Metro cuts Rand Airport power supply Stephanie Conradie
stephanie.conradie@tametimes.co.za
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality recently apointed a new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) who has made it very apparent that she will be acting against companies not paying their municipal accounts. On 19 June the Ekurhuleni Council cut the power supply to Rand Airport. According to Ekurhuleni, the power was disconnected as a result of the Rand Airport’s account being in arrears.
Ekurhuleni also advised tame TIMES that no formal arrangement was captured on their system to pay off the outstanding debt. When tame TIMES arrived at the Rand Airport on 20 June, the power was still out, and the sound of generators was overpowering. All offices on the premises were affected by the outage. Rand Airport Manager Stuart Coetzee was unfortunately not available to comment on the situation. Clr Izak Berg (IRASA) said: “I am happy to see
the Metro is doing credit control, but it should be done throughout the Metro. The CFO should also start looking at illegal electricity connections across the Metro. I am however against credit control in strategic areas, such as hospitals, police stations, schools, airports and anywhere that puts lives in danger,” he continued. He also said that he hoped no lives were put in danger at the Rand Airport and that the control tower was not affected.

September 1965
A Note from the
By Annel Meyer
Dunamis Church Conference Joyce’s Hairdressers on the corner of Gerrit Maritz Street and Second Avenue had its windows cracked and scorched In the early morning of September 1965, a petrol tanker overturned in Second Avenue, corner of Andries Pretorius Street, spilling its load of petrol before exploding. The newspaper The Star termed it a ‘river of fire’. According to eye witnesses, the tanker went out of control when turning into Second Avenue and came to rest on the pavement. An estimated 20 000 litres of petrol ran down the street, streaming half a metre wide in places. The driver and his assistant escaped unhurt, but when a car crossed the stream of petrol, it is believed that the spark from the engine ignited the petrol. The driver of the car also escaped before his car went up in flames. The burning petrol, flaring up to ten metres high, raced up the street to the tanker and all the way down towards Gerrit Maritz Street, gutting another parked car. The tanker exploded with a deafening noise, cracking the windows of dozens of houses, melting the overhead wiring and traffic lights, also charring trees on the pavement. The house in whose yard the tanker lay was completely gutted. Stanley Payne, an employee of The Star, who lived in Alberton, raced to the scene to capture
unique photographs of the scene before the fire brigade arrived to put out the blaze. He remembered that the flames shot well above the roofs of the houses and the entire street was blanketed in dense black smoke. While the local fire brigade, assisted by Germiston’s fire fighters battled to control the raging fire, people ran from their houses in their pyjamas. No one was seriously hurt that day. In fact, Joyce’s Hairdressers on the corner of Gerrit Maritz Street had its windows cracked and scorched, but by 10:30 when the electricity was restored, clients began to arrive for their appointments – ‘business as usual’, The Star termed it. Mike’s Kitchen Alberton
New owners, new experience
“
…it’s family time.
Mike’s Kitchen in Alberton is now under new ownership and promises to live up to the Mike’s Kitchen brand and slogan “…it’s family time.” Mike’s Kitchen Alberton has been under new ownership since October 2013 and new owner Ferouz Gani, Managers Kabir Thakor and Edwin Dube and their new staff are looking forward to further their already strong relationship with Alberton residents. tame TIMES had the opportunity of experiencing this traditional restaurant and its home-styled offerings. We were treated to their two signature dishes - Eisbein and the Chicken and Ribs Combo with our choice of starch. We decided on their vegetable option with the combo, and chips with the Eisbein. The Eisbein, never smaller than 1kg, reminded us of a home- cooked Sunday afternoon meal. It was perfectly crispy outside and succulent and flavourful inside. The Ribs and Chicken Combo also did not disappoint. The ribs were deliciously saucy and we enjoyed them thoroughly, even licking our fingers. The chicken was well cooked, with the moisture locked inside. The fresh vegetables started us talking about how much we would love to eat them every day.
The experience came in high on our list of favourites. The promotions menu of the Alberton Mike’s Kitchen features a variety of specials which are well suited for the family. Sunday’s Full Meat & Seafood Carvery Buffet which comprises of a starter, carvery roast and dessert all at R130 per head or the Daily Lunch Specials at R49.99 are just a few examples of some of these family-priced good food offerings. They have an indoor kiddies’ playing area and also host kids’ parties and Mini chefs parties. And if you want to host any function on the Mike’s Kitchen exclusive deck/patio area, there will be no charge for venue hire. Mikes Kitchen Alberton is situated at Alberton Crossing Shopping Centre, Cnr. Ring Road West & Helston Avenue. Hidden Treasure Alberton is one of thirteen Hidden Treasure Charity shops nationwide and is run by Baptists in affiliation with Arise Ministries. The proceeds raised go to a nursery school with 140 children. These children are educated and fed, and salaries are paid to two teachers, a pastor, a cook and an assistant cook. The proceeds also buy more than 20 families groceries on a monthly basis. Donations from the community keep the shops running and are sold at affordable prices. Items sold include baby wear, men’s wear, shoes, books, CD’s, linens, blankets, pillows, prams, toys and more. “We need the help of the community to keep the shop running, so we ask everyone to donate household items that they no longer use or want,” said the shop supervisor Edel Schostar. “We will also collect items from your home if you can’t bring them to the shop,” she continued. Hidden Treasure Alberton is looking for Christian volunteers to help in the shop. For more information contact Edel Schostar on 082 778 8856 or 011 900 7078.

Wild West Showcase
WESTERN: The models in their Western attire. On Saturday 7 June, the students of Figures Modelling Agency in Alberton took to the stage once again for their Showcase and Graduation Show at the Brackenpark Hall. The theme of the show was: Cowboys and Cowgirls. Only the students outshone the stunning stage décor, with its Western-style saddles, real hay, bandanas and wooden fences. There were sheriffs with hats and cowgirls with tutus who strutted their stuff on the ramp and thoroughly enjoyed “shooting” the judges and the crowd of supporters. Tieghan Griffin-Coetzer, who will be attending the IMTA in New York in July this year, obtained 92%, being nominated the Top Scorer for her Grooming Course. The students most definitely added their own unique interpretation of the Wild West to the show. Well done to all those who took part – you brought the Wild West to the Far TOP SCORE: Tieghan Griffin-Coetzer East! obtained the top score of 92%.

My kinders was my grootste rolmodelle toe hulle nog klein was.
- My studentejare. - My eerste vakansie oorsee (verlede jaar in Japan- was beslis ‘n buitengewone ervaring!)
An angel in disguise Rethinking Juandri Kotze writes: Firstly we would just like to thank a wonderful, inspiring woman with a big heart. Cindy van der Watt is a remarkable, selfless woman who cares for others. It all started two years ago when Cindy was asked to donate R100 towards a charity. Her kind-heartedness drove her to do more and so she started the Shoe Box Project for the Siyabonga Children`s Home. The response was so positive that she was able to give each child two Christmas boxes filled with everyday necessities, sweets and a toy. Not only does Cindy make sure that each child receives two presents; she also hosts a Christmas party for them every year. After seeing the excitement and appreciation in the children’s eyes, she then arranged for a birthday present for each child on their birthday. She is now also hosting craft days for the kids.
On 7 June 2014, Cindy managed to put together a country day for one of her high school friends, Maritza, who was in a car accident about 7 years ago. Maritza had a great deal of pain and underwent surgery. Unfortunately the surgery was unsuccessful and resulted in Maritza having brain damage. So Cindy organized the country day to help Maritza`s mom (Magda Botha) to assist in contributing to the medical expenses. This remarkable woman really inspired me and I decided to share this with you. The world is not all bad. God has His angels on earth. It is people like Cindy who makes the world a better place and I am privileged enough to know her. Thank you, Cindy, for showing us that even where there is a struggle, you can still find happiness with a little bit of goodheartedness.
e-tolls
I will write to MEC Vadi and request a formal meeting with him to discuss the MEC’s change of heart “Reports that Gauteng Transport MEC, Ismail Vadi, has called for a second look into e-Tolls is a significant development in the DA’s fight against South African National Roads Agency Ltd’s (Sanral) gangster gantries,” Manny de Freitas MP, DA Shadow Minister of Transport, said. “I will write to MEC Vadi and request a formal meeting with him to discuss the MEC’s change of heart,” de Freitas added. He said the DA will request that the Transport Portfolio Committee, at its first meeting, place e-tolls and Vadi’s proposed second look thereof on the agenda. “Vadi’s concession that no alternative funding model was considered and that there is general dissatisfaction with the funding model confirms our calls and suspicions. It is also a refreshing break from the ANC’s tone-deaf party line on the issue. This matter needs to be brought before the committee as a matter of urgency. Before the elections, it was agreed that the committee should invite parties with alternative views on e-tolls, particularly organisations such as OUTA, to present them to the committee. With civil society, political parties, unions and now even members of the ANC and government calling for the reconsideration of e-tolls, it’s time the state listens and Parliament makes this a priority.”

Beating superbugs with copper Healthcare facilities across the globe are battling to come to grips with an increasing number of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs). HAIs are infections that are contracted in a healthcare facility within 48 hours of admission. We all know of someone who has entered a hospital or clinic for a small procedure only to spend many more days, or even weeks, fighting a life-threatening infection. In the USA alone, 2 million people per annum suffer from HAIs and 100,000 of them will die. That is more than the deaths caused by breast cancer, HIV/AIDS and car accidents combined. The numbers in South Africa are unknown, but it is estimated that between 10%- 25% of all people admitted to a healthcare facility in this country will contract an HAI. HAIs may be caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi and most commonly affect the urinary tract, respiratory tract, wounds and blood. Why are HAIs increasing globally? 80% of infections are spread by touch (Tierno 2001). It is estimated that about 37% of healthcare workers still do not wash their hands thoroughly and a contaminated hand will spread germs to the next seven surfaces touched (Barker 2004).
Until recently the most feared of these infections has been from a Methicillinresistant Staphylococcus Aureaus (MRSA), but years of antibiotic overuse have resulted in a morphed “superbug” responsible for infections that are now extremely difficult to treat. CR(Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae), a superbug which is usually spread by unwashed hands or contaminated instruments, can lurk undetected in a patient until just the right moment when the patient’s immune system is at its weakest. It can then transfer its resistance to other relatively innocuous bacteria, leaving new monsters in its wake. It is a known fact that bugs are building up resistance to antibiotics and Dr Daniel Uslan, an assistant clinical professor of infectious diseases at the University of California (UCLA) says: “We are fast approaching a post-antibiotic era when we have to say to families or patients, ‘I`m sorry we have nothing available to treat your infection’.” Yet there is one material that has been scientifically proven to kill bacteria and viruses on touch seven days a week, 24 hours a day and that is Antimicrobial Copper. Replacing items such as bedside tables, over bed tables, nurses’ call buttons, IV
Beating superbugs with copper stands etc. can reduce the bio-burden by up to 83%. No other material such as stainless steel, melamine, glass or silver-containing coatings comes even close. The Copper Development Association Africa (CDAA) has, through its members, installed antimicrobial copper touch surfaces in two hospitals in Limpopo; two operating tables have been placed in veterinary clinics and the touch surface tops of Dr Anton Scheeper`s
rooms in Alberton have been replaced. “The solution is clear and is internationally accepted and yet it remains a mystery as to why there is no response to telephone calls and e-mails when we try to arrange presentations to the hospital management of two major hospitals in Alberton” says Evert Swanepoel, Centre Director for the CDAA.

Hospitals should NOT ignore the FACTS Patient safety is in their hands OTHER INDUSTRIES
Are you aware that copper is anti-microbial? Minimise your patients risk. The facts Most nosocomial pathogens can persist on inanimate surfaces for weeks or even months. When microbes are exposed to copper surfaces, contact killing takes place at the rate of tens to hundreds of millions of bacterial cells within minutes. This means that usually no live micro-organisms can be recovered from copper surfaces after exposure.

Create a cleaner and safer environment for patients in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. It has been proven that 37% of healthcare workers do not wash their hands thoroughly, therefore, infection rates remain unacceptably high and more needs to be done to lower the risk of acquiring an infection in hospital and to improve patient safety.

Copper touch surfaces can reduce the risk of infection by as much as 80%. No other material comes close to this. Strategically placed copper surfaces are not only aesthetically pleasing, but are also a strong line of defence against microbes continually killing bacteria and never wearing out. Antimicrobial copper has been scientifically proven to be the most effective antimicrobial touch surface material and has sparked a global campaign advocating the use of these materials to combat infectious microbes in healthcare facilities.

PERMISSION TO SPEAK? By Nosipho Khulu
To my name, my origin to that very first grain Your screams are too loud for the soil to retain Sounds of my footsteps amplify your pain Each footstep sounds to the rythm of your name ‘76 the year of the blood rain Bleached from our memories like a blood stain If not in history books in the soil you’ll remain...In the soil you’ll remain We’re the lost generation going down memory lane To find our direction we follow a street in your name... Jogging our memories-in a quest to reclaim Who we are-we wear a T-shirt in your name We’re the generation it’s supposed to happen for With freedom in our hands but we still hold out for more? You lead us to the door now we must explore and live the freedom that you were fighting for! That you were fighting for... Now FREE! To speak Free to seek Truths once forbidden Wisdoms that remain hidden In my name, there is no longer shame In my skin no sin nor blame I speak the crude inconvenient truth the uncomfortable and uncouth I write what I like - words that carry the burden of youth So I carry the torch Speak words that violently scorch and kill...every social ill With fiery words I watch inequalities burn The uneducated learn I speak words -that cause pain to yield Words that build! as you once so bravely willed... I promise to never forget and always remember to protect and hold this freedom you died to gain...it wasn’t in vain I promise to peel back the pages of time Honor you; in song and rhyme To sing your praises in street corners and stages. These words on paper like iron ore... in a furnace fashioning the core Moulding a new generation Who will not rest; till our complete emancipation So as my pen strikes the page and burns through the margins in a impassioned rage These lines can not hold... these voices echoeing lessons, of the YOUNG and THE BOLD!

High speed chase on N3
EMPD officers and private security guards chased a Fiat sedan with false number-plates from Alberton on to the N3 at high speed on the afternoon of Thursday 12 June. The Alberton area had been dogged by a spate of house burglaries and when the Fiat sedan with suspicious-looking occupants was spotted by the Metro Police and CPS security officers, it took off. The law-enforcers gave chase and the Fiat was closed in on N3 North opposite the PPC cement factory. The EMPD Germiston Crime Prevention Unit members arrested three male suspects in their late thirties and took them to the Alberton police station. On searching the vehicle, law-enforcers found a bag with crowbars, bolt-cutters and screw- drivers. They also discovered that the car’s correct number-plate was superimposed by a false one with the last two letters changed. Investigations are underway to check if the trio can be linked to recent housebreakings in the Alberton area.
Performance & excellence award for EMPD officer Metro Police Officer (MPO) Gloria Mohlamunye Komane, a member of the EMPD Speed Unit, took home a coveted trophy, a certificate, a R2000 cheque, a Spar voucher to the value of R1,250 and a beach bag as part of her prize for winning the Performance & Excellence category of the 7th Annual Leadership for Women in Law Enforcement. The 2014 conference was held from 28 to 30 May at Gold Reef City, Johannesburg. This annual event is held under the auspices of Intelligence Transfer Centre (ITC), a company that is committed to promoting skills development and training throughout the continent by providing responsive and sustainable training interventions aiming at bridging the skills shortages and gaps in the working class.

On seeing the approaching police vehicle, the driver of the suspicious-looking vehicle sped off. Then the reservists chased the suspects and pulled them off the road. After searching the vehicle, the law-enforcers

On 19 June at 4:30, members of SAPS Brackendowns reported on duty for nightshift and stopped and searched a suspicous vehicle in Vaal Road. They found the driver to be in possession of drugs and a jungle knife. He turned out to be one of the two suspects arrested on 13 June.
don’t be a victim
1) Know that danger could exist and never forget it. 2) Admit to yourself that you could become a victim. 3) Be realistic about your limitations. Avoid places or situations that put you at risk. 4) Avoid establishing predictable activity patterns. 5) Have a plan. Know what you will do if a dangerous situation arises. 6) Be determined to remain calm. 7) Be suspicious. 8) When you leave work, concentrate on your surroundings; only relax when you are safe at home. 9) Trust your instincts and good judgement – common-sense is the best protection.

research conducted by Airports Company South Africa, 70% of the browsing traffic is on the IOS platform. The first phase of the app was therefore targeted at these user-platforms. Further improvements and additions to the current app can be downloaded via update notifications. The app is already available for download. Airports Company South Africa partnered with the Digital Solutions Group, University of Johannesburg faculty members and students in the IT- and engineering fields to present this new application. “The reality today is that the mobile device is something that will stay in aviation and will most probably become the predominant means of communicating with the passenger, but also giving a lot of the control back to the passenger. We actually control the journey; information around the journey and through that from checking yourself in, to following the process through the airport. In terms of the fast travel initiative, I think the South African aviation industry needs to embrace that we want to stay relevant in the world. The rest of the world is going self-service, and we want to make sure that we are not left behind. OR Tambo wants to maintain that standard,” concluded Andre Vermeulen, Acting Executive Airport Director.

On 12 June 2014, Airports Company South Africa launched its official Airports App. This free and user-friendly app was developed to assist travellers with navigating at airports, and allows passengers to make travel arrangements from their smart devices. The app is the first step towards an innovative, virtual airport service that will improve travel efficiency. “The objective of the app was to streamline and personalise the airport journey for passengers that are more empowered than ever before. We want to keep customers connected and we want to do it one step at a time. With this app we would like to connect the passenger to all information in our airport,” explained Airports Company South Africa Group Manager Customer Care, Claudia Ramsden. In addition to expediting airline and parking reservations, the app provides users with convenient tools to find shops and restaurants, airline, travel and traffic information, weather reports and customer care details. It will also assist passengers with planning alternative transport. Passengers travelling to Gauteng may synchronise with the Gautrain timetable as well. Currently, the app is downloadable on Apple IOS, Android and Blackberry devicesexcluding the Q and Z series. According to

being responsible for their family’s financial needs.” A crucial part of financial planning for women is taking out cover against significant life risks and unforeseen events. These include untimely death, disability as a result of an accident, or the diagnosis of a serious illness such as breast cancer. On the other hand, it is crucial to create wealth for yourself and plan for retirement. Statistics show that only 6% of South Africans can afford to retire without the financial assistance of children or grandchildren. Thus wealth creation and proper retirement planning are increasingly becoming the responsibility of women – especially if the aim is a dignified retirement. Although most of us would prefer to spend our hard-earned money on luxuries, the creation of wealth, after risk cover, should probably be an independent woman’s most important goal. One of the most popular ways in which the modern woman can safely create wealth is through products that outperform inflation.
“Remember, clued-up, independent women think ahead!”

Clued-up, independent women think ahead. In our fast-changing world, the modern woman constantly has to face an increasing range of opportunities, challenges and risks, regardless of where she lives, how many children she has, what she does for a living or how many degrees she holds. Just as she should use every opportunity to plan for her own future, she should also consider the important role she plays in planning for the future of her family. Women form an integral part of the South African economy and for this reason should be involved in every aspect of financial planning – starting with their own families. “The world we live in is as unpredictable as our own life events. Keeping one’s fingers crossed and hoping for the best is no longer good enough. Women should realise how important it is to plan ahead – for retirement, unforeseen serious illnesses, the death of a spouse, divorce, accidents, even periods of unemployment. Zuma’s speech: too many promises, too little detail
Lest we forget
By Palesa President Zuma delivered his second State of the Nation Address this year the day after Youth Day, but said very little about the main problem facing the young people of this country: unemployment. His mention of the Youth Employment Accord and a vague promise to “prioritise” youth empowerment in “our economic transformation programme” will do little to pacify the Beret Brigade, and the Honourable Malema will certainly not lose a single minute of sleep over the Honourable Zuma’s commitment on the part of government to “investigate the possibility of a national minimum wage.” The President’s speech-writer did well, however, to begin with the subject of Marikana. In this regard, the plan to “revitalise mining towns” is long overdue. Had government tackled this burning issue in earnest before August 2012, it might have gone some way to averting the Marikana massacre and the crippling strikes that have followed it. Anyone who has visited the area will know that the riches underground hardly match the living conditions of miners who reside in shacks without services, or neglected townships with dirt roads and dilapidated houses. Nevertheless, a promise in Parliament is just that – it has still to be implemented. The Energy Security Cabinet Subcommittee, which seems to be government’s solution to load shedding, is also not likely to inspire confidence in the private sector, which may be forced to engage in job shedding if serious power outages make a habit of spoiling supermarkets’ frozen goods and stopping restaurants, hairdressers and other businesses from operating. Citizens’ confidence in government’s ability to perform is not strong enough for them to accept that, if the President said it, it will happen. The President needs to spell out concrete, measurable, realistic implementation details with deadlines in order to restore the nation’s trust in government’s ability to do service delivery. Promises to revitalise local government, to fix Joburg’s billing system, to eradicate the bucket system, to increase university passes, to implement a reliable and caring National Health Insurance system, to deal with crime and corruption to the tune of R30bn a year have all been heard before from government. Although South African voters still support the ANC, we have service delivery protests in our country about every second day. Most citizens, therefore, would probably have preferred him to give us a plan of action on Tuesday rather than a list of promises.
YOUTH OF 2014: [left] 26-year-old Tumelo Motaung, who believes there should be more “emphasis on civic education on Youth Day” and [right] 22-year-old Sifiso Mtimunye, who enjoyed “hearing from the horse’s mouth,” pose in front of some of David Turnley’s photographs. Thursday 13 June 2013 was the fiftieth anniversary of the day seven political prisoners, including one Nelson Rolihlala Mandela, landed on Robben Island on a cold, wet winter’s day to begin their decades-long prison sentences. The Nelson Mandela Foundation Houghton marked the occasion with a ceremony by the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation Youth Leadership Programme held at their premises in Houghton. Since June is Youth Month in South Africa, pupils from various schools were invited to the event. Over tea and coffee, they mingled with journalists and studied the works of
Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist David Turnley displayed in the foyer. This photographic history of the “struggle” included pictures of a strikingly beautiful young Winnie Mandela, black South Africans being beaten by a white police-officer and the very symbolic picture of a white schoolboy lounging on a bench while two black women, who at the time were prohibited by law from sitting on that bench, walk past. There was also a terrifying aerial shot of a “sellout” about to be “necklaced” – a man with a tyre around his neck surrounded by an angry crowd dragging him to a horrible, fiery death.
Palesa 011 862 8500
The programme of the day included the reading of Madiba’s famous trial speech by Sello Maake KaNcube and a speech by Walter Sisulu’s grandson Shaka Sisulu. Mr Sisulu explained how his grandfather, Uncle Kathy (Ahmed Kathrada) and the other Rivonia triallists were tried because of their plans to sabotage government institutions. He described their relief at receiving lifesentences instead of being hanged, ascribing this to international pressure exerted on the apartheid government at the time. He urged the youth of 2014 to stand up for their beliefs, no matter what the cost. Then there was an opportunity to hear about conditions on the Island from former Robben Island in-mate Ahmed Kathrada. He described how prisoners were detained for 90 days with no visitors except police, who threatened them with death; how the single white Rivonia triallist was not sent to Robben Island but imprisoned elsewhere; how black prisoners wore short pants and the others were given long trousers; how he, as an Indian, received bread every morning, but Madiba had to wait ten years to be given his first slice of bread in prison. Uncle Kathy also described how prisoners with education taught those without, despite enduring harsh prison conditions and working eight hours a day with a pick and shovel; and encouraged today’s youth to make the most of the education they receive. The ANC may be a little too fond of its anniversaries, but this was one worth remembering.
No work, no future for 36% of SA youth
By Palesa
Almost 3 million South Africans between the ages of 18 and 24 are not in employment, education or training. One-third of our young men are jobless and almost 40% of our young women are unemployed. And the situation is becoming worse, not better. Youth unemployment according to the official figures from Statistics South Africa - was 32,7% in 2008, but is now 36,1%. This means that over a third of South Africans between the ages of 15 and 34 have no income, no careers and very little, if any, work experience. Their lives are on hold. Unless they are fortunate enough to find the financial sponsorship to do so, they cannot marry, buy houses or study. They also cannot pay tax or save for retirement. Many manage to subsist by sharing a grandmother’s pension or a child’s social grant. As a result, South Africa has a huge and dangerous imbalance between taxconsumers and tax-payers. We have about 16 million recipients of social grants but only about 5 million payers of tax. This is not financially sustainable, especially as the current population ages and today’s taxpayers retire from their jobs and become
pensioners. The situation is also not socially sustainable, especially as the numbers of long-term unemployed youth grow. According to the latest figures released by the StatisticianGeneral, almost half the youth in Free State are out of work and nearly two-thirds of 20- to 24-year-olds are in long-term unemployment. These are people with all the hope, energy and ambition of youth but no future. When neighbours return from work, they are still sitting on their parents’ sofas; while others drive past in cars, they are wearing holes in dusty street corners. Theirs is a twilight existence, one that makes them feel marginalized, unworthy and unwanted. The tragedy is that government has been vocal about promising jobs since 2004, raising hopes and aspirations but delivering little apart from an increase in civil service jobs and short-term Expanded Public Works Programme job opportunities that burden the tax-payer. South Africa has a serious shortage of skills but an education system that is one of the worst in the world, especially in job-friendly subjects like mathematics and science. Most of our artisans are fifty-something, but we currently produce only 3000 a year in place
BLEAK FUTURE: 36% of South Africa’s youth are jobless. of the 30 000 previously produced every year under the old apprentice system. Still, government – and even some members of the opposition – promise to create jobs even though it is universally acknowledged by economists that governments are unable to increase permanent, sustainable jobs and can do no more than to create a businessfriendly environment for the private sector to do so.

New biking and running club A new mountain bike and trail running club, Thaba Trails Club, is being officially launched in the south of Johannesburg in June. Thaba Trails Club will offer advice, coaching and company to all levels of athletes and cyclists. Thaba Trails Club will be based at Thaba Ya Batswana, an eco hotel and conferencing venue set against the backdrop of the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve - a scenic 680 ha sanctuary located just 10 km from Johannesburg that features breathtaking landscapes and a wide diversity of wildlife. Thaba Trails Club owner, Wendell Bole, reveals that the club was established after several requests by residents in the area for a mountain bike club to be opened. “Over the past seven years I have had a number of requests to start a club here. In the past I was reluctant to go ahead with the project as I believed that there were other clubs in the area that should be supported. However, it has become evident that few of these clubs cater for mountain biking, and there are no clubs that provide for beginners,” he explained. There are two distinct categories to the club, namely mountain biking and trail running; however, Bole stressed that members will not be restricted to these two disciplines. “The mountain bikers will be participating in road racing as well as track cycling, and the
athletes will also take part in road and track races. We are hoping the different disciplines will support each other.” Members of the club will also enjoy numerous perks, including discounts at nearby cycle shop, The Cycle Hub and special annual Club access fees to Thaba Trails and the Rietvlei Cycle Park. Members will also enjoy discounted insurance prices from the club’s insurance broker, Cyclesure and be encouraged to join Helivac Medical Emergency services at greatly reduced club prices. Bole noted that the Thaba Trails Club will cater for mountain bikers and trail runners of different abilities. “There will be race snakes aiming for Provincial and ACTIVE: A mountain biker at Thaba Trails Club South of National Honours, but there Johannesburg. will also be races for those For more information on the Thaba Trails who want to take part for personal reasons. Club contact Wendell Bole at bole@icon. We will encourage everyone to reach their co.za.Twitter: @thabatrails. Website: own goals,” he concludes. www.thabatrailsclub.co.za
Spar Proteas mow down the Scots
South Africa’s SPAR Proteas made an auspicious start to the three-Test series against Scotland’s Thistles with an emphatic 56-29 win in the first match at the Bellville Velodrome, in Cape Town, on Thursday evening. The Scots, who are ranked 12th in the world, went into the first Test on the back of several giant-killing feats in recent months when they recorded wins over higher-ranked teams such as Wales (8), Trinidad & Tobago (10) and Northern Ireland (11). However, the Proteas’ class proved a tad too much for the Thistles who were left chasing the game when the half-time break dawned. At the start, turn-overs and interceptions came thick and fast as both made nervous starts. The Proteas seemed to settle down sooner but the Thistles’ defence stood firm, allowing the visitors to go toe-to-toe with their SA hosts in the opening quarter. Midway through this passage of the game, the Proteas held a slight 5-4 lead after the Scots managed to close down the spaces effectively by contesting fiercely. Lesley MacDonald, Scotland captain and most experienced player, suffered an eighth-
minute injury and needed first-aid attention. This seemed a cue for the Proteas to step up their game and they closed out the first quarter strongly with a 13-5 advantage. Chrisna van Zyl thrived on the excellent service and was responsible for the bulk of the Proteas’ tally with countless scoring shots from all different ranges in the circle. By the time the half-time whistle sounded the Proteas had advanced the score-line from 13-5 to 26-12, giving them a massive 14-goal lead. Both sides made changes during the break and the fresh personnel seemed to take time to fit into their sides’ playing patterns. Scotland varied their strategy midway through the third quarter and managed a few goals, although they never threatened the Proteas’ lead. Scotland tried to shore up their defence with a change for the final quarter’s play. The Proteas also brought on fresh legs and the Scots found the new energy was too hard to contain. The fourth quarter turned out to be the Proteas’ most prolific passage of play as they re-
sponded with two goals every time the Scots managed to breach their defence. There was no let-up by the Proteas at the death as they rounded off a superb first Test performance with a runaway 56-29 win.

Alberton runners to take on 161km race On 11 July the Alberton Amateur Athletic Club will be the only full team from Gauteng to compete in the premier 100 mile race in South Africa – The Washie 100. This event is the second oldest 100-miler in the world, with only the Western States 100-miler in the USA being an older event. This race is considered as the Ultimate Race in South Africa for the 100-miler runner, a race affectionately known as the ‘Road to Hell’ This year Alberton Amateur Athletic Club will have three representatives who will be tackling this monumental 161km race: Johan van Tonder, Gavin Pansegrouw and Shane van Damme. The race will start at 17:00 on 11 July and the cutoff time is 19:00 on 12 July. Johan is aiming to complete the race withing 14-15 hours, Gavin set a time of 16-17 hours and Shane is aiming to come in under 20 hours. Based on past performances and current conditioning, the club believes that these runners will be very strong contenders for the overall team prize, as well as being serious individual contenders. This race is an unsupported race, meaning that each participant must take a crew with them to support them
along this route from Port Alfred to East London. The runners are now searching for any kind of sponsorship or donations to enable them to compete in this year’s Washie 100 and to make Alberton proud. Contact Chairman Andries Venter on 083 727 2970 for more information.
