Primrose Informal Settlement has fallen victim to the violent xenophobic attacks that have been haunting the country over the last two weeks. Several foreign nationals were forced to flee their homes to Primrose Police Station when the attacks began. They also sought refuge at a nearby petrol station. Johannesburg CBD was under fire as well, as six people tried to break into a business last Wednesday, resulting in two people being injured. At least five people have died in the xenophobic attacks that started in Durban. Police were deployed to various hot spots on Wednesday in a bid to control the violence.

Satire
When you search for world news, the first thing that pops up on every website is South Africa. We have been in the news this week, unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. While the statue saga continues, xenophobic attacks are repeating themselves again and it’s moving closer to home. However, this is not what defines South Africa as a country. This is not what defines Alberton and Germiston as a community. I can proudly say that the majority of the news we receive from the community is positive. We get notified on a daily basis of something good that someone has done, or how people join forces for a good cause. The Champions Day at Turffontein Racecourse is taking place on 25 April, supporting no less than 11 charities. tame TIMES is excited to be a part of it, and we will be representing Mary’s Community Centre on the day. Lusito Land also starts on 24 April, hosted by the Lusito Association, an NPO for the physically and mentally challenged. It is still Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and we are touching a very important subject on page 9 this week – how to obtain a protection order. This does not only pertain to sexual abuse, but whenever you feel like someone is being abusive or harassing towards you in any way. We have two community heroines this week, so read more about how they make the community a better place on page 5. Also on page 5, see how you can become involved in helping those in dire need due to xenophobic attacks. Hope you have a peaceful week ahead, keep sending us your good news!

Koffie ruik soos vakansie. Of soos ‘n smeulende liefdesverhouding.

Let’s care for Mother Earth Earth Day – 22 April
By Lizeth Kotze (www.earthday.org) “It’s our turn to lead” is the theme for Earth Day 2015. It is an appeal to all to demonstrate their support for environmental protection on behalf of this planet, our only home. 10 Ways to show your support for Mother Earth (www.wikihow.com): • Plant a tree • Build a birdhouse • Learn more about the environment • Reduce, reuse and recycle • Clean up litter • Buy or make earth friendly cleaning products • Show support by wearing green or brown • Cook with locally produced foods • Ride your bicycle • Save water
On this day in 1994, the first democratic election was held in this country. The ANC was voted into power and Nelson Mandela was elected as the President. Since then, we have come a long way - some might say for the better, while others might disagree. Either way, Freedom Day is celebrated with enthusiasm and many social events occur throughout the country. On this day, people pay tribute to all who sacrificed their lives to gain liberation for South Africa.

Youth & Young Adult Conference 23 – 25 April 2015 Taking Over Generation Conference God wants young people to understand that He gives them the ability to live radically for Him. We are bombarded with news reports of young people living reckless lives, without direction or understanding of their existence and purpose, which leads to young adults making impulsive decisions that impact negatively on their destiny. The conference organisers believe that young people need to know the will of God for their lives, as well as His mandate for them. They make the following statements: ·
Children of God Can rule; We are not manipulated by the system of the world and We will be the Taking Over Generation. The conference will include breakthrough worship sessions, celebration and ministry on relevant topics that will raise up a Taking Over Youth and Young Adult Generation. Together, young people can impact schools, workplaces, communities, the economy, education, the arts and the nation. Bediening aan Silwerkroon Woonstelle
PAASFEES DIENS

LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD Everyone in South Africa has the opportunity to raise a voice and share an opinion on the major issue of sexual abuse. Alta McMaster is asking everyone to send their best picture messages of their views on sexual assault, which she will post to the EPIC website and Facebook page and share with the media in an effort to help raise awareness about this terrible crime affecting so many people. We need to raise our voices in South Africa and stand together to make people aware that this is a real problem in our country. It’s time to take a stand and open the eyes of those who do not want to see and speak up when no one else wants to. Send your photos to the EPIC Foundation at info@epicfoundation.org.za

by Billiam Walsh THE JOURNAL OF WILLIAM BUTTON
9 March – Father Elam has left for Tsavo. He is to marry a young couple and will not return for four days. Construction continues. 13 March. – Dark brooding clouds decorated the landscape in shadows as Robert and I entered the indigenous village. Aside from the Maasai huts there wasn’t much else; some maize fields, matoke banana groves, gardens filled with beans, sweet potato, and lots of fruit. If you blinked, you would be through it at a moment’s notice. As we passed by headless chickens hanging from rusted hooks and children carrying water toward their homes from a nearby river, Robert asked a few of the villagers where we could find Father Elam. Some told us to leave them alone and others blatantly ignored us or spat at our feet. It wasn’t until we bribed some of the children with a few Indian Rupees that they told us where he was. We found him on his knees with a small group of people under a giant baobab tree, surrounding it, with their hands bonded to the trunk as if they themselves were the roots. They took their wooden bowls, filled with water, and gently tilted them, spilling the water at the tree’s beginnings and prayed in whispers. They perform this ritual seven times a day for seven days asking the land of Africa that their relatives be healed. After the ceremony I pulled Father Elam aside as the others watched on. I told him that I need the people of this village to return to the railway. His immediate response was, ‘no!’ I implored him to listen to me, for if he doesn’t it will be at the expense of his people’s livelihood. ‘And your ivory trade,’ Father Elam added before turning from us. Out of desperation I tried appealing to his faith in God but with unforgiving eyes he said, ‘Mister Button, I am not your friend. I have a friend, God, up above. I talk to him, every day. normally respond to threats very well but Robert insisted that we leave right away. And so we did, with a prophecy that followed behind us like a lion stalking its prey. On our way back to the campsite I asked Robert what he made of Father Elam’s prophecy. ‘What, the coming of the rain?’ he scoffed, ‘it’s perfectly normal this time of year.’ A comforting thought. But what was less reassuring was the saying they have here in Africa – sikio kwamba haina kusikiliza ushauri, unaambatana kichwa wakati ni kung’olewa mbali - the ear that does not listen to advice, accompanies the head when it is chopped off. ‘Well,’ I said as the black African sky lit up in the distance, ‘Let’s just hope it doesn’t rain, then.’ 14 March – Convinced that the thunderstorm was heading toward Jinja we left the railway to the wild green stalks and returned to our tents. I waited alone and spent the morning writing a letter to an old friend, Colonel John Patterson, who was commissioned to build a railway bridge across the Tsavo River. – My Friend, – My apologies for not writing sooner. Shortly after you left for Tsavo I received word that Henry Johnston had passed away and was immediately commissioned to finish the Jinja railway. I have been here for twenty-nine days and since my arrival I have been met with considerable difficulties. I wish I were writing to you under better circumstances but as of yesterday, it has become clear that the Jinja railway will not meet completion without further support from the British East African Railway Commission. I have just written to them asking that they license me a sizeable lot of labourers from British India. From what I understand you have done the same. In the interim I await a downpour as its thick earthy scent draws closer, as does my supposed absolution. Write to me soon. – Your friend, William.

affidavit and complete an application form at at a police station. Supporting affidavits by persons who have knowledge of the matter in question may accompany the application. These documents must be handed to the clerk of the nearest court. The court will consider the application immediately. The application for a protection order is not limited to the complainant. An application for a protection order may be brought on behalf of the complainant by any other person who has an interest in the well-being of the complainant. This includes a counsellor, a health service provider, a social worker, a teacher or a member of the SAPS. If the court is satisfied that there is sufficient evidence that the suspect is committing, or has committed, an act of domestic violence/harassment - and unnecessary hardship may be suffered by the complainant as a result of the act, the court will issue an interim protection order against the respondent. The application for an interim protection order may be brought at any time and not only during office hours or on court days.
The purpose of this interim protection order is to provide immediate protection to the complainant. The interim protection order has no force or effect until it has been served on the respondent. The court is also required to issue a suspended warrant of arrest for the respondent. A breach of the protection order requires that the respondent must be arrested by the police immediately. The interim protection order is not a final order from the court, but a temporary order which grants immediate relief until the return date (the date on which the applicant and the respondent, after being given due notice, are to appear before court to have the protection order made a final order). On this return date, the respondent is afforded the opportunity to present to the court reasons why the protection order should not be made final. If the respondent does not appear in court on the return date, but the court is satisfied that proper notice has been given to the respondent and that there is sufficient evidence that the respondent has committed, or is committing, an act of domestic violence/sexual harassment, the court may make a final order on the return date. (www.saps.gov.za)
When applying for a protection order, the complainant may request for the removal of the respondent’s firearm or other dangerous weapon. If the Magistrate orders the police to remove the firearm, the police will keep the firearm until the case has been finalized. The firearm can only be returned to the respondent by order of the court, and the court may add conditions. The court may also order the State to keep the firearm if it is in the best interest of the victim’s safety. It is important to remember that criminal charges may be laid in cases where acts of domestic violence/ sexual harassment constitute an offence, such as assault or rape. It does not mean that one must first exhaust the remedies available under the protection order before laying the criminal charges, if this offence was committed. One can register the criminal charge with or without a protection order. The court may order a police officer to accompany a complainant to retrieve his/her property from a specified place to ensure the safety of the complainant.

VACCINATION WEEK
HEALTH & WELLNESS
By Dr S Strachan, Paediatrician, Life Bedford Gardens Hospital
African Vaccination Week provides an opportunity for countries to strengthen immunization services and systems through advocacy, education and communication tools and activities. the single most effective intervention to reduce death and harm in children. We have seen this happen over the past 30 years with the dramatic reductions in polio, measles, tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough. We have seen equally dramatic reductions in dehydrating gastroenteritis and pneumococcal meningitis and pneumonia in the past six years with the introduction of Rotarix and Prevenar to our Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI).
Vaccines save lives
Vaccines and clinics
We are living in exciting times because in our life time we will see the global eradication of polio. South Africa has already been certified polio-free and is now participating in the worldwide plan to eradicate polio. Small pox is the only infectious disease that has successfully been eradicated and polio will be the second. Measles and tetanus are the next two infectious disease being targeted for eradication and each region of the world is striving to achieve these targets. The most important part of controlling an infectious disease, preventing outbreaks and eventually eradicating the infectious disease is making sure that all children are vaccinated. The target here is to vaccinate more than 90% of children in 80% of the districts in South Africa and to have no district where less than 80% of the children are vaccinated. If this is achieved, we will then have created an environment where a sufficient number of children are vaccinated to prevent the spread of any wild infection. This is referred to as herd immunity. Areas that have vaccination coverage lower than 90% are at risk for outbreaks of the very diseases for which there are vaccines. This occurred in the two areas in South Africa where measles outbreaks were experienced last year. The immunisation of a population is
Vaccines in South Africa are available from government municipal clinics and private clinics. Private clinics can be found in pharmacies, hospitals and as individual entities. There are a few important facts about these clinics and the vaccines they offer: • All vaccines supplied by all of these clinics are of exactly the same quality, are made by the same manufacturers and should be given according to the same schedule. • The private vaccines are not of higher quality or purity. • Private vaccine clinics may have government-supplied vaccines in stock and these must be given free. • If a private clinic uses private stock then
you will have to pay for your vaccines. • Private clinics may charge a fee for baby checks, advice, neurodevelopmental assessments and other medical assessments. All vaccine-related services at government clinics are provided free of charge. Vaccines are now available as combination vaccines. In South Africa we use a six-inone vaccine against polio/whooping cough/ diphtheria/tetanus/haemophilus influenzae and hepatitis B. Using this combination vaccine means that children can be vaccinated against multiple diseases with one injection where previously this required multiple shots. The side effects of pain and redness and mild fever are not increased by using combination vaccines. Vaccines start at birth with the BCG (TB vaccine) and polio drops. The first wave of vaccines occur at six, 10 and 14 weeks of age and then at nine months of age. This schedule is the same for both government and private clinics. It is from 12 months of age that the schedule starts to change because of the vaccines that are only available at private clinics. These visits are clearly marked on vaccine cards and will be explained by the
clinic sisters. The vaccines start at an early age because the infectious diseases occur more commonly in children under one year of age and cause more death and damage than if they occur in older children. This means that we try to protect the youngest children from the worst infections. Vaccines do not give long-term immunity after one dose, so booster doses are essential. This is provided for in the schedule, with vaccine visits at 18 months, six years and 12 years of age. It is really important to remember to go for these vaccines. The Cervical Cancer vaccine (Cervarix or Gardasil) is given from nine years of age. The National Department of Health is making this available to all girls who are nine years of age in Grade 4 at all government schools. It is important for children at private schools to ensure that they receive this vaccine too. Remember that a child has the right to health care and a right to be protected. Parents or caregivers have the responsibility to vaccinate their child against serious infectious diseases. Every day is vaccination day.

This year’s World Immunisation Week runs from the 24 to 30 April with the theme “Close the Immunisation Gap –Vaccination for all.” At the heart of this theme is the fact that one in five children in the world is missing out on essential vaccinations. This is occurring because of lack of funding for vaccines or challenges in delivery of vaccine services in some countries. Africa Vaccination Week is running concurrently with this initiative under the theme “Vaccination a gift for life.”

Feel the rush of Jozi’s Intercontinental Village Champions Day at Turffontein on Saturday 25 April is fast approaching and at last week’s launch event the eagerly awaited Champions Day Charity Draw was held shortly after the release of the final field for the Gr 1 SA Derby. The draw paired each horse running in the Derby with one of the eleven communities which will be showcased on the big day in the popular on-course Intercontinental Village. The communities will in turn each be representing a charity and a media partner. tame TIMES is proud to be partnered with Ivory Coast and to be representing Mary’s Community Centre. The Derby runners will earn money for the charity partners based on their finishing positions. Three other entities that will have a strong presence on the day - Ferrari, SOJO and Racing It’s A Rush - will also each be representing a charity and media partner and were also included in the draw. There was much anticipation ahead of the draw and the representatives of the Ivory Coast were delighted when they drew the likely SA Derby favourite French Navy. The money donated to charity will be allocated as follows: R45,000 for the charity partner of the SA Derby winner, R30,000 for the charity partner of the SA Derby runnerup, R15,000 for the charity partner of the third-placed horse, R10,000 for fourth place and R5,000 for any other finishing position. The eleven different communities in the
Intercontinental Village will be showcasing their cultures through food stalls, craft, costumes, and onstage dancing. The dancing is always a hit and the vigorous Zulu dancers of South Africa always draw much applause. However, all of the on-stage performances, ranging from the graceful dance of the ancient Chinese culture to the energetic rhythm and bravado of the Scottish Highland dancers, is always much appreciated by the festive audiences. The food, such as espetada and pregos from Portugal and chicken satay, prawn tempura and curry and rice from India, is invariably mouth-wateringly delicious and adds to the rich vibe in the Village. There is also much to look forward to on Champions Day from a racing purist point of view as the meeting features five Gr 1 events and four Gr 2s, including the Gr 1
