SAPS WOMEN’S NETWORK LENDS A HAND
GERMISTON CLUSTER: CRIME PREVENTION Germiston Cluster recently manned a roadblock on the N3 where more than 200 cars were searched. Police also handed out pamphlets with safety tips. The cluster commander Brigadier Mdlankomo, and Alberton Station Commander Colonel Kubone thanked everyone who participated, as well as motorists - for their patience. Sgt Mgedezi of Alberton SAPS and Alberton Victim Support personnel visited Alberton Squatter Camp to find out more about their social problems and used the opportunity to hand out Easter eggs. They shared jokes and discussed social problems the police need to attend to, such

as domestic violence. The community was happy to work with the police and Sgt Mgedezi will be visiting them on a regular basis. Last week the Germiston Cluster visited Alberton scrapyards as part of their second-hand goods operation, which involves issuing fines to those who do not comply with the rules and making arrests for serious contraventions. In order to operate legally, all second-hand shop owners need to apply for a certificate at the police station, where Sgt Mukosi of Alberton SAPS will be happy to assist them.
The SAPS Women’s Network are concerned about xenophobia. On 22 April, they visited the refugee camp at Elsburg to lend a helping hand. They worked in the camp for an hour before they went to the Alberton Squatter Camp to
check in on foreign nationals, where they handed out food, fruit, soup and bread donated by Apple Tree Alberton. They also gathered clothing which they handed out. No incidents have been reported in the area.

Alberton SAPS is proud of Detective Sgt SN Mokoena for her commitment in making Alberton a safer place. She recently secured the imprisonment of six house-breakers, each for five years. ‘’That is good work and we thank you for your efforts and contribution in the fight against crime; we value your work as it shows consistency in what you are doing,’’ Station Commander Colonel Kubone said.

Finally deciding on a name is not the end of the naming process, however, as the child still needs to be registered with the Department of Home Affairs. The sooner this is done, the better. Registering the baby within 30 days of his birth is ideal. If for some reason you cannot complete the registration within 30 days of the birth, though, all is not lost. One can still register a baby with Home Affairs if the baby is older than 30 days. In such cases, additional information will be required from the parents. Examples of such cases explained on their website are: • Registration after 30 days, but before one year. • Registration after one year, but before the age of 15. • Registration after the age of 15 years. • Children born outside of South Africa.

Hy het afgesluit met sy bekende treffer, Lig op die Horizon wat sy eerste liedjie was om lugtyd op die radio te kry. Jacques het ook aan die gehoor verduidelik hoe hy met sy verhoog naam Joshua na die reën op gekom het. Sy inspirasie kom vanuit die Bybel, in Joshua 6 vers 20 toe Joshua die mure van Jericho afgebreek het, Jacques voel dat sy musiek kragtig genoeg is om mure tussen mense af te breek. Jacques glo dat mense kan groei deur musiek en dit is waar na die reën vandaan kom. Guests were treated to traditional Portuguese food at the pre-opening of the Lusito Land Festival The Lusito Land Festival is 16 years away from its 50th anniversary – an amazing feat that all started from humble beginnings 34 years ago. The celebrate yet another year, the Lusito Land Association hosted the festival’s preopening night on Thursday 23 April at the festival grounds in La Rochelle. The preopening was attended by family and friends of the Lusito Association for the Physically and Mentally Challenged as well as the sponsors and the festival. “Here we are again ... after 34 years, the Lusito Land Festival has kept on going,” said the MC in the opening of the event. Having first opened its doors in 1981 as a festival that
celebrated the Portuguese tradition and culture, over the years it has evolved into a festival celebrated by the many cultures that make up Johannesburg and Gauteng. More importantly, the festival raises much needed and appreciated funds for the Lusito Land School. “The main reason of the festival is to raise funds for the school,” said Chairman of the Lusito Association for the Physically and Mentally Challenged, Sergio Aquino. “People don’t fully grasp the impact that the festival and its funds have on the school,” he added. Aquino noted that the Lusito Land Association aims to be as transparent as possible in the public’s eye. “I am humbled and honoured to once again be a part of

The Lusito Land Association welcomes all to the festival this year and would like to thank all of its sponsors – without them, this festival wouldn’t exist.

This comes as the result of thousands of public votes, and the public can now support their favourite out of the eight finalists by visiting www.kickoff.com for a final round of voting.
