SEVENS WEEKEND HISTORIC OCCASION: The Ekurhuleni Artisans & Skills Training Centre and A Square Forklift Alberton Rugby Club launched their partnership on Friday. On 20 February the Ekurhuleni Artisans & Skills Training Centre (EASTC) announced their partnership with the A Square Forklift Alberton Rugby Club, the day before the tame TIMES Alberton Sevens Rugby Tournament commenced. The EASTC is a practical training centre that focusses strongly on employment skills training in various fields. They equip the students with essential skills in

a workshop environment. For the Golden Lions Rugby Union, the education of the players is of paramount importance. After rugby players retire, they must have a career to continue with. Speaking at the launch, Mr Pereira from the Higher Education Department said this decade has been declared the decade of the artisan. Mr André Du Toit strongly agreed, saying artisan training provides skills TRADING HOURS:

He said that the declining numbers in rugby players is concerning, but the partnership will open doors for potential players - as it will enable the recognition of young players with no funding for further studies.

‘n Bek vol tande

musings {A note from the Editor}

This past week I’ve experienced again that I’m always exactly where I need to be at every point in my life. I went to the Alberton Business Forum’s first meeting of the year and was so inspired by the speaker, Mr Veli Ndaba. After that, I had

some bonding time with Loreen Fletcher at The Mad Platter, while doing their flavour which you can read about on Page 9. After my interview with the inspirational Mr Hans Du Plooy, I was convinced, this is going to be my year. The tame TIMES Alberton Sevens Tournament took place this weekend at the A Square Forklift Alberton Rugby Club. Again I had the opportunity to spend time with my colleagues, really getting to know some of them. It’s a privilege to hear people’s life stories, which is why we at tame TIMES invite each of our readers to share yours with us.

Alberton Damesklub getooi in rooi

Koste R140. navrae.

CREATE YOUR OWN Special thanks to Detective W/O Mgiba Alberton detectives are doing an outstanding job and Station Commander Colonel Kubone could not stop praising them after two men were convicted for business robbery and kidnapping. On 1 December 2012, two men aged between 25 and 35 robbed an Alberton businessman at his business of an undisclosed amount of cash and, while getting away after the robbery, kidnapped a taxi-driver before being arrested by the police. Detective W/O Mgiba, who was the investigating officer, opposed the bail

successfully and they were denied bail until their trial was finalised on 27 January 2015. The culprits were each sentenced to 22 years in prison. Colonel Kubone said Mgiba is one of the detective members that they are proud of at Alberton SAPS. Last year he received a certificate and cash reward from the National Commissioner for outstanding work. The Alberton SAPS are proud of Detective W/O Mgiba for making sure the community of Alberton is protected and can run their businesses freely.

Alberton SAPS spreading the love

ABOVE: Alberton SAPS spread love among each other on 13 February. Alberton Police Station Commander Colonel Kubone spread love to all Alberton SAPS members this month. On Friday 13 February, at a Valentine’s project held in the Alberton SAPS board room, all members bought presents and

exchanged them to show that they care for each other. Lunch was served to all members. The board room was filled with love and fun as members sang, prayed, hugged, exchanged gifts and enjoyed lunch together.

Alberton Business Forum hosted their first meeting of the year at Reading Country Club on 19 February. The theme was ‘’how to create your own luck’’ with guest speaker Veli Ndaba. Veli interested the attendees with his take on how luck is created when preparation and opportunities meet. According to Veli, opportunity is the constant - you must just identify it. The preparation is what takes work. In that sense, luck is not limited - it is all based on your preparedness to achieve. He explained to everyone how to set personal goals that will stretch them, leading to a much greater achievements. According to Veli, your mind is like soil. What you plant is what will come out. It is up to each individual to have any amount of knowledge

that they want. Veli’s book, ‘’You are Born to Win,” was launched on 22 February, his 43rd birthday. He had set himself a goal last year, that by his next birthday, his book would be launched. It just goes to show that success has nothing to do with age, race, gender, or background. It comes to those who go out and get it. The next meeting will take place on 19 March. For more information, contact Ronél Mellet on 083 459 7015 or admin@ albertonbusiness.co.za. For more information on the speaker and his book, contact him on veli@velindaba. co.za or visit his website: www.velindaba. co.za.

Soli deo Gloria.

You can still register for degrees and diplomas

Students who have not yet managed to secure a place at a public university can still realise their dreams of registering for tertiary studies this year. Boston City Campus & Business College announced on Monday that it would extend its registration deadline to accommodate these students, as it has extended registrations until Saturday 28 February. “It is rare for education institutions to move deadlines and extend registrations, but that is what Boston has decided to do at each of its 40-plus higher education support centres across South Africa,” says Ruan Venter, registrar of Boston City Campus & Business College. “We considered matters of capacity and other logistical factors and are pleased to announce that indeed we can throw a lifeline to those students that are still out there desperately trying to register for tertiary studies.” This application and registration extension applies to Boston’s higher education courses

such as the BCom in Management Marketing, Diploma in Business Management, Diploma in Financial Accounting; Diploma in Marketing Management; Diploma in Event Management; and Higher Certificate in HIV/Aids Counselling and Management. The extension also applies to the so-called gateway programmes; these are short learning programmes for those who do not have a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with endorsement. The four Boston Higher Education Gateway Short Learning programmes for which students can register until 28 February are: the Marketing Management Gateway Short Learning Programme; Event Management Gateway Short Learning Programme; Financial Accounting Gateway Short Learning Programme; and Media Studies Gateway Short Learning Programme. The speediest way to get the registration process going is to visit the college website at www.boston.co.za.

No stopping Tanya Stewart, a 16-year-old Grade 11 pupil at Impact Independent High School, has her heart set on studying medicine once she completes school. Being very aware that there are quotas at universities, she knew that she had to start doing something in that line of work to get in. So she has just completed a course called Bowen Therapy, a form of therapy that restores the function to the nervous system. She is the youngest person in South Africa - and possibly worldwide who has completed this course. The therapy is not yet well-known in South Africa, but there are already a few practitioners, with many more being trained by Sean Johnson in Randburg. Tanya now sees clients after school and on weekends, and also goes to old age homes to offer her skills. An organization called Headway has also approached her to do some community work.

On the website, students can get more information about the Boston courses and learning programmes on offer and click on the ‘apply-now’ button. “Our application administration staff are ready to process the applications that come in between now and the end of February,” explains Venter.

“If you’re unsure about what course to choose, our staff will take you through the different alternatives available and assist you in selecting the study option that is best suited to you.” You can register to study towards any of the above-mentioned qualifications on a part-time or full-time basis.

Wise or evil? A good or bad omen? For centuries, owls have been plagued by superstition. On the contrary, owls are also seen as wise – probably because Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, skill and war chose the owl to be her sacred animal. For most other cultures and nations through the centuries, however, owls are either bad omens or associated with something negative, evil or the occult. Owls are believed to consume newborns in Malaya, to dance on graves with witches in Madagascar and in Ireland were traditionally killed if they flew into a house, so that they could not leave and take the good luck from the home with them. According to traditional beliefs in New Mexico, the cries of owls announce the arrival of witches. In Scotland seeing an owl during the day is a bad omen and in Sweden owls are used by witches. For the Celts, the owl was a symbol of the underworld and for the Maoris and the residents of Iran it is unlucky. Strangely, in Transylvania, farmers had a habit in previous centuries of walking about naked to frighten off owls. In Peru, however, owls were boiled to make medicine and in Siberia they are

traditionally seen as helpful. Owl eggs were also used in England in days gone by to cure alcoholism. [www.owlpages. com] In South Africa, owls are traditionally associated with witchcraft. If an owl is seen in your yard, it is regarded as a bad omen. Despite this, however, owls are great for natural pest control and many residents are starting to see value in them. Barn owl programmes have been implemented in several townships i n c l u d i n g A l e x a n d r a by the City of Johannesburg, in conjunction with EcoSolutions. In 2012, owl nesting and release boxes in three schools in Alexandra – Zenzeleni Primary, Iphuteng Primary and Minerva Secondary. Called the Owl Box Project, the programme teaches local communities and schoolchildren about the important role owls play in eradicating rats. Like the Owl Box Project in Alexandra, many initiatives are being established not only to eradicate rodents but also to help society see the good side of the creature that remains elusive and mysterious.

CPF making a difference Four arrested for assault

Who and what is the CPF? The Community Police Forum (CPF) is a non-profit organization interacting between the community and SAPS, with its main aim being to enhance safety and security by proactively reducing crime. Fact: With only 2.5% of the community actively participating, crime statistics have been reduced since the inception of the CPF, but have not been eliminated. Are you going to be part of the solution? Or do you think it is not happening in your area? Join us in making a difference for the safety of your family and community. Commitment of the Lambton Klip Sector 4 CPF Unit: Areas covered by Lambton Klip Sector 4 CPF unit:  Lambton  Klippoortjie  Parkhill Gardens  Webber  Hazeldene  Hazelpark The Lambton Klip Sector 4 unit is committed to work hand in hand with the residents to challenge the crime-related issues in our area in a proactive way. A group of well-trained patrollers are roaming the streets on a voluntary basis day and night trying to make the area a safer place. Equipped with radios to communicate amongst themselves and assisted by various households that provide backup when necessary, they also wear an easily recognisable uniform so as to be visible to

the community. Although they are volunteers, they have been actively involved in apprehending criminals in the past and will carry on protecting the safety of the residents of the area. But we all need to do more….. You can help by:  Being proactive and assisting with the patrols where possible  Linking up to our radio network  Attending the monthly meetings every second Thursday of the month at Afrikaans High School Webber Road Lambton and staying informed  Reporting ALL crimes to SAPS We are appealing to business owners and community members in the area to become involved in joining hands to reduce crime, and donations of any kind would be highly appreciated to be used to fight this crime monster that has nested itself within and amongst us. Lambton Klip Sector 4 will be holding its yearly AGM at 19:00 on 12 March at Afrikaans High School Webber Road, Lambton The current chairperson Renee Germishuizen urges all residents to come and join the meeting and be part of seeking a solution for the crime problem in the area. Contact us: INFO Line 072 193 8496 e-mail: admin@lkcpf@co.za Also visit our website: www.lkcpf.co.za Please note that the CPF is NOT an armed response unit.

Four suspects were arrested for two different cases of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The first incident took place at Makause informal settlement. The complainant alleged that on the 15 February at about 19:00 she was at her house when her four-year-old came home crying and told her that a boy took his scooter toy. She went outside to check and found out that a seven-year-old boy was riding her son’s scooter and refused to give it back. He ran to his place crying and after a while his father, mother and aunt came to the complainant. The mother tried to hit her with a bottle, the father slapped her while the aunt hit her with a bottle, so police were called

and they were arrested. The second incident happened when the complainant alleged that he was at his shack with his girlfriend. His girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend arrived and started a fight but the complainant avoided him. The complainant then went to police station to report him. The ex-boyfriend found him at the police station complaining that the complainant had damaged his car while they were at the complainant’s shack. The matter was amicably solved but while outside the police station the accused started hitting the complainant with stones and open hands. The police came out and arrested the accused. All the suspects appeared at Germiston Court.

Failing to produce Housebreaker arrested in Primrose liquor licence Primrose police arrested a 32-year-old Primrose police warn the community to refrain from selling liquor without a licence. This came after a 27-year-old suspect was arrested on 14 February for dealing in liquor without a licence at Delport informal settlement. While police were patrolling in the area they noticed many people sitting and drinking alcohol. Police watched until they spotted liquor being bought. They then approached the suspect, introduced themselves and asked for a liquor licence. The accused could not provide one, so he was arrested and taken to Primrose SAPS for detention. Primrose SAPS is appealing to the community to be aware of how liquor is sold in the area, as there are many liquor-related issues in Primrose which disrupt the area.

Safety for seniors

Primrose SAPS Station Commander Mduduzi Khuzwayo accompanied CPF Chairperson Jan Lodewyk to address the senior citizens at an awareness campaign organised by Rest-a-while on 17 February. In his address the Station Commander gave the senior citizens safety tips and advised them how to avoid becoming victims of crime. Members of Primrose Crime Prevention Youth Desk entertained the senior citizens with a drama. The police vowed to keep on fighting crime so that citizens can stay in a safe environment.

suspect on 17 February. This happened after the complainant from Abelia Road in Primrose Hill visited the police and laid a charge. She alleged that she left her house in the morning to go to work and when she returned she saw the door was closed but not locked. When she went inside she noticed that her TV and new phone were missing. A detective followed up the leads and the accused was arrested and charged for house breaking and theft. The accused appeared at Germiston Court.

The Sport and Recreation Minister is already known for rubbing shoulders with celebrities such as US singer Brandy, but has now set his own bar higher after hooking up with rap mogul P Diddy. Mbalula attended the NBA All Star Weekend – an event that sees the likes of musicians Rihanna, Jay-Z and Beyoncé on the guest list. The Minister spent time with Floyd “Money” Mayweather and P Diddy, whose real name is Sean Combs, at the function, of which a splash of pictures was uploaded onto his Instagram account. SPORT GOES ONLINE Mind Sports South Africa invites learners to join the National Inter-High School eSports Online League, beginning in April 2015. The league involves contending through online games and will be played on Fridays, from April 3, with each round lasting two weeks. Each school will compete from its own computer room. The ‘eSport’ is carefully monitored, explained Colin Webster, MSSA spokesman. He said online umpires would be enlisted to check team computer equipment to ascertain that everything is in check and to monitor the games. Computer games for each championship are published on the MSSA website, with game-specific rules. Colin Webster, Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) spokesperson, explained MSSA was an affiliate of the International eSports Federation, Federation de Jeau du Mondiale, and the International Wargames Federation.

Due to its membership of such international bodies, the MSSA is the sole authority for the games that it caters for in terms of the Sport and Recreation Act, number 110 of 1998 (as amended). Schools wanting to participate must register with the MSSA. All entries must be submitted by 16 March. Webster explained the MSSA was responsible for the governance and promotion of historical figure games (also known as wargames), board games (such as Diplomacy, Checkers, Draughts, Morabaraba, Sport Stacking, etc), card gaming, robotics, and eSports (whether they are played on cell phones, Sony® PSP’s, personal computers or similar). Revved up and ready

The teams are revved up and ready for the 2015 season of the SA National Rally Championship. With just under two weeks left before the Tour Natal Rally – the opening round of the 2015 National Rally Championship - gets under way in Kwazulu-Natal, most of the top teams participating in this year’s competition are all

revved up, ready and raring to go. The season opener, on the fast loose gravel roads in the sugarcane farmlands of the South Coast, will also see the introduction of some interesting and exciting innovations for the national series. The event will start in Scottburgh on Friday 27 February. The Castrol Toyota team, which includes

defending champions Leeroy Poulter and Elvéne Coetzee, has not yet announced its line-up for 2015; but the Volkswagen Sasol racing team, runners-up in 2014, will again field a three-car team this year. Hans Weijs Jnr from the Netherlands, who finished second in the 2014 drivers’ championship and won the final rally of the year, and Belgian co-driver Björn Degandt will be rallying alongside the talented South Africans Henk Lategan and Barry White, who acquitted themselves well in the recent Monte Carlo Rally. Gugu Zulu and Pierre Arries will round out the team with Arries being recalled for co-driver duties after Carl Peskin, Zulu’s long-time navigator and multiple national championship winner, opted out because of business pressures. Ford will also be officially represented in this year’s championship, fielding a Fiesta S2000 for 2012 and 2013 national rally champions Mark Cronje and Robin Houghton. The Fiesta was recently upgraded and rebuilt by M-Sport in Britain. Since 2009 the pair has already netted 15 victories with the Fiesta, and this year they are determined to return to the kind of form which saw them dominate the 2013 season. The Ford onslaught will be strengthened by top privateer Japie van Niekerk in his New Africa Developments S2000 Fiesta – now with experienced UK-based navigator Gordon Noble sitting alongside him. Noble comes to South Africa on the back of consecutive wins in the final rounds of the

FIA Junior World Rally Championship which earned him and young driver Alastair Fischer second place overall in the series. He has also navigated for the likes of Niall McShea, Alastair McRae (the pair winning South Africa’s Zulu Rally in 2006 when it was a WRC candidate round) and Kris Meeke. The team’s Fiesta has meanwhile received a full mechanical make-over and been thoroughly refreshed by Thompson Racing. It will also get a vibrant new colour scheme for this season. In the S1600-class, ten entries have already been received, including those of the defending champions Guy Botterill and Simon Vacy-Lyle (Yato Tools Toyota Etios R2), and 2014 runners-up Paulus Franken and Henry Kohne (Manitou Group VW Polo). Five of the teams will contest the championship in S1600 Polo R2-cars, three in Ford Fiesta R2s and two teams in Toyota Etios R2s; while in the NRC2 class four entries have been received so far. The route for the 2015 Tour Natal will be quite similar to last year’s, with the first three stages after the start at the Scottburgh Country Club to be repeated – for a total of six stages on the first day. Another five special stages will be run on the fast loose gravel roads in the sugarcane farmlands of the South Coast on the second day, for a total of 11 stages over a distance of about 420 kilometres. Successful Sevens Weekend The second consecutive tame TIMES Alberton Sevens Rugby Tournament took place on 21 and 22 February at the A Square Forklift Aberton Rugby Club. In the 105th year of the Alberton Rugby Club’s existence, the Golden Lions sees the tournament as an excellent opportunity to showcase their Club talents and enjoy camaraderie. According to the Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor, Mondli Gungubele, when you play sport, you are assisting South Africa in its campaign to promote healthy lifestyles and ultimately healthy communities. ‘’At the end of the day, sport must be the winner,’’ the Mayor said in his message to the teams. The tournament was a resounding success, despite the unpleasant weather
