Eskom power lines to pass through Alberton CBD Stephanie Conradie

N12 Alberton City
Civic Centre
ROUTE: The red lines on the photograph represent the route of the planned power lines. On Tuesday 10 June Eskom met with community members in Alberton North about new power lines that will pass through their properties. This was the first time the community had heard about the project and they asked their councillor if they could attend the ward committee meeting on 23 June to find out more about the power lines that Eskom is planning to put up between Jupiter in Johannesburg South and the Matla Power
Station in Mpumalanga in April 2015. Initially, the route for the power lines did not include Alberton, but it has now come to light that they will be built along the N12 highway, next to the houses on Marthinus Oosthuizen Street in Alberton North. The power lines will also go straight through Alberton CBD, and right in front of the town’s Civic Centre. It has also come to light that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study was not up to standard and that no public participation
consultations took place before decisions were made. Alberton residents will not benefit from these lines, as no extra electricity will be provided to Alberton. On 23 June, residents of Alberton North met with Clr Bruna Haipel at the Civic Centre to express their concerns and on 26 June these concerns were raised to the Ekurhuleni Metro and Eskom officials. The power lines will not only have a great impact on the central part of Alberton, but
also on Alberton as a whole. The ward committee is now in the process of arranging a public participation meeting with all the stakeholders, including Eskom, Ekurhuleni, Environmental Affairs, project managers and advocates. It is of utmost importance that all members of the community attend this meeting. Once a date has been confirmed, tame TIMES will publish the meeting details.

A Note from the Alberton has been in the news the past week for two major negative incidents, one being the assault at the Spur and the other one being the truck accident in South Crest. We, as a community, should also spread good news, so this week I would like to thank Seugnet Strydom for sharing the good news of the kind-hearted doctors who did everything they could to help her daughter and their family. Truck crashes into service station
Stephanie Conradie stephanie.conradie@tametimes.co.za On Friday 27 June, the driver of a truck lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the Coys Caltex Service Station, on the corner of Voortrekker and Paul Kruger Roads, in South Crest. According to Alberton SAPS, the truck first bumped a bakkie and then crashed into the service station where it hit a Mercedes Benz, injured one of the female petrol attendants and crashed into the store. Police believe that the truck’s brakes had failed. Fortunately, no petrol pumps were hit and Caltex emergency personnel were on the scene to ensure the area was safe. The driver and passenger of the Mercedes Benz, Theresa Nightingale and her son
Alistair Johnson, were fortunate to escape unharmed. “I was busy paying for the petrol when I heard the brake noises and I saw people running; then I just felt a bang and the car tipped over,” said Theresa. “We are very grateful to have no injuries,” she said. She went on to say that she had not removed her seatbelt when she reached the petrol station and it had held her safely in place. Tony Ribeira, owner of the station, is thankful that the office employees were at the back of the building when the truck collided with the store. Paramedics on the scene confirmed that the driver of the bakkie and the petrol attendant sustained minor injuries and that the truckdriver sustained cuts, bruises and a concussion. All three were taken to hospital.

Over 7000 meals packed in a day There is nothing more rewarding than giving a little of your time back to put a smile on someone’s face and warmth in your heart. Alberton Lions Club joined forces with several other Lions clubs in the district last Saturday when they got together and packed food parcels to feed hungry people in the community. Through Sizani Foods, they packed over 7000 meals containing rice and lentils in one sachet and fortified soya packed separately in another sachet. Food parcels will be distributed to various Early Childhood Centres, the elderly, soup kitchens and feeding schemes throughout the community. The food parcels are welcomed by hungry people and projects such as these make a huge difference in everyone’s lives. Alberton Lions Club would like to thank the
other Lions Clubs for joining this project and making it such a fun, successful day. It is amazing what can be done when service organizations, such as different Lions International Clubs, get together to make a huge impact through serving. Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization with more than 1.3 million members in approximately 45 000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world. Scrap dumped in Alrode street Stephanie Conradie
stephanie.conradie@tametimes.co.za Businesses in Adamson Ave, Alrode South are complaining about scrap and recyclable materials dumped in front of their premises. This is a consequence of the scrapyard and recycling plant in the street which attracts informal recycling entrepreneurs selling scrap materials and other recyclable items. Unfortunately, after sorting through the materials they have collected, the entrepreneurs tend to dump whatever they cannot sell to the plant. The result is a rubbish dump in the street in front of the businesses in the area. “We have been in contact with the Metro Police for some time now and they say that they will send someone out but this never happens,” said Zandru Gouws from one of

appointed to clean the area but that there won’t be someone permanent to keep it clean,” he continued.
BMW saves with innovative thermal solutions In the second quarter of 2014, Alberante BMW started installing a Photovoltaics system that will compensate the site’s power consumption. Angels do exist

Seugnet Strydom writes: My daughter Daniella is eight and has severe quadriplegic spastic cerebral palsy. She recently underwent major surgery, and was under the care of critical care paediatrician Dr Despina Demopoulos. Dr Charles Carrapinha, Dr Demopoulos’s husband, was Daniella’s surgeon. I can find no way and no words to thank these two amazing, committed, dedicated, kind people enough. I have been to many specialists, doctors and surgeons with my daughter, and never in my life have I met such wonderful doctors. To me they are not only the best doctors but also the most caring and loving angels send from above. It is sad to say, but there are doctors who do not see children with disabilities as living, breathing people. Some of these doctors give up before they have even tried to help these children. Dr Despina and Dr Carrapinha, however, treated my little angel, Daniella, like a
human being, with love, respect, care and dignity. They understood that Daniella is my child, my life, my everything, and did - and still do - care for me and my child. Thank you, Dr Despina and Dr Carrapinha, for everything that you have done for us, for taking such good care of my daughter - you treated her as if she were your own. You do amazing work, spending most of your life, every hour of every day, helping and caring for sick children. I can only imagine how tired you must get, because at the end you also just human, but never have I seen either one of you without a smile or a friendly greeting. You always listen and always explain. I never seen, heard or sensed angels until the day I met you two. From the bottom of my heart I would like to thank you for everything. You are absolutely wonderful, and I will be forever grateful that I have met you. Love Seugnet and Daniella

Tracking system Assault leaves one dead assists in arrests Six suspects were arrested for murder at the Little Eagle Spur in the Lemon Tree shopping centre on 22 June. It is alleged that the six suspects, aged between 23 and 27, assaulted 20-year-old Bradley du Preez after a bottle was thrown in their direction. The Alberton SAPS were called to the scene, and the suspects were arrested. They appeared in the Palm Ridge court on Tuesday 24 June, and the case was postponed until Friday 27 June. The suspects were charged with culpable homicide and will appear in court again on 8 August. It has been reported that the incident occurred in the smoking area after an argument between Du Preez and the six
suspects. It is not known what was said due to the fact that they were in the smoking area and no Spur staff were in that area when the argument took place. CCTV footage of the incident shows how one of the accused threw a rib-bone from his plate at the victim, which started the incident. Apparently, Du Preez was asked to leave the restaurant and then allegedly threw a bottle in the direction of the group. At this point the assault started. The staff and manager tried to break up the fight and the restaurant’s doors were locked in order to keep the six suspects inside while the SAPS were notified of the incident. Du Preez was declared dead on the scene and the suspects were arrested.
Drug awareness month June is Word Drug Awareness month. Research has shown that drugs are still a major problem in the Alberton area. The following trends are particularly noticeable:
IMPOUNDED: The recovered truck. Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Intervention Unit members received a lookout alert for a stolen Toyota Dyna truck that was stolen in Bedfordview on 18 June. The unit arrested two suspects and confiscated the truck and an accomplice vehicle in Eikenhof later that day. The tracker system fitted to the truck enabled the officers to co-ordinate the search with the tracker company members. The stolen truck’s trail was followed from Kliprivier Road, Alberton and through Kibler Park and eventually cornered on R554 in Eikenhof. A male suspect found driving the truck was
arrested and he informed the Metro Police that his accomplice was escorting him in a white Kia sedan. The accomplice was pursued and arrested as he attempted to get away. Implements used for breaking open motor vehicles were found in the Kia sedan. A docket of possession of a stolen motor vehicle was registered at Mondeor police station against the pair. One is 51-years-old and the other 54-years-old. Both confiscated vehicles were booked in at Aeroton SAPS pound. The duo appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.
Brackendowns welcomes Col van Vuuren After serving 4 years with the Alberton SAPS, Col van Vuuren is wellknown in Alberton; but now the time has come for him to take over the reigns at Brackendowns SAPS. “Being part of Brackendowns SAPS, I would like to encourage community participation. I am aiming to improve the crime situation in the area and to improve the service as well,” he told tame TIMES. “I have an open door policy - a member of the SAPS or a member of the public can come and see me any time to discuss crime issues or issues regarding the station,” he continued. WELCOME: Col van Vuuren has taken over the reins at Brackendowns SAPS
Dead man found next to R59 On Tuesday 24 June, tame TIMES received a call from an Alberante resident reporting a body found lying next to the R59. When we arrived, Fox Security were already on the scene and the SAPS arrived shortly thereafter. It is believed that the victim was a homeless man who was walking along the R59 when a HIT AND RUN: The body of a man was motorist hit him and drove off, but this could found alongside the palisade fence next to the R59. not be confirmed.
There is an increase in the variety and quality of drugs available on the South African market. The age of onset of experimentation is decreasing (i.e. young people who previously may not have experimented are now prone to doing so). Peer pressure to experiment with drugs is very strong. Very few drug-free entertainment places are available to youth specifically.
from drug experimentation and abuse. Tell tale signs of possible abuse: - young people are aggressive, rebellious and undisciplined with little or no regard for authority; school marks drop noticeably, bunking of classes becomes a habit; continuous mood swings, increasing demand for money. If you suspect your child might be involved with drugs, seeks professional advice.
The youth are seeking “spirituality” not in religious activity but rather in the “out of body” experiences provided by drugs.
Drug abuse often develops as a secondary problem, as drugs are seen by young people as an acceptable and highly effective way of dealing with problems.
Knowledge about the potential for adverse consequences does not deter young people

Brackendowns SAPS would like to warn the community about serious and violent crimes in the area. Suspects, they say, are using different models of luxury vehicles. They urge the community always to make sure gate motors and electric fences are in full working condition.
Fence-jumpers steal clothes On the morning of 26 June, fence-jumpers were active in the Mayberry Park area, stealing newly washed clothes off residents’ washing-lines. At around 6am, members of the Brackendowns CPF and Fox Security Reaction and Tactical Unit recovered two black jerseys filled with newly washed clothes in J.G. Strydom Street, Mayberry Park. A fence-jumping thief had dumped the stolen clothes after being spotted by CPF and Fox Security members and they were handed in at STOLEN LAUNDRY: The Brackendowns SAPS recovered clothes.

Commitment pays off Alberton High on their way to Europe In May, JKA Karate Unlimited in New Redruth entered 32 karateka in 45 divisions. Congratulations to these dedicated children (and parents) on winning 22 medals - a testament to Sensei JP Rodrigues’s commitment and training. For more information contact Tracey on 078 015 9216.
KARATEKA: Sensei JP Rodrigues and the medal winners.
The badminton and cultural learners from Alberton High are gearing up for their 2014 European tour. In Badminton, the boys’ 1st team won the SA Schools Championship in 2009, then went on to play in the All Africa Games in Mauritius, placing 3rd overall. In 2013, the girls’ 1st team placed second at the SA Schools Championships, adding to their tremendous growth. Since the inception of the championships in 2008, Alberton High has been on the top ten list for six consecutive years. Culturally, in the Public Speaking Guild Competitions the learners brought home two trophies in 2011 and 2013 for consistent excellence. In 2013 the Eisteddfod learners racked up 42 item winner certificates and the Drama club added another three trophies to the cabinet in 2014. Europe’s vast cultural history and a training session from the German Bundesliga will provide these youngsters with an experience that will undoubtedly enrich their lives. “Opportunities are like sunrises. If you wait too long, you miss them” – W.A. Ward. To the Alberton High tourists: may you never miss another sunrise.

is in 1992 in Alberton gebore.
