Oil spill mayhem INSIDE
WATER CRISIS IN EKURHULENI
Stephanie Conradie
stephanie.conradie@tametimes.co.za The Alberton CBD was chaotic after an oil spillage occurred on Friday afternoon. Both a part of Voortrekker Road and Swartkoppies Road were closed down after an Abnormal Load vehicle, escorted by EMPD, caused a major oil spill on these roads. Mr Leon Marais from Alberton told tame TIMES that he was travelling on the Ring Road West on his way to Makro when he saw the Abnormal Load vehicle move underneath the overhead signs on Voortrekker Road. To him it looked as if transformers were being transported by the vehicle. After the vehicle passed the overhead sign, he saw the oil spilling from the transformer. “EMPD was on the scene and saw what had happened, yet they just moved further, spilling the oil all the way down Swarkoppies Road,” Mr Marais said. “I felt my double cab bakkie sliding over the road and I could see other vehicles sliding on the oil as well, almost causing an accident.” Mr Marais’s opinion is that EMPD should have stopped the abnormal load vehicle immediately and they should have handled the situation differently, as it is very dangerous to let oil spill the way it did. EMPD and Ekurhuleni Fire Department were on the scene soon after the incident and covered the oil with sand to ensure the safety

Me. Me.

Water crisis in
Ekurhuleni

Helicopter crash in Germiston kills two A man and a woman tragically lost their lives after a helicopter crashed and burst into flames in Germiston near Rand Airport on Thursday afternoon. The helicopter was a Matrix recovery helicopter operated by Henley Air, which was returning from a vehicle recovery mission. Paramedics and members of other emergency services arrived on the scene and found the remains of the burnt-out chopper. Tragically, by the time paramedics arrived both of the people in the helicopter were dead.

EBI creates business opportunities Many households, businesses and even hospitals in Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg South were left without water over the past week. Fortunately Alberton has not yet been affected, but residents are urged to use water sparingly. The shortage began when the electricity to two major Rand Water pumps stopped and reservoirs in the area ran dry, leaving many Ekurhuleni suburbs without water. Where water is still present, low pressures in water pipes prevented the water from reaching households, with higher-lying areas being the worst affected. While those in low-lying areas were fortunate enough to receive a trickle of water, those living higher up were completely cut off from the supply. The sudden onset of water outages has destroyed trust in government’s ability to deliver services. It seems that no plans have been put forward to remedy the situation and the authorities have not been able to cope with the challenges they face. John Moodey, Gauteng Caucus Leader of the DA, has stated that the enormity of the problem has been grossly understated. “The head of state should call the shortage a state of disaster so that it can be properly fixed and contingency plans be set in place,” Moodey said. Ordinary families have been adversely affected by the lack of water. Without water, even the wealthiest of families struggle, with children suffering the most. Since sanitation facilities cannot work without water, the outages created an environment in which disease could spread like wildfire, and schools were forced to close due to their bathroom facilities being out of order. Water tankers were deployed to the areas most affected, but the number of trucks was still quite low. The large scale of the problem put pressure on the municipal water tankers, as those being used in Bedfordview were also needed in Germiston and other areas. Private companies were enlisted to increase
the supply, but this has also inflated the price tag attached to problem. Supplies of bottled water in some places dried up and left people with no other alternative but to depend on the tankers that were only sporadically supplied. The cost to industries in the area is astronomical. When there is a power shortage, companies can resort to generators to supply power to their factories but without water everything grinds to a standstill. The greater Ekurhuleni area is one of the largest industrial areas in South Africa and the cost to the economy of the current water outages cannot be understated. Without the factories, many workers will be left jobless – which will only compound the issues around the water shortage.
The Ekurhuleni Business Initiative is a business networking forum where businesspeople from all walks of life get together to create profitable and mutually beneficial business opportunities. EBI CEO Chris van Biljon explains that it is vital for businesses in today’s modern day economy to create business platforms. The aim of the EBI is to enable businesses to connect and share common goals, ambitions and strategies with one another - which would be difficult to do without a common platform like the EBI. Through their links they can then share resources and skills, and enable their businesses to become strategically positioned on the front-line of the ever expanding frontiers of
Ekurhuleni Spokesperson Themba Gadebe, however, has commented as follows: “As Rand Water and Ekurhuleni engineers are continuously working around the clock to bring the situation back to normal, we wish to emphasize on our call to residents to assist the process by using the little available water sparingly.” Ekurhuleni started the pumps to Sunnyridge tower on 26 September, but they tripped due to cavitation, which was caused by air locks. The pumps, which are supplied by Northridge reservoir, were then restarted on 27 September. The Airfield reservoir will be throttled until the level reaches 10%, to boost the level of the Northridge reservoir. Most Primrose areas are getting water but still experiencing low pressures and some areas still do not have water, including Albermarle, Castle View, Dinwiddie and the northern part of Katlehong due to the leak on the Ekurhuleni network which the Municipality is busy repairing. Load shifting will continue and reservoir levels will be monitored closely during the period.

the unfolding global market. The EBI puts as many as 100 businesses in touch with one another every week through networking meetings. For more than 12 years members have met loyally every Monday evening at various venues throughout Ekurhuleni. Every week another member has a turn to host a networking event and to deliver a presentation to the members. Last week David Troskie from Imperial Nissan Boksburg hosted the EBI event. Traditionally, the month of September is a difficult time at the South African National Blood Service (SANBS). Owing to preliminary examinations and preparation towards the final quarter of the year, blood drives at schools and universities are generally not possible at this time of year. This, together with poor turnouts at companies and organisational blood drives, has placed immense pressure on the blood stock levels. “SANBS needs to maintain a blood stock level of 5 days at all times by collecting 3000 units of blood per day to meet the demand of the thousands of patients who are reliant on blood transfusions for their survival. However at the moment we have only 1,6 days of blood stock available, and we are concerned that, should this continue, we are looking at a major crisis as we head towards the festive season,” says Vanessa Raju, Communications Manager of SANBS. It is only with the help of selfless blood donors that SANBS is able to rectify this situation. They have implemented a cut-back approach, according to which they are not fully able to meet requests by doctors. For example, if a doctor requests four units of blood, SANBS may only be able to offer two units, and this approach will continue until the blood stocks recover. SANBS is encouraging all regular donors and those who have made a conscious decision to join this cause of “saving lives” not miss out on their next donation date. This is also a reminder to all donors who selflessly donated blood on Mandela Day to remember that they are due to donate again and to continue making every day a Mandela Day. Members of the public who meet the minimum requirements to give the gift of life by becoming regular donors are urged to visit us as soon as they possibly can.

Vir ‘n man met ‘n familiegeskiedenis van suikersiekte, was dit na my mening baie onverantwoordelik. Choosing a good
Choosing a restaurant can be a daunting task. Be it for a fancy night out on town or simply a Sunday lunch with the in-laws, the task can lead to success or everlasting shame. The multitude of options bombarding you, as well as the varied preferences of all the people in your group, can make choosing one restaurant to keep everyone happy seem impossible. So how do you choose the perfect restaurant? Follow these steps and dining out will be the highlight of your week: First impressions are lasting impressions. When choosing a restaurant, it is incredibly important to consider the area and condition of the restaurant in question. The first indication of the quality of a restaurant is its appearance. The most expensive restaurant can seem cheap and quick if the building it is in is not up to scratch. The appearance and cleanliness of the restaurant can have a definite effect on people’s perceived notion of the food they will receive. Finding a restaurant that is both clean and aesthetically pleasing will put your guests at ease and start your meal off on a good note.

Every occasion is the most important. Having a meal out of the blue creates free rein to choose as you see fit. If it is a special occasion, however, this creates a set expectation about the evening. A date, for instance, requires a restaurant with a certain amount of elegance and class. The same is true for catering for VIPs, which comes paired with even higher expectations. Use the guidelines of social convention to ensure that the dining experience is suitable for the people and the event.
Following these guidelines will take you a long way towards finding the perfect restaurant. A bit of extra effort really goes a long way to ensuring that your meal is thoroughly enjoyable. There is food for every mood. People are picky creatures by nature and finding something for everyone’s taste is one of the hardest parts of choosing a place to dine. A place with a narrow selection is bound to find someone unhappy with their lot. A set menu is a very dangerous proposition unless you know for a fact that all your guests will enjoy the food. Most modern restaurants have websites with their entire menu available for perusal. This is a great way to know what choices the restaurant has and whether it will cater to your various needs.
The price is right. A sticky topic when it comes to dining - and often a source of great unhappiness - is the price of the meal. No one is willing to break the bank for a meal and this often stands in the way of having a good time. The best advice for this situation is to go with a clear idea with what your budget for the evening is. That gives you both the freedom to spoil your guests, as well as not having to search your purse for loose coins.

Alberview Primary also uses the opportunity to thank parents and pupils for their generosity throughout the year. This year was the second year that the fun day was opened to the public and, not only does this generate more funds for the school, but it also allows the Alberton community a glimpse into the Alberview family. The community enjoyed an EMPD K9 unit demonstration, as well as the Red Dragon Dojo martial arts demonstration. Stalls on hand were games, plants, food, refreshments and tombola. Some of the Grade 5 pupils had a Loom Band stand; there was also Amcare, a photo booth and a temporary tattoo booth. What made the day even more of a success was the range of inflatables that the children could enjoy, with some of the teachers even being dunked in the dunking booth, much to the children’s delight. School Principal Mrs Petra Vermeulen would like to thank the school management team, teachers, pupils, parents, parents association and the Alberton community for their support.

VICTORIOUS: Franco Mostert scoring his fourth Currie Cup try. Photo: GB Jordaan On Saturday, 27 September, the Xerox Golden Lions faced the Griquas in Kimberley and won with a massive points difference of 46-8. The Lions managed to score six tries altogether, which earned them a bonus point. The Lions may now be set for a home semi-final and possible final at Ellis Park. Although the Griquas showed good defence, the Lions dominated the first half and settled the half-time score at 13 – 3. Fullback Andries Coetzee put the Lions on the scoreboard with his try in the 12th minute and Ruan Combrick converted the try. Griquas fullback Gouws Prinsloo kicked a penalty to get
his side on the scoreboard just before halftime. The Griquas showed good defence in the first half; the second half, however, showed a completely diifferent Griquas side. Jaco Kriel scored for the Lions in the 48th minute with Combrinck converting the try. Four more tries followed for the Lions, with lock Franco Mostert, replacement back Albertus Smith and Combrinck adding to the tally. In the 68th minute the Griquas managed to score with flanker Carel Greeff scoring a try ending the game at 46 – 8. The Lions are currently second on the Currie Cup log and will face the Sharks in Durban on 3 October.
