Giving back to the community This was all made possible by the support of tame TIMES readers, as tame TIMES had been calling on the community for a month for donations of soup mix, bread, blankets, old clothes, shoes and cash.
LOVING HER WARM BLANKET: A child from Glenesk eats an apple while enjoying the warmth of her new blanket.
Laurelle Williams laurelle@tametimes.co.za When tame TIMES staff and Hope in Jesus Ministries members pulled up to the park in Glenesk on Saturday, long lines of both children and adults had already formed in anticipation of their visit. While the organisers of the event set up tables and soup-pots, warm hugs and friendly greetings were exchanged; then everyone joined hands to make a large circle, and prayed before the meal was served. A cup of hot soup, bread, fruit, biscuits and packets of chips were given to each member of the Glenesk community. This was all made possible by the support of tame TIMES readers, as tame TIMES had been calling on the community for a month for donations of soup mix, bread, blankets, old clothes, shoes and cash. We are very grateful to our readers, who stood together and made it possible for tame TIMES to collect two bakkie-loads of goods with which to bless two communities: Glenesk and South Hills. tame TIMES would also like to commend Hope in Jesus Ministries for doing the work of God and being obedient to His command to help the poor. Members of this church feed the less fortunate every day, and do it with the love of Jesus, wanting not only to fill empty stomachs but also to fill hearts with the Good News and make fishers of men. Brackendowns Victim Support Unit reaches out
15 July 2014
A Note from the
I think with our everyday life being so busy, we sometimes forget how short life can be. tame TIMES would like to extend our condolences to the families of Jenny O’Friel (on page 2) and Trevor Thompson (on page 6) who passed away last week. We will keep you in our prayers and trust that God will lead you through this difficult time. This past weekend tame TIMES also visited the community in Glenesk for our Winter Challenge outreach, and handed out soup, blankets, clothes and shoes to children and adults. Read more on page 1 and 3. I do hope you enjoy this issue and please send any news or requests that you may have to stephanie.conradie@tametimes.co.za Blessings
In memory of Jennifer Ann O’Friel HEART-WARMING: Cassandra Stark and Elsie van der Merwe (both in orange) with the loving children of St Mary’s Home.
One little boy walked behind the people carrying packets of clothing and household utensils, singing songs to them very loudly. Earlier this year the members of Brackendowns Victim Support Unit started collecting clothing and household utensils in preparation for the winter cold. In honour of the memory of Denise Palmer, one of the unit’s members, they chose St Mary’s Children’s Home as their charity of choice and organized an outreach visit to them earlier this month. The residents of St Mary’s Children’s Home were very excited when the unit arrived. One little boy walked behind the visitors carrying packets of clothing and household utensils, singing songs to them very loudly. He felt this was the best way to show his appreciation of the gifts.
Being part of the event was truly heartwarming. The children had prepared a recital of songs and speeches and gave an extremely touching presentation to the Brackendowns Victim Support Unit. The Brackendowns Victim Support Unit would sincerely like to thank all the members of the public for assisting them with donations. Capt Bohler is especially grateful to a certaina family living in Glenvista which donated very kindly to the organisation. For trauma counselling in the area you are welcome to phone Capt Bohler on 0829677986
It is with deepest regret that the O’Friel family announced the passing of their Matriarch, Jenny O’Friel - Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, friend and loved one to so many. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her and were touched by her life and her love. Jenny will be forever in the hearts of her 5 children, Robert, Yvonne, Cheryl, Garth and Patrick, her 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Jenny will be sadly missed by all her coworkers and 60 staff. A memorial service will be held on Thursday 17 July 2014 at the Alberton Methodist Church (Heidelberg Service Road) at 11:00.
tame TIMES would like to extend our condolences to Jenny’s family and friends.

LINE-UP: The children of Glenesk stood in orderly lines for their food. This outreach could not have happened without the help of Hope in Jesus Ministries, which allowed tame TIMES to partner with them on their feeding scheme outreach in these areas. Special guests at the event, who made the day an especially memorable one, were Johan Herbst, a 2014 Mr SA finalist, and the JOY dogs and their owner, Sue Green. Although the Glenesk children were rather apprehensive of the dogs at first, by the end

of the morning a number of brave boys and one little girl had plucked up the courage to touch them, and showered the animals with love. tame TIMES staff were humbled to hear parents thank them for helping them to feed their children and to see the smiles on the little ones’ faces as they received such previously unheard-of luxuries as biscuits; but there were also some heart-breaking moments. One barefoot little boy came
running up to the box of clothing to ask for a pair of socks and a young girl came to us to plead for a scarf. Lisa Katzke, tame TIMES PRO officer would like to thank everyone who contributed in the form of food, clothing or cash donations, as well as those who gave their time. You made it possible to bless those who are less fortunate. See more photos on our Facebook page.

techniques, design and CAD at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), while completing his Master’s degree. The 25-year-old is passionate about contemporary jewellery that also functions as art and believes in the dual functionality of jewellery as artwork as well as adornment. When asked what inspires him, he said: “I’m someone who wants to try new things, especially things that aren’t popular. I would say my inspiration comes from the drive of attempting something new and actually pulling it off. People – whether locally or internationally based, who are on the top of their game in whatever field – inspire me so I can strive to be on top of my game in my industry.”
DETERMINED: Degrecia Zwane is living her dream of being part of the Miss Earth Programme. 27-year-old environmental consultant Degrecia Zwane from Brackenhurst is making our town proud as a Miss Earth South Africa National Semi-Finalist. “Looking through features of past finalists when I was younger, I always inspired to enter the Miss Earth Leadership Programme myself and be that example for younger people,” Degrecia said. Degrecia recently hosted a project at La Rochelle Primary School in which she planted trees and showed the pupils how to run a recycling programme. She also hosted an energy workshop at Rosettenville Central Primary, where the learners made a pledge to the ‘Switch’ mascot to remember to switch off unnecessary appliances in their homes at all times. When we asked her what motivates her she answered: “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Degrecia and her family also separate and recycle glass, plastic and paper goods at their home in Brackenhurst. We wish Degrecia all the best for the Miss Earth Finals later in July. To get involved in the Miss Earth Programme, contact them on 011 680 6650 or email greenyourmind@missearthsa. co.za

Get ready for tax season The 2014 tax season started on 1 July and will end on 21 November. During this time you will need to submit your income tax return to the South African Revenue Service (SARS) to avoid any unforeseen penalties and interest. If you earned an income greater than R250 000 for the tax year (i.e. from 1 March 2013 to 28 February 2014) you are required to submit a completed and signed income tax return to SARS. However, this is not applicable if: you earned under R250 000 for the full tax year from one employer (that is your total salary income before tax); you have no other sources of additional income (e.g. interest or rental income); and you have no deductions that you want to claim (e.g. medical expenses, travel or retirement annuities). For some - especially business owners filing a tax return can be a stressful and
daunting task which involves a great deal of paperwork and takes more time and effort than expected. Yet those who are clued-up and tax-savvy are well aware that this is not always the case. According to Johan Swart, Tax Manager at Legal & Tax, “If you do file early, early returns are usually processed fast. That means you’ll get your money quickly if you’re owed a refund from SARS. And, if you have underestimated your tax contribution, you may be able to save substantially on interest payable if you do submit early.” “It’s also important not to miss the 21 November deadline because SARS will charge you non-compliance penalties for each month that your return is outstanding. If you do not submit your income tax return and pay your penalty, SARS may deduct the penalty from your salary/income or bank account,” Swart said.
There are also various ways to submit your income tax return: Submit your submission online via eFiling or via your mobile device using the SARS app. Submit your return manually by going into a SARS branch and requesting assistance
from a SARS consultant. Post your submission to SARS. Place your submission in the drop box at a SARS branch.
However, the easiest and most efficient way is directly via eFiling or the SARS app. Swart’s four tips to make filing season easy: Collate and prepare all your supporting documents. These include your IRP5 tax certificate from your employer, tax certificates from your medical aid scheme and retirement annuity fund, receipts of medical expenses not covered by your medical aid scheme, and your car travel logbook. Never lie about your income or inflate your expenses. The penalties for false declarations on tax returns are steep and you could be caught out. Get help from a professional tax consultant
at Legal and Tax to ensure you do your return correctly the first time. Legal and Tax’s consultants may also be able to help you find legal ways to reduce the amount of tax that you pay each year. When you file, check that the information SARS has already filled in on your return form is correct. You can fix any information that is wrong or out of date, but SARS may ask you to submit supporting documentation to explain your changes.
donating blood 2014 is particularly symbolic as we strive to keep the legacy of this great statesman alive and make every day a Mandela Day. The message is simple for Mandela Month – that each individual has the ability and responsibility to impact positive change every day. In support of this, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS)
is calling on all South Africans to make a difference by donating blood. Blood donation is one of the simplest ways to make a difference to the lives of others and it is something you can continue to do every 56 days, a sustainable action to make a difference to the lives of others.
To become a blood donor you must be: - Lead a sexually safe lifestyle - Be healthy on the day of donation
- Between the ages of 16-65 years old - Weigh more than 50kg - Have eaten a good meal before donating

Truth Serum:
Fear in sales does not exist By Debbie Hanekom
If you get rejected, you can tell yourself that it is not your fault but that the company’s price is high, that the economy or market is not right for what you are selling or that the product has not been marketed correctly. The myth is that people fear to call because they fear rejection, but the truth is we all use fear of rejection as an excuse for not making that appointment we need. The truth is that you are unprepared and you have not covered the ground work, you are procrastinating, what is needed is for you to take action and to stop making excuses. Blaming the economy, the product packaging and your boss, is only a smoke screen for what you are not doing. There is a workable recipe for sales that has, and always will, work; but if you keep using the same pattern of doing things every day, you will get the same results that you have always had. If you are not selling, it is because you are not making the calls, you are not setting up the appointments, you are not getting in front of the customer, and you are not getting the sale. If you would like to change this behaviour you can start today: Use the 10 minute rule: If you have a task that seems huge, use 10 minutes to break it down into small pieces. For example, if you have a target of R5000 to sell a coffee mug of R70 and your average quote is for a set of 12, that would total R840, and you would need just 6 quotes. If
you have a month to accomplish the target, breaking this down into small pieces makes it not only seem very possible, but almost too easy. Ultimate goal vs your immediate desire If your ultimate goal is to do 10 appointments a week and your immediate desire is to go out with a colleague to lunch, going on a lunch date seems very appealing, and normally you would just go. Change this behaviour by telling yourself that you have only this one opportunity to see this particular person and that this could be the big deal that you have been waiting for. Rather use your lunch date for a celebration after the deal has been closed. For more secrets on mastering sales, look out for my next article. www.unstoppableme.co.za debbie@unstoppableme.co.za

Rest in peace Trevor
tame TIMES suffered a great loss last week Monday when Trevor Thompson (63), one of our distribution drivers, passed away from heart failure. Trevor had been distributing tame TIMES newspapers for four and a half years. The areas he covered were Brackendowns, Brackenhurst and Albertsdal. Trevor was known not only for his great efforts to make sure every resident in his areas received their weekly copy of tame TIMES, but he would also contribute articles. He loved colourful and expressive words and would always find the interesting in the mundane. tame TIMES will surely miss Trevor and his jolly personality and sends his wife Elsie and his family their deepest condolences. We also thank Trevor for his dedication to tame TIMES.
SORELY MISSED: Trevor Thompson. Trevor leaves behind four children, Gert, Wayne, Quintin and Michelle; grandchild Bianca and great-grandchild Saige.
Celebrating Plaster Day Junior Colleges Castillian recently held a Plaster Day in aid of The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. “It’s never too young to be introduced to the world of caring, thus, together, we took action to raise funds for The Red Cross Hospital”, says Trudie Gilmore principal for Junior Colleges Castillian. Plaster Day is aimed at rising much needed funding for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and to showcase the amazing work they do. Teachers, parents and students opened
their hearts and donated between R1 to R10 towards the project. Each student received a sticker to wear for that day, to showcase their support. The amount of R1770 raised by Junior Colleges Castillian will assist with the upgrade of the Parents Accommodation at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. “There is more to healing children than medication and treatment, more often, a mother’s touch is just what the doctor ordered,” says Ronnis Daniels, Publicity Manager at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.
PLASTER DAY: The little ones at Junior Colleges Castillian show their support for The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.
Golf day in aid of Alberton Child Welfare Alberton Child Welfare has been in operation since 1940, serving children and families who are vulnerable and at risk. By supporting their Charity Golf Day to be held at Glenvista Country Club on Wednesday August 6, you can make a difference in their daily struggle to keep their heads above water and keep providing for the vulnerable. The organization needs funds to cover basic operating costs and for food, transport and clothing for the children In Matteus 13 is die gelykenis van die saaier opgeteken.
in their children’s home. The golf day is being organized by Home Talk Developments and Rawson Properties. To book a fourball or sponsor a hole, kindly contact Lizanne Booysen on 082 446 6727. “Deursoek my, o God, en ken my hart; toets my en ken my onrustige gemoed. Kyk of daar enige sondige neiging by my is, en lei my op die ewige pad.” Psalm 139:23-24

Safety tips for domestic workers Domestic workers are often targeted when they are alone in your home during the day. These simple tips from the SAPS will ensure their safety: Know the SAPS Emergency numbers Do not open the door for strangers. Do not allow any person on the premises without prior arrangement of the home-owner. Never tell strangers that you are home alone. When attending to a stranger at the gate, make sure that there is enough distance between you and that person. Always keep the doors locked, even when you go outside to hang washing or put out the dustbin. Always have your cellphone with you but make sure it is concealed.
Never give the home-owners’ cellphone number to any person asking for it. Do not allow people from the street to come on to the premises to drink water or eat food. Carry a whistle around your neck and blow it very hard in case of an emergency. Know how to activate the alarm and use the panic buttons, but always hide yourself when doing so. Look out for suspicious vehicles and write down their registration numbers. When anybody says they have to come and fix
something, contact the SAPS immediately and do not open any doors or gates for them. If a person claims to be a police officer, request to see his/her police ID card. Always be on the lookout for suspicious vehicle and persons at your neighbours, across the street and next door. Know the domestic worker next door for the sake of a quick response in the case of an emergency. Supplied by the Alberton SAPS

Standing out
Waiter – or waiting? Your waiter should do just that, not you. The waiter’s job is to make you comfortable, take your order – after explaining the menu if necessary – and bring your food without fuss. When you have finished, the waiter should clear away unobtrusively.
from the
crowd
How about some wine with that?
What are the other factors that make a restaurant stand out from the competition?
A good restaurant will have a variety of wines available at both ends of the price-scale. There is as much skill involved in having a good selection of cheaper wines as those in the higher ranges. Making wine available by the glass – and not just offering a house red or white – is a bonus.
We all love eating out and being treated to delicious meals that we would never get at home, but what makes a restaurant a good restaurant? Obviously the food has to be good – there is no doubt about that, but what are the other factors that make a restaurant stand out from the competition?
First impressions The moment you step in the door, the restaurant begins to make an impression on you. Can you see the tables or is it dark and gloomy? Food always seems to be more enjoyable if you have natural lighting.
How is the menu? Menus are there so that you can make choices, so they should contain a good variety of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. Add good soup and a decent cheese board and you have a well laid-out menu that does not need a language degree to decipher.
Win!
Empty wallet
Local food
Fresh ingredients make a huge difference to what finally appears on your table, and what better way is there to ensure this than using local produce? Why bring in frozen salmon from Scotland when there is a good supply locally? Bringing in food from exotic places does not necessarily make it better. Also, there is nothing to beat the quality of some foods prepared in-house. Freshly baked bread, sauces and pasta made from scratch, instead of store-bought stuff, make a world of difference.
Obviously you do not want to break the bank for a meal, but you should feel you received value for money from your restaurant experience. A good restaurant lives or dies not just on the quality of food, but also on the quality of service and should not impose a service charge. If you feel you have received excellent service, then by all means reward your waiter, but this should be your choice to make.
Too much or not enough
Your food is supposed to be a culinary delight, not a challenge. Some restaurants try to impress with tiny, prettily dressed portions looking lost and forlorn amidst vast expanses of white plate. Others go to the opposite extreme and fill as much as they can on the plate, regardless of the taste conflicts between masses of ingredients. The Swedes have a word – lagom – that means just right. That is how your plate should look.

New bike route for Ekurhuleni triathlon The Ekurhuleni 5150 African Championship is back, with a new bike route. Entries are now open and Germiston Lake will once again be the setting for Gauteng’s biggest triathlon with the action taking place on Sunday 2 November 2014. The flagship race of the 5150 African Triathlon Series drew a field of 1300 individuals and 25 teams in its inaugural year and looks set to be even better this year with the introduction of the new bike route. The out-and-back route will take the athletes along the N17 as part of the 40km bike leg. The bike course leaves the main entrance out of Germiston Lake Park into Lake Road heading in the direction of the N17 before taking the on-ramp to join the N17. Staying in the inner lane of the N17, athletes will make a U-turn at the Dal Park Toll Plaza and remain on the inner lane up to the Wits Rifles Toll Plaza, where they will make a second U-turn. They will then exit the N17 and back-track to Germiston Lake Park. The N17 will have restricted road use and only two cross-over points, making it ideal for the cyclists. Being a standard distance triathlon, the race will consist of a 1.5km swim in Germiston Lake, followed by a 40km bikeride and a 10km run. The Ekurhuleni 5150 African Championship is the perfect way to test the waters if you are new to triathlon, but also a good test of your athletic abilities if you already have a few under your belt. Germany are the champions Ndu Ngwenya ndu@tametimes.co.za There was little between the two teams for 113 minutes until German substitute Mario Goetze struck the death blow, stamping Germany's authority on the game by beating yet another South American World Cup favourite. Goetze's goal came from a well-struck volley after receiving a pin- point accurate cross by Andre Schurrle. The match's only goal came late in extra time after the sides played a goalless, yet exciting 90 minutes. Argentina, which had scored 12 goals in the 2014 Brazil World Cup prior to the final encounter, had their share of opportunities, including a disallowed goal in the first half. Moments before having his goal disallowed for being off-side, Gonzalo Higuain missed a clear-cut chance - this was not to be Argentina’s last missed opportunity, as
Rodrego Palacio shot wide, failing to beat the German goalkeeper. At the end of the game Argentina had a total of 2 shots on target and 8 off target. The loss to Germany in the final also denied Lionel Messi - who also missed on two occasions - an opportunity to win a World Cup. The now four-time world champions, who were fresh off the back of an historic 7 - 1 victory against Brazil, also had a total of 10 shots at goal with only three missing the target. Although the Germans could not repeat their semi-final performance (in terms of goals and total dominance) their ball possession statistic (60%) testifies to the superiority of their “total football” style of play, in which having the best individual player does not matter more than having the best functioning team.
