Local songbirds shine INSIDE in international movie N12 crash: members. She did, however, know of another woman with a good voice in Heidelberg, and contacted her as well, finally assembling a choir consisting of herself, her two sisters Veronica Labuschagne and Denise de Wet, and Tonni Kaasjager and Rita Gerritsen. “The first challenge,” she told tame TIMES, “was that Eduan said he wanted us to sing a slow, boring Afrikaans song like a ‘begrafnis’ song in Afrikaans for the ‘audition.’ We practised so hard and tried to remember the words but when we stepped into an empty swimming pool where the recording was done and the lights were on us, everything that could go wrong went wrong,” said Reneta. “We could not hear the recording we did earlier so they decided not to use the tape. We didn’t all start singing at the same time and we had to start over and were stopped again, and then started all over again. We even forgot the lines of the song. We were all so disappointed with our song only to be told that the movie was a comedy and the producers were happy with it. It was all fun and games after that,” she laughed. The ladies found it very exciting to be on a movie set. When asked if they would do it again, Reneta said that they most definitely would – just for the fun of it. The film will be released on 28 November in SA and had its world premiere in Seattle earlier this year.
SOUTH AFRICANS SHINE: The local choir that appeared in Leading Lady The upcoming film, Leading Lady, includes international movie-stars Gil Bellows and Katie McGrath alongside local actors Brumilda van Rensburg and Bok van Blerk. The film also includes a wonderfully entertaining choir made up of five ladies, one being an Alberton resident, Reneta Oosthuizen from New Redruth, who told tame TIMES the great story behind her chance to sing in the movie. The line producer, Eduan van Jaarsveld, phoned the Alberton Methodist Church, where Reneta works as a Financial
Secretary. It just so happened that Reneta answered the switchboard phone on that day and when he asked if the church had a choir, she said, “I said ‘yes we have a worship team,’ thinking that he wanted to attend a service here or maybe use our facilities for the movie he was talking about.” It was only when he mentioned that the choir he was looking for must consist of five to six ladies aged between 40 and 100 years old, that Reneta thought of the choir they used to have for the early morning services. She started phoning the former choir members, but could locate only three of the former

N12 crash: driver applies for bail On Wednesday 22 October, Isaac Maruding’s new legal representative, Advocate Mokhele Salemane, presented the 44-year-old truck driver’s bail application to Magistrate Hlubi at Palm Ridge Court. The charge against him has now been changed to three counts of culpable homicide and one count of reckless and negligent driving, as the details of one of the deceased could not be confirmed. The charge, however, could change again at a later stage. State Advocate John Ntuli called the first state witness, W/O Phokungwane from Alberton SAPS, to the stand. Officer Phokungwane is the investigating officer for the horror crash that claimed three confirmed lives, left seven people critically injured and 19 people with minor injuries on 14 October on the N12 East near Voortrekker Road, Alberton. He also arrested Maruding in Potchefstroom on 15 October.
According to Officer Phokungwane and State Advocate Ntuli, the accused should stay in custody because, if he is released on early bail, he could be a danger to society. The state also cited the fact that the accused fled the accident scene and did not report the accident to the SAPS. “It was his duty to report the accident, but instead he left Gauteng and fled to another province,” Advocate Ntuli said. He went on to say that an early release on bail for Maruding would not instil confidence in the South African justice system. “The court must protect the public at large, and we must take the seriousness of the case into consideration,” Adv Ntuli said. New defence Advocate Salemane read the accused’s affidavit in court and said that the accused said he will stay with his wife and children, and will not be a danger to the public. The accused intends to plead not guilty and has said he will prove he did not cause the
accident by negligent driving. The truck from Benusi Cargo Carriers has been inspected by experts, and lawenforcers are expecting a statement from experts soon. During Officer Phokungwane’s crossexamination by the defence’s Advocate Salemane, he stated that the post-mortem reports of the deceased were not available to the court and that the only information available was from statements made by paramedics on the scene, which, according to Salemane, is secondary information. The defence advocate went on to say that if the accused is kept in custody he will not be able to maintain his wife and children. In the accused’s affidavit he apologized to the families of the deceased and the injured. The case was postponed until Monday 27 October and at the time of printing the judgement had not yet been announced. An update has been posted on the tame TIMES website.

LovCaSh reaching Akeso Alberton out to the needy launches new look On Sunday 19 October, the Stepping Stone hospice received a great donation from Heal Humanity: A Love, Care and Share (LovCaSh) Initiative founded by Prof. Shikha Vyas-Doorgapersad. They donated a double bed set and carpets. Recently St Mary’s Children’s Home received several boxes containing clothes, shoes, toiletries, books and toys. LovCaSh would like to thank the Alberton community members for assisting in charity the work. Prof. Shikha is grateful to community members for their significant contribution. The LovCaSh Initiative aims to provide needy families or organizations seeking assistance. Through the help of local businesses, community members, and friends, charity initiatives become a reality for the less fortunate members of the community. LovCaSh is now in a process of collecting summer clothes and reading books. Anyone who wish to make a contribution, contact

On 22 October Akeso Alberton Clinic hosted a cocktail function to launch their newly renovated clinic. Akeso offers specialised private inpatient care to patients requiring treatment for psychiatric conditions. The Alberton Akeso Clinic has nine psychiatrists and six phycologists onsite. They have 75 beds divided in the general ward, duel-diagnosis ward and the young adults ward. The clinic also has an art room for art therapy and a gym. The clinic is equipped for persons with any disability and recently added a guide dog to accommodate a blind patient. At the launch Mr Allan Sweidan, CEO of Akeso, said that they look forward to growing with the Alberton community. Maggie Oberholzer, Hospital Manager said:
“We are focussed on helping the community and to be more involved with schools and other community initiatives.” Akeso was the mythological goddess of healing and curing. Unlike her sister Panacea, Akeso believed that healing involved a process, rather than a magical, elusive cure-all. At the Akeso clinics, you can expect to experience both safety and comfort, whilst being cared for by experts in the field of mental health. Akeso Alberton has a 24 hour emergency unit and Psychiatric Crisis Centre, you can contact them on 0861 43 57 87. They offer support groups on Tuesdays and Wednesday, for more information on group sessions contact 011 907 2811. They are situated at 15 Clinton Street, New Redruth, Alberton.
Be cancer aware
Imagine the shock of finding a lump in your breast at the very young age of 15 years old? Alberton resident, Julia Shabalala’s world came crashing down. Was it cancer? Would she survive this? After much testing, she was delighted to find out that it was just a fibroadenoma, a mobile, benign breast lump. And for nine whole years, Julia believed she had dodged a bullet. At the age of 24, Julia was diagnosed with HER2-positive breast cancer. With this form of the disease, the breast cancer cells in the body have a higher than normal level of this HER2 receptor, which causes the cells to divide, multiply and grow more rapidly than normal. Julia knew all she needed to know about breast cancer, but unfortunately, she knew nothing about what her HER2-positive diagnosis meant and how it would impact her treatment and outcome. Be Cancer Aware, a cancer information platform, is encouraging the public to think beyond pink and ask the right questions, get the correct diagnosis, tests and treatment for their particular cancer. Thank you to all book-lovers ‘’Friends-of-the-Brackenhurst Library-Committee’’ writes:
We want to thank all the kind and generous people of this area who have supported us over the past few years by donating a wide variety of their used books. Where possible, these are passed on to the Library or sorted, categorised and inexpensively priced – ready for resale in the foyer. Absolutely all proceeds of these sales are used to purchase additional, recently published books for the Library – ranging from current affairs to novels, children’s books to those with large print, and many more – thus greatly improving the wide selection of books available at our Library. Your efforts and generosity are indeed greatly appreciated by all the readers (young and old) of our Library and we look forward to your continued support in ‘’recycling your ‘preloved’ books’’! To help inspire ‘’a love for books and knowledge,’’ we wish to remind all parents of our Saturday morning ‘’story-reading-time’’ from 10:00 to 11:30.
Op my koffietafel lê daar ‘n boek met die titel: “Greatest Stories of the Bible”.

Hanta Schutte skryf: Die lied “Till the White Rose blooms Again” het mens sommer diep in jou hart geroer.

Nuno’s Take-Aways was founded by a Portuguese couple from Lisbon who travelled through Africa and settled in Alberton, starting a convenience store in New Redruth which they expanded soon afterwards, creating Nuno’s Take-Aways. In 2006, Kerry Clifford bought the take-away shop from the couple and added to their traditional Portuguese menu. Last week tame TIMES enjoyed some Nuno’s specialities, such as their delicious Chicken Mayo Sandwich; their tasty Chicken, Cheese & Pineapple Burger; their satisfying Chicken Salad and their succulent Lemon Butter Hake & Salad. According to existing clients, Nuno’s also have the best chips in town, made in-house from fresh potatoes. The great thing about the menu is that they accommodate healthier options such as lowfat mayonnaise, wholewheat bread and grilled options, instead of fried. The menu includes
all traditional Portuguese options such as Trinchado, Chorizo, Prego rolls, burgers and seafood. Nuno’s also offers platters on request. Choose from their wide variety of platter options or create your own. To add to their exceptional service, they deliver in close proximity to the shop, they have a mobile credit machine and delivery is free if you order food for more than R40. Look for Nuno’s on the Appetite app for smartphones. If you place your order via the app, you will be notified when your food is ready and then you just need to pick it up from the shop. Nuno’s can be found on the corner of St Aubyn and Fore Street, New Redruth. They are open Monday – Thursday 09:00 – 14:30 and 15:30 – 19:30. Fridays from 09:00 – 20:30 and Saturdays from 09:00 – 19:30. They are closed on Sundays and Public Holidays.

Crime
Cops resist bribe Fake cops throw victim out of car
The Sunday before last a pedestrian walking along Pretoria Road in Germiston was pulled into a car by fake police officers and robbed of his valuables. The victim alleges that his ordeal began when a car with two men inside it stopped near him. The men informed him that they were police officers and needed to take him to the police station for questioning. One of the men pushed the innocent pedestrian into their vehicle and then ordered him to hand over all his valuables. The passenger suspect became impatient
with their victim and started searching him, taking R320 and his cellphone. The victim noticed that his robbers had left an iPhone on the dashboard and, wanting revenge, grabbed it and threw it out the window. Enraged by this, the suspects then grabbed the victim and threw him out of the moving car. After detectives followed up on the leads provided by the victim, one suspect was arrested and detained at Primrose SAPS. He will appear at Germiston Court soon.
Warning - black GTI/ Silver Audi Moffatview SAPS management would like to warn the members of the public about a black GTI and a Silver Audi with four black males who are armed and in police uniform. These two cars do not have registration numbers and the four suspects pretending to be policemen are robbing people.
Girlfriend burns house down Primrose police arrested a 25-year-old woman for arson at Marathon informal settlement on 20 October. The complainant alleged that he was sleeping with his girlfriend at about 21:00 when he heard people screaming that his shack was on fire. He and his girlfriend ran outside and realized that his brother’s shack was also on fire.
An informer told him that he had seen his brother’s girlfriend setting fire to their shack. Detectives followed up the case and two days later the suspect was arrested and detained at Primrose SAPS. The police are appealing to the community to seek help with relationship problems and not to commit crime for the sake of revenge.
Business meeting murder suspect caught Primrose police arrested a suspect aged 30 for a murder that happened on January 2014 in Malvern East. It is alleged that the suspect shot someone with whom he had a business matter to discuss at the corner of Park and Geldenhuis Roads. According to the witness the deceased and the suspect agreed to meet and discuss business matters and when the meeting
went sour, the accused shot the deceased and vanished. Detectives followed the leads and received information that the suspect had been arrested in Brackendowns for truck jacking and would appear at Palm Ridge Court on Thursday 16 October. Police waited there and arrested him for the murder. The suspect appeared at court and the matter was remanded for trial without bail.
BRIBERY & DRUGS: The two arrested foreigners Two foreign nationals, aged 34 and 37 years old, were arrested on Monday 20 October for possession of drugs, dealing in drugs, bribery, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. The suspects were caught after a suspiciouslooking vehicle was stopped on the R554 at Leondale, and police searched the vehicle, finding Tik with a street value of R120 000. When the suspects tried to bribe the officers,
another charge was added to their rap sheet. After realizing that the officers would not accept the bribe, they began to assault them. Although the suspects resisted arrest, the officers managed to apprehend them. Two cellphones and money were also confiscated. At a later stage, another 47-year-old suspect was arrested for dealing in liquor without a license. All the suspects will appear at the Palm Ridge Court.
Primrose police, with the help of a Provincial Organized Crime team, arrested a 32-year-old suspect for theft of copper and unwrought precious metals at Rappa Holding Mine. Members from the Provincial Organized Crime (POC) team received information that the suspect gave a security officer money to access the premises so that he could rob the mine. The POC members agreed to ambush the
suspect on Friday 17 October at 19:00. Their plan worked as they spotted him at about 19:20 on the premises with 13kg of unwrought precious metals and 22,5kg of copper. He could not give the Primrose police a clear explanation as to who gave him permission to take the goods, so he was arrested and brought to Primrose SAPS for detention. He appeared at Germiston Court and the matter was remanded for plea and trial.

The buffet restaurant offers a variety of hot and cold starters, main courses and a great selection of desserts. This is one of the biggest buffet restaurant in the country, with a variety of more than 130 dishes to choose from. Most buffet restaurant have a small slection of desserts, but the Mad Platter has a big selection of desserts, from a chocolate fountain to warm baked puddings. Kids can also help themselves at the soft serve ice cream machine. tame TIMES had the opportunity to attend the opening evening and experienced the kind and friendly hospitality of the staff. The bottomless buffet had us all going back for more, and more, and more. We even tried some of the exotic meats they serve, such as duck, prawns, crocodile and ostrich. The Mad Platter offers catering for small and big groups, and the venue is ideal for year-end functions, celebrations and romantic dinners. This family restaurant has great kiddies entertainment as well and a state of the art kiddies menu where kids can make their own pizza or enjoy burgers, boerewors rolls or pasta. Headline Sign & Print does presentations at High Schools to inform Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners about a Career in Printing. This free presentation is one hour long and explains the different printing techniques, starting with the new age digital printing which most of the pupils understand. They then move on to the older forms such as
silk-screening, Litho and Curved surface printing, also knows as pad printing. They gain the pupils’ interest by setting up a silkscreen unit and allowing them to interact by printing on to a T-shirt. Schools that are interested can book an appointment for a presentation by contacting Shane Chudleigh on 083 284 4646 or emailing headlinesp@gmail.com

Freight must work Revolutionary for the economy security solution
BEWARE OF IMMITATIONS
Amy-Mae Campbell amymae.campbell@tametimes.co.za “The discussion around freight, and positioning and aligning it more optimally, productively as a generator of economic value, needs an ongoing deeper discussion,” said Dr Ismail Vadi, MEC for Roads and Transport. MEC Vadi was speaking at the 2014 Freight Summit, which was held at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg on 20 October. The 25-Year Integrated Transport Master Plan for Gauteng forecasts that by 2037, or thereabouts, the vehicle population of Gauteng is projected to increase from 3,5 million to 6,5 million. Consequently, Gauteng road-users during morning peak hours could increase from the current 2.2 million to 3.8 million by 2037. It is with this reality in mind that Vadi addressed participants at the summit. According to Vadi, Gauteng’s freight plan (how goods are transported, imported and exported) needs a strong supporting road network in order for the economy to prosper in spite of the increasing motorist population and product transport demands. “An efficient transportation system is a critical element for sustainable economic development. The present high level of congestion on large portions of the Gauteng road network is therefore a major cause of
concern. It leads to a loss in productivity owing to longer travel times and increased fuel consumption,” Vadi said. Apart from the influence of freight on the province’s economy, the safety of motorists on the roads is another crucial factor that was discussed at the summit. Vadi referred to the tragic horror crash on the N12 Voortrekker Road in Alberton recently, where a truck plunged into 48 vehicles and killed four people. Barely three days later there was another crash on the N12 involving two trucks. According to Vadi, the Department is determined to create safer roads. However, due to the impact of freight on our economy, the intervention cannot be one-sided. Overloading of freight vehicles is another issue that the Department aims to curb. Many drivers avoid strategies of law enforcement, such as weigh bridges, and take alternative routes. Vadi calls on the freight sector to stick to the Keep Left Pass Right rule; to comply with the speed limit and to adhere to load restrictions, as negligence on the road, in the end, impacts our economy negatively. One way in which the Department aims to create safer and more efficient freight transportation, is via the development of the Durban-Gauteng freight corridor by 2030, which should alleviate freight congestion on public roads.

Double joy for Ekurhuleni golfer Ekurhuleni junior golfer, Liam van Deventer, recently had reason to celebrate twice after scoring a play-off victory in the prestigious Nomads SA Boys u/13 Championship, and helping his team to win the Team Competition at the same tournament. Van Deventer, a Grade 6 learner from St Catherine’s and a member of Germiston Golf Club coached by Robbie Stewart, was two off the pace from Southern Cape’s Jordan Duminy at the start of the final round, but the Germiston young gun reeled in four birdies to offset three dropped shots for a one-under-par 71 to set the clubhouse target at a four-over-par 221. Duminy from Mossel Bay birdied the second and bogeyed the fifth to stay in front, but after 12 straight pars, the Louis Oosthuizen Junior Golf Academy member dropped a
shot at the par-five 18th to finish in a tie for lead at the end of regulation play. The leaders finished the first extra hole in par, but during the third trip down the 18th, Van Deventer turned the tide in his favour. He timed his second shot perfectly and finished 20 metres before the green, while Duminy overshot the pin. The Ekurhuleni junior chipped to six feet and drained the birdie putt for victory. Meanwhile Yurav Premlall carded a 79, Zamokuhle Nxasana returned 82, Casey Jarvis registered an 82 and Jaryd Venter contributed an 84 to win the Team Competition. Western Province won the 2014 Absa Currie Cup. * Photo: Images/enca.com This past Saturday the Lions and Western Province competed for the 2014 Absa Currie Cup at Newlands. It was a nail-biting match, but in the end WP edged past the Lions to claim a 19-16 victory. By half-time WP was already leading 13-0, which did not predict victory for the visitors. However, the Lions fought back hard during the second half. The team scored their first penalty kick only five minutes into the second half. A try and a second penalty kick followed shortly afterwards and tied the two teams at 13-13. The Lions were relentless, but poor kicking ultimately led to the team’s demise.

After WP inside centre Jaco Taute planted the first try of the match, WP was set on winning the Cup. WP has always been a strong contender for the Currie Cup: from 1982 to 1986 WP has won the Cup every year. The team last won the Currie Cup in 2012 and was set on claiming it again this year. The Lions last won this title in 2011. WP flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis was named Man of the Match for his exceptional goal-kicking, which gave the champions the edge on the scoreboard. It was a close match, but a well-deserved victory for WP. This year is the 33rd time that WP has won the Absa Currie Cup title.
