GERMISTON PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER BUSTED FOR DRUG POSSESSION A primary school teacher was arrested last weekend in connection with drug possession, after allegedly being caught red-handed buying drugs. According to reports, the teacher was arrested along with five Nigerian nationals aged between 24 and 29, last Saturday. The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department’s Germiston Crime Prevention Unit received a tip-off, after which they made the arrest. The Nigerian nationals were arrested for possession and dealing in illicit substances, while the teacher was taken in for possession, according to EMPD spokesperson, Wilfred

Kgasago. The arrest took place at around 09:30 in the morning, when EMPD officers noticed a silver Daewoo sedan parked close behind a silver Ford Figo. The officers waited until they witnessed an exchange taking place. Two Nigerian nationals were arrested at the scene, where they found four packets of Cat. An additional 33 packets of Cat and six packets of crystal methamphetamine were confiscated at the Nigerian nationals’ residence, where three more men were arrested. The 41-year-old primary school teacher was

Monica’s

musings {A note from the Editor}

Welcome to Autumn, where the colours start to change and the mornings are getting colder. Change is inevitable. We don’t always like change, yet we embrace it, eventually. This week we have a full page showing the readers everything they need to know about the changes in the budget abd how it will affect

them. Mimmos Meyersdal made a few changes when the new management took over. Have a look on page 7 to read about the Italian feast you can expect when you visit them. On a daily basis, we see changes in the society. My friend Christo changed a few people’s perceptions on Sunday when he stopped his car and carried a sick man from the middle of the street to the side of the road. You never know when your act of kindness can change someone’s life for the better, so don’t hesitate. This week, remember: “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything” - George Bernard Shaw.

THE COMMUNITY ADVISOR IN THE REALTY INDUSTRY Allan from Glenvista asks ALLEGIANCE PROPERTIES:

THE COMMUNITY ADVISOR IN THE REALTY INDUSTRY

What are the criteria to ensure a 100% + bond through the banks for home loans and can you apply for home loans through a number of banksl or only through one? Which banks does Allegiance Properties work closely with?

Julian Cornofsky & Jarryd Soma of ALLEGIANCE PROPERTIES respond: Thank you, Alan, for you valid question. Securing a 100 % loan mainly depends on the purchaser’s credit ratings. All the banks have different criteria, but to secure a 100 % loan would generally require the borrower to have a substantial surplus amount of money left in his or her bank account after expenses - and all accounts to be paid on time. Rarely do the banks give 100% loans, so it is always important to have a minimum of a 10% deposit ready. Once you have made an offer to purchase a house through Allegiance Properties, we will help you select the best financing option from all the major financial institutions to secure your chosen property. Let our skills, experience and contacts in the banking world help you. Allegiance Properties works with all major banks, including SA Home Loans. Our team has a great success rate and we will make sure, after doing a due diligence on the house you want to buy, that we find you a dream home that will not let you down.

MEET YOUR HERO OF THE WEEK

Alert car guard saves the day

A woman parked her car outside Pick ‘n Pay Lambton on 25 February at around 11:00. While she was doing her shopping, her car was stolen. However, a very alert car guard noticed the suspect, and knowing the woman to whom the car belongs, realized that it was being stolen. He gave the alarm and started

chasing the car. The suspect jumped out of the vehicle and into a white Hyundai Avent, which sped off with two cars following. In front of MacSteel, the car rolled, leaving the driver deceased, one suspect apprehended and two escaping into the veld. The Lambton Klip Sector 4 CPF patrollers were on the scene, keeping watch until the owner

of the car arrived. They moved the car out of the way of traffic, assisted and waited for the SAPS who arrived on the scene within minutes. On behalf of Lambton Klip Sector 4 CPF, Pine Pienaar would like to thank the car guard for his involvement in apprehending the suspects.

From my heart to yours Spreading the love The morning was well spent at SAPS Brackendowns on 13 February celebrating Valentine’s Day. ‘’From my heart to yours’’ was the message and the formal address to members of the Police from the reigning Mrs United Nations SA 2015, Desiree Oliphant. Dezzy, as she has come to be known in the community, is a hopeless romantic at heart. Wearing a beautiful red dress with loads of bling, she gave her heart to these men and women of the law on the day. Each received a beautiful metallic red, heart-shaped keyring as a gift. Desiree expressed her sincere gratitude for the service the police render in and around our community and beyond the call of duty.

Councillor Michael Kriek of Ward 39 Germiston and the activists of the branch handed out Valentine surprise packets to the residents of Corrie Oberholzer Centre in Dinwiddie.

Desiree Oliphant spent some time at the Brackendowns SAPS.

HAS BEGUN A WAR ON

drugs March, the third month of the year, is named after Mars, the Roman god of war. In this spirit, tame TIMES has decided to launch a war against drugs within the community. Recent articles and news relating to drug use, especially among schoolchildren, sometimes even without their knowledge, have left many people wondering what can be done. We believe that education is key to understanding what drug abuse is all about, how to identify certain drugs, what symptoms to look out for, and of course, where to find help. For the month of March, we will be discussing a different type of drug every week. This week, we have information about one of the biggest problems in communities, nyaope. In the last few years, drug use in South Africa has been on the rise. We urge the community to inform the police, local CPF or security

companies when they suspect any drug abuse. According to Harmony Addictions Clinic, figures published by the South African Police Service show that drug abuse is involved in 60% of all crimes. ‘’To make matters worse, the Central Drug Authority’s (CDA) Dr David Bayever reckons that up to 15% of South Africans abuse drugs,’’ the report stated. In 2014, the total number of drug-related crimes reported in Alberton was 186, according to www.crimestatssa.com. That includes only the cases that were reported to the police. It shows a drastic increase of 141 cases since 2004, where the figure was 45. Let us as a community take hands in fighting the war against drugs. Share your stories and experiences with us on our Facebook page.

Description:

Effects: The High

It is a fine white powder that is usually combined with marijuana (dagga). It is smoked. It is not always clear what all of the ingredients of nyaope are, and the ingredients may vary from place to place - but one thing is clear: nyaope is made of a lethal combination of substances, which can include heroin, detergent powder, rat poison, and crushed anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs). * The high lasts for between 4-8 hours. * Smaller doses: euphoria, rush, sense of warmth and wellbeing. * Larger doses: drowsy, content, safe and relaxed. * The physical effects of heroin last for 4-8 hours

Effects: The downside & long term

Many who are addicted tend to lead chaotic lives that revolve around getting hold of the drug and various ways of getting money to buy it - prostitution and stealing. Other effects include: severe addiction, bacterial infections of the blood vessels and heart valves, abscesses, liver or kidney damage, lung complications, infectious disease, arthritis and other rheumatory problems; pulmonary complications, including various types of pneumonia - and, finally, fatal overdose. Withdrawal effects: It has some of the worst withdrawal symptoms a drug can have: restlessness, muscle and bone pain, insomnia, diarrhoea, vomiting, cold flashes, leg movements, extreme weight loss, and in some cases death.

VIGILANT: The domestic workers of Verwoerdpark are working with the police to fight crime.

Fighting crime their passion Fighting crime is their passion. The domestic workers of Verwoerdpark are hands on in their approach to fight crime in their area. They recently sent a lookout for a suspicious white VW Golf with tinted windows, which they saw driving slowly around Verwoerdpark after suspecting that the occupants were hunting for houses they could target.

The domestic workers meet regularly to discuss crime in the area and also help with distributing safety tips to the community. W/O Ngobeni and Sgt Mgedezi are working hand in hand with them. Station Commander Cl Kubone appreciates their efforts and thanked them for their contribution. Alberton SAPS is encouraging more workers to join the campaign.

Alberton SAPS success

Two men, aged 22 and 25, were arrested by the Alberton Police on 23 February at the Alberton informal settlement for possession of stolen jewellery that went missing after a housebreaking in Alberton North. The suspects allegedly broke into the house, stole the jewellery and then took the car from the yard and drove it to the informal settlement. They bumped into a shack and the fence of a nearby factory. The owner of the shack claimed that she was intimidated by the suspects after her property was damaged. The police were called and one suspect was arrested inside his shack. He pointed out the other suspect. The two will be charged with housebreaking and theft, theft of a motor vehicle, malicious damage to property and intimidation.

The car, some of the jewellery, a bank card and cellphones were recovered. The suspects appeared in the Palm Ridge Court on 25 February.

Hoe beleef ’n vreemdeling my?

Your food arrives within minutes of ordering, giving you just enough time to sip on a refreshing cocktail, such as the Kiwi Pineapple Mojito. The perfect blend of Cuban light rum, muddled with lime, mint leaves, pineapple juice and kiwi puree, churned with ice and garnished with a lime wheel, it adds a twist to your expectations – like all of the cocktails on the Mimmos menu. The Sorrento salad comes highly recommended. Cajun chicken, salad greens, fresh tomato with avocado and spring onions, all make for the perfect salad when you are feeling healthy. Chicken-lovers will also love the

Gabriella’s pasta. With Cajun chicken, peppadews, olive oil, garlic, sundried tomatoes, brinjals, roasted peppers, jalapenos, button mushrooms and feta cheese, it sounds exactly as it should: heavenly. What is an Italian dining experience without pizza? Mimmos Meyersdal recommends the Rib and Pineapple pizza – marinated deboned pork spare ribs and pineapple. Add extra avocado for even more flavour and you will never want to order pizza from any other restaurant again. Those with a sweet tooth need not feel left out. Apart from their wide range of traditional desserts, Mimmos also offers a variety of mini-desserts such as tiramisu, blueberry white chocolate mousse and granadilla cheesecake, to name but a few. All this deliciousness comes at very affordable prices, leaving you no good reason not to visit Mimmos Meyersdal today.

It is the celebration of ordinary women as makers of history. South Africa also celebrates National Women’s Day on 9 August to commemorate the Women’s March of 1956, when women marched to the Union Buildings to protest against the carrying of pass books.

Sparrows Private School: A South African Success Story

The top 17 students at Sparrows Private School, all achieving an average of 70% and higher.

{

The top two students, Ethan Wood and Rachel Fourie, both have an average of 90%.

“Sparrows Private School is a prime example of what can be achieved through belief, dedication and ambition.’’ – Cambridge University Guide to Excellence 2012 Edition.

Forty-five years ago, “Little Sparrows’’ was founded by a Greek immigrant couple, Nikki and Ari Karvelas. Ploughing all of their resources into the project, the couple built their first school themselves in 1970. Mrs Karvelas had worked in Athens at a nursery school named ‘“Ta Spourgitakia,’’ translated into English as “Little Sparrows.’’

In 1993, the first Grade Ones attended Little Sparrows Primary School. A new grade was introduced each year that followed and by 1995 the name ‘’Sparrows Private School’’ was adopted. Student numbers grew steadily and by 2000 the Grade 7 – and final primary school class – was introduced. By that time, the Department of Education was so impressed with Sparrows Private

School that its registration was upgraded to include a high school. Sparrows Private School prides itself on being a family-orientated school that takes a personalised approach to each of its students. The school is currently being run by the daughter and son-in-law of the founders, Gregory and Helen Gregoriou. Helen had always been involved with the school since

{

she was a little girl. In addition to investing in its academic success, Sparrows Private School also encourages its host of extracurricular activities. Sparrows Private School aims for achievement within a secure, caring and disciplined environment. Ultimately, the success of Sparrows Private School can be put down to one word – evolution.

INNOVATIVE CITY SLICKERS

Joburgers love to complain. If it is not about load shedding or traffic, it is about the potholes or city billing issues. The #Hack.Jozi Challenge, however, gives readers a chance to do something proactive about the city’s problems. The prize money for award-winning ideas on how to use technology to alleviate local issues is set high, with prizes of up to R5 million up for grabs. Zolani Matebese, the head of broadband at the City of Johannesburg, explained: “With prizes valued at R5 million, the #Hack.Jozi Challenge’s aim is to find the most innovative digital ideas to enrich the lives of the people of Joburg.” Matebese explained there was no issue too big or too small for consideration. “If you have an idea about how you can use technology to help your community, we want to hear from you.” Anyone, whether as teams or individuals, can enter. Application will be in the form of a YouTube video and online application form. The deadline for entries is 6 March 2015. The winners will be whisked away to Jozi’s digital hub in

03 March 2015

the heart of Braamfontein, where they will have access to various resources, mentors, advisers as well as partners to make their vision of helping their community a reality. This will also entail a month-long process of intensive business training, technical hackathons and a demo day where the winners will be required to demonstrate their business value proposition. Once selected, award winners will receive membership of Jozi’s digital hub plus a cash amount. Technical support and mentorship will also be provided. The final award winners will also receive one year free hosting credit for their business applications from IBM. The #Hack.Jozi Challenge is an initiative between the City of Johannesburg and the Joburg Centre for Software Engineering (JCSE) at Wits University. “This is a boot camp for start-up entrepreneurs and our aim is to contribute towards fostering skills, innovation and entrepreneurship in the broad area of digital technology,” said Matebese.

HOW WILL TAX INCREASES BE SPENT? OPINION PIECE BY PALESA YATES Those earning under R181 900 a year – or under R15 158.33 a month – will find little comfort in being spared a tax increase because the fuel levy increase of 80.5 cents per litre from 1 April will be anything but an April Fool’s Day joke. Lower earners still need to travel to work, eat, buy new clothes and pay school-fees and have a lower percentage of discretionary income than the higher income earners who will feel their monthly R1,105 tax increase proportionately less. To add insult to injury, commuters are unlikely to see their increased fuel payments filling potholes, fixing traffic lights or being used to pull down gantries. Also, despite a R23-billion allocation to Eskom - with the first of three instalments due to be paid in June - load shedding is bound to continue, with job shedding, no doubt, to follow. An additional two cents per kWh will be required from paying consumers until, according to Minister Nene, the “electricity shortage is over;” but nothing was said in the budget speech about tackling illegal connections and no detailed plan or guarantees were given regarding keeping the lights on. The usual sin taxes on liquor and cigarettes were to be expected and so was the promised spending on infrastructure. The Finance Minister has budgeted R813 billion over the next three years for public infrastructure investment. This should be good news in the light of ageing water infrastructure, crumbling roads in many places and dysfunctional sanitation systems. So should Minister Gordhan’s “Back to Basics” strategy to fix local government and the R4.3 billion allocated to help him. These plans, however, are suspiciously close to the 2016 Local Government Elections. The promise to reduce budget allocations to “noncritical activities” is also hollow. Government-funded bashes at hotels should stop altogether - taxpayers cannot afford to pay for workshops and conferences that end an hour or two after a three-course lunch or that require delegates to stay overnight even when they live nearby. Sadly, not much attention was paid to protecting the new tax increases from being mis-used by govt officials. Only two vague little sentences were allocated to our country’s multibillion-rand-a-year corruption habit. “The fight against corruption remains a central priority. Additional allocations have been made to the Public Protector and the Financial Intelligence Centre for increasing their human resource capacity,” said the Minister. Yet, according to an Eyewitness News report, opposition parties attacked the decision to raise personal income tax, with the ACDP’s Steve Swart saying, “Rather look at corrupt and wasteful expenditure of R30 billion a year.” More money should have been spent on fighting corruption. It’s the one crutch that hasn’t been properly beaten by post apartheid, majority led governance. Kymon Giannakopoulos

National Classic Cycle race 8 MARCH 2015

ELITE DIVISION WINNER: J.C. Nel crosses the line. The 2015 Carnival City Macsteel National Classic Cycle race took place on Sunday 22 February at Carnival City. The race is an annual cycling event. This year the distance for the men’s elite category increased from the 160km course distance in 2014 to 164km. Crosswinds made the route difficult for the cyclists and a large group of Elite men formed at the front. This continued, until a group including JC Nel broke away from the pack. Nel remained with the break-away group and crossed the finish line first, winning the main event of the race. The top three in the 164km Elite and u/23 race were: JC Nel Oliver Strapleton-Cotton Gustav Basson In the 103km Elite Ladies category, they finished as follows: Kimberley Lecourt Lynetter Burger An-Li Kachelhoffer Cyclists competed in numerous other categories.

Thousands of cycling enthusiasts will flock to Cape Town to participate in the 38th annual Cape Town Cycle Tour. The first race dates back to 1977 when a total of 525 cyclists participated. It started as a protest to campaign for cycling paths in and around Cape Town. A few decades later, a staggering 35 000 cyclists will hit the long route of nearly 110km.

Fun facts about the Cape Town Cycle Tour (www.capetownmagazine.com):

The men’s record was set by Robbie Hunter in 2008, who completed the course in 02:27:29.

TOP 10: Elite ladies

The women’s record was set by Anke Erlank Moore in 2007, who completed the course in 02:48:29. The fastest average speed of 47,48 km/h was set by Wimpie Van Der Merwe in 1993. Penny Krohn set the record for the highest number of consecutive wins, 25, within an age group. The oldest man to complete the race within the allotted time of 7 hours was Japie Malan, who did the race on a single bicycle in 2010 and on a tandem in 2012. He was 92 years old at the time. Mary Warner is the oldest woman to complete the race within the allotted time of 7 hours, in 2006. She was 80 years old at the time.
