Alberton Hoër triomfeer PREVENTION: The Fire Department was on the scene to ensure the safety of residents. On 11 June Transnet Pipelines reported theft of petroleum products near an informal settlement outside Alrode, Alberton. The theft resulted in a petroleum spillage, and the Old Vereeniging road was closed down. The Ekurhuleni Disaster Management team alerted residents to the spillage and
its associated risks. Four suspects were arrested and taken to the Brackendowns Police Station. Transnet Pipelines confirmed that repairs to the pipelines are complete and that there is no threat to residents or the water supply in the area. Transnet Pipelines is a pipeline transporting
petroleum and gas products from Durban to Gauteng. “The pipeline is a safe mode of transporting petroleum product, if it is not interfered with,” said Saret Knoetze, PR Manager at Transnet Pipelines. Transnet Pipelines once again appeals to residents to report suspicious activity in the area to their toll-free number, 080 020 3843.

Four centuries of toasting Hoop in aksie
NEWLY ELECTED: The incoming committee that will serve the club from July 2014 to June 2015: Veli Ndaba, Chris Haddon, Thea Haddon, Quinton Losper, Sofia Tasker, Athol Nicol Every day around the world, many cultures celebrate, honour and signify meaningful events with toasts usually involving a libation, heartfelt words and the clinking of glasses. The ancient Greeks drank to each other’s health and welfare. The idea of poison, a potent weapon in the 6th century B.C., quite probably played a role in the toasting tradition. Toasting was a “good faith” gesture to assure others that the drink was not spiked with poison. The best way to prove that a drink was safe was to take the first sip. The clinking of glasses accompanying the toasting tradition began in the 17th century. It is debatable whether the intention of the clinking was to mix the content of each other’s glasses so everyone drank the same grog, lessening the likelihood of being poisoned, or whether the clinking sound added to the experience of taste, touch, smell and sight.
It was in the 17th century that the toastmaster emerged. In those days the role of the toastmaster tended to be referee-like, giving all toasters a fair chance to make their contribution. New Alberton Toastmasters committee elected On the 5th June 2014, Alberton Toastmasters raised and clinked their glasses to celebrate the election of the new committee, the leadership that will guide the club from July 2014 to June 2015. Veli Ndaba was elected as the Chairman, Sofia Tasker re-elected as Vice President of Education, and Quinton Losper, the Vice President of Membership. Thea Haddon will be Sergeant-at-Arms, Chris Haddon will serve as Vice-President of Public Relations, Athol Nicol will manage the cash flow as Treasurer, and Richard Hiscock will be secretary. A Note from the
It seems like just yesterday that South Africa hosted the Soccer World Cup, and now excitement is in the air again with this year’s World Cup in Brazil, which started on 12 June. In our office we also joined in the soccer spirit. World Cup. Even though I have no knowledge of any soccer rules, or teams, I am excited to be an Argentinian supporter for the next month. Join the excitement. Blessings

‘Heritage’ house to be demolished Stephanie Conradie stephanie.conradie@tametimes.co.za
The well-known house in Telawarren Street The beautiful home at 20 Telawarren Street, New Redruth, is known to everyone in the community. According to Beverley-Ann Small from the Alberton Heritage Society, the house is more than 60 years old and falls under the Heritage Protection Act. According to them, it was also the home of the first doctor in Alberton. Unfortunately the house has now been sold and the new owners plan on developing on the stand. Mr Leon Strauss, the developer that bought the property, explained to tame TIMES that
the house is older than 60 years and that they are following the correct process to get approval to develop on the stand. He went on to say that the house has no heritage value apart from its age, because there were certain additions and alterations made to the property previously, which is not the same building style as the original. “We are planning to develop more housing for more families,” he said. “We did not take this decision lightly and we are following the necessary channels to get approval for development,” he concluded.

R27 million Alberton City upgrade finished
17 June 2014
Girl Guides celebrate Father’s Day The Brackenhurst Girl Guides celebrated Father’s Day a week early, on Saturday 7 June, when they enjoyed a fun day with their dads at Bracken Primary’s sportfields. Dads and daughters played volleyball, rounders and indoor games together. “The fun day showed the girls that no matter what age you are, you can still have fun. And it showed the dads that you could still have fun with your children on a Saturday afternoon,” said Renee Chapman from Brackenhurst Girl Guides. Three of the Brownies were also awarded their Silver Hand badges. This is the second highest badge in Brownies, and is obtained by those who have completed their Five Finger badges.
FUN: The girls and dads enjoying a game of volleyball.
The Soweto Marimba Youth League (SMYLe) entertaining the crowd In September 2013 Alberton City Shopping Centre started a R27 million upgrade, and on 10 June they celebrated their new look with a performance by the Soweto Marimba Youth League (SMYLe) that entertained both guests and tenants alike. The upgrade proceeded in two phases. The first phase began at Entrance 5, where a new Jet store opened in December; it also included refurbishment of the common mall area on the upper level and a revamp of the southern parking area formed part of the project’s first phase.
The second phase of the upgrade, which started at the beginning of 2014, focused on the lower level of the mall. It included tiling, painting, ceilings, bulkheads, lighting, balustrades, the relocation of escalators and stairs, new mall furniture, signage and an upgrade of Entrances 2 and 7. “This makeover will give Alberton City a new lease on life,” said Petra Foord, Centre Manager, “We hope to fulfil the client’s needs, because it is most important to serve our clients.”
ACHIEVERS: Renee Chapman (Brownie/Teddie Guider), Joanne van Nierop, Arielle Marinakis, Jemma Heard and Irene Morrick (Guides Guider).
Ekurhuleni Career Expo attracts thousands On 9 and 10 June, the 2014 Ekurhuleni Career Expo took place at the Alberton Civic Centre, and on the first day alone more than 3000 youngsters visited the expo, seeking advice and information on career opportunities. It was the second year that the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has hosted the Expo, which was aimed at exposing graduates, school leavers and young entrepreneurs to various employment opportunities available at companies in and around Ekurhuleni. “We are a municipality that hosts the biggest manufacturing sector in South Africa and can be called the workshop of Africa; we are also home to the continent’s busiest airport - these two elements are very relevant and key to our economic development,” said Executive Mayor Cllr Mondli Gungubele during the official opening of the Expo. “The hosting of this exhibition thus fits
into our strategic vision which involves re-organising and revitalising industry so that our communities can benefit from jobcreating economic growth,” he said. Some of the exhibitors at the two-day expo included South African Airways, SA Express and Mango; Ekurhuleni East and West Colleges, Boston City Campus, Siyafunda CTC and the Peermont Education Trust; engineering, procurement and construction management specialists Deltron Consulting and civil engineering and project management consultancy Epitome Consulting. Various government departments and parastatals were also present to share information on their job creation and entrepreneurship projects, including the Department of Public Enterprises, Department of Public Works, Department of Energy and the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

verstaan waaroor Jeugdag gaan.

Visitors will be able to find the Wheel Well stand on the roof parking near the management offices. The Wheel Well programme was founded by Peggie Mars and is supported by Cartrack,

Who has epilepsy?
Germiston Donor Centre Lambton Court Shopping Centre Corner of Webber & Beacon Road, Lambton Mon Tue / Wed / Fri Thur Sat
Every year National Epilepsy Week is celebrated to raise awareness about epilepsy (a neurological condition characterised by unusual electrical activity in the brain). Even though it is the most common neurological condition in the world, it is still very much misunderstood. This year, National Epilepsy Week will be celebrated from 16 – 22 June. Although South Africa has ratified international treaties, established various policies and guidelines and recognised the right to nondiscrimination on the basis of disability in the Constitution, the rights of people with epilepsy and other disabilities are frequently violated in domestic, community and employment contexts. The saddening fact is that people with epilepsy mostly experience the effects of stigma and discrimination from people that know about their epilepsy and seizures – therefore people close to them. If you didn’t know about a person’s epilepsy you would treat him/her exactly the same as everybody else? This raises the question: Who has epilepsy? Do you really know? The main aim of National Epilepsy Week is to raise awareness about epilepsy to dispel the myths, social stigmas and discrimination attached to the condition. People are considered to have less value to their community and are seen as only dependent on welfare. Together with a sense of vulnerability when it comes to seizures, this view places persons with epilepsy at severe risk. Marina Clarke, National Director of Epilepsy South Africa, said, “National Epilepsy Week focuses on educating the public about the rights of people with epilepsy. We decided on this theme to encourage people to question their own attitudes towards people living with epilepsy.” For more information about Epilepsy South Africa and National Epilepsy Week, contact the organisation on 0860 EPILEPSY (0860 374 537) or visit www.epilepsy.org.za.

Any business can have the best production line in the world, you can have an amazing state-of-the-art web page, but if you are not selling, all of that means nothing. Your success is based on your sales and your sales team. I started selling at the age of 18, many moons ago. I didn’t realize that I was selling at that point in my life, as I have always been a natural people pleaser. So what is sales all about? And who needs to be doing the selling? I have been studying the process of selling for the last 25 years and nothing has changed. Sales is not about your product, it is not about you, it is about your customer. If I asked what you are selling and why anyone would want to buy it, what would your answer be? Life is all about rules, and so is sales. Everyone sells every day, we sell to ourselves first - it takes some convincing to get up when it is absolutely freezing outside and your first job is selling yourself on any given day. We sell to our friends, to our spouses and our bosses. Everyone wants to be liked and accepted so we buy expensive cars, have our nails and hair done and we change to fit into our environments and friendship circles. If this statement does not feel true to you, just imagine being asked to make a speech in the next 10 minutes without preparation. You will experience various symptoms from light headedness, queasiness and sweaty palms because we are not ready to sell. Would you like to be ready to sell at any time? I will be sharing secrets with you that would enable you to not just change your sales, but help you focus on other areas of your life! “BecomeUnstoppable”

The Germiston SAPS Cluster recently embarked on a march through the streets of Alberton with the objective of breaking the silence on domestic violence against women and children. They engaged members of the public on issues relating to women and child abuse, handing out pamphlets, support documents and advice. Although many regard domestic abuse as being limited to physical violence, the Domestic Violence Act also encompasses economic, emotional, sexual and other forms of abuse. The acts, behaviour and consequences of domestic violence vary both in nature and frequency, and the Domestic Violence Act applies to any form of abuse that takes place in a domestic relationship.
Members of the SAPS from the Germiston Cluster took to the streets of Alberton to raise awareness on the abuse of women and children.
What is domestic violence? The following can be regarded as domestic violence: Sexual abuse (whether you are married to the other person or not); Physical abuse or assault (for example, slapping, biting, kicking, and threats of physical violence); Damage to property or anything you value; Stalking (when the other person follows or approaches you or your children repeatedly); Economic abuse, that is, when the other person keeps money to which you are legally entitled from you in an unreasonable manner by Refusing to pay or share the rent or mortgage bond for the Home you share; Disposing of any property (household goods) in which you have interest without your permission; Emotional abuse (that is, degrading or humiliating behaviour, including repeated insults, belittling, cursing and threats); any other controlling or abusive behaviour which poses a threat to your safety, health or well-being.
Commitment of SAPS to victims of domestic violence It is the commitment of the SAPS to treat victims of domestic violence with sensitivity and care. As police officials We will treat victims with respect and protect their dignity; Listen to what victims have to say; Not insult or blame victims or suggest that it was their own fault that they were abused; Assist victims with empathy and care; and Inform victims of their rights and options. Glenbrack High walk against drugs On Saturday 7 June, Glenbrack High School took part in a fun walk against drugs in schools in Brackendowns area. The school principal, Mr Moshitela, would like to thank the community, especially the ones residing around the school, for the support.
HISTORY: The first team made history by advancing to the Ekurhuleni finals. Alberton High School’s netball teams certainly caused a stir in the D16 Medium schools league this year. A total of seven out of the nine teams from Alberton High School advanced to the District play-offs, which were recently held at Hoërskool Oosterlig. The Alberton High U/16B and first teams were crowned District 16 Champions in their respective leagues, beating Hoërskool Oosterlig in both age group finals. In the process, history was made at Alberton High School with the first team advancing on to the Ekuhuruleni finals against Hoërskool Brandwag from Benoni. Unfortunately, to cap off what can only be described as a remarkable achievement “The Blue” (Alberton High) lost 14-15.
Blues beat Bracken Bull Dogs

Nkwenkwe Nkomo, Group Chairman of FCB South Africa, long-term Board member of the ACA, AAA School of Advertising, MAC Charter Council and Advertising Standards Authority Chairperson was presented with an APEX as a token of sincere gratitude and deep appreciation for his indomitable commitment to the South African advertising profession. Nkomo has retired and will always be remembered as the profession’s ‘Champion of Change’ because he was instrumental in putting in place the Marketing, Advertising and Communications Sector. This year, no fewer than 17 bursaries were awarded at the gala event bringing to a total 43 APEX bursaries having been awarded since the launch of the program in 2010. The APEX bursary program affords deserving aspirant, talented students from the AAA School of Advertising – the industry’s official trade school and ‘birthplace of brilliant’- the opportunity to obtain a tertiary qualification as a springboard to their careers in the advertising profession.

Ekurhuleni awaits Spring Fiesta 2014 sees the return of Spring Fiesta with its fourth consecutive installment. Event’s promoters are promising a day of festivities to outweigh its predecessors. Soul Candi announced on Wednesday 11 June that UK House Guru’s, The Layabouts will, once again, be gracing the Spring Fiesta to perform alongside some of South Africa’s hottest, local talent. The Layabouts performance at this year’s festival will be their second performance at the ultimate spring festival following their performance at the 2012 festival. Fans will be pleased to see them once again rocking the stage in Ekurhuleni on Saturday, 4 October. Leigh Darlow & Alex Paschali, the two friends and music-lovers who form The Layabouts are one of the hottest commodities on the scene right now. Their recent radio hit, “Colours of Love”, has been making waves in the music industry and will surely be one to look out for at this year’s Spring Fiesta. After 12 years in the game, they are the height of their career and have never been in such top form or high demand. Having a cast-iron reputation for high-quality productions – their music described as being forged with feeling and real purpose – The Layabouts continue to impress fans across the globe. Spring Fiesta 2014 attendees can look forward to another stellar performance from the international duo alongside their favourite local acts. These artists will be spread across 6 diversified stages with the full line-up being announced throughout June and into July. Adding massive value to the festival-goers this year is the shuttle service of Uber. Uber is an app that connects you to drivers in your city and allows you to order a ride at the tap of a button. This shuttle service will assist greatly in Spring Fiesta’s mission to get all our guests home safely after this massive event. Keep an eye out for the Spring Fiesta Promo Code which will allow you up to R200.00 off your first Uber ride. Tickets for the Spring Fiesta are available from Computicket and are selling fast. Pitbull’s pants steal World Cup 2014 Opening show Ndu Ngwenya
@nduzo twitter.com
Thursday 12 June marked the start of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Acknowledged as the world’s greatest sporting event, the World Cup, currently in its 20th instalment, hosted an opening game which, judging by its more than 600 tweets per minute generated, lived up to this claim. The tournament’s opening game saw Brazil, ranked third in the world, take on Croatia, the 18th ranked in the world; Brazil beat Croatia 3 – 1, much to the excitement of the home crowd at the Sao Paulo. The opening ceremony of the 2014 World Cup, like all other preceding tournaments, was also
tan event many looked forward to witnessing. Before the actual event at the packed Stadium began, there was plenty of speculation on whether American artist Jennifer Lopez (J-Lo) would be making an appearance to perform the Official World Cup Song – “We are one (Ole Ole).” She finally appeared but her moment was soon stolen by her fellow performer - Colombian star; Armando Christian Pérez (Pitbull) who wore tight white pants. J-Lo, Pitbull and Brazilian singer Claudie Leitte closed the opening ceremony, making way for the main event. All 61,600 tickets reserved for the opening encounter which was also attended by several celebrities and heads of states were sold.

The Captain
It is great news to hear that Cricket South Africa has appointed Hashim Amla as the new Proteas Captain. I was quite surprised to hear this news, as I had mentioned previously that I was sure that AB De Villiers would be the obvious choice, with Faf Du Plessis being appointed as the Vice-Captain for South Africa. As per media statements in the By Craig Norris past months, Amla would have seemed not to be interested in leading his country. However, I am sure that he will do a great job, as long as he gets the support from all the players and management in the Protea Camp. Amla is no stranger to leading a team, as he has always been at the helm, in terms of his early years as a captain of his school and provincial teams. The responsibility of being captain of your country, however, is totally different and throws plenty of curve balls at you. It is not a case of just putting on the national blazer and cap while standing on the pitch and spinning the coin before a test match. He will, as Graeme Smith experienced in his time, need all the help possible in not only guiding the team on the field, but also facing the national media across the world. There will be good times and there will be bad times in terms of results achieved; and as a captain you are ultimately accountable for all the decision-making. The offfield responsibilities of a captain in the modern game are massive and include facing the media at after-match conferences and team promotions. Many a Test player has folded under this type of pressure after a bad day on the field. I would like to think that Amla has all the qualities that a skipper needs to overcome all the hurdles that lie ahead. He is quite laid-back and has never shown any emotions while piling on the runs for South Africa. Hopefully this calmness will remain and Amla will be the skipper that takes the Proteas back to the top of the rankings. Sri Lanka will be the first task and then Zimbabwe, with the West Indies in the New Year.
