It is yet another special week at tame TIMES. To m o r r o w, 1 April, we celebrate our 6th birthday and we decided to commemorate the occasion with a special competition for the community. We want you to nominate someone you know or know of in the Alberton or Germiston area, as the tame Community Hero. They will stand a chance to win R1000. So if you know of someone truly making a difference in the community, send us their name, contact details and reason for

entry by 30 April! tame TIMES started off small in 2009 and over the past six years we have grown to thirteen titles spread over South Africa. The newspaper has been through various changes over the years, keeping it fresh with a different approach to local news. Some ideas have worked extremely well, and others we consider a learning process. Today, I’m proud to bring you a newspaper filled with YOUR news, from schools to local sport clubs, to some history about Alberton. None of what we do could be possible without the dream team at tame. The sales reps who work hard to get advertisers so we can bring out the paper for free, the admin and finance team that makes sure we are informed what’s going on. Our distribution staff, who brave all weather circumstances to make sure you receive your tame TIMES every week. The editorial team for bringing in the news and interesting articles. But today I want to say an especially big thank you to the production team, the designers who work long hours behind the scenes to make the tame TIMES look great. Hope you enjoy this week’s newspaper – and remember to send your entries for the tame Community Hero to monica.supra@ tametimes.co.za

In 1927 is ’n saal ingewy wat tydelik as kerkgebou moes dien.

POSKANTOOR Die eerste volwaardige poskantoor is in 1926 as ’n vierkantige baksteengebou, met Lil Bester as posmeesteres geopen.

NETCARE CLINTON AND NETCARE UNION HOSPITALS NETCARE RESPONDS Esmé Abrahams, General Manager of the Netcare Clinton and Union Hospitals, has apologised unreservedly to the patients mentioned in the tame TIMES article published on 24 March. “We are most concerned to hear that some readers of tame TIMES who either themselves received treatment, or whose family members have been treated in our hospitals, feel that our service has not met their expectations. We wish to assure them that it is our objective to treat each and every patient and their families with absolute care and dignity and to provide them with quality care.” Abrahams added that the feedback received has provided management and staff of both hospitals with the opportunity to re-assess every aspect of their services and make improvements where their service delivery fell short of patient and visitor expectations, such as the overall cleanliness of their facilities and their interaction with patients. “I am sure that our patients and their family members will find the actions taken both meaningful and appropriate. More importantly, I really hope that it will provide our patients with an indication of how valuable their feedback is to us,” she says.

IMMEDIATE IMPROVEMENTS ALREADY VISIBLE

According to Abrahams, the hospitals have implemented a number of interventions to prevent a re-occurrence of the experiences outlined in the tame TIMES article. “Short-term actions that will immediately be visible to anyone visiting the hospitals include a full assessment of all the public areas by the hospitals’ maintenance teams which have done all the necessary repairs. We have also employed additional cleaning staff to work specifically in the public areas where high traffic volumes, particularly during and after visiting hours, have impacted on the cleanliness of these areas.”

“Visitors who smoke immediately outside the front doors of the hospitals, where there are clear signs that prohibit smoking, will find that our hospital security team will be adopting a very strict anti-smoking stance. We have also identified a number of public areas where re-upholstering was required and are fast-tracking the refurbishment of these areas.”

•Netcare Union Hospital is one of only two accredited Level 1 Trauma facilities in South Africa (Netcare Milpark Hospital being the other facility), and attends to more trauma cases than most other private hospitals in South Africa. •Netcare Clinton Hospital opened a new multi-million rand paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) just over 18 months ago to provide the children of the area with highly specialised care.

MEDIUM-TERM PLANS

The growing demand for private healthcare in southern Johannesburg has resulted in an unprecedented influx of new patients to both Netcare Clinton and Netcare Union Hospitals in recent years. “We are most thankful for the considerable support we are receiving from the communities that we serve and will continue to make every effort to ensure that we remain at the forefront of healthcare delivery while providing quality nursing care and other services within world-class facilities,” notes Abrahams. “We are also mindful of the fact that the emergency department at Netcare Clinton Hospital has outgrown the needs of our community and we are therefore in discussions with the Department of Health (DoH) to obtain permission to implement a number of changes that will significantly improve patient flows,” she says.

According to Abrahams, there are some exciting developments afoot for both hospitals in the not-too-distant future. She, however, believes that it would be premature to make these plans public at this stage. “What we can promise the people of Alberton and its surrounds is that Netcare will continue to invest in the communities that have supported us for so many years. We will also ensure that our facilities are impeccably maintained and managed until such time as we can make our big announcement,” she promises.

•In 2012, heart surgeons at Netcare Union Hospital successfully used a minimally invasive technique to repair a leaky artificial heart valve during an hour-and-a-half long procedure. The procedure was undertaken through a small puncture in the patient’s groin, using a catheter and wires to reach the leaking valve by means of 3D, realtime transoesophageal imaging for precise visualisation. It was the first time that local doctors in the private sector had performed such a procedure.

“We really encourage all our patients to provide us with feedback on the care they receive as it assists us in evaluating and improving our service on an ongoing basis and enhances the hospital experience of our patients,” assures Abrahams. “There are comprehensive patient feedback mechanisms in place within the hospital and we encourage our patients or their families to raise any concerns they may have with us while they are in hospital, or as soon as possible after leaving the hospital. We strive to maintain close contact with patients, with senior staff members doing daily rounds to patients. However, they may not see all patients every day as some patients may be undergoing treatment, tests or may be sleeping at the time. In addition we also offer patients the opportunity to complete a survey on an iPad while in hospital; this data is captured daily, providing our hospital management team with rapid patient feedback which enables them to respond promptly.”

•Netcare Clinton Hospital opened a dedicated cancer treatment centre which provides a holistic service to cancer patients living in Alberton and the surrounding areas less than five years ago. The centre is staffed by some of the country’s leading oncologists who offer patients treatment using cutting-edge technology. The integrated oncology centre offers chemotherapy and radiotherapy facilities and specialises in intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image guided radiation therapy (IGRT). SEXUAL ASSAULT

AWARENESS MONTH

COMPILED BY LIZETH KOTZE

Sexual violence is no longer a problem that affects only women. It is an issue that affects all of humanity. Sexual violence is defined by the World Health Organization as “any sexual act, attempt to obtain a sexual act, unwanted sexual comments or advances, or acts to traffic, or otherwise directed, against a person’s sexuality using coercion, by any person regardless of their relationship to the victim, in any setting, including but not limited to home and work.” We frequently misunderstand sexual violence as something that is provoked and we easily put the blame on the victim. In reality, rape and sexual assault are acts of domination, entitlement and violence. Marital rape, also known as spousal rape, is just one area relating to the topic that is widely misunderstood. This can be

Rape Crisis: 011 642 4345

defined as non-consensual sex in which the perpetrator is the victim’s spouse. The fact that you are married does not automatically mean you are entitled to sex with your partner. As such, non-consensual sex is a form of partner rape and amounts to domestic violence and sexual abuse, which are punishable offences. Marital rape has been described as one of the most serious violations of a person’s bodily integrity and yet it is a term that many people still have a problem comprehending, with some still describing it as a “contradiction in terms.” Whether you are raped or sexually assaulted by a spouse, girlfriend/ boyfriend or stranger, the defining criterion for sexual assault remains the same: If it is unwanted, it is sexual assault. CMR ALBERTON DAY CARE PROJECT CMR Alberton is launching a new Day Care Project. The project will pilot with two informal daycare centres in Alberton with the eye on future projects opening soon in Eden Park and Thokoza. The project leader Bee Lourens has done extensive research on the subject, as well as attending workshops at the Department of Education on this matter. The objective of CMR Alberton getting involved in this project is to help women who look after children out of kindness while their mothers are at work, as there is no one else

“Begging”

Hartlike Dank

In my geval is dit eerder: ‘’hierdie soetkoekies sal nooit soos my ouma s’n kan proe nie’’…TIP: neem alles rondom jou in, dit maak herinneringe soveel beter!

EMPLOYMENT

A community member sent us this picture of Willie, who stands in the traffic every morning with his board. Assuming that he is begging, people mostly ignore him. But when this reader saw what was written on his board, she felt heartbroken for making the assumption that he was begging. Written on his board are the words: “Driver / Mechanic Qualified Code 14 & PDRP Willie 076 938 2059 Seeking Employment” Should anyone have or know about an employment opportunity, give Willie a call. You could change a life.

to take care of them. These wonderful ladies, however, need equipment to stimulate the children’s development. For CMR Alberton to be able to help these informal daycare centres, they need a few donations. If there is anyone out there that has a jungle gym, small plastic tables and chairs, any toys, bikes or ride-ons lying around, they should please contact Ankia or Bee at CMR Alberton at 011 907 2922.

Hierdie was vir menige mense in 2014 ‘n

The 1st of April, also called “All Fool’s Day,” is celebrated by many pranksters. The origin of this tradition is uncertain and is a question that many people are still asking today. References to this foolish day can be traced back as far as the 1500s. One theory which dates back to 1564 might hold the answer. The French reformed their calendar during this period by moving the start to their year from the end of March to the 1st of January. Many people failed to keep up with this change and therefore had jokes played on them. Pranksters would stick paper fish on to

the backs of those who struggled to keep up with the change. The victims of this prank were called “Poisson d’Avril”, which translates into “April Fish.” To this day “April Fish” remains the French term for April Fools, and so the tradition was born. [sources: slideshare.net; hoaxes.org]

YOUR WORLD THIS WEEK CHINESE SCIENTIST BREEDS VEGETARIAN CAT

A cat-loving veterinarian from Beijing is successfully breeding felines with a difference. Tired of the usual tortoise-shell/ tabby/ ginger/Siamese options, he decided 25 years ago to create a designer pet species for humans who dislike the hunting habits of the common cat.

The latest addition to his cattery is a small Sphynx cat called Xing-Xing with green eyes and a penchant for digging up carrots. Mr Bobby Chang’s efforts have finally borne fruit – or, rather, vegetables. The latest addition to his cattery is a small Sphynx cat called Xing-Xing with green eyes and a penchant for digging up carrots. All Chang’s cats eat lettuce and spinach, but are as yet unable to harvest the leaves by themselves. www.newsfor01April.org

SA TAXI-DRIVER TO

MARKING THE EQUATOR WITH A FENCE

After the BBC’s decision not to renew the contract of suspended Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson for allegedly assaulting his producer, the popular motoring show is in trouble. Rumour has it that certain SA taxi associations have been approached with a view to helping the British national broadcaster locate a replacement for the talkative motoring journalist. Extreme driving skills, a vibrant imagination and a keen sense of humour are required. Applications open on 1 April 2015.

“It is high time we marked the Equator. Otherwise, how do people know where it is?” This was the intriguing question posed by a delegate to a World Geography Day Conference recently held in Jozi. The 750 delegates from around the globe who met at a Sandton hotel last week resolved to mark the Equator across the planet with a palisade fence. This project will begin on 1 April.

SAVE TOP GEAR? Urban legend has it that in one of the latest trending topics on Twitter citizens and shopowners are being urged to help Zuma “pay back the money” 10 cents at a time. Because of the practice of pricing goods at R19.90 or R9.95, many shops are running short of the 5- and 10-cent pieces they need to give change to shoppers. So the suggestion on Twitter – made by an anonymous source – is that consumers should agree to donate the money to help pay for Nkandla. The campaign kicks off on 1 April 2015.

NEGATIVE-CALORIE CHOCOL ATE FROM NIGERIA In an exciting new development for the weight-conscious, the Nigerian government has announced the development – and imminent export – of a type of chocolate that reduces waistlines instead of expanding them. These negative-calorie chocolates are not only delicious, but also serve to reduce avoirdupois. The more you eat, the thinner you get. www. nota419scambutan aprilfooljoke.com

RATS RAID SHEBEEN

Thokoza tavern-owners have been warned to be on the lookout for a gang of thirsty rats that could do serious damage to their stock in a matter of a few hours. tame TIMES spoke to Rose Khumalo, owner-manager of Rosie’s Tavern, who told us, ”I was woken up at 3am by the sound of drunk rats. About 20 of them had broken into my stock and smashed the bottles. They drank most of it,” said the sad shebeen queen, crying tears of frustration. “Unfortunately, they finished all the Jack Daniels, so now I have only beer left for my customers,” she added. “I can only afford to re-stock on Wednesday 1 April.”

NO TAX CUTS FOR ESKOM-FRIENDLY BUSINESSES There is no truth in the rumour that businesses that implement extreme load shedding measures will be eligible for income tax cuts. Corporates that ban lifts in favour of stairs, install stationary bicycles that power PCs through the sweat of pedalling employee s and opt for unrefrigerated colddrinks instead of tea and coffee at tea-time will not be rewarded. www.aprilfirstjoke.org

APRIL FOOLS’ DAY The origin of the April Fools’ Day tradition can be traced back to the 16th century. One theory, dating back to 1564, suggests that the French reformed their calendar by moving their new year to 1 January instead of 1 April, causing many people to forget to keep up with the change, resulting in others playing jokes on them. had been to multiple rehabs to beat his drug habit, to no avail. “The longest time I could stay clean was the time it took me to drive from rehab to my dealer,” he said. His said his habit had taken such a tremendous toll on himself and his loved ones that both he and his mother had tried to commit H G suicide. “My turning HI O O T point came when I was in NO MOUNTAIN hospital from my habit and my mother stood over my bed and told me I was dead to her and she had no son. I was admitted to Noupoort and this was the turning point for me. I met my wife at the centre. She had been admitted for weed and alcohol addiction.” But he said, most importantly, it was here that he met the living Jesus Christ for the first time. “I realised that my situation was the culmination of a lifetime of bad choices and through making one good choice after the next, with the help of God, I started to climb the mountain to freedom from addiction. Today, all my desire for drugs is gone. I have been completely set free. As the Word of God says, he who the Son sets free, is free indeed.” Broccardo explained his life had been left shattered. “My family was bankrupt from my addiction and I would pray to the Lord to at least let me have the chance to make amends with them and pay them back what was owing to them.” Today he is the CEO of software development company Eurocom and his parents work for his company. “God has really honoured my prayers,” he said. He also does motivational talks at churches and schools, and said he has been astounded when young girls around 10 to 11 years of age have come to him admitting drug usage and asking advice. “The problem of drug addiction is severely downplayed,” he said. “According to statistics, 570 000 drug users die each year.” His book is available online at Amazon.com and at all leading bookstores. He said walking in to Exclusive Books and seeing his book on the shelf was a humbling experience and was one of the many moments in his journey when Jesus had left him breathless. As a physical demonstration that anything is possible if you believe, he and his wife and their team decided to embark on the Seven Summits Challenge, undertaking to summit the world’s most challenging mountains. In his book, he recounts his summiting experience. “As I write these final lines, I am back there today, standing on top of that mountain. I have no doubts about who I am or what my name is. I am a son, a husband and a father. I am a believer in the unconditional love and complete restorative power of my Lord and my God Jesus Christ. An all glory belongs to Him. I am Marco Broccardo and I am a recovered addict.” For more information visit www.drugstodreams.com.

The word "hope" hangs on Sandringham resident Marco Broccardo’s front door and as you enter his home, two lively boys, Dino and Alessio, run up to greet you, followed by his wife, Catherine, holding his six-month-old baby girl, Arabella. This beautiful family is the collective miracle of two overcomers, Marco and his wife, Catherine, who met at the Noupoort Christian Care Centre. Broccardo, who overcame drug addiction, said the experience had been akin to climbing a great mountain. He and his wife now heading a non-profit organisation, Mountain Heights, established to help others overcome their addictions through faith-based practices. Broccardo, a former Sandringham High School learner and a member of Cornerstone Church in Bedfordview, recently authored a book, Rocks, which chronicles his journey from addiction to restoration – in his words, “from drugs to dreams.” He told the tame TIMES his addiction started in primary school when he became addicted to weed. “In high school, I started to take designer drugs and by the time I was 15 years old, I was addicted to cocaine and ecstasy. I began to use more and more, and one bad choice led to another. I was transformed into a cheater, liar and thief.” In his book, he recounts, among other things, the death of his close friend, Dwane, whom he befriended in high school and who used drugs with him. “Dwane’s death deeply saddened me,” said Broccardo, who wrote of his friend in his book: “To this day, I still dream about my friend. Rest in peace, Dwane. You were loved and are sorely missed.” He said his all-time low came in 1999 by which time he

Heroin use blocks the brain’s ability to perceive pain and produces a ‘downer’ effect. Common or street names: smack, H, skag, junk, brown sugar, horse, and black tar. Heroin is a drug that can be snorted, smoked, or injected into the veins. As heroin addicts lose the desire for personal hygiene, needles are shared which could lead to the transmission of HIV. The abuser quickly builds up a tolerance which means that more of the drug is needed to get the same effect. Experts say heroin is the toughest drug to beat - the rate of rehabilitation from this drug is less than 5%.

SIGNS OF HEROIN USE: • • • • • • •

Shortness of breath Dry mouth Constricted (small) pupils Sudden changes in behaviour or actions Disorientation Cycles of hyper alertness followed by suddenly nodding off Droopy appearance, as if extremities are heavy

THE ABOVE SIGNS ARE NOT UNIQUE TO HEROIN ABUSE. MORE DEFINITIVE WARNING SIGNS OF HEROIN ABUSE INCLUDE POSSESSION OF PARAPHERNALIA USED TO PREPARE, INJECT OR CONSUME HEROIN: • Needles or syringes not used for other medical purposes • Burned silver spoons • Aluminum foil or gum wrappers with burn marks • Missing shoelaces (used as a tie-off for injection sites) • Straws with burn marks • Small plastic bags, with white powdery residue • Water pipes or other pipes [sources: drugs.com, signsofdrugaddiction.com, haveigotaproblem. com, natgeov.com]

Chronicles of an overcomer

Here are some snippets from Marco Broccardo’s book: Rocks, One Man’s Climb from Drugs to Dreams: “Look,” she went on, “I’m going to give you a choice here. If you are serious about sorting out your life, and you make a commitment to getting clean - then we won’t press charges. But if you choose to carry on running your life into the ground and trying to pull your family down with you, then, Mr Broccardo, I will personally make sure you spend the rest of your sorry life on the inside of an overcrowded prison.” Even in the state of mind I was in, the answer came easily. I told her for sure I was going to change. I didn’t really mean it at that point, you understand – at least not yet. I was just trying to get out of trouble, as usual. The hospital decided to keep me under observation for a few days. I think my family also pleaded with them to keep me there

so that I was under control. I was put in a semi-private room with another guy about my age. I can’t remember his name but they must have put us together because we were there for similar reasons. He’d tried to kill himself and was also a crack user. The next day my mom came to see me. “Why did you do this?” she asked, looking at me as if I was some sort of a criminal. I completely freaked out on her. “What do you know about my life?” I shouted. “You have NO IDEA what I go through! What gives you the right to judge me? As if you’re so good?” Her reply took me by surprise, “You are dead to me,” she said. “I don’t have a son anymore.” Her voice trembled under the weight of the words.

I knew a lot of the girls who started using around the time I did. They would be partying it up with me at raves and clubs. They smiled and laughed, their faces reflecting pure joy and ecstasy. Four years later many of them were prostituting themselves for the drugs that made them so happy. They were trapped in bonds they couldn’t escape from. Their lives were cheap. They lived from one sexual encounter to the next. At best, one act of sexual intercourse could buy them one rock or four hits. Some of them had contracted AIDS and that carefree laughter of the early days had now been permanently muted.

Successful Super Rugby weekend South African rugby teams delivered top performances over the weekend of Super Rugby. The Vodacom Bulls crushed the Crusaders with a devastating score of 31-19 in Pretoria on Saturday. Local team the Emirates Lions beat the Reds by 18-17 in Brisbane on 27 March, securing three wins out of four during their Australasian tour. The Cell C Sharks moved to the top of the South African Conference

and into the top three of the log on their home turf on Saturday with a 15-9 win over the Force. Unfortunately, not all of the South African teams had the same result as the above-mentioned trio over the weekend. The Toyota Cheetahs lost against the Chiefs with 10 points (37-27) and the DHL Stormers suffered a crushing loss against the Highlanders in Dunedin, with a score of 39-21.

South Africa World Cup Highlights

From AB De Villiers:

AB De Villiers scored 162 off 66 balls against West Indies, making him the record holder for the fastest 50, 100 and 150 in One-Day International history.

To the people of South Africa and everyone who supported us in this world cup, thank you for your support. Thank you for the early mornings, thank you for being there when it counted the most. Things didn’t work out the way we wanted it to, and we’re sorry for losing, but we left it all out there on the field, we gave it our absolute best and as a team we have no regrets. We come back a proud team, and we hope you also did you as a nation proud. JP Duminy took 3 wickets against Sri Lanka in the quarter finals, making it the 1st hat trick of the World Cup, and the 1st hat trick for South Africa in a World Cup
