LET THE RACE BEGIN: The start of the Jozi South Half Marathon was filled with excitement.*Photo by Ilze Moore. Sunday morning was wet and cold with many people opting to stay in bed, however that was not the case for the participants of the Jozi South Half Marathon, hosted by Brotherhood Athletics Club, Gold Reef City and tame TIMES. They were all up at the crack of dawn, prepared for what the weather had in store for them with a smile on their face. The Kalmer sisters made their mark, running the Jozi South Half Marathon for the first time and both winning. Older sister Rene won the 21km and Christine the 10km race, both in the senior ladies category. Rene Kalmer told tame TIMES that she really enjoyed running the streets of Soweto, as it brought back sweet memories of when she won the Soweto Marathon. “It is really a pity about the weather.

Luckily while running it cools you down, it was really a nice race. She applauded all the volunteers, marshals and everyone who assisted in the rain. Lucky Mohale won the 21km in the senior men category with a time of 1h6m3s. David Manja came in second and Sibusiso Nzima third. In the 10km race Derocious Makhobolo took first place, Precious Mashele second and Samuel Matabutha third. Geshashia Gamanda took second place in the 21km senior ladies category, with Lebo Phalula coming in third. Both Phalula sisters had a victory as Lebogang also took third place in the 10km senior ladies. Tiny Mpho Mabuza took second place. Many people chose the fun 4km run in Gold Reef City Theme Park as all the entry fees

for this race went towards CANSA. Ten rand of each 21km and 10km entry will also be donated to CANSA. Hannelie Briel of CANSA said the donation will go toward research, education and support for all people affected by cancer. Due to the Jozi South Half Marathon supporting this worthy cause, there were several Peace Starts ambassadors who took part in the race. This became a challenge on its own with Olympic rowing medallist Lawrence Ndlovu, from Team Seize, challenging Cito, frontman of Wonderboom, from Team Showbiz. Obviously the sportsman won the challenge, but Cito accepted the loss in good spirit. For more results please visit www.entryonline.co.za

Conference Details 15 – 17 November 2013

R395 per person, including accommodation, all meals (16 and 17 November) and registrations. Venue: Beula Park Conference Center Mount Zion Prayer Mountain - Meadowdale Germiston Last week, an incident took place in Alberton that hit a little too close to home. Even though I wasn’t involved, the robbery of someone close to me shook me to reality and made me realise once again that your life is precious and that you should never take anything for granted. The story through the eyes of a victim can be read on page 3. It also shows that it is the things that we sometimes do take for granted, such as our health, that are some of the most important things that we should look after. And should illness strike, you fight back like those who shared their stories of survival on the tame TIMES Facebook page. Being part of a fantastic and supportive team at work is one of the greatest things that makes it absolutely worth it to get up and go to work every morning, and is also not to be taken for granted. We don’t only have fun at the office, we also make a mean Dragon Boat team, of which you can check out the photos on page 23. The Jozi South Marathon was once again a great success. Despite the rather miserable weather, even the runners were happy for the rain that cooled Gauteng down a bit. Hope you all will have a blessed week filled with reminders of things we can be grateful for.

Several staff members at Netcare Union Hospital participated in the signing of a pledge in support of an initiative to stop dialling while driving, initiated by Netcare Milpark and Union hospitals. The campaign was initially aimed at educating hospital personnel, including administrative staff, hospital management, nursing professionals and doctors, about the dangers of breaking concentration while using their phone while driving. An active commitment, through the signing of a pledge committing to a 7-day period of no cell phone use while driving, was taken by hospital staff. Although the real impact of using a cell phone while driving a car is difficult to ascertain, studies suggest that drivers using mobile phones are approximately four times more likely to be involved in a vehicle collision. This worrying statistic prompted Netcare Milpark and Netcare Union hospitals to come up with the initiative. “Healthcare workers can act as valuable role models for the public, however they too are only human and must from time to time be reminded of certain dangers, including using a cellphone when driving,” says Mande Toubkin, Netcare’s general manager emergency, trauma, transplant and corporate social investment. “We are asking that as from World Trauma Day on 17 October employees and management of the two hospitals actively participate in the Cellphone-free Zone Challenge, which will initially run until 24 October.” “We hope this week-long initiative will raise public awareness about the dangers of driving and dialling, and that it inspires others to take up the challenge of making their cars cell phone-free zones,” concludes Toubkin.

Rooftog laat drie vroue in skok

Elmarie Pretorius once again did outstanding investigation work and together with Capt Nico Stander, Capt Rudi de Kock from Jeffreys Bay FCS Unit and Capt Susan van Heerden from Upington FCS Unit, they reunited a broken family. Sonia Fontes wrote on the PSARU Facebook timeline: “First and foremost thank you Lord Jesus for guiding us to Elmarie and then working through Elmarie to find the two boys. Elmarie, there are no words to express how grateful we are for all your hard work. You were the only person who fought tooth and nail for those boys. You never took no for an answer, even when we may have doubted due to all the false promises that we got from so many other people. “You always kept in constant contact with me day and night, 24/7, and your professionalism in this matter was outstanding. On behalf of the family we would like to thank you so much from the bottom of our heart and we pray that the Holy Spirit keeps working through you. “We will always keep in touch with you, as the boys, although they only know you for a day or two, trust you and consider you as their friend. You are our miracle. Thank you. A big thank you to Nico Stander and Rudi de Kock and your team for your outstanding work. You have given us hope in our justice system once again, thank you. New mobile unit addresses cervical cancer PinkDrive unveiled the design for its new Mobile Women’s Health Unit on 11 October at The Pink Tie Dinner held at Emperors Palace. It has been a long time goal of the organisation to provide a full women’s health service and this unit is the first step in that direction. Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Gwen Ramokgopa is fully behind public benefit organisation (PBO) Cause Marketing

Fundraisers’ PinkDrive initiative, saying that she commends PinkDrive for committing unwaveringly to providing services in communities in SA. “Their health services are sustainable and patient-friendly. It is good to see how PinkDrive works with governmental health departments and institutions to provide these much needed services to our patients. The Minister of Health has delegated the issues of non-communicable diseases to me and we are prioritising reproductive health issues such as breast cancer, cervical cancer and prostate cancer, as these are the cancers that have the highest lifetime risk rates in South Africa. This unit will help the government to provide services to help detect these cancers in areas that have little access to proper medical healthcare,” Deputy Minister Ramokgopa said. The Unit will now house a gynaecology area for pap smears and examinations, a reception area for administration and a radiology area that is similar to the Mobile Mammography Unit. The unit is being assembled by MSTSV

or Mobile Satellite Technologies Specialised Vehicles, a Cape Town based mobile office construction organisation. The PinkDrive initiative has been running since 2009 with the first Mobile Breast Check Units. In only four short years they have raised the much needed additional funds and sponsorship for the commissioning of the over R5million unit. In closing Kotschan said, “This new addition will be another first in SA, as we will now be able to address cervical cancer. It is our dream to add to this truck by including services that address HIV and Aids, diabetes and hypertension, blood pressure, tuberculosis, and general health messaging. With this in mind, we would like to call on other organisations that may be involved in these areas of medicine to join us to create a full women’s health service offering. We are excited to begin this new endeavour and get out into communities.” For more information about PinkDrive visit www.pinkdrive.co.za or e-mail: Noelene@pinkdrive.co.za.

My Headvoice: Problems present opportunities, work is action personal and community safety not being exclusively delegated to the police, but that each individual should put the shoulder to the wheel and that’s the principal we should activate if we are to be seen as an authentically progressive community. We need to start extracting and applying fundamental principles out of the situations we find ourselves faced with. Talking does help, but please bear in mind there is a difference between progressively speaking about ills and whining. You cannot make a change to any situation by standing on the side-lines, whimpering and complaining. You make a difference by resting the jaw and getting the back muscles behind the grinding stone, and I challenge anyone to point out an instance where any good was achieved through coward-like complaining and illogical pity-seeking statements like ‘oh this country has gone to the dogs’. The only time that the latter will become true will be that unfortunate day when the active, the champions of progress, those who are not afraid of real work, are overwhelmed and fall into the regressive culture of nonactivity. Problems present opportunities. Let us know if you have any progressive ideas or examples of how a progressive approach has helped effect change. I challenge you to stop and consider another way before resorting to complaining. Let’s chat, e-mail me at voice@tametimes.co.za or tweet us at @tametimes.

After a week away I hope we haven’t grown too estranged. Quite a lot has happened since then, so believe me I’m finding it pretty difficult to focus on the issue I’ve decided to address today. Before we get into it, I must again thank the contributions, they keep me both motivated and worried - I’ll explain one day. On to the quote I’d like to base today’s column on: Service is the rent that you pay for room on this earth - Sherley Chisholm. As much as I’ve been sympathising with some of the general public’s grumblings directed at the so-called government due to some or other short coming, I cannot express how I at times pity us as a nation. We have become comfortable living in the dark shadow cast by the passive and often pessimistic attitude we have chosen to embrace. I’m not sure where the South African sense of entitlement comes from; I certainly was not at that meeting where we were granted the right to be the whiners we have become. Ask anyone what they think about the state of their community and guaranteed more often than not what you hear will leave you, and the questioned subject, facing the prospect of a ruined day. The opposite to this counterproductive sense of existence, contrary to the complainers reasoning, is not a sheepish attitude of accepting of an obviously unacceptable state of the nation - the opposite is an existence premised on work. Two weeks ago we discussed the issue of

Oe, die ydelheid van die mens darem! Daardie monster is net so gevaarlik soos die jaloesie outjie.

Hy wou bitter graag daar gaan sendingwerk doen. Soos ‘The Message’ dit stel: Jesus was matter-of-fact - “Embrace this God-life. Really embrace it, and nothing will be too much for you…”

KFC Add Hope gives food bowls to feeding scheme in Thokoza When you buy food at KFC, the lady taking your order always asks you if you would like to add R2 for the Add Hope campaign. Four years ago KFC launched Add Hope, their solution to filling the many hungry tummies of children in South Africa. Since 2008, KFC has been supporting the feeding scheme at Kethlikele Primary school in Thokoza. CMR Alberton administrates these funds and buys fresh vegetables on a weekly basis for the feeding scheme. For most of the children eating at the feeding scheme this is the only meal that they get for the day. It is initiatives like this from KFC that really makes a difference to children in our country. At this school there are 700 children every day, but only approximately 40 plates. This means that the children have to eat very fast and wash their plates, because there are other children waiting for the plate. On Monday, 14 October, representatives from KFC gave out 700 bright red bowls for the children to eat out of. This not only makes

meal time for the children easier and gives them more time to play during break, but also shows them that there are people out there that really care. So next time you order your KFC and the lady asks you if you would like to add R2, you know that the money really goes to needy causes. If you have any queries, please contact Ankia at 011 907 2922.

What can I do about child abuse? You have a moral responsibility according to the Children’s Act to report cases or suspected cases of child abuse to police

Check for warning signs that indicate that a child might be at risk or vulnerable. 1) Physical signs such as bruising, head Injuries, broken bones or malnutrition. 2) Change in behaviour such as not going to school, withdrawal, poor concentration, fear, anxiety, suicidal or self-harming behaviour. 3) Other signs such as obsessions, inappropriate sexual behaviour, inappropriate anger, bed-wetting and difficultly sleeping, or changes in eating. How do I respond when a child reports child abuse to me? 1) Believe the child. 2) Thank the child for having courage to talk to you. 3) Tell the child that it was not his or her fault. 4) Explain confidentiality – that although the child has disclosed in confidence, you as the adult need to report to the right authority, like the social worker, so that the child can get help and support. Address the child’s

concerns. Maybe share with them the understanding of “good and bad” secrets. 5)Recognise and be sensitive to the child’s feelings. Listen to the child, reflect on their feelings. 6)Reassure them you will find support for them. What must I NOT do? 1) Investigate the abuse. 2) Remove the child unless the child is in immediate and serious danger. 3) Confront the abuser or the parents. 4) Decide if the child is telling the truth or not. 5) Over-react when a child tells you of the abuse – listen kindly and calmly. 6) Make any promises to the child that you can’t keep. 7) “Bad mouth” the abuser. 8) You have a moral responsibility according to the Children’s Act to report cases or suspected cases of child abuse to police, social worker or any Child Protection organisation in your area.

Lost in space with Ster-Kinekor

Miguel Abrahams

miguel@tametimes.co.za Attending the Ster-Kinekor’s latest and greatest Movie Buffs evening was an offer I could not refuse. Hosted by Lee-Roy Wright last Thursday night was the screening of one of the most anticipated movies of the year - Gravity starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. This movie was released two weeks ago in America, and opened number one on the American box office for two weeks in a row. You can imagine the excitement of the inner sci-fi geek as the lights went out and the movie began. Right from the start you are thrown in space with a crew that consists of Dr Ryan Stone, a medical engineer on her first mission, and George Clooney as the veteran commander on his last mission. Things go wrong when a Russian station blows up and the debris manages to destroy all contact and transportation to earth. Everybody probably imagined what it must

be like to be lost in space, but Director Alfonso Cuarón manages to let the audience experience this first hand. What I experienced was claustrophobia, partially due to the greatest acting Sandra Bullock has ever done. There was a point where she couldn’t breathe and I felt like my own chest was tightening. Clooney and Bullock manage to put you in an emotional spin. Bullock’s performance can be compared to Ellen Ripley from the film Alien, where she begins to be meek, afraid and gradually begins to become somewhat of a femme fatale. The cinematography with one shot angles was seriously the best I’ve ever seen. The film was also praised by great directors such as James Cameron who said, “I think it’s the best space photography ever done, I think it’s the best space film ever done, and it’s the movie I’ve been hungry to see for an awful long time.” All in all, you should do yourself a favour and go to your nearest Ster-Kinekor to watch Gravity, and if you do not want to listen to me, you surely can’t refuse James Cameron.

ShakeXperiencing Macbeth The National Children’s Theatre in association with WITS Drama for Life are presenting numerous William Shakespeare plays in new and interactive performances for grade 8-12 learners. Drama for Life is an innovative form of teaching as it makes literature easy to learn by the use of dramatic art and music. tame TIMES attended the performance of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and caught up with the ShakeXperience actors after their captivating performance. Opened by McDuff, the audience is immediately captivated in the suspense of Macbeth. In a remarkable combination of the Modern and the Elizabethan era, Drama for Life’s rendition of Macbeth is set in a courtroom with two lawyers arguing the cases of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Through quick wardrobe changes the audience is transported between the two worlds through various re-enactments taken from Shakespeare’s play. Managing Director of ShakeXperience, Lali Dangazele believes the combination “allows students to relate to the modern context of lawyers but also understand the Shakespearean context”. According to actress Yale Kersh, “The courtroom assisted audience’s understanding of an argument. In the exam the pupils will be asked to give an argument and justify this argument with language. Our core aim was to provide the students with a stand in which they can defend both sides and substantiate why they used the examples they did.” After the performance audience members are encouraged to participate and give their opinions in a Q&A. Dangazele says that “theatre education uses various methodology to try and include the audience and give them the opportunity to

voice their opinions, and through a dialogue learn from each other”. The plays can be seen at our National Children’s Theatre new box theatre in the Wynnstay House on the following days: Thursday 24, Friday 25 October 09:30 Merchant of Venice Saturday 26 October 09:15 Midsummer Night’s Dream Saturday 26 October 11:00 Merchant of Venice Sunday 27 October 10:30 Macbeth Admission: R40.00 per learner and R70.00 per adult For enquiries and bookings: e-mail National Children’s Theatre at bookings@ nctt.org.za or phone the theatre on 011 484 1584. Equi-therapy changes little Justin life Little Justin (11) has cerebral palsy. Even though at birth the doctor said he had a 25% chance of survival, he is living proof of a fighting spirit and thanks to Equi-therapy his confidence and strength is both growing. His goal is to walk by the end of the year and by the grace of God, as well as him not accepting failure, little Justin will walk. Justin was born on 9 July 2002 with a heart defect. He was diagnosed with interruption of the aortic arch with a relatively hypo plastic aorta and ventricular septal defect. He underwent an operation to repair the interruption with the closure of the VSD, which went well but shortly afterwards his lungs collapsed. Unfortunately Justin was unable to suck due to his muscles being too weak and therefore he could not be breastfed. He required physiotherapy, which assisted with this, and was eventually able to breastfeed. After all of this, Justin was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. It was recommended that little Justin start Equi-therapy. This is a specialised therapy that

is made up of various activities and exercises, which the patient does while sitting on a horse. The horses natural movements stimulates not only the brain-vestibular system but improves patients muscle tone, eye and hand coordination, posture, balance, cardiovascular function, and increased physical fitness and

joint mobility. When Justin first started Equi-therapy he could not sit on the horse by himself, however after three years he is now able to do this without the assistance of his teacher Natasha Du Plessis and mother Isabel. His legs have become so strong that he can

stand. Give it some more time and add Justin’s perseverance, and soon Justin will be walking. For more information regarding Equitherapy please contact Natasha Du Plessis at 083 500 0412.

The number of signups have been confirmed for the launch phase of the Vaseline “Fan Of The Match” campaign, the key objective of which was to celebrate and reward SA rugby fans who have respect for the game and the opposition, and who show good sportsmanship instadium. The launch phase of the campaign took place both online and through live in-stadium activations at all three of the home games that were played over the course of the Castle Lager Rugby Championship. In Soccer City, Newlands and Ellis Park stadium, the Vaseline “Fan Stand” was set up where supporters were encouraged to take a quick survey to determine what type of fans they were. A total of 1 577 fans took part in the survey and pledged to uphold the principles of the Fan Of The Match campaign at the Fan Stand, with a further 1 124 pledging online to bring the total number of pledges to 2 701. This resulted in a decline in incidences of unsportsmanlike behaviour being reported at the games.“We were operating at almost full capacity for the big final at Ellis Park, with roughly 61 000 Springbok and All Black fans in attendance,” said Tarryn Steenekamp, media and PR manager of the Golden Lions Rugby Union. “At games of this nature, when tensions are running high, it is not uncommon to hear of incidences that break out between passionate fans. This Saturday however, I’m happy to say

that minimal incidences were reported despite the tense game that played out on-field,” said Steenekamp. As part of the Fan of the Match campaign, two lucky winners and their partners were chosen for the grand prize of attending the final in style. The winners were wined and dined on the Castle Stimela tour on the Rovos Rail, which took them to and from the final. “It really was an incredible experience and a great way to watch the final,” said prize winner Jason Scott. “Also, as an ardent rugby supporter myself, it’s nice to see a brand encouraging positive fan behaviour at games because there really is no better way to watch a game than live in-stadium, and any attempt to make that experience the best it can possibly be should be commended.”Vaseline brand manager Ryan Gosling reiterated the success of the campaign saying, “Though the Springboks weren’t able to beat their ageold rivals New Zealand at the final, the fact that the fans were able to enjoy themselves despite that shows that they have taken one of the central messages of the Fan of the Match campaign (namely that there is always a next year) to heart and that’s hugely positive.” “This is just the beginning for the Fan of the Match campaign though, after the phenomenal results we have seen this year and the great response we’ve had from people who have engaged with the fan stands at the games, there is no doubt that it will return bigger and better next year,” concluded Gosling. Fans can take the Fan of the Match pledge online at www.fanofthematch.com.

Gloomy end to bright season for Lions

Star-studded Western Province and on song crowd proved too strong for Golden Lions

Gloomy-hearted Lions supporters had to endure a gloomy-weathered weekend after the Currie Cup Semi-Final matches. High anticipation followed the fourth placed Lions in their match against log leaders Western Province, with many hopeful for an underdog upset from the traveling team. But, alas, it was not to be for the Jozi pride, as the match ended in favour of the current Currie Cup champions, 33-16. The Lions drew first blood on the scoreboard with a converted penalty by returning flyhalf

Elton Jantjes in the opening minutes. The hosts for the afternoon were not phased though and launched the first of many attacks at the visiting team. WP bashed across the try line, only to be caught out for a forward pass by the TMO. Instead, scores were drawn by converting a penalty of their own. Mere minutes later Catrakilis scored and converted a lightning try to put Province in the lead. Gio Aplon further extended that lead with a defence-shattering run that put him over the try line. A single penalty from Province and two more from the Lions ended the first half at 18 points to 9 in favour of the home side. The Lions had to defend most of the second

half, as Province pushed the attack hard into Lions territory. The visitors were able to hold the defensive line, forcing Province to be content with three penalties. A beacon of hope was given the Lions with eight minutes of play left, when Province hooker Scarra Ntumbeni was yellow-carded for a dangerous tackle. Lions eighth man, Warren Whiteley crossed the line for the pride’s first try of the match. Unfortunately the score was too little too late, and two more converted penalties by WP put victory well beyond the Lions’ reach. It was a gloomy end to a bright season for the Lions, as they were outmatched by a Province team at their peak. However, the recently-

embattled Lions team can be proud of what they’ve achieved, despite being excluded from this year’s Super Rugby tournament.
