claims more lives

DISASTER: The aftermath of one of the many collisions on the N12. Photo from Ignitionlive.co.za The death toll keeps rising on one of South Africa’s most notorious roads, the N12. Three people were killed and two were critically injured last week when their vehicle rolled multiple times near the R59 in Alberton. When ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene, they found a badly damaged vehicle in the fast lane and discovered that two women and one man had sadly succumbed to severe injuries. Two people in a critical condition were trapped in the vehicle. Emergency services used the jaws-of-life to free them, after which they were transported to the Baragwanath Hospital under advanced life support. Two weeks ago, the EMPD hosted a Festive Season Prayer session on the N12, in which various denominations and faith-based

organizations were invited to join hands in prayer against the high rate of accidents and for the reduction of fatalities on the roads. This was done following the horrific accident on 14 October, in which more than 40 cars were involved. As a result of the many recent accidents on the N12, the EMPD conducted speed checks at the Reading Interchange, the Comaro Offramp, and on the R59. On Sunday, seven speedsters were arrested for exceeding the speed limit betweem 05:00 and 10:00. According to EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng, a female driver was caught driving 170km/h, claiming that she was late for church. Another driver was arrested for travelling at 182km/h in a Chevrolet Lumina SS. The offenders were taken to the Alberton and Brackendowns Police Stations respectively and charged with reckless and negligent driving. From Our Bakery Buttercream Slabs

musings {A note from the Editor}

Brackenhurst bederfoggend

After a weekend of absolute fun and relaxation, I have once again realized how important it is to cherish the relationships in your life. People enter your life for a reason (or a season), but they are all there because they need to be. This week’s newspaper proves it to me once again. The people that I’ve met through stories that were sent in from readers and events we covered will never cease to amaze me. I have so enjoyed the letters this week! The Ekurhuleni Final Notice Dilemma continues on page 4, while page 5 gives us hope for water wastage in Alberton and Germiston. Alberton Day and Music Festival is this weekend. For all the information you need, have a look at pages 8 and 9 – and for even more information, visit our website at www.tametimes.co.za.

The tame TIMES Community Cup was a major success once again. We had lovely weather (and sunburn), fantastic sponsors and great laughs at the prize-giving. Congratulations to Pieter-Ben Pienaar and Stiaan Lombard for winning with a very impressive score of 48 points. I’m looking forward to meeting even more people who will have an influence on my life. On this note, I want to say goodbye to our journalist, Roedolf Walker, who left us yesterday to further his studies. We want to welcome back our Boksburg Editor Natasha Kotze, who had an extremely difficult week with the passing of her husband Stephan. On a personal note, I want to say happy birthday to a wonderful friend, Marnus Van Niekerk. Thank you for being in my life. I hope you have a wonderful day! Stay in touch!

tame TIMES asked readers what they think can be done to improve the situation regarding all the fatal accidents on the N12 highway, particularly at the Reading Interchange. Here’s what they had to say:

Monique Schutte: ‘’As someone who has been driving there for many years, I feel that the road is firstly not adequately built and second, people should look where they are going and not drive so fast.’’

Loreen Marks Fletcher: ‘’Stop the trucks using all the lanes. They shouldn’t be allowed to go faster than 80km and should use other routes and not the tunnel. Of course Sanral expects toll fees, but Carin Mijne: ‘’Start off with a LOT more there are not even lights at night at all the Miguel Abrahams and Stephanie Els: visibility and patrolling by our Traffic strategic areas - it’s terrible where the N12 There must be one separate lane for trucks, and sufficient signage. meets the R59 at night.’’ Controllers!!’’

Na `n gesukkel is toe my password aanvaar.

Ek het toe aangevra of ek in Afrikaans kan skryf aangesien Afrikaans my tweede taal is. Engels is my derde taal. Final Notice: RESPONSE

Final Notice Dilemma continues Disgruntled resident writes:

The article written by your reader regarding a Final Notice sounded just like my situation. We have lived in the same house in Brackenhurst for 42 years and have never been late with payments to the Municipality. We relied purely on the Post Office for information on the amount to be paid monthly, but while there were no postal deliveries we had to take a wild guess and estimate the

amount owing. Then one day a man arrived and gave me a final notice. Why did he not bring me a statement rather? The amount I had to pay for this notice was R99. A FINAL NOTICE must surely mean that there were previous notices? I was NOT late, but obviously did not pay the correct amount. I am attempting to connect with an alternative way of paying. Final Notice: RESPONSE

Motorists warned of bogus police officials The SAPS has warned motorists to be vigilant while driving on highways. This follows numerous highway robbery incidents, in which criminals posing as police officials have directed motorists to the side of the road in order to rob them of their valuables. Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, a SAPS spokesman, said it was imperative to check for the correct police certificate and badge before accepting an official as legitimate. He said motorists unsure of a policeman’s credentials should put on hazard lights and drive to a nearby police station or frequented area. “If the officer is legitimate, he won’t mind you taking these precautionary measures,” he said.

Opinion Piece by Palesa Yates

In a lifetime the average human produces enough litres of spit to fill two swimming pools. Coca Cola was originally green. 111,111,111 X 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321

Wispeco takes AIFA Cup In the finals of the Alrode Industrial Football Association Knockout Competition, Wispeco ended their season on a high with a 2-0 win over Everite in a gripping match. Wispeco, who were recently crowned champions of the League Season 2014 in September, came to this game with the upper hand after a good run in the competition, having defeated Henkel and Lafarge in the quarter- and semi-finals respectively. Everite, on the other hand, wanted to win the competition that eluded them last season when they lost on penalties against Rheem. Having given Wispeco a run for their money in the League and finishing second, Everite also proved to be a force to be reckoned with, with yet another good run in the competition - by defeating both AGS and Air Liquid in the quarter- and semi-finals

respectively. Hosts Everite placed Wispeco under early pressure with great offensive game-play that saw them pushing right up to the box. With a home field advantage, Everite created various scoring opportunities, but a goal still seemed to elude them. Despite the pressure they maintained on their goals, Wispeco’s defence held out during the first half and they were unable to score. Wispeco came back with a vengeance in the second half, pushing deep into Everite’s half; and a barrage of shots was kicked at the goal from all angles. Their perseverance and pressure paid off when Wispeco finally punched a ball past the goalkeeper for a goal midway through the second half. Never ceasing their pressure, they were rewarded with another goal close to the final whistle effectively guaranteeing them the Cup title.

to better his fighting skills.” The 26-year-old athlete moved down to Featherweight division from Lightweight as a career move - as he believed he would be much stronger in this division and it would be a better weight to compete in. His career move has proved to be a positive one as he beat Peter Nyide in EFC32 in Round 3 by unanimous decision and is now competing for the Featherweight title which he believes he can claim. “If there is anyone who can beat Allen, it is me,” Groth said. Team Warrior has various game-plans - if one does not work, they will go to the next, with Groth saying he is going to give his all. Training at the Alberton Wrestling Club was said to be torture for the 1,77m athlete who has been training every day with a rest day when needed. He said due to his cutting weight, his body has been stiff, as muscles do not hold water. However, with the determination and drive that Groth has, this is just part of the journey to victory. The Warrior’s fan base has been growing and is sure to expand even more on fight night which he said only motivates him even more. “I am very blessed - my parents never miss a fight of mine. I am told my mother is quite vocal on the stands while my father watches EFC32: Wade Groth beat Peter Nyide by unanimous decision. and then only breathes once the fight is over.” The highly respected local Extreme Fighting Champion fighter Wade “Warrior” Groth will be fighting the EFC Four other fighters from Alberton Wrestling Club Featherweight Champion Boyd Allen on 11 December are also on the fight card for EFC36, namely Mike at EFC36 held at the Coca-Cola Dome.
