Doing Alberton proud Marco Kotze made his Vodacom Super Rugby debut for the Reds against the Brumbies in Canberra on Friday 13 February. Originally from Alberton, Marco started his school career at Laerskool Randhart, and finished High School at Marais Viljoen. His grandfather, Stan Almendro, has been his mentor since he was a little boy and Friday was a very proud moment for the entire family, especially Stan and his wife June. Marco climbed to the top against

all odds. Even last week it was still touch and go due to a visa problem, which was only resolved last Wednesday – a mere two days before his debut. According to Stan the greatest thing about Marco is his quality of character and spirit. As a leader, he brings something into a space and room when he enters. ‘’Besides his great stride in sport, Marco has a heart for people and would give his shirt off his back,’’ says Stan. The lock represented the Golden

Lions and Sharks at age-group and Vodacom Cup levels in the past. He then joined the Valke before moving to Australia two years ago, when Jake White took him to the Brumbies. The 28-year-old featured heavily in Brisbane City’s victorious 2014 National Rugby Championship campaign, which saw him called up to the Reds squad. tame TIMES and the Alberton community is proud of Marco’s achievements and wish him all the best for his rugby career.

NOT A DIGNIFIED OCCASION: Chaos erupts at the State Of The Nation Address. As many people predicted, President Jacob Zuma did not touch some of the most talked about, delicate issues during his State of the Nation Address on Thursday 12 February. Issues such as e-tolls, Nkandla, the South African Government Student Loan and Bursary Scheme (NSFAS), as well as the South African Post Office, were not mentioned during his speech.

The blatant disruption of the SONA 2015 by EFF and the commotion following this caused South Africa to be one of the biggest trending subjects on numerous social networks. Shortly after taking the podium, President Zuma was interrupted by a member of the Economic Freedom Fighters demanding to know when he would pay back government funds inappropriately used to upgrade his personal residence.

When EFF leader Julius Malema insisted that he had the right to be heard, the Speaker of the House called security forces to evict all members of the party from the chambers. A few minutes later, all 89 of the official opposition, the Democratic Alliance (DA) walked out of the chambers, leaving only the remaining members of the ANC and other opposition parties behind.

WHAT PRESIDENT ZUMA ACTUALLY SAID: South Africa’s economy needs a major push forward. The country’s aim of achieving a growth target of five percent in 2019 was at risk. The International Monetary Fund had revised

down its global economic growth forecast to 3.5% for 2015. On his target of six million job opportunities over five years, he said so far 850,000 opportunities had been created. The government had a nine-point plan to

ignite growth and create jobs. Foreigners will not be allowed to own land in South Africa. They will instead be eligible for long-term leases. Stabilising Eskom’s finances is a priority and the power utility will be given R23 billion to do so.

THE AFTERMATH: Over the course of the weekend, South Africa reflected on the ugly scenes that unfolded on Thursday evening. tame TIMES readers also had their say: Alta McMaster: ‘’Our government is a total embarrassment. What a joke! I could not believe how everything unfolded from State of the Nation to Chaos in Parliament!’’ Letitia Nel: ‘’Was very interesting, but after the DA left, it got a bit boring. I wonder how many people actually stayed awake.’’ Prince Nhlapo: ‘’It’s actually interesting to see the rules of parliament being tested…’’ Barry du Toit: ‘’A picture paints a thousand words. The state of the nation is CHAOS.’’ Nivan Naidoo: ‘’It’s a joke!’’

Guarding the community For the past few weeks New Redruth has experienced an increase in housebreakings during the early hours of the morning. At approximately 1:30 on Friday 6 February, two males were spotted in Camborne Road by a resident in the New Redruth area. CPS vehicles were sent out to investigate, but the suspects had begun jumping over walls after being spotted. A search was initiated by the CPS Tactical Team with the help of CPF members. At approximately 4:00 one of the suspects was arrested by the Tactical Team. The suspect was found in possession of housebreaking implements, as well as two knives. Later that same afternoon, a member of the Community Police Forum in New Redruth HE SUSPECTS HAD BEGUN JUMPING on a routine patrol spotted a suspiciousOVER WALLS AFTER BEING SPOTTED looking vehicle and saw them lift the gate of a complex. He phoned CPS Security and they dispatched one of their tactical units. When the suspects saw the CPS vehicle, they tried to drive away; however, CPS managed to block the vehicle. Three suspects jumped out of the red Polo and tried to escape. They were all apprehended by the tactical team. Apparently the suspects rang the doorbell of one of the units and when the owner came to the door, asked for a gentleman named Kurt. A pick that was used to force the gate open was found in the boot of the Polo, as well as bolt cutters and screwdrivers. The three suspects are from Eldorado Park and the Polo had no registration plate at the back of the vehicle. Well done to everyone involved. Reflecting on safety Struggling to find a place can be one of the biggest frustrations in life. Struggling at night is not only frustrating, but is also becoming more dangerous. Morné Vermaak developed the perfect solution: white blocks reflecting the number of your house which can be mounted on the pavement or wall, making your number easy to see. The product is mounted using granite glue, which makes it extremely difficult for thieves or vandals to remove. It also has no scrap value, which makes the temptation to steal much less attractive.

The reflection on the blocks is designed so it will not disturb drivers on the road. It is easy to spot, giving you peace of mind when you need emergency services and security companies to find your home without struggle. Morné Vermaak has also developed parking blocks, which are a flatter version of the reflecting blocks, without the reflecting numbers. They are used to allocate parking spaces and are made from the same strong material that will not be damaged when cars drive over them

For patients who present later, after the first trimester, we utilise second trimester screening, which is a combination of blood tests done between 16 and 20 weeks, albeit with a slightly lower sensitivity. Mothers whose foetal screening is positive are appropriately counselled and options are discussed. Mothers-to-be are also able to benefit from the great medical advancements that have taken place in recent years. The revolution in u l t r a s o n o g r a p h y, particularly in new generation ultrasound machines with their high resolution resulting in better quality images, has made early diagnosis of pregnancy easier and more accurate. This makes it possible for the mom-to-be to begin taking the steps that will help her to manage the pregnancy early on. It also allows her even more time to prepare for the birth. Ultrasound dating of pregnancy in the first trimester is the most accurate means of determining the age of the pregnancy and the estimated date of delivery or due date. It is also employed in screening for abnormalities, and is an essential tool in the performance of Amniocentesis (Amnio). All patients are

Once the third trimester of pregnancy is reached, plans for delivery are discussed and the mothers-to-be are given opportunities to raise their concerns regarding the impending births and issues that may arise. Post-delivery is also addressed. Arrangements for delivery such as hospital bed bookings are made and visits to the maternity wards are arranged by the hospital to familiarise mums-to-be with conditions on the “big day.” Pregnancy and childbirth are the two most important milestones in our evolution and survival, and the care of pregnant women is a top priority in every country as one of the eight Millenium Development Goals which is “to improve maternal health.” This requires our collective effort – the health care system and health workers on the one hand playing their part and community members on the other hand ensuring that pregnant women present for antenatal care early, and are able to access information and proper facilities. taboos in terms of food during pregnancy as long as the food is well prepared. It is important for women to start antenatal care as soon as they are pregnant. This activity is the bedrock of preventive medicine as it affords the opportunity to detect diseases and conditions that may adversely affect the outcome of the pregnancy and to take corrective action to safeguard the health of the mother and baby. It also allows risk stratification into low and high risk so that antenatal care may be tailored appropriately. The first antenatal visit should be as soon as pregnancy is suspected and/or confirmed – this is a crucial visit as it is during this visit that the plan for the pregnancy is laid out and screening for the baby as well as the mother is planned. Important tests include screening for Syphilis, HIV, and Hepatitis, haemoglobin level, blood group and urine tests. Furthermore, initial weight is measured along with blood pressure. Depending on the stage of the pregnancy, various levels of foetal screening is performed. We currently employ first trimester screening which is a combination of ultrasound measurement of nuchal

By Dr AB Oyebajo and Dr LB Seopela For many women the diagnosis or confirmation of pregnancy is a time of mixed emotions – of joy, as well as trepidation and anxiety. Added to this, it is a time filled with questions about what is happening inside their bodies. However, the barrage of sometimes questionable information available today can be more confusing than helpful. As soon as they know they are pregnant, expectant mothers usually start gearing their lives towards a healthy pregnancy by paying attention to the basics such as shifts in nutritional needs, exercising appropriately, taking the right supplements, quitting smoking and drinking and getting enough rest. There are a number of important foundational steps to take during pregnancy; different women have different requirements, right down to the food that they crave. Some women need to eat less than others, some may choose swimming over yoga and some may not be able to stand the taste of things such as onions while others simply crave them. NEWS IN A FLASH

State of the Nation Address 2015 The nation was shocked and appalled at the goings on at the State of the Nation Address 2015 (SONA2015) on Thursday evening. The president had not been on the podium for long when EFF MP Godrich Gardee interrupted his speech to ask when he would pay back the money spent on Nkandla. An obviously prepared Speaker Baleka Mbete quelled this and after numerous EFF MPs raised the same concerns, she asked them to leave. When the MPs did not, things became heated when security personnel were asked to remove the MPs from the chamber and a scuffle ensued. Once calm had been restored, the DA parliamentary spokesperson raised the issue of using the police force to remove MPs. DA MPs were unsatisfied with Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces’ response to the questions of whether the security personnel were SAPS members or not, and staged a walk out of parliament. ACDP MP Kenneth Meshoe, a Boksburg resident, said that he found Zuma’s speech uninspiring and that he expected the president to go into more detail regarding load shedding seeing as that is what people are concerned about. Meshoe also said he almost fell asleep and had to step out for some fresh air to keep himself awake. He added that the president failed to give the nation hope. (ewn.co.za)

Portland, Oregon - Oregon officials are warning early morning joggers and park visitors in the state capital Salem to watch out for an owl which has an affinity for hats after at least four people were attacked in a month. No one was seriously hurt in any of the incidents, but Brad Hilliard, 36, was one of at least two joggers to have lost headgear in a brush with the bird. “It was kind of amazing how it just swooped down and grabbed my hat like that,” Hilliard told Reuters of how he became the acquisitive avian’s latest victim early one morning this week. “It just pulled it right off my head like it was nothing!” Keith Keever, the city’s parks superintendent, said officials had never heard of a case like it before. Intrigue over big screen hit Fifty Shades Of Grey was released last Friday. Here are some interesting facts about the big screen hit, based on a book by author E L James. • It began online as a raunchy fan-fiction version of Twilight. Author E L James decided to tweak the story and take out the vampiric component, so Twilight’s Edward Cullen became the dominant billionaire Christian Grey and Bella Swan transformed into the submissive student Anastasia Steele. • Angelina Jolie is said to have been interested in directing the movie. • The budget for the film was estimated to be around 40million US dollars. • As of February 5, 2.75 million cinema tickets had been pre-sold worldwide. T’Bo Touch hosts Ster-Kinekor Sessions Miguel Abrahams miguel@tametimes.co.za

Going out on a school night is so much more worth it when Ster-Kinekor Sessions brings you the latest preview of The Kingsman: The Secret Service, hosted by popular Metro DJ T’Bo Touch who brought his gentleman swag along for the evening. Interrogation by T’Bo - supported by an array of awesome prizes that any secret agent would die for – soon resulted in everybody betraying the secret service by giving away all its top secret knowledge. Let’s hope the Queen doesn’t find out. Kingsman: The Secret Service staring Colin Firth, Samuel L Jackson and Mark Strong is like James Bond on steroids, filled with overthe-top action sequences. What more could you expect from a secret service film? Colin Firth serves as a veteran secret agent, who is 100% gentleman; but, after losing an

agent, recruits a jobless, pottymouthed middleclass protégé. Everybody loves a fish out of water, and that proves to be the comedic genius of the film, with the new agent finding himself in unfamiliar territory. Samuel L Jackson also brings along the laughs with his eccentric villain persona, along with a lisp, so that no one can take him seriously. This film is pure gold, and a breath of fresh air, far from the grandeur of James Bond, but with much more street. Your next mission is to go and see Kingsman: The Secret Service at your nearest Ster-Kinekor.

Equestrian Inter-schools The first horse-riding Inter-schools qualifier for the Gauteng Sedibeng Region kicked off on 7 and 8 February with a bang at Southerns Equestrian Centre close to Walkerville. With a total of 638 entries over two days, the region’s numbers are improving. Each region hosts four qualifying shows within the first half of the year after which the top eight riders in each individual class qualify to go through to the Gauteng Finals. At the finals, the top riders throughout Gauteng compete for a spot in a team to go to the Nationals. At the Nationals horses and riders travel from all over the country to compete against some of the best for individual glory. Inter-School competitions allow learners to represent their school at the shows and to receive school colours. The Ekurhuleni show is due to take place on 21 and 22 February. Lions blown away

Monica Supra

monica.supra@tametimes.co.za

The Lions kicked off their first Vodacom Super Rugby match for the season on Friday 13 February against the Hurricanes at Emirates Airline Park. The team staggered to a frustrating 22-8 loss against the Hurricanes, despite dominating every aspect of the game. Even at halftime, there was still a belief in the hearts of many supporters that The Lions could bounce back, with the score being 8-11 in favour of The Hurricanes. A year ago, The Lions were introduced back into the competition, to the delight of many fans. What followed was their best ever winning record in the competition, which added salt to the injury and disappointment of the team‘s loyal supporters. Here’s to hoping that the next match against The Sharks on 22 February at Kings Park will restore some faith in the team.

AG NEE: The Lions disappointed with a distressing loss of 22-8 on Friday.
