Brighter Futures Tuition, a South African start-up, which has been developed on an innovative mobile platform, is helping learners to improve their maths marks by up to 14% within a matter of months. The technology was developed by Siyavula, a Mark Shuttleworth Foundation beneficiary, offering extra maths tutoring using advanced interactive technology on mobile phones. This development has taken place against the backdrop of severe criticism of the performance of South Africa’s education system and a growing recognition of a link between basic mathematical skills and a country’s growth. According to Joanne Brink, CEO of Brighter Futures Tuition, parents are concerned that poor maths results may limit the career choices of their children. The combination of mobile technology and tutoring is compelling. There are currently six centres in Gauteng, including Alberton. The tutor in Alberton is Prince Mredlana, a Mathematics honours student at Wits. He says that he is really keen to start changing

BRIGHTER FUTURES: Sourced from Facebook the prevalent situation among high school learners who have so few choices due to poor marks in maths. Of his immediate circle of friends he was the only one who managed to go to university. Prince experienced the benefits that can come from getting the help you need in maths after failing maths at the end of Grade 11. He was selected to participate in a tutoring programme for maths in matric and as a result, his final mark was over 70%.
According to Prince, the cellphone interface is very easy to use, well optimised for cell phones, and quick. ‘’The greatest benefit of the technology is that it allows the learner to go back to basics of gaps in earlier work. It then helps to close any gaps so that learners can understand more complex work using a good foundation,’’ he explains. For more information, visit www. brighterfuturestuition.org.

LITTLE ENGLAND IN NEW REDRUTH
No street name is more Cornish than Fore Street. The word “fore” in the dialect of Cornwall means “main.” Most towns in Cornwall have a Fore Street, just as the main street in many towns in South Africa is named Voortrekker. Albany Street and Eaton Terrace are reminders of street names in St Ives
“DO YOU STILL REMEMBER THE OLD LIBERTAS BUILDING (PHOTO TAKEN IN 1959), NEXT TO THE WELL KNOWN CASBAH ROADHOUSE?” in Cornwall. St Aubyn Street calls to mind the baronetcy of St Aubyn, while Clinton Street was named after the barons of Clinton. The barons of St Aubyn went into English politics and represented constituencies such as St Michaels, Helston, Launceston and Truro. This baronetcy became extinct in 1839. The baronetcy of Clinton was created in 1298 and was seated in neighbouring county Devon.
March is already halfway over, yet it feels like yesterday when we came back to work, ready for a new year to start. I have
a large number of birthdays during March, which always serves as a reminder that big gestures aren’t what people are looking for. It’s the small things in life that give you joy. One of those small things in my life include fun facts, such as the fact that Saint Patrick’s Day, which is celebrated today, was made an official Christian Feast Day in the early 17th century. The day commemorates the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. Traditions - even your own made-up
A famous tourism attraction off the Cornish coast is St Michael’s Mount. It is a tidal island off Mount’s Bay, topped by a castle and chapel dating from the 15th century. Back in New Redruth, for some or other reason, the original street name was changed from St Michael’s to St Michael in 1959. In 1928, after failing to sell as agricultural holdings, the eastern section of New Redruth (the area south of the main post office, between Voortrekker road and the Natal Spruit) was re-aligned. With the stands cut down to residential size, three new streets had to be added to the grid, being Looe, Chasewater and Porthpean. It also meant that the only open space in that part of the suburb, Market Square, was sacrificed. In later years, when the once excluded parcel of farmland was proclaimed and built on, the surrounding streets of Fowey, Saltash and Trevithick disappeared off the map. Trevithick Street ran along the Natal Spruit
in roughly the same direction as the present Alwyn Taljaard Street (named after the Town Clerk of 1978). Richard Trevithick (1771-1833) was the mining engineer from Cornwall credited with inventing the first highpressure steam engine that led to the development of the railway steam locomotive. Falmouth Street, along the main post office, was re-named Du Plessis Street in 1955. To illustrate the strong connection between Cornwall and New Redruth, our Clinton Street houses the Union and Clinton hospitals – and in Cornwall, an internet search brings up a Clinton Nursing Home in Truro Road, St Austell, Cornwall. Vermiste atleet gevind
Minister passes away in car accident
SAPS MEMBER LAID TO REST It was a sad day for Alberton SAPS members, as one of their crime-fighters was laid to rest on Saturday 7 March. The officer passed away due to a private car accident while visiting his family at home. Const N P Moselane was a dedicated member and will be missed. The Station Commander Colonel Kubone thanked the Alberton CPF,
Victim support centre, SAPS members and the community for the support they showed to the family while they mourned the loss of a father, a child, a brother, a husband and a police officer. While other police officers take the baton from him to run the relay, may his soul rest in peace.

Minister of Public Service and Administration Collins Chabane and two of his bodyguards were killed on Sunday when the car they were travelling in crashed into a truck on the N1 near Polokwane. He and two guards travelling with him were declared dead on the scene. “President Jacob Zuma is saddened to announce the untimely death of the Minister of Public Service and Administration, Mr Collins Chabane in a car crash in the early hours of this morning,” said spokesman Mac Maharaj in a statement on Sunday. The driver has been arrested and charged with culpable homicide after

CMR ALBERTON DAY CARE PROJECT CMR Alberton is launching a new Day Care Project. The project will pilot with two informal daycare centres in Alberton with the eye on future projects opening soon in Eden Park and Thokoza. The project leader Bee Lourens has done extensive research on the subject, as well as attending workshops at the Department of Education on this matter. The objective of CMR Alberton getting involved in this project is to help women who look after children out of kindness while their mothers are at work, as there is no one else to take care of them. These wonderful ladies, however,
need equipment to stimulate the children’s development. For CMR Alberton to be able to help these informal daycare centres, they need a few donations. If there is anyone out there that has a jungle gym, small plastic tables and chairs, any toys, bikes or ride-ons lying around, they should please contact Ankia or Bee at CMR Alberton at 011 907 2922.
lewe skryf.
Klein Groepe PAASFEES DIENS Lydensweek MET dS WERNER SCHROEDER MAAN 30 maART - DON 2 april : 7PM GOEIE VRYDAG - dS WILLEM STRAUSS 3 april NAGMAAL DIENS : 8AM PAASFEES SONDAG - dS WERNER SCHROEDER 5 april 9AM DIENS EN KINDER KERK
[lukas 24: 6-7]

Today’s lifestyles have become sedentary in many ways. Longer hours on your computer, tablet or phone. Sitting in front of the television for longer periods a day, just too tired to do any active recreational activities when we get home. Sounds familiar? The human body is designed to go from sustaining the “Lord of the dance” pose in dancing to moving in multiple directions during most sports activities at various speeds and rhythms. It has the ability to gain incredible strength over a fairly short period of time. The ability to hold your own body weight in different exercise routines that focus on body weight training alone is the new challenge out there. There are various systems in the body that work together to keep u s healthy. The musculoskeletal system is the system responsible for enabling us to move. When well taken care of we move without pain or stiffness. Fascia is the connective tissue network that supports the musculoskeletal system. Without it, it would be impossible to move our bodies.
Community

Life stress, accidents and overuse put this system under tremendous stress. One of your brain’s main functions is to compensate so that you can continue in your habits and sports activities. It uses the fascial system to stabilise in areas where strain is experienced, causing one compensation pattern or another. This eventually results in spontaneous weakness and pain in no particular area of the body. Lynotherapy has been used effectively for over 30 years to eliminate pain and to identify weak areas in the body. Lynotherapy is a technique that focuses on the fascia of the body. Releasing the compensated areas is vital for regaining normal pain-free function, getting real benefit during your training hours and living life with a happy body. If you suffer from any musculoskeletal pain or have further questions about the technique, contact us at JVS Physiotherapy Inc. in Bedfordview at 011-616-0975 or visit our website for more information at www. jvsphysiotherapy.co.za. Let us help you get your body back into its “happy place.”

Collecting the rainwater from our own roofs may eventually be the only way of ensuring an adequate water supply during droughts. This is the key message for National Water Week, which begins on 16 March and ends on 22 March. During this week, as the need for sustainable management of the scarce resource is considered, it is also the right time to reassess rainwater harvesting as one of the prime solutions of water conservation, says Rod Cairns, managing director of JoJo Tanks. He explained that most South Africans obtain their water from dams which are generally remote from where the greatest concentration of users is. “This leads to expensive pipelines, pumping costs and high maintenance requirements over great distances at rates not sustainable into the future. Additionally, household water consumption per capita is increasing and the population is growing. New ways must be found to reduce, reuse and store water.” Rainwater harvesting is simple and easy and offers huge advantages. To consumers it offers self-sufficiency in water supply and the convenience of not being dependent on remote water sources. To the environment it offers a reduction in flooding and erosion caused by covered and sealed surfaces. Cairns said he believed that a water-secure world was a joint responsibility and that every South African should invest in some sort of system to save water. “We live in a relatively dry country, with an average annual rainfall of about 464mm (compared to a world average of about 860mm). Furthermore, rain tends to be concentrated in certain areas and does not fall consistently throughout the year. These
facts, combined with increasing pressures on water resources and infrastructures in South Africa and worldwide, indicate that there may simply not be enough water to meet our future needs and the need to save water will be forced upon us.” He has advised the community to consider rainwater harvesting as part of a sustainable water strategy. “With water prices under pressure to sustain infrastructures and water interruptions recurring more often, rainwater harvesting systems offer significant benefits, including convenience, water security and value.” He continued: “Although our first step should always be to reduce the amount of water we use, our next step should be to look at replacing the high quality drinking water we use for low-grade uses such as toilet flushing, irrigation, household cleaning and car washing, by installing rainwater harvesting tanks.” Cairns and his team at JoJo Tanks have encouraged all citizens to adopt a water conservation approach that is a combination of reducing the amount of water used, being sensitive to the many competing demands placed on this fragile resource and most importantly, to supplement non-potable water usage with rainwater that is free from the sky. “Water is the lifeblood of the planet. To conserve it we need to shift our reliance from centralised water supply lines to decentralised rainwater harvesting at point of use – a more robust, resilient and planet-friendly approach. Collecting rainwater from our own roofs may eventually be the only way of ensuring an adequate water supply during droughts,” he concluded.

and one of the most effective ways to reduce joblessness is to improve the education of the work-force, and one of the best methods to upgrade academic performance is to foster a culture of reading.
Their research has shown that parents who read to their children six or seven days a week give them an intellectual headstart of almost a year over children who do not enjoy this privilege, and even improve the performance of school beginners in numeracy. www.theage.com.au

Inspire a love of books from babyhood by buying cloth and cardboard books for babies and reading to toddlers and children. Put children to bed with a book. Let them turn the light off when they are tired of reading. Set a bed-time, not a sleep-time. Take your children to your local library regularly. Encourage Grade Ones and Twos to read everything they see. Put notes in your children’s school lunch-boxes or leave them lying around the house. Organize games that involve searching for written clues. For example, give children a slip of paper with the words “Look in the bread bin” written on it and hide another piece of paper saying “Check inside your left slipper” in the bread bin and so on, until the children eventually find a reward such as a chocolate. Write stories about your children in daily instalments – no child will be able to resist this one. Read books yourself.

BRACKEN BULLDOGS BITE DOWN ON VICTORY Bracken High travelled to HoĂŤrskool Drie Riviere on 7 March for a friendly sportsday that included hockey, netball and rugby matches. All the players had a great time competing in the various sporting codes. Most of the matches were tightly contested; however, in the main rugby event of the day, the Bracken Bulldogs proved too strong for the Dries first team with an emphatic 40-12 victory. Congratulations to the Bulldogs on their first victory of the season.

YOUR WORLD THIS WEEK FORD’S FLIGHT MISHAP
Harrison Ford of Star Wars and Indiana Jones fame took the bravado of his iconic roles to the next level when he crash-landed his WW2 vintage yellow fighter plane at a Los Angeles golf course on 05 March. Shortly after take-off, the plane’s engine lost power which forced the star to land. Ford was a mere distance away from the runway before his plane clipped the top of a tree before it crashed, leaving the actor seriously injured. It was the third time Ford has survived a crash landing. www.huffingtonpost.com

E T H I O P I A’ S SUSHI
The four year anniversary of the 2011 quake-tsunami disaster that swept away thousands of people was recently commemorated. Paying tribute to the 20,000 lives that were claimed by the disaster, various ceremonies were held in locations hit by the magnitude 9.0 earthquake. Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko led tributes to those who died in Japan’s worst peace-time disaster. At 14:46 local time the tsunami warning sirens rang out, the exact moment that the undersea quake hit. A national moment of silence followed. www.nbcnews.com
Just as the Japanese eat sushi, so Ethiopians enjoy raw meat. Called tera sega, it is a traditional dish eaten with spices and made from a freshly slaughtered cow or ox. It was invented by hunters who wanted to avoid making cooking fires, because the smoke could lead their enemies to them. www.wikifoundry.com

SOMETHING’S FISHY * Not an actual copycat catfish
South African seafood restaurant group Ocean Basket has discovered that a US company is using its name, logo and menu. Close to celebrating its 20 year anniversary, Ocean Basket’s Chief Executive Officer Grace Harding labelled the US-based restaurant an ‘unlawful copycat’ and accused them of plagiarising the Ocean Basket brand. Ocean Basket stated that it regards the issue in a very serious light. www.fin24.com
FREE FOOD FOR G O O D S A M A R I TA N S The Farmington New Hampshire Police Department in the US has been rewarding citizens with food vouchers due to their good behaviour amidst a cold winter. The police department began issuing gift cards for free pizza and fries to residents who use crosswalks, turn signals and otherwise obey laws that are often ignored. An idea initiated by Farmington Police Chief Jay Drury, the project was implemented after Drury witnessed a man make his way to a crosswalk in the heavy snow. www.huffingtonpost.com
A CHEESY FRIGHT
A 33-year-old woman from Sweden has such an extreme fear of cheese that the scent or even the sight of all types of cheese can send her into a panic, causing her to run away in fear. Dubbed Turophobia, the fear of cheese has led the Swedish woman to avoid dinner parties and supermarket delis. www.mirror.co.uk

A M E SSAG E FOR WORLD KIDNEY DAY Dr S. Wadee, Life Renal Dialysis, Life Bedford Gardens Hospital World Kidney Day took place on 12 March. The day serves several purposes including acknowledging the suffering of millions of people throughout the world afflicted with kidney diseases; creating awareness of the scope of kidney diseases; encouraging people to be aware of the important roles their kidneys perform; encouraging people to take action to screen for and to prevent the development of kidney diseases and to promote organ donation. The theme for World Kidney Day this year is “Kidney Health for All” which serves to highlight the differing access to care for kidney disease around the world. It also serves to alert the general public that all people have a responsibility to look after their kidneys. In
Feature
tame TIMES.co.za South Africa, kidney disease occurs mainly in people with hypertension and diabetes as well as people who are obese, have a family history of kidney disease or are using medicines, such as pain killers, that can damage the kidneys. It is often a silent killer, showing only mild or no symptoms until the condition is very advanced. People at high risk for kidney disease must have regular blood pressure checks and should take urine and blood tests to screen for kidney disease. People with hypertension and diabetes must be treated properly to control their blood pressure and sugars. To prevent kidney disease most people should ensure they drink plenty of water, avoid salty foods and prevent excessive weight gain. Furthermore, cigarette smoking can aggravate kidney disease. Avoid taking unnecessary medicines, especially anti-
inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). People who have severe kidney disease should be referred to a specialist to initiate measures to try to prevent end-stage kidney failure and its complications. End-stage kidney failure results in life-threatening complications due to the accumulation of toxins, acid, salt and water in the body. Dialysis is required to maintain the patient’s life at this stage. Many people with endstage kidney failure will survive and function for many years on dialysis, however, most people will benefit by getting a kidney transplant either from a deceased donor or from a living donor who is healthy enough to donate one of their own kidneys. In South Africa, access to dialysis is limited by poor state resources and bad organisation. Access to dialysis in the private sector is limited to those who have medical aid or who can fund themselves. This is an extremely expensive treatment and highlights further the importance of prevention. Details: www.worldkidneyday.org

Kaizer Chiefs and NWU Vaal team up for unique study
AMAKHOSI: the management of Kaizer Chiefs and Vaal Triangle Campus and some of the players In one of the first official knowledge generation projects of the Kaizer Chiefs Innovation Centre, which is situated on the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University (NWU Vaal), a practical research project will see academics from the Department of Industrial Psychology take to the sporting pavilion in the weeks to come. Researchers will – together with Kaizer Chiefs, investigate factors that contribute towards the levels of motivation of sports fans as well as the development of psychological affinity towards a particular sport team. According to Mr Ederick Stander, the Subject Chair of Industrial Psychology on the Vaal Triangle Campus, the research is aimed at better understanding the South African sport consumer – especially within the context of much sought after sporting codes such as soccer.
“Through this practical research initiative we will be able to provide the Kaizer Chiefs Executive Management with a greater insight and data breakdowns of why exactly different groups - within their current fraternity of fans, react and affiliate so strongly to the Kaizer Chiefs brand,” explains Stander. Another aim of the research initiative is to better understand fan behaviour to enable Kaizer Chiefs to further fine-tune their marketing and engagement strategies. Honours students in the programmes Industrial Psychology, Human Resources and Labour Relations will also get the opportunity to participate as fieldworkers on the project as part of their practicum. The latter refers to their Organisational Behaviour module.
