s fields assembled in South Africa, a win would be hard earned. It was Lucie Reed (RSA) who exited the water first, just one second ahead of Commonwealth star Kate Roberts. Steyn exited the water fourth. A close battle emerged between Roberts and Reed, with the latter managing to get slightly ahead approaching T2. Reed entered T2 first with Roberts only 40 seconds behind. Steyn was impressive on the bike, passing Prinsloo and making up the three-minute deficit on Grenfell to enter T2 in third, only 20 seconds behind Roberts to make it a close contest between the leading three.

Schoeman crossing the finish line with a time of 1:47:04 Steyn crossing the finish line with a time of 2:05:10 With Reed leading the run, a dramatic few moments saw the lead change hands between the three athletes. Roberts passed Reed, with Steyn all the while approaching from behind. Roberts’s lead was short-lived, however, as Steyn passed both Reed and Roberts to take the lead. The rhythm

and momentum she gained meant that it would take a big effort from Roberts and Reed to catch her. Steyn eventually finished with a time of 02:05:10 - nearly a minute ahead of the second-placed Roberts.
