P8 State Prosecutor John Ntuli brought to light the fact that the driver has previous convictions On 14 October, tragedy struck Alberton when a truck from Benusi Cargo Carriers crashed into multiple vehicles on the N12 East near Voortrekker Road. 48 cars were involved in the accident, which was described as a horror crash. Two people died on the scene and two more were confirmed dead in hospital, bringing the total death toll to 4 people. Critically injured patients urgently requiring advanced life support were airlifted by medical helicopter to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital for further medical treatment. The
remaining patients were treated for their injuries and transported to nearby hospitals. The driver of the truck, which was carrying building material from Potchefstroom to Germiston, told local authorities that his brakes had failed, causing him to collide with multiple vehicles. Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Dr Ismail Vadi visited the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital where three of the critically injured victims from the horrific crash are being treated. Dr. Liezel Taylor, who was on duty when the crash took place, told the media that

one of the patients had to undergo three operations within the first 24 hours after the crash and was on a ventilator after sustaining injuries to the chest, heart and lungs. Another patient was admitted with heavy bleeding on the head and suffered internal bleeding to the liver and chest - the patient had undergone two operations since being admitted shortly after the crash. The third patient had suffered fractures to the arm and was expected to undergo brain scans, but he was in a stable condition and alert. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3.

Empowering communities to create entrepreneurs In a bid to make South Africa the entrepreneurial capital of Africa, Ingcambu Projects hosted the Inaugural African Entrepreneurship, Business and Leadership conference at the Alberton Civic Centre on 6 and 7 October. In his opening address Oliver Chikodzore, Chairman of Ingcambu projects, explained some of the challenges the South African government needs to deal with. According to him, the South African government needs to develop a clear social housing plan. There is also a need for a social umbrella for vulnerable citizens, whether they be children or older citizens, as well as a future integrated mobility plan concerning matters such as the maintenance of our roads as well as an efficient public transport system. “We don’t tell our stories enough. We need to broadcast the innovation that comes from our country,” said Oliver. He believes that a key to achieving the goal is better involvement and support from the government: government must create an enabling environment and build infrastructure, and the policy-makers need to include the business community when they create their policies. “I think that the government has an obligation to create the ideal environment for innovation to take place,” he continued. As a young social entrepreneur, Oliver
believes that our country needs to be cocompetitive. The country needs an innovation conference where vvarious businesses can come together and brainstorm. He said that once these different minds come together, research and development starts to take place. Topics discussed at the conference included the concept of Smart Cities in Africa and Facilitating Performance by Leveraging Personal Leadership Strengths. Seven key elements form part of smart cities. They include smart building, smart citizens, smart health care, smart transportation, smart government and security, smart energy, and smart infrastructure. However, for the concept of Smart Cities to work, Lucas Matjiane from Just-Do-It-Right Coaching explained that the unemployment rate needs to be drastically reduced. He spoke about unrealistic expectations, saying that Africa wants people living in impoverished communities to become entrepreneurs and to provide jobs for their fellow community members. “We need to keep in mind that these people have no money, no work experience and no qualifications to enable them to start up a successful business,” he said. Oliver said: “The one statement that stood out for the conference was the need for businesses, government and universities to

Hierdie ongeluk is as ‘n tragedie beskryf, meer as 40 motors was daarin betrokke. Vir my is dit ‘n absolute wonderwerk dat net 4 mense oorlede is. Laat weet my wat jy meer van hou om te lees, die ‘feel-good’ stories of die groot tragedies wat plaasvind. Stephanie. Conradie@tametimes.co.za.

Models mad hatters show
On Saturday, 11 October, Figures Models Alberton held their last show and graduation for the year at the Brackenpark Hall. The theme was Mad Hatters and everyone was in for a feast of creativity. There were giant ice-creams, flower power, real sweets, teacups, jellyfish, pirates, spider hats, ‘liewe heksie’ hats, Moulin Rouge type plumages and much more. This was a show with a difference. The parents were the judges and they had a special judge card to judge all the hats in their daughters’ or sons’ categories. The hats were judged on originality and visual impact. Tieghan Griffin-
Coetzer, came tied third place in her category with her jellyfish hat invention.

Horror N12 crash:

News
Ekurhuleni by-law team blitzes Germiston CBD
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 “This was one of the worst accidents in our province,” Dr Vadi said. “This cannot be described as an accident, it was a horrible crash,” he said. Dr Vadi continued to say that the Roads and Transport Department will now push their road safety campaign even harder. “Truck overloading and mechanical problems are a major problem in the private sector and we will toughen up on the freight industry,” he said during a media briefing. The driver appeared at Palm Ridge Court on Thursday on four counts of culpable homicide and one count of reckless and negligent driving. State Prosecutor John Ntuli brought to light the fact that the driver has previous convictions: culpable homicide in 1999, and reckless and negligent driving in 1997. The 44-year-old accused was arrested in Potchefstroom on Wednesday. The lawyers representing the driver, Gerhard Louw and Deon van Staden, told the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court that they had not received instruction to proceed with the case after his appearance on Thursday, and withdrew. The case has been postponed until 22 October and the accused now has time to present his bail application and apply for legal aid representation. Magistrate Hlubi said that the State is expected to compile all neccessary information for the bail application to proceed. The accused will remain in custody. The City of Ekurhuleni is calling on truck owners with a gross vehicle mass of 3 500 kg and more to visit its testing stations for free vehicle assessment. This campaign is open for the entire month of October to mark National Transport Month. The participating testing stations include those in Nigel, Springs, Brakpan, Germiston, Boksburg and Kempton Park. The free testing campaign seeks to curb fatal road accidents that occur as a result of unroadworthy vehicles. Owners of taxis and buses are also encouraged to do the test, which involves the checking of tyres, brakes, hand-brakes, steering mechanisms and the general condition of vehicles. The MMC for Transport, Cllr Thumbu

CARNAGE:The aftermath caused by the runaway truck which left four dead Mahlangu, encourages all public transport operators to visit the City’s designated testing stations in order to be informed about the roadworthy status of their vehicles so that corrective measures can be taken, and so that they can ultimately prevent deadly accidents. Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Clr. Mondi Gungubele also commented on the crash, saying: “I sincerely hope that the trucking companies will accept our gesture of free assessment for their vehicles with the mass of 3 500kg and above. This is our attempt to minimise accidents like the one - we are still trying to recover from which happened in Alberton on Tuesday. Together we can minimise accidents and loss of life on our roads.”
Blatant contravention of by-laws in the Germiston CBD prompted the Ekurhuleni Municipality to crack down on the area on Thursday 9 October from 9:00 to 13:00. The integrated by-law enforcement team consisted of various representatives from EMM departments, SAPS, the Home Affairs Department and officials from law firms practised in identifying counterfeit goods. Ten huge bags of fake clothing and footwear were confiscated, nineteen undocumented persons were arrested and four men were arrested for possession of dagga. Streets where furniture and goods are illegally displayed on pavements and obstructing pedestrians were targeted, including High, Voortrekker, Lambert, Oosthuizen, Plantation, Park, Simpson, Simmer, Meyer, President, Spilsburry, Knox Railway, Leipold, Library and Jack. Illegally parked vehicles were towed away, furniture and goods displayed illegally were confiscated and certification of operating businesses was checked. Heavy fines were meted out to businesses not complying with the city’s regulations. Fake brands confiscated included Adidas, Puma, Nike, Lacoste, Levi’s, Louis Vitton, Dunhill and Boss. These special operations, which are bent on cleaning up our towns, will be ongoing. All the arrestees were charged at Germiston Police Station and were expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Friday 10 October.

Investigation commissioned by NCR
The National Credit Regulator (NCR) has announced that it is commissioning an investigation into various credit providers regarding shortfalls arising from sales of consumers’ repossessed motor vehicles and houses by credit providers. The investigation is part of the effort by the NCR to ensure that credit providers sell consumers’ repossessed motor vehicles and houses as soon as reasonably practicable
or for the best price reasonably obtainable. “Credit providers should ensure that they sell consumers’ repossessed motor vehicles and houses as soon as reasonably practicable or for the best price reasonably obtainable so that consumers are not liable to pay shortfalls that are substantially high. This is an issue of serious concern to the NCR,” Nomsa Motshegare, Chief Executive Officer of the NCR said.

DRS pays tribute to Dr Butters It is with a sad heart that we at Diagnostic Radiological Services (DRS) pay our respects to the late Dr Jennifer Butters. On the afternoon of 2 October, we received the news of Dr Butters’ murder that occurred at her home in Donegal Avenue, Parkview. She was stabbed in the neck by unknown perpetrators and bled to death on the scene. According to security company ADT, they received a panic alarm from the house and rushed to the scene. Dr Butters was barely alive when they arrived and bled out from her neck wound. It was like a shock wave through the practice and made us realize just how fragile our humanity is. Dr Butters was only 55 and was a very energetic, religious person who disliked
– Luk 19:38. In hierdie teksgedeelte kom Jesus Jerusalem binne terwyl die skare volgelinge juigend hierdie lofgesang uitroep. unfairness in any form. She had contributed many years to the practice of Radiology and was well liked by her colleagues. One of her two dogs was also stabbed in the ear and both dogs have subsequently been adopted by her close colleague Dr Aphrodite Gogakis. No signs of forced entry were noted and no valuable items seemed to be missing from the home – the reason for the attack is still unknown and the police investigation is ongoing. This violent senseless act has left us flabbergasted in the absence of Dr Butters. Dr Butters’s Memorial Service took place on Friday 10 October at the Wesleyan Church in Craighall Park at 18:30 and was well attended by family, close friends and many fellow colleagues. She leaves behind her brother. Dr Butters worked mainly at the Linksfield and Bedfordview branches of the DRS practice and her unnecessary death has left a big hole in our hearts. We will miss you dearly, Dr Butters, and pray that you are now safely in God’s arms.
Hoe U dit elke dag so onderhou. Dan moet ek juig my redder en my God, Hoe groot is U!

VIPS: all glammed up In 2012 Louise Wood and her son Jason van Schalkwyk started the Girl and Guy Dream Come True charity in Cape Town. For the past two years they moved the charity to Germiston. The Girl and Guy Dream Come True project visits selected schools in search of Matriculants to pamper them for their Matric dance. The school then selects special boys and girls who deserve great pampering on this special day. 15 matriculants were selected from Afrikaans Hoër Germiston and treated to a spa day, hair, make-up, dresses, suits, lunch and photoshoot.
Four dresses were sponsored by South African designer Michael Bezuidenhout; the other dresses, jewellery and suits were sponsored by Lettie Davey from Bon Bons in Alberton. The Reef Street Rod Club in Germiston sponsored old fashioned cars to help the matriculants make a grand entrance. Hair and make-up was done by the students from Ekurhuleni West College Germiston Campus’s Hairdressing and Cosmetology Department. Lions Rest Bed and Breakfast opened up three rooms for the VIPs to get

We want them to know that someone believes in them,” said Adré Lombaard, Louise’s business partner and former teacher at Afrikaans Hoër Germiston. Driver killed by hitch-hikers On Wednesday 15 October at around 15:30, a motorist from Buhle Park was shot dead on the N17 Westbound near the Alberton bridge. The driver was in his Nissan LDV with a passenger when he picked up two men near the Alberton bridge. The hitch-hikers allegedly shot the driver in the forehead, fatally wounding him, but left the passenger unharmed. Apparently in an attempt to speed away, the deceased crashed the vehicle into the freeway barriers. The two suspects fled the scene and are still at large. It is suspected that the perpetrators came from the nearby informal settlement, as there is a footpath from it to the N17 freeway. The passenger informed the police that the two men hitch-hikers had claimed they were on their way to Johannesburg. Motorists are warned to be vigilant if their vehicles break down in and around that location. Additionally, motorists are reminded that stopping on the freeway is an offence and very dangerous, unless such action is beyond the driver’s control.

CIGARETTE FRAUD: The arresting officers with the suspect Alberton SAPS arrested a 34-year-old foreign national after their patrol vehicle received a complaint from a Metro officer about illegal activity taking place at a house in South Crest. On investigation, the SAPS found three males in the house busy packing boxes of cigarettes
with sawdust. It appears that the empty cigarette packets were filled with sawdust, resealed and then sold. Two of the suspects managed to flee, but the third suspect was arrested. He was charged with contravening the Tobacco Act 83 of 1993 and will appear at Palm Ridge Court soon.
R15k drugs nabbed in Mayberry Park A night stop-and-search operation in Mayberry Park on 15 October yielded the arrest of a Nigerian national in possession of narcotics with an approximate street value of R15 000. The arrest was made at 21:30 by EMPD Germiston Crime Prevention Unit members. His bag was filled with six small plastic bags of dagga and nine ziplock bags of CAT. The suspect was arrested and the drugs were confiscated. These operations are conducted in and around identified problematic locations in the Alberton and Germiston areas on a regular basis with the objective of preventing crime. This particular operation in the Alberton area commenced at 18:00 on Wednesday evening and concluded around 04:00 on Thursday morning.

Safety tips for the festive season
Then let’s get in touch
Alberton SAPS would like to remind the Alberton community of some basic safety tips to prevent crime. As the festive season is approaching and criminals, like everyone else, need money to spend during that period, crime may start to increase. The SAPS is urging patrollers to patrol and everyone needs to be alert. Together we can make it happen. Preventing house-breaking and theft: Know all emergency numbers. Keep your cellphone in the bedroom. Never leave keys in a gate or lock. Use lights to your advantage: Lights that are on inside while it is dark outside
put you at a disadvantage. Never leave workers or contractors unattended at your home. Do not leave ladders standing around. Conduct thorough background checks before employing anyone (permanent or casual workers). Request their identity document and make a copy for safe-keeping. Check their references and ask for security clearance from the SAPS. Be careful about what is discussed in front of staff. Do not leave your garage, front or back door open or partly open – it serves as an invitation to burglars. Inform police of any suspicious characters who you consider to pose a threat.

Cable thief nabbed
A 39-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of suspected stolen property at Marathon informal settlement on Friday 10 October. While police were patrolling the area they noticed smoke near the entrance of Marathon. The police members tactically approached the place where they believed the fire to be located. They found a man there who was burning a pile of aluminium wire. Upon questioning him, the man was unable to give the officers a clear explanation of where he got the aluminium. The police expected foul play and the man was arrested for possession of suspected stolen property. The suspect appeared at Germiston Court and the matter was remanded for trial.
Shebeen closed down Primrose Police with the help of Germiston Cluster members arrested a female suspect aged 25 for dealing in liquor without a licence in Silvia Road. The police were conducting an operation in Primrose when they observed a group of people drinking on Silvia Road. The police could see them walking out of a house with liquor that they appeared to have bought there. Upon entering the house, the police found more people drinking around the house and buying liquor from a woman in the house. The police asked her for her liquor licence, but she was unable to produce it. They then arrested her and she was detained at Primrose Police Station.
House robbers caught Two suspects, both aged 22, were arrested by the Primrose police for two different cases of house-breaking and theft. The first suspect was arrested by the Primrose police on 9 October for a house robbery that took place at Serenade Street (Rustivia) in Primrose. The complainant alleged that he left his house at about 11:00 and everything was in order when he left . After coming back to his home he realised his house had been broken into and the following items were missing: an Ipad, female underwear, a Canon camera and his tools. Detectives followed the matter up and left no stone unturned. The accused was arrested and linked to the robbery. The second suspect was arrested by Primrose police for house-breaking and theft on Pretoria Road on 10 October. The complainant alleged that he left home in the morning in order to go to work. He received a call from his security company that the alarm at his house had gone off. He went back to his house to check on his property where he found a security officer and a suspect - the guard was caught stealing from the house. On inspecting the house, he noticed that a flat screen TV and clothes to the value of R2000 were missing. Police were called and arrived timeously and the suspect was handed to them. Both suspects appeared and matters were remanded for seven days for plea and trial.

Lexton Academy - the first remedial high school in the South Applications for Grades 8 and 9 are now open for 2015 at Lexton Academy ADHD and Remedial High School and Tutorial Centre, a new school that will be situated in New Redruth, Alberton. Gavin Palmer, founder of Lexton Academy, saw a massive increase in the need for small classes focussing on remedial ADHD learners. “There is no high school per se in the south catering for these children and the ones that are close by are very full,” Palmer told tame TIMES. He went on to explain that nearly 60% of Grade 7 learners, despite being fully eligible to attend high school, are not ready for mainstream studies. Under normal circumstances, after enrolling in a mainstream high school, these students learn that they must take remedial courses in English or Maths. The aim is to fill this gap and make the transformation that much easier for the learners. The school will follow the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) CAPS syllabus and will have 15 learners per class. Palmer explained, “We will focus on one-on-one learner attention which can’t be given in a normal class. We will be working on teaching the content, then building the foundation for exams and testing. This will build confidence in the learners. We will also be teaching at a slower pace to allow for better understanding for the learners.” Palmer added, “We believe in a stigma-
ADVERTORIAL
free learning environment where the learner can be themselves and can strive for their own excellence.” The subjects offered for Grades 8 and 9 are: English, Afrikaans, Mathematics, Economics and Management Sciences, Life Orientation, Technology/Computers, Arts and Culture, Natural Science and Biology, Social Science (Geography, History). Currently there are five educators that will teach next year. The staff count will grow as each phase comes in and school uniforms will be worn. “This is to teach self pride in appearance and is a huge part of personal and school discipline,” Palmer said. All extramurals and sport activities will be done through clubs and outside coaching. The school will also be providing aftercare at an additional cost to parents. If you would like to apply for admission for your child or would like more information, please mail admin@lexton. co.za or contact Gavin Palmer on 078 329 9732 or visit www.lexton.co.za.

PETS FEATURE
As warmer weather heralds the start of summer, animal-lovers know that fireworks season is not far off. Starting with Diwali in October and lasting right through to New Year, the festive season is also fireworks season. For people, fireworks are a fun way to celebrate holidays and balmy evenings outdoors, but it is a very different story for animals. All animals, including your beloved pets, have
a more acute sense of hearing than humans do, so every pop and bang may seem like an explosion to them, especially as they do not understand what is going on. It is no wonder that terrified pets will do just about anything to escape from fireworks or that the SPCA routinely sees a spike in admissions immediately after a night of celebration. While fireworks are legal in South Africa, strict by-laws govern their usage. The SPCA therefore encourages residents to familiarise themselves with the by-laws and to report any infringements to the SAPS. More specifically, the by-laws are clear about the fact that “no person may light or ignite fireworks in any place where animals are present” and that “no person may allow a minor under his or her control to use, light or ignite fireworks in contravention (of the by-laws).” In addition, fireworks may only be used in certain places with prior and written permission. These places include the interiors of buildings, agricultural holdings, public spaces, schools, hospitals and old age homes.

The SPCA suggests that animal lovers adopt the following measures to minimise distress on nights when fireworks are in use: Keep pets indoors and try to ensure that they have human companionship; If possible, close all windows, curtains and doors to block out the flashes of light and loud noises; Turn on the radio or TV to muffle the sound of the fireworks and choose a programme that does not feature loud music or startling sounds; Provide toys, treats or other distractions to help keep pets occupied; Speak to a vet about the medication and supplements available to manage anxiety caused by loud noises; Keep calm and do not fuss if pets become distressed, as this will only aggravate their anxiety; Ensure your pets are micro-chipped so that they can be traced if they do manage to get out and run away.
If you have lost a pet, please contact your nearest SPCA’s Lost and Found Department to report him or her missing. You should also phone all the vets in your area and the surrounding SPCAs, as you pet may have been taken to one of them.
In case of an emergency during fireworks season, residents can contact the nationwide emergency response service on 10111. The SPCA’s staff members are on standby at all times to accept strays at the SPCA.

The three tumblers were joined by Adrian Knoetze, who is an Artistic Gymnast as well. All boys were put in Level 3 with competitions starting in June. THE START: Runners preparing to start the Jozi South Half Marathon Lucky Mohale (Maxed Elite) and Deriocious Makhobalo (Nedbank Soweto) were victorious once again at the third tame TIMES Jozi Half Marathon - only this time they entered different races in the Senior Men’s category. This year Mohale won the 10km, which Makhobalo won last year; and Makhobalo won the 21km, which Mohale won last year. Lebo Phalula (Maxed Elite) won the senior women’s category in the 21km, with Kenyan-born Isabella Jepohumba (Nedbank Soweto) hot on her heels; but hats off to
Seipati Peo (Maxed Elite), who removed her running shoes at the 15km mark because they were hurting her, and ran the rest of the race barefoot, coming in third. “That is the first and the last time I run with no shoes on. It was very painful,” Peo told tame TIMES. Three-times Comrades Marathon winner and current record-holder for the Comrades downhill run (1989) Benoni-based Frith van der Merwe, ran the 10km and came first in the Master Women’s category. Van der Merwe said, “The race was lovely; the course was tougher than I expected. It was
VETERAN WINNER: Barbara Luckemeyer well organized and I will run it again.” Olympic gold medallist Lawrence Sizwe Ndlovu and the rest of his Team Seize team-mates, including Tshwane Suns Basketball player Neo Mothiba, did well to beat Team Showbiz, which was headed by Wonderboom frontman Cito. Thousands of runners competed in the two races in cool, comfortable weather. The half marathon took in Soccer City, Chris-Hani Baragwanath Taxi Rank and Southgate Mall, and split from the 10km course at around the 4km-mark.

Lions in the final against WP The Xerox Golden Lions made sure to book their place in the Absa Currie Cup Final with a six-try match, beating the Cell C Sharks with a score of 50-20 at Ellis Park on Saturday. The Lions went into the game more determined than ever and it showed on the field. They competely dominated the match from the beginning and the Sharks did not stand a chance on the Lions’ home ground. Throughout the Currie Cup season the Lions’ showed a dominant scrum, which contributed to making this one of the biggest semi-final wins in this competition in years. Jaco Kriel, the Currie Cup’s leading tryscorer this season, played an integral part in taking the game away from the Sharks. The Lions grew their confidence with a halftime score of 23-3 in favour of the home team. Even though the Sharks came into the second half more determined, the Lions would not give up on the final. The Sharks scored twice in three minutes, with Mtembu scoring a try and SP Marais scoring in the 71st minute. With nine minutes to go and the score at 33-20 behind, the Sharks was full of hope. But their hope was short-lived. The Lions ended the match with a victory and will face the DHL Western Province in the final on Saturday. It will be the first time
